In this episode Chris explores the ideas of the ancient Greek, Neoplatonic philosopher--Iamblichus--through his correspondence with an ancient Egyptian priest. Iamblichus does something no philosopher did before him, at least not to such a degree; he questioned religious orthodoxy, expressed skepticism about the legitimacy of religious ritual and sacrifice and even of the priesthood itself. Along the way, however, he's striving to understand the nature of the divine at the deepest level. It turns out, there was no better source for answers to religious questions than the Egyptian priesthood, who benefited from the oldest and grandest religious tradition in all of the ancient world. And what did Iamblichus learn? It's not at all what you'd expect.

In this episode Chris engages with the ideas of author--Brian Cranely, in his book The Call of Wonder. He discusses the importance of the human experience of wonder and awe as a catalyst for opening one's mind to realities greater than oneself. He then moves to the Western philosophical tradition to trace how we have wrestled with the idea of 'greater realities,' leading to Plato's idea of forms and eventually to the realm of spirit as formulated in our religious traditions. Next, we trace the pedigree of the idea of God with a capital 'G,' beginning with Plato's idea of the Form of the Good in distinction to the gods of Olympus. From there we arrive at Aristotle's First Cause and start to pin down the qualities that such a thing must necessarily have--Unity, Eternity and Unknowability. From this basic pattern we arrive at the religious idea of the Image of God and describe how it is reflected in cosmology, biology and consciousness.

In this episode Kyle and Chris reflect on the tragic death of Charlie Kirk. We discuss the state of discourse in the United States, the prevalence of debate over discussion and the slow progress of leftist totalitarianism and identity politics. We ask the question: How do we diagnose the cause of this new stream of anti-Western political violence? And after we're done licking our wounds, we ask: What can be done and what should be done to remove this cancer from our social body. We agree on one thing...that justice delivered to Charlie's killer is insufficient to prevent such things from recurring. More must be done. The public has expectations here from our leaders. Let's just hope they rise to the occasion.

In this episode Chris interviews author Brian Cranely about his new book 'The Call of Wonder'. Brian studied biomedical engineering and built a career in the field before heeding the call of wonder, which put is professional career on hold in favor of divinity school where we received his graduate degree along with a heaping helping of philosophy! Brian's unique background, weighted equally in the domains of science and religion, inspired the message which became 'The Call of Wonder.' We discuss the key discoveries of ancient Greek philosophy, which , through logic and reason alone, brought such figures as Plato and Aristotle right to the precipice of monotheistic revelation. This episode revolves around "Resentment" as a human motivation. We begin with a discussion of a debate conducted by two AI's on the topic of Capitalism vs Socialism and remark on how whinny, nit-picky and generally ungrateful the Socialist bot's arguments were. From here we move into the topic of racial violence in South Africa, apartheid and the history of Rhodesia. Here we again find ourselves discussing resentment as it pertains to social unrest and human tribalism. Next we tackle grandiose ideas, which have played out in human history such as: Manifest Destiny, the Divine Right of Kings and the Right of Conquest. And, as you probably guessed, we can't discuss the Right of Conquest without a detour into the Gaza-Israel conflict and the resentment that so often comes with Imperialism and Colonialism. And finally, we wrap with a commentary on freedom of speech, whether speech can be violence (or incite it) and the special status given to the so-called N-word.

In this episode Kyle and Chris reunite after several weeks off. They discuss Chris' family vacation to the frontier lands of West Texas and his friggin' sweet cowboy hat. They then turn to their latest YouTube rabbit-holes including what Chris calls his 'ASMR,' which turns out to be time-lapse videos of landscaping and antique restoration. What's more satisfying than a good 'before-and-after' photo? A few words on seeing Kevin Nealon doing stand-up and Chris' friend's terrarium project, which is a miniature Tolkien forest complete with hobbit-hole, etc. Then we arrive in more somber territory, discussing the decline of race relations in the U.S. and the increasing violent and resentful rhetoric that seems to rampant these days. A few examples from the news courtesy of Governor Pritzker of Illinois and a lowly high school teacher, bring us home.

In this episode Chris brings us Opinion Scholarship on the Creation myths of ancient Greece. We begin with an exploration of so-called "Old Europe" and a cavalcade of archeological evidence of the Great Mother Goddess religion that prevailed in the Stone Age. From there we follow Author--Robert Graves--as he reconstructs from ancient sources the oldest Creation myths of Greece; following the symbolic breadcrumbs which connect Zeus and the Olympians with the Great Mother Goddess who came before them. This takes us from Homer and the Orphics to the Bible, into Zoroastrianism and Ancient Egyptian myth, then we trip over Homer, Hesiod and Apollodorus and fall squarely into the Aryan migration theory (which we navigate tactfully). And before all is said and done, we pepper in a dash of depth psychology.

