Adventures In Fasting (formerly Motivational Fasting) is a mindset shift that helps you feel better and more empowered, whether you are using an intermittent 16:8 plan, alternate day or extended fasting.
Imagine being so motivated to do something that you put willpower and self-discipline out of a job. Sounds too good to be true? Not at all. An adventure, while being a challenge, is more of an inspiration than trying to push harder and live off ever-dwindling reserves of willpower and self-discipline.
This is not about getting on a positivity high that is impossible to maintain – however, side effects of this approach do include: excitement due to acknowledging the power you are tapping into, being able to relax into life because of drastic improvements you are making to your health - and turning struggle into adventure.
It’s time to unlearn the lessons you've been taught that demotivate you.
It's time to change the stories you’ve been telling yourself about harsh perfectionism, failure and toxic guilt that doesn’t belong to you.
Fasting is the greatest health revolution of the 21st century, an engine of awesomeness that can reverse diabetes, spring clean your cells, relieve depression, prevent Alzheimer's, impact autoimmune disease , help you manage ADHD and kill cancer cells...among many other mind-blowing benefits.
Harriet Morris started intermittent fasting in spring 2021, as a response to her own compulsive eating and weight gain that happened in lockdown. She uses a blend of IF as well as other forms of fasting. Two things have surprised her – (1) the amazing improvements in her mobility, mental wellbeing and productivity she has experienced; and (2) the unnecessary misery so many people endure through what she calls Puritanical Fasting. The idea of Adventures in Fasting is a response to (2) and it is her mission to help others experience their own version of (1).
Book a 20 minute chat with me In this episode, I talk about what The series Severance, starring Adam Scott and Patricia Arquette, has to teach us about how to make any kind of fasting an easier, more empowering experience. No spoilers included (I cover no more than the trailer) - and no need to have watched the programme itself to get something out of this episode. In Severance, employees of the ominous Lumon corporation choose to have a chip implanted in their brains that severs their work consciousness from the person they are outside the office. I was inspired by this consciousness split to explore a problem that I see many people having with fasting. Imagine severing your consciousness every time you fast. You get to avoid the discomfort, because you have outsourced going through that discomfort to - let’s call them - ‘Fasting You’. This reminded me of a concept I heard the writer David McRaney talk about - Now You vs Future You. It is a kind of severance - minus the sci fi. On 1st January, millions allocate their health to Future You…the only problem being that Future You inevitably turns into Now You. You know Now You - they are the ones with resistance and minor obstacles like, er, life that get in the way of their goals. I talk about this and what I see as the alternative to this Now You vs Future You schism. Resources Book a 20 minute chat with me Fasting Game Starter Guide Severance trailer Cheers now! DAVID BOWIE Amateur sounding vocalist…not outstanding…a singer devoid of personality…not particularly exciting. -BBC audition report for David Bowie and his band The Lower Third, from 1965 Four years before David Bowie exploded onto the pop scene in 1969 with Space Odyssey, this is what BBC music executives thought of his musical talent. However, when we think of Bowie, we think: cultural icon, rock god, towering musical influence, edgy androgynous cultural boundary breaker. Bowie was so prolific that I have never met anyone who doesn't like at least one Bowie of his records. I don't think you can say the same about other musical icons of reinvention, like Elvis or Madonna. So what has Bowie got to teach us about fasting motivation? Here's what. Email me info {at} theshiftinside.com In the Harry Potter series, the term muggle is used to identify non-magical folk. It is no coincidence that boy wizard Harry's muggle relatives, The Dursleys, are not only non-magical, but so straightlaced you can almost see their metaphorical straightjackets under their clothes. They are more blinkered than a racehorse at The Grand National, and more small-minded than the Buriolestes schultzi dinosaur, whose brain was the size of a pea. For many years now, I have been using the term Muggle to refer to anyone who I find narrow-minded, lacking in curiosity and never questions their beliefs. Fasting muggles are people who dismiss this awesome health tool out of hand. If you have had to face the derision of fasting muggles, you will know how demotivating it can be. You do your first day intermittent fasting and are super proud of yourself. Now tell a fasting muggle and watch them gleefully puncture your well-deserved excitement and pride in your hard work. You need to know how to handle these people, and I show you how in this episode. Once you liberate yourself from worrying about the irrelevant opinions of fasting muggles, you are free to maximise the transformative power of a life lived to the full.

