Reverend Mildred Parker is the Executive Minister for Administration and Ministries at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. She has been at Shiloh in this role since July 2021. She previously worked at thread (Alaska’s Child Care Resource & Referral organization) as a professional development specialist from 2014-2021. Rev. Parker has over 20 years of experience in early childhood education. She has a Master of Science with a specialization in Teaching Adults in Early Childhood Education Field degree. She loves spending time with her husband of 26 years and traveling.
Lori A. Colbert is a lifelong Alaskan. She is a graduate of Claremont McKenna College and Willamette University College of Law and the owner of Colbert Family Law, LLC. Lori is a member of the Alaska and American Bar Associations and she serves as the Alaska State Delegate for the American Bar Association House of Delegates. She is active in her community as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Alaska Alumnae Chapter, and she serves as Chair of the Board of Directors for Shiloh Community Development, Inc. Lori is also an active member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. She is the mother to two daughters and grandmother to two grandsons.

These practices will include a 45-minute recovery meeting followed by a 45-minute yoga practice. These classes help build community, support recovery, and get some compassionate movement into the body.

- The television network ABC announced its fall schedule earlier today. On it, are no new scripted television shows. In the wake of the recent Writers Guild of America strike, the network is, according to the Hollywood Reporter, “leaning all the way into its unscripted roster…”
Another show that won’t be a part of the fall line-up: “Alaska Daily.” The show was recently canceled after a truncated first season of 11 episodes.
This cancellation directly impacts one local Juneau writer, Vera Starbard. Known for her writing on PBS’s “Molly of Denali,” plays at Perseverance, including “Devilfish” and “Our Voices Will Be Heard,” Vera was on the writing team for “Alaska Daily” and penned the finale episode.
Guest Host Rhonda McBride had a chat with Vera about when she learned of the cancellation, the impacts the series had, and Vera’s takeaways from her work on the show. * The Tongass Chapter of Trout Unlimited – Community Fly Casting Night + The Tongass Chapter of Trout Unlimited is a volunteer-based organization focused on the conservation of local fishery resources, especially wild trout and salmon populations and their habitat. This Thursday, they will be having a free Community Fly Casting Night at Twin Lakes from 6:00-8:00 pm. * Juneau Dance Theatre’s Fine Arts Camp + Juneau Fine Arts Camp has been operating annually since 1977. It is a multi-disciplinary day camp that offers full-day and half-day options for children in K-6 grade (though they will also accept 7th graders). Hosted at JDHS: Yadaa.at Kalé from June 5-30. This year they have classes in art, music, dance, sports, and science. - Indigenous jazz musicians, ensembles, and big bands have their place in the contemporary jazz world as well as in jazz history. There were small ensembles and big bands on reservations across the US in the first half of the Twentieth Century and several Indigenous musicians who ascended to celebrity with jazz as their medium.
Since time immemorial, songs have been the vessels for prayers and stories for the Indigenous people of the Americas. The goals of JKIBB are to celebrate and continue that tradition, to compose and perform new music inspired by traditional melodies, and to create a community of like-minded peoples from all backgrounds to uplift the next generation of Indigenous jazz musicians. * Alaska State Museum – VISCERAL: VERITY, LEGACY, IDENTITY – Alaska Native Gut Knowledge and Perseverance + Opening May 5, 4:30 – 7:00 pm, lecture with artist Sonya Kelliher-Combs, Sven Haakanson, and conservator Ellen Carrlee at 6:30 pm
Visceral: Legacy is a further interpretation of Sonya’s solo exhibition themes through objects that she and fellow gut enthusiast and Alaska State Museum conservator Ellen Carrlee chose from the museum’s permanent collection. As a guest curator, Sonya brings the richness of her childhood in Nome, her international career as an artist, her life in Anchorage, and her insights as a person of Iñupiaq, Athabascan, and European heritage.
These three galleries will be open through the summer 2023 season, augmented by special workshops and lectures, and closing in mid-October 2023. * Juneau Artist’s Gallery Kelsey Hoke Martin – Featured Artist for May + Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Kelsey Hoke Martin, artist and owner of K.Hoke Contemporary, made the move to Juneau with her family in 2020 just as the world was starting to shut down because of COVID. Once landing in Alaska, she found artistic inspiration everywhere, “I almost feel like Alaska was always supposed to be home. Moving to Juneau just blew the doors open on my creative outlook; every turn here is breathtaking,” K.Hoke said.

Lauren has said, “addiction is a disease of denial. It thrives in the shadows and in isolation,” and now shares her story, helping people to move beyond the stigma and the shame and realize that they are not alone.

She is currently hosting a two-week intensive workshop of weavers working to finish a child-size Chilkat ceremonial blanket. This moment is significant because the workshop is increasing the number of weavers that have the knowledge to weave full-size ceremonial regalia.
On today’s Juneau Afternoon, Lily and two fellow weavers join Volunteer Host Andy Kline to discuss the workshop and its culminating “First Dance Ceremony” on Feb. 1, where 20 robes will be danced.
