The Broken Road to Mental Health: Recent Episodes

Sharon Fekete

This podcast was born when I believed the need for more access to mental health allies increased after releasing my book, The Broken Road to Mental Health in Life & in Business. The professional mental health sector is overloaded & we need to offer solutions for those stuck in limbo, waiting to get help. Everyone deserves someone they can identify with, I hope this podcast provides some comfort for those on the broken road.

Tune in on Wednesday, 12/13/23, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring Yolanda R. Harper LCSW.
▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎
ABOUT OUR GUEST:
While many authors know all of their lives that they want to become published, Yolanda Harper’s first book, Soul Sabbatical, started as a series of journal entries written during a burn out “meltdown” that led to her taking a sabbatical from her roles as a trauma and relationship therapist, researcher, trainer, mental
health thought leader, and business owner/entrepreneur. As she shared more about her experience, she realized how much people resonate with the idea of a sabbatical, but don’t know how to step back from the demands of hustle culture to take one.
Using her understanding of trauma, neurobiology, and the broken systems we live in, Yolanda wraps words around our lived experiences. As if you’re sitting down with her and a cup of coffee, she says the things that you’re thinking in your head, helps you to understand that you’re not alone, and walks you through ways to reclaim your time, energy, and joy.
Yolanda is a warm hearted music and nature lover who has a strong faith and likes #TrailLife. She is real; a therapist, mental health thought leader, entrepreneur, TEDx Speaker, Soul Sabbatical Doula, wife, and Mama always to her grown children – but a human first.
She is brave – not afraid to tackle the grit, whether on the hiking trail or in life. She leads with humanness and enjoys authentic connection with others, bearing witness to their world of tears, laughter… the whole shebang. She invites you to come home to your heart.

Tune in on Wednesday, 11/8/23, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring Best Selling Author, Lorna Byrne.

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

Lorna Byrne is an international number 1 bestselling author (her last two books have gone straight in at #1 on the UK Sunday Times Chart) with more than a million readers around the world. Her books, Angels in my Hair, Stairways to Heaven, A Message of Hope from the Angels and Love from Heaven have been translated into 30 languages.

Lorna has been seeing angels since she was a baby. Very unusually, she sees angels physically with as much clarity as the rest of us see people and she sees them every day. This diminutive, soft-spoken, uneducated Irish woman who did not talk about what she was seeing until seven years ago, says she has no idea why she can see angels when others can’t, adding that she is just an ordinary person.

Alternative health and wellness is a passion of mine along with living slowly, simply and minimally next to the ocean, while practicing an attitude of gratitude.

Helping others with their holistic health has always been intrinsically rewarding for me. The Nectar Remedy came from following my belief that we should treat the root cause not just the symptoms of feeling unwell. Thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit about me!

Tune in on Wednesday, 9/13/23, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring Doctor, Comedian, Foodie, Violinist, & Singer, Chris Min!

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

"I was born to immigrant Korean parents in Houston, Texas in 1967. In those days, Houston was much less diverse than it is today. Luckily my mother was able to access an organization called S.M.I.L.E., which was an outreach program from South Main Baptist Church (the S.M. were for the name of the church). A kind white woman, Magdalene Olsen, took my mother under her wing and taught her how to make classic American dishes like casseroles that utilized Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup. Over the years, my family grew more affluent, especially after a move to West Des Moines, Iowa, when my father went into private practice as a doctor.

Growing up in two homogeneously white areas, Texas and Iowa, my parents emphasized assimilation and I was a model student. I eventually matriculated to Harvard University and met my future wife my freshman year. Like me, she was the child of Korean immigrants and born in the US. Even more remarkable was that she grew up in Brookings, South Dakota.

After college, I came to New York for graduate school but never left. I have now raised twin daughters in NYC who now are 21 years old and are both attending Harvard University. My wife is a Managing Director in the legal department at Morgan Stanley, and I am an increasingly entrepreneurial biotech executive who has served in the C-suite of publicly listed companies."

Tune in on Wednesday, 8/23/23, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring Herban Flow's sponsored athlete, CT Weichmann.

