It's was a pleasure talking with Vincent Pugliese this week. We share a lot of the same values and ideas about what makes a remarkable life. If you're thinking of becoming an entrepreneur or you've always wanted to start a business but you aren't sure how to get started or if it's possible, this is a great episode to listen in on.

Vincent is the founder of the Total Life Freedom Community. Living a life of freedom is of huge importance to Vincent and his wife Elizabeth. They homeschool their three boys, and believe that having control of your time, your money, and the work you do, leads to the ultimate life freedom.

Vincent has generously offered to give away free access to the audio version of his new audio book, The Wealth of Connection. You can access that here:

Sometimes we get caught so caught up in the daily grind that we forget to take the time to take a valuable look at the journey we've been on and how far we've come. If you haven't done this is in a while, make sure you do. The clarity, perspective and gratitude it will bring you is invaluable. Listen to how 7 days cutting down trees on the Thruway was the perfect way to clear my head and prepare for what's next.

I'm excited to interview one of my dear friends this week. Chris Niemeyer has been married to his wife for 21 years, he's a father of four and has a successful Real Estate business. Chris was the valedictorian of his high school and was forced to leave the stage before his speech by his principal because they wouldn't allow him to speak about his faith. You won't believe what happened. He is no stranger to difficult transitions in life and career. After building a thriving travel agency over a 14 year period, he suddenly lost over 95% of his business during Covid. The real estate business he runs today is nothing short of impressive.  Today's conversation is filled with wisdom and inspiration that will spur you on in life and business. This week I welcome my friend Greg Gray to the show. He's a seasoned Executive Leadership & Business Coach, Author, Podcast Host and Founder of Gray University. He shares experience based wisdom from the trenches of life and business.

He also shares his journey transitioning from 20+ years in the corporate world to a full time coach and business consultant.

He shares practical ways a leader can uncover blindspots and become a better leader immediately.

I asked him a tough question on how to craft a clear vision when you're not sure what you want and what God wants and how those two things intersect. His wise perspective helped me find more clarity on how to move forward and I know it will help you too.

We also talked about what it means to experience true freedom in your life and work. The conversation was dynamite.

  • Creator of Rock Retirement Club, an online community providing education, tools, and support for building an amazing retirement

Growing up, my mother was always worried about the future.

She lived her life saving more, sacrificing more, and settling for less —all with the hope that one day she would have the financial and time freedom to spend it all on the family and activities she loved.

Mom passed away at the age of 48.

It's tragic, and not just because my mom was an amazing human (she was). It's sad because I see this kind of thing happen a lot. How many of us will spend most of our present saving for a future we never get to have?

The answer will always be too many. And I've dedicated my entire career to helping people shift what's possible in retirement by changing how they live, work, and celebrate what's possible right now—and keep doing it.

My first guest is one of my favorite people in the world, my father. He's had such a profound impact on my life and I'm grateful for the wisdom he shared. He recently retired after 43 years as an educator. He talks about life after retirement and while often people who retire are winding down, he's just getting started. He decided to build a brand new barn so he could host memorable and meaningful events. This summer he is hosting a conference for educational leaders. Everyone gets lost, confused, overwhelmed, stuck in a rut, off track, etc.

You’ll have a bad day, lose a customer, get fired from a job, get some bad news, make a mistake, get sick, have your feelings hurt, get in a bad argument, etc.

It’s part of life and business. It’s not necessarily your fault. It doesn’t matter.

What matters is WHAT you do when this happens.

If you give into the feelings of defeat, it can lead to destructive behavior, unhealthy ways of coping and even dangerous forms of medicating.😖

“Great leaders get stuck but they don’t stay stuck.”

👇🏼 5 ways to get unstuck

  1. Get up and Move!🏃🏽‍♂️

Stress on your body can bring peace to your mind. Do a challenging workout, take a walk outside and breathe the fresh air or go for a bike ride. Physical activity is a great way to interupt a mental downward spiral. You’ll experience the feeling of accomplishment. Your body will release endorphins that will immediately improve your mood. You’ll feel healthier and more empowered to face the challenge in front of you.

  1. Talk About It 🗣

Tell a friend, a mentor or your spouse about how you were derailed today. When you share your struggles with someone else, what sounds insurmountable in your head, often sounds manageable out loud. you are also giving someone else the opportunity to offer support and perspective that you can’t get on your own.

  1. Ditch the Quest for Comfort ☺️

It’s all right to feel uncomfortable. It’s part of life and an essential part of growth. A successful person understands that doing the right thing is more important than feeling comfortable. Deep satisfaction will come when you don’t strive for a quick fix. Success is a collection of several small decisions to do the right thing. Ask yourself, what would be best for me and others around me in the long run?

