Nick Pearson, CEO of Tyson Properties, said that the sector had already weathered a number of rate increases since November 2021 when the Reserve Bank began to hike interest rates upwards from what many believed to be unrealistic lows during the Covid-19 pandemic, believes that there has been a correction in interest rates over the past year and that this latest increase – which is likely to be one of or even the last in this cycle – will enable both buyers and sellers to readjust to a post pandemic economy.

“That doesn’t mean that there are going to be less transactions – but an interest rate hike definitely forces people to be more correct when it comes to pricing their properties for sale or making an offer on a property,” he said.
Pearson added that an interest rate hike also forced more homes on to the market, particularly those priced under R3,5-million.

At the same time, it also reduced the number of first time buyers in the market. “The rental market will become more buoyant with more people choosing to rent rather than buy,” he continued. This is in marked contrast to an increase in the number of first time home owners when interest rates were low as more people could afford to pay back home loans.

However, he said that an interest increase would affect different parts of the market differently with wealthier buyers more likely to weather the increased cost of home loan repayments. In addition, different provinces were also likely to respond differently with Pearson noting that the rates hike was unlikely to stem demand or slow the more buoyant market in the Western Cape.

After opening doors in 2020, just as the pandemic hit, Adoozy is South Africa’s first mobile power bank rental network, providing an on -the-go power solution to citizens of Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg . How it works is that people can rent a mobile power bank for 24 hours from any of the Adoozy power towers that are strategically placed in public locations/spaces.

In South Africa, the market is driven by additional factors – load shedding and more affordable access to smartphones, tablets, and mobile devices. Load shedding – expected to remain a reality for the next 18 months – impacts the user’s ability to remain charged and connected, either to work or to their lives. This unreliability of electricity supply has made it critical for local users to find reliable solutions that keep them connected even when the power is out.

“The beginning of the construction of the Elandskop BESS is a positive development in our efforts to alleviate the pressure on the national electricity grid,” said André de Ruyter, Eskom Group Chief Executive, speaking at the event. “This is a direct response to the urgent need to address South Africa’s long-running electricity crisis by adding more generation capacity, to the grid, and also to strengthen the grid by adding more storage and transforming capacity.”
Phase 2 of the project includes the installation of a further 144MW of storage capacity, equivalent to 616MWh at four Eskom Distribution sites and one Transmission site. The solar PV capacity in this phase will be 58MW.

The BESS project will utilise large scale utility batteries with the capacity of 1 440MWh per day and a 60MW PV capacity. It will be one of the largest BESS projects to be developed and implemented in South Africa.

“Eskom has identified distributed storage as an alternative to support renewable energy expansion in South Africa and we have taken the necessary steps to ensure the successful implementation of the BESS project,” said Velaphi Ntuli, Eskom’s General Manager: Distribution, Operations Enablement.

All Phase 1 sites are planned to be commissioned by 30 June 2023 and Phase 2 by December 2024.

BPO [business process outsourcing] is one of the fastest-growing sectors in South Africa with significant year-on-year growth,” commented Tammy Chetty, Managing Director of Webhelp South Africa. “We’ve had a significant government and stakeholder support leaning into the incredible job opportunities this sector creates for young, unemployed individuals with little or no work experience.”

Chetty said the quality of skills found in South Africa and the high level of English-speaking employees have seen it become a ‘hotspot for BPO’, with organisations across the world looking to South Africa to offshore non-core work packages and capitalize on the value proposition South Africa has to offer.

Beyond the skill level demonstrated by the young South African workforce, Chetty said the country had set itself apart in the BPO sector through the sheer resilience shown during the pandemic. When so many companies were forced to shut down and retrench, Webhelp was doing the unthinkable by opening up a new branch in Umhlanga Ridge – providing jobs at a crucial time in the country’s economic history.

“Moreover, I feel that the industry showed great resilience by coming together and working in partnership to lobby the role-players in the sector to secure essential service status during the lockdown,” continued Chetty. “This is one of the sectors that employ the youth. Shutting our doors would have left many young unemployed individuals resulting in greater risk for families and society as a whole.”

