You're in a new chapter. Whether you're switching careers/ majors, becoming a first-time parent, grappling with grief or a diagnosis, reentering the workforce, celebrating a big accomplishment, or shifting your worldview, one thing’s for sure:

Life is a never-ending series of transitions. It is full of new beginnings, endings, celebrations, losses, and adventures.

This is our space to talk about the "messy middle" – that liminal space when you can't go back to where you were, and yet you also haven't 'arrived.'

On this podcast we share a range of stories, coaching calls, and practical tips on how to become the active designer of your life no matter what transitional phase you’re in.

I'm walking through simple, doable shifts for each one, so that when you do add in the extras, they're actually working for you instead of papering over a gap. Before launching this podcast, I sent out a survey. You took the time to fill it out, and today I'm sharing the results so you can see who else is in the room.

Respondents came from all over: full-time working moms, established business owners, stay-at-home moms, military families, and single moms, most with toddlers at home.

In this episode I'm sharing what you told me: the time gap between the hours you have and the hours you want, the real strategies you're using to carve out space for yourselves, and the episode topics you're most excited about. The support situations across this community were all over the map, and that shaped how I think about this show and who it's for.

I'm officially pivoting the podcast to focus on motherhood, creativity, identity, ambition, and life design while raising tiny humans. In this episode, I reflect on how the show and my life have changed since it began, how it was always designed to grow through different seasons, and why motherhood has become the most aligned direction going forward. I'm also taking a short break from publishing new episodes to recalibrate behind the scenes, with the podcast relaunching on April 11.

This episode looks at the small joys we reclaim through hobbies while parenting tiny humans—right in the middle of busy days, shifting seasons, and unpredictable nap schedules. We talk about the different ways moms weave creativity into real life, from nap-time solo hobbies to shared "plus-one" activities with little ones, with examples that work across a range of support systems and capacities. It's a warm, grounded reminder that what lights you up still matters, and an invitation to find micro-moments of joy without guilt, comparison, pressure, or perfection.

This is a follow-up to Episode 97 on blooming where you’re planted — but this time, we’re asking:

What if the soil isn’t right?

This one’s for anyone sitting in the middle space — between blooming and uprooting, between “I can make this work” and “I think I need to go.”

If you’ve ever wrestled with your environment — whether it’s a job, a place, or a relationship — this episode offers reflection, stories, and gentle coaching to help you discern your next step.

💧 For the person crying in their car.

🌆 For the new mom Googling “am I allowed to leave this city?”

🎨 For the creative quietly suffocating in a place they’ve outgrown.

In this episode: * How to know if your environment is nourishing or draining you * Why blooming takes more than mindset — it takes space, safety, and support * Three paths: Stay and adapt, co-create change, or lovingly let go * Personal stories of choosing to leave, to shift, and to stay with boundaries * Gentle prompts and somatic cues to guide your own next steps

📍 Listen to Episode 97 first if you haven’t already — and then come back here when you’re ready to go deeper.

🌱 Because sometimes, the most self-loving thing you can do… is repot yourself.

Content Disclaimer: This episode mentions suicide and suicidal ideation, which may be distressing for some listeners. Please take care while listening. If you are in crisis or need support, we encourage you to reach out to a mental health professional or call a local crisis line.

Are you co-creating your environment—or just consuming it?

In this episode, we explore what it means to stop waiting for life to feel better—and start showing up as a quiet yet powerful designer of your own ecosystem.

What does it really mean to co-create your life… especially when you weren’t handed the map, the money, or the magic wand? I share how I’ve built belonging in unfamiliar places (including a raw story from my time living in Japan), what it’s taken to cultivate community from scratch, and why your calendar might be your most overlooked creative tool. We talk seeds, slow growth, social capital, and the kind of life design that doesn’t rely on perfect conditions.

This one’s honest, down-to-earth, and ready to meet you right where you are.

In this car episode, Patricia shares about the importance of giving yourself the space to process life transitions. She shares practical examples about finding safe spaces to process what needs to be processed so that you have the resources you need. So often, when folks go through major changes — whether they are challenging and painful or super fun and exciting — they can feel all consuming.

Then, you may feel compelled to talk about it. it may even be the only thing you want to talk about. It could bleed into other aspects of your life, and, depending on the context, may or may not be met with your desired response.