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

CT is a Project Manager who helps health systems install and upgrade their medical records software. In his free time over the last 12 years, he traveled the world exploring some of the best beer locations as his passion. In these travels, he visited over 1,400 breweries and tried nearly 20,000 different beers. But, back in 2021, on New Year's Day, he had an awakening. After reading 503 pounds on the scale, he knew he had to make some changes in order to live a healthier lifestyle. He began his fitness journey with walking and swimming, and later he purchased a bicycle as an addition. For two years, he pushed himself physically daily, but the weight would not come off. This year, he challenged himself to remove alcohol from his diet. After that change, the weight started falling off. Currently at 435 pounds, he has completed a triathlon, a duathlon, a couple 10k races, and multiple 5k’s. CT credits his family and friends for their continued support. Another big support in these efforts has been Herban Flow, a non-alcoholic beverage haven specializing in functional drinks that are as delicious as they are nourishing. CT was able to switch out his alcohol-based hobbies for healthier alternatives. He is now working with the team as their Beer Consultant. You can also find him at local races as Herban Flow’s Sponsored Athlete.

Tune in on Wednesday, 8/16/23, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring OBGYN and CEO of PearsonRavitz, Dr. Stephanie Pearson.

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎︎︎

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

Before beginning her career in insurance, Stephanie was in the prime of her career as an OB/GYN when she suffered a shoulder injury at work that soon prevented her from practicing medicine. Her struggle navigating the disability claims process, along with the challenges of losing her identity as a physician, drove her to become a passionate advocate and advisor to her peers on the importance of disability insurance.

Stephanie dedicated herself to educating others on the vital need to have the appropriate policy (something she had lacked) and decided to become an insurance broker; specifically, the rare type of broker who follows her clients throughout their careers, advising them continuously as their life circumstances change.

Tune in on Wednesday, 6/14/23, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring Entrepreneur & Author, David Shamszad.

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

A︎BOUT OUR GUEST:

My journey through dual diagnosis (addiction and mental illness) started young. Deaf in one ear, son of a brilliant alcoholic artist father, failure out of public and private schools across Oakland, I was an awkward kid who couldn't focus for the life of me. At 13 I began an on-again off-again complex relationship with alcohol and drugs. I was a kid trying to numb the pain of being ""different"" with a fifth of vodka. I had no idea at the time, but that moment would be a catalyst for the 15-year long journey through addiction and mental illness that would frame the rest of my life. As a young adult I oscillated between debilitating depression where I could hardly function to a body that screamed with energy, going a week or two without sleeping. I careened through manic episodes, week-long binges, arrests, a suicide attempt, and an involuntary commitment to a psychiatric hospital. For the first time someone confirmed my dual diagnosis: a substance abuse addiction and bipolar disorder. I had spent my life frantically dribbling two balls at the same time without fully understanding it.

A chemical dependency treatment center and an unwavering partner saved my life. My road to recovery went through the hell. But on the other side of it, my life began to transform in a game-changing way – one which my younger self could never have possibly imagined. Today, I'm the CEO of SG Real Estate, a rapidly-growing, multi-million-dollar real estate investment and brokerage firm. My first book, a memoir of my struggle with addiction and bipolar disorder, in all its visceral detail, is forthcoming in 2023. It is my mission to help transform the mental health and addiction dialogue away from stigma and cynicism and toward realness and vulnerability. Regardless of circumstances, past experiences, or diagnoses, I know that we can rebound and rise higher than we ever thought possible. There is always more time on the shot clock."

Tune in on Wednesday, 6/7/23, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring Author, Lawyer, & Mom, Nadia Maria Davis.

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎ ︎︎

A︎BOUT OUR GUEST:

Nadia Davis was a rising star - a young Latina lawyer and victims rights advocate famous for freeing an innocent young man named Arthur Carmona. She grew up the daughter of a famous immigrant rights attorney in LA and later became the wife of then State Attorney General Bill Lockyer (30 years her senior). Her meteoric rise famously crashed in a drama-filled public fall from grace that included drug abuse, a sex tape, blackmail, incarceration, and ultimately, many years of recovery as a mother and as a woman. Her narrative is a defense of privacy, parenthood, and autonomy.

