Do you think you're controlling? Most people don't. We generally think of a angry, domestically violent-type person who takes their partners phone and stops them from seeing their friends.
But what if I showed you that being controlling is actually a very covert form of manipulation that you might be doing in relationships without even meaning to?!
Today I give three uncommon signs that you might have an issue with control, which is actually a sign of codepenency.
If you're willing to listen to this, then YOU are DOING THE WORK! Congratulations on your self-awareness!!!

Have you noticed the critical voice inside your head? If you are in recovery or are interested in learning more about self-love and self care, this episode is for you. I know there was a time in my life when I was in such denial about my mental health that I didn't even notice the horrid things my critical voice was constantly shouting at me. Those messages had become such commonplace occurences that I had ignored them. But they were still there, behind the scenes, adding to my self-hatred and low self-esteem.
Today I will show you how to identify that critical voice, sometimes called our "critical parent." Where do these voices come from? Are they from childhood?
I will also give you the tools to combat that critical voice and start setting boundaries for more self-love and acceptance within your own body!

Our energy sets our boundaries! This means that boundaries are mostly an inside job. You might not need to even tell the other person with words that you are setting a boundary! We've all been around people who have strong boundaries. They hold the truth inside of them and we know even before talking to them that they won't put up with BS! We can become that type of person if we take the time to sit, listen to our resentments and feelings, and tease out the exact thing that's bugging us. If we do that, the truth emerges and we are able to then proceed with the boundary a lot more smoothly. We also can take time to talk with a neutral friend about the boundary and practice saying as few words as possible to convey our message. We don't need to explain the boundary if we know our own truth within and can validate it for ourselves. Good luck boundary setting with grace! Let me know how it goes.

Do you stay quiet when injustices occur? Or do you voice your concerns in a graceful manner?
Today I share a story about how I stood up for my values by writing an email to my son's school. A shocking thing occured while my son was having freetime, and I wanted to make sure it didn't happen again. I know I can't solve the problems of the world, but maybe I can make better the little corner of the city I live in... maybe I can protect one other child from being porn-exposed at a young age.
I recorded this podcast before I had heard a response from the teachers I emailed. I wanted to be sure that my feelings were raw and real as I recorded it. I had so many fears before I clicked that "send" button and stuck my neck out! I was so fearful of being judged, blamed, or just ignored! Luckily, I can tell you now, I was listened to and action was taken to stop this from happening again! My little email caused a GREAT DEAL of change. I alerted the school about problems I don't think they even knew existed at the elementary level. Grace + Boundaries works! Keep an even keel to break that cycle!!

Have you ever wondered if you were a narcissist? I sure have. When I started learning about Narcissism and Codependency back in 2015, I was confused about the difference between these two ideas. It seemed they overlapped in places that made me scared- could I be just as bad as the person I was pointing fingers at?
The short answer is: NO. Narcissism is intense and serious. It is not the same thing as being a jerk, or being self-centered. All humans are celf-centered a lot of the time, but that doesn't make us narcissistic. True narcissism is when a person has no sense of self and has to deflect all blame towards others because they are unable to self-reflecft or feel empathy. Let's start reclamining the severity of the true word narcissism and stop using synonymously with all negative character traits. Public Service Soap-box announcement! ;-)

Do you ever gaslight yourself when you think of the narcissistic person in your life?
Do you wonder if it's your fault, if they're right, if everyone else is more sane than you because you see the bad behavior and they don't?
I've been dealing with real gaslighting from narcissists and people in my life for many years. But I've recently realized how I was doing it to myself!
This week I had a lot of anger and after consulting with a friend, decided to do a meditation to help release some of it. I came across this wonderful meditation by Amy Lowery on Insight Timer: https://insig.ht/wSLC3oMRpHb
I share about what helped me release my anger. Then, when the veil of anger was lifted, what I found behind it was a truth that I know deep in my bones. This will help you if you've ever suffered from narcissistic abuse.
My favorite expert on narcissism: Dr. Ramani Durvasula with a book ("It's Not You") and a podcast ("Navigating Narcissism"), both INCREDIBLE.
I also read a book recently by a therapist about narcissistic abuse recovery: Ingrid Clayton's "Believing Me." https://www.amazon.com/Believing-Me-Healing-Narcissistic-Complex/dp/B0BCSCYRLB/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&dib_tag=se&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.PJDSHzhZ8WZbjLV12WtrttisvMiVRXpfyI7hs-eoQZuIvpnytQos3s9XEKVXul5qIpml0fcO2jd6sBxg9mdGj6L6E56NqOtX0uM3wUwP6oqAuCxQREXt9to8ltLeNuLgGfDMuNOZX6KvbrYvwP9y8g.z8SXIRvLY905d-O4t2WaARadWfPr7b4an9sTVSRWkks&qid=1708668278&sr=8-1

I listened to a popular male podcaster recently say that we should never mention our ex or our trauma when dating.
I disagree. What do you think?
While I think the idea of trying to have a fun, light, time while dating is a good rule of thumb, I disagree that I should stop myself from sharing anything serious. My goal in dating is not just to have fun. It's to be my authentic self so that I can tell quickly if the person I'm with actually likes me for ME rather than just the absolute shiniest version of myself.
I discuss why I think it's important to stay honest, even on a first date. A brief mentioning of tiny pieces of our past, especially if asked, is not going to make or break a date with the right person.
I also share about why I'm proud of overcoming my past and that trying to not mention something purposefully feels shaming to me. Anyone who I would want to be with and who would end up loving me is going to be someone who can handle truth and wants to seek out truth. Truth doesn't need to go as far as creating a trauma-bond. It's essential to a healthy, loving relationship, even from the first moments of meeting.