Whether you are looking for support, compassion, wisdom, patience, acceptance, love, a mentor, a cheerleader, a shoulder to cry on, someone who has been through what you are going through… you just have to find it. That’s what we talk about in this episode.

Erin and Patricia discuss Erin’s gestational process toward her dream life and vision for her future. This was the first collaborative episode pre-recorded for Season 2, do we hope you enjoy the fruits of the early creative process, too!

About Erin (in her own words):

The beautiful life around me is not a mistake, and the miracle of my journey is in no way lost on me. From being nearly swallowed by addiction, chaos and trauma to walking a spiritual path of safety, ritual and love. I have learned to cultivate a new existence that is rooted in nurturing my body and mind, connecting with my own feminine embodiment, releasing guilt and shame and giving birth to my voice. All of this growth has led me in the direction of sharing those gifts with other women, and creating a way of merging that energy to help us stand in our power and own our stories. I’m growing this community in my business, space.s, and finding ways to continue to cultivate continued growth in my own life as a measure for the true potential of every woman to succeed.

If you’ve ever been curious about surrogacy and how it works, this episode is for you! In this panel, Patricia interviews Candice Swanson and Ariel Taylor about their experience as multiple-time surrogates, who it can benefit, ethical and legal considerations, myths, and more! Candice and Ariel bring unique perspectives as citizens of different countries (the US and Canada!), and additionally have other professional experiences in the birth world.

Candice Swanson is a single mom to 2 kids living in southern California running a luxury photography business and a 2nd time surrogate and loves the beach!

Ariel Taylor is a Registered Social Worker (RSW) and Psychotherapist who has been involved in the surrogacy and fertility community since 2015 and has guided countless couples and individuals on their journey to parenthood. After her own complicated miscarriage as a surrogate in 2016, Ariel discovered that there was very little specialized counseling for her painful situation and realized a much larger need for mental health professionals that deeply understand the fertility world. She opened Carried with Love (CWL) to provide 100% virtual support for those struggling with infertility, loss, pregnancy challenges or postpartum mood disorders. Ariel has carried 5 babies as a gestational surrogate which resulted in 4 live births – the most recent in the summer of 2023. Although Ariel is now retired as a surrogate, she continues to be an active presence in the fertility community and leverages her strong social media following to normalize all roads to parenthood for women and couples around the world.

We have access to great resources, and it’s really important to find what resonates with you. Motherhood is a huge change; it's a beautiful transition into a new version of ourselves. In this unique episode, Patricia and her writing mentor, Catherine Filloux, interview Effy Redman about the gestational process for her memoir, Saving Face.

About Effy, our featured memoirist:

Effy Redman’s writing investigates the intersection of disability and identity, building bridges in minority communities. Drawing from her journey as a lesbian with Moebius Syndrome (a rare condition of facial paralysis), she writes into the experience of otherness, finding resilience beyond the shadows. Her first book—SAVING FACE—a memoir of living with physical disability—will be published by Vine Leaves Press in March 2024. Redman has published work in The New York Times, Vice, Ravishly, Chronogram, Berkeley Poetry Review, and Iron Horse Literary Review, among other places. She holds an MFA in Memoir from CUNY: Hunter College, where she received an Honorable Mention for the Helen Gray Cone Fellowship, and a BA in Literature/Drama from Bennington College, where she was an Ellen Knowles Harcourt Scholar and a Bennington Scholar.

About Catherine Filloux, our cohost:

For the past three decades, French Algerian American award-winning playwright, librettist and activist Catherine Filloux has been traveling to conflict areas writing plays that address human rights. Filloux’s new play “How to Eat an Orange” opens this season at La MaMa Theatre in New York City, and her new musical “Welcome to the Big Dipper” (composer Jimmy Roberts, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”) premieres Off-Broadway this season at the York Theatre in New York City; a National Alliance for Musical Theatre finalist. Catherine’s new play “White Savior” is nominated for The Venturous Play List. Her many plays have been produced around the U.S. and internationally. She is the librettist for four produced operas, broadcast on Cambodian national TV, on Broadway on Demand, chosen for Opera News Critic’s Choice; and “Orlando” is the 2022 Grawemeyer award winner--the first opera by a woman composer and woman librettist in the history of the Vienna Staatsoper. Catherine has traveled for her plays to countries including Bosnia, Cambodia, Guatemala, Haiti, Iraq, Morocco, Northern Ireland; and to Sudan and South Sudan on an overseas reading tour with the University of Iowa's International Writing Program. Filloux received her French Baccalaureate in Philosophy with Honors in Toulon, France, and is the co-founder/co-director of Theatre Without Borders. www.catherinefilloux.com