Davis has been a public figure in California for two decades. In her new deeply personal memoir, HOME IS WITHIN YOU: A Memoir of Recovery and Redemption (Girl Friday Books, April 25, 2023), she chronicles her journey of recovery -- it's an inspiration to anyone seeking a way out of darkness and a guide to ending a cycle of shame and generational trauma.

In her book, Nadia bravely shares her story and reclaims her voice by revealing the intimate details of those dark years and her personal journey to hell and back. Through letters to her sons, we see her transformation as a result of finding a spiritual home, daily meditation, kundalini yoga, a daily recovery fellowship, and self-compassion.

Still passionate about helping others, Nadia's using her experience to help others by creating a Home is Within You non-profit that provides skilled navigators to young moms inside the justice system.

And thank you to our brand NEW sponsor, Dr. Francisco Torres, author of, "KEEP KICKING FRISCO, KEEP KICKING."

Purchase the book here: https://bit.ly/KeepKickingFrisco

Doctors always take a patient’s medical history, and Dr. Torres’ self-assessment was no different. In Keep Kicking, Frisco, Torres describes this whacky journey of self-discovery and sheds light on how the accumulated eccentricities of our upbringings shape the person we grow up to be-- panic attacks and all.

This book aims to demonstrate how the lives of others intersect with our own and shape who we become. For those who suffer from anxiety, depression, and fear, Dr. Torres’ story offers hope for the future and a blueprint for overcoming the panic we sometimes face in our own lives.

Tune in on Wednesday, 5/3/23, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring the Director of the documentary film, "Unmasking Hope," Eric Christiansen.

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

A︎BOUT OUR GUEST:

Eric Christiansen is an acclaimed documentarian who has built his life’s work around socially responsible filmmaking that educates, inspires and most importantly heals. Christiansen, a seven-time Southwestern Region Emmy Award recipient, explores the impact of trauma; how we adapt to grief; the resilience of the human spirit; and how a powerful platform for hope can help trauma survivors begin the vigilant journey of healing. A trauma survivor himself, Christiansen worked through the loss of his home and possessions in the Painted Cave Fire by creating his first film Faces in the Fire 25 years ago.

All of his films (Faces in the Fire, Homecoming: A Vietnam Vets Journey, Searching for Home: Coming Back from War) have been transformative in the recovery process for thousands of people whose lives have been compromised mentally, spiritually and physically by trauma. Leveraged as educational tools by top mental health institutions, Christiansen's films migrate from the entertainment arena into environments that help additional audiences navigate the profound collateral damage trauma creates not only on the individual, but the family and community as well.

Christiansen’s current feature documentary “unMASKing HOPE” premieres on public television October 2022.

Throughout his career, Christiansen has worked on both commercial and cause-driven projects, and produced for major networks including Discovery, TLC, PBS, MTV and an Imax film. He’s appeared on 50 podcasts in 10 countries discussing his work.

Tune in on Wednesday, 4/12/23, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring Author, Dr. Friedemann.

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎ ︎

A︎BOUT OUR GUEST:

I had suffered from anxiety, low self-esteem and obsessive-compulsive behaviors from the age of 10 until my early thirties. I know how overwhelming and disempowering our emotions can feel.

But once I learned how to work consciously with the subconscious mind, the source of our feelings, I was able to overcome my emotional challenges and turn them into catalysts to discover my authentic truth and harness my untapped potential. Until I healed and outgrew my anxiety, I believed my career was in medicine and academia.

I received my medical degree from the University of Munich, Germany and pursued a career in cardiology at the University Hospital. Over the years, I became increasingly concerned with the lack of time we had for our or patients and the rather “mechanical” healing approach of allopathic medicine. So I decided to take a break and accepted a scholarship for a postdoctoral research position at the University of Washington in Seattle, which, after four years, gave me a PhD in molecular biology.

Being immersed in the world of basic research significantly changed my perspective on human potential. As a physician, I was trained to view the body as rather fragile and prone to failure. Science, however, illuminated a simple fact that I hadn’t fully realized until then: each and every cell of our bodies has an intelligence and sheer unlimited potential to grow, adapt, and heal in ways that are still far too complex for us to fully comprehend.

In this episode, Sunita and I discuss toxic workplaces.

