Adj. Prof. architect Tay Kheng Soon is from the first locally trained architects graduating in 1963 from the Singapore Polytechnic School of Building and Architecture. The architecture school was later relocated to NUS. As such, he is acutely concerned that architecture and living environment must be rooted in climate, culture while modernising and humanising people and place. He was founding Chairman of the Substation, the Experimental centre of the Arts community. He was Chairman of SPUR, Singapore Planning and Urban Research Group in the70’s and later president of SIA receiving its Gold Medal in 2010. Born in 1959, Mel Ferdinands is best known for being a member of one of Singapore’s top bands, Gypsy, in the 1980s. He achieved early success at the age of 12 after performing with his younger brother Joe on Talentime in 1971. However, pursuing a professional music career was fraught with challenges in the 1980s, amid shifts in Singapore’s nightlife scene.
Born in 1957, Jacintha Abisheganaden dominated the theatre scene in the 1980s, and was a familiar face on TV and radio in the 1990s and early 2000s. She describes how she has helped to develop Singapore’s arts scene, and how her experiences have influenced her as a jazz singer.
Dr. William Wan is the General Secretary of the Singapore Kindness Movement. He is also a winner of the Active Ager Award (Council of the Third Age) 2011. Prior to taking on this role as General Secretary, he was practising law and managing a psychometric company. Better known as C Kunalan, Singapore’s most decorated sprinter took part in both the Tokyo (1964) and Mexico (1968) Olympic Games. In the latter, he made it to the second round of heats in the century sprint, eventually finishing 25th out of the 32 competitors in that round.
Although he participated in the shorter sprint events at the Olympics, it was in the 400m relay scene that he truly reigned.
He earned 15 Seap Games and five Asian Games medals over 12 years, and his 1974 national record in the 400m relay event still stands to this day.
Dr Gerard Ee Hock Kim is a public figure championing social service rights and issues in Singapore. He is the son of the late Ee Peng Liang, a Singaporean philanthropist and the Father of Charity in Singapore.
Dr Ee is currently on the Board of MOH Holdings Pte Ltd and Chairs its Audit Review Committee. He is also the Chairman of the Agency for Integrated Care, Chairman of the Charities Council, Member of the Steering Committee of SG Cares and Group Chairman of Canossian Mission Singapore.
Dr. Ee was awarded the Public Service Medal (PBM) in 1993, the Public Service Star (BBM) in 2003 and the Meritorious Service Medal (PJG) in 2007. He is a Fellow Chartered Accountant of Singapore, and Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

Rahimah Rahim was, it could be said, born to be a singer and performer. Her father, Rahim Hamid, was a film editor and singer who in the 1950s was known as the Nat King Cole of Singapore. Her mother was the actress Mariam Baharom. An uncle was Ahmad Daud, a popular singer and actor in the 1960s and 1970s.
The eldest of four children, Rahimah was just six when she landed a role in the 1961 film Korban Kasih (Love Sacrifice). Other film roles included Masuk Angin Keluar Asap (1963) and Kasih Ibu (1965) and a Malay sitcom Pak Awang Temberang, and she also sang on several variety shows.
Her singing career got underway when she was about 14 and began to sing with her father at nightclubs. He had to smuggle her in because the clubs were off-limits to children under 18. When there were spot checks, she would hide under the grand piano or run outside. After leaving school in 1971, she regularly sang with him. In 1972 her first extended play, Mana Ibu Mu, was released.
Her big break came in 1974 when she took part in the Kimi Koso Talentime held in Tokyo, Japan. She beat more than 100 singers from across Asia to the top prize, which included a three-year recording contract with Warner Music. Rahimah would have liked to have stayed on in Tokyo, but returned to Singapore at her mother’s insistence.
Kishore Mahbubani is a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore (NUS).
Mr Mahbubani has been privileged to enjoy two distinct careers, in diplomacy (1971 to 2004) and in academia (2004 to 2019). He is a prolific writer who has spoken in many corners of the world.
Mr Mahbubani has received significant international recognition for his many accomplishments. The Foreign Policy Association Medal was awarded to him in New York in June 2004 with the following opening words in the citation: “A gifted diplomat, a student of history and philosophy, a provocative writer and an intuitive thinker”. He was listed as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines in September 2005, and included in the March 2009 Financial Times list of Top 50 individuals who would shape the debate on the future of capitalism. He was selected as one of Foreign Policy’s Top Global Thinkers in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, he was described as “the muse of the Asian century”. He was selected by Prospect magazine as one of the top 50 world thinkers for 2014.
With a career spanning more than four decades, Brian Richmond (born 7 September 1947) is regarded as a veteran radio presenter, host and sports commentator in Singapore.
In his younger years, Brian Richmond was also a National Youth athlete representing Singapore in Football.