Hi, I'm Patricia Cosulich-Smith, a certified life coach, podcaster, playwright, social innovator, and expectant new mama. Oh, and obviously the host of this the Transitions podcast. In keeping with the show's history of highlighting life transitions, I decided to launch a new season focused on the theme of gestation because it is top of mind for me as a pregnant lady/new mom. So there will be some pregnancy and new parent content balanced with other content about the gestational process for ideas, creative work, businesses, and movements more broadly, and even a little social science thrown in

Here's the official season Description Gestation: the central theme of season two is an exploration of the growth period that precedes the birth of ideas, art projects, movements, and even life itself. It embodies the liminal space where potential is nurtured and shaped, representing not only the physical journey of pregnancy, but also the creative evolution of concepts, the planning of social movements, and the development of innovative projects and works of art.

Through in-depth conversations with a diverse range of guests, we will journey through the rich tapestry of gestation, uncovering the stories of visionaries, activists, and creators who have harnessed the power of this formative phase to bring about significant change and give life to their aspirations.

I'm excited. You're hopefully excited. Text this trailer to your bestie and let's make change our bitch.

Preparing for marriage is a unique time in which couples often navigate a lot of important decisions together. This extends far beyond the joy (and stress) of wedding planning– you are planning a household and a life together! This could mean rearranging your finances, moving, family planning, and a lot of other potential changes for both of you. Not to mention navigating different cultural backgrounds, personalities, and families of origin. It’s a lot! Couples often idealize engagement as a particularly romantic period, which it can be! With that being said, it’s also a HUGE transition, so give yourself some grace.

Patricia thought it would be fun to chat with Katie about her unique engagement experience! Katie DePaola Silverman is an entrepreneur, author, speaker and mental health advocate. In 2015, she founded Inner Glow Circle, with the mission of providing alternative education for thousands of women to become certified coaches and use their lived experiences for the betterment of others. Through IGC, Katie built the first all-women, all-online accredited coach training course, helping thousands start businesses of their own. She is a founding member of Bo’s Effort, a foundation started in honor of her late brother Bo, and a board member of Building Traditions Society at Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center Foundation.

In her bestselling book, At Least You Look Good: Learning to Glow Through What You Go Through, Katie shares her most vulnerable and often funny reflections on how to deal with the hardest parts of life—and her best advice for people who want to “glow through what they go through.” Katie is a fierce mental health advocate, who built her business amidst challenging times, growing from a self-funded startup to a multi-million dollar business. She has been featured in TIME, Entrepreneur and Forbes, as well as over 60 podcasts.

The podcast is officially a one-year old!

One year ago today, I officially launched.

I launched messy.

I hated my cover art.

There was no intro/ outro music.

There were only two episodes.

I didn’t do a big buildup marketing campaign.

Pre-launch, I actually had one episode I published 3 months prior without telling anyone.

Then I finally made the shift and dove in.

So, whatever you’re dreaming about… Start.

Do the thing.

One year from now, you’ll be super proud of how far you’ve come.

It’s not about how messy you are when you start. It’s about the person you become in the process.

Amanda is our first guest to discuss an ideological transition. She was raised in a patriarchal movement, and then made the decision to depart from the community system she was raised within to choose something different. She was the first in her family to leave. Thank you, Amanda, for sharing how this decision changed your life.

Amanda is a certified life coach with a passion for helping women step into their authentic, feminine power. Raised in the Christian Patriarchy movement, she realized her gift for empowering women while still in her teens, first as a seamstress, then later as a licensed hair stylist, professional ballroom dancer and dance instructor. Now an advocate for mental health, breaking free from toxic relationships, and surviving the patriarchy movement, she continues to pursue her passion for helping women design authentic lives and realize their goals and dreams. She lives in small-town Massachusetts and listens to far too many true crime podcasts.