She said many competing countries were not able to sustain operations during this time, forcing them to shut doors. However, Webhelp was able to remain open with essential service status and transition by adhering to COVID protocols in the workplace and through employing flexible work operations.

Twenty-seven million people use our roads daily, with the majority including workers and students on their daily commute. Safety on our roads is a discussion all South Africans should be having. Poor road and public transport infrastructure, lack of road safety education, and inadequate street lighting are among the causes of the accidents we see on our roads.

An alarming report from UCT’s Centre for Transport Studies reveals that 47 people are killed on our roads daily with that number climbing to 17 000 people annually. The report goes on to show that the main cause of child deaths in South Africa are a result of road accidents. We cannot simply ignore these statistics and must rally together to affect change and protect people on our roads.

Jonsson Workwear introduces its High Viz range of protective workwear that has been used to combat low-light conditions in a range of environments. Aware that poor visibility on the roads increases the number of accidents, the company together with The Jonsson Foundation is embarking on an initiative to protect all road users by increasing their visibility thereby reducing the risks of road accidents.

Mrs. Feziwe Gambo, an enthusiastic Principal at House-Kids Educare Centre, an ECD center located in the Ezimbokodweni area, south of Durban, sits at her office preparing for her day whilst also watching her children arrive at a bowl of FUTURELIFE® porridge. For many of the children in her centre, this is usually their first meal. Feziwe is filled with contentment as she knows that this meal will be enough to kick start their day and give them the much-needed energy and nutrition to begin learning in the right way.

According to FUTURELIFE® Managing Director, Mark Bunn, the campaign raised the awareness that was so desperately needed. He extends his thanks to the South African public and all the company’s partners and donors who supported the project in its mission to distribute five million meals.

“Furthermore, we are also grateful to the social media influencers and media houses who used their platforms to reach a wider audience; they have played a massive role in helping FUTURELIFE®, the Nelson Mandela Foundation & HOPE worldwide South Africa to raise awareness and benefit children in need.”

“With all of this support, we are well on our way to reaching our target,” Mark reports. “All funding received during Mandela Month will be going to the Nelson Mandela Foundation to support their ECD Programme. But it doesn’t end there.”

Mark says that FUTURELIFE® will continue to work with both the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the national NGO, HOPE worldwide SA, which has been collaborating with FUTURELIFE® for many years to address hunger and malnutrition amongst vulnerable children.

“Through valuable partnerships such as these, we will continue to reach more children with better nutrition,” says Mark. “FUTURELIFE® began in 2007 as a social project to help improve the lives of malnourished and disadvantaged people in Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim then was to create the most nutritional product possible at the lowest cost and with total convenience. Through ongoing scientific development, this ethos remains the driving force in the business today and we will continue to use both our products and our brand as a force for good.”

Every child deserves to get the right start in life and Mark believes that it is up to ordinary people to make this happen. “Let’s live every day as if it is Mandela Day,” Mark concludes.

There is a massive demand for bitumen in road construction projects in South Africa, especially related to the strategic infrastructure programmes outlined by President Cyril Ramaphosa that need to be addressed for South Africa’s economy to be put back on track. FFS Tank Terminals’ facilities will provide the industry with the security of a bulk supply of bitumen following the untimely demise of the local refining industry.

In addition, the Vala Zonke programme, announced by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, aims to address the scourge of potholes nationally. The availability of bitumen will enable this critical infrastructure programme to meet its goals and keep the economy of South Africa moving forward.

The expansion consists of the construction of storage tanks with a total capacity of 26 500 cubic meters (26 500 000 litres) and will be implemented in two phases. Phase 1 will be constructed for rental and will include three storage tanks with a capacity of 7 500 cubic meters (7 500 000 litres), including product heating facilities, an import pipeline, two loading gantries, and two weighbridge facilities – phase 1 is already underway with all engineering design work completed and expected to operate by September 2023. Furthermore, South African civil and tank fabrication contractors have been appointed, ensuring job creation is prioritised during the expansion.

