God's Peculiar People: Recent Episodes

Join me as we learn about the Peculiar People God has used through the ages to encourage the saints and save the lost. People like David Livingstone, Phillip Bliss, Amy Carmichael, Isobel Kuhn, Jim and Elisabeth Elliot, D.L.Moody, Ira Sanky, and more.
John Wycliffe (also spelled Wyclif, Wickliffe, and other variants; c. 1328 – 31 December 1384) was an English scholastic philosopher, theologian, biblical translator, reformer, Catholic priest, and a seminary professor at the University of Oxford. He became an influential dissident within the Catholic priesthood during the 14th century and is considered an important predecessor to Protestantism. Wycliffe questioned the privileged status of the clergy, who had bolstered their powerful role in England, and advocated radical poverty of the clergy.
Wycliffe has been characterized as the "evening star" of scholasticism and as the morning star of the English Reformation.
Wycliffe advocated the translation of the Bible into the common vernacular. According to tradition, Wycliffe is said to have completed a translation direct from the Vulgate into Middle English – a version now known as Wycliffe's Bible. He may have personally translated the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, but it is possible he initially translated the entire New Testament Early Version. It is assumed that his associates translated the Old Testament and revised the Late Version. Wycliffe's Bible appears to have been completed prior to 1384 with additional updated versions being done by Wycliffe's assistant John Purvey, and others, in 1388 and 1395. More recently, historians of the Wycliffite movement have suggested that Wycliffe had at most a minor role in the actual translation or contributed ad hoc passages taken from his English theological writings, with some, building on the earlier theories of Francis Aidan Gasquet, going as far as to suggest he had no role in the translations other than the translation projects perhaps being inspired, at least partially, by Wycliffe's biblicism at Oxford, but otherwise being orthodox Catholic translations later co-opted by his followers.

After being arrested in Jerusalem, Paul was taken to Caesarea where he remained for two years awaiting trial. He was then sent to Rome as a prisoner, traveling by sea with other prisoners and a Roman guard. The journey was perilous and difficult, with the ship encountering a severe storm and eventually running aground on the island of Malta. Despite these challenges, Paul continued to share the gospel with those around him, even converting some of his fellow prisoners and guards. Once in Rome, Paul was placed under house arrest for two more years, but he continued to preach and write letters to the churches he had established. Despite his chains, Paul's faith and dedication to spreading the gospel remained strong.

Paul's third missionary journey took place between 54-58 AD and lasted for about three years. He traveled through several regions including Galatia, Phrygia, Macedonia, and Greece, visiting the churches he had previously established and strengthening them. Paul also spent time in Ephesus where he taught for 2 years.
During this journey, Paul wrote epistles to the Corinthians, Galatians, and to the Romans and visited Jerusalem where he was arrested and taken to Rome to stand trial before Caesar. Despite facing several challenges, Paul continued to spread the gospel and build up the church.

Edward Kimball (July 29, 1823 – June 5, 1901) was an American Sunday School teacher known for converting 19th-century evangelist Dwight L. Moody to Christianity. Kimball also assisted churches across the United States in eliminating significant financial debts.

In part 14 of the Life of D. L. Moody, we cover chapters 44-46 of the book and come to the close of Mr. Moody's earthly labors.
In Chapter 44, we are told of Mr. Moody's love of life in the country, his affection for his mother, and his love of his grandchildren.
Chapter 45, tells us of his collapse of strength while preaching in Kansas City and the long journey back to Northfield where his family
gathered about his side as his earthly days of toil came to a close. Then in the 46th chapter, we hear of his funeral on Round Top near his home at Northfield.

The Life of D. L. Moody, is drawing to a close, and in chapters 38-40, William Moody focuses on his father's sermon preparation, and work with the YMCA. Chapter 38, deals specifically with Moody's sermon prep, including what books he thought were essential to have, how study should be done, and how he compiled his sermons.
Some of Moody's meetings were designed as Question and Answer sessions, where he or someone he trusted would answer Bible questions that people might learn from this manner of teaching. In this 39th Chapter, we find Moody himself answering some questions.
Known today as the YMCA, Chapter 40, takes a look at Mr. Moody's work in and for the Young Men's Chrisitan Association of his day.

D. L. Moody, though poorly educated by the standard of the day, yet he was an extraordinarily clever man, as we will learn in part 11, covering chapters 34-37 of the Life of D. L. Moody
Chapter 34, shared with us Moody's Capacity for work. He required little rest as he went from meeting to meeting. Preaching, talking one on one with people, and preparing for further missions. But we do in this chapter, that all of this labor was taking its toll on Moody's heart.
Following a grave warning about his health, in Chapter 35, Moody received a terrible shock, when sailing from Southampton, back to America, the shaft broke on the steamer and for a few days, all seemed hopeless.
The World's Fair of 1893, was held in Chicago, and the planning and execution of plans to share the Gospel with people from around the world, is the theme of Chapter 36.
In Chapter 37, we learn of Moody's cleverness, as he strives to reach the world with the Gospel, he finds the press will share his sermons in their papers.

The Life of D. L. Moody Part 10, covers chapters 30-33. In Chapter 30, we learn how the Bible Institute was preparing students for the work of home and foreign missions.
Chapter 31, tells us about Moody's work about College students. This was an area he was not as certain about his ability to reach them, but he visited many American colleges and visited Cambridge and Oxford. Moody was also involved in the Student Volunteer Movement.
The Northfield Conferences are the subject of chapter 32. There were means for women, students, preachers, and religious thought leaders of the day.
Chapter 33 finds Moody in the Holy Land after being invited by kind friends to join them on their journey to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Moody visited Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Bethany, the Mount of Olives, etc.

In Chapters 26-29, we cover a lot of ground in Moody's life and ministry.
Chapter 26 finds Moody on his second extended mission in Great Britain, where portable buildings were used for meetings, and we learn about Moody's association with Henry Drummond.
Chapter 27, covers Moody's later missions in various American cities, sharing about his 60th birthday, and an invitation to preach in Australia.
In chapters 28 and 29, we learn of the plans for the schools, Northfield Seminary and the Mount Hermon schools, that Moody built near his home. We learn of the course of study, his desire to help the young people of his home community and more.

Many amazing hymns have been written through the ages, but the hymn, There is a Fountain, has stood the test of time. It is a wonderful reminder of how important Jesus and His death on Calvary is to us today.