Kabir likens this season of his life to building the plane as it falls from the sky, rather than as you fly it. This is an honest and helpful example of living mindfully and intentionally through uncertainty, as Kabir fundraises to pay for rent and his team of five caregivers (a necessity for him to survive).

We also discuss how to become great compost. Food for thought.

Kabir is a writer, entrepreneur, visionary, and mentor in his 20th year of quadriplegic paralysis. A founding member of the Patient Pioneers at Project Apollo (how we met), graduate of the world-renowned Generating Transformative Change leadership development program with Pacific Integral, and the executive director of Open Field Awakening, he places his deepest embodied prayer and most sincere efforts towards the fruition of realizing an integral, ethical, and practical expression of impact in the world.

Jordan is a multi-passionate and creative individual, and she is also pregnant! We chat about Jordan’s experience with pregnancy and how each trimester felt uniquely important in the process of shifting into the identity of “mother.” Jordan opens up about navigating her ambition and giving herself grace. Katelyn and I recorded two interviews, four months apart. While the discussion content is somewhat similar, the energy feels different. This exemplifies how much we can shift in a matter of months.

Katelyn is making major moves! Thanks, Katelyn, for being an awesome human and for your vulnerability on the podcast.

Katelyn Larson is a 30 year old writer trying to figure out what's next after leaving a 5 year unhealthy relationship and smashing the age old cliche that women need to be married and have kids by a certain age. She believes that women can start over at any age and follow their dreams. She recently launched her own podcast Winging Life with Katelyn, Thursdays on Spotify, where she talks about life, love, and how starting over isn't as scary as we assume it is.

Also, did we mention she recently landed a book deal?! She’s in a new chapter of her life, and she’s making major moves. She closed one door, and while it may not have been easy, a lot of other doors started opening not too long after. Katelyn, we love seeing you thriving and out there living your dreams!

After this conversation, Katelyn and I decided to redo it… four months later. So be sure to check out episode 36 as well. Even though the discussion content is similar, the energy feels so different. It’s a powerful example of how much our lives can change within months.

Patricia, Michael, and Charla discuss the period of transition after a breakup. Patricia initiated this conversation because most of the post breakup content she could find online revolved around heartbreak, bad karma if you break someone’s heart, or how to get your ex back. So, here is a different conversation.

It is possible to be intentional about what you are calling into your life going forward. This extends beyond romantic relationships– it is also an opportunity to evaluate whether you are in alignment in other areas of your life. This includes community, work, hobbies, spirituality, your relationship with yourself… We have experienced growth and transformation after breakups.

No matter how much it hurts, it is possible to heal. It is also possible to expand your capacity to love, and to create even greater alignment in your life than you had before.

When a significant relationship ends, it is normal and healthy to experience intense grief. The body’s response to this type of grief is very similar to a death. So, if you are struggling, you are not alone.

About Michael Vargas, Panelist:

Michael is an international facilitator with nearly 10 years of experience. Synthesizing his unique background in psychology, improv and design thinking, Michael facilitates workshops and speaks to organizations on developing collaborative and productive team cultures and works with teams to develop psychological safety, navigate difficult conversations, create clarity around decision making, build trust, practice the process of innovation and so on.

He has 15 years of improv experience, performing with a variety of improv troops and theatre companies all over the country. He enjoys dancing, Brazilian jiu jitsu, dinner nights with good friends and banana pancakes.

She has been a leader in the wellness industry for over 20 years. She is a co-parent to 3 boys and is a living example of how beautiful a co-parenting life can be.

This is a powerful episode about grief, addiction recovery, and motherhood. Erin is a strong example of a woman who chose to heal; to learn to love herself and lead herself.

Erin and Patricia met through @innerglowcircle coach training, and are excited to be signed up for each other’s group programs this fall! Erin’s program, Renaissance Woman (co-led by @amandabethflynn), starts October 3rd. Patricia’s program, Your Next Chapter, starts Sept 21st. We can’t wait to work with you to facilitate your next level of transformation!

This time, Patricia Cosulich (your host) is in the guest seat! Jake Mayers is the interviewer. Jake is a fellow coach, Lyme warrior, and performer/ artist, and he brings a fresh and fun perspective to this episode (while also keeping it real, as always).

