Cosy in, it's just you and me for a midwinter fireside chat.  Winter Solstice, rest, stillness, the seeds of intention and seasonal self-care in this solo episode.

Yes, I'm going solo for this Christmas episode.  It's my gift to you - the invitation to slow down, take a few moments for yourself and join me for some healing wisdom.

I'm talking sacred rest, the nourishment to be found in the dark time of the year and dreaming of our seeds of intention for the next solar cycle.

I'm also sharing some insights on love and positive regard from my journey as a student psychotherapist.

Enjoy!

In January, I recorded and released a special series of short podcast episodes, after experiencing illness and heartbreak in what felt like a series of trials over the Winter last year.

Listening back, there is wisdom there that I feel is worth sharing again, for those of you who have joined me on this journey since then.

So join me (again) as I weave the thread of my Hero's Journey, a tale of descent and the challenges I faced on my Quest for Sacred Rest over the Winter season last year, and the ultimate transformation to Return the Soul's Light.

Using the archetypes of the Elemental Wheel, I explore the lessons of unravelling and un-becoming that might lead us to a place of rest.

Beginning in Air, the mental body, I now identify this Trial as an autistic meltdown.
Spiralling in reverse around the Wheel, coming next to Earth, the physical body then Water, the emotional body, I share my Trials coming finally to Fire, the Soul body and a re-emergence and integration of wisdom.

This is my gift to you.  I hope you find inspiration and hear your own inner voice calling you home to rest, as I share my story.
Wishing you deep and peaceful rest.

Love Vanessa xx

In this episode, I’m “treating” you something abit different for Samhain, Hallowe’en, the season of the Witch! Bringing together two of my passions - psychology and movies, I am in conversation with my great friend and scholar of screen horror Nathan Glasgow to discuss a fascinating topic - ageing women in horror - the archetype of Witch!

We begin our journey with the character of Bev Keane from Midnight Mass, the latest offering on Netflix from director Mike Flanagan and the subject of Nathans paper on Ageing Women in Horror that he presented at the Crones, Crime and the Gothic Conference this summer. Bevs character challenges the traditional roles that women occupy in horror because she is older. However her character seems to perpetuate some of the stereotypes of older women in society generally, feeding into the distortion of the Crone/Wise Woman archetype

We explore how the four main feminine archetypes of the Goddess Wheel show up in horror - Maiden, Lover, Mother, Crone and how the more shadowy aspects of each of those archetypes are used for story-telling.

Learn about the concept of “Final Girl” in slasher style horror movies, with characters like Laurie Strode from the 1978 classic Halloween and Sidney Prescott from the original Scream movie in 1996. The story arc of the Final Girl can also be found in many women's initiation myths, told now through popular fairy tales - the innocent girl has to experience trials, often in the dark forest which is a common metaphor for transformation, using her resourcefulness to survive and overcome. The catalyst for transformation in these stories is often a Witch, a Crone or a Hag such as Baba Yaga. The girl loses her innocence in this initiation of becoming a woman. However in popular horror series, this element is often lost - the girl is still a girl, there is no lasting change or healthy initiation. This is interesting to observe in the 2022 remake of Halloween where the same character of Laurie is now an adult woman with all the resources at her disposal but she is frozen in the trauma of her childhood experiences with Mike Myers. We also touch on how the innocent girl becomes “masculinised” in this transformation, and one way of looking at this is how she finds the balance of masculine and feminine energies within herself to facilitate her becoming who she needs to be to survive.

Turning our discussions to the portrayal of women's bodies in horror, we consider how the female form can be an object of disgust in horror movies which makes explicit deeply held cultural fears around women’s bodies . Drawing on the double standards of ageing present for men and women across Western society, the ageing female body is rejected and made “other” in horror, often as a cheap or easy scare. Nathan cites the character of Pearl in the 2022 film X, as an example, as well as Nana, the grandmother in The Visit from 2015. We then introduce the various older female characters played by Jessica Lange, an older female actor, in the American Horror Story anthology, particularly the third season Coven where she plays Supreme witch, Fiona Goode, head of the Salem descendents. It highlights another trope for older female characters in that they are often pitted against younger women in a battle for power. However this is a distortion of the healthy process of the Elder handing over wisdom and acquiescing to the younger in the natural circle of life, where older members have a place and value in society.

As a massive horror fan, Nathan shares his picks for what to watch - classics such as the original Halloween, The Thing, the original or most recent Scream films and what to play video game - Dead by daylight. And something gory - the latest Hellraiser. For drama - Trick or Treat and something light - Hocus Pocus 2!

