VES offers the opportunity for seniors to explore a subject in an area of their interest through an advanced study. We are both interested in sports and the media and thought that this podcast would be a great way to learn and to share our work with others. Throughout this podcast series we hope to become better interviewers, better understand the media, and to share our work with others to enjoy. Beginning with a quick NBA Recap leading into Jack talking with Damin Altizer (UVA ’09) about his career as a basketball trainer at all levels. Got to hear about his journey of being a progress engineer to becoming the founder and CEO of DR1VEN Training as well as being the head coach at St. Anne’s-Belfield. We touch on what draws select players of high NBA caliber talent to train with a former walk-on like himself. We wrap up the episode with the development of some of Damin’s clients such as current NBA pros; Ty Jerome (OKC) and De’andre Hunter (ATL) and the leaps that they have both taken in their sophomore seasons.
Jack and Holly talk with Ismael Plet (VES ’20, ORU ’24) about Oral Roberts historic run to the sweet 16 and what the program has accomplished this season. We get to chat with him about the unique experience of the Indianapolis March Madness bubble and what it was like playing in a Covid year. We touch on the tournament heroics of Oral Roberts dynamic scoring duo; Max Abmas and Kevin Obanor. Ish then tells us what makes a Scott Drew disciple like Paul Mills such a successful coach and leader. We close it out with a few other great stories like Coach Mills locker room dance moves, what the food was like in Indianoplis, and much more.
Jack and Holly talk with Devon Hall (UVA ’18) about playing basketball overseas in the Basketball Bundesliga League for Brose Bamberg and then touch on his time spent in the NBA bubble playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Oklahoma City Blue (G-league Affiliate). To close it out we talk with Devon about his days spent on grounds at Virginia and how the program has taken a tremendous leap in since Coach Bennett has arrived, and many more great stories.
We address the passing of former VES lacrosse coach and former VES Assistant Director of Admissions Mike Gardiner at the top of the episode. Holly and Jack then talk to Jaelin Llewellyn (Princeton ’22, VES ’18) about his basketball experiences at the collegiate and high school level. We chat with him about why he chose Princeton, the Chris Paul Elite Camp, playing in MSG and Cameron Indoor, and much more.
Big NBA talk with VES guard, Piercen Young. Jack goes into depth on the James Harden trade to Brooklyn, talks about what player empowerment means today, and NBA quarter season award picks.
