Staphylococcus bacteraemia is one of the most common infectious diseases encountered within a hospital setting. Unfortunately, the elusiveness and pathogenicity of Staphylococcus infections make them notoriously difficult to identify and manage. However, with careful clinical assessment, and a little help from ID, treatment of Staphylococcus bacteraemia can be simpler than you think!

Delirium can be seen wherever there are unwell patients, making this a frequently encountered problem in our care of hospitalised patients.

Haematological disorders can be complicated to describe and communicate over the phone. Consequently, structuring succinct haematology referrals can be a common challenge faced by junior doctors. The haemolytic screen comprises of a range of pathological tests to investigate causes of haemolytic anaemia. Yet, the interpretation and application of the haemolytic screen, as well as determining the acuity of the haemolytic anaemia may not always be straightforward. With an endless list of causes for haemolysis, identifying haemolytic anaemia can be particularly difficult, especially for junior doctors covering after hours. However, with detailed history taking, focussed examination and diligent evaluation of investigations, conquering haemolysis may not be as hard as you think!

Lumbar Puncture is a procedure to insert a needle into the lumbar subarachnoid space to collect cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) to diagnose CNS infections or subarachnoid hemorrhage, measure CSF pressure, or administer intrathecal chemotherapy. It could be a nerve-wracking procedure for both the clinician and patient.

The weather has turned, there's a chill in the air and we are definitely in job application season. We learnt a lot in medical school but job application skills were not on the list, unlike in other professions. It's time to move beyond generic applications and exhaustive dot point lists to an achievement focused, strategic presentation that secures the interview for your preferred job.

Iron-deficiency anaemia is one of the most encountered comorbidities in hospital. Optimising iron levels can not only have positive impact on acute illness, but also improve quality of life for patients. Children are usually quite robust - but when they are really unwell it is critical to understand how to manage their care. Their different physiology and anatomy informs a modified approach to the resuscitation algorithm with different priorities and processes than adult ALS.
This two part masterclass gives a practical, detailed breakdown of what a HMO actually needs to understand and do in order to transform that algorithm into life-saving care. In Part 1 we take a deep dive into airway, breathing and circulation - in Part 2 we step through the algorithm and specifically look at how a HMO can most effectively contribute to the team.

ECGs are often taught by rote learning and pattern recognition. A little extra attention to some basic anatomy and electrophysiology however will have your patients' ECGs whispering all their cardiac secrets to you. In this series we will work systematically through the ECG, building new insight and a solid, practical approach to ECG decoding. This episode explains what the cardiac axis is, why it matters, what makes it abnormal, and how to measure it.

The febrile child is an incredibly common presentation whether in GP or ED. The vast majority of these are well children who can safely be discharged home, yet amongst this group there are some serious and even life-threatening illnesses to identify. To up the complexity we are assessing neonates to near- adults, and all with a worried parent to boot.

**COVID has radically transformed what we do and how we do it in hospitals with an extraordinary pace of change. Everything from our shift and team configuration, our movement through the hospital, our patient assessment, entirely new treatments and even right down to what we wear. We're going to be talking with two of our doctors currently working in COVID roles who will provide an insight into everything a junior doctor needs to know to work with COVID.

In this podcast we’re going to be talking about syncope with a particular focus on not missing the serious cardiac causes. We’ll cover what syncope is, its potential causes, how to assess patients, red flags to look for, which patients have to be admitted and which patients get to go home.
Dr Emma Ku will be joined by Dr Jithin Sajeev, one of our Consultant Cardiologists at Eastern Health. Jithin’s subspecialty interests include the management of cardiac rhythm abnormalities and cardiac device implantation. He also runs the syncope clinic at BHH which you’ll hear about further into the podcast. He's a researcher, he's undertaking a PhD in atrial arrhythmias and stroke and he regularly contributes to medical education.