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

A︎BOUT OUR GUEST:

Sunita Alves has delivered projects for banking, insurance, and manufacturing clients for over twenty-five years. As a professional engineer and project manager, she has worked in many technical teams and has found it disturbing how people can be mistreated because of toxic work practices and personalities. Seeking more balance and integrity, she became a coach then a mindfulness leader at the tech company where she worked.

Despite best intentions, she suffered a mental health illness triggered by this former work environment. Sunita has since recovered with the help of meditation. She now works as an independent consultant but is passionate about speaking up for employees to defend and protect their mental health in what can otherwise be a toxic workplace.

Two major factors that positively impact stress at work are (1) meditation and self-compassion and (2) psychological safety factors that correlate to mental health. Sunita can connect both of these knowledge domains to help employees take effective steps to become resilient and even thrive, even if they must work under stressful conditions.

Tune in on Wednesday, 1/25/23, at 6:30am EST, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring Author, Lauren Polly!

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

A︎BOUT OUR GUEST:

Lauren Polly, MEd, CCC-SLP, RYT, is leading the Mental Wealth Movement, which unlocks the unorthodox talent of the neuro-emotional divergent population.

Whether through bespoke 1:1 intensives or consulting with forward-thinking companies on DE&I trainings; she carves out space for those who think and feel differently to rise up and offer their uniqueness.

She truly believes that teaching those who are typically side-lined to package their brilliance unlocks un-orthodox talent. And deeply supporting high-achievers who tick differently helps them not just exceed expectations but defy them.

As an emotional divergent herself, Lauren understands firsthand how a mental health diagnosis can mean a life of stigma and limitations. Luckily, she has also discovered that what is sometimes labeled a liability is actually an asset in disguise.

She has always felt compelled to walk others to this possibility; actualizing immeasurable change in people’s internal landscape and outward success. She has tenaciously walked this path herself; which is chronicled in her multi-award-winning and best-selling book, The Other Side of Bipolar.

The Mental Wealth Movement combines the very best of Lauren’s personal and professional journeys to offer cutting-edge content. Her 16+ years spent in neurodivergent communication therapy and 5+ years in hospital management further contribute to her singular perspective and methodology. Those who are different can thrive! If given the tools to do so – both at work and in life.

Professional athletes spend their entire lives training to develop their skills and strength in mastery of their sport at the highest professional levels. Similarly, physicians train their entire lives developing a mastery of the sciences and medicine. Why don’t physicians have agents who negotiate their deals like professional athletes?

This inquiry was the genesis of Rocky Mountain Physician Agency.

After more than one decade in hospital and healthcare administration, specializing in physician contracting and compensation, Ethan recognized that his skills, training, and expertise could be put to more meaningful use negotiating physician contracts on behalf of physicians.

The extensive experience Ethan has in physician contracting is founded on a doctorate degree in law from the University of Dayton School of Law. Valuing faith, family and fun, her daily prayer of “God, decrease me and increase you so I may do your will” is a constant reminder to cherish every moment and inspiration to be of service to her community as a coach, consultant, and writer.

That quickly turned into an addiction that completely took over my life. After detoxing in county jail I realized that I wanted more out of life than getting high. On December 26th, 2021 I celebrated seven years drug and alcohol free. I started a podcast in February 2020 called Recovery Survey where I talk with a variety of guests that have overcome addictions and mental health issues. In September 2021 I also helped started a live stream on Facebook and YouTube on Thursday nights called Recovery Revolution Live. My goal is to spread the message that recovery is possible. If I can do it so can you!"

Tune in on Wednesday, 9/21/22, at 6:30am EST, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring Vitiligo Advocate, Tonja Johnson.

Stay tuned to learn more about the Vitiligo Awareness Walk which is coming up on September 24th!

RSVP here: https://5kevents.raceentry.com/races/vitiligo-awareness-walk/2022/register?ci=113184-

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

A︎BOUT OUR GUEST:

Some people stand idly on the sidelines and watch life go by while others choose to participate in it and make a difference. Tonja Johnson chose the latter and decided a long time ago to use her voice, talents, creativity, innovation, and perseverance to positively implement change.