  1. Get Inspired 🦸‍♀️

You have free access to incredible content that can help you develop a positive mindset almost immediately. One short video or podcast could completely turn your day around. Jump on YouTube and search for Jim Rohn, Les Brown, Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, Og Mandino or Tony Robbins. Before you know it you’ll be ready to climb a mountain.

  1. Start Over 🌞

Maybe today was a wash. Don’t let it carry over into tomorrow. You have an opportunity for a fresh start. Go to bed early, wake up early, start your day with a run and a healthy breakfast. Drink a lot of water. Take time to pray or meditate. Let the weight of your disappointments go. Focus on being your best from this moment forward.

What has helped YOU when you find yourself stuck?

Today we're talking about a plan that every great leader has. My eyes were opened to this idea when I was building a deck as a full-time construction worker ten years ago. It's changed my life forever and it's something I will never stop doing as long as I'm alive.

I found something written on my whiteboard in my office that blew my mind. It just might mean that I'm launching something new and exciting!

One of the most significant challenges leader's face is the constant tension between work and personal life. Did I accomplish enough today? Am I spending enough time with my family? Will I miss dinner again? Will I get a chance to see the kids before they go to bed? When's the last time we got away to enjoy our marriage? These questions are haunting for the busy executive. If I asked your spouse who gets more of your attention, would he/she say your work? What would your kids say? The world's standards for great leadership don't seem to include a solid marriage and family. Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and more like them who have achieved remarkable success in the marketplace have left behind them a trail of broken relationships. Let's talk about what extraordinary leadership looks like in terms of the tension between work and family.

Your mind is like a garden. Have you every tried to grow something? What would happen if you planted a seed and then did nothing? You didn't add water, sun or fertilizer, what would happen? Not only would nothing you planted grow, weeds of all varieties would take over. You're thinking is just like this. If left unattended, it can become a mess of negativity, limited mindsets and small thinking. Extra ordinary leaders are intentional about shaping their thinking.

So many leaders lack access to unbiased perspective and feedback. Where can you go when you're at the top? Who can you trust and lean on through your struggles? Who is really in your corner? Every great leader has a team of trusted friends they can rely on. People who tell them the truth and have their back. If you want to reach your potential as a leader, don't go another day without putting this in place.

If you or your team want to take the Enneagram Assessment, send an email to Michael@mcgreevyleadership.com with the subject Enneagram. The cost is $40  per individual.

In the past decade, researchers have uncovered an essential quality that every great leader needs to have in order to be successful long term. Hint: It's not the ability to get things done. In this episode, we'll discuss what it is and how any leader can build it, even if they don't have it now.

  2. Intentionally setting aside some time to celebrate

I'm thrilled to make it to the 8th Episode! Why? Because most Podcasters throw in the towel bt the time they reach their 7th episode. That put's the Business of Livin' Podcast in the top 50%. Whew hoo! You have to celebrate the small victories.

Today I unpack the idea that a person's greatest contribution to the world, or their purpose, is often discovered through their own pain, shame, weakness, mistakes, or fears. I unpack powerful stories of both famous and not so famous people who have leveraged their challenges for incredible impact. We look into the lives of Nick Vujicic, Amber Lago, Sylvester Stallone, Albert Einstein, Michael Jordan, Victor Frankl and Michelle Traylor.

While you might not be famous or feel influential enough, you can do this too. What is your greatest fear? What is the source of your greatest shame or weakness? It just might be the place where your purpose will be found. Most people spent their entire lives trying to avoid icing their fear and shame. As a result they miss the opportunity to take it and use it for the benefit of others.

Take some time to reflect on what that is for you. How could it be used for the good of others?

OUR DEEPEST FEAR

By Marianne Williamson

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves,

“Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking

so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we're liberated from our own fear,

our presence automatically liberates others.

Tony Robbins says the key to happiness can be can be summed up in one word. I think there are 3 keys to happiness and I'll share them in this episode. What comes to mind the you think about what would make you happier?

More Money? More Power and Influence? Expensive Cars? Jewelry? Elaborate Vacations? You might know that research shows that none of these things really make people happier but do you believe that deep down?

The 3 Keys to Happiness are this:

1. Progress: The happiest people in life are consistently growing, learning and getting better. Similarly, Earl Nightingale describes success as, "The progressive realization of a worthy ideal." If you're unhappy, take inventory of your life. What areas of life are you seeing progress in?