Despite being put on hold we continued in the background to work on the curriculum and refining it. Working together with SETA and the Department of Education. Finally, 2 years later we are on the road. Our computer school bus is finally visiting schools and engaging with excited young learners.

The computer course has 8 theory sections, with an assessment at the end of each. The assessments that are completed by the learners are then compiled into a portfolio of evidence, which is then audited by an external moderator.''

The computer course outline is as follows;

Section 1 – History and Importance of Computers

Section 2 – Computer Ethics

Section 3 – Basic Computer Components

Section 4 – Basic Computer Skills and Navigation

Section 5 – Basic Word Processing

Section 6 – Basic Excel Processing

Section 7 – Basic PowerPoint Processing

Section 8 – Internet and Browser

''With this initiative, we aim to reach as many students within the Durban and greater surrounding area, who do not have access to technological infrastructures such as Computers, iPads, and the internet. We aim to connect the youth to the world and broaden their horizon, to all the opportunities that are available to them.

All of this could not have been possible without the blessing from McDonald’s SA, the Department of Education, Our Partners, MyMobile ZA and Newburn Shopfitters, and our DHANS Group Team…. All of whom supported and contributed to bringing this project to life.

To our loyal guests who visit our restaurants - WE thank you - you have made this possible.

We are humbled by what we have achieved thus far, and we remain committed to empowering as many young learners as we can on this journey of providing access young learners to computers and information technology.

This is just the start of our journey.

WE LOVIN' IT….."

In terms of the agreement, The Sharks will provide SA Harvest with 500m² of dedicated warehouse space at Hollywoodbets Kings Park, a space that SA Harvest can be proud of and call their home.

This significant support of SA Harvest’s efforts to relieve hunger by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste enables SA Harvest to double its storage capacity. “This means we have the potential to house sufficient stock to deliver a million meals at any point in time. SA Harvest’s model is based on the premise that if we can redirect some of the 13 million tonnes of perfectly edible, nutritious food that goes to waste every year in South Africa, we can significantly alleviate hunger while at the same time reduce the impact of food waste on the environment.

The problem in this country is not a lack of food. The problem is a system which deprives millions of people access to affordable nutritious food and while our strategy is to reduce hunger, we are also involved in systemic initiatives that will ultimately help end hunger in our country,” says Alan Browde, CEO of SA Harvest.

Ntsindiso Nongcavu from Coastal Links Port St. Johns says, “We are against oil and gas drilling in the ocean. This ruling, in our favour, means that our lives will carry on, as our livelihoods depend on fishing. We are happy that our plans have been fulfilled and our livelihoods have been secured, not just for us but for future generations. This outcome motivates us because our government pays no mind to its people, but instead seems to want to make foreign companies richer. This is why we, as small-scale fishers, oppose oil and gas. Because if the onslaught of offshore oil and gas continues then future generations will have no interest in the sea as a means of life. We are glad that Shell did not win this case because it would mean that thousands of fishers will not be able to use the ocean as before because it will be zoned off and turned into a no-go area. People will have to be evicted to make space for these operations. That would mean that people's rights will be taken away from them.”

A spokesperson for the Amadiba Crisis Committee in Xolobeni Nonhle Mbuthuma says, “We have decided not to go to the Makhanda High Court to listen to the court ruling. We have decided to gather as the seven (7) villages to listen to the ruling at The Great Place. We are very happy that the judgment is in favour of our community. This means that the planet wins because it has been saved. If the judgment had been in favour of Shell, then that means that the whole planet loses everything, because this case is not just about livelihoods. It is about saving the planet and humanity.”

Sinegugu Zukulu from Sustaining the Wild Coast says, “Unlike other coastal stretches in South Africa, indigenous communities have maintained continuous possession of this land, despite waves of colonial and apartheid dispossession. This is no accident. Our ancestors' blood was spilt protecting our land and sea. We now feel a sense of duty to protect our land and sea for future generations, as well as for the benefit of the planet.”