Together, they discuss how Patricia learned to embrace that life is transition (which did not come naturally to her). As a highly inquisitive and curious person, Patricia liked to question and understand everything. She was also a planner. After a number of events in her life, she chose to stop asking why. In learning to let go and embrace change and adaptability, she found the freedom to enjoy her life.

In her early adult years, improvisational forms of dance and theatre helped her learn to be in the moment, connect with her body and intuition, and listen and communicate with others more deeply. Her healing process has allowed her to step into the fullest expression of herself yet– one where she can be creative, action-driven, have fun, and do so without burning out or flaring up.

She believes you can be the active designer and conscious creator of your own life, and is passionate about developing practical tools and systems to make that a reality, all within a space of gentleness and compassion.

Your Next Chapter starts on September 21st.

About Your Guest Host, Jake:

Jake Mayers is a Transformational Coach that helps people battling chronic

illness regain control of life.

Jake turned the pain of his 15-year battle with Chronic Lyme Disease into his

mission to help others. But first, he failed Kindergarten- yes, it’s okay to laugh.

That was when he began cultivating the ability to respond to challenges in

an empowering way. He learned to embrace his unique differences as

opportunities, rather than obstacles. That mindset propelled him through

Lyme Disease and into launching a coaching business to help people live

more fulfilled lives!

Jake has a unique ability to connect with and support people through

difficult times. He endured years of treatments, during which he was unable

to function. He learned the hard way, but eventually turned things around. He

went on to develop a 4-Step signature coaching model to help others do the

same. Jake’s work surrounding his 4-Step Model has delivered massive,

sustainable transformations.

He’s an action-oriented empath who can’t wait to empower change in your

life!

Bobby is a great example of someone who developed her own system and designed a career that synthesizes her unique gifts. Patricia loves how Bobby uses personal style as a conduit to help clients create more alignment in their lives and then show up, be seen for who they truly are, and make an impact.

Bobby Carroll grew up in Rochester, MN, and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Masters in counseling psychology. After working in womens' crisis counseling for some time, she knew she wanted to continue to work with women in impactful ways, but also desired more fun! Hence, the creation of her image consulting business, Living in Your Element – an intersection of psychology, styling and soulful transformation. After 25 years of working with 100's of clients, speaking on top stages, creating products and licensing women all around the country in her system, she sold her business. Recently, she reincarnated as The Shopping Shaman, her true love – bringing all of who she is to magical shopping trips and retreats for women.

Bobby is married with three adult children - one on her side, two on her husband Jonathan’s and a grandbaby on the way. She, Jonathan, their dog, Mr. Boo, and cat, Lulu, live very happily in Avila Beach on California’s central coast. When she isn’t styling and shopping, Bobby loves traveling with Jonathan, connecting with friends, and dancing.

Jess is our first creative coach on the show! Patricia has been wanting to invite her since before our launch. In this episode, we discuss how bodies and creative processes are cyclical and how to design your life to honor those "seasons." Jess shares about what it looks like to adjust her pace as she navigates a new injury. We also explore our relationships with ideas and creativity.

Jess Grippo is a dancer, performance artist, author, and creative coach. After leaving the classical ballet path and not dancing for years, she started making her own dance videos, alone in her room. While that habit continues, she’s also added quite a few others: starting up an inclusive, creative dance community online and in NYC (You Can Dance Again), making comedic interpretive dances about her dating life and the menstrual cycle (Hungry Ovaries), writing a book and video series (Dance With This Book), and supporting others in their creative, expressive unfolding through her coaching practice. Her work has been featured at TEDxNYU, Lincoln Center's Dance On Camera Festival, the New York Comedy Club, The Vagina Monologues opening act, and more. Her puppy Lucy is her only boss and she frequently daydreams of moving into the loft from Flashdance.

This episode should really be entitled "Designing Your Life AND the Beauty of Being a Borderlander." We also discuss liminal time. Fun fact: Rachel likes to collect qualitative data on her own life and makes word clouds based on her dream patterns!

Rachel takes a human-centered design and value-proposition approach to direct, manage, grow and measure the Brink SBDC program, operation, finance, and team for federal, state, local and private grants for the #1 ranked accelerator in San Diego for innovative companies (tech, science, new products, etc).