In the third episode of our Seasonal Herbs for Health series, our resident medical herbalist Nicholas Edwards returns to share more wisdom on how plants can support our health in this season of abundance. As plants put their sustaining nutrients and energy into their fruits or roots ahead of the Winter, we can harvest these parts to support our own health.

Nature always gives us what we need for our health in the season and Nicholas spotlights Burdock and Elderberry for supporting our immune system and preventing infections.

Burdock is associated with it’s more famous herbal friend Dandelion, as the soft drink which has it’s roots (pun intended!) in a popular herbal tonic which draws on the complementary benefits of both plants for liver and kidney function. Burdock is particularly helpful at this time of year to support liver function and as the liver plays a vital role in fighting off infections, Burdock can really help us stay well as winter illnesses begin to emerge!

Nicholas reminds us that herbal medicine is taken as a preventative, rather than as a cure when someone is sick. It’s an holistic approach, which assumes good health and works to maintain it rather than fixing a problem like conventional medicines.

He also explains another way that plant medicines are different from pharmaceutical medicines, in that plants don’t have a single specific action in the body like synthetic medicines but will act across a system, perhaps focussing on one organ with benefits to the whole system. Recognising all the systems in our bodies are connected and interacting, Elderberry is a great example of this.

Elderberry is absolutely the best herbal remedy for boosting our immune system. Often taken with Echinacea which is known for preventing colds and minor winter illnesses, Elderberry has a long traditional use to treat fevers, cold/flu symptoms and respiratory illnesses. It has more recently been subject to scientific investigation for its antiviral properties, in relation to Covid-19.

Take Elderberry as a liquid tincture, usually available from a herbalist and health food shops. Also make Elderberry Rob at home from foraged berries. By adding sugar to the Rob, you can make a syrup which is less sour and the sugar also acts as a preservative.
Sambukus tablets can often be found in supermarket - not Sambuka, although it is derived from the same plant
And Nicholas’s personal favourite - elderberry, echinacea and garlic! Garlic has lots of benefits for the body and is used to prevent and treat infections.

Nicholas’s advice for seasonal self care:

  • Establish a routine with your herbal medicines, take them regularly. Good advice generally and also goes with the themes of order and discernment for Autumn
  • Prioritise sleep, the greatest healer and restorative activity!
  • Increase vitamin C and zinc in your diet or through supplements

Vanessa's advice for seasonal self care

  • Have a clear out - mental and physical. What thoughts and things might be holding me back?
  • Set some intention for new routines to support myself into the winter, using ritual if you like

As always, if the Red Thread of Fate is drawing you towards these themes, you're invited to connect with Nicholas through his various platforms:

Hello and welcome, wisdom seeker! I'm Vanessa, Priestess of Rhiannon, psychologist, artist, celebrant and weaver of The Red Thread. Join me and my guests as we tread our mysterious path through the labyrinth, that liminal space where psychology, spirituality and magic entwine!

In this episode, my special guest is Katinka Soetens Priestess of Avalon and of Rhiannon, Goddess of Love; Co-creator of the Goddess Conference, Founding member of Temple of Avalon, Director of the Path of Love Mystery School teaching the sacred mysteries of indigeneous spirituality in Celtic European lands; leading Goddess-loving people to come into union and reclaim their sovereign power!

This episode was recorded before the death of Her Majesty the Queen. As we discuss the seasonal archetype of the Sovereign, I would like to honour her life in service as Sovereign.

Join Katinka and I as we explore the themes of the Autumn Equinox, Mabon in the Celtic Wheel of the Year and a time of harvest in the lands of the Northern hemisphere. What treasures, intentions and plans were planted in Spring that we now gather as our Harvest in Autumn? As we stand on the threshold of the dark half of the year once more, what are we grateful for, what gifts will we carry forward with us and what will we let go? A time of balance and of discernment - discerning your own gifts and offerings to others as well as what you have received in your life over the last year.

Katinka offers some deeply layered wisdom for the archetype of this season, the Sovereign - our inner Queen and King, this archetype reminds us that we are responsible for our realm and everything within it, inviting us towards introspection and ownership of the darker parts of ourselves that we may have rejected, as well as the healthy setting of boundaries.

Hear about Katinkas personal journey to become a Priestess of the Goddess, how she was chosen by Celtic Goddess of Love Rhiannon in a Beltane ceremony and learn more about her work now, as a teacher and a leader in reawakening Goddess spirituality. Her fierce humility is inspiring as she reminds all of us who are on a path of transformation that we are all human and we can only do our best, and that spiritual leadership is about responsibility, consciousness and awareness raising.

