In this episode, we are talking with Jennifer Williams, BSN, RN with the Regional Harm Reduction Collaborative about harm reduction strategies and how they are applied within the anti-human trafficking field.
A bit about our guest:
Jennifer Williams, Harm Reduction Coordinator for the Regional Harm Reduction Collaborative. She has a bachelors of science and nursing and she has 20 years of experience as a registered nurse. Jennifer began her nursing career as an emergency department nurse, where she witnessed first-hand the impacts of social determinants of health, as well as adverse childhood events and trauma on health outcomes. Over the past 5 years Jennifer has worked on several grant projects focused on changing systems of care, including implementing food insecurity screening, a take home naloxone, which you may know as the Narcan program, and buprenorphine induction in a local emergency department.
Her previous roles include organ procurement coordinator, substance use treatment coordinator, grant director, and public health nurse.
Jennifer is proud to partner with the most vulnerable members of our communities.

In this episode, we talk with Bonita Campbell of Lighthouse Youth Services on the topic of human trafficking among the LGBTQ+ youth population. We explore the reasons why these youth are particularly vulnerable to traffickers and how we can do a better job as a community of supporting and serving this population to help prevent trafficking.
About our guest:
Bonita Campbell is a Licensed Social Worker in the state of Ohio, a Certified Trauma Practitioner, she has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati.
Bonita has an extensive career spanning both child welfare and homelessness. She advocates for the best policies and resources to benefit youth and young adults by serving in many roles around the community. She is a board member of the Cincinnati Homeless Coalition, she has served two terms as co-chair for the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Continuum of Care Board, she is currently a member of the Hamilton County Continuum of Care’s Racial Equity Core Team, she is the chair of the Youth Workgroup, she co-chairs Lighthouse’s Racial Equity Core Team, and she supports runaway and homeless youth through the National Network for Youth.
At Lighthouse, Bonita serves as the Vice President of the Homeless Youth Services department, so she oversees the Meecum House, a basic center for youth ages 10-17; the Shakely Center for Youth, a homeless shelter for youth ages 18-24; Youth Housing Opportunities for youth ages 18-24 years old who are aging out of the child welfare system and potentially facing homelessness; as well as the Street Outreach Program.
She has presented both locally and nationally on the recruitment and retention of foster parents, moving youth towards self-sufficiency, transition age youth who are ageing out of the child welfare system and potentially facing homelessness, as well as effective housing strategies and outcomes for youth, youth voice, and human trafficking among LGBTQ+ youth.
Under Bonita’s leadership at Lighthouse Youth Services, over 2,000 homeless and at-risk youth are served annually, supporting their strategic plan to end youth homelessness.

In this episode, we are talking with La Shanda Sugg, a Certified Trauma-Responsive Therapist who works with a wide range of trauma survivors, including survivors of human trafficking. We talk a bit about what inspired La Shanda to enter into this field, her unique trauma-responsive approach, what it means to "move from coping to healing", and what self-care looks like when you're absorbing the trauma of other people on a daily basis.

La Shanda Sugg is a Certified-Trauma Responsive Therapist, she is certified in Developmental and Relational Trauma Therapy, and she has received training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
As a survivor of childhood trauma, La Shanda’s personal healing journey has led her to dedicate her life and gifts to helping others heal. Whether in therapy sessions, trainings, The Labors of Love Podcast, or in her books, her message remains the same, “It’s time to move from Coping to Healing.” La Shanda founded Labors of Love Counseling and Consulting, LLC based in the Cincinnati area of Ohio to create a space for people to learn about and heal from trauma. Her trauma expertise and ability to make complex concepts easy to understand make her work accessible. Her authenticity and transparency make people want to listen.

