We revisit 1999 with The Mummy, a romantic comedy blended nicely with an action film staring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. These two along with a large group of excellent supporting characters are mixed up in an expedition of treasure-seeking explorers in the Sahara Desert in 1925. Stumbling upon an ancient tomb, the hunters unwittingly set loose a 3,000-year-old curse in Hamunaptra by accidentally resurrecting The Mummy named Imhotep at the City of the Dead.

With a two hour movie, we decided to go with three beers while watching. We started with a West Coast IPA from Grains of Wrath (WA), second was a Hazy IPA from Long Beach Beer Lab (CA), and lastly a Rice Lager from Wayfinder Beer (OR). All three were decent, some went along better than expected. Listen to the episode to hear about these and some history around action films of the late 1990's.

On this wartime and historical drama driven episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched Pressure, a 2026 film directed by Anthony Maras. Based on a play about the decision made by the Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser) to go or not to go on June 5th, the projected D-Day invasion of France. The weather forecast is the driving force behind the choices made and decision to delay D-Day. The two main weather forecasters, Scottish Captain James Stagg (Andrew Scott) and his American counterpart Irving Krick (Chris Messina) burn up the screen with conflict and challenges to their scientific methods. The story is gripping, the acting is pretty decent, and the location and historical footage that is included make this a worth while watch.

We had a couple of beers to go with this movie. First was a Summer Shandy from Block 15 (OR), followed by an American IPA by Kings and Daughters Brewing (OR). One really didn't go with the film while the other was spot on. Give the episode a listen to hear why, and a rundown on what the scientific method is and what it matters in this movie.

2025 Japan brings us this episode of Movie And A Beer with Rental Family, a drama that follows Phillip, an American actor (Brendan Fraser) who lives and works in Tokyo and struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig acting or playing different roles to help people find some happiness and joy in their lives. Directed by HIKARI, this film has great actors and the story brings traditional Japanese life to the screen in a way that is honorable to their culture and expectations, while showing they can also be rigid and challenging.

We had a couple of great beers along the way, first was a Portland Xtra Pale Ale from Vice Beer (WA) and then a West Coast IPA from Obelisk (OR). While one really stood out, both were decent and were worth checking out. Give the episode a listen to hear about those beers and some great discussion about this unique experience in Japan.

On this fantasy driven episode of Movie And A Beer, we review The Yinyang Master, a Chinese release from 2021. This is a big screen adaption of the mobile game "Onmyoji" which is a story about a feud that erupts between the human and demon realms. It closely follows Yinyang master Qing Ming as he teams up with disgraced guard Yuan Boya to vanquish a demonic threat as a conspiracy looms. While this story is not terribly complex, the visuals and overall impact of the writing is well thought out and worth the two hours to watch it.

We enjoyed a couple of beers along the way, first up was a Czech style lager from Ruse Brewing (OR), second up was a Dark Lager from Single Hill Brewing (WA). Give the episode a listen to hear about these and a great discussion about the story and how it provides a great perspective on topics like slavery and forgiveness.

On this sci-fi driven episode of Movie And A Beer we watched the classic 1974 movie Zardoz. Directed by John Boorman with Sean Connery, Charlotte Rampling, and Sara Kestelman in staring roles. It explores the ruling class of beings called Eternals and their boredom with immortality in the year 2293. Zed (Sean Connery) is one of their Brutals who helps manage the lower class and discovers that Zardoz is a fake god by stowing away inside of it secretly, which travels to the protected lands of the Eternals known as the Vortex. Once in the Vortex, Zed upends their stagnant, sexless, and eternally bored society, leading to wild philosophical consequences.

Along the way we sipped on a couple of great beers and first up was a Pale Ale from Away Days (OR) and second was a Helles Lager from Cooper Mountain Ale Works (OR). There was one that was slightly better than the other, give the episode a listen to hear which, and our take on how this movie is worth the watch.

On this latest episode of Movie And A Beer, we examine one of the greatest sci-fi films of the 1980's with The Terminator. James Cameron's time-travel masterpiece with a cyborg assassin played by Arnold Schwarzenegger as it tries to kill the mother of the future's rebellion leader, Sarah Connor, played by Linda Hamilton. While it's dated with limited special effects, the story holds up and draws you into the past as it follows Sarah's escape from the Terminator with the help of future soldier Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn). It's worth a watch with great sound design, realistic battles, car chases, and explosions.

Along the way we enjoyed a couple of Helles Lagers from Mirage brewing (WA) and 8 Bit Brewing (CA). One was a bit better than the other, but you'll have to listen to the episode to hear why.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer we explore the world of Ex Machina. Directed by Alex Garland, this 2015 movie presents what would happen if AI or a robot with AI could fool you? The visuals are amazing, the science fiction is believable, the acting incredible, and the environment created brings you along for the ride. There are many questions asked in the film of both humanity and the AI, and we do our best to ask and answer some of these questions ourselves.

Along the way, we had a couple of beers, first up was an old school recipe IPA from Hetty Alice Brewing (OR) and the other was a Hazy IPA from Little Beast Brewing (OR). One was a bit more successful than the average. Give the episode a listen to hear about our take on AI and the success of this film in presenting the questions such as "what happens if I fail your test?"

We're back in the 80's with this episode of Movie And A Beer, it's Big Trouble in Little China staring Kurt Russel as Jack Burton, a truck driving loud mouth that seems to stumble himself out of danger more times than not. Jack just can't seem to catch a break as he get's mixed up with a magical plot put into motion by Lo Pan, a 2000 year old Chinese wizard that's trying to become mortal again in the depths of the San Francisco China Town. Jack helps his friend rescue the two green eyed ladies before Lo Pan marries and kills them. With plenty of action and groovy special effects, this kung-fu comedy driven spoof is one of the cultural touchstones of those that grew up in the 80's.

We had a couple of great beers along the way, including a rice lager from Wayfinder Beer (OR), and a collaboration double dry hopped double IPA from Widomaker and Other Half Brewing. Give the episode a listen to hear about these beers and a great discussion about acting and how to deliver lines.

On this fantasy driven episode of Movie And A Beer, we encountered the Princess Bride, a 1987 classic from director Rob Reiner. This is a pretty straight forward fairy tale adventure about a beautiful young woman (Buttercup) and her one true love (Westley) as told by a grandfather to his grandson who's a bit under the weather. There are a lot of homage being paid to older films that relied upon acting and dialogue more than set and special effects. With tons of one-liners that are memorable and part of our cultural lexicon today, this is definitely worth a watch.

Along the way we also had a couple of great beers from two local nano-breweries here in the Portland area. First up was a Dry Rye Helles Lager from Duality Brewing (OR), followed up by a Dry-Hopped Rice Lager w/ flowers from Tiny Giants (OR). Both were delicate and brought a bit of depth while watching the movie. Give the episode a listen to hear about our favorite parts and why these beers went so well with them.

With the recent rise of AI here in present day, we at Movie And A Beer figured it would be a good time to revisit some of the past movies that exemplify what "might" or "could" happen if we don't pay attention. Which brings us to the 1991 James Cameron action blockbuster, Terminator 2: Judgement Day staring Edward Furlong as young John Connor, Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, Robert Patrick as the T-1000 newer model Terminator, with Linda Hamilton reprising her role as Sarah Connor. This epic sequel takes place 11 years after the first Terminator movie and brings a whole bunch of baggage with it. We discuss in a lot of details the visual and sound editing and effects used in the film and how it combined a lot of different film-making techniques that were not so common back in 1991, as well as enjoyed a couple of beers along the way.

First up was a Northern style Pilsner from Urban Chestnut Brewing (MO) via Dutchless Ales (NY) followed by a juicy NE Style IPA from Trap Door Brewing (WA). Both had their high and low points along with the movie. Give the episode a listen to hear about that and an in-depth discussion about explosions and munitions.

Here we are with another super-hero installment of Movie And A Beer, this time it's The Batman which was released in 2022 from director Matt Reeves. We follow a young Batman, played by Robert Pattinson as he uncovers a long time plot within the city of Gotham that involves his own family. The film is more of a ‘70s crime drama in it's aesthetic and presentation visually and this lends to the realism that is missing from most of the super-hero genre today.

During the lengthy film, we enjoyed a couple of local beers. First up was a Helles Lager from Brujos Brewing (OR) followed by a West coast IPA collab from Grains of Wrath (WA) and Boneyard Brewing (OR). Both provided a good quality of flavor to go along with the action on the screen. Give the episode a listen as we discuss in great length the aspects of this iteration of Batman in film and how it fits into existing cannon.

With nostalgia in our bones, we at Movie And A Beer appreciate the finer nuances of the craft when it pays homage to the Golden Age of Cinema....this time around, it's Hail, Caesar!, a Cohen brothers production. Set in the 1950's it follows studio boss Eddie Mannix played by Josh Brolin as he sets out to handle the day to day activities and chaos that is taking place on the movie lot. The main plot follows the story of one of their biggest stars getting kidnapped by Communist sympathizers and Eddie's job is to get him back and save the film.

Along with some amazing visuals and acting, we enjoyed a couple of beers along with the movie. First up as a pilsner from Silver Falls Brewing (OR), followed by an IPA from Old Town Brewing (OR). Both provided a great and refreshing addition to the film. Listen in to hear more about the history of Old Town Pizza & Brewing and what it means to get "shanghaied".

For this episode of Movie And A Beer we go back to 1999 and experience the episodic The 13th Warrior. One of the many films to come out around that same time that works both as an historical drama and mythical journey for the protagonist of the film. Antonio Banderas portrays Ahmad ibn Fadlan, who by no fault of his own, finds himself in the company of Vikings on a quest to vanquish an evil demon. While the story is simplistic, there is a lot of well thought out character development in both cultural and symbolic nature that brings the viewer along with a keen sense of what it takes to build trust and become a part of a close nit group.

We were also lucky to have a couple of really well made beers along for the ride. First up was a Kolsch style ale from VICE BEER (WA), followed by a double decocted Bock from Wayfinder (OR). Both provided a clean and complex pallet to go along with the movie. Listen in to hear about what the decoction method is in brewing and how it helps create a unique profile for you to enjoy.

With amazing special effects and writing, Movie And A Beer found ourselves in the midst of a challenging yet provocative sci-fi driven and all around good film titled Gentlemen Broncos. Released in 2009, it was written by Jared and Jerusha Hess and directed by Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre fame. The film stars Michael Angarano, Jemaine Clement, Jennifer Coolidge, and Sam Rockwell and follows a teenage author whose fantasy story is plagiarized by an established author, as well as made into a low-budget film by a local director. It has a lot of interesting humor and the plight of the young author is one that we could all relate to and understand how one's expectations are rarely met when it comes to your dreams and life.