A beautiful treat at the end as she shares part of her teachings on the Queen and King and generously offers our closing Blessing of Rhiannon and of the abundance of the harvest season.

This episode was a true gift to record and I am deeply grateful for Katinkas presence. In turn, I offer it out as a gift to you and hope you enjoy listening!

In this episode, my special guest is Jade Dalton. Jade is a psychic, healer, accredited Equality and Diversity tutor, LGBGTQi advocate, Sacred Celebrant offering life changing ceremonies and Priestess of Persephone.

We’re diving deep in this episode, balancing the outward energy of the zenith of the sun with the inner emotional work in the dark and watery depths of our psyche.

Jade is a professional psychic, an oracle for the messages from the Divine. She works with the Goddess Persephone to become a conduit for what the Divine wants to express for clients who come to her. Holding liminal space for those at a cross-roads seeking transformation, helping them to access their own internal wisdom which is also, ultimately Divine.

Jade’s journey to becoming a Priestess was shown to her through oracle work and when she connected to Persephone, her psychic abilities opened up and after a trip to Greece to connect with her more fully, she dedicated fully as her Priestess. Whilst she trained in the Priestess arts, her dedication was through her own deep personal connection rather than through an earthly teacher. Something we can all do to follow the invitation of a deity or presence is to open more fully to that and ask for that connection!

Summer Solstice in June in the UK coincides with Pride celebrations, which honour the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan and promote self-affirmation, dignity, equality and visibility of queer rights. Jade shares and reminds us that everyone wants to be loved and shine their light and, like the sun at this time of year, we can celebrate our identity and the diversity in our communities without shading others. Honouring, holding and respect is what we are all seeking and we can achieve this when we approach each person with a beginners mind.

Jade also shares her personal lived experience of ADHD, particularly the challenges she faced in the traditional workplace and how she thrives now creating her own work environment playing to her strengths. We discuss the sense of acceptance that neurodiverse people feel in minority spiritual groups and how neurodiversity often aligns with magical and other-worldly experiences because we experience the world so differently to others.

Listen to the end to find inspiration for self-care in this season with a beautiful water ceremony to release anything that is stuck within us. Sacred movement and the celebration of our bodies in dance can also be a delicious way to flow with the element of water and let go. Celebrating and owning the fullness of our identity, feeling Pride in ourselves and our communities at this time of year.

In the second episode of our Seasonal Herbs for Health series, our resident medical herbalist Nicholas Edwards returns to share wisdom on “Tree treats” as healing plants for Summer.

For this season of Summer, Nicholas spotlights some popular trees as the plants that Nature gives us for health at this time of year, specifically Hawthorn and Linden.

Did you know these trees are both great for the heart and circulation?

The hawthorn tree has a rich folklore and a long association with the triple Goddess and the Fae! It symbolises liminal spaces as it is often found as a guardian of hedgerows and ancient edge places.

Hawthorn is the superlative heart remedy. It is a cardio tonic, thought to strengthen the coronary arteries and support the flow of oxygen to the heart so it’s great for congestive heart issues.

Linden or Lime Blossom is wonderful for controlling high blood pressure, known to be a contributing factor to heart disease and stroke. Its heart-shaped leaves are Natures way to show us how it can benefit our heart health!

We also look ahead to the Summer Solstice, Litha in the Pagan Wheel of the Year which is commonly celebrated as a mid-summer holiday across Europe as we consider the importance of seasonal rituals on the land to reconnect us with Nature. Touching on the topic of ecopsychology and the pros and cons of “prescribing” Nature in the context of conventional medicine, we are reminded that herbal medicine is a complementary holistic therapy that works differently to conventional medicine.

I also mention my Meet the Goddess workshop and the Litha Ceremony at the Solstice camp in June, follow the link below to find out more:

Hello and welcome, wisdom seeker! I'm Vanessa, Priestess of Rhiannon, psychologist, artist, celebrant and weaver of The Red Thread. Join me and my guests as we tread our mysterious path through the labyrinth, that liminal space where psychology, spirituality and magic entwine!

In this episode my special guest is Mirjam Diane of The Priestess Life School in the Netherlands. Mirjam is a Priestess, pagan theologian - scholar of the Goddess, teacher and sacred sexuality coach. She is a sister Priestess of Rhiannon, my great friend and inspiration - working with women to embrace their Divine Feminine nature and live their fullest life!