We discuss Kaczynski's opinion about the nature of freedom and how it's preservation is inconsistent with the endless advancement of technology. What will it be, Modern Man? An apocalypse Terminator-style, a voluntary species-wide self-sacrifice...or perhaps something else. Can the advance of technology provide an alternative? Might our enslaver become our savior? Or, might there be a place for two versions of society to exist alongside each other? Could Brave New World have provided the blueprint? Advanced technological utopia on one side, and "primitive" reservations on the other?

In this episode Chris brings us Opinion Scholarship, this time surrounding Christianity. We read through the gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, John and Thomas, searching for the teachings of Jesus. Here we find references to the 'gospel of the kingdom of God,' but without any clear description of what that means. So we seek, as Jesus suggested, until we find. And what did we find? A whole host of images and ideas surrounding the symbol of the 'Kingdom of God.' We put those images together like the pieces to a mystical puzzle and voila! We find the Kingdom of Heaven just might be an allegory of unity with the divine.

In this episode Chris delivers Opinion Scholarship on the idea of Nothingness and the Zero-Energy Universe Hypothesis in modern physics. He compares these ideas and their implications to humanity's oldest myths about the creation of the cosmos...and finds some striking parallels! In our myths we find a primordial mystery existing before existence from which 2 equal and opposing deities are formed. In physics we find the mystery of the quantum vacuum from which 2 equal and opposing particles are formed. In the case of myth, God created Ex Nihilo--from nothing. In the case of the Zero-Energy Universe, the whole of the cosmos was created Ex Nihilo--from a state of zero energy!

We discuss the Proto-Indo-European people, their culture and religion and how they came down through the Indo-Iranian tribes that became both Zoroastrianism in Iran and Hinduism in India. We discuss the influence Zoroastrian ideas had on both Judaism and Christianity and explore what Zoroaster meant when he claimed to be restoring monotheistic purity to their ancient, Indo-European faith. This brings us to the Christian idea of the Logos, which compare and contrast to the Zoroastrian idea of Vohu Mana.

In this episode Chris delivers Opinion Scholarship on the meaning of Plato's famous Cave Allegory. He shows through the words of Plato and the ancient Greek Poet Pindar that the secret goings-on of the Eleusinian Mysteries share a hell of a lot with the experience of the prisoner freed from Plato's cave. He then posits that the secrecy surrounding the Mysteries kept Plato from speaking about it directly, leading to the parables and allegories sprinkled throughout his dialogues. And to conclude, he samples accounts from the ancient world all the way through to the modern one of other people who had a mystical experience paralleling the one outlined by the Cave Allegory. In this episode Chris is brining you Opinion Scholarship on the myth of the Great Flood. While it's widely known that the deluge story appears all over the world, from every continent, very few people ever read the original sources to see just how similar they are. Today, I have remedied that! We read through the flood account from Ovid's Metamorphosis, compare the Indian account of the Flood of Manu, explore the Greek version through Apollodorus and Lucian and finally compare the Biblical version to the most ancient account in the Babylonian Tablets of Creation. When all is done, we recognize the common skeleton underlying each myth, but we also find some unexpected parallels. We talk Giants, vengeful gods and the motif of death and resurrection!

In this episode Kyle and Chris discuss The Crucible debate between Paleo-Conservative Andrew Wilson and Libertarian Dave Smith. We highlight the key arguments they tackle surrounding the meaning of "ownership," the application of the "non-aggression principle" and just how closely aligned Libertarian's are to Leftists. We suggest some alternate paths the debate might have taken, under different circumstances. Chris asks how different Jesus' instruction to "do unto others as you'd have them do unto you" is from the Libertarian ethos that "everything is permitted, so long as it doesn't harm someone else." Kyle fires back by asking how different "everything is permitted" is from the Satanist dictum "Do what thou wilt."

In this episode Chris discusses an episode of the YouTube channel "Mr. Mythos" entitled "Evidence YHWH was a Dragon." We examine the prominent role dragons hold in world mythology and explore evidence in the Bible that describes God as a dragon. We then expand on Mr. Mythos' work to incorporate Jordan Peterson's discussion of the Babylonian "dragon of chaos"--the primordial goddess Tiamat--and it's relation to the Hebrew word Tehom in the book of Genesis. Witzel uses a historical approach to comparative religion, aided by the latest in linguistic, archeological and DNA evidence to trace the myths of the world back to two distinct groups, an older one he calls Gondwana and a later one called Laurasian. Through this process he traces our myths back some 40,000 years and beyond, constructing a "family tree" of world myths and reconstructing their original form. What he finds is, not just common motifs and characters, but a single unifying story-line--a mythic history--which ties together the myths and religions of our ancient past.