While enjoying the movie, we sipped on a couple of great beers. First up was a rye pale ale from local Leikam Brewing, a local spot out in SE Portland, followed by a 'tavern stout' collab from a couple of Seattle breweries, Human People Beer and Bizarre Brewing. We have a great discussion about stouts and other dark beers, so give the episode a listen to hear about that and what other films we might pair up with astounding movie.

On this teenage story episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss with our youth correspondent Otto the recent film Apollo 10 1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood , by Richard Linklater. The film is pseudo-autobiographical in nature and takes you to the moon and back in this story about growing up in the 1960s in Houston, TX. Visually, it's animated but most of the scenes were filmed live-action and then later turned into the rotoscoped style as the director has done on some of his previous films. This feels like an ad for the 1960's with the injection of products and daily life of teen's during that time brought to you in vivid color.

We enjoyed a couple of beers along the way as well, including a West Coast style Pilsner from Roses By The Stairs (AZ), and followed that with an IPA from Binary Brewing Co. (OR). Both lent a nice flavor to the visuals while we watched. Listen in to hear about those, and a lot of other conversations about growing up and how events like this impact our lives.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the exceptionally well done movie Train Dreams, a 2025 release directed by Clint Bentley and based off of a novella by the same name that follows the life of Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly changing America of the early 20th Century. The acting, visuals, music/atmosphere, and directing is some of the best we've all seen in a long while. You should check this amazing piece of art out and while we did such, we also had a couple of beers along the way.

The first beer up was a west coast IPA collaboration between Fort George (OR) and Ghost Town (CA) that focused a lot on Moasic hops, and the second was a barrel aged porter from Montavilla Brew Works (OR) that was amazingly smooth and complex like the movie. Give the episode a listen to hear about these beers and our take on the beauty that was America back in the late 1800's.

On this Holiday episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched and enjoyed Bad Santa, a black comedy about a couple of guys that take advantage of the Christmas spirit and learn a valuable lesson in the end. Staring Billy Bob Thornton as the seasonal mall Santa Willie, Marcus (played by Tony Cox) as his partner in crime who spend each holiday working at a different department store where they rob it on Christmas Eve. Willie befriends a chubby loner boy (played by Brett Kelly), and a local bartender Sue (played by Lauren Graham) who has Santa issues. Their last heist goes wrong when the mall Security Manager Gin (played by Bernie Mac) wants in on the action.

We enjoyed a couple of really great seasonal local(ish) beers along with this movie. A CDA from Pelican Brewing (OR), and a Winter Warmer from Deschutes Brewing (OR). Give the episode a listen to hear some history of the Christmas holiday and our takes on why the movie actually has a good ending.

On this science vs. humanity episode of Movie And A Beer, we review the 2025 remake of classic horror and monster driven story by Mary Shelly, Frankenstein. This movie adaptation by Guillermo Del Toro is one of the best that's been produced in recent memory due to the character driven performances and beautifully executed visuals. We do a deep dive into how this retelling could be a nod to how AI is being treated today, and what we might learn from fiction such as this.

As this was a 2.5 hr movie, we went with three different beers. The first was a dark ale from Little Beast Brewing (OR), second up was a collaboration from Wayfinder Beer (OR), and last up was a west coast IPA from Grand Fir (OR) and Brujos Brewing (OR) respectively (also a collab). All three had their distinct impacts on us as we watched and we discuss in some detail why that is. Give the episode a listen to hear about this and other great topics!

On this period piece episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss Hedda, a modern reimagining of 1891 play Hedda Gabler. This updated early 20th century screen adaptation is by writer/director Nia DaCosta. Staring Tessa Thompson as Hedda, she finds herself struggling with a past lover and now rival while striving to get what she wants for her current life. Over the course of one crazy evening, many long-repressed desires and hidden secrets engulf her and everyone around her into a spiral of manipulation, passion, and betrayal.

While enjoying this amazing piece of art on the screen, we enjoyed a couple of beers. A nice Mexican lager from Loowit Brewing (WA) and the second was a Milk Stout from Threshold Brewing and Blending (OR). We discuss how these did and didn't go with the various parts of the film and consider what might actually work for such a complex story. Give the episode a listen to hear about that and much, much more.

On this AI driven episode of Movie And A Beer we review Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to the original 1982 film Blade Runner. We also sipped three beers along the way and briefly cover which went best. Denis Villeneuve brings to life the futuristic landscape of Replicants and humanity as they struggle to co-exist with "K" played by Ryan Gosling as the current day Blade Runner, hunting down his own kind. The story covers a broad range of questions about "What makes you human?" as the first movie did and even brings back Harrison Ford to reprise his role as the elder and now retired cop. We discuss in great length how AI/robots are portrayed in most Sci-Fi films and if this one provides a different perspective than the films of the past have.

Along with this great adventure, we enjoyed three beers that were selected based on their label design and names. First was a Festbier by Irrelevant Beer (WA), followed by a West Coast Pale Ale from TapRoom Brewing (CA) and we finished up with a West Coast IPA from ISM Brewing (CA). Give the episode a listen to hear about these great beers and hear some great answers from our AI friend that joined in the discussion.

On this jewel heist family drama of Movie And A Beer, we watched and review Brothers, a 2024 film from Max Barbakow which stars Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin as thieving siblings that are drawn into a plot to recover some stolen emeralds that their mother had hidden years prior on their dead step-father. While some might argue that this is more of a family drama film where the kids have to come to grips with the choices that their parents made, and try to learn from them (be it in good or bad ways), there is some redeeming qualities to the story. The acting is pretty good by the brothers and mother who shows up later on, the plot (while including of some holes here and there) is believable to an extent, and the supporting cast really shine as they figure out how to retrieve their lost inheritance.

Along the way we had a couple of great lagers, one from Recluse Brew Works (WA) and the other was from Montavilla Brew Works. Both had some exceptional qualities to them, and both actually went pretty well. We also spend a few minutes discussing the history of the podcast and why we do what we do. So give this episode a listen and hear all about that and this interesting family/comedy/heist movie.

Flashing back to 2001, Movie And A Beer brings you Legally Blonde, a wonderful comedy about female empowerment that follows Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) who chases her ex-fiancé Warner (Matthew Davis) from college out in California to Law School, Harvard specifically. Her intent isn't to become a lawyer at first, but she quickly turns the tables on everyone and proves that she can do what she puts her mind to, and not just to get revenge on Warner.

We did enjoy a couple of lighter beers along the way. The first was a Mexican Lager from Vice Beer (WA) and the second was a Golden Ale from Away Days Brewing (OR). One of them did go a bit better than the other, but both were decent sippers for the film. Listen in as we discuss these beers, a bit about fashion, and what makes a great hero's journey, even if it includes a Chihuahua in a pink handbag.

We're back around to another space based horror film on this episode of Movie And A Beer with the 2025 shudder release, ASH. The film follows Riya as she awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive. Ash stars Eiza González, Aaron Paul, Iko Uwais, Kate Elliott, Beulah Koale, and Flying Lotus.

While the film does lack a bit and falls flat, the two beers we enjoyed along the way did not. First up was a Black IPA from Oakshire Brewing (OR), and the second was a Saison-sour from The Ale Apothecary (OR). Both actually went well with the viewing, and we discuss some of the merits of each along with some brief explanation of the brewing process. Give the episode a listen if you want to hear about that and what a can conditioned beer is.

On this financial thriller episode of Movie And A Beer, we enjoyed the 2015 film The Big Short that was directed by Adam McKay and stars an amazing cast of A-list actors. The movie follows the events leading up to 2008 when the housing market collapsed and a number of large banks went under. Done in a documentary like style, the main characters are portrayed as some of the few smart betting types made a lot of money on the failure (they did a Big Short on it). There are a lot of 4th wall breaks that attempt to explain this challenging subject in simple terms and for the most part it succeed in doing such.

We had a couple of wonderful beers along the way, first was an Italian pilsner from Pfriem (OR) and the second was a hazy IPA from Irrelevant Beer (WA). While both had their merits in what they brought to the experience, one stood out a bit more than the other. Give the episode a listen to hear from one of our co-hosts who actually worked for one of the large banks that failed from this crisis about it and how Wall Street is driven more by greed than not.

On this most gangster of episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss Reservoir Dogs from 1992. The first of many films written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. It follows a group of criminals as their job goes sideways and the resulting fall out of their demise by the police. While most of the film is all dialogue and not a lot of action, what little bit there is holds your attention while the chips fall and they try to uncover who set them up.

We did have some great old friends stop by and enjoyed some snacks along the way with the beverages. Otto had some good ideas on what snacks go with this film and we also shared some thoughts on the three beers we enjoyed. First was a pilsner from Outer Range Brewing (CO), followed by a fruited Berliner weisse by Roses by the Stairs (Phoenix, AZ) Prickly Pear Fruited Berliner Weisse because things go sour in the film, and finally a nitro cream ale from Mother Earth Brewing Co (ID). While we didn't all like the last one, we did enjoy how them overall. Give the episode a listen to hear about those, the snacks, and a great discussion about film.

On this KPop (Korean Pop Music) themed episode of Movie And A Beer, we enjoyed the recent Netflix/Sony Studios Animation movie KPop Demon Hunters. This is a traditional animated story that you will find across a lot of the anime that's out there. Good vs. Evil. Pretty simple until you learn that those lines aren't always clear, your past and shame don't own you, and you can overcome even the greatest of evils if you heart desires it. The music and songs performed in the movie are integrated into the story, and support the character development really well.

Along with the movie we had three wonderful sipping beers that went really well with it. The first one was a Korean Golden Ale from White Crow Brewing (Korea) followed by a couple of other lighter beers that also followed the theme song "Golden" based on the beers name. Fremont Brewing Golden Pilsner and Hetty Alice Golden Hour Tropical Ale. Listen in for insights into the approach these beers take and how much this film converted the non-KPop listeners into fans.

We're back around to a great comedy and buddy film with Role Models on this episode of Movie And A Beer. Released in 2008, it follows salesmen Danny (Paul Rudd) and Wheeler (Seann William Scott) as they are given a choice after trashing a company truck, you can either go to jail or do community service in a mentoring program. They picked the mentoring and the two youth they get paired up with provide a great opportunity to both teach and learn about responsibility and helping each other.

The beers we had along with this buddy film included a Shandy from Block 15 (OR), and a West Coast Pilsner from Loowit Brewing. Both provided great refreshment and approached their respective flavor profiles with great balance. Give the episode a listen to hear about that and further discussion about fruit and beers.

