How can I make retirement the most rewarding phase of life?

With recent market volatility, many clients have come to Tommy Cloud at Third Act Retirement, asking about gold and silver.
This summer marks 50 years since the US Dollar came off the gold standard, in August of 1971. Today gold is one of the most traded investments in the world, with daily volume around $145 Billion. It's only surpassed by the S&P 500 and US Treasuries...but not by much.
Silver, although more closely correlated to the markets than gold, has been a consideration as of late because of its role in technology.
Today, we break down the numbers of gold and silver over the years. Once again it comes back to King Solomon: diversification.

King Solomon wrote, "In an abundance of counselors, there is victory."
It's important, in all areas of your life, to have trusted counsel from experts in various fields. This may be a doctor, an attorney, even a lawn care expert. And this is especially true for a financial advisor. Too often, people take a "Do It Yourself" approach in an effort to save money. This doesn't usually end well, particular in the case of financial advice.
Tommy Cloud and Jon Gay explore that dynamic in today's episode of Cloud's Retirement Chat, and Tommy also explains his analogy of the decision you make when you have that first beer, or when you strike up a conversation with that pretty girl at a party.

People often come into Thomas Cloud's office with one of several fairly common problems, and they’re almost all caused by not having a plan. So, as we look at some of these frequent retirement-planning problems, most of them can be solved simply by creating a plan. Here are 14 common problems that we often see with people facing retirement:
They're do it yourself-ers.
High investment and advisory fees.
Poor asset allocation and lack of diversification with investments.
Paying more taxes than they should.
Spending more than their budget will allow.
Not knowing what their budget should be based on their income.
Not knowing how to use insurance properly.
Not having an updated will, or not having a will at all.
Not having their investments well-positioned for the next market crash.
No idea what their portfolio did in 2002 and 2008 when the stock markets went down dramatically.
No non-correlated asset classes to the US/Global stock markets, and they do not know how to calculate the proper withdrawal rate from their portfolio during retirement.
Not having a good idea as to how long it would take their investments to recover if we have another recession or market drop.
Not reviewing their retirement or financial plan regularly.
A lack of peace of mind. This is worst and has the most harmful impact on people, I have found.
In our next episode, we will cover 5 strategies to avoid these mistakes in retirement.

In our second episode, Tommy Cloud rejoins Jon Gay to continue the discussion about financial advisors. We break down the fees and how advisors are paid.
We walk through fee-based vs commission advisors, using some hard numbers and different types of mutual funds as examples. Tommy also explains the worlds of variable annuities and life insurance.
Sure, trips to Hawaii are a nice job perk for commissioned advisors, but Tommy believes in the fee-only system, which means advisors are held to the fiduciary standard and must act in their clients' best interest.
Finding an advisor is an awful lot like dating. And Tommy has a worksheet on his website that you can bring with you to an appointment to make sure all of your questions are answered. https://static.twentyoverten.com/5aa0095bc8f5cd2c20b6f275/kHodme0bpOUG/2015CompensationandFeeDeclaration.pdf

In our first episode, Tommy Cloud and Jon Gay break down the different types of advisors, including no fee and fee only.
No fee advisors can be compensated in many different ways, including by bonuses and commissions paid by the companies they sell for. Fee only advisors are held to a fiduciary standard, which requires them to act in their clients' financial best interest.
Tommy talks a little bit about his history as an advisor, having worked in both roles, and why it was important to him that he hold himself to a fiduciary standard and act in his client's best interest, despite the temptation to make money in other ways. This removes many conflicts of interest.
We also touch questions you should ask a financial advisor when evaluating whether or not to have a relationship with them. Tommy even has a downloadable form that can help with this process. https://static.twentyoverten.com/5aa0095bc8f5cd2c20b6f275/kHodme0bpOUG/2015CompensationandFeeDeclaration.pdf
