The Salt Company
The Salt Company is the college ministry of Embassy Church in Bloomington, IN. We exist to advance the message and ministry of Jesus on the campus of Indiana University. This podcast is where we post sermon audio from Thursday nights.
Philippians 4:10-23 I Derek Jones I April 30, 2026
As we wrap up the book of Philippians and the semester, we’re left with this question: what if there was a way to live where your life doesn’t fall apart, no matter the circumstance? Paul shows us that kind of life is marked by contentment. Not a fleeting feeling, but a steady, lasting peace that must be learned. The secret isn’t found in what we have, it’s found in Jesus. True contentment comes from walking with Him, not chasing after anything else to fill what only He can.
Contentment isn’t something you feel, it’s something you embody. It produces a life that is steady, generous, and bold. When you’re rooted in Christ, you’re freed to give, to serve, and to keep sharing the gospel with conviction. You don’t invite Jesus into your plans, you follow Him into His. Are you available for the work God wants to do in and through you?

Standing firm is “in the Lord.” Your stability comes from being rooted in Christ. If you don’t know who you are in Him, you’ll look for identity somewhere else. Real joy comes from standing firm in the Lord. It means living aware that God is with you now and is coming again, and that truth reshapes your life.
Bring your anxiety, fear, and uncertainty honestly to Jesus. Prayer doesn’t have to be polished, it just has to be real. We don’t drift into peace, we drift into anxiety, so we must actively meet with the God of peace. Remove what feeds anxiety, interrupt it by naming it, praying it, and replacing it, and build a life that can hold peace. Standing firm isn’t a moment, it’s a way of life.

We can spend our lives building a legacy for this life, or live for one that lasts into eternity, a life that exalts Christ. The invitation is simple but costly, relentlessly pursue Jesus. The goal isn’t comfort or achievement, it’s more and more of Him. Some of us love the benefits of Jesus more than we love Jesus, so what’s on the throne of your heart? When confronted with sin, do you repent or defend it?
Real joy is found in the will of God. Run hard after Jesus, leverage your life for Him, and ask what He wants to do with your life. At the end of it all, the prize isn’t what Jesus gives, the prize is Jesus.

None of us have life fully figured out, we’re all carrying baggage. Culture constantly tells us to trust ourselves, but Scripture calls us to put no confidence in the flesh. Anything we rely on to feel right with God that isn’t Jesus won’t last. Real confidence is found in Christ.
Like Paul, we’re invited to let go of confidence in both our sin and our success to know Him more. So what are you counting on? Maybe it’s time to drop the bags, both the good and the bad, and run after Him.

We often think humility comes from trying harder, but Scripture shows us a different way. True humility is formed at the foot of the cross. This is where we see that we are more sinful than we thought, yet more loved than we ever imagined. When those truths collide, pride begins to melt and Christ becomes our focus.

The apostle Paul claims “To live is Christ and to die is gain.” When Christ is our greatest treasure, life becomes fruitful work, and death becomes eternal glory. But you can’t truly see death as gain till you see Christ as beautiful. Are you living life in light of the gospel?
