Curious what it actually takes to change hearts and minds when advocating for the CAA profession? Turns out, advocacy is a skill like anything else in this field, and it starts with the right mental model. Whether you're a practicing CAA facing pushback in the OR, an AA student finding your voice online, or a pre-AA just starting to understand our profession's fight for recognition, this episode gives you a framework you can actually use.

In this episode I sit down with Adrienne Evans, SLP-turned-Pre-AA and co-host of the Pre-AA Pathways Podcast, to break down her original V.O.I.C.E. Framework for advocacy.

In this episode we discuss:

  • The V.O.I.C.E. Framework: Validate, Own, Identify, Cite, End with inclusion
  • How to respond to misinformation and disinformation about the CAA profession without escalating
  • Why validation is a form of psychological grounding that lowers defensiveness in hard conversations
  • How to identify the root cause of a misconception before you try to correct it
  • Applying the framework in both online comment sections and in-person conversations
  • Why most advocacy conversations won't change a mind on the spot — and how repetition and small efforts build relationships and long-term change

This new take on the PROCESS series is at the core of what I love to share, the messy middle. What if you could witness the making of a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant in real time, not as a polished highlight reel, but as it is actually unfolding? In all things, I care far less about the end result and far more about who you are in the becoming.

This Pre-AA to CAA PROCESS series follows Britton Robinson as her journey unfolds from 2024 through 2028, an ongoing conversation that captures the growth, the pivots, the waiting, and the wins along the way. It is about honoring growth as it happens and having the courage to tell your story before you know how it will end. This is the Pre-AA to CAA [PROCESS] of Britton Robinson.

The 2026 AAAA* President had a marketing undergrad degree, years in hospitality as a bartender, one EMT night class, and a long stretch of prerequisites. This might not sound like the “perfect” route into the CAA profession, but it can be the exact training ground to build a great CAA and an even better leader. We recorded this LIVE Season 5 Finale on April 10th, 2026 from the AAAA National Conference main stage (my podcasting dream come true). It also ended up being one of my favorite conversations, not only because Emily openly discusses her imposter syndrome and test anxiety, but because it will make your big dreams feel possible again.

In this much anticipated episode, I finally open up about my lifetime battle with OCD. How its devastation shifted from childhood "just right" rituals to religious and sexuality obsessions to relationship OCD, and how naming it led to therapy, medication, and a gentler way to live. What if the most powerful tool you carry into patient care isn’t a device or a protocol, but the way your brain has been trained to pay attention? ***@ 14:42 my podcast software thinks "voo-ing is a "removable background noise" so this episode may be best experienced on YouTube

Have you ever searched for wellness resources that truly understand what it means to be a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant? You're not alone. Wellness Wednesday are candid conversations about the unique challenges and opportunities facing CAAs in their pursuit of sustainable wellbeing.

In this episode I relate how OR life can jack your nervous system into overdrive... constant alarms, literal hammering, a sudden “patient’s moving", and yet our role as a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant demands we have steady hands and a clear head. I unpack three discreet, science-backed techniques you can use behind the drape to quiet the buzz without calling attention to yourself. Think long, quiet exhales that nudge your vagus nerve, a quick dose of tension-then-release to steady your hands, and a soft “voo” on the breath that taps the laryngeal branches of the vagus for an extra parasympathetic boost.

Whether you're a practicing CAA, AA student, or prospective applicant, this episode marks the beginning of a community-centered approach to wellness that finally names and validates your experience. Welcome in.

FYI "To "regulate" means to monitor and adjust one’s internal state—such as emotions, thoughts, or physiological responses—in order to maintain balance and support adaptive behavior." so says ChatGpt

Have you ever searched for wellness resources that truly understand what it means to be a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant? You're not alone. Wellness Wednesday are candid conversations about the unique challenges and opportunities facing CAAs in their pursuit of sustainable wellbeing.

In this episode, we discuss the quiet tug-of-war between boundless ambition and a life that actually feels good (especially for high-achieving CAAs, SAAs, and pre-AAs trained to do more, faster, and better). We unpack the core idea, “you can do anything, but you can’t do everything”, and sit with the grief inside it. Every 'yes' creates a cascade of invisible no’s, and pretending that doesn’t hurt keeps us stuck. Naming seasons changes the game.

Whether you're a practicing CAA, AA student, or prospective applicant, this episode marks the beginning of a community-centered approach to wellness that finally names and validates your experience. Welcome in.

Join me for a 10-minute meditation, designed to fit into your busy day whether you're on a work break or commuting, learn how to embrace your natural source of resilience.

Meditation begins around 4:33

This isn't just about managing stress; it's about nurturing an inner resilience that's often overlooked. By allowing positive qualities to infiltrate our thoughts and emotions, we reinforce the strength within us, reminding ourselves that resilience is cultivated, not inherited. Take this time to pause and reset, and let this practice be your much-needed break.