Listen in on our conversation with Women Helping Women on the intersections of interpersonal violence and human trafficking.
Women Helping Women is a domestic violence and rape crisis center serving the greater Cincinnati area. They work to prevent gender-based violence and empower survivors of dating violence, sexual violence, domestic violence and stalking to find hope and healing through confidential support services. Some of these services include a 24-hour hotline, individual therapy, individual crisis intervention, hospital accompaniment, court and law enforcement advocacy, support groups, and educational trainings for the community. Women Helping Women operates from a public health framework that is survivor-centered and fueled by the core values of diversity and inclusion. Annually, they serve over 15,000 clients throughout Hamilton, Butler, Adams and Brown Counties.

Amy Bleser is the Director of Hamilton County Direct Services overseeing crisis intervention services at Women Helping Women in Cincinnati, OH. She has a Master’s of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Xavier University and has been a Licensed Professional Counselor in Ohio since 2016. Amy’s experience began in 2011 and includes programs within the criminal justice system for offender rehabilitation, community based mental health treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy and trauma informed advocacy for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
Maria Cole is the Prevention Manager at Women Helping Women in Hamilton, Ohio. During her time in the field, she has focused on providing education to alcohol-serving establishments, colleges and universities, and professional workplaces. She has built two innovative prevention programs, WorkStrong™ and the It’s On Us Bar Initiative, both of which center on the Social Ecological Model. She values collaboration, inclusivity, and empowerment in her work.

Listen in to our conversation with Pat Stephens about how the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities is identifying and supporting victims of human trafficking who have developmental disabilities. We also discuss some of the reasons why people living with developmental disabilities are one of the most vulnerable populations to trafficking.
A bit about our guest: Pat Stephens is the Director of Provider Support Department of the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities. She completed her Bachelors of Arts at Slippery Rock University and her Masters in Education at Spring Arbor College. Pat has experience in the mental health field and 24 years with the County Board. She is a member of the Lucas County Human Trafficking Coalition and a part of the Partners Against the Trafficking of Humans or (PATH) program.

Listen in to our conversation with special guest, Yvette Young, about the impacts of racism on human trafficking. We talk about how systemic oppression and societal racism increase one's vulnerability to trafficking recruitment, how we can tell a more accurate and inclusive story of human trafficking, the correlation between historical slavery and human trafficking, and where hope is rising in the midst.
A bit about our guest: Yvette Young is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Trinity College and her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Cambridge College. Yvette has twenty-one years of experience working for non-profit organizations as a leader, director, trainer, advocate and clinician. She is currently working as the Associate Vice President of Programs and Advocacy at The Village for Families & Children in Hartford, Connecticut. Prior to her current role, she worked as the Human Anti-trafficking Response Team (or HART) Coordinator for five years and is currently one of the co-Chairs for HART. She provides leadership oversight for the Governor’s Task Force on Justice for Abused Children grant, the Juvenile Review Board and Residential programs at The Village. She is an appointed member of the Connecticut Advisory Council for Victims of Crime, a board member for the YWCA of the Hartford Region, a board member for The Underground, which is a grass-roots, faith-based initiative dedicated to ending sex trafficking and sexual exploitation in Connecticut, and she is also a member of the Department of Children and Families’ Statewide Racial Justice Committee. Yvette is a TEDX speaker and published Forbes author on the topic of human trafficking.

Listen in this month to hear how Ronda Deel, one of our most experienced volunteers, got started in the field of anti-human trafficking work, some of the experiences she has had along the way, and her advice on how you can also get involved!
A bit about our guest: Ronda Deel grew up on a farm in Eastern Kansas, earned degrees in English, and taught at a liberal arts college before relocating to Cincinnati. She spent several years recruiting and placing engineers, but most of her efforts have focused on community service and social justice activities. She served on one of the Cincinnati CAN committees, is a past-president of the Zonta Club of Cincinnati, was part of the founding team for Cincinnati Reads, and a leader for social justice projects with The AMOS Project. She is active in her church, singing in a choir, coordinating a class, serving on Justice Ministry and Prayer Shawl teams, and participating in the pastor’s study group. For fun, Ronda enjoys traveling in in her little motor home—with her cat.