2. Gratefulness: When you are committed to achieving goals and making progress, it's easy to get sucked into the endless loop of setting a goal, grinding hard to achieve it, reaching the goal and starting over again. It's a cycle void of joy and a trap that can lead to burnout and even depression. Take time to look back, celebrate your successes, learn from your failures and practice gratitude for what you have and how far you've come. Commit to a daily practice of gratitude and you'll see your level of joy dramatically increase.

3. People: All the success in the world will be void of joy if it's achieved in isolation. We need to intentionally connect with and share life with others.

A poem about happiness...

The Choice is Mine by Amimbola T. Alabi

Life may not let me choose my lot,

But whether I'd be happy or not...

That is my choice.

To leave hurtful memories behind

Or allow them to bother my mind...

The choice is mine.

To fret over a mistake when it's done

Or learn from it and move on...

The choice is mine.

To be bothered by all that people say

Or ignore them and go my own way...

The choice is mine.

To hide my feelings, pent up, unspoken,

Or say my mind and ease the burden...

The choice is mine.

To enjoy what I've been able to gain

Or ungratefully regard it with disdain...

The choice is mine.

Sometimes I won't get to pick my lot,

But whether I'll be happy or not

Will always be my choice.

When we're kids we're told not to talk to strangers. Some of us are still avoiding unnecessary conversations with the people around us. The fact is,  it's impossible to have meaningful and fulfilling life without engaging with other humans.

In this episode, I'll talk about how to make the most of the opportunity when people cross your path. I'll share some real life examples of how this played out in my life and how you can get off the sidelines and start changing lives with your words and actions.

Story #1: Why a woman from the Congo offered me breast milk

Story #2: How a fighter pilot made me feel like a man while I was serving him ice-cream.

The necessary mindsets needed:

  1. Focussed on others vs focussed on yourself

  2. Take action when the opportunity arises, don't overanalyze

*You cannot genuinely encourage someone and feel depressed at the same time. When you spread joy, affirmation and encouragement, it will return to you 10 fold.

When you're pursuing a thrilling vision for your life, inevitably, you will encounter resistance, frustration and struggle. It can be paralyzing at times. Getting stuck is part of of the journey. In this episode I'll talk about the truths you need to know about struggle, the mindset you need to overcome them and 6 practical steps to take to get unstuck.

Song of the Week: Rise Up - Andra Day

Truth's About Struggle

-The struggle you're in, is not the whole picture.

-Struggles are like the seasons, spring always comes after winter. Mountains are always near valleys.

-Struggles reveal problems that need our attention. They provide clarity and protection from bigger problems.

-They are an essential part of your growth journey. With the right perspective, they make you better, wiser and stronger.

Mindsets That Keep You Stuck

I'm a Victim: "Why can't things be easier for me?" "Why am I so unlucky?" "I must be fundamentally flawed."

Comparison: "Things come so easily for other people." "Other people are more talented and better than me." "Why can't I seem to get it right when all these other people are killing it?"

6 Steps to Getting Unstuck

  1. Change your Environment 2. Get Physical 3. Find Inspiration 4. Tell Someone 5. Get a Quick Win 6. Don't Miss the Learning Opportunity

The Benefits of Struggling

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared, he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole.

Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened!

In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings.

It never was able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. And we could never fly.

The Rut Manifesto

There has been an assault on my mind and spirit. I feel defeated, ineffective, like a failure, like a fraud. I'm slipping. Why do I feel this way? My opportunities haven't changed. In fact, if I take action, I can find more than I ever have before. My abilities haven't changed. In fact, I'm growing and learning more everyday. I will not be paralyzed by doubt! I will not give in to fear by clinging to what I already have! I will boldly charge ahead toward new opportunities!I may feel like a failure, but I know that victory will be mine if I keep pressing forward. I know that the more I generously give to others, the more I will be compensated. I will not settle for mediocrity! If fear, doubt and failure visit me again, they will immediately be kicked out. When I face challenges and difficulties, I may get knocked down but I will always get up, stronger and smarter than before. I am a force to be reckoned with! I will never give up! I will always bounce back. I have decided, today I will victorious!

The word "discipline" used to make me cringe. It made me feel like I was being robbed of all the goodness of life. I used to struggle at being consistent with so many things that I associate the word with failure. The more I failed to follow through, the worse I felt and the more I despised discipline.

I have a new relationship with discipline now. It now provides me with the foundation to thrive and make the most out of life. In this episode, we talk about simple ways to embrace discipline and how it actually helps you get everything you want out of life.