A key issue in the case of Shell’s seismic survey off the East Coast is that the company relied on an old Environmental Management Programme (EMPr) from 2013. However, even in 2013, many affected communities were not consulted about what a seismic survey might mean for them, since many did not know about the exploration right application and were not even listed as interested and affected parties. Another issue is that media channels and languages selected, further served to exclude many traditional communities. Indigenous languages, commonly spoken in the region, were ignored (only English and Afrikaans were selected), and no radio or community publications – which are popular in these communities – were used.

Furthermore, according to The Green Connection, it appears that Shell did not consider (or chose to ignore) the migration season for hump-backed whales, in addition to the juvenile turtles that would come down the coast in the Agulhas current, into the survey area during December. Yet, it's own 2013 EMPr stated that they should try to “avoid surveying during December”. Why did Shell choose to go commence its seismic survey in December 2021, when it should have known about the risk to these animals?

“Since launching baby clothing in November 2020, we saw the need to give parents even more of the unbelievable value we are known for. After two years of thorough market research, and talking to parents and soon-to-be moms, we have designed a store experience to make parenting affordable and convenient for all South Africans. As you would expect from Mr. Price, the new concept will differentiate it from competitors through its famous fashion-value formula. Further differentiators include an in-store shopping experience that is tailored to the baby and toddler shopper as a one-stop destination, and a digital platform with the same features that have made Mr. Price the most visited South African fashion retailer.” – Donovan Baney, Managing Director of Mr. Price.

Global Team Horse Racing recently trialed GTH Junior Riders at a fun event held at the Equidome Indoor Equestrian Arena in Beaulieu, Midrand on the 22nd of May 2022.

As this was the first time for the concept, access was limited and the event was used to gather feedback and to establish if this was something that would get the support of parents.

In the lead-up to the event, some of the participants had the opportunity to meet some of South Africa’s best jockeys, ride a simulator and visit the starting gates to experience what it is like on a big race day.

“This was such a positive experience for my son,” enthused Heather Miller, mother of Finley, “He is an experienced rider, but there is no doubt that the program improved his riding and even though there is a competitive element to the event, the day finished with Finley having established many new friendships.”

The team format makes it a lot more fun for kids of all ages and skill levels. Sunday’s event had two teams competing, over six races, with four ponies per race and all the participants had three or four opportunities to race. Adding to the atmosphere, was the live commentary during the races by Alistair Cohen. GTH Junior Riders will follow a similar format as the GTH live series, meaning that the kids can relate to the race day with their “lived” experience. Experiencing the challenges, albeit on a smaller scale, is sure to breed respect for the jockeys, who are often the unsung heroes of horse racing.

Adding digital items to Google Wallet (like boarding passes) is equally simple and can often be done with a few clicks. For example, after completing the purchase of a flight on an airline website, users will see a button labelled “Add to Google Wallet” that will create the digital version of that item in their Wallet.

“Most importantly, security and privacy are built into every part of Google Wallet, making payments safer and allowing people to transact seamlessly and with confidence throughout the day. This will allow users to make transactions using a virtual card number (a token),” continues Mokoena.

“We are very excited about the launch of Google Wallet in South Africa. We hope that people not only enjoy how easy it is to use, but also how secure it is for them to transact their business confidently,” concludes Mokoena.

If users don’t have a card saved and would like to add a new card to Wallet, they can select the “Add a card” prompt in the carousel at the top of the wallet app page and they will be prompted to review and accept the Issuer terms and conditions before use. Once they have accepted and verified their card information, their cards will be tokenised and ready for use in Google Wallet. They will then be able to use them to tap and pay in stores and pay online wherever the Google Pay or contactless symbol is visible.

Galito’s at Boxer KwaMashu officially opened for trade within the Superstore on the 15th of August, ushering in a new era of collaboration and convenience in the supermarket and takeaway restaurant industry.

Chris Theron, Boxer’s Group Executive: Operations said the opening within Boxer was an obvious move that will add even more convenience and value to the Boxer shopper experience. “Galito’s is a wonderful and proudly South African brand that offers world-class meals at affordable prices. It makes complete sense as South Africa’s favourite Discounter to work with them and offer our many shoppers an even easier way to access their products.”