Rewind from 2022 that I thought you might enjoy! I hope it keeps you from making the mistakes I made!
How do we know when we are feeling desperate and should take extra precautions while we date? How can we tell if we have low self-worth? Sometimes it's hard to see these things until they're in the rearview.
I share three ways you can tell if you're a little desperate or have low self-esteem when dating. I tell a story of a dating relationship I had in 2020 during the pandemic. I was a leetle more desperate for attention and affection than I knew back then.
All relationships are here to help us learn and grow. That's why I'm sharing these honest stories with you all. Maybe hearing my experience can help others say no and start to react when they are treated less than they deserve.

Rewind: I'm re-releasing this episode from 2022 because I hope others can learn from my bad mistakes.
Trigger Warning!
I mildly discuss a date-rape situation in this episode. No major details, just feelings and thoughts about the situation.
My third installment in the "Dating Deathtrap" series is about my second relationship after my divorce, which is more than super-cringy. What happened with this man I dated was what plunged me into truly taking therapy and my immediate need for healing seriously. It led me to finding a new therapist who specializes in EMDR.
Jumping to conclusions about someone we're dating is a "deathtrap" because on the positive side or the negative side, we're not living in reality. This causes problems and it's a recipe for a dating disaster. I learned from this relationship that even if someone seems like a great person and checks a bunch of boxes on my list of qualities I want in a partner, I need to take my time and pay attention. He could still be a psycho-boundary violator. It's in those more subtle moments that we get to know another person, not necessarily in the big things.
Thank you for listening!

Erin Vandermore, Licenced Therapist, Wellness Coach, and Author, wants us to take our healing seriously! She says that if the body says it's trauma, it's trauma! We don't have to waste time defining what that exactly means. (Big T Trauma? Little t trauma?)
Erin and I talk about creating boundaries between work life, creative life, and home life. We also dicsuss boundaries with our children- is it okay to say no to playing Fortnite?

As a single parent, have you ever felt like you're seen as a reject, or as if you're wearing a scarlet letter? Shoshana Alexandra is here today to help reframe that outdated stigma that I have felt as a single parent, and maybe you have, too.
Shoshana Alexandra wrote a book called "In Praise of Single Parents: Mothers and Fathers Embracing the Challenge." It's become a place of refuge for me as I learn how to feel connected in a society that still professes the need for the nuclear family model (which is actually very unnatural according to anthropological research!) What we do need is to "expand the family!" Shoshana created a rich community surrounding her son, who had 13 Godparents that helped raise him! They are still in his life to support and guide him when he needs it.
Shoshana and I discuss the dysfunction in our relationships that led to us becoming single parents, the idea of "double parenting," how to vet and find a supportive community, and how to embrace the joy that is already present in your parenting- albeit alone or with many supportive friends and chosen family. Shoshana truly reframes what it means to be a single parents. Aren't we so lucky to have these wonderful beings in our lives? I know I am.

Today is part 2 of a 2 part discussion surrounding breathwork and intergenerational trauma that starts in the womb!
Susan Tuttle, author and breathwork practitioner with 30 years of codependency recovery, is back! Her first Episode, "How do we Learn to Love Our Bodies?" #66, is one of my most-downloaded episodes ever.
We start off by discussing how our birth stories and birth trauma have shaped our lives. Our first moments of life trained our brains to use some of the coping mechanisms that helped us survive, but are now stopping us from embodying the healthy lifestyle that we crave.
Susan shares a miraculous story about her time last summer being trained as a breathwork practitioner in Costa Rica. She believes that breathwork allows for the waves to part and the truth to come to the surface. This leads to the ability to forgive and better understand our beginnings here on this Earth.

I share my process today of boundary setting. I tell a story about a boundary conversation I had with my dad this week, which was unconfortable, but it taught me something important. I'm staying curious and keeping an open heart towards learning how to be a great communicator in those relationships where emotional intimacy is possible. Our culture and media markets that behavior change is direct. For example, if you want to lose weight, then you should diet to eat less. As many of us know from trying this multiple times in our lives, IT DOESN'T WORK for lasting behavior change! Behavior change is actually INDIRECT. The only way out of these patterns is deep, internal work. I give an example of what my therapist taught me about this topic and how I'm practicing these new skills to use in everyday life.

Jana believes that "awareness is the greatest agent of change,"
She discusses the idea that we attract ourselves in romantic relationships and that we can't get what we are not yet- financially responsible, emotionally intelligent, etc. It has to come within ourselves first to be able to attract that from another.

Mark Wolynn told me, "The Partner is the Mother," and it's one of the most profound sentences I've heard this year. Does this assertion track for you in your significant relationship? It sure does for me when I look back at my past partners. It was difficult to pinpoint at first, but now I see the similarities between the two and I know I have a large mother wound that I'm seeking to heal.
Today I discuss more about that quote and what it means in my life. I share what Mark Wolynn advised me to do to heal the wound, and my reaction to his words. I share a poignant meditation I did recently that revealed a shocking symbolic image that I'm still unpacking. It's embarassing, but I'm hoping someone out there can relate! Textbook codependency. (It's how I coped with my emotional neglect as a child, so I don't blame myself!)

When is the right time in childhood to bring up the topic of sex? The answer is pretty much from when they can talk! Listening to Amy Lang's podcast "Just Say This" has taught me so much about how to be open with my son about his body, his feelings, and his sexual health. It's helped me learn how to take the shame out of sexuality so that I can keep the lines of communication open with him as he grows up. We discuss sexual abuse prevention, pornography exposure, why it's important to teach your kids the scientific names for their parts, and she shares some great books that can help kids learn more.

