Darren Weale talks with Dawn from the Friends of Bromley Palace Park about how the Friends are progressing their great work of making the historic parkland in the centre of Bromley a valuable place for people, flora and fauna alike. Recorded in May at Bromley's Pedro Lounge, this is a reminder of just what good determined volunteers can achieve, even if the foxes, frogs, newts, tawny owls, random egg-laying ducks and resident heron Henry are unaware of the efforts made on their behalf. Dawn uses the words 'abundance of' twice to describe how well several species are doing, which is a delight for the volunteers and visitors to the park, young and old alike. Darren Weale speaks with Henry, Operations Manager at Hemsley Conservation Centre in Kent.

From the beautiful, rare Golden Conures which can be heard at the start of the episode, to Tayra, Lemurs, Maned Wolves and Jaguarundi (one of only 2 pairs in the UK), Hemsley Conservation Centre is a publicly-open refuge for many animal species that are rare both in the wild and even in zoos.

The Centre loves its animals, and their personality and attitude, providing a range of direct experiences with some of the species, such as lemurs, sloths, bugs, porcupines, and spider monkeys. It has options for visitors including a 'junior zookeeper' experience.

Hemsley Conservation Centre enables people to see and learn about rare animals, keeping the species alive, and educating people on how to preserve environments. There is a lot to be seen and understood when visiting the Centre. The Centre is also part of the Small Zoo Network.

Do enjoy the episode and Henry's animal stories and the quirks and habits that he shares. Better still, go to Hemsley Conservation Centre and see for yourself.

Darren Weale talks with Dave Griffiths of The Belldrinkers about their latest Christmas song, 'Cross Me Off Your Christmas List', newly released on You Tube and music streaming channels such as Spotify.

Created by Dave and Lester, with numerous others with Chelsfield links, most of all the Five Bells pub, the songs have become a highlight of the year and a bit of a Santa Dash to get completed in time for Christmas every year, as Dave explains.

The Belldrinkers can be found on channels including You Tube, Spotify, Apple Music, Facebook, and more.

Chester Zoo, Vulcan bombers, The Belldrinkers Philharmonic Chorus, and Truro Cathedral's organ all form part of this 'Ska revival with slightly mad sounding brass' and a singer, now aged 16, who was 5 when their first song was recorded 11 years ago.

Dave pays tribute on the podcast and in the video to a late Belldrinker, Paul Skinner, who sadly passed this year.

Darren Weale presents students from Newstead Wood School interviewing Jo Johnson, then Member of Parliament (MP) for Orpington, in 2018.

This interview was a debut podcast for the then Bromley Radio, which later closed down. Now there is a new Bromley Radio, which carries our shows. Several Prime Minsters after that 2018 interview, it can be shared again as an insight into the past, and into the value of politics and why people should vote and stand for elected office. You can find interviews with all of Bromley's current MP's in earlier episodes of the Bromley Buzz podcast. Our latest interview with Orpington's current MP, Gareth Bacon, is here.

Darren Weale interviews the actor Robert Daws, who appears in a new show, Wodehouse In Wonderland, which runs at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley between 9th and11th March. Tickets here.

Robert has acted in many, many roles, but clearly Wodehouse is dear to his heart, and as he says, he had a big hand in creating this show, which will go on to run in the US and India in future. This will be a return to the Churchill Theatre for Robert (where he was last seen, murdered (!), in an Agatha Christie play). Robert talks about the importance of Wodehouse as a writer and lyricist, how he came to read his humorous fiction for the first time, the joys of Blandings, Jeeves and Wooster, Mulliner, the Golf Stories, and more.

Robert shares aspects of the show itself and how it came about, playing Tuppy Glossop in TV's Jeeves and Wooster with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie (and why Tuppy ate so much!), and playing the trumpet in the last episode of Fry and Laurie.

Darren invites Robert to suggest how Jeeves and Wooster respectively would react to the show, and his response, towards the end of the interview, is well worth listening to by itself.

Zeenat Noorani and Darren Weale interview Ellie Reeves, Member of Parliament for Lewisham West and Penge, from the Bridge House Theatre in Penge.

The discussion covers numerous topics from Pengemas to the Penge Festival, the 'brilliant sense of community' in Penge, the local Foodbank, and Ellie's casework as an MP. She relates her journey to becoming an MP, which gives her 'never a dull moment', and her role as shadow Justice Minister. With that workload, it is hardly surprising that we talk about Ellie's work-life balance, and about her being a woman in parliament.

Darren Weale interviews the man behind London Calling and the street art phenomenon that is Penge, from one of the street art hubs there, the, now, visually stunning upper floors of the Blenheim Centre car park. He explains how this 'unconventional gallery' and London Calling came about and grew to being the biggest artistic endeavour of its kind in the UK. This particular installation (a side project!) is delivered with Clarion Housing Group and Hadley Housing Group.

Read more on London Calling's street art work in Penge and Anerley in 2021 here. It was good to learn that the local Penge people and the High Street Business Improvement District - who were holding an event in the streets below on the day we were there - are so helpful in this initiative. One of those local people who was passing chipped in a few helpful thoughts to the interview as well. Even more here - and the art on display has changed since. Open events like this are shared via the Penge Tourist Board's Facebook page.

Colonel Bob Stewart, DSO, is the Member of Parliament for Beckenham. He said to us, "Give a politician a platform and he just goes on." It was a pleasure to give Bob a platform, as he is a fascinating interviewee.

He talks about friendships across political boundaries and fellow Bromley MP Ellie Reeves, his in at the deep end introduction to political selection, helping people and intervening for them as an MP, middle class poverty, property ownership and the young, the care of the elderly, and the NHS.

Johannes Radebe is an iconic dancer who appeared on TV's The Graham Norton Show on the same day he was interviewed by Darren and Zeenat of the Bromley Buzz! Sir Bob Neill is the Member of Parliament for Bromley and Chislehurst. Appropriately as Sir Bob is a supporter of the Arts, Darren Weale and Sarah Marsh-Collings interview him at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley when the Churchill Singers are rehearsing nearby.

We talk about his life including his career as a barrister – “a tidied up version of Rumpole of the Bailey” – when he discovered that a famous crime was plotted in Chislehurst. Sir Bob talks about what an MP does, how he became one, and then becoming a Minister of State. He describes the value of MP’s, his joy and relief of being first elected, and then his first steps as a new MP, which was a “pretty frantic time… the first couple of years were absolutely manic”. We ask about his local and national work that has made him proud, his role in organising the 2012 Olympics, and about his priorities for the future. Sir Bob tells us what he loves about Bromley, and the importance to him personally of support services for people who have suffered a stroke. We also bring a moment or two of parliamentary banter to life from the Churchill Theatre.

'Start Up Bromley' is a selection of free services that has been helping people starting and growing businesses in Bromley. In our conversation with Martin Stone and Loretta Awuah, Martin confirms the service is to confirm beyond its initial March 2022 end. We talk about what is on offer at the three libraries involved - Bromley central, Biggin Hill, and Orpington - including workshops, a members directory, and the imminent 'March Madness' schedule including a conference, a business pitch competition with cash prizes, a video featuring participating businesses, and the already established coaching sessions. We go into how the service began, and its value to the libraries themselves.

Darren Weale interviews Councillor Aisha Cuthbert about Bromley's Tackling Loneliness Strategy.

Corrections from the audio - Aisha is Tackling Loneliness Champion, not Loneliness Champion, and the late MP involved in the initiative nationally was Jo Cox, not Jo Good.

Aisha explains her personal reasons for taking up this role, the importance of mental health, and talks about plans including Community Champions, a new directory, the Tackling Loneliness page, and the importance of Community Links Bromley. Bromley Well, Age UK Bromley and Greenwich, and the University of the Third Age (U3A) in Bromley are also discussed. As she says, though, "Loneliness is everybody's business."

In this episode of the Bromley Buzz podcast, Darren Weale interviews Omar, a Trustee of the Al-Emaan Centre, or Mosque, in Keston, from within the building. Omar explains the meaning of the name of the centre, talks about the call to prayer, and reflects on the history and design of the mosque.

A local doctor, Omar provides an insight into his own upbringing and how local Muslim people came together before the centre officially opened in 2016, as it approaches its 6th anniversary in 2022.

We take in other topics such as prophetic remedies, the sisters circle, socks, and the importance of cake in the life of the mosque, notably in the Bromley Three Faiths Group, and in Peace of Cake walks. Omar describes charity work undertaken with a community centre in Penge and with a local church in Hayes. He also talks about the outreach undertaken with local schools and scout groups, the covid vaccination clinic, and he invites listeners to email and visit the centre.

Zeenat Noorani and Darren Weale present the latest Buzz about Bromley. The show starts with the beautiful sounds of part of the Muslim call to prayer recorded live in Bromley - and the show ends with it played in full. That was recorded when we interviewed Trustee Omar from inside the Al-Emaan Centre, or Mosque, in Keston (the full interview to follow in a Special episode) and Norwegians Per Pedersen and Fredrik Bjernaes of the HITIO gym on the opening day of the HITIO gym in Orpington.

Along with plenty of other content, we preview another interview that will be published soon, one with Bromley's Tackling Loneliness Champion, Cllr Aisha Cuthbert, on the Council's Tackling Loneliness Strategy. We, typically, enthuse about local food and drink, and talk about the recent Rotary Youth Awards ceremony. We have a stab (!) at the solution to 'whodunnit' at the Cluedo show at Bromley's Churchill theatre coming soon, and celebrate local charity work and share the Bromley Little Theatre's upcoming eco-production of Wind in the Willows.

We mention the Mayor of Bromley appearing on the Mindset Matters show on 28th January, and The Joy of Being Selfish, for the second week running - but for different reasons....

From 5 year old athletes, to elite international athletes and Paralympians, Blackheath and Bromley Harriers athletics club is a crucible of talent in the heart of Bromley.

Bromley Buzz co-presenter Darren Weale interviews club President Nic Corry and Trustee Chris Hilditch trackside at the Norman Park athletics ground, on a sunny winters day. Nic talks about their new community centre, a project seven years in the making and due to open later in 2022, and that only after the site was scanned for unexploded wartime bombs.

Among the sporting highlights, the pole vault team earn a mention, along with anticipation for the Channel Islands match in April, and the history of the club, which was created in 1869 and has had its Bromley base now for 150 years. Many an athlete is talked about, from the wonderfully nicknamed Sydney 'The Mighty Atom' Wooderson, to Adam Gemili, Dina Asher-Smith, Daisy Snell, parathletes Hollie Arnold and Prince Reid, and veterans such as Helen Godsell and Ken Daniel.

Reference is made to young athletes including the Bees Academy for ages 5 to 11 years old, and their personal development and academic progress, and the great value to the club of its volunteers, and the Kent Young Athletes League - which brings 2,500 visitors to the track four times a year. Local schools and sports days at the ground are mentioned, as is race walking.

It is quite a special place, with a unique atmosphere. And here, as Nic said, "You can run on the same track as one of the fastest women in the world."

An exclusive Bromley Buzz interview by Darren Weale and Zeenat Noorani with dancer Kevin Clifton as he looks forward to performing in Burn the Floor at Bromley's Churchill Theatre on 6th February 2022.

Kevin explains why the show, which he co-produces and stars in, means so much to him since he first joined it in 2008, talking about the brilliant costumes and live band and "two hours of, for me, just the best ballroom and Latin dancing in the world with some of the most insane dancers who are constantly striving to push the boundaries as much as possible". He talks about growing up in a ballroom competition family, confidence, anxiety, the constraints of competition, pre-show changes, and his love of Paso.

We (unsurprisingly) ask Kevin about his time in Strictly Come Dancing, from his early days as assistant choreographer to joining the ranks of the show's professionals and finally winning with partner Stacey Dooley, with a little help from Peaky Blinders, what it is like teaching novice dancers for a TV show, and just who his favourite Strictly partner is. We find out how Kevin would fare on Dancing on Ice - here is a clue from Kevin's Instagram - and Kevin consults a book in which he'd just been writing lists of achievements by Burn the Floor dancers, talking about the fact that it has featured other Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing with the Stars professional dancers, such as Johannes Radebe, Janette Manrara, Aljaž Škorjanec, Artem Chigvintsev, Nancy Xu, and many more, a group who have clocked up 36 Glitter Balls between them - and his counting isn't completed! Kevin talks about plans for the future and Burn Nation's online dance classes.

A bitesize interview with the Mayoress of Bromley precedes a longer interview with Neil and Emily from the new Lift Each Other Studio in Orpington, which has an impressive range of equipment including a punchbag used 'live' during the interview, and a team of coaches, and the ambition that "...if everybody lifts everybody, eventually we will change the world." A final interview is with Jules Serkin of the Business Bunker show and podcast on Channel Radio (Tuesdays 1-3pm). We talk about the things that have made us buzz lately including resuming face to face networking, the prizes donated to the coffee morning, holidays, and family.

Zeenat provides her Affirmation of the Week which leads to recognition for several people who 'lift up' Zeenat and Darren, and What's On locally. We are spreading the love! Do listen in and share the Buzz.

In this lively episode Darren discovers a regrettable penchant for using the words 'head honcho', Sarah talks mad scientists, and the Reverend Andy Coyne of the Temple United Reform Church in St Mary Cray offers a Thought for the Day, Singing, eyelash talk and spaniels and parks and ice cream vans precede a lovely interview with Keith and Alice of the Bromley Little Theatre (from the dressing room) which shows what an inspiring place at the heart of the community the theatre has. We touch on Bromley's agricultural and equine dimension and the Jack Frost Pet & Country store. We talk about just why it is that we love Bromley (yes, we do), Zeenat provides her Affirmation of the Week, and reflect on impressive deadlifting, and What's On locally. We loved visiting Bromley Little Theatre so much that we have made it our first special, single topic episode of the Bromley Buzz podcast. Listen as Zeenat Noorani and Darren Weale talk from a dressing room full of costumes, hair products and theatrical paraphenalia with Alice Foster and Keith Jeremiah about the 80-year plus history of the theatre, its importance to the community and about future plans and productions. Actor Alice reads a little from the script of the current production, and we touch upon topics such as the theatres work with local schools and CASPA, the friendships and positive mental health impact of the theatre, and the sheer love it inspires.  Do go and see the shows, and if you can, support the theatre in other ways via donations and advertising. We are spreading the love! Do listen in and share the Buzz.