Heads Up: The weekend of the 15-16th January I am leading an online guided fast. Zoom sessions to inspire and support you, as well as support materials are included. More details to follow in the next few days. In this episode I talk about the biggest New Year fasting mistake you can make. Here it is: not understanding the interplay between discomfort and pleasure. You see, most people have a very dysfunctional attitude to the place of both discomfort and pleasure in their lives. PLEASURE is seen as illicit, something that you cannot just allow yourself. There is surface excitement in taking pleasure when you apparently shouldn’t. Is excess the only form of pleasure you are allowing yourself? Did you know that there are other ways to get true pleasure from eating? DISCOMFORT is the punishment for having sought pleasure. This is not just evident in fasting, but wellness as a whole: look at extreme programs like Insanity. Push yourself to the limits and you can purify yourself of the excess pleasure you committed. You can see how intermittent fasting and extended fasts can get misused in this swing between the two opposites. You can see an illustration of this Metronome here Both discomfort and pleasure have very useful roles in our lives, and the key to stilling The Metronome is to reframe both of them and stop misusing them! I explain how in this episode. Harriet Morris Creator of Motivational Fasting
Watch the video version of this episode here: This bonus episode seems at first blush to have nothing to do with fasting – but as you’ll discover, it is really relevant to helping you develop an ease and power around intermittent, alternate day or extended day fasting. How so? Well, I interview someone who has managed to pull off what I see very few human being do…and is the key to happiness in the 21st century. I am talking about working toward what you want, while developing an uncommon resilience for the curveballs that life throws at us. Artist Catherine Rains has had her unfair share of challenges in life, but is just about the happiest, most well-adjusted, ego-free person I have ever met. Why is this relevant for Motivational Fasting? Because if we can manage life directly, we have no need to misuse fasting or food to do the job. At the end I discuss some of the points discussed and how they help you with your fatsing goals. In this interview, I talk to artist Catherine Rains about her two-pronged approach to dealing with life’s problems: “Double-pronged non-resistance”: while continually affirming the job she wanted, she was at the same time embracing the job she had. How to be unintentionally intentional The five words anyone can use in a negative situation to feel more empowered Catherine’s epiphany about non resistance The non linear nature of change. How she diverted her energy to sidestep jealousy and intended her way to the job of her dreams Why affirmations don’t work for so many people - because they are doing this thing alongside the affirmation Her strategy for releasing fear and dread after her cancer diagnosis (I have never heard this from anyone else) How she developed compassion for her husband in the midst of her divorce but still shielded herself from his manipulation Her hilarious way of managing old resentments RESOURCES Check Catherine out on Instagram: Find out more about Catherine here And on Instagram
Get your Weight loss is probably the number one reason people fast, but in this episode I am going to reveal the conundrum inherent in fasting for weight loss. If you can understand this, you can make fasting and intermittent fasting a much more effective AND empowering tool for shapeshifting. People think that weight loss is simple, and they are just bad at implementing the simple rules (either calories in/out or carbs are the devil). Both of these ideas are incredible oversimplifications. Why Weight Loss Is Not As Simple As You Think #1 The whole idea of shedding fat has been corrupted. 1.1 You see, this is so inextricably tied up with body shame. We have all met people who are in enviable shape, and still hate their bodies. You can never win when you use slimming down as a tool to cure body hatred. 1.2 It is very oversimplified. In Think Like A Rocket Scientist, Ozan Varol says We all long for absolutes; action and reaction, and neat cause and effect relationships where A inexorably leads to B 1.3 Punishing yourself into change has become acceptable as the only way to achieve the transformation you long for. #2 Managing your weight is about insulin, not calories. Dr Jason Fung in his book The Obesity Code says “I can make anybody fat. How? By prescribing insulin. It won’t matter that you have willpower, or that you exercise. It won’t matter what you choose to eat. You will get fat. It’s simply a matter of enough insulin and enough time.” If you count calories, 100 cals of avocado equals 100 cals of sugar. The truth is that one has a drastically different effect on your insulin levels to the other. #3 Carbohydrates play a more complicated role in our lives than you might like to think. Social events often have processed carbs as the centrepiece. Are you going to forego the carb fest and take some carrot sticks to much on in fake celebration? Another non nutritional job many people use carbs for is to manage difficult situations. Hate your job? Eat junk. Argument with your spouse? Head for the deli. Demonising carbs in order to stop using them as emotional support does not work. The Solution: How To Shed Weight Fasting In A Way That Feels Good AND Works Understand