Re-Release: My first episode describing Emotional Self-Care
(New episodes starting next week!)
Many of you have probably listened to this episode, because it's the most downloaded, being my first and all. My podcast started as "Self-Care for Survivors of Trauma" in November, 2021. Since then I've shared a lot about what self-care means to me. I take breaks at work to take deep breaths in the sun. I eat as healthy as I can. I get exercise, and monitor my water intake. Mostly, I take time to journal, feel my feelings, and listen to those parts of me that have a lot things to say! I used to ignore them, but now I know they are screaming to be heard.

I'm proud to share with you this conversation between me and my wise friend, Susan Tuttle, who just published her first book in October, 2023! (Link below)
Susan is a life coach and teacher of all things recovery. She shares valuable advice about her journey to find balance in her life and to learn how to stop self-abandoning. We speak about breathwork, body image, and how to respect and acknowledge our bodies for the miraculous systems that they are.
If you'd like to get in contact with Susan or have her as your life coach, DM me and I will get you two connected.

~Re-released popular episode from 2022~
Do you believe that the emotional injuries you suffered in childhood stick with you until they are processed? Or do you think we can just "keep them in the past" and deny they exist?
I know from experience that I'm not able to sweep what happened to me as a child under the rug.
I've been suffering from a lot of insomnia related to my perfectionism and workaholism. My brain wants to wake up in the middle of the night and fight fires. The "fires" are my brain's perception of mistakes I've made throughout the day and things I should do better next time. This stems from a deep fear I have of messing up and then getting yelled at or shamed for how I'm never good enough. I unconsciously believe that if I'm not perfect, I will get in trouble with authority figures, or maybe, die. It's that serious in my body. This is directly connected to the verbal abuse my parents inflicted on me in my childhood.
So, how do I deal with that now?
I share a pathway I've found- using EMDR and Family Systems therapy. I discuss how to comfort that inner child who's so worried she's not doing it right. I hope to reintegrate that fearful part of me into my adult self so that I can (literally) sleep better at night!

I'm celebrating my 100th episode this week!!!!!!! I thought long and hard about how to make it extra special. I decided to invite someone I look up to, someone who is always curious and interested in new things... someone who loves me... my DAD!
We philosiphize about two of my dad's favorite things: football and mathematics.
Listen to hear why learning math is important for every person, how punishments have shifted since my dad was a boy in 1950's Wisconsin, and why football is a metaphor for life. Then, you might even want to stay for the two corny math jokes at the end. Even if you roll your eyes, it will bring back memories of your favorite high school teacher that had passion for his subject.
I hope you enjoy it.

What do we do after we put our foot in our mouth, or overreact to something someone says? Do we bury our heads in the sand and pretend it never happened? Do we just wish it away and lie to ourselves that it was really no big deal? No! We REPAIR.
I love this concept of repair being part of intimacy in relationships. We are flawed humans, so we will always do things to hurt others unintentionally in relationships.
I share two stories about how my friends and I repaired after some poor communication.

Did you have an abuser from your childhood that you haven't seen in many years? I did, and I ran into them a few weeks ago.
NOT a fun experience.
I went into a fawning response and took their lead, acting like everything was cool. Inside, I was wanting to gag or yell out in anger, or shake them like, how can you act like this is normal for us to be talking right now?!?!?
I share my thoughts about how to deal with abusers from the past, and make the connection between what happened to me then and how it has impacted my life today.

Do you have the belief that following your dreams, making more money, or getting that dream house/car/job you have always wanted will be extremely difficult to accomplish? I used to, as well. I'm here to tell you today that you can prime your brain for abundance by creating a morning routine for yourself and changing your thought patterns. I've trained my brain to move from those negative, defeating thoughts, towards recognizing when I'm having them and hitting the reset button. This has made a huge difference in the amout of synchronicity that shows up in my life today. So many things have changed for the better ever since I've opened up to the endless, unfathomable possibilities the universe has to offer ever one of us. Listen to these three resources to help you move forward towards reaching your desires. Best of luck!

"Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into."
-Dr. Wayne Dyer
Do you have an abundance mindset? Are you open to receiving... Love? Energy? Time? Attention? Money?
At times I've been too much of a giver to the point where eventually, it made me resentful. The other bad part about giving codependently is that it closes us off to receiving gifts from others. We actually feel UNCOMFORTABLE receiving recognition, praise, gifts, attention, etc. Have you ever felt that way?
I share a story today about how I opened up myself to receive what others were offering, and how much richer and fuller my summer vacation became when I was willing to put down my fear and take that leap of faith into receiving from the universe. It feels so good. I want that for you, too!

MY FAVORITE EPISODE YET!!! I think you'll really love this one, if you're fascinated by intergenerational trauma!
I'm super pumped to share my interview with author and breathwork practicioner Melissa Pennel of "Questions You'll Wish You Asked Yourself."
After losing her parents and grandparents at a young age and getting sober before college, Melissa walked a path of recovery and self-reflection that led her to study psychology and to write a series of interactive journals that started with "Questions You'll Wish you Asked: A Time Capsule Journal for Mothers and Daughters." (Link below)
Melissa and I share a deep conversation about how things that happened in the past impact our lives today. "Our issues are in our tissues," as they say!
We discuss the mother/daughter/grandmother relationship at length, and Melissa delicately verbalizes how excatly to ask uncomfortable questions and glean answers that will allow us to live our best lives in the present.

Have you found a great therapist for your child? For me, it was a long rode to find a trauma informed therapist that understood my son and I. It was tricky to figure out what exactly my son needed and what I needed to feel safe, heard, and understood.
One therapist unexpectedly gave me some amazing advice that I share with you today.
I also share a parenting win that demonstrates how all the work you're doing by educating yourself on intergenerational trauma can positively affecting your children and posterity!