Next up on Movie And A Beer, we have the acclaimed and award winning documentary Genghis BLues about the blind blues musician Paul Pena as he discovers the ancient art of Tuvan throat singing and his journey to the country where it originated. First time film maker Roko Belic allows the scenes and story to unfold in a natural and unscripted way (as documentaries should) and this brings you along on the spiritual and inspirational trip with Paul that is genuine and unique. We learned a lot about the culture and people of Upper Mongolia along with Paul as he not only competed in a national throat singing competition, but he wins the audience choice award for his amazing talent and signing.

Along the way we enjoyed three great sipping beers while the events of the film took place. First up we had a Pilsner from Fast Fashion (WA), then a lager from Kings and Daughters (OR), and finally a wild ale from Funky Fauna (OR). All three lent something to the viewing experience. Give the episode a listen to learn more about these and this great documentary.

There's a lot to unpack in this latest episode of Movie And A Beer with a review of Sinners and a couple of great sipping beers along the way. This movie is one of the best blends of horror, fantasy, historical drama, and music that we've ever seen. From start to finish, the story of redemption as presented by the director, Ryan Coogler brings you along for a lesson from our past. Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers Smoke, and Stack as they return to their roots to create a new life for themselves while dealing with the messes they had left behind many years prior. Their young cousin Sammie Moore (Preachers Son), played by Miles Caton, steals the show with his musical gifts and presence on the screen which brings down the vale between the spirt realm and the living, which of course draws the attention of the head vampire who's looking to expand his flock.

We highly recommend this film to anyone that's interested in horror, music, or great storytelling. We can also recommend either of the great lighter beers we had with this film. We started with a Deschutes Lemonade Shandy and moved along to a Helles Style beer from Holy Mountain. We do cover a bit about what a Shandy is vs. a Radler and what makes a lighter lager so good. Give the episode a listen to learn that and much, much more.

On this exploration of space and ciders, we enjoyed the 1968 sci-fi classic 2001 A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick. This film is considered one of the most influential sci-fi epics to come out of the 60's and it's influence can be seen in many other films and TV shows. We spend some time with our youth correspondent Otto discussing it's impact and the meaning it was trying to convey to the viewer. There's a lot to unpack and this is a little bit of an extra long episode as we also review some snacks and a number of ciders that the adults enjoyed along the way.

Six different ciders were sampled during the 2+ hour long space adventure including ciders from: Aspall Blush Cyder (UK), Bull Run Cider (OR), Seattle Cider Co (WA), and Bauman's Cider Co (OR). Give the episode a listen to hear us discuss these, what cider is, and how many apple varieties there are.

Here we are with a new installment of Movie And A Beer and this time around it's the 2025 horror/family drama Death of a Unicorn. Follow the pharma-bro's family as they discover a new and exciting drug that can cure all. Staring Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, and Richard E. Grant, the cast really does an excellent portrayal of the ultra rich vs. nature and common sense. It's a great film that has lots of great humor sprinkled into the story to help you feel sorry for the unicorns and not so much for us humans.

We were lucky and had a couple of winners with this and first up was a British style lager from Machine House (WA) that was decidedly different, and the second was a seasonal hazy IPA from Hopworks Brewery that wasn't too deep or forward in it's flavor profile. Give the episode a listen to hear us discuss these beers and what can make a beer hazy.

On this most layered episode of Movie And A Beer, we experienced Inception, the 2010 sci-fi dream inspired film by Christopher Nolan that involved going into others dreams, many layers deep, to plant an idea. We were lucky enough to have our old friend Randal and Otto, our youth correspondent along for the ride. During the discussion we cover differences between dreams and reality, movies and film, and what kind of dreams we have in conjunction to the snacks and some beverages we sampled along the way.

For the beers we sipped, both went exceptionally well and added layers of complexity to the already crazy story being told on the screen. The first was a dark lager from Gold Dot Beer (OR) and the second was a Black IPA (actually it was red in color) from Commensal Fermentation (OR). We did select these based on can art and what styles they represented, and in doing so, completed our inception of drinking good beers with a strange and crazy film. Give the episode a listen to hear about these beers, the snacks, and our take on the complexities of dreams.

On this thought provoking episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss Mickey 17, the 2025 science fiction black comedy film written, produced, and directed by Bong Joon Ho (Parasite) that was based on the 2022 novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. Starring Robert Pattinson as Mickey, a down on his luck guy who escapes his problems by becoming an expendable (clone), he's one of a kind over and over and one of the most important parts of the expedition to colonize the ice world Niflheim. The movie follows the journey and the problems that Mickey helps the fellow explorers overcome.

The three beers we enjoyed with this movie were based on both their style (clone beer), name, and can art. We had a Mexican Style Lager from Recluse Brew Works (WA), a hazy IPA from Ruse Brewing (OR), and finally an imperial stout from Block 15 Brewing (OR). Give the episode a listen to hear about these, and the moral and ethical questions raised in this great sci-fi movie.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer we discuss the recent Wes Anderson movie, Asteroid City. While this movie is about a play, it switches back and forth between the actual play and the production of the play, and the writing of the play and screen testing with poignant dialogue and sparce settings. Primarily character driven with some minor plot points push along the 1950's story about a small town's celebration of science and the inventions of some young scientists. The list of actors in this great movie is long and deep and it shows in their scenes.

We were lucky enough to have three different beers along the way with each of the acts and discuss their relationship to the movie. The first was a lager from Yovu Beer (OR), the second was a hazy IPA from Fair State Brewing Cooperative (MN), and we finished off the third act with a smoothy sour from Great Notion Brewing (OR). Give the episode a listen to hear about these beers and our take on this most interesting approach to story telling.

On this jungle exploring episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the rather farcical action flick Tropic Thunder. With an excellent cast of actors portraying actors portraying stereotypes we expect from Hollywood, this movie achieves what few only hope too, in that it pulls off making fun of itself without taking itself too seriously. Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. are the main protagonist(s) whom exemplify the worst parts of being an "A-Lister" effectively while the supporting cast bring it all together.

Along the way we also sampled three beers which brought different profiles and abilities to our tastebuds. The first two were lagers from Old Town Brewing (OR), and Baerlic Brewing (OR), while the third was a wild ale from Funky Fauna (OR). On this most frightful episode of Movie And A Beer, we review the recently released streaming film The Parenting. Directed by Craig Johnson with the screenplay by Kent Sublette, the movie starts out in 1983 providing a backdrop for the spooky vibes and monsters that show up later on in the film. Starring a number of talented actors, the story is a great blend between the horror and comedy genres. The story, while somewhat believable takes you along the path of discovery and forgiveness in a meaningful way.

The beers we tried and reviewed were also somewhat tasty and went along well with the suspense and horror action on the screen. First up was a Cream Ale by Living Haus (OR) and second up was a West Coast India Pale Ale from Irrelevant Beer (WA). Give the episode a listen to hear more about these beers and this great movie.

On this most epic spoof of a space comedy episode of Movie And A Beer, we most lovingly enjoyed Spaceballs, the Mel Brooks film from 1987. This is one of the best spoof movies that is out there, it uses all kinds/types of humor to make fun of and laugh along with the audience references to pop culture, sci-fi movies and TV shows, and just about anything else that was relevant at the time. While the film's humor is centered around that, the story and acting were quite simple and straight forward without a lot of confusion.

The two beers we had while watching this movie were both amber beers. An amber lager from Obelisk Brewing (OR) out in Astoria and the other was an amber ale from Commensal Fermentation (OR) here in Portland. They were both similar in some way, but different in others. Just like this film. Give the episode a listen to learn more about the beers and our thoughts on this comedy time capsule.

On this cold weather survival and hunting expedition of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the wonderful black and white (sort of) silent film Hundreds of Beavers. This comedy was created using a super low budget, amazing physical action, and lots of talented post-production effects. The film’s writer, director, editor, and main visual effects artist Mike Cheslik has provided the viewer with an experience that should be shared with a wide audience. Storytelling without much dialogue is along forgotten skill that he masters with the characters on the screen.

We discuss a couple of great beers along the way with this film, a black lager from Oak Union (OR), and a peanut butter milk stout from Belching Beaver Brewing (OR). Both were excellent choices for this film but we all tended to enjoy one more than the other. Give the episode a listen to hear about this and many other fascinating facts about distilling applejack and other funny facts about mascots.

As we look back on one of the better stand-alone MCU films on this episode of Movie And A Beer, we celebrate Asgard's destruction with Thor Ragnarok. Directed by Taika Waititi, this film brings in a delicious mix of humor with super-hero non-stop action and great actors supporting a simple, but humble hero's journey to save his people. The character Thor has a long and rough journey to find himself and his true powers while facing new challenges. You don't necessarily have to have watched the other MCU films prior to this one as the story stands alone for the most part, but there are a few parts that might not make much sense if you don't.

We did have a couple of gluten free beers from Evasion Brewing (OR), a fruited ale and blood-orange IPA that went exceptionally well with the movie. We do discuss what makes a gluten free beer and how difficult it is to make one that actually tastes like beer (like these do). Give the episode a listen to hear more about that and the MCU.

On this historically accurate episode of Movie And A Beer, we explore the 1992 film A League Of Their Own, which is about the woman's baseball league that was formed during WWII. It's directed by Penny Marshall and includes an amazing cast of actors, it follows a team of women who prove that they have what it takes to play ball in America. We also include some discussion about SheBrew, an annual female-identified brewing competition and celebration that's taking place in March. There are parallels between the empowerment portrayed in this incredible film and with the beer industry.

Honoring female brewers is something that should be done year round and we selected a couple of rock-stars to sample beers from. Steeplejack Brewing with a Dusseldorfer Style Alt Bier and Grand Fir Brewing with a great Bohemian Style Pilsner. Both were delicious and we do discuss the origins and styles during the episode.

We at Movie And A Beer have found ourselves enjoying the 2005 futuristic comedy known as Idiocracy while making a concerted effort to convince each other that this is a reality that could never come about. The film itself is great, the acting and comedy are on point, the realities of big corporate ownership of the government and information that is taken for granted starts to hit a little close to home in the movie for us. We did discuss a bit in our review about society and technology and the 'have vs. have-nots' type of dystopia that's so common with futuristic stories like this one but all agreed that everyone should find and enjoy this film, even if it's really close to what's happening in our own society today.

The beers we sampled were of the 'dark' variety, a black lager from Cerveceria Norte (OR) and a black ale from Holy Mountain Brewing (WA) in Seattle. Both went surprisingly well with the film but provided a slightly different approach to the roasted qualities they included. Give the episode a listen to hear more about this and our take on the future and what it might hold for us.