Diagnosed with vitiligo in 2014 and finding it extremely challenging to find information and access local support within the state of Florida, Mrs. Johnson founded Beautifully Unblemished Support Group, Incorporated (www.beautifullyunblemished.com) in 2017. Beautifully Unblemished Support Group, Inc. is a non-profit organization providing various types of support, including social connectivity, and plethora of information to those living with the noncontagious skin disease.

Her passion and drive are inspired by her own experiences dealing with vitiligo and learning to embrace the physical changes she faces daily. As a dark-skinned African American kid, she had been teased for having dark skin. Now, as an adult, she is losing the very skin she had worked so hard to love. Therefore, a key mission of Beautifully Unblemished Vitiligo Support Group, Incorporated is to empower individuals to love the skin they are in and to diminish the stigma others place upon those living with vitiligo.

Equipped professionally with an extensive background in the public health service sector, Johnson diligently advocates vitiligo awareness within the state of Florida by educating local and state governmental bodies including mayors, commissioners, and state congressmen and senators. In addition, she also engages with school officials and community activists.

In an effort to raise awareness with wider audiences and inspire those with vitiligo, Mrs. Johnson regularly uses outreaches and various media footprints. She has been featured in local national publications such as the National Institute of Health (NIH) Winter Edition and Central Florida Health News and recently a contributing author in Sistersletter (an AARP publication) and an upcoming co-author in the Journal of Dermatology Nurses Association. She also frequently appears as an advocate on national television channels.

Tune in on Wednesday, 5/25/22, at 6:30am EST, for a special episode rerun featuring host, Sharon Fekete.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, this episode is dedicated to spreading awareness about the importance of speaking about mental health at work.

We can make a great impact with our employees when leaders are provided with the resources to share with our staff that may be struggling.

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

Mental Health in the Workplace

❖ All members of a workplace share the burden of depression and anxiety, it’s a vicious cycle. Change starts with leaders, managers and HR professionals recognizing the inner conflict many talented people feel, and doing something about it. When people get the space and the support they need, it can change their careers, and their lives.

❖ Mental illness is a challenge, but it is not a weakness. When we acknowledge our mental health, we get to know ourselves better, and are more authentic people, employees, and leaders. Authenticity at work leads to better performance, engagement, employee retention and overall wellbeing.

❖ Less than one third of people with mental illness get the treatment they need, and this comes at a cost. Failure to acknowledge an employee’s mental health can hurt productivity, professional relationships, and the bottom line.

❖ What needs to change? Professional support needs to get better. We need to have the option to ask for help, and feel safe doing so. We need more flexibility, sensitivity, and open-mindedness from employers. The same treatment and attention they’d give to a broken bone or maternity leave.

What can you do?

Educate employees about mental health issues, encourage them to seek help if they need it, and be a support to

colleagues who might be struggling with mental illness or addiction.

o Ask the right (direct) questions

o Offer resources (NAMI, Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, Recovery programs (FREE), EAP (employee assistance program)

Tune in on Wednesday, 1/26/21, at 6:30am EST, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Brynn Cicippio!

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎ ︎

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

"Raised by a Philly police officer and a registered nurse, I was born with a passion for helping others.

I have diplomas and degrees from Central High, West Chester University and LaSalle University and began my career as a parole officer in Montgomery County, PA. My job was not only to ensure people were following the rules and staying out of trouble, but also getting the support and help they needed and deserved. I saw a gap here and went back to school to become a therapist. I then began my clinical work within the Montgomery County Drug Treatment Court Program, ultimately serving as the clinical coordinator. Drug treatment courts save many lives every day, taking people out of jail and placing them into treatment.

In 2012, I opened the doors to my private practice (www.bcatherapy.com) and continue to serve my community. My practice has grown from a solo venture to now a group of 7 marriage and family therapists, all with a variety of special focuses from addiction recovery to anxiety, depression, parenting challenges, grief and loss, and everything in between. We continue to grow as the need continues to be present.

In 2019, with the help of my intern, we launched Devon's Closet. This clothing drive for women in recovery is named for Devon, a young woman who lost her battle with addiction in May 2018. We select a different women's recovery home each year and personally sort and deliver the items to the home, ensuring we are donating dignity, hope, and support for women in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.