Today's guest, Jen Towns, has a PhD in Clinical Social Work and recently published a book that gives advice for queer lovers navigating trauma. The book is called "Our Deepest Roots: Navigating Past Trauma to Build Healtheir Queer Relationships."
https://www.amazon.com/Our-Deepest-Roots-Navigating-Relationships/dp/B0C6R9CCZD/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1691354079&sr=8-1
Jen and I discuss how being queer brings its own set of lived trauma to our love relationships and how we can show up to support our partners, and ourselves, when there is relational conflict.
Jen teaches and believes that trauma doesn't happen just in the brain, it happens in the body, and she uses different modalities to treat her clients including EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and DBT, among others.
Jen answers my deepest question of, how do I fit in being bisexual? and Do I need to be healed to be part of a healthy relationship?

You you have to have ten good reasons to buy something, or is the reason "because I like it" enough? I have a tendency to be cheap. In life this has helped me stay out of debt and probably lessened my carbon footprint, but it has also stopped me from listening to my intuition and feeling joy! Because I supress my desires at times, I've decided I can be "dysfunctionally frugal."
I'm learning how to stop being dysfunctionally frugal. Today I share three ways I've embraced my desires this summer in going places and buying things that make me happy for no other reason than "becuase I want to" or "because I like it." To me, it feels like leveling up towards becoming the woman I want to be- who enjoys life and follows her dreams. Ready to join me? Thanks for listening!

Do you have mother wounds? According to Mark Wolynn, 85% of us do. I am definitely one of that statistic. Today I share about how I've changed and grown in terms of my relationship with my mother, and how I realize now that it has very little to do with her anymore. Now it is up to me to do the healing work on my own, to heal my own heart so I can share grace and love wherever I go.
I give you a practical guide of what to do each night and what to say to relieve your suffering surrounding resentments and wounds with your mother, or others. Good luck with this practice! I hope it reieves you of worry, guilt, and suffering. Let me know how it goes!

Welcome to the first episode of my re-titled podcast!
This podcast, formerly known as Self-Care for Survivors of Trauma, has been RENAMED Grace + Boundaries: Navigating Intergenerational Trauma!
I'm fascinated by studying Intergenerational trauma and I wanted to share with you all why it's been the key to me learning how to be more graceful in all my relationships.
On today's episode, I share the two big mindshifs I've experienced over the past few months that have led me to feeling like a newer, better, more emotionally regulated, version of myself. Firstly, I made strides in setting healthy boundaries to protect my creative energy. Secondly, I had a miraculous shift in my viewpoint about others who have hurt or abused me in the past and how to navigate my relationships with them in the future.
It all comes down to holding my boundaries in place with GRACE.
Thank you for trying something new and listening! Let me know what you think of the new title and artwork. I love you all! --Erin.

I've struggled with binge eating most of my life. I don't have a severe eating disorder, but food issues have been a part of the coping mechanisms I developed during my childhood traumas of sexual abuse and emotional neglect. Binge eating, because I'm of an average weight and it's a taboo topic, is not something I've talked about with many friendsBut this past weekend, I mentioned it to someone close to me and felt some freedom slip in.
I did a meditation that night about my abandonment wounds. This led me to realizing that there is a deep connection for me between my abandonment feelings, dissociation, and binge eating. I explain this connection in the podcast today.

What does it take to leave a narcissitic relationship?
I believe it took me lots of education, enough anger to keep on going, a lot of planning, and... faith that a better future was possible for me and my son! I'm so grateful for my journey towards freedom. It took me about seven years to finally feel free.
I share my story of leaving a narcissistic+codependent relationship and how hard it is to leave, even when you know you are being abused.

Do you have a sense of over-responsibility? Does it come out as unrealistic expectations for yourself and for others around you?
These could be a response to trauma, or conditioning, from your childhood.
I discuss three places in my life that I am battling my unrealistic expectations. When I can acknowledge them and accept that I might be expecting too much from myself or others, it helps me to calm down and be more in the present.

Today's guest hosts the podcast Foreign-Born Mamas. She hopes to help immigrant moms listen to their bodies, learn how to self-care and grow to become their authentic selves in this new country they call home.
Nurzhan shares about growing up impoverished physically and emotionally before immigrating to the United States as an adult. The trauma she faced as a young person was not discussed or acknowledged much at all in her family. She hadn't confronted her past until a year ago when she started having debilitating body spasms. These physical symptoms led her to becoming educated about what trauma she has been through, and started her on her journey to understanding her nervous system and self-care rituals that work for her.
We get deep in this episode- discussing the promises made to immigrants and the allure and "hamster-wheel" of the capitalistic United States.
Our intention is to validate trauma survivors to ackowledge the invisible traumas they have been through and to encourage others to open these conversations amongts themselves.

List your top three priorities... Go! Can you name them with certainty? How do you feel about them; is it honestly how you devote your energy? Would the people closest to you agree?
Today I share my top three priorities and how they have changed in the past years. I discuss how I might want to alter them in the future.
I was inspired for this topic by Lewis Howes and Jay Shetty in their recent interview on The School of Greatness, if you want to listen to two open-hearted men discuss this topic: http://www.lewishowes.com/1417

Have you ever had a therapist that was dismissive, insensitive, uneducated, or just plain rude? I sure have. My intention is to share my experiences with bad therapy so that it might empower you to speak up or leave a therapy situation in the future if it's not the right fit for you.
I share about many experiences I've had on the path to finding the right, kind, knowledgeable, golden therapists that I have for my son and myself today. It was a long journey!