As we venture into the past with a new episode of Movie And A Beer featuring The Royal Tenenbaums, there's much discussion on Wes Anderson's approach to filmmaking and the way in which this film provides insight into dysfunctional families and self-centered people whom seem stuck due to their own self destructive behaviors. This film is entertaining with an amazing ensemble cast of talented actors, great sound design and music, great design and visual appeal. However, there are some things that are hard to overlook and we dive into this in some detail in our discussion.

We also had a couple of amazing beers to go along with this film that were purchased at Chill N'FIll. The first was a NW style red ale from Stoup Brewing (WA), and the second was a sour IPA from Evil Twin Brewing (NY). Both tasted great and provided a pleasant backdrop to the sometimes depressing story on the screen.

As we imagine ourselves back in the 80's when creature features and bad puppetry were at their peak, Movie And A Beer discovered a strange secret Xmas film that was made in 2024 that fits the bill in Frankie Freako, Written and directed by Steven Kostanski, it follows Connor, a number crunching square who's been given permission to let lose while his wife is out of town for the weekend. Paying homage to the puppetry horror films of the past, Connor calls a late-night party hotline that promises out-of-this-world fun. Once the mayhem beings, he must battle the pint-sized forces of evil unleashed through his phone line, led by the maniacal rock n’ roll goblin FRANKIE FREAKO.

While the film was hard to swallow in it's shallow story, the two beers we had while watching it were not. We enjoyed an English Bitter from Obelisk Beer (OR), and a Fruited Sour Gose from Abomination Brewing (CT). Both had their merits, but one was outstanding above all else. Listen into the episode to hear more about these beers, beer engines, and salt.

On our third and final installment of "What kind of zombie is this?" we at Movie And A Beer enjoyed the 2016 Korean horror film Train To Busan. While the movie does a great job of portraying the tension and horror of a zombie outbreak, it also includes some parallels with the social standings and class attitudes that exist within Korean society. It follows a well-to-do fund manager who's neglected daughter convinces her father to take her to visit her estranged mother who lives in Busan via train. The outbreak provides the father with the opportunity to discover what really matters as a human, not just money and prestige.

Along for the ride, we sampled a variety of flavored Makgulli (rice wine with lactose) and a couple of Sojus (rice wine). These were both surprising and enjoyable as the film was. Give the episode a listen to hear more about rice wines and other Korean drinks and our take on how these foreign films are successful in using zombies as a story telling backdrop.

On this second installment of "what kind of Zombie are they", Movie And A Beer explores Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, a Japanese buddy horror film that takes place during a zombie apocalypse in Tokyo. It follows Akira Tendo, a worker drone who's existence is only driven by his sadistic boss. Figuring out he no longer has to go to work, Akira discovers he can actually live his life to the fullest. The action and storytelling are well done, there is some manga style adaptation to the film towards the end, so if you're a fan of that, this movie is for you.

We had a couple of decent beers with this movie as well. A Japanese rice lager from Crux Fermentation Project (OR), and a robust porter from Little Beast Brewing (OR). Both were pleasant but we did find one was a bit more on-point for the action on the screen. Give this episode a listen to hear about what makes a robust porter "robust" and a brief discussion on adjunct lagering.

On this zombie driven episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched Apocalipsis Z: El principio del fin, a 2024 Spanish zombie action film staring Francisco Ortiz as Manel. He's a regular guy (lawyer and engineer) trying to make his way through grief and the zombie apocalypse with his wife's cat, Lúculo who represents all that he's fighting for. This isn't your typical horror film, it wouldn't even get a R rating here in the states. It's extremely well directed, written, acted, and shot and tells a great story without relying on the tropes usually associated with zombie films.

We did have a couple of amazing beers with this film as well. A west coast IPA from Boneyard Brewing (OR) and a CDA or Black IPA from ColdFire Brewing (OR). Both were exceptional in their flavor profiles and we really loved them along with this film. Give the episode a listen to hear more about CDA's and the importance of balance in beers.

On this late 80's episode of Movie And A Beer we watched Miracle Mile, a film about an unlucky guy who first meets the love of his life at the Labara Tarpits Museum (in LA), plays some jazz music for her at a concert, then oversleeps his date later that night only to discover the world's ending in an hour. What does he do? He of course goes to save the girl just to be caught up in a tangled mess of poor decisions and the world ending.

While that might sound like a huge mess to wade through, the film does hold our interest and we had a couple of amazing beers to sip along the way. First was a collab Fest beer by Gold Dot and Hetty Alice, and the second was an American Brown from now defunct Mt. Tabor Brewing. Listen in for some re-write recommendations and our thoughts on these two exceptional beers.

We welcome episode 150 of the Movie And A Beer podcast with a delightful thriller movie The Wrath of Becky, which borrows from it's predecessors in the genre with the simple story, excellent acting, and overall appeal to crossover humor, horror, and thriller/revenge films. "You killed my dog..." as a phrase comes to mind. Becky is a distraught teenager trying to find her way through life after a tragic set of events and now is faced with another set of unfortunate circumstances which lead her down a path of revenge and hate.

While the movie proved that it could punch above it's weight, the two seasonal beers we had, first a pumpkin ale from Grains of Wrath (WA), and a stout from Culmination Brewing (OR) both didn't perform as well as expected with the film. Listen in as we discuss pumpkin spice, stouts and how sequels can be better than their first.

We had a couple of great beers with this film, a West Coast style lager from Funky Fauna (OR), and a Czech Dark Lager from Wayfinder. Both went really well and we discuss what the decoction method in brewing is during the episode. Give it a listen to hear more.

He makes fast friends with his teammates and goes on a number of amazing journeys and faces the Beast to retrieve his fathers signed baseball.

We were lucky to try a couple of beers that were related to both baseball and things from our childhood. An imperial/double IPA from Chapman Brewing (CA) with some cool-aid like vibes and from Stormbreaker Brewing (OR) the official beer (IPA) of the Portland Pickles baseball team. Listen in on the episode to hear about this great story and these beers.

On this action packed foreign film episode of Movie And A Beer we watched Kill, a recent movie out of India with 90 minutes of knife wielding mania. We sampled a couple of excellent pale ales for this movie, one from Olympia WA by Ilk Beer and the second was by Ruse Brewing (OR). Both were tasty, exemplified the style, and had lots to offer, but one really did go better than the other. Give the episode a listen to hear about this often overlooked beer style and our thoughts on this great action film.

With excellent production quality and writing, this movie provides great entertainment and a positive message to the audience of acceptance of one-self and others.

We were super lucky to find a couple of local beers from Gigantic Brewing (OR) that featured local drag legends, Darcelle (Blond IPA) and a Beermosa by Poison Waters. On this July 4th nature documentary adjacent installment of Movie And A Beer, we enjoyed the peaceful serenity of the movie Sasquatch Sunset along with our coastal friend Jason whom once again, provides us with some amazing insight and discourse. This somewhat controversial film follows the life of a sasquatch family over the course of a year in the wilds. With potty humor, beautiful cinematography, and a breathtaking soundtrack, this film is definitely worth your while.

We sought out a couple of beers to sip with this amazing piece of film. First was a Yeti variation from Great Divide Brewing (CO) and the other was a simple and cheap American Lager from 10 Barrel Brewing (OR). Both were exceptional, but one was a clear crowd favorite. Give the episode a listen to hear why and share with us the excitement of this film.

Here we are, another flashback to the 80's episode of Movie And A Beer! This time around it's Weird Science, a John Hughes coming of age film about a couple of high school misfit nerds who use their computer to create/simulate their perfect woman "Lisa". She's played by Kelly LeBrock who turns their world upside down in just a few days. This movie doesn't hold up well but it is worth watching as it's a time capsule back to 1985 in suburban America.

We were really fortunate to have both Otto and Randal as guests hosts for this episode and there were pretzels to enjoy along the way besides the two beers that some of us enjoyed. The first beer was a Helles from Bizarre Brewing (WA) and the second was an IPA from Von Ebert Brewing (OR). Both went well, the snacks were on point, and the discussion was fun. On this episode of Movie And A Beer we bring together an interesting set of plot twists and turn with the all up in your face violent revenge film in Boy Kills World. Starring Bill Skarsgård as the mute (deaf and unable to speak) child who was raised to become a killer and take revenge for his families murder, he slowly and sure comes to realize that not all things from his past are as he remembers and that he may be doing the wrong things for the wrong person.

We enjoyed a couple of beers based on their can art and names as they related to this film, however one went way better than the other. A Mexican lager from Level (OR) and a dry hopped pale ale from Oak Union (OR). Give the episode a listen to hear which was the better and learn a few things about this style of beer.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer we had a special guest host with us to experience an amazing time traveling artistic masterpiece, La Jetée. Released in 1962 by French director Chris Marker it consists of almost entirely still black and white photos, and tells the stable time loop story of a post-nuclear war experiment in time travel. It is 28 minutes long but holds your attention through calming visuals and narration. The more recent movie and TV show 12 Monkies were both based off of this short film.

We selected a couple of craft ciders to sip along with this great story, one was imported from France and the other was produced by Shilling Cider (WA). One of them really worked along with the film while the other, not so much. Give the episode a listen to hear more about this and the use of narrative in film!

The film is really well done and surprisingly entertaining from start to finish. AND it's also based on true/real events that was recently declassified from the papers of Winston Churchill, so double bonus.

We were lucky to have a British brown ale from Newcastle to start the movie with, and then we moved onto an Extra Pale Ale by Alvarado Street (CA) which heightened the excitement on the screen. We enjoyed a couple of phenomenal local beers along with the film. First was a Pilsner from Everybody's Brewing (WA), and the second was a hazy IPA from VICE beer (WA). Both were amazing in their own ways, give the episode a listen to hear about them, the brewing process, and some insights into the use of the chase scene in other films.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer we're going deep into the heart of Texas with the documentary Boys State. It follows the program of the American Legion developed from the concept that youth should be offered a better perspective of the practical operation of government; that the individual is an integral part, and commensurately responsible, for the character and success of his government. So, spend a week with 1000+ 17 year old kids on the UT at Austin campus for a week. We do dig into the concept of the film and our thoughts on how the topic was presented and concluded it's worth watching if you're interested in politics, but beyond that, it's pretty dry.

Along with the youth on the screen, we decided to first go with a Non-Alcoholic beer from Athletic Brewing (CT) to salute their efforts, and then followed it up with a shaman-inspired cold-red-IPA from Oak Union Brewing (OR). Give the episode a listen to hear more about these and learn a few things about what makes a good documentary.