Shoppers at the flagship Boxer store in KwaMashu now have the capability to complete their shopping and grab a fresh Galito’s meal, in-store. “Boxer KwaMashu is the perfect place to launch this unique collaboration. Whether a guest is coming to Galito’s and then to Boxer or vice versa, they benefit from the convenience, well-priced value, and friendly service offered at both Galito’s and Boxer. It’s a win-win for our shopper, and that’s the main goal for both brands, said Galito’s Managing Director Francois Rousseau.

Curious KwaMashu residents flocked to the opening on Monday morning with many noting that it was a pleasant surprise to see their favourite discounter and flame-grilled chicken take away under one roof. “Boxer already provides the best deals for me, now I get to grab a Galito’s on the way out too! That is exactly what I want!” said shopper Godfrey Mhkize, at the opening.

As part of the supermarket’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, the minis are made from 100% recycled plastic - including discarded refrigerators, water bottles, and goggles - as well as FSC-approved, responsibly sourced cardboard and paper. The handy collector’s case is locally made and 100% recyclable.

Fun facts

• What could you do with 3 800 old refrigerators? Turn them into 798 000 Simple Truth Raw Honey minis. • Or 80 000 pairs of old swimming goggles? Make roughly 10 Aquelle minis with each pair of goggles, of course. • Energizer minis? Simply recycle approximately 125 000 x 500ml PET bottles. • A 500ml PET bottle can be used to create roughly 6 Energizer minis or 10 Oh My Goodness! Spaghetti Bolognaise minis. • In total, around 38 000 recycled refrigerators, 166 000 pairs of recycled goggles, and 210 000 PET bottles were used to create the Checkers Little Shop 3 minis.

Julika Falconer, CEO of Zero2Five Trust, said that vital early learning - which had already suffered during the COVID-19 lockdown – was at risk of being lost again as some pre-schools initially remained closed and affected children who had lost everything at their homes were unable to return to school.

She said that it was only thanks to immediate relief grants from the LEGO Foundation, DGMT, Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, Standard Bank’s Tutuwa Foundation, JT Ross Charitable Trust, Illovo Sugar SA, and the Grindrod Family Centenary Trust, that the Zero2Five Trust was able to immediately reach out to many affected areas over the past four months.

“Our initial response was a large-scale assessment, clean-up operation, and the distribution of food donations and warm blankets in eThekwini, ILembe, uMlalazi, and uThukela. The Samuels Group is a proudly black-owned South African business founded in 2000. During its first few years of operation, the company specialised in the wholesale distribution of petroleum products. In 2016, the company expanded into the automotive industry and launched 13 Service Centres (Independent Workshops) under the banner of Samuels Service Centres.

These service centers, spread nationwide, are fully accredited RMI automotive service and repairs workshops that offer quality and professional vehicle repair services.

The Samuels Group in Cornubia, which specialises in the marketing and distribution of petroleum products, was amongst the first few businesses to be attacked by the poor community who went from business to business looting goods and destroying property in July last year.

The first order of business was to ensure that the company resumed its operations, albeit not fully at that time. This accomplishment was achieved within four days after the looting. What followed was the hard work of rebuilding the warehouse to return it to its full functionality, a process that took more than 10 months.

During that time 25 more individuals were employed and a total of R1 296 922.89 was paid to casual workers. Mr. Samuels says he wants to ensure that more sustainable jobs are created by his business. “It is our duty as businesses to help in alleviating the jobs crisis that the country faces. We are playing our part and we implore our counterparts to do the same”.

Apart from continuing to create jobs, the Samuels Group has an NPO, called the Samuels Siza Foundation through which it seeks to shield the less fortunate being shielded from socio-economic hardships.

After its launch in 2019, the Samuels Siza Foundation embarked on its first initiative called the Mudita Initiative (Beggars Initiative) which assisted the destitute homeless people of Durban. Mudita is a Sanskrit word that means “finding joy in the good fortune of others”.

Are people becoming an old-fashioned, unfavourable resource? After all, they can be emotional, unreliable, can pass on viruses and even loot businesses. There has been a rise in retrenchments and automation, often due to cost cutting pressures, fear of trade unions and one-sided labour laws that protect employees, often at the expense of the employer. We also hear of careers becoming redundant within a few years as artificial intelligence takes over and singularity becomes the norm. Does this mark the end for the employee in South Africa?

No, says Cindy Norcott, business coach, motivational speaker and author who also is the founder and CEO of specialist recruitment agency ProTalent.

Sibaya Community Casino and Sibaya Community Trust chairman Vivian donated R2.5 million for flood relief.

He donated R500 000 to the Gift of the Givers, whom he said were “on the ground working tirelessly and had full knowledge of the extent of the disaster and the areas most needing help”.

“With numerous schools damaged, R2 million was directed to the Premier’s Schools Project to help assist in rebuilding and renovations,” Reddy said.

The recent KZN floods have left a devastating effect on the province, rendering it the subject of the declaration of a National State of Disaster. He said there was a pressing need for the business sector entities to work together to assist the affected communities, as “our most vulnerable people have been victims with loss of their homes and lives”.

“The Sibaya Community Trust has always been at the forefront when it comes to social upliftment; they have a huge portfolio of projects undertaken to help over 120 charity organisations.

To date, we have contributed over R230 million to our communities from building of infrastructure to education to health and wellness and much more,” Reddy said.

He said over the years, many schools benefited from the trust in the form of new classrooms, ablution facilities, and general renovations.

“We are currently building a skills centre in the heart of the Blackburn community and have built a fully equipped soup kitchen for them to provide over 500 meals on a daily basis. As April is Autism Month, we are delighted to have just completed a skills centre for the Triad School of Autism.

“We are aware of reports from the midlands and coastal regions (north and south) which seem to be the worst affected, however, reports continue to come in. With the severe devastation of the infrastructure, and in particular roads and bridges around the port, the passage of goods and services is highly restricted. Access to relevant drop-off and collection points for agricultural products and supplies which are time-sensitive will impact directly on the sector,” said Kwanalu CEO, Sandy La Marque.

Serco’s CEO and President of the Durban Chapter of Entrepreneurs Organisation Clinton Holcroft said 2021 had been a tough year for business in KZN. “I believe the unrest took the wind out of our company’s sails, evident in that our usual end of year peak period failed to materialise. I attribute this to a large extent to the loss of business confidence and the extensive property damage which resulted in many businesses not being able to resume trading by the end of the year, if at all,” said Holcroft.

In 2018, the National Water and Sanitation Master Plan identified a water supply deficit of 17% by 2030 for the country, putting water efficiency under the spotlight at a time when parts of the country were feeling the pinch of prolonged drought conditions.

The Master Plan also targets developing a water efficiency labelling scheme for taps and fixtures by 2025 in line with international standards.

The South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and CLASP spearheaded the study by independent experts, which culminated in a report titled “In-depth Assessment of Water Efficiency Opportunities in South Africa” report. This report found that standards for taps and showerheads could address the country’s link to water and energy crises by reducing the use of water and electricity needed to heat some of that water. CLASP is an NGO that focuses on appliance and equipment energy performance and quality, to mitigate and adapt to climate change and expand access to clean energy.

How does a parent or an educator prepare the learners of today for the workplace of the future?

That is a big question without a clear answer, admits Business Head at the Swales Online Academy, Lauren Jacquin.

Already, according to education experts, the siloed or subject-based approach that is still very evident in our schools today does not fully prepare learners for the multi-faceted world of work. Instead, education needs to equip learners to find the commonalities between different subjects.

A tautliner is a generic name for a curtain-sided body that is used to carry a variety of different types of goods, which can be loaded or unloaded through the opening of the side curtain.

A key priority for these builds was to use a high wear coated birch ply flooring suitable for the loading of timber boards. A further enhancement was for these boards to be securely bonded to the steel underframe without the need for mechanical fasteners which tend to work loose over time causing water seepage and leading to possible damage to the floor and the load.

The coated birch floor also offers a weight reduction compared to a conventional steel deck.