Have you heard of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)? There is a 10-question test to see how much trauma you endured as a child. This test is a great start towards building more awareness around mental health in our world, but for me, a survivor of invisible abuse (emotional neglect/abuse), it falls very short in encompassing the vast ways trauma can be inflicted on a human.
I discuss ACEs and what's missing for that test. I share how individuals who have grandparents who were alcoholics/addicts are severely affected by this family progression. Intergenerational trauma has a reach of up to seven generations, some experts say.
Here are some resources to learn more about these topics:

Are you emotionally mature? If so, how emotionally mature are you? We've all heard of emotional intelligence, but is emotional matuirty something you've ever thought about before? I sure hadn't pondered the concept prior to the start of my spiritual journey ten years ago.
Emotional maturity is a huge marker for me in my life these days. I can look back and see how far I've grown in this area. I can also look forward and see how far I have to go in some aspects.
I give you a three-question quiz to identify where you are on the scale of emotional maturity. Ready to test the waters? Here we go!

Have you ever noticed your body reacting to media? I'm talking about scenes in a movie making you cover your eyes, or videos that you happened to glimpse that you wish you could un-see. Or, maybe you've even read some sensationalized news that made you nauseous or evoked rage.
I share some experiences I've had lately with the affects of media on me and my son, two highly sensitive people. I showed my son a couple PG-13 movies that made an impact on him (arguably too much) where I learned he's not ready to see any more truth of life at that depth.
A show I watched recently had a very provocative birth scene where there was bodily abuse by the doctor towards the mother. I share about how watching this scene made me cry for a couple minutes and also helped me possibly release some intergenerational trauma leftover from my own birth.
How does media affect you?
Do you think of media consumption as a CHOICE?

If you've experienced thoughts of suicide, then you've had "suicidal ideation." These thoughts can be active or passive. I share some information about these thoughts today on the podcast because someone close to me has been feeling this way. I can relate, because I experienced passive suicidal thoughts while being in an emotionally abusive relationship. I take passive suicidal thoughts seriously. To mean it means we may not actively be pursuing completion, but we desperately need help for our mental state. Reaching out to others is the first smart step.
Please make a call if you're experiencing thoughts such as these. In the USA you can dial 988 for mental health help, or simply 911.

If you're single, do you celebrate Valentine's Day? I sure do! Besides giving gifts and cards to my son and my family, I do some little things for myself. I've always wanted flowers, chocolate, and a beautifully written card from partners of mine, but never have dated anyone that cared about V-Day. So, now I buy those things for myself!

Trigger Alert! This episode contains discussion of sexual abuse
I felt compelled to share a story from my 8th grade year in jr. high school, circa 1993.
I had a serious EMDR session last weekend with my therapist, where we unpacked some behaviors that have been ailing me. I've had some insomnia due to a hypervigillent part of me that needs to be perfect to avoid public humiliation. There's also some body dysmorphia leftover from messages I received about how my stomach looked as a young child and beyond. Those are elements of trauma recovery that I discuss in today's episode, along with a deep, humiliating, loss of innocence that I experienced in a room full of 13-year-old girls.

I start the episode sharing my tribulations about my son not wanting to go to bed. He had a "bad" day today, according to him, and I am learning to accept that his emotions are different from mine. I can't change his world view from pessimism to optimism, but I can listen, validate, and try to understand.
I talk about my two best friends and how they have taught me, through their beautiful and loving actions, how to love and support a friend. It's been a slow process becoming close to new friends and letting go of others. But I've learned that friendship has an ebb and a flow, and now I know how to show up for those ones that mean the world to me.

Being able to share my feelilngs of gratitude for my parents has been a long process for me. I was 36 years old when I lifted the veil of denial and realized that my childhood wasn't as perfect as my parents had told me it was. After realizing I'd suffered a lot of emotional neglect that led to other abuse, I had a lot of anger towards my parents, especially my mom. It's taken seven years of consistent work for me to come to this place of acceptance, fortiveness, and now, gratitude.

What types of substances do you use to fill that void inside your soul? Some call it our God-shaped hole. Or maybe it just feels to you like an aching or a yearning, tugging you towards that glass of wine or the bag of Hershey's Kisses.
For many years, I unconsciously used alcohol, compulsive exercise, sugar, and romantic crushes to fill that need inside of me. Luckily I've now learned where that impulse to use substances comes from. For me, it comes from lack of connection.
How do we gain connection? I do it through connecting with others who love and care about me, calling them, spending time with them, sharing detatils about our days. I connect with the universe/God through my morning prayers and meditation. I also connect to source through gratitude. There's something about listing items I'm grateful for that pulls me closer to contentedness.

How are your intentions surrounding dating? Are you aware of the reasons that you're seeking companionship? If it's to sooth your emotions or fill in that existential "hole" in your soul, then you probably aren't going to find something healthy nor lasting.
I share a story about how I dated someone with some subconscious wrong intentions. Now with my 20/20 hindsight, I can see clearly that I wanted this man to be there for me to help cover up some other dysfunctional behaviors I was experiencing.

I met a woman today who was dealing with painful custody issues surrounding her divorce from a difficult person. I used the term "narcissist" in the title because I wanted to succinctly point you towards they type of difficult person I'm talking about in this episode. But, I also don't love using that term because it gets thrown around way too often. I use the word in the sense that is truest to me: a person who is extremely manipulative and dangerously retaliatory, especially in a situation such as divorce and child custody. If you have ever been a part of a relationship with someone who has narcissistic tendencies, or even actual NPD, then you'll know that this is someone who will take anything and everything he/she/they can when they find a tiny nugget of power. It's awful and the court systems and legal systems can't really help us suffering from emotional abuse because unless there has been physcial violence, it is very hard to prove anything is amiss in a relationship.
I discuss how to get through these situations: working on yourself and your own maturity, and getting out your feelings in a place separate from the space you share with the difficult one. I had to train myself to be mature in triggering situations where bad behavior was rampant and so unfair. But stooping to a difficult person's level is crazy-making and an endless journey to nowhereland.