Rachel invests her time and energy where community good and equitable economy meet. She is an emerging thought leader in:

  • Local & Sustainable Business Development
  • Social Entrepreneurship
  • Civic Tech & Gov2.0
  • Economic Gardening

This was such a healing conversation for me! I loved connecting with Brit about this liminal space as we heal. It seriously felt like holding up a mirror at moments. Cheers to the awkward, brilliant, and beautiful adventure of moving forward and becoming a fully expressed version of YOU. Brittany Elliott's Lyme and mold journey started seven years ago while living in a moldy beach bungalow in San Diego. She went years being undiagnosed/ misdiagnosed which ultimately led her to become her own doctor.

Over her years of research and treatment, she gravitated to a more holistic lifestyle and treatment which eventually pushed her to try bee venom therapy. The bees have been extremely beneficial to Brit's healing, but she says that she wouldn't be where she is without a positive mindset and the power to heal.

Brit deactivated her former Instagram, @britterbeez.

Jessie Quirke went through an accelerated period of change recently. One event set off a cascade of changes in every other area of her life. It started with a move, which prompted a breakup, a new puppy, and a podcast launch within a matter of months. She is choosing to view this season this excitement, because she loves surprises. Thanks, Jessie, for always being so open about what it means to seek alignment and live intentionally!

Jessie is a health nut who LOVES animals and the outdoors. Professionally, she is a Certified Integrative Nutritionist and wears a variety of hats in her different businesses.

In 2014, she was in a car accident that served as the catalyst for her health journey. This immune compromising event brought Lyme out of dormancy. Then, in 2017, when she was living and working on a yacht in Mexico, she became very ill from toxic mold. By the end of her time on the boat, she was forgetting names, words, and even where she parked her car in a small parking lot. It got to the point where she actually thought she may die, so she quit with no job lined up, no place to live, and no idea how to get healthy. She traveled around in her car, stayed with friends and family, and even showered at the beach occasionally. Jessie even slept in her car many times during her health journey, but mostly because she loves the idea of van life.

Today, she is Lyme-free, living in a healing environment that she loves in Laguna, going on hikes and beach walks, doing bootcamp and hot yoga on the daily, and going to coffee shops with no makeup (or acne to hide)! Jessie is in a place where she truly loves herself and is excited about life. Her hope is to help anyone else who is struggling to get to this place.

Christina opens up about her journey back into clinical practice after being couch-bound. Christina, thank you for your vulnerability and transparency! I enjoyed the realness of this conversation, as well as our discussion about how chronic illness can absolutely rock you identity and your relationship with yourself. Christina Kantzavelos is a neurodivergent and first-generation (third culture) Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), life coach, writer, and chronic illness warrior. She received both her BA and MSW from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and her MLIS from San Jose State University (SJSU). Her experience includes 14 years of clinical experience in a range of settings, including both outpatient and inpatient psychiatric services, acute inpatient hospital services, insurance case management, home health, hospice, distaster mental health (humanitarian work), and private therapy and coaching.

She specializes in treating clients with chronic health conditions (aka spoonies and medical refugees) and trauma (including medical trauma). Chronic medical conditions (i.e. diabetes, dysautonomia, EDS, Lyme disease, bartonella, Hashimoto's, mast cell activation syndrome, vasculitis, back and neck pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, vertigo, IBS, IBD, sickle cell disease, mold illness, etc.) often come with significant challenges, like fear, anxiety, medical PTSD, and may interfere with relationships and daily function. It is her experience and believe that chronic illnesses are often rooted in trauma(s) that cause a chronic stress/ fight-or-flight response, not allowing the body to prioritize healing. She utilizes various holistic evidence-based treatment modalities and practice-based evidence such as EMDR to get to the root, with an added focus on mindfulness techniques, positive psychology, neural retraining and strengths-based therapy. In addition, she provides life coaching, case management, and elder and disability care planning and support.

She is also a writer, and an award-wonning gluten-free and health-conscious travel and lifestyle blogger, @buenqamino.

This is a personal reflection on launches: past, present, and future.

Questions for you:

  1. What are you launching in your life?
  2. What might shift if you launched that dream?
  3. If you were an outside observer of your launch process, what might you see?

I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to DM me to share your responses! Or, if you're feeling brave, maybe you'll even post about it. ;)
