Susan Blanchard, who is the director of the Baptist House of Studies right up the road from us at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, VA! Susan will be preaching at WBC on Sunday, May 5th! Before she arrives, our pastor, Rev. Art Wright, sat down with her to talk about what's going on with the Baptist House these days, how it serves a vital purpose in the Baptist ecosystem here in Virginia, and how we might partner with them in ways that are mutually supportive. It just so happens that our pastor currently serves as the chair of the Advisory Committee, and so we have a wonderful relationship with the Baptist House, and we are excited for you to get to know Susan and her work there better!

Author, activist, visual artist, race abolitionist and archivist, Reverend Dr. Starlette Thomas is a womanist in ministry and the principal architect of a raceless world. A pastor, denominational leader and clergy coach, she is a natural shepherd of words and people, leading them to their most authentic and best expression. Starlette regularly writes on the sociopolitical construct of race and its longstanding membership in the North American church as an associate editor and the director of The Raceless Gospel Initiative at Good Faith Media. Her podcast, The Raceless Gospel, takes her listeners to church and to a virtual church service where she and her guests tackle that taboo trinity— race, religion and politics. An unrepentant academician and bibliophile, Starlette graduated in May with a Doctor of Ministry degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. Her thesis is titled "Take me to the water: A raceless gospel as baptismal pedagogy for a desegregated church."

This is the homily (a short sermon) from our Good Friday service, which culminates our journey through Lent together. Our Good Friday service was a dark and heavy service that flowed between hymns and readings and special music. As we moved through the service, the candles on the altar were extinguished one by one, until at last we found ourselves in total darkness at the end. We left in silence, a stark contrast to the warm welcome we would find in two short days on Easter morning.

We were delighted to welcome David Cariens as part of our ongoing Speaker Series! We hope you'll find this recording of his lecture on the epidemic of gun violence in our country to be helpful. In it, he explores the causes of the ongoing epidemic, as well as the ways in which we as churches and individuals have a crucial role to play in putting a stop to gun violence in our country.
David served for thirty-one years as a CIA officer and political analyst. In that capacity, he wrote for all levels of the U.S. government, from the president to policymakers and working-level analysts. Currently, he is a member of the Governor’s Commission to Investigate the May 31, 2019 Mass Shooting at Virginia Beach.
David is the author of a number of books. Most relevant to this topic include A Question of Accountability: The Murder of Angela Dales, which examines the shooting at the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Virginia in 2002. Angela Dales, mother of Cariens’ oldest grandchild, was killed in that shooting. David also wrote about the Virginia Tech rampage, Virginia Tech: Make Sure It Doesn’t Get Out. All profits from these two books go to charities; he takes no money for his work on behalf of shooting victims and their families.