We had a great time watching this and sipping a British beer from Fullers and an ESB by local brewery Away Days (OR). We found the aspects of this film interesting in how one might interpret who's actually the 'damsel' in it.

Along the way we also had a couple of interesting locally produced beers to sip. A soft IPA from Kings and Daughters Brewing (OR), and a Mexican lager from Gigantic Brewing (OR). We were lucky and picked a couple of great beers based on both can artwork and the relationship to the film. The first was a milk-stout from Left Hand Brewing (CO) and it's not hard to figure out why we picked that, considering the main character is missing their left hand, and then a west coast style IPA from Grains of Wrath (WA) Brewing that lent itself to the intensity of the film. On this day Movie And A Beer watched a film that takes place in1993, where a cynical weatherman named Phil relives his life over and over and over in Groundhog Day, and while we enjoyed this comedic film staring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, we found that even if he relives his life a 1000 times, he just doesn't seem to get it right.

There were a couple of beers that we brought along for this journey through time, a British Pale from Away Days Brewing (OR) and the other, an IPA from Breakside Brewing (OR). While one was pleasant, the other reminded us of the film as it tries to do the same thing over and over, yet slightly different each time, and yet still doesn't seem to quite get it right. With such amazing action, we just had to pick a couple of strong flavored IPA's to sip along the way. As you can imagine, the comedy is quick and witty. We decided to go with a couple of locally produced beers that would go along for the ride. The adults in the room did have the chance to enjoy a couple of lighter beers with this most classic of movies from Leinenkugel's (WI) and Ferment Brewing (OR). Give the episode a listen to hear which went better, and what snacks might be best to enjoy with it.

On this really SPICY episode of Movie And A Beer we watched Spice World, the late 1990's extended music video/film that features the Spice Girls music group. Based in London England, Spice World follows the girls as they prepare for their debut music performance at the Royal Albert Hall. While it's shallow and dumb, it's also funny and sincere and holds up over the years. Girl Power!

The beers we had during the film were both a success like the Spice Girls, as well as a failure, like the movie. One was really good, the other really heat struck and horrible. They were from Old Town Brewing (OR), and Woodland Empire Ale Craft (ID). Give the episode a listen and learn why you shouldn't buy cheap beer off the shelf.

On this challenging episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched, and experienced Taxidermia, the 2006 Hungarian surrealist comedy-drama horror film directed and co-written by György Pálfi. This will challenge you, you have been warned. It follows three generations of men from the same family and how they fit into and deal with life in Hungary from WW2 to current day. We didn't know what to expect, and boy, this was one hell of a trip.

The beers we got were purchased at Johns Marketplace in SE Portland and the two American Pilsners were from Woodland Empire Ale Craft (ID) and Old Town Brewing (OR). One was pretty decent and matched the vibe, while the other was heat struck and horrible, like the visuals. Listen in to learn which is which.

We're all fans of the classic animated cartoons and characters of our youth and Who Framed Roger Rabbit brings them all together in a fun who-done-it murder mystery. This movie brings live action and animation together in a near-seamless visual story. Staring Bob Hoskins as private eye Eddie Valiant who gets tangled up in a cartoon on human instance of murder.

The beers we enjoyed with this wonderous animated-cum-live-action drama were based off of the can designs. The first was a pale ale from HenHouse Brewing (CA) and the second was an IPA from Ruse Brewing. Both were old beers to match this old movie, but one really stood out. Give the episode a listen to hear why.

If you're a fan of animated films, you must go see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and be ready to have your multi-verse socks blown off. Following the previous Spider-Man animated film, this time around Miles and Gwen both face their choices head on and realize that they don't have to follow everyone else. There are consequences to this choice, but they both are willing to take that chance.

We were able to watch this at Cinema 21 here in Portland OR, and this is one of the local theaters that provides draft beer as a concession. We had their house Cinema 21 Lager and Kolsh from Zoiglhaus (OR). Both went well, both managed to stand up to the chaos on the screen. Give this episode a listen to hear about some great products that we would like to pursue in alternative time-lines.

Sisu is one of the best films we've watched so far this year, Finnish or otherwise. We at Movie And A Beer believe that one can only understand what Sisu is if you experience it for yourself. So, be prepared for a WWII crazy slow story about a man, his dog, and some gold.

While the film is broken down into chapters that help guide you through the story, the beers we tried were both classic and to the point, just as this film is. The first was a Pale Ale from Stoup Brewing (WA), and the second was an IPA from Living Haus Brewing (OR). Listen to the episode to hear why one stood out more than the other.

Regardless if you believe in vampires or not, you have to believe in Nick Cage as Count Dracula and Nicholas Hoult his familiar, R. M. Renfield, in this wonderful horror-comedy titled Renfield. It's got plenty of site gags and excessive gore, it also provides an interesting introspective on taking responsibility for your actions and taking control of your life in trying to get out of a toxic relationship with one's boss.

The beers were selected based on can art, and we enjoyed an Extra Hoppy Belgian Style Pale Ale from Jester King (TX) and a Sour Ale Fruited Gose from Nightmare Brewing (NY). Both were decent, one provided a familiar complexity that the acting provided. Listen in to hear which and why.

There is Honor Among Thieves in some D&D games, where as others, not so much. We were lucky enough to have most of our group that we play with together to watch this movie at the LivingRoom Theater here in Portland and we all enjoyed it as much as anticipated. While the characters often bent the rules of the game in some instances, it did stay pretty close to the 'core feel' of the game.

The theater had a number of different beers available on draft and while none of them were 'new' to us, we certainly enjoyed them before and during the film. They included local beers from Occidental Brewing (OR), Laurelwood Brewing (OR), Ft. George Brewing (OR), and Pfriem Brewing (OR). Give this episode a listen to hear about how much rule bending went on and what beers you might find and enjoy during it as well.

On this most challenging pseudo documentary cum master class on filmmaking episode of Movie And A Beer, we delve into The Five Obstructions, a Lars von Trier vehicle where he challenges his mentor Jorgen Leth to remake his classic black and white experimental film, The Perfect Human five times with different rules or obstructions.

We decided to go with a similar approach to the beer we tried while watching this strange film, using IPA as the primary style, and exploring four differing sub-classifications of it. The IPAs were from Lagunitas Brewing (CA), Bells Brewing (MI), Sweetwater Brewing (GA), Gigantic Brewing (OR), and Ninkasi Brewing (OR). Each provided a different perspective on the overall style, but we enjoyed one of them way more than the others. Give the episode a listen to hear why.

We've traveled back to the era of King Author and his knights of the round table to partake in the quest for the Holy Grail. Monty Python does one hell of a funny sketch, and in 1975 they outdid themselves with this wonderfully funny sketch based full length movie, The Holy Grail. There's many things that one could choose to drink while watching this wonderous masterpiece, and we believe we answered wisely.

We partook in a cider from Ten Towers Cider Co. (OR), a triple dry hopped hazy Imperial IPA from Androit Theory (VA), a vière from Gallia Sauvages (FR), and a red ale from Block 15 (OR). All went exceptionally well, but one stood out amongst the insults and laughter more than the others did. Listen in to hear which one and why.

When you think of Nick Cage and John Travolta acting like each other, it wouldn't be much of a stretch as they demonstrate in Face/Off, the 1997 John Woo production that has more sparks, explosions, and references to faces than humanly possible in one film. Although we tried to suspend all belief in reality while watching this one, it's a testament to the courage to tell a crazy story with even crazier actors.

We were able to sip on a couple of IPA's during this film, participating in a little East vs. West coast approach. The East was represented by Commonwealth Brewing (VA) and the West was from Upright Brewing (OR). There is a surprise on which beer was better, along with some surprise analysis of the film, so give the episode a listen to learn more.

We traveled to the far East for this episode of Movie And A Beer to explore one of the greatest animated films of all time, one that abruptly changed what we think cartoons could be. Akira is by far one of the most influential animated films from the late 1980's to come out of Japan. It tells a simple story of greed, choice, friendship, and power through a visually stunning futuristic landscape of "Neo-Tokyo".  We shared a couple of imported beers that were also fun and different than what we usually consume while watching films.

The Asian inspired (imported) beers were a red ale and a citrus infused pale ale, both with tea like qualities and a new(er) approach to the standard flavors we are used too. Give the episode a listen to hear about this amazing film and what beers might go best with it.

It's that time of year to celebrate all things Irish, and with this episode, we embrace the shamrock in all of us with The Guard. This is a great film to learn about Irish culture and life in a small coastal town from the perspective of a 'guarda' or 'policeman'. Starring Brendan Gleeson as the rude cop and Don Cheadle as an American FBI agent forced to work a drug smuggling case with him.

We really enjoyed a couple of imported Irish beers. A Wexford nitro cream ale and a O'Hara's stout. Give the episode a listen to hear all about those and who we'd pick to play the guard in a remake.

On this most excellent arm wrestling 80's nostalgia driven episode, we watched Over The Top, a Silvester Stallone vehicle with more than just his 10 year old kid's life at stake. To go along with this high-stakes adventure, we enlisted the help of a couple of beers that you might find in a local truck stop.

Both beers were purchased at a local grocery store, one being a Miller Lite and the other a Montucky Cold Snacks (MT). Both went exceptionally well with the poor acting and plot holes, give the episode a listen to hear who we'd love to see in the remake!

On this surfer and bank robbing episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched Point Break, a classic 1990's action film by Kathryn Bigelow, starring Keanu Reeves as Johnny Utah, a new FBI agent on his first assignment going up against a gang of bank robbers know as the Dead Presidents. But this is no ordinary group of robbers. They're surfers -- led by the charismatic Bodhi (Patrick Swayze). We really loved this classic action flick and the beers we enjoyed with it.

The two pale ales we picked were from Georgetown Brewing (WA) and Black Plague Brewing (CA). While one was a bit sharp like Johnny was at the start of his undercover work, the other was really well rounded and felt the waves and was able to surf with the best of them at the end. Give the episode a listen to hear which was which.

We went back to 1947 and recorded the episode using an approach like they would have back then, so it's like listening to a radio broadcast to give it more realism. The Lady from Shanghai is an Orson Welles film staring Rita Hayworth, Orson Welles, Everett Sloane, and Glenn Anders in a complex film Noir setting that takes you on a cruise from New York to San Francisco. A murder plot drives this classic with an interesting twist at the end.

The beers we selected for this were being produced back then and it's quite possible that the scene's that took place in bars in both NYC and SF, the actors could have been drinking them. Narragansett (RI) and Anchor Steam (CA) are quite classic like the film, give the podcast to hear more about them.