Could you be using fantasy as a coping mechanism to distract from feelings?
Well, I sure have for a lot of my life.
I'm finally noticing exactly how and when it happens and how I can stop that compulsive behavior. It hurts me and it hurts the objects of my affection. It also derails me on my path towards being part of a healthy, loving partnership.
I share three reasons why living in fantasy is detrimental to my goals (and maybe yours, too!) Living in fantasy and unrequitted love is not living. I want more.

I'd love to hear from you!
How do you treat your body?
I was 11 when I started dieting and trying to change my size to fit into society. I didn't treat my body well for decades.
Now I care about respecting my body and treating it with the love I feel for myself. What does that look like? For me it means eating healthy with less, poisonous refined sugar, building muscle at the gym, and doing yoga with a teacher that cherishes herself and spreads that love around.
You can find me @iheartserin. I'd love to hear from you. Send me a message and I'll get back to you!

When does culturally appropriate "politeness" border on phoniness? That was a question I started pondering recently. Is it really polite if we act one way in front of people but rip them to shreds behind their backs? I myself am wrestling with how I can stay polite, yet authentic. That's the balance I want so I can be true to myself.
I tell a story of my reckoning over trying to curb my people-pleasing behaviors in order to be more true to myself. It's hard for me to be authentic, but I have to get more to that side or else I end up with resentments. You might hear a little anger here in this episode. I'm human and I'm working on it.
Thanks for listening, Survivors.

Do you ever date someone who is out of your league in a negative way? I sure have. Partly it's been out of my desire to not hurt people's feelings, give people a chance, and be kind. But there's also another part of dating down that a codependent can get stuck in- dating someone "less than" so that I (unconsciously) can feel like I have control and the upper-hand in the relationship. It's not a conscious decision, but my instinct pulls those matches to me since I operate a lot in the dating world out of fear.
What are your thoughts on re-dating the same person? I'll tell you why I think it's a no-no.
You can find me @iheartserin. Leave me your thoughts on my DM's! I'd love to hear from you.
I mention the helpful book The Verbally Abusive Relationship by Patricia Evans. I recommend. https://www.amazon.com/Verbally-Abusive-Relationship-Expanded-Third/dp/1440504636
You can find me @iheartserin. How do you like these episodes about dating? How has the dating world been for you?

I'm in a series about dating after divorce. Back when I was leaving my ex-husband, I was still in victim-mentality. Sadly, I was an easy target for someone to take advantage of in the dating world. I tell the story today about my first time joining a dating app and how that turned out. Let me giv you the Cliff's Notes version: not good. It's a cautionary tale to myself and hopefully for others out there who have experienced emotional manipulation in the dating world.

Today I start my series about Dating After Trauma. I share three things that skewed my percetion towards developing a healthy and loving relationship with a significant other.
I'm still on my journey, but today's episode is a happy stop along the way. I can look back and see how far I have come, even though along the human trudge, we will never fully arrive.
What act of kindness and connection have you done lately? Have you left a positive reivew for a business or service you like, have you brought a treat to a suffering friend?
It takes me effort to push myself out of my comfort zone to help someone else. It take vulnerabiltiy to make connections.
I share a couple stories of connections I've recently made. Then I discuss how gratitude is a learned skill that can lead to many benefits if it feels honest and healing to you.
As I start the new school year as a teacher, I feel it necessary to revamp my self-care routine. What do I want to add to my days and weeks to make myself stronger, happier, and more energized? I share five self-care activities that I am adding to my life this fall and one extra tip to help with anxiety when I'm future-tripping about all the problems that may occur.
I mention Liz Josefsburg's Target 100 program. https://www.lizjosefsberg.com/target-100
It's a first for our podcast- we have a voicemail from a listener named Eugenia. I share her voicemail and tie it in to an expansive experience I had this week connecting with an old high school friend. This high school friend and I knew each other when we were going through so much trauma, but we have both chosen a pathway of healing. He demonstrated to me how healing plus compassion and forgiveness can lead to breaking that cycle of intergenerational trauma. Let's get healing and forgiving!

Have you had Covid-19 Brain Fog and Depression? It lasted way longer than I thought it would.
I share my experience with Covid depression and how getting my first mammogram was typical, yet felt a little traumatic. I gained some empathy and compassion for myself and others through these experiences.
I'm grateful today for you who are listening to my podcast, because I love making it! Thank you! I'm also grateful for my post-covid good health. I wish you health and wellness, Survivor!

We all want to heal pain from our past, but how?
Healing takes acceptance of heartbreak and willingness to sit through the acknowledgement of pain.
Today I share the vulnerable story about how and why I quit drinking over five years ago.
I love myself and my son more than I love wine.
Thank you, God.
Have you ever been in a friendship that's enmeshed?
Being enmeshed means that you are overly involved in another person's life to the extent that you may be sacrificing your own needs and emotions, or expecting them to cater to your needs/emotions. Most likely you and the friend violate each others' boundaries and this can cause trauma.
Recognizing enmeshment is important because it can give us insight into our own intentions and behaviors. If we have curiosity about our behavior in a relationship, we can be more self-aware. And THAT is self-care for us survivors of trauma!
I'm telling the story today about when I met Oprah. Okay. We only locked eyes for a number of seconds, but it was very significant to me on my spiritual and creative journey. I share the story and the advice Oprah gave to me that day, which will hopefully inspire you towards your next creative endeavour.
I mention Oprah's Super Soul Sunday, Super Soul Sessions, and her podcast, Super Soul.
I mention the creative work of Julia Cameron, who's book, The Artist's Way, is a creative program I love and follow.