This is an update to Stephanie Zunini's original PROCESS episode 35 released September 1st, 2023. We catch up with Stephanie more than a year later to discuss the arduous process required to actually practice in a new state after passing a CAA licensure bill. Stephanie's experience in Nevada highlights the emotional and physical toll of this long, slow legislative process. She shares the behind the scenes of why she made the incredibly hard decision to leave her thriving career in Denver to move to a less than perfect set-up in Nevada. With her eyes set on working in Reno, Stephanie's journey is a powerful reminder of the influence one person can have on an entire profession. My hope is that Stephanie's story inspires others to be change makers in their own states.

Nevada bill AB 270 was signed into law on June 9th, 2023 thereby giving CAAs legal status to practice anesthesia in the state of Nevada. Learn more about the CAA legislative process by watching other CAA legislative testimonials and listen to episodes 35, 36, 56.

Hello from my summer break! I am in the midst of a mindfulness teacher training through Dharma Moon and Tibet House and was challenged by my 1:1 teacher to lead a group practice on the pod. Unfortunately, I realized (after edits) that I forgot to tell you what to do with your eyes! For this practice you want to keep your eyes open, and softly gazing down. If you have never tried a mindfulness practice with eyes open (like me up until 4 weeks ago), I want to validate that it can be uncomfortable but also worth the effort. The goal is to narrow the gap between your meditating life and your regular life with eyes open.

I hope you enjoy this episode and find it helpful to learn about mindfulness from a fellow practicing CAA. Mindfulness has saved me in so many ways and has brought so many good things into my life. I can't wait to share more!

As a CAA I know you have faced many make or break moments. But, how did you make it through? When I reflect on my near 2 decades as a CAA and all the challenges I have overcome, I can see a framework develop as my "pre-game" ritual if you will. Of course your hard thing is not always about professional challenges- weddings, babies, coming out journeys, first days, last days, and everything in between. CAAs are uniquely pursuing their best lived lives and that generally means we are leaning into discomfort and out of the status quo. As I near my next big thing (speaking at the AAAA 2024) I am reflecting on the routines and mindset shifts that have supported me through all the BIG moments of my adulthood. In my 4-part framework I discuss my unique mindset around preparation, the finesse of practice, my "trust and letting go" phase, and the power of my confidence boosting ritual. While this framework doesn't guarantee the exact outcome I desire it always allows me to do my best and I hope it does the same for you!

Kelsey Koehler, CAA bravely shares the darker moments of her life, including a personal struggle with alcohol that led to 2 DUIs a week apart. Her story is a beacon for CAAs, illuminating the stark reality of substance misuse in our community. Her proactive approach to recovery and commitment to transparency with the Missouri state medical board and her own support circle exemplify the profound strength it takes to rebuild a life.

In our candid discussion, we move beyond Kelsey's individual story to address mental health in healthcare, unraveling the critical need for empathy and connection among CAA colleagues. This episode stands as an invitation to the medical community, especially our fellow CAAs, to embrace vulnerability, foster a culture of openness, and extend a hand to those silently battling personal demons. Kelsey's story will resonate deeply with anyone who has ever faced—or could face—the daunting intersection of personal hardship and professional responsibility. She currently sits on the AA admissions committee for South University (Savannah campus) where she helps hand select each incoming student. She shares her expertise about the AA school admissions process and so much more on her new website AspiringCAA.com. I highly recommend her website if you are interested in learning more about the CAA profession. Now go do something nice for yourself this week!

One of the main themes of my adult life has been learning to release my strangle hold on what I am "meant to do" when it is clear the thing is not meant for me right now. In summary- learning to have some trust and patience! My still small voice (aka my intuition) has been repeating the same message over and over again for years-"nothing meant for you will pass you by." In 2024 I am taking the aligned action to listen to that voice more clearly. This episode is also an invitation to you. An invitation to embark on your own self-discovery, growth, and manifestation journey. What's waiting for you just on the other side?

If you are a CAA or AA student you likely already know this amount of money is common as a full- time CAA. And, if you knew about the profession while in undergrad or earlier it is also likely that you know starting your CAA career in your mid 20s is totally possible. Our profession's ability to make 6 figures this early without going to medical school has always been our "wow" factor, for better or for worse. In this episode you will hear the behind the scenes of one CAA's television debut and how she is using this exact hook to create a wider understanding of what it means to be a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant.

My road to self-discovery was laid over many years, and spoiler alert* the work is on going. But I can identify 3 pivotal moments in my journey that created a profound shift towards a deep sense of knowing who I am and what I am meant to be in this world. In this 3 part series I recount how a shift in my mindset gave me the permission to appreciate the privileges in my life while also wanting more; how the birth of my gratitude practice reoriented my brain towards the present moment and how a brave step into therapy challenged and healed my limiting beliefs.

