This week we are talking about possibly the most mysterious person of the Trinity: God the Holy Spirit. Depending on your background or personality, you may love the idea of the Holy Spirit coming upon the Church, or it may make you a bit uncomfortable. However, AJ is here to remind us that we are the ones who submit to the Holy Spirit, not the other way around. We can’t sweep Him under a rug or treat him as our cosmic genie. He is our Comforter and Helper, but that comfort and help comes from being willing to step out and receive what He has for us. What is the Spirit of God saying to you today?

Continuing in our series, “Who is God?” this week we ask the question, “Who is Jesus?” Have you ever found that there are conflicting ideas of Jesus floating around? Some think of Jesus being all about truth, right and wrong, only bringing correction. Others picture Jesus as being all about grace, only forgiving and accepting us just as we are. However, Jason teaches us from John 4, Jesus is full of grace and truth. He is the only one who can quench our spiritual thirst because he has all of the truth that realigns us and the grace that draws and empowers us.

We are launching a new sermon series called, “Who is God?” This week, Jason invites us to wrestle with some really challenging aspects of God’s character. We are turning to Genesis 22 where God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac, the child who God promised to Abraham. Often God tests us in ways that we don’t like or understand, and he lets us sit in tensions that we don’t want to be in. But, there is a blessing at the other side, a deeper revelation of who God is.

Do you ever feel like you’ve plateaued in your relationship with Jesus? Like you’re not experiencing the full life that Jesus offers? That is exactly the problem that Jason is addressing in this standalone sermon, “Baggage Claim.” We all have baggage that we accumulate through life, whether it comes from choices we’ve made or things that have happened to us. However, too often we accept Jesus’ forgiveness without also claiming the freedom that we have in Him. In order to run the race that God has for us, in order to love and serve our community well, we need to “throw off” all of the baggage that slows us down like Hebrews 12 says. What is God calling you to surrender to Him?

This Sunday marked 3 years of Coastal Church. Those years are filled with stories of transformed lives. However, the journey has not been easy. This week, Jason reminds us that we can expect resistance before, while, and after lives are being changed. The kingdom of darkness is going down swinging. So, we can take heart while experiencing resistance while working for the Kingdom of God, because resistance often coincides with the powerful work of God.

Have you ever caught yourself thinking that God gives a little bit extra Holy Spirit to certain people and those people are the ones who are supposed to “do stuff” in the church? A lot of us can find ourselves thinking something along those lines. We’re really good at self-disqualifying. However, AJ Plaizier, lead pastor of Yarmouth Wesleyan, is here to remind us that God has called each of us to good works. God saves us by grace, and that grace overflows into action in our lives. What is God calling you to do?

Many of us want the blessings of God and the benefits of following Jesus. Fewer of us want to order our lives in the way that Jesus did. This week Jason Parker is reminding us that we cannot have the ministry of Jesus without the life of Jesus. As we step into a busy fall, we have to remember to leave margin for God to work in and through us, not out of duty or obligation, but because we need His grace everyday.

This week we are kicking off our new series called “Renew.” It’s all about renewing our vision to take Jesus into every community of South-West Nova Scotia; not changing that vision but falling in love with it again. Often, we can forget that our mission is not just for us as a church, but for us as individuals. Jason took us to John 17 where Jesus prays for his followers, which includes those of us who follow him today. There Jesus gives us a definition of eternal life, which is the very thing that we need, and thankfully, it’s what Jesus offers to us. That’s why we need to take Jesus into every community, because he is offering eternal life to anyone who would receive it.

Many of us have heard the idea that “God loves us” enough times that it can feel cliché or obvious. But something profound happens when you realize that God not only loves you, but he actually likes you too. That is the message that Tom Cann is sharing with us this week. It is the statement that drives South Church, the newest church in our network which Tom and his team planted in the South End of Yarmouth almost a year ago. Though it may only contain three simple words, the sentence “God likes you” has massive implications for you, your life, and your relationships, which Tom unpacks for us.

This week we are concluding the book of Romans as Jason Parker walks us through Paul’s final remarks in Romans 16. God has something to say to us even through Paul’s greetings and instructions ending this letter. There is an emphasis on the important role that women have to play in leading the church’s ministry. There is a warning against gossipers and people who want to divide the church. Finally, there is a call to be established in the gospel. Thankfully for us, it is Jesus who establishes us, empowers us for ministry, and enables us to be unified as a church. That is good news that needs to be shared.