This is one of the longest films we've ever watched for the podcast, and we're glad we did so. RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) is a foreign film covering a 'fictional' meeting between Raj and Bheem, revolutionaries that were seeking different goals, but through the strength of friendship, they overcome their challenges.

We picked out some IPA's to enjoy from Wayfinder Brewing (OR),  Hetty Alice (OR), and Beachwood Brewing (CA). Give the episode a listen to hear about the history of the IPA and how these beers went with this amazing film.

On this latest installment of Movie And A Beer, we bring in the Chinese Lunar New Year and celebrate with a review of the critically acclaimed House Of Flying Daggers and imbibe on a few imported lagers from China and a celebratory shot of locally produced Baijiu (Bia-Joe). The story follows political intrigue and a blossoming romance between a sheriff and a spy sent to lure him to capture. With many plot twists and turns, not to mention the many choreographed fight scenes, this is one of the best Chinese films to come to America on wide theatrical release.

We enjoyed a couple of excellent imported lagers from China, specifically Tsingtao and Yanjing which both went really well with the film. Give the episode a listen to hear about our take on the use of color, sound, and visual story telling and how these beers fit right in along with them.

On this super-hero driven episode of Movie And A Beer we watched the much delayed film Black Widow and had a couple of non-alcoholic beverages in celebration of "Dry January", a hop-water and a N/A (alcohol reduced) IPA. If you're a fan of Marvel films, then this is up your alley. It doesn't work too well as a stand-alone film with a weak plot and story. The actors did the best with what they had, so nothing against them.

The drinks we tried during the movie were a hop-infused sparkling water from Pelican Brewing (OR), and an alcohol-reduced (.5% ABV) IPA from Boulevard Brewing (KS). One was just water, the other was a beer. Give the episode a listen to learn about these and how much CGI we think went into the making of this movie.

On this most excellent "get the gang back together" episode of Movie And A Beer, we jam out to the stylings of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World while sipping down a couple of great cheap beers. We follow Scott as he learns to be true to himself and others while battling the league of evil ex's and learn how easy it is to defeat someone with the power of veganism.

The beers we had with this film were an American lager called Old German from Pittsburgh Brewing (PA), and the second was a locally brewed Helles from Occidental Brewing (OR). Give this episode a listen to hear all about these beers and our thoughts on this great graphic novel to screen adaptation.

On this most holiday festive episode of Movie And A Beer, we enjoyed The Muppet Christmas Carol and a couple of seasonal beers along the way. Starring Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge and a supporting cast of Muppets (Kermit, Ms. Piggy, Beaker, Animal, etc), the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future tell the Dickens tale in a kid friendly and educational way.

The two beers we had along the way were a Seasonal Gnome beer from Oakshire Brewing in Eugene OR, and the other was a Holiday Spice Ale from Grains of Wrath Brewing, Camas WA. Both went well, one had a slightly more festive approach than the other. Give this great holiday episode a listen to learn more.

On this holiday tale episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched a great Norwegian film Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale which brings a new light to the origin story of good old St. Nick. While this isn't a 'horror' film per-se, nor is it a kid appropriate movie, it definitely utilizes great writing, acting, and production to tell a great holiday tale about Santa and what he really is.

We enjoyed a couple of seasonal beers with it, first was a hoppy red from Widmer Brothers Brewing (OR), and the other was a CDA from Pelican Brewing (OR). Both of these were spot on, but one perhaps went a bit better than the other did. Give the episode a listen to hear more about Santa's elves mischievous behaviors and which beer we liked the most.

First up is Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis as officer John McClain battling a bunch of terrorist led by Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman, whom seem to be following the terrorist playbook to their advantage.

The two beers we had during this action flick were pretty good. First up was an IPA from Baerlic Brewing (OR), and the second was a sour ale from JAPAS Cervejaria (IL). Both went well, but one stood out more than the other. Give the episode a listen to learn more about them.

The beers we picked were really interesting and went well with the movie in different ways. One was a classic Vienna Lager from Ft. George Brewing (OR) and the other was a pretty strong IPA from Double Mountain Brewing (OR). Give this great episode a listen to hear about these beers and our take on this amazing film.

On this Halloween special edition of Movie And A Beer, we watched the 1982 classic horror film The Thing by John Carpenter. The story follows the alien creature as it escapes from the nearby Norwegian camp and subsequently takes over the American's encampment, leading to a great cliffhanger. This movie includes some great actors, Peter Maloney, Donald Moffat, Richard Masur, Kurt Russell, and Wilford Brimley.

We had three collaboration beers (such as the alien did to anything alive it encountered), first was a West Coast IPA from Matchless Brewing (WA) and Varietal Beer Co. (WA), second was a traditional IPA from Fremont Brewing (WA) and Burial Brewing (NC), and rounded out with a smoothie sour from Brix City Brewing (NJ) and Abomination Brewing (CT). Give the episode a listen to hear how these beers went with this classic horror film and why you should always remember to burn an alien monster, not just shoot it.

The beers we picked for this episode were "Special" in different ways. The acting is solid, the music is amazing, the story, while a bit shallow, tells a decent story.

We had a couple of interesting beers with this film based on the foods that Elvis liked the most. A banana bread beer and peanut butter & jammy sour. Give the episode a listen to hear if these worked or not.

On this amazingly musical episode of Movie And A Beer we discuss the kid's karaoke film Sing 2. With 36 current and older songs throughout, Sing 2 is an animation fest full of amazing voice acting and shallow story telling. Great for young kids, and for adults that want to watch something and do some karaoke from home.

We enjoyed a couple of great beers while watching this show. First was a Hazy IPA from Level Brewing, followed by a Pilsner from Heater Allen and an English Mild from Block 15. Listen into the episode to hear about these beers and our take on singing along with the film.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the Johannes Roberts reboot of the Resident Evil franchise: Welcome to Raccoon City. This fresh reboot of the well known zombie franchise based on a video game starts at the home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corp. and their genetic experiments on the townspeople of Racoon City. This horror flick has plenty of great special effects, but falls a bit flat on the writing and story.

We enjoyed a couple of great beers while watching, both west coast style IPAs. The first was from Beachwood Brewing (CA) and the second from Ruse Brewing (OR). Give the episode a listen to hear more about these beers and some backstory on the video games the movie is based on.

On this sandworm inspired episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the epic sci-fi adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel Dune by Denis Villeneuve. The film is both visually stunning and the complex characters are portrayed by a wonderful set of actors. While the film follows the trials and tribulations of young Paul Atreides, it attempts to do justice to the issues presented within the novel such as the political, social-economic, and ecological issues the indigenous people of Arrakis face. This film allows the viewer to both engage with the story, and feel the struggles being portrayed on the screen.

We also discuss a few beer options that you might enjoy during the film, and briefly learn what "decoction" is in beer making. So, sit back, and give this episode a listen!

On this western themed No-Shave-November episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched the recently released western Old Henry from director Potsy Ponciroli, and staring Tim Blake Nelson. This film is a classic in the making with an outstanding cast, interesting plot/story, and a traditional approach to the story of a man running from his past.

We also enjoyed a couple of amazing beers during the film which we discuss in some detail. The first was a Golden Ale from Wayfinder Brewing (OR), and the second was a fest bier from Holy Mountain Brewing (WA). Give the episode a listen to hear why these two beers went so well with the film.

On this gory and stout driven episode of Movie And A Beer, we review the recently released rotoscoped animated feature The Spine of Night. This fantasy epic is staged in three main stories being told by the swamp queen Tzod (voiced by Lucy Lawless) and follows the bloom (blue flower of power) and it's influence on mankind.

We enjoyed a couple of stouts (to celebrate international stout day) and an ESB during the film from Guinness, Belching Beaver, and Ferment Brewing. Give the episode a listen to hear our take on these beers and how much they didn't go with the film.

On this scary vampire-themed episode of Movie And A Beer we review the Netflix exclusive Night Teeth and discuss a couple of excellent darker beers to go along with this darker film. It follows Benny, a college-aged wanna-be DJ/Producer, and brother to Jay, an anti-vamp Hispanic gangster in LA.  Benny chauffeurs around Blaire and Zoe around LA from party to party and quickly discovers he's driving around a couple of blood-sucking vampires seeking a night of fun and violence.

We really enjoyed the stouts that we had during the film from Away Days Brewing and Little Beast Brewing. Give the episode a listen to learn about this beer style and how well they went with the visuals.

We explore the beginnings of the 'cabin in the woods' horror genre on this episode of Movie And A Beer with Evil Dead, the 1981 classic film by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, and Richard DeManincor. Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons from the Necronomicon.

There were a couple of outstanding collaboration IPA's that paired up nicely with the gory scenes in the film. The first was a unique double NE IPA from Kings and Daughters with Reubens Brewing, and the second was a standard IPA from Brothers Cascadia and Gigantic Brewing. Give the episode a listen to hear our take on these beers and the film.

On this fun and musical episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched The Muppets Haunted Mansion movie with our youth correspondent Otto. While we did gorge ourselves on candy, popcorn, and butter beer, there was some fun insights into how scary a Muppet ghost really is and how much the human actors must have had while making this musical scary experience.

We also enjoyed some 'seasonal' pumpkin beers from Elysian Brewing and finished it off with an NE IPA from Rogue Brewing. All of the spiced and fall beers were on point, the IPA was a bit of a stretch for us. Give the episode a listen to hear more about these and our fond memories of the Muppet Show's of the past.

On this terror-iffic episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched the 2021 release, Candyman. This film takes place in Chicago 20+ years after the first one and continues the saga of the ghost that haunts the ghetto, seeking justice against those that wronged him (or just anyone that says his name five times).

We picked out a couple of beers from the fridge to enjoy with this film, and luckily both were winners. A Pale Ale from Heater Allen (collab with Notch Brewing) and an imperial IPA from Flatland Brewing that brought in a bit of a surprise ending like the film did. Give the episode a listen to hear more about these and the film.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we review the much anticipated season 2 of the Apple TV show, Ted Lasso and briefly chat about the many beers we enjoyed while binging it. This season brings a lot of depth and insight into the main and secondary characters of the Ted Lasso show. While there are a lot of moral and ethical questions raised during some of the characters' story arc's, there was a definite theme throughout of forgiveness and acceptance of one's faults.

If you choose to binge this show, or watch it week by week as it was meant, be sure to pick a beer or drink that you're going to enjoy, and save something with some pucker for the end, as there's some good surprises in store for you!

For this special short episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched the classic Mel Brooks spoof spectacular Spaceballs while sipping on some fresh hop beers. While the language tends to be more adult than not, the film itself is full of physical slapstick comedy and tons of puns that most young adults would enjoy.

The beers we had with the film were out of the fridge and happened to be a set of "fresh hop" beers from Level Brewing here in Portland. Fresh hop refers to the beer being made with fresh, not dried, hops. This does make the flavor profiles shift a bit towards the 'vegital' profile, which works better with some styles than others. Listen in to hear more about this.

On this LIVE recording of Movie And A Beer from Chill N' Fill here in Portland Oregon, we watched Zoolander as part of their Monday Movie Night and enjoyed a local fresh hop beer from Stormbreaker Brewing. As you might imagine, a comedy full of 1990's actors, models, and superstars has its bright moments, it definitely didn't age well and we had some issues with some of the scenes.

We really enjoyed the beer provided by the staff and afterwords, chatting with Gabi, one of the great employees at Chill N' Fill. The fresh hop Cream Ale from was pretty crushable and we agreed it went pretty well with the movie as would any lighter ale you might pick. Give the episode a listen to hear more about Chill N' Fill and our take on the beer!

Once again on Movie And A Beer we visit the 'Superhero' genre of films with the titular 1989 film Batman. Staring Michael Keaton (Batman), Jack Nicholson (Joker), and Kim Basinger (Vicki Vale). With super cheesy practical effects, and a story focused on the Joker's origin story, this film has a lot of nostalgia and not a lot of plot. Even our youth correspondent Otto agrees, not really that great of a film.

We enjoyed some great snacks and a few beers while watching it from Iron Horse Brewing (a dark multiple-identity ale) and a decent brown from 10 Barrel Brewing. Listen in to the episode to hear about these great beers and how they helped us get through the film.

This time around on Movie And A Beer we review the film No Sudden Move. Steven Soderbergh comes back to the cinema with this 1950's gangster classic. Starring Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, and David Harbour, it takes place in 1954 Detroit where small-time criminals are hired to babysit a family while the husband is forced to steal a document from his boss only to learn that it was a double cross to get something more valuable.

We had a couple of local beers with this film. A Pale Ale from Migration Brewing and a IPA from Full Sail Brewing, both were ok, one went a little better than the other. Give the episode a listen for some insights into these beers and some subtle hints to how the film ends.

On this most patriotic July 4th episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched, discuss, drank beer to America The Motion Picture. An animated comedy and historically based 'Bro' story of the founding of our great country, with lots and lots and lots of artistic liberties. If you're a fan of Drunk History, you'll appreciate the storytelling aspect of this crazy journey through time and for those that are fans of tea, you're outta luck.

We anticipated that this movie would require some beer chugging to get through, and we selected a couple of beers that represented the 'Brits' and 'Merica', specifically from Alesmith Brewing (San Diego) and Stickmen Brewing (Portland). Give the episode a listen and hear all about it.

On this kid friendly episode of Movie And A Beer we watched Luca, a story about sea monsters learning about themselves and how people can accept you even if you're different. The three main characters form an amazing bond of friendship while trying to win a big race with hopes of buying a Vespa.

We also enjoyed a couple of really nice beers to help keep us cool and refreshed during the film. One was a Lager from Good Life Brewing and the other was a NE IPA from New Belgium Brewing. Both provided a pleasant supporting role in our enjoyment of the film. Give this episode a listen to learn more about these beers and some new perspectives on fish.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer we discuss the movie Palm Springs, a 'Groundhog Day' trope stuck in the desert starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti as two nihilists hipsters stuck in a time loop while finding themselves.

We enjoyed a number of beers and selected a few that went well with the movie. Specifically a nice ale from local micro-brewery Away Days Brewing and an IPA from a variety pack (via Costco) by New Belgium Brewing, along with a hard kombucha from JuneShine. Give it a listen to hear more.

We discuss the finer points of proton packs and share our favorite memories and lines from the movie and participated in one of our favorite local podcasts with our youth correspondent Otto and his creation, Movie and a Snack.

The beers gathered for this episode are from across the US. Starting with a neon green kettle sour from Tripping Animals Brewing (FL), followed by a chocolate wheat beer from Weldwerks Brewing (CO), and completing the menage-a-trois with a crazy sludgy fruit cheesecake smoothie/juice beer from Oakshire Brewing (OR). In this mid-life crisis episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the recently released film Nobody staring Bob Odenkirk of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fame as Hutch Mansell, as a retired 'Auditor' that's now going through a crisis of his own making. While the film does have a lot of violence, it's only because it has to happen.

We enjoyed a couple of local IPA's from Ft. George Brewing and Block 15 Brewing and had a bit of a fight-club approach to deciding which won the evening. Listen in as we discuss this 'everyday man's John Wick' approach to fighting and our approach to these beers.

On this exceptional episode of Movie And A Beer, we review the 1996 classic Mars Attacks! and compare three IPA's while laughing away at the crazy antics of the aliens. Mars Attacks! is a spoof on the 1950's era Sci-Fi flick with cheesy special effects and lots of physical comedy to help tell a fun story. The film has a cornucopia of Hollywood elite making the best of the alien invasion trying to escape the impending doom.

We shifted our approach this time around for the beers and picked three IPA's from Elysian Brewing, Ecliptic Brewing, and Ninkasi Brewing that had 'space' related names to compare while watching. While some we had enjoyed two of the three before, there was a surprise among them. Listen in to hear more!

We empathized with the brothers as they gathered their team and trained to become some of the best beer guzzlers in the US.

We enjoyed 4 different German beers while we chuckled our way through the film to include 2 Kolsch and 2 Pilsners. Listen in and hear our take on why these went well with the film, and how you might enjoy drinking your own 'boot' without getting a face full.

Most of them are of the baby boomer generation that either lost their careers, homes, and families during the great recession in 2008 or have chosen to live the nomad lifestyle.

The two beers we enjoyed during the film were a locally made American Adjunct Lager from Grains of Wrath Brewing and an imported red-bean, vanilla, and cocoa stout from Japas Cervejaria. Give the episode a listen to hear our thoughts on this beer and film

We really liked a couple of beers we had while watching Gizmo and his brothers destroy the small town of Kingston Falls (the set to Back to the Future). On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the first few episodes of the hit TV show Ted Lasso. The show stars Jason Sudeikis as the titular Ted Lasso, an American college football coach hired to take over the AFC Richmond (fake) English Soccer club. The series is 10 episodes long and we decided to break up the podcast into two parts as there's just so much to cover and we wanted to do it justices.

We were lucky enough to find a couple of Fullers English beers to enjoy during one of the binges and we discuss why we feel this beer matches up so well with a show about soccer and coaching.  Our thanks go out to local bottle shop 1856 for having these hard-to-find beers in stock!

On this funny episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the classic comedy Caddyshack and a couple of Leichtbiers (or lighter beers) we had while laughing along with this great film. We enjoyed the amazing actors telling the story of Danny Noonan, a struggling golf caddy at the Bushwood Country Club as he tries to raise money for his college education.

The beers were selected based on their low ABV and can designs. The first beer from Lowercase Brewing could easily be confused with a Diet Tab as it's a close rendition to it. While the second one from Chapman Crafted Beer is more standard in the design but has a summery vibe. Listen in on why we picked these lagers and how they went with the film.

On this new episode of Movie And A Beer, we're discussing the historical drama Judas and the Black Messiah that follows William O'Neal, a small time crook who makes a deal with the FBI to infiltrate the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party to gather intelligence activist and leader Fred Hampton. We had a couple of stouts from Lupulin Brewing and Pono Brewing to go along with this great film and one matched up a little better than the other did. On this episode of Movie And A Beer we watched the recent Disney film, Raya and the Last Dragon, with our youth correspondent, Otto. He had a chance to try some really yummy sodas while we got to sip on a few beers. The film follows a young woman's journey to save her people and the last dragon. It really does a great job in representing the importance of trust and why we must learn to trust and respect each other or risk the consequences of our less humane ways.

The two beers from Hopworks and Anderson Valley Brewing provided some great liquid support for the movie, however, we all agreed that just one of them won the day. Otto's sodas were on point also. Give the episode a listen to learn about the film and the refreshments we had.

On this timey-wimey episode of Movie And A Beer, we talk about this crazy time travel over-engineered film from 2004, Primer. It's a story about a couple of friends that stumbled upon the link between gravity and time by accident during one of their garage experiments, and how they abuse the ability to travel back in time to try and fix what's broke. We drank a couple of experimental IPA's during the film which went pretty well considering that they were experiments and didn't take us back in time.

The two experimental IPA's were both pretty good and lent to the viewing experience through exploring what IPA 'can' be. The first was a collaboration from Ecliptic and Wayfinder Brewing and the second was a sour IPA from Evil Twin Brewing. Give the episode a listen to learn more about them, and how broken your brain can get while trying to figure out time travel.

The two beers were a full bodied Scottish ale from Founders Brewing out of Detroit MI, and the other was a Caramel Porter from Cascade Lakes Brewing out of Redmond OR. On this COVID-sode of Movie And A Beer we discuss the recently released film Save Yourselves!, a sort of sci-fi millennial rom-com that fell really flat, along with a couple of strange beers that didn't work as well as they should have. The beers, this time around were good, but not flavors that really go with this type of film. They both traveled a long way to get to Portland to destroy our taste-buds, as the film's best part, the cute aliens, traveled a long way to Earth to consume all ethanol alcohol. The music is 'excellent', the story is 'quaint', the acting is decent, the beers we had were 'Whooah!'

On this pandemic stay-at-home episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched a couple of oldies-but-goodies in celebration of May the 4th (Star Wars unofficial holiday) from the TV cartoon Family Guy - Blue Harvest, which is a spoof on Star Wars Episode 4 (New Hope), and Something Something Something Dark Side, a spoof on Star Wars Episode 5 (The Empire Strikes Back).

While we enjoyed these two wonderful episodes, we enjoyed a few beers that we obtained from a local bar/restaurant (to-go). We discuss the different styles and how they worked and what we recommend for you to enjoy at home during this difficult time.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer we talk about the western film 3:10 to Yuma and the two beers we had during it. This film was directed by James Mangold and filmed in New Mexico. It includes Peter Fonda who was in the original film from 1957.

The story follows outlaw Ben Wade who’s played by Russell Crowe. Ben and his gang terrorize the 1800s Arizona countryside where he frequently targets the Southern Railroad (stagecoach) until he is finally captured. Wade must be brought to trial and taken to federal prison for sentencing and hanging. Dan Evans who's played by Christian Bale volunteers to help take the prisoner to catch the 3:10 train to Yuma. Their relationship is a rough and challenging one throughout the film. Luckily we struck gold with one of the beers selected for this viewing and that brought the story to life.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer we talk about the animated kids film Coco and the three Mexican beers we sampled while watching. We had with us a special guest who's going to be our kids-movie expert (as he's a kid). We all loved the film as it provides a great story and visual exploration into Mexican religious and cultural traditions. The family dynamic that drives the story is one that is relatable to most kids and those chasing their dreams.