The practice slogan "Do The Work" was born out of the challenges people overcome in therapy. It truly takes an incredible amount of work and there cannot be healing without doing the work.

Lastly, in addition to being a therapist and a business owner, I am a mother of 3, stepmother to 1, and experienced the death of my father 5 years ago while 7 months pregnant. We all have a story to tell that impacts the work we do and how we show up for others. I want your listeners to know that hope and healing is always an option and it is never too late to Do The Work."

Tune in Wednesday, 11/24/21 at 6:30am EST, for a brand new episode of The Broken Road to Mental Health Show featuring yoga teacher and breathwork facilitator, Allison Hildebrand. Check out Allison's studio at Breath & Flame.

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

ABOUT ALLISON: I’m Allison, I travel a path of healing through addiction, an eating disorder, co-dependency and deep rooted rage. I have worked a 12 step program, followed traditional religion, modern medicine, and rebelled against structure all together. Through these layers of deep healing I began to feel a deep sense that I was not at all who I thought I had been. I began weaving all the parts of my truth back together. I attribute my growth to simply not giving up; to the guides from the other side who are with me often, and my earth angels and teachers always there lighting my path when I choose to see. The greatest relief was realizing there is no finish line, nothing to accomplish or achieve that can make me anything more or less than I am right now and have always been. This is my truth. I am a Breathwork facilitator and a 500 hour RYT, studying vinyasa and yin.

Tune in on Wednesday, 8/18/21 at the NEW TIME of 6:30am EST, to welcome Mona McGregor Licensed Mental Health Counselor to The Broken Road to Mental Health Show!

In this episode, Mona and I talk about SEX!

Mona is an Ideal Life Counselor & Champion of Women and she is hosting a soul-soothing, small-island self-care retreat on the glorious Gulf Coast of Florida, called "Rejuvenate & Revitalize You." The retreat will take place from September 16th-19th.

For more information, visit I Wonder If on Facebook or check out the retreat website: https://iwonderifpodcast.com/rejuvenate-revitalize-you/

▪︎︎ ▪︎︎ ▪︎︎

Mona’s deepest passion is in helping women come to see that self-awareness, self-care and self-love are not selfish, they are essential. She has been through it all – a divorce, working many jobs at the same time just to keep up, and living how she thought her culture told her to to earn happiness and fulfillment. She never saw self-care modeled in her patriarchal family. She received the opposite message — hustle, work hard, and never stop pursuing the next thing. Relationally she heard you better get married again, as you won’t be able to take care of yourself, or don’t be too strong men don’t like that. Taking care of everything and everyone else mattered first and foremost. And if there was ever any time left over, she would feel guilty for not DOING more. It wasn’t until she became extremely burned out and exhausted from working two jobs that she finally reached a breaking point. The season of visine and caffeine needed to end! In that moment, she felt wildly fed up with all the supposed rules of how to live and decided to create a completely different road map for herself. Ever since, she has been committed to empowering women everywhere to finally put themselves first. She wouldn’t have it any other way, for she sees just how transformational it is when women flip on the self-care switch, once and for all. She believes women should be celebrated! And celebrate women, she does. As a licensed mental health counselor, certified hypnotherapist, sex therapist, and certified yoga teacher, she helps women who make commitments to work, friends, and family start making commitments to themselves. She creates experiences and offerings that guide women to focus on their self-care, resiliency, strengths, desires, and JOY. In her retreats, she guides women into rejuvenation so they feel loved, cared for, and deeply energized. And stretching beyond her retreats, she inspires women to take small steps towards creating their ideal lives and relationships.

Tune in on Wednesday, 7/21/21, at our NEW TIME of 6:30am EST, to welcome Brian Kimmel to The Broken Road to Mental Health Show!

I discovered Brian after stumbling upon a TikTok video featuring them singing about therapy that currently has 270k views, and I just had to have them on the show!