As a CAA, I know how important it is to share the messy middle- the why and the how- as well as the end result. That is how we learn in the OR and in life. After listening I hope you feel a sense of empowerment that you too can discover the life uniquely meant for you, whatever that may be.

In 2021 Lindsey Diaz was the first CAA to join a large private practice in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Even before she set foot in the operating room she was fighting false narratives and stigma about CAAs but she made it her mission to prove her worth and win over her CRNA colleagues and staff. Then, just months after her job started, in Lindsey’s words, she “accidentally” became president of New Mexico Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants during one of the CAA profession's biggest legislative battles of the decade. Lindsey led the NMAAA to pass Senate Bill 35 securing CAA practice throughout the state of New Mexico and securing her future in the state. Lindsey shares a vulnerable front row seat to how it really feels when you stand up in a room full of people who are rooting against you and fight back.

Mindfulness is for everyone, yes, even CAAs. Though, it can be helpful to see mindfulness as a muscle that needs to be strengthened with practice. The body scan is a very common mindfulness practice, especially in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). This short body scan was created with a beginner in mind. It can be daunting to start yet another "thing" so think of this simply as something you are exploring. No perfection required.

I hope this short mindfulness episode leaves you feeling nourished, encouraged and connected to yourself and our community. You deserve to feel good behind the drape.

In memory of Caleb Hopkins, CAA.Maggie Munn, CAA is a clinician, educator and mom. Her process episode will expand any CAA who is navigating their own career shift after becoming a parent, any anesthetists who are trying to design their own interpretation of work/life balance, and any CAA student who hopes to one day become an educator.

Jason Franco is the chief CAA at his hospital in Vero Beach, FL. Jason’s process episode will be super expansive to any CAAs who may one day open a new practice location, any CAAs who feel passionately about mentoring or teaching students, and any anesthetists who are struggling to prevent their limiting beliefs and past failures from impeding their future potential. Jason shares candidly about how he moved forward after his first and second failed interview attempts into CAA school, which I found incredibly vulnerable.

Part 2 of this first ever process episode was recorded in December of 2021. I openly shared my journey from giving anesthesia full time to part time. Because we are a close knit community of CAAs, students and other anesthesia providers, I feel safe speaking candidly about the money, what quitting really looks like and my 3 key takeaways. I hope this is helpful and expansive to any CAA out there who wants to make a big change in their career but needs some encouragement to do so.

This common humanity mindfulness practice will help you connect to the truth that you are not alone in your pursuit of CAA school and training.  I hope this episode speaks directly to CAA students and reminds them that someone else, right now, is feeling exactly as they are. We can rest assured that someone else "gets it" and will be there to support us if we reach out and seek connection.

If you want to skip straight to the mindfulness practice it begins at 7:36

[This episode supports the work I do as an adjunct professor for the University of Missouri-Kansas City Master of Science in Anesthesia program where I teach a 5-part course titled "Understanding Substance Use Disorder in Our Profession".]

In this episode I briefly share what I am up to at the moment and then I break down deep listening and its ability to create connection. Deep listening is a skill that can be developed and used to strengthen our profession as a whole and our connections on an individual level.

Deep Listening has 3 components.
1. Hold Space
2. Hold Still
3. Hold Up

As CAAs we are highly susceptible to the risks and triggers of substance use disorder. In my 5 part in-person course I teach my anesthesia students how connection is the opposite of addiction. This whole body breathing practice will help you connect to your own body as a whole. Connecting  and further accepting our whole true selves is step 1 in the prevention of substance use in our profession. I hope this episode brings a somewhat abstract concept into focus and gives you clarity on how finding connection within yourself is possible.

My hope is that this episode provides a little relief and recognition for you as anesthesia students. When anesthesia school feels relentless and stressful remember that your worth does not rest on your next successful intubation. You are much more than your achievements. If you are new to a mindfulness practice this episode will be a new voice, a voice that hopefully sounds more like yours. Mindfulness is for everyone, and that means you too.

I-statements are the most effective way to start a hard conversation. I-statements give you a formula to talk about suspicious or concerning behavior with a colleague without causing them to become defensive or angry. In this episode we learn the three components of an I-statement and how to craft the ideal empathetic conversation starter. This episode gives you the tools and guidance you need to step up and say something if you see a colleague struggling. We must start to care and keep caring about each other if we hope to prevent another one of us succumbing to the disease of addiction.

Welcome to the first episode of The Awakened Anesthetist. This episode was recorded months ago and has been tugging at me to be put out into the world. I originally aired this episode on the podcast I host with my husband, Growth Minded Marriage in the summer of 2021.  Now that it has a permanent home here I am anxious to start finding a community of other Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants who are also creating a life by design rather than default. I'm so happy you found me. Let's see what we can do, together.