In this episode we examine a myth from the Basque people of Spain and France. Why? Because I love stories, but also because the Basque people are unique among the ethnicities, cultures and languages of Europe. They do not descend from the Indo-European migration, which so heavily influenced the rest of Europe and do not speak an Indo-European language. That said, their myths give us incredible insight into the development of spirituality in Europe and into those primordial ideas, which rest at the foundation of the human psyche.
The myth discussed comes from the folklorist Mariana Monteiro's 1887 book Legends and Popular Tales of the Basque People. It explains the origin of a sacred mountain called--Aquelarre--which sits alone like a leper, isolated from the rest of the mountain chain. Why is it estranged so? What makes it sacred? In this episode Chris presents Opinion Scholarship on an influential book by a Christian Orthodox Father--Seraphim Rose--titled Orthodoxy and the Religion of the Future. This exploration was sparked by Kyle's interest in Eastern Orthodox Christianity and on the recommendation of an Orthodox friend of the show--Jason Mironchuck--of the 2Bit Podcast. I suspected this book was going to argue that Orthodox Christianity is poised to be the "religion of the future," but instead found Father Rose warning of the rise of an ecumenical, multi-faith, hybrid religion of anti-Christ. He warns against inter-faith dialog and the adoption of pagan ideas and practices into Christianity. He warns the seekers of spiritual experiences against seeking them outside of the Church of Christ. And most especially, he warns against the dilution and corruption of the tradition of the Christian church, which he believes risks the souls of the faithful as well as the rest of us.

In this episode Chris brings you Opinion Scholarship on a Hindu holy book called the Ashtavakra Gita, which expounds the non-dual philosophy of the Upanishads and Advaita Vedanta. This text is profound and poetic, but as good as it is in describing the nature of God, it fails in other ways to account for the realities of the world and our place in it. One part alternative history, one part social commentary, we kick off season 4 with an exploration of Asha Logos' YouTube channel entitled "Our Subverted History." This one is where common sense intersects with political correctness. We discuss Indo-European as a historical ethnic and linguistic family and how it's been maligned by modern notions of "whiteness." He discusses the strange idea of two distinct races of gods that come into conflict with one another. The ancient Greeks have the Titans and Olympians, the Bible has it's Angels and Demons, Zoroastrianism has Ahura Mazda and Ahriman and the Hindu's have the Devas and Asuras. The one left out of this list, comes from the Scandinavian north, from the Norse--the Aesir and Vanir--and this makes up the meat of the discussion. We examine the 21st century ethnographer--Thor Heyerdahl--and his theory surrounding the origin of the Norse in Azerbaijan, Odin as a historical person and the "war of the gods" as a battle between waring tribes.

In this episode Chris discusses a nightmare that the psychologist Jordan Peterson's nephew shared with him. It was a typical childhood nightmare full of fear and frightening imagery, but it held a deeper meaning. Jordan describes the psychological meaning and symbolism of the dream and how he empowered his nephew to overcome his fear. I tell this story in order to tell another. My 6-year-old daughter told me a story about "fairies," which struck me with the same kind of psychological and philosophical force. It makes me ask the question, what is the Unconscious? And, is there something more to our dreams and fantasies than random, meaningless ideas and images?

He poses the questions that beg for an answer and highlights where Whitehead fails to be clear. Just what the hell is an "Actual Entity"...or an "Eternal Object" for that matter? Whitehead tells us that experience arises from "primary data" and that "a thing" mediates between Potentiality and Actuality. He then waits pages and pages to clarify, with mixed success. In this episode Chris attempts a psychological interpretation of the symbols in the great painting by Salvador Dali entitled: Geopoliticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man. This was an exercise in the same type of free-association the depth psychologists like Freud and Jung engaged in. In it Chris tries to understanding what meaning is and where it comes from. He begins and ends with the same overarching question: Can there be valid meaning interpreted in symbols/art beyond what the artist intended? If so, what does this say about meaning in general?

In this episode we begin our exploration of Alfred North Whitehead's magnum opus "Process and Reality." This one serves as an introduction to the novel conceptualization of God and conscious experience that Whitehead introduced to the philosophic world, with emphasis on his speculative technique in generating a new model of reality. Whitehead defends imagination as a valid faculty to exploring the world and achieving knowledge. He also envisions reality as a "Process" generated by interaction between and within the One substance that makes up the cosmos.