The Difference Between Fool’s Gold Motivation (FGM) and Empowered Motivation (EM) FGM provides a reason to fast that you are going to rebel against. EM is any source of motivation that sees you through your very natural resistance. Let me give you an example: Eclipse Thinking Eclipse thinking is when you achieve a goal by focusing on something else. For many people, weight is their sun goal; their dearest wish. If you focus on something else instead of look directly at the main goal, you can get the benefit of BOTH like I did. For example, defocusing on the 5lb loss you want your next fast to deliver and instead turning your attention to the awesome longterm health benefits, of which there are many. The Final Piece of The Puzzle: Inconsistency If you can make fasting easier and more empowering, you are more likely to do it more often. They got so fascinated, so utterly infatuated with their thing that struggle dissolved under the weight of their personal investment in their subject or skill...just for the sake of it. In this episode, we reframe intermittent fasting (and other types too) as a relationship. We look at this by contrasting puritanical fasting (PF) with Motivational Fasting (MF). In PF, the relationship between you and the fast is that of a harsh parent (the fast) and a naughty child (you) who has less autonomy than a toddler. In MF, things are A LOT more fun. The relationship is that of two people who have just started dating. In this reframe, the relationship is about slowly testing the waters, and discovering if you get on. In terms of fasting and intermittent fasting, this is about seeing how well a certain system works for you, and if you can stick to it sustainably. In this episode, I take two challenges that fasters commonly experience, and look at how to tackle them according to whether the puritanical (strict parent) or motivational (new relationship) dynamic is at play. You know how amazing fasting and intermittent fasting are – so why isn’t everyone doing it? Overwhelmingly the answer is: fear of hunger In this article I will look at 5 areas on the topic how to deal with hunger when fasting, including my own experience going from terror of being hungry to confidently doing 100 hour fasts. Why We Are Wired By Evolution to Tolerate Hunger If we were not designed to cope with being hungry, you would not be reading the words on this screen – because your ancestors (who had much less nourishment at their disposal and lived through many periods of food scarcity) The Real Science Behind How Hunger Works You may be surprised to learn that hunger is a very hormonal thing. For example, why aren’t you starving hungry when you wake up in the morning, after hours of – you guessed it – fasting?! Because the hunger hormone ghrelin is at its lowest in the morning. I would bet your own experience backs this up. Moreover, research shows that ghrelin levels (and consequently hunger) drop on fasts of longer than 48 hours, presumably so that our cavedwelling ancestors were not too distracted by rumbling tummies that they could not go out and get the food they so desperately needed. Hunger Is a Tide, Not a Fire This is a super useful image to sum up the preceding information on ghrelin. I have found that I do get peaks and troughs of hunger during my fasting days, with the peaks being less than 20 minutes long and the throughs lasting hours. My Experience With Hunger During Fasting I transferred the knowledge and expertise that I had built up during my years coaching binge eaters onto fasting. The neutrality towards discomfort, the curiosity-driven attitude – both of these really helped me tolerate hunger. As did an inability to recognise failure. And hunger got easier and easier to bear. This is the crucible in which I created the whole concept of Motivational Fasting, and I truly believe that this approach is essential uis you want to experience hunger as increasingly abstract and uninteresting. A Thought Exercise to Help You Dismantle Your Fear of Hunger In the episode of the podcast above, I give you two images of fear; one I call Keep Out fear and the other Jake Gyllenhall fear. Before Adventures In Fasting was born, there was Motivational Fasting. This episode is from that era, hence the different name. .................................................. Get your free video course I first tried intermittent fasting (IF) in 2018 during a month off work. I loved how it reduced my mobility issues, but felt at the time that it would be difficult in my usual working life. It lay forgotten for three years, an interesting - but ultimately unsustainable - experiment. Fast forward to spring 2021. I had just been through a year of increasingly compulsive eating, a not-very-fabulous COVID coping mechanism. This was aggravated by the fact that I was a binge eating coach with a popular podcast, The Eating Coach. Those 200,000 plus downloads felt like a big lie. I got to this day in February 2021 where I simultaneously admitted my compulsion to myself (as well as my audience) AND made a decision that something had to change. I had to do something different. I decided to try IF again. My First Day Intermittent Fasting I remember the fear I had beforehand: the terror of being hungry. I gave myself a get out clause: if it is too terrible, I can just eat. But a strange and rather marvelous thing happened: about four hours in, I noticed I was hungry, but it was a new kind of hunger. Flat, abstract. A hunger that I had absolutely zero interest in. I had never felt like that in my entire (almost 50 years) life. In