We are thrilled that the Rev. Dr. Lisa Wolfe will be joining us on April 23rd at 3pm as part of our ongoing Speaker Series! Dr. Wolfe will share a lecture entitled "Giving Birth to Divine Revolution." Dr. Wolfe is a professor of Hebrew Bible at Oklahoma City University, and has published widely on feminist perspectives on Scripture, especially on Ruth, Esther, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Judith. Her popular video series, "Uppity Women of the Bible," is one that we've used with great success at our church in the past. Lisa is a renowed speaker and we are delighted to welcome her to our church.
Dr. Wolfe's lecture is on Saturday, April 23rd at 3pm., and you can attend in person or via Zoom.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. John Dominic Crossan on Saturday, March 5th as part of our WBC Speaker Series! As a preparation for this event, our pastor Art sat down to talk with Dr. Crossan to get to know him better. We hope you'll enjoy this bonus podcast conversation as they talk about Dr. Crossan's career and research, the historical Jesus, and what exactly Jesus was up to in the first century.
On March 5th from 3:00 to 4:30pm, Dr. Crossan will present his lecture at Williamsburg Baptist entitled “The Vision of Easter,” based on his recent book, Resurrecting Easter: How the West Lost and the East Kept the Original Easter Vision (2018). In it, Crossan contends that Christians today would be wise to recapture the earliest understanding of the resurrection event. Unlike the Western image of a solitary Jesus rising from an empty tomb, Crossan observes that the standard image for the resurrection in Eastern Christianity is communal and collective, and this offers a profound opportunity for reflection and hope today.
Dr. Crossan’s lecture will be an exercise in "visual theology," with images plus commentary. There will also be plenty of time for Q&A. Note: He will be joining us via Zoom due to Covid precautions. We have been following the Narrative Lectionary this past fall as it has guided us through the Hebrew Scriptures (what we commonly call the Old Testament), and this week we will finally turn the page to the New Testament and the Gospel of John!
In this special podcast episode, our special guest, Rev. Dr. Amanda Miller (Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at Belmont University) walks us through important background information about the New Testament and the Gospels. She and our pastor, Art, talk about the historical context of the New Testament, and especially the ways in which it is embedded in the Roman Empire. They discuss what is included in the New Testament, why there are four Gospels, and the ways in which the Gospel of John is unique.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide and mental health are often taboo topics in churches. In this special episode, our pastor talks with Lynne Fetter, MSW, about some practical guidelines for individuals and churches to respond well to mental health crises and loved ones who may be suicidal. Lynne also offers guidance to persons who may be struggling with suicidal ideations themselves. Finally, Lynne and Art discuss some theological ideas underpinning our understanding of mental health and suicide that may be helpful for churches and individuals supporting persons in crisis. This fall, we are returning to the Narrative Lectionary each week in worship. The Narrative Lectionary begins in Genesis and traces its way through the Hebrew Scriptures (what we often call the “Old Testament”) during the fall, before beginning in the New Testament at Christmas. Preaching from the Narrative Lectionary helps us follow the narrative arc of Scripture and the ongoing relationship between God and humanity that it reveals.
In this special podcast episode, our special guest, Rev. Dr. Amanda Miller (Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at Belmont University) walks us through the entire Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) to provide a general framework to the passages we will encounter in the Narrative Lectionary this Fall.
Dr. Miller is a sure and able guide in this task, and her wide-ranging conversation with our pastor, Rev. Dr. Art Wright, is lively and spirited! They discuss the historical background and context of the Hebrew Scriptures, the importance of reading sacred texts in community, and the idea that there are internal conversations among the various voices in the Bible. They also talk about contradictions in Scripture, what it means that the Bible is inspired, and how reading the Bible leads us into deeper wisdom and faith. It is a conversation well worth your time, and sure to enrich your understanding of what it means to read the bible as people of faith!

Originally from Roanoke, Virginia and a graduate of Virginia Tech, Justin Pierson is the pastoral resident at Richmond’s First Baptist Church. He holds a Master of Divinity from the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond as well as a Masters of Theology from Union Presbyterian Seminary. Justin’s ministerial interests revolve around the intersections of faith, culture, and justice as he tries to reclaim the identity of Christianity as a force for good in the world today. He lives in Richmond, Virginia with his wife Tori and their spoiled mutt, Fanny. Justin enjoys traveling, cooking, the perfect cup of coffee, and anything happening outdoors.

Miller currently works at the Virginia Baptist Historical Society/Center for Baptist Heritage and Studies on the campus of the University of Richmond. She graduated from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond with a Master of Divinity degree in 2017. She served as the Children's Ministry Associate at Central Baptist Church in Chesterfield County while in seminary. Before attending seminary, Robbie taught elementary school for seven years. She graduated from the University of Virginia in 2007 with a Master of Teaching in Elementary Education degree and a Bachelor of Arts in English degree. She is originally from Franklin County, Virginia, but now resides in Richmond, Virginia with her husband, Alex Miller.

THE GREAT SPIRITUAL MIGRATION (PODCAST RECAP)
During the late fall and early January, we had a wonderful Zoom-based series on Sunday mornings based on Brian McLaren's book, The Great Spiritual Migration. In it, McLaren urges churches and Christians to shift (or "migrate") from our old, outdated understanding of Christianity as a system of beliefs to a new way of life based on love, which in turn leads to more redemptive communities and practices.