Check out Brian's counseling website here: 👇

▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎

Read Brian's bio below:

Hi, my name is Brian Kimmel. I use they/them pronouns, am assigned male at birth, and identify as multicultural, queer, and gender non-conforming. My offerings include somatic counseling, justice, and creativity. These are life paths that can help us move towards a sense of greater freedom and flow. I am a fully licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) and registered-dance/movement therapist (R-DMT). My experience includes over twenty years experience in healing and human services in non-profit community mental health agencies, clinics, and private practice. My combined experiences and lifelong work as a dedicated bodyworker, somatic educator, Dharma Teacher, and performing artist form a rich foundation from which my counseling approach is supported. I came to therapy as a therapist driven by my own recovery from mental illness, mostly around issues with mood and emotional regulation as a child survivor of sexual abuse. Internalized stigmas of well or not well add to the real impacts of racism, heterosexism, and transphobia that I have also experienced. This is the trauma of living in a militarized world at the price of the destruction of the Earth and colonization of our bodies and beloved communities. I was born and raised in the Seattle area, the occupied lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, in a mixed family, second generation Dutch/Indonesian American. This includes nationalities and descents of German, Northern Italian, Polish, Austrian, Sundanese, Javanese, Chinese, and Minahasan. More than a DNA script, these cultures in many cases were part of my daily upbringing and current life. Together, they are a narrative that I continually reflect upon and re-write. I hope that this introduction will be helpful for you in determining whether I would be a good fit as your counselor. Our first consultation or initial session will be to talk about the ways you have sought support and healing on the paths you are now living.

July is the month of freedom.

The last 2-3 weeks have been a "re-emergence" of sorts, which in this post-vaccine world is an example of a new and welcomed freedom.

This Sunday, we as a country will celebrate freedom on July 4th.

And being sober is happiness and freedom in and of itself.

So talking about freedom just feels right to me today.

Tune in 5/5/21 at 8am EST and hear my thoughts surrounding MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE. We can make a great impact with our employees when leaders are provided with the resources to share with our staff that may be struggling.

Mental Health in the Workplace

 All members of a workplace share the burden of

depression and anxiety, it’s a vicious cycle. Change

starts with leaders, managers and HR professionals recognizing

the inner conflict many talented people feel, and doing

something about it. When people get the space and the support

they need, it can change their careers, and their lives.

 Mental illness is a challenge, but it is not a weakness.

When we acknowledge our mental health, we get to know

ourselves better, and are more authentic people, employees,

and leaders. Authenticity at work leads to better performance,

engagement, employee retention and overall wellbeing.

 Less than one third of people with mental illness get the

treatment they need, and this comes at a cost. Failure to

acknowledge an employee’s mental health can hurt productivity,

professional relationships, and the bottom line.

 What needs to change? Professional support needs to get

better. We need to have the option to ask for help, and feel safe

doing so. We need more flexibility, sensitivity, and open-

mindedness from employers. The same treatment and attention

they’d give to a broken bone or maternity leave.

What can you do?

Educate employees about mental health issues,

encourage them to seek help if they need it, and be a support to

colleagues who might be struggling with mental illness or addiction.

o Ask the right (direct) questions

o Offer resources (NAMI, Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, Recovery programs (FREE), EAP (employee assistance program)

Join us 4/28/21 at 8AM EST to hear my conversation with Stuart Mace, Ambassador for The Circle Line. This is a company that exists to help people reach their true potential. As mentioned on their website ( https://thecircleline.co.uk/ )"mental health has been misunderstood and stigmatized for centuries. We’re working to change this – helping people develop, be well and thrive."

On Thursday 26th March, Stuart's wife Jaki tried to take her own life. Luckily, it wasn’t Jaki’s time and she now has the care that was needed to start her recovery.

Stuart completed a Mental Health First Aid course as his challenging experiences this year ignited a passion deep within for which he truly believes has real purpose. He recently passed a NEBOSH Management of Health and Wellbeing at Work course and has applied to study a degree in Workplace Health and Wellbeing. It is said that the value of life is measured by lives that you’ve touched…Stuart plans to continue living life to its fullest.

Looking forward to you all learning more about Toni Smith Thompson tomorrow on the podcast show. Tune in at 8am EST wherever you listen to podcasts or watch the show right here on FB!

Below is some info about Toni!