It’s our juiciest episode yet! Celebrating Beltane, the gateway to Summer in the Northern Hemisphere when Nature is beginning to blossom, the birds and bees are alive and the Goddess is in her aspect as Lover! My personal favourite of all the seasons because Rhiannon, Celtic Goddess of Love represents Beltane in the Avalonian Wheel of the Year and I am her Priestess, in service to Love in Action!

A central symbolic theme of this festival is of love, union and connection - both with our lovers, it is traditionally a time for handfastings, ancient marriage rites - and within ourselves, connecting those parts of ourselves that are separate - our soul reconnecting with our body, our ideas being given form, the inner marriage of our own energies of masculine and feminine essences coming together. A divine union of polarities, of opposites which is a key aspect of sacred sexuality, of coming into wholeness again.

Mirjams shares her insights from working with the sacred nature of love, sex and pleasure, how sexual energy is life force energy and therefore not separate from our daily lives. In ancient traditions, sexual energy was healing energy, bringing separated parts of ourselves into union and wholeness. Much of this has been lost through conditioning, control and taboo in modern society.

Learn about how we, as aspects of Nature, are connected with the sensuality of this season - the explosion of colour and scent as flowers begin to bloom after winter and the creatures of the earth seek their mates. Mirjam describes how we can feel more alive by tuning in to that energy in our bodies, creating sacred spaces where we feel safe enough to open our senses, feel the flow of life energy and inviting more love, pleasure, bliss and joy that is the abundance and fullness of Nature. Celebrating ourselves, just as we are.

Hear Mirjams personal story of becoming a Priestess of Love, her work also with Mary Magdalene as an archetype for the lover and for sacred sexuality. Feel inspired by ideas to reconnect with your own inner lover energy, to feel the love for your lover, and your loved ones and experience the delicious sensuality of Nature, recognising we are part of this wonderful flow of life. Ah, the beautiful medicine of Love!

Thank you Mirjam for sharing in English and also with some beautiful Dutch words too! Listen to the end to hear a beautiful, sensual prayer and blessing for Beltane, what a treat!

In this episode, my special guest is Nicholas Edwards, medical herbalist, ethno-botanist; amateur linguist; pagan and all round magical being! He will appear as a regular guest sharing wisdom on plants for healing and health as the wheel of the year turns, with tips on the medicine of Nature for each season. This is his first episode and a wonderful opportunity to get to know him better as we discuss his journey to become a healer and herbalist - reclaiming his passion and power during the pandemic, to open his practise based in Bristol in the UK.

For this season of Spring, Nicholas highlights Nettle; Chickweed and Cleavers or Goose-grass as the plants that Nature gives us for health at this time of year. Did you know these can all be eaten as vegetables? They are full of nutrients and are also used in cooling and cleansing remedies, balancing the fiery energy of this season by supporting the body to release and clear itself from the stagnation of winter.

With some insights about the potent remedies of gemmotherapy, using the buds and shoots of plants and trees to benefit from the concentration of growth chemicals for healing.

And some handy tips and reminders on foraging and gathering wild plants, including how to pick nettles without getting stung!

In this episode, my special guest is Benjamin Selby, Priest of Jesus and of the Goddess; Druid; Shamanic Practitioner, Biker and Sacred Celebrant.

Together we explore the seasonal themes of Hope and Light, rebirth and resurrection, energies held by the Pagan festival of Ostara at the Spring Equinox and by the Christian Festival of Easter. Ben offers a bridge between these two faith paths having been ordained as an Anglican vicar and now both a Priest of Jesus and of the Goddess, he weaves together these two often opposing belief systems. We hear his incredible story, a Hero’s Journey - from refusing the call, meeting his mentor, through the tests to the supreme ordeal, the road back and now the symbolic return with the sacred elixir. Bens unique insight and experience, shared by him with humour and real enthusiasm for the up and downs, the joy and the sadness he experienced, offers all of us the opportunity to reflect how we can hold opposites on our own path to the Divine. Through this incredible story, the constant inspiration, connection and solace of Nature provides wisdom, nourishment, peace and hope for the emerging future.

It’s a long one but compelling so I hope you enjoy hearing these messages as much as I have. Do listen to end for tips on how to honour the themes of this season and of course our closing prayers and blessings.

In this episode, my special guest is Dr Amelie Rowan Summer - Priestess of Brigid, Pagan, Druid, teacher of Eco-Spirituality, sacred celebrant and spiritual life coach!

Learn about the mythology of Brigid as Pagan Druid Goddess and Christian Saint, the sacred symbolism of her emergence as the herald of Spring at Imbolc