I’m delighted to say my guest on the show this week is Kerry Councillor and Mayor of Tralee Terry O’Brien. When he was in New York Terry unfortunately had an accident that changed his life forever when he jumped into a swimming pool which resulted in him breaking his neck but the accident didn’t affect his witty sense of humour and he is always up for a bit of fun at any chance he gets. Even though Terry was facing adversity his accident led him down a different path to become not only a Councillor but the mayor of Tralee.

https://www.radiokerry.ie/podcasts/stand-out/brid-oconnor-standout-with-ian-oconnell-december-15th-2021-262551

A very powerful and honest interview is going to be had on my show tomorrow night from 8-9 PM on Radio Kerry. Brid O Connor is a phenomenal person with an important massage. Sometimes when things happen us, we say ā€œWhy me?ā€ I found myself in that situation after I had my accident, but then I said, ā€œWhy anyone else?ā€ My guest today is a woman from my hometown of Killarney. Brid O Connor knows what it feels like to face adversity head on. Whether it was the devastating news of her mother receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis or the fact that only 15 months on from this, BrĆd herself would be told that she too had cancer. Prompted by the loss and her own journey through cancer, she wanted to find stories that others could find comfort in and that will give hope during the lowest hour.

During this time Brid said she had lost her ā€œsparkā€ and that it took time for it to re-emerge but when she found it again, she knew she could help others with her story. The book is a beautiful collection of conversations with many familiar faces and others include Billy Keane, sports star Louise Galvin and fashion designer Don O’Neil. The incredible contributors to spark share stories of grief, serious illness, life altering events and challenges and the book is filled with messages of hope. Proceeds will go to Comfort for Chemo, Kerry’s €5 million project to build a centre of excellence for the patients of Kerry.

https://www.radiokerry.ie/podcasts/stand-out/elma-walsh-standout-with-ian-oconnell-december-8th-2021-261585

I am delighted to say that my guest on tonight's programme is Elma Walsh. Elma is the mother of the brave and inspirational Kerry teenager Donal Walsh. At 12 years old Donal was diagnosed with Osteo Sarcoma cancer and nine months of chemotherapy Donal came back to the playing field not as a trainer but as a coach to his peers. In February 2102 the Cancer returned, this time to his lung and Donal had to have half of his lung removed and endured another round of chemotherapy treatment until June

In October 2012 Donal was diagnosed for the third, and ultimately final, time with tumours in five places. On May 12 2013 Donal moved on to his final journey and reached ā€œGod’s Highest Mountainā€. I speak to his mother about Donals cancer journey, his legacy and why suicide is not the answer to life's problems. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
