We are the Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Go Retrievers!). Join us each week as we curate content from UMBC‘s social science faculty, students, community partners, and visiting guests and lecturers!
The Center for Social Science Scholarship promotes excellence across the social sciences at UMBC. Spanning disciplines and programs, we connect scholars who engage in social scientific study—asking key questions about social life, addressing problems of local and global concern, sharing knowledge about public issues, and connecting research to practice and policy.
Guided by the core principles of inclusion, equity, and diversity, we encourage intellectual exchange and cross-cutting dialogue as we strive to advance social progress and equity in ways that are critically relevant not only to UMBC but to our local, national, and global communities.
To foster high quality social science inquiry, we offer research and grant support, host trainings, promote campus and community events, and provide opportunities for academic as well as public debate, for the benefit of the university and society.

On today's episode we hear a rebroadcast of a 2025 special book talk sponsored by UMBC's Center for Social Science Scholarship and the UMBC Dresher Center. The event featured Dr. Felipe Filomeno, Professor of Political Science and Director of the UMBC Global Studies Program. Dr. Filomeno discusses his recent book, entitled Christian Cosmopolitanism: Faith Communities Talk Immigration (2025, Temple University Press). On today's episode we hear a rebroadcast of the 2025 UMBC Mullen Lecture, sponsored by UMBC's Center for Social Science Scholarship and the UMBC Department of Economics. This year's lecture was delivered by Dr. Annamaria Lusardi. Dr. Lusardi is Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, Director of the Initiative for Financial Decision-Making, and Professor (by courtesy) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Dr. Lusardi’s remarks take up the question of financial literacy among ordinary people around the world. In the talk, we learn about how much people know about personal finance, who is most vulnerable to economic predations due to their lack of financial literacy, and what we can do about it.

On today's episode I speak with Prof. Michael Wilson, Professor of Drama and Director of the Storytelling Academy at Loughborough University in Leicestershire, UK. Dr. Wilson shares information about his ongoing research agenda into storytelling as a scientific tool. This project's connection to UMBC is through Dr. Sarah Jewett of UMBC's Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health, who is completing a Fulbright semester at Loughborough this year.

The roundtable, which took place in October 2024 was the second in-person iteration of a series designed to bring together fabulous UMBC alumni from across the social sciences. The roundtable was moderated by CS3’s acting director, Dr. Eric Stokan. The panel brought together the following fantastic UMBC alumni:
Michele Berry received a master’s degree in environmental policy from the school of public policy at UMBC, having completed a bachelor's degree at the New School. Michele now works as a stormwater coordinator for the Chesapeake Stormwater Network.
Amanda Cardone currently works as a survey methodologist at RTI International. Amanda received a MA in applied sociology at UMBC, in which she honed her expertise in survey science and programming.
Amy Soukoup currently serves as a community data analyst for Live Baltimore, a nonprofit that helps potential homebuyers find the right place to live in Baltimore, among other goals. Amy received a MA in economic policy analysis from UMBC.
Manisha Vepa earned a bachelor’s degree in global studies and economics at UMBC in 2018 and now works as an economic research analyst and East Asia expert at Ascendant Program Services. LLC which contracts with the federal government.

On today's episode we hear a rebroadcast of the 2024 UMBC Constitution Day Lecture, sponsored by UMBC's Center for Social Science Scholarship and the UMBC Department of Political Science. This year's lecture was delivered by Jared DeMarinis, the Maryland State Administrator of Elections. Mr. DeMarinis describes how elections work in Maryland, some of the state's early contributions to the way elections are conducted across the United States, and discusses the challenges of administering elections in a time of deep political polarization.

On today's episode we hear a rebroadcast of a special event sponsored by the UMBC Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program. In April of 2024 (Earth Month, coincidentally), the Sondheim program convened a special panel of five policy experts on climate change to discuss Maryland's climate future.

On today's episode I speak with Dr. Jason Loviglio, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Media and Communication Studies at UMBC. Dr. Loviglio is the co-editor of The Routledge Companion to Radio and Podcasting Studies, and recently published a piece about podcasting entitled "From Radio to Podcasting: Intimacy and Massification" that echoes many of the themes in our discussion. Dr. Loviglio is also co-editor of Radio Journal: International Studies in Broadcast and Audio Media, among many other professional activities related to audio media. He is also a board member at Wide Angle Youth Media, non-profit organization that provides Baltimore youth with media education to tell their own stories and become engaged with their communities.
On today's campus connection, we hear about a recent book from UMBC Media and Communication Studies Associate Professor Elizabeth Patton. Dr. Patton's book is entitled Easy Living: The Rise of the Home Office, and explains key recent trends in work and society--both with great relevance to the rise of podcasting!

Kiffy Nwosu is an undergraduate computer science student from Maryland who has worked as a researcher at UMBC since high school, and is now a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Chloe Evered, originally of Houston, Texas, is a recent graduate of the Georgetown University department of linguistics with a minor in Chinese. Chloe is now pursuing a master’s degree in linguistics, also at Georgetown.

On today's episode we hear a rebroadcast of the 2023 UMBC Constitution Day Lecture, sponsored by UMBC's Center for Social Science Scholarship and the Department of Political Science.
The lecture, which took place in September of 2023, was given by keynote speaker Delegate Mark S. Chang. Delegate Chang has represented the 32nd District in the Maryland House of Delegates (Anne Arundel County) since 2015, and also serves as the Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee, among a variety of other vital committee positions in our state legislature. On today's episode we hear a rebroadcast of a presentation that formed a part of the 2023 UMBC Africana Studies Conference, organized by Dr. Gloria Chuku, Professor and Chair of the UMBC Africana Studies Department.
The lecture, which took place in May of 2023, was given by keynote speaker Dr. Aili M. Tripp. Dr. Tripp is Vilas Research Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tripp’s research has focused on gender/women and politics, women’s movements in Africa, transnational feminism, African politics (with particular reference to Uganda and Tanzania), autocracies in Africa, and on the informal economy in Africa. She is presently working on a project on women’s political leadership in African autocracies and a second project on women’s political citizenship and conflict globally.