Courtney is a Staff Attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Southwest Ohio. Through her role, she provides free legal services to domestic and immigrant survivors of human trafficking. Her primary focus areas are: family law, immigration and enforcement of crime victim’s rights. Prior to joining Legal Aid, Courtney was in private practice with a focus on immigration and criminal defense.

Jayme Brogan is a Harm Reduction services coordinator at Caracole Inc., where her primary role is to build and maintain relationships within the community and provide services to community members to reduce the spread of HIV. She has currently been with caracole for 1.5 years. She has a background in the mental health, substance abuse, and homeless services fields; working in substance abuse treatment facilities and most previously supervising the operations of the city’s largest homeless shelter. When not working, Jayme resides in her Northern Kentucky home with her 11 y.o. daughter and their two furr babies.

Chelsea Gaffey has worked with the Salvation Army Anti-Human Trafficking Team since April of 2016. As the Intake and Crisis Response Specialist, Chelsea is responsible for working with survivors of human trafficking through crisis intervention, hotline support, and case management. Chelsea also works collaboratively as part of the Anti-Human Trafficking team to assist in providing trainings, public speaking and community outreach. Chelsea works closely with local law enforcement, hospitals, and local law enforcement to connect with survivors.
Chelsea began her work in the Anti Human Trafficking field during her time in the United States Peace Corps where she lived and worked in the Philippines. During this time, Chelsea was assigned to a residential center for women and girls who were survivors of human trafficking. She worked with social workers at the center to provide life skills trainings, develop a library, and start a livelihood project for residents to earn an income while living at the center. During her time in the Philippines, Chelsea was chosen to speak at events for USAID on her work in anti trafficking efforts, and was asked by the US Ambassador to the Philippines to speak on her work at a dinner for the Head of the Office of Faith Based Initiatives at that time.
Chelsea graduated with a degree in Social Work in 2005 and is a Licensed Social Worker in the state of Ohio. Chelsea believes education and awareness of human trafficking are in integral part of eradicating modern day slavery.

Samantha Searls is a program manager at the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center (IJPC). At IJPC, Samantha's education and advocacy work focuses on breaking down the unjust systems of human trafficking and immigration. Samantha has her Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis and her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Indianapolis. Prior to her time at IJPC, Samantha served as a community organizer working on environmental, economic and social justice issues both in St. Louis and in Cincinnati.

Jonathan Turbin is the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center's (NURFC) Coordinator of Initiatives against Modern-Day Enslavement. His role includes managing the online presence of End Slavery Now, an anti-trafficking 501c3 managed by tNURFC; taking the lead on programs related to raising awareness of human trafficking at NURFC; and representing NURFC to the larger anti-trafficking activist community. Jonathan has a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Oregon with a focus on museum studies, with an emphasis on exhibit interpretation at museums focusing on the African American experience. He has a particular interest in social justice and inclusive freedom. Jonathan currently lives in Cincinnati's Northside neighborhood with his partner, a dog, and two guinea pigs.

Erikka and Lydia interview ESC Director, Erin Meyer!
Erin Meyer began her work with the Anti-Human Trafficking Program at The Salvation Army in Cincinnati at its inception in May of 2012. Ms. Meyer has also served as the Coalition Manager of End Slavery Cincinnati (ESC) since November of 2011. She is responsible for management of the Anti-Human Trafficking Program serving the Southwest Ohio area. This includes: oversight of case management to trafficking victims in the area, groups, outreach programming, the 24 hour hotline, and other direct service programming; the development and maintenance of service provider, law enforcement, and member contacts with the coalition; the coordination of public education programs sponsored or implemented by the coalition; and the supervision of staff and volunteers. Ms. Meyer has been certified as a Trauma-Informed Practitioner by the Tristate Trauma Network and is a licensed Trauma-Informed Care trainer through the Risking Connection program of the Traumatic Stress Institute. Ms. Meyer has a Masters of Public Policy, with a concentration in Social Policy from the University of Maryland, College Park and is a licensed social worker in the state of Ohio with a Master’s of Social Work from Northern Kentucky University.