As we near the conclusion of our series navigating through the book of Romans, Jason Parker taught us about God’s desire and ability to actually see his mission accomplished. We looked at Paul’s description in Romans 15 of his completed mission from Jerusalem to Illyricum and everywhere in between, and how he wanted to pursue new regions and advance the gospel further. The gospel requires us to take our focus off of ourselves and our empty pursuits and actually love and serve others the way that God does, to dream big dreams about the impact that can be made, not just in our community, but around the world.
This week we are diving into Romans 14. James Murphy walked us through the freedom of a clear conscience that we can have in Christ, as well of all of the cautions in this chapter about how we are to use that freedom. We should not judge other Christians for the different ways that they go about honoring God, but rather focus on how actions, even our good ones, affect others. Everything we do needs to come from a deep faith and trust in Jesus.
This week we are tackling a controversial passage in Romans 13. Jason Parker walked us through the Biblical instructions for how we are to live in relation to our governing authorities who are put in place by God. He reminded us that all of our relationships are to bring glory to God and to show people what Jesus is like. We can do that, even for leaders that we don’t agree with, because we look forward to the day that King Jesus will come back and make everything right.
This week we are back into Romans 12:9-21. Jason took us through verse by verse to explain how each of these short exhortations actually apply to our lives. How we navigate relationships as Christians, both with people inside and outside of the Church, should be radically different from the world around us. We are called to love authentically, to show hospitality, and to rejoice in hope. And we can do all of those things well with God’s grace as his Holy Spirit fills us with his love to then go and share in overflow to everyone around us. How the Church looks relationally should be a picture of what heaven is like.
We marked our second week back into the book of Romans by having not one, but two speakers. Alex and James took us to Romans 12 to unpack how all of the theology that we’ve been diving into actually applies to our lives. Alex presented a picture of what it means to be humble, a trait that should define the Christian and is essential for our transformation. James then followed by describing how the Holy Spirit renews our minds in order to change us into the people of radical love and humility that Jesus calls us to be. We need to saturate ourselves in truth in order to be equipped to fight the lies that we believe which hold us back from living the abundant life.
This week we jumped back into our study of the book of Romans. Brett took us to Romans 10 to talk about how God imparts righteousness to us. He taught us that, though passion is essential like the letter’s original Jewish audience, we can often be passionate about the wrong things. We need to be careful not to put pressure on ourselves or others to try and become righteous on our own efforts or think that we can. Righteousness is given by God to those who confess Jesus as Lord and believe in his resurrection power.
In the concluding installment of our sermon series “The Church,” Jason reminded us that our passion as the Church should align with God’s passion. He took us to Matthew 9:35-38 to show us the heart of the Father and how we should respond to it. Jesus wants us to see the crowds, the needs in our community, to pray for them, and to be willing to be the answer to our own prayers. As we pray for God to give us his heart for the people around us, he also reveals to us the ways in which we can be his hands and feet. “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.”
This week we continued our series “The Church” by diving into what it means to be a part of the Kingdom of God. Jason reminded us that the Kingdom of God is not a distant dream, but actually a present reality that we can step into. Part of our mission is to bring the Kingdom of God here on earth as it is in heaven. What that means for us is that we have to submit to the kingship of Jesus.
In the latest installment of our series called “The Church,” Pastor Jason Parker took us to Ephesians 4:1-16. We talked about the spiritual gifts that the Holy Spirit gives us in order for us to fulfill our mission as the Church. Ephesians 4 specifically talks about five gifts that are meant to equip the Church. While different people may have different spiritual gifts and see the world in different ways, this passage challenges us to be unified and to use our various gifts to work toward our common goals: building up one another and making disciples.
We are continuing in our sermon series called “The Church.” Pastor Jason Parker reminded us that if we are going to make public impact as God has called us to do, we have to prepare in private. Part of that preparation are trials and battles, and even Jesus was tested in Luke 4 before he began his ministry. The Christian life can often be described as breakthrough followed by battle, followed by breakthrough, followed by battle, and so on. However, God uses those battles to prepare us for the mission he has called us to go on. Those trials make us stronger as we learn to rely on him for our strength.
This week we started a new series called “The Church” where we will be diving into the purpose of the Church and the role that each of us have to play in it. Pastor Jason Parker took us to Matthew 28:18-20 where Jesus gave the “Great Commission” telling each of his followers to “go and make disciples.” That mission is actually the main reason for the existence of the Church, which trickles down into our specific mission as Coastal Church to “take Jesus into every community of Southwest Nova.”
This week we dove into Romans 9 with Pastor Brett Laidlaw. Though this can be a loaded and challenging passage, we were reminded that context is key to understanding the main point. Regardless of us, God will accomplish his purposes, but he invites us to come along and partner with him, not because of what we bring to the table, but simply for the joy of relationship. We need to stop trying to do things for God and start doing them with God.
This week we had a great time with guest speaker Mike MacNeil. He taught out of Matthew 8:23-27 and also told some stories from his years of ministry experience. Though we cannot choose what “wind” or “waves” we are up against, we can still choose how we face them. We can choose who we bring along with us on our journey through life, and there’s no one better to have “in the boat” than Jesus.