It is possible that your family has some dysfunctional patterns and you don't know it?
Unfortunately, it sure is.
I will talk about the covert dysfunction that cropped up in my life when I was a teenager, which I minimized most of my life. Then I will list markers of dysfunction that ourselves and family members might unconsciously demonstrate. The goal is to identify our patterns so that we can educate ourselves and hopefully become cylce-breakers that stop perpetuating the dysfunction and instead, share healthy behaviors with the world.
It's a bold statement, but my inner child feels it deeply. Love in a dysfucntional or enmeshed family is not love, it's codependency and control.
What is love? What is the kind of love that we want to show our children and others? We all might have different definitions, but the question is universally human.
I share my definition of what love feels like to me. I tell a story about being triggered by my mom recently and how I'm trying my best to learn how to love to break the cycle of disconnection in my family.

Thank you for listening!
Being sick triggers feelings of guilt for me. I feel guilty taking time off work when I know it will be a burden on others. I feel guilty not being the peppy mom to my son on the weekends when I need to rest. Going to the doctor even usually makes me feel worse because they are always so rushed and jaded.
Do you take time off work when you're sick? If so, good for you! That's the way it should be in a healthier society, right?

Take care, survivors!
Do you notice the constant ebb and flow of parenting? Sometimes it feels like I'm rocking it, then five minutes later I'm rubbing my forehead with weariness.
I discuss my "peak" on Friday going on my son's field trip, then the "pit" Saturday morning when I had to complete a messy art project that was in danger of staining my whole house.
I tell the story of our weekend and how I chose to put my need for rest first, even in light of my son's whininess about not getting to have friends to play with (they were sick.)
How do you put your self-care needs above those of your family members at times?
It's a hard decision, but I know it's better for everyone if I choose NOT to be the martyr.
You can find me on Instagram @iheartserin.
Do you know what AFGO is?
Maybe it will help you the next time you feel stressed out or shameful.
I discuss my son's obsession with bad words and how I had a difficult weekend where I labeled what I was going through as AFGO to make myself laugh.

Do you believe in the concept of the inner child?
It feels woo-woo to me, but I like woo-woo. Also, it's undeniable to me that I have connected with parts of me that are younger ages and been able to see that part as a child in my mind's eye.
I discuss how my therapist has introduced me to different ages of myself through my "parts" (Internal Family Systems Therapy). Giving these misbehaving parts a voice is what we need to do to reintegrate that part into our system. I give an example of how this is done.
At the end I suggest using nondominant handwriting as a way to give your inner child a voice when they are upset and leading you down unhealthy pathways.

What does having healthy priorities mean to you? For me it means allowing myself to put my self-care and my son before my work. I used to live to work and now I work to live.
I share what unhealthy priorities looked like for me in the past and I tell a story about me making better decisions and learning how to live by my values and priorities for a happier life.

I've had so many people ask me, what is codependence?
It's difficult term to define, but I take a stab at in in this episode. I read some indicators of codependency from Melody Beattie's famous book Codependent No More and share a couple personal stories about how I first knew I might be codependent and the codependent slip-up I went through this week.
Here's my favorite list of codependent patterns to help you better understand and identify these unhealthy behaviors. This list also includes opposite, healthy behaviors: http://www.coda-tulsa.org/pdf/recoverypatterns.pdf?msclkid=ec2b1fe6c44e11ecb1a874677f065a85

Does criticism from other feel like deep pain for you?
I'm sensitive to criticism and sometimes it still makes me cry, even though I've done a lot of work around healing those hurt parts of me leftover from childhood.
I share a story of being criticized by a stranger yesterday. Instead of breaking me down towards further shame and sorrow, I was able to use this new knowledge about my pain points to get to know myself even better and comfort that inner child, still needing her voice to be heard.
I share an article from O Quarterly magazine with Oprah and Brene Brown.
I mention EMFT (tapping), Family Systems therapy, and EMDR therapy.

I had to say no this week to someone important: my mom. It was difficult, but it brought me so much freedom. I strive to be my most authentic self, and saying no is part of that.
I share the gifts that can come from saying no, and I read a passage from a daily reader that discusses choosing to have a separate identity than those in our family of origin.

Today I talk about why that happens and what we can do to change it.
I discuss emotional availability and what that looks like to me today.

Quick- what are three things you love about being a parent?
Let's revel for a moment in the joy children bring into our lives.
I'm not denying that parenting is the hardest job in the world, but the paradox is that it is also the most joyful, free-spirited fun out there on the planet.
I love being a mom.
Today I talk about the fun my son had during a sleepover, and how I was able to sit back and enjoy the show. Then, I share a story about my son not wanting to go to bed and the (possibly manipulative) words he chose to try to pump me for more time and attention. I discuss how I've learned to set that bedtime boundary with him. I've taught myself that I need that boundary to be sane and civil. Taking care of me makes me a WAAY better mom.
Enjoy!

What comes to mind when you hear the word humility?
To me, it's a strikingly beautiful concept and I see it in the natural world that surrounds me.
I discuss a situation I went through recently where I had to stick-up for myself on a large-scale. To get through that terrifying time, I relied on my humility, my ability to surrender the outcome of the situation, and belief that if I become the leaf in the stream, all water flow to greater freedom and serenity.