We were excited to share this episode with someone that could provide us a real kids' perspective, and he got to discuss his rootbeer that he enjoyed during the film.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the 2019 film Honey Boy which was written by and stars Shia LaBeouf. In the film, he plays James Lort the father to Otis Lort. We discovered that this film is a bit bitter and luckily we had a bitter beer to go with it.

The semi-autobiographical story of Shia is played by two actors, the older one in recovery, Lucas Hedges, and Noah Jupe, the 12-year-old version who's story and life are shared with the audience. Otis is a childhood actor and is just surviving day to day, balancing his chaotic life with a demanding and abusive father. While this is a challenging film to watch, we think it's a good characterization of what it's like to be a young actor and have demanding parents that don't let you be you.

In this episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the 2019 Oscar-nominated film Ford v Ferrari starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale and the four (2 American and 2 Italian) beers we sampled while watching it. The film is a long one, over two hours and fit for young adults and kids that are interested in cars. The film covers the struggles of the Ford Motor Company in the 1950s as they attempted to beat Ferrari in the Le Mans 24 hr. road race.

The two leads develop a strong bond in the film as the learn to trust each other and the cars they are building and experimenting on. While the film does have a lot of racing, there are some memorable moments that made the battle with Ferrari even more fun to watch.

The four beers we sampled were of the lager variety, and we ended up enjoying all of them, with a split decision on who was the best. Listen in on the episode to hear the details and why we feel you should pick something lighter and enjoyable while viewing this great film.

In this installment of Movie And A Beer, we review the recent adaptation of Little Women which is based on the classic novel of the same name, and the beers we enjoyed with it at two different theaters here in Portland Oregon. The story takes place in America during the civil war and follows the March family as the sisters grow up and become adults.

As with all families, they go through lots of traumatic experiences, and this film covers those with an interesting approach to multiple storylines and flashbacks to trace their history and decision making.

We watched this film at the St. Johns Twin Cinemas and Cinema 21 here in Portland. We were able to try a variety of beers and would like to recommend that you find a lighter beer to start with and perhaps move onto a heavier one about midway through, as the film and subject matter become more serious and what you enjoy with it should as well.

In this double episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss a couple of challenging films, Jojo Rabbit and Marriage Story, and the wonderful beers we enjoyed while watching them. First up was Jojo Rabbit, a WWII comedy/satire that follows the ups and downs of a young 10-year-old boy Jojo during the end of the war and how his view of the Jews and the Nazi regime has been wrong all along. Written and directed by Taika Waititi, the film does have some light-hearted moments, but it's not all fun and games for young Jojo.

We enjoyed some German beers (imports) while watching this film, we highly recommend that you find a Kolsch, or Kolsch style beer to enjoy as it's a lighter film and sipping on a refreshing beverage that is lighter matched up closely.

The second film we review is Marriage Story, a film by Noah Baumbach that covers a messy divorce of an actress played by Scarlett Johansson and her director husband played by Adam Driver. This is what we would call a slow trainwreck that you're forced to watch for over two hours. While the beers we tried and enjoyed were worth the time spent, we have some questions and concerns about this film and how hard it is to watch.

We purchased a few Irish beers to sample (Guinness, Smithwicks, and Harps) and an American Milk Stout from Left Hand Brewing to contrast against those. We discuss each briefly and highly recommend that you find something you'll enjoy while watching regardless of its origin - foreign or domestic.

In this episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the WW1 film 1917 by Sam Mendez. A challenging and visually stunning film based in 1917 that follows a couple of soldiers as they traverse the German front line to deliver an important letter to another British military unit.

We were able to enjoy this movie at the St. Johns Twin Cinemas here in Portland and enjoyed a couple of small pitchers of Ex Novo's Hoppy Pilsner. We all enjoyed this film but had some reservations about the beer.

In this episode of Movie And A Beer, we review the film Uncut Gems. This is a great film that follows a jewelry dealer in New York in 2012 as he gambles everything on that 'big win'.

There are guest appearances by professional (NBA) basketball players and a few well-known Hollywood actors to support an amazing script/story and film. With the film, we enjoyed a locally produced beer, New England/Juicy IPA Orange Whip by Fortside Brewing in Vancouver WA.

In this episode of Movie And A Beer, we review Parasite, a dark comedy from South Korean (foreign film with subtitles), and briefly discuss the beers we drank at Cinema 21 in Portland OR while watching it.

This is one of the best movies of the past few years that we've seen. Amazing storytelling, amazing acting, plot twists, an examination of the society, and how rich and poor treat each other.

In this episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss Zombieland Doubletap, a followup film to the first Zombieland that came out 10 years ago. We watched this film and enjoyed three different beers at the Livingroom Theaters in downtown Portland OR.

We really enjoyed this "zom-bedy" (zombie comedy) as the writing and actors don't take themselves too seriously. They break the fourth wall occasionally and even make fun of the way they portray zombies. Overall a fun film and the beers we picked to go with it were spot on.

In this episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the Joker, a film the three of us watched at Regal Cinemas at the Fox Tower in downtown Portland OR. We also discuss each of the beers we enjoyed while screening the film.

This comic book movie isn’t as much of a superhero film that is a retelling of a comic book character's origin story. It's a direct homage to the 1970's movies that portrayed society and its faults directly. Director Todd Phillips casts Joaquin Phoenix as a mentally ill professional clown Authur Fleck whose life starts to unravel, leading to the birth of the "Joker".

In this episode of Movie And A Beer, we enjoy Sierra Nevada Brewing's Oktoberfest, a collaboration beer with Bitburger Brewing in Germany. This German-style lager is 6% ABV and is more true to the style than other US brewers make. It is a wonderful full-bodied and mildly sweet beer that was brewed with Bitburger’s custom 'house' yeast and secret hop blend called Siegelhopfen.

As it's the Halloween season, we picked a horror/slasher genre film to watch with this great beer. The Banana Splits came out in 2019 and unfortunately, this movie left us with a sour taste in our mouth. It's about a long-running children's TV show that does live studio tapings and follows a family that attends one of these. Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky are the animatronic characters that perform and are programmed by a mad scientist with the premise that 'The show must go on'. With the cancellation of the show by the network, the robots go crazy and start killing off the audience and other performers and crew.

On this episode of Movie and a Beer, we review Sam Adams ‘76, a new session American Pilsner by the Boston Beer Company. Labeled as 'crushable' or what we refer to as 'sessionable', this lighter (4.7% ABV) lager is a medium-bodied and refreshing take that goes well with most casual beer drinking.

The movie we paired and watched with this beer was Yesterday, directed by Danny Boyle, starring Himesh Patel as Jack Malik, a struggling musician who finds himself being one of only a few people that remembers/knows the Beatles. The movie follows Jack as he realizes that he can become a world-famous musician using the songs of the Beatles. While this is an interesting 'What-If/Rom-Com' film, it's shallow and relies heavily on the music to help the story along.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we first review the Mirror Pond Pale Ale, one of the long-time favorites of the Portland beer scene.  This Pale Ale has been around for over 30 years and provides a consistent and classic approach to this style of beers in the northwest.

We then discuss the three movies we've watched to pair up with this beer to include: The Raid: Redemption, a great martial arts/cop flick; Blade Runner 2014, the film-noir follow up to one of the greatest sci-fi movies in the past 30 years; and finally Back to the Future 2, which continues the saga of Marty McFly and his time-traveling exploits.

On this episode of Movie And A Beer we discuss the music-biopic Rocketman, the story of Sir Elton John's early life and career told through his career and life's experiences while enjoying a wonderful Belgian Trappist beer.

Even if you aren't familiar with his music, you'll enjoy this movie as it touches on the challenges that we all face in life as we grow up, become adults, and 'face the music'. It's got some wonderful acting and signing by Taron Egerton who plays Sir Elton John and highlights the challenges musicians face within the music industry during the 1970-1980's.

In this episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the movie Pokémon Detective Pikachu and what beer we recommend to enjoy while watching this at the theater or at home.

Even if you're not a fan of the Pokémon game, anime, cartoons, manga, films, or characters, we think you'll enjoy this film with your kids (7+ age) or with friends. It has a great visual appeal with amazing CG environments and Pokémon, the story follows a young adult as he deals with the disappearance of a parent and his feelings towards his current place in life. Ryan Reynolds voices Pikachu and brings a lot of support to the sometimes flat acting and storyline.

In this episode, we discuss Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and review a couple of beers that you might enjoy while watching. This is a throwback to the classic Hollywood TV and movie industry covering the 50’s-60’s decades.

While the film’s story centers around the career of TV and film actor Rick Dalton, who’s played by Leonardo DiCaprio and his stunt double, chauffeur and friend Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt, it is more of a historical drama with a fictional story than not.

The plot covers Rick Dalton's career as it rises and falls over the course of two decades and includes a bit of Sharon Tate's career and outcomes with the Manson family.

Discussion of five movies to binge over a weekend and what beer(s) you can enjoy with them. The underlying theme of the movies selected was 'running away from something and personal loss'. While they all have their strengths in story, cinematography, acting, and direction.

Each of these movies can stand alone on their own, but binging them makes it more fun.

Movies discussed:

  • The Balad of Buster Skrugs (2018) This is a great western anthology of six short stories told by the Coen Brothers.
  • Taxi Driver (1976) A classic film by Martin Scorsese. Follows a Taxi Driver that is suffering from insomnia, Travis Bickle, played by Robert De Niro.
  • Run Lola Run (1998) German film starring Franka Potente as Lola who runs across Berlin to seek the help of her father. It retells the story over and over as she makes slightly different decisions each time.
  • Zombieland (2009) This great 'buddy flick' follows a group of four survivors of a zombie apocalypse. The film teaches you to abide by a list of survival rules and zombie-killing strategies with humor and grace.
  • Ex Machina (2014) Sci-Fi film that has robots that are self-aware at different levels and uses one of the characters to test their humanity. Beautiful visuals and use of technology to tell the story.

A brief discussion of the Avengers Endgame movie and how the movie fits into the overall MCU.

We then explore what beers some of the main and secondary super hero's of the story might drink and why to include: Iron Man; Captain American; Hulk; Hawkeye; Black Widow; Thor; Dr. Strange; Falcon; Ant-Man; Wasp; Black Panther; War Machine; Spiderman; and Capt. Marvel.