In this episode we explore the ancient Greek fables of Aesop. I hoped to find psychologically significant parallels to myths and fairytales, but I found something entirely unexpected. In Aesop we find parallels to the Bible, we find the origins of many common expressions still in use today, but more than that, we get a glimpse into the social and cultural life of ordinary Ancient Greeks. He get to see what they valued, what they criticized and all their prejudices laid bare. Surprising. Entertaining.

This episode concludes our discussion of Rudolf Steiner's--How to Know Higher Worlds. We explore more practical instructions for how to train in the "occult sciences," which surround increasing our capacity for empathy and systematically tearing down the psychological boundaries of identity...between yourself and others, between subject and object, between God and its creation. The ultimate goal of this striving took me by surprise. Steiner is not teaching ritual magic, he doesn't point to gods or demons, but rather points to the God-within. Steiner lays out a pattern of behavior and thinking that leads inevitably to an ego death and mystical enlightenment. It is endogenous. Lying in wait for each of us to become ready for its manifestation.

In this episode we introduce the early 20th century philosopher and occultist--Rudolf Steiner. We explore his book "How to Know Higher Worlds" and compare and contrast his methods with those of Carl Jung. Steiner and Jung were contemporaries of each other and, while they likely never encountered each other, came to eerily similar conclusions from wildly different perspectives. In this episode we return to Jung's mystical "Red Book" and recount 2 of his "visions." We meet (and kill) a destitute man and then chat with a monk in the desert. Through these experiences Jung comes to realize he exists as two worlds--one conscious, the other unconscious, one individual, the other collective, one as being, the other becoming. He can no longer hold on to the one-sided image of himself and of God that we wants to. He can no longer think of them as all good or as only its highest manifestation...he must complete the picture, embrace the whole and recognize that he is a "piece of the darkness" too.

In this episode we explore the 18th century scientist and mystic--Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg led an interesting life as a respected philosopher and scientist before changing to theological themes in his later life. This change was attributed to a mystical experience, wherein, Swedenborg claimed, he was given the ability to live simultaneously in the Natural and Spiritual worlds. Swedenborg speaks to angels, travels to heaven and is taught the mysteries of God and being. His mystic vision parallels that of Sir Humphry Davy who was born only 6 years after Swedenborg's death. Both men saw the spiritual "heaven" and the "angels" in the material expanse of space and in the stars and planets.

In this episode we enter the second half of Carl Jung's Red Book. And it does not disappoint. The first image Jung encounters here is "The Red One," who he strongly suspects is the Devil himself. His interaction with The Red One lead to an interesting examination of completeness. Jung suggests that there is something critical missing from the Pagan path that Christianity offers and something missing from the Christian path that Paganism offers. The solution is to join them to find completeness. To integrate them, just as we integrate the unconscious in ourselves. But this is not without its dangers...

This episode picks up where we left off with Louis von Franz. We jump head first into fairytales from Siberia, Germany and indigenous America. We see snakes crawling out of king's mouths while they're sleeping and the homes of long dead relatives beneath a brook in the forest. We encounter holes and wells and the end of the world...all of which reveal themselves to be portals from this world into the Unconscious world. In this episode we follow Erich Neumann from the primordial symbol of the self-created Uroboros to the primeval Great Mother. This journey is a perilous one! Consciousness has to find a way to tear itself free of the place of its birth--The Great Mother. But once it's succeeded, it finds itself at the mercy of fate and fear. The "Self," once achieved, finds itself in the Unknown...submerged, struggling and terrified. Neumann then shows us this same story, our story, through the minds and times of bygone peoples. In deepest antiquity as in the modern day, we acknowledge the Great Mother as Mother Earth, as the Universe, as the Goddess of life and death. We imagine her holding her new born son, like Horus, Marduk or the Christ child. She is the cosmos swaddling the new God. She is comfort and sustenance and peace...and yet we must wean! We suffer, yes, but wean we must in order to be.
This episode concludes the first part--Liber Primus--of Jung's Red Book. Shit is getting thick, as Jung encounters the force of consciousness in the form of the Prophet Elijah and the force of unconsciousness in the form of Salome. We descend together into the underworld over and over and see many wild and strange things. We shrink to miniscule size Alice in Wonderland style; we see images of the future come to fruition in the Second World War and the image of God as a child gestating in each and every one of us. Together we become One, Christ and the new God born from the corpse of the old.