Were you a compliant child who did everything your caregivers asked of you to stay in the bounds of their conditional love?
I sure was.
I was praised for being quiet and following the rules.
I was deathly afraid of my own voice, which had the power to get me criticized, mocked, shamed, or rejected.
I lost my authenticity and became a sponge to other people's blame.
The compliant child gets praised in our society. I was raised to follow that pattern, but I'm working on stopping it by teaching my son how to disagree respectfully and appropriately.
What is the problem with raising compliant children?
In this episode, I share the negative effects of my childhood compliance in my adulthood. It has kept me immature, not knowing myself, and very codependent in my adult relationships with significant others.
Through therapy and a lot of reading, I have learned that I am not responsible for another person's actions, feelings, or choices. But living that assertion and voicing my opinions in love relationships, especially when sex is involved, is a work in progress.
How has compliance affected your love relationships? What has been the fallout for you?

One day in 2015 I Googled the words "Emotional Abuse" and I couldn't believe my eyes! My life was there in black and white. Everything I read lead me back to one word: narcissism. But it wasn't the overt narcissist that I was dealing with. It took me a while longer to learn there is more than one type.
We've all heard the word "narcissism" overused, but have you heard of the covert narcissist? These individuals are extra tricky to discover, and usually we only discover them when we are in a very close relationship with one. Even after using the label to help me protect myself from these types of people in my life, I still question myself at times because they can present as such do-gooders in certain areas of their lives.

Sleeplessness, or insomnia, is one way that my body tells me I have some inner needs that need tending. Using substances or sleep-aids block me from seeking the care my body and soul need to move forward.
I've experienced a lot of sleeplessness in the years leading up to my divorce and the six years afterwards. As I walk forward in my recovery from an abusive marriage and codependency, I still have pockets of time where I fall asleep at night but then wake up at 2am unable to go back to sleep. I believe now that it's caused by anxiety.
This week I will share about how my sleeplessness is caused by anxiety, and the new connection I made about how my anxiety is caused by my deep shame of never feeling good enough.
I discuss my recent EMDR session with my therapist where we worked on my shame in regard to feeling like I "should" be a superstar at my job, though it's my first year in the position.
Do you experience sleeplessnes? Do you think it's connected to anxiety and/or shame? DM me on instagram, I'd love to hear from you: @iheartserin

Have you ever been emotionally triggered at work?
Of course you have, and so have I!
Work is a microcosm that demonstrates our internal landscape. It's a mirror to our emotional inner-needs, just as all relationships with others can be.
As a survivor of trauma, I feel that my lower self-esteem and reliance on approval of others gets triggered often. Now that I am aware of these psychological occurrences, I can take the time to sooth myself when these things happen.
I discuss how a traumatic experience from my childhood got recreated with my bosses at work, how workaholism lead me to burn-out, and how today I stop and regroup when I'm overwhelmed.
I take the time to validate myself and practice becoming that loving parent that takes emotion care of me the way I deserve.

Today I discuss how I use the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), sometimes called "tapping," to help me feel my feelings and get to that place of cry. EFT helps repave our brains towards healthier connections. Neuroplasticity is amazing!!! It's helping me heal my trauma.
I share a story about how I recently gave up coffee and how that led me to overeating and angry, inflammatory acne. Giving up a drug revealed a new layer of emotion/negative thought pattern that had been suppressed inside of me from formative years.
I also share a listener review and discuss how following out intuition is an adventure worth taking! We never know what's around the next corner when we try tiny new things. A one degree turn can change a life's trajectory! I've witnessed this many times now and it's marvelous!

As a child, I learned many compliant and people-pleasing behaviors so I could hide from anger and ridicule. These codependent behaviors kept me safer as a child, but they are detrimental to me as a parent and in my adult relationships. As a parent, controlling my environment looks like me dominating and bossing my son around, which, at times, is inappropriate and disrespectful towards him.
I share a story of when I realized I was repeating the cycle of verbal abuse and criticism onto my child and what I've done to change my behaviors since then.
I give an example of how I've learned to set limits as a parent so I can create time and space for myself to be the most loving parent possible.

Should I stay or should I go? This is one of the hardest choices to make in a relationship be it a love relationship, a friendship, or even relationships with family.
Staying or going might be an even harder decision for survivors of trauma, since we may have had less examples growing up of what a healthy relationship and healthy conflict looks and acts like.
Today I'm going to discuss the book Should I Stay or Should I Go? A Guide to Knowing if Your Relationship Can- and Should- Be Saved and how it helped me decipher my way out of my eight-year marriage. I give some top signs that led me to my decision to leave, and I share some of the best advice from the book on how to tell if you're in a relationship that can handle growth, or if you're stuck in a dead-end cycle.

Are you a Highly Sensitive Person? One out of five humans (and animals!) are innately more sensitive than the rest of the world. Identifying these traits helps me accept and validate the times that I have felt different when I have been slower or more emotive than the others around me. Being highly sensitive is not celebrated in American culture, and can lead people like me to have felt less-than or different in the past. Reading about HSP's helps me learn more about myself and realize the positive qualities I have with this increased sensibility. HSP's are artistic, creative, and deep thinkers. We might notice things in our world that others miss. We might appreciate art and music to a greater extent than non-HSP's.

I give many examples from my own experience in a dysfunctional marriage, and I share how I sought help to grow in emotional maturity so I could find my way out of the unhealthy relationships in my life.
Discussing examples of emotional/mental/psychological abuse is self-care for me today. It helps me validate my experience as a survivor of this invisible sort of trauma. Many people in my life, including therapists, didn't understand what I was going through back then and still I feel gaslit by society about this issue today. I hope my sharing of these experiences helps you feel validated towards taking yourself and your situation seriously.