this episode, I talk about Turning Food Compulsion on Its Head This was an inversion of how binge eating urges operate. When you are compulsive, you are not hungry - but your urge to eat is overwhelming. But here I was, hungry but with no interest in eating whatsoever. The Progression From Intermittent To 24 To 36 Hour Fasts and Beyond This inner game, this low-commitment experiment, this careful navigating of my fear of hunger - thus set me in a trajectory for falling in love with fasting. In March, I did my first 24 hour fast. I have gone on to longer fasts of up to 100 hours (just over 4 days). Turning Fasting Into An Inner Gym Membership I realised pretty quickly that fasting is a skill. It is a skill to tolerate hunger until it recedes – a skill you can develop. Results So Far Huge improvement in mobility Big reduction in my food compulsion Looser clothes Improved cognitive function Improved wellbeing Harriet Morris Info {at} theshiftinside.com
Before Adventures In Fasting, this podcast was called Motivational Fasting. This is one of these old episodes. Starring a patronising doctor, the death of willpower and one feisty toddler… In this episode I am going to explain what is motivational fasting (MF) by contrasting it to puritanical fasting (PF). The difference will become clear as you listen. .............................. Get your free video course: 5 Ways To Make Fasting Easier here ................................................ To be clear, MF is not about a specific strategy (say 16:8 or alternate day fasting) – it is about mindset. You can use MF (or if you are very unlucky, PF) to do intermittent, ADF or extended day fasting. Here are some of the main differences between MF and PF (more are mentioned in the show): Willpower vs Experimentation PF Every fast is a test of your willpower. If you do not last the entire time you set yourself or deviate from any of the rules of the fast, you have failed and deep shame ensues. MF Every fast is an experiment. An experiment can neither succeed nor fail – it can only give you data. You may not like the data, but you appreciate the value of that information. If a fast goes badly, you learn from the experience and optimise. More on optimisation shortly. #3 Easy vs Impossible To Fail PF It is very easy to fail at puritanical fasting – or else see any setback as a failure, and a reason to feel guilty. This happens because fasters have not learnt to navigate their own resistance. Many do not carefully consider how lifestyle and fasting fit together symbiotically – both are important, and compromise is necessary from both. MF It is impossible to fail at motivational fasting. Why? Because you are constantly experimenting. Another way to look at it is like a toddler walking. They have no concept of failure, or indeed success. They just start walking. At first they are pretty disastrous, and require a LOT of support and practise. The first time they attempt the unchartered territory of the carpet between the sofa arm and the coffee table, and plop down onto their bottom after one faltering step, do they give up and trash talk their lack of coordination? Of course not. They keep going. They are walking. In motivational fasting, you are fasting. That is all. #4 Whose Rules? PF Puritanical fasting is about following someone else’s rules. You have less autonomy over your experience than a toddler, who at least is encouraged to choose between healthy options. This parent-child dynamic is incredibly disempowering and a breeding ground for food rebellion. MF is about continually optimising and iterating in order to discover your own bespoke set of fasting protocols. A tailor-made process that suits you, your lifestyle, and sets you up for success. You no longer know the meaning of the word ‘struggle’. #5 The Outer Game vs The Inner Game PF focuses on external measures of progress: calories and weigh ins. Now of course there are times when it is appropriate to take these external measurements, for example when fasting under medical supervision. The problem is that these measurements A) are used far too often and B) carry too much emotional power. For example, weighing yourself straight after a 36 hour fast on Wednesday and then again two days later will make you delighted mid week and depressed by Friday. You know very well that a good deal of the Wednesday weight loss is water that you will regain by the weekend. Why put yourself through such misery? MF focuses on the inner game. You may have weight to lose, but you know that obsessing over it on a daily basis is an exercise in disempowerment. Whereas external measures can change and seem temperamental, the inner game of tolerating hunger is one that gets easier the more you do it as long as you do it in conjunction with other aspects of this approach outlined in this article RESOURCES What Is Motivational Fasting article: Harriet Morris Email: info {at} theshiftinside.com
Imagine being so motivated to do something that you put willpower and self-discipline out of a job. Sounds too good to be true? Not at all. Motivational Fasting is a mindset shift that helps you feel better and more empowered, whether you are using an intermittent 16:8 plan, alternate day or extended fasting. This is not about getting on a positivity high that is impossible to maintain – however, side effects of this approach do include: excitement due to acknowledging the power you are tapping into, being able to relax into life because of drastic improvements you are making to your health and turning struggle into adventure.
