In the late 1990s, Hollywood was abuzz with the possibility of a film adaptation of Patrick O'Brian's bestselling Aubrey-Maturin series, set during the Napoleonic Wars. With Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany cast in the lead roles, the production team scoured the globe for a ship that could stand in for Jack Aubrey's HMS Surprise. The answer came in the form of the Rose, a meticulously crafted replica of an 18th-century ship, moored in Newport, Rhode Island.
However, there was one problem - the filming was set to take place in Southern California, thousands of miles away from the Rose's current location.
Enter Will Sofrin, a 21-year-old wooden-boat builder and yacht racer, who signed up as the ship's carpenter. Along with a ragtag crew of thirty oddballs, Sofrin embarked on an epic adventure that would test their mettle in ways they never could have imagined.
In his memoir, All Hands on Deck, Sofrin recounts the trials and tribulations of the voyage, from navigating the treacherous waters of the North Atlantic to dealing with the crew's factions and avoiding the pitfalls of shore leave. The Rose, an example of cutting-edge technology in her day, required a level of skill and knowledge that was all but forgotten in the 21st century. The crew effectively went back in time, relying on old-world techniques and working tirelessly to keep the ship afloat.
Despite their best efforts, disaster was never far away. A hurricane-strength storm nearly sank the Rose, and a rogue wave caused a near-fatal dismasting. The crew's camaraderie was put to the test as they struggled to keep the ship and each other alive.
All Hands on Deck is a gripping tale of adventure, resilience, and survival, a must-read for fans of O'Brian's novels and the film adaptation of Master and Commander. Sofrin's memoir is a testament to the human spirit, and a reminder that sometimes the greatest rewards come from taking the biggest risks.

Throughout the interview, it was clear that Andrew has a genuine passion for education and training. His ability to identify gaps in the market and develop courses that address those gaps is a testament to his creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Jess Douglas is a multi-talented artist and skipper who has made a name for herself by painting boats of all shapes and sizes. Her artistic journey began in the city of Plymouth, where she studied illustration and developed an interest in the grunge and grime of the urban environment. However, she eventually found herself drawn back to her hometown, where she started to crew part-time on a local commercial fishing boat.
Working on the fishing boat allowed Jess to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the trade, and she quickly became part of the "family" of local fishermen. However, she lost her inspiration for drawing after leaving her circle of artist friends, and ended up getting her skipper qualification and working as a deckhand on superyachts in the Mediterranean for three seasons.
It was only after 9 years of having "artist's block" that Jess rediscovered her passion for drawing by painting the boat of a skipper she knew. She promoted her work on Facebook and soon began receiving more and more orders from captains and crew to paint their vessels. Over the last 6 and a half years, Jess has painted well over 600 boats and sent her work all over the world.
Her artistic style is unique and captivating, with a focus on capturing the essence of each boat and its surroundings. Her paintings have become sought after by boat owners and enthusiasts, and she has built a thriving business from her passion.

If there was ever a personification of the concept of a "water baby" it would be today's guest on the SHIPSHAPE podcast.
James Evenson grew up on the water, joined the navy at 19, spent 5 years on a submarine, for years he has been documenting his adventures as a mechanic, musician and round the world sailor on his YouTube channel to both entertain and educate and has now started a boat charter business.
He tells us how, to date, he has sailed over 70,000 miles, across both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and has called a boat his home for the last 16 years. As you would expect of someone who has spent so much time on the water, he has an absolute plethora of tales and anecdotes to recount and, at our behest, he does.
He tells of encounters with seemingly fluorescent dolphins and of performing underwater acrobatics with baby whales. Storms, fires and a lovely German couple that replaced all his mooring ropes. And that's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
Hop aboard and learn of what motivates and inspires him to keep on exploring and why he thinks the boating community is, simply put, the best.

It’s time to rev up those engines, because this week on the SHIPSHAPE podcast it’s all about POWER. Joining us is none other than Ken Clinton, President of Intrepid Powerboats. Intrepid is one of the strongest brands in boating, building one-of-a-kind completely bespoke watercrafts.
Originally from Connecticut, and having spent very little time on boats, Ken started out following his father into the murky depths and building submarine engines. When he surfaced, he started at the very beginning, on the shop floor, and is now the sitting President. Many see him as an inspiration and an example that it is still possible to be loyal to what you love and work your way to the very top.
He shares tales of his voyage through the years, from inventing the dive-door back in the 90’s to painting boats the wrong color and even making a baitwell seat ‘sexy’! He also tells us why he attributes his innovation to his clients as much as to his own team, and how people with a craft will end up inheriting the world. Meet Nigel Calder. A man from the south of England with a degree in philosophy. A man who’s obsession with the sea started with skipping a sports day to sail a dinghy in a flooded gravel pit. A man who had to unashamedly bribe his way into his first job on an oil rig.
Decades later, he is also a man who is considered THE boat technician guru and the author of ‘The Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual’ and ‘Marine Diesel Engines’. A man who took some big risks but was determined to make his nautical dream a reality.
This week on the SHIPSHAPE podcast, we talk with Mr. Calder, now located in Maine, about how he went from wrecking his brother's boat in the North Sea to the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and finally, into a publishers office. The knock-on effect of which was being brought on board with the American Boat and Yacht Council to catalog knowledge that met their standards. DISCLAIMER: This podcast contains stories and/or opinions about a college-aged captain, swimming an uncle’s sailboat into shore (on a rope over her shoulder) before it sank, how maritime laws influenced those on land (and, believe it or not, in space) and what crimes against humanity may or may not occur out on the ‘high seas’.

Hark the tale of how she married that passion with her career, going on to be part of the US government's delegation for maritime decisions, playing a part in making actual maritime laws and eventually founding an aptly named legal firm, a nautically-oriented e-learning company and (the crest of the proverbial wave) her own podcast.

Take a deep dive with us this week on the SHIPSHAPE podcast as we talk to Eric Wiberg, ship captain, maritime historian, lawyer and author of no less than 25 (yes, twenty-five) books. Although, the title ‘adventurer’ will seem much more appropriate once you've heard him out!
Bribing pilots to move boat parts, being in charge of 9 ships by the time he was 25, “meeting guys in bars” and near death experiences all contribute to this story playing out rather more like fiction than real life. All the while, wading through the treacherous waters of corruption and accountability in the seafaring realm.