Toni Smith Thompson is a wife, bio mom of 1, bonus mom of 5, glamma of 11 (two on the way), and great glamma of 1. Toni loves makeup and is rarely seen without lipstick, which explains why some of her grands call her “Ninni with the lipstick”.

Toni is a proclaimed self-help junkie, loves fashion and all things glitzi and glam. Her greatest accomplishment is being a mom and teaching her daughter to love who she is. She loves watching comedy and music shows with her husband of almost 10 years; and spending time with friends and family, especially her grands.

Over the years, she has enjoyed being a licensed florist, HR Manager & Benefits Coordinator, and Executive Director of a state funded Mental Health Rehabilitation Agency that provided low income clients with counseling, social skills and psychotropic medication when necessary. Toni loves volunteering, enjoys mentoring kids and some of her fondest memories are as church VBS Director and Youth Play/Casting Director.

Toni is a self-advocate for her personal struggles with Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Her journey began over 30 years ago and she has always been open-minded about treatment for her mental wellness. She knows there’s not just “one thing” that works and everyone’s journey is individual.

She is the creator of Living The Lime Life, a place where living with mental health struggles and stepping fully into owning it publicly, with no shame meet. Living The Lime Life came to fruition in 2015, when Toni was battling her own mental health struggles, yet pretending to keep it all together. She felt called to step out of the darkness of stigma and shame she carried for her own mental unwellness with vulnerability and in spite of any judgment.

One of Toni’s greatest therapeutic breakthroughs came as a ROAR ™ Comedy graduate where she performed her personal story ~LIVE~, “I LOVE being told I’m TOO MUCH”. Toni now walks firmly in the belief that “you are NEVER too much for your people”!!

Toni’s passion and mission is being a Mental Wellness Advocate and is helping to open up the first ever mental wellness company using a holistic approach that helps build stress resiliency, better mood and focus, improve sleep quality (and many other issues children and adults struggle with) by repopulating the gut microbiome. She knows personally how vital a role our gut microbiome plays in mental wellness and physical health since finding this solution over a year and a half ago when her daughter began seeing phenomenal results after struggling for two years with chronic illnesses. Although Toni was on medication, she was still struggling with low mood, anxious thoughts, brain fog, poor memory, lethargy and more. Once she began the same gut brain axis system, all of those symptoms faded over time. She feels extremely blessed that both she and her daughter are happier and healthier than they have been in years since beginning a natural protocol!

Toni is excited to be pursuing her dream of becoming a speaker and published author in 2021!

!As always, many thanks to our sponsor

In honor of PADDY's DAY on 3/17/21, I will chat with you about the families touched by addiction & suicide. My entire family is from Dublin, Ireland and there is no better way for me to honor it than to discuss the way addiction & mental illness affected all of us and how we persevered. Lots of love and understanding from my incredible Irish heritage saved me from a continuous downward spiral.

The 12th Chapter of my book is dedicated to the families, here is an excerpt:

"First and foremost, it’s not your fault. I want to share with you now the reason I decided to write this book. I have received so many gifts since I got sober in 1994, too many to list. I never spent any significant lengths of time reflecting on this journey as I have now in my 25th year. I was taught to live one day at a time and that is how these years all came together. Slowly. "

I couldn't think of better 1st guests than my wonderful parents, Charlie & Marie Cuthbert. We have a candid discussion about what it's like to be the parents of an active alcoholic/drug addict & how they felt witnessing my depression. There is only one way to normalize this conversation and that is to keep having it. I hope the tips my parents share with you will bring some solace to your life. You are not alone.

I have been perplexed with the state of the world today like many others and decided to take a small action to encourage real talk about mental health. Tomorrow (Wednesday, January 13th) at 8am I will launch The Broken Road to Mental Health podcast. The 1st episode has some history about my struggles with addiction, alcoholism, depression and beyond & what to look forward to in future podcasts. I've also recommended some of the podcasts I listen to including Last Day,The Hilarious World of Depression, Jay Shetty's On Purpose, and books like Johann Hari's Lost Connections on Audible have all truly helped me through this pandemic.

I have been listening to the whispers as always and realize the reverence of this space to create for others in need. I hope you will join me on this new journey as we navigate the broken road to mental health together.

Thank you TieTechnology for your support and sponsorship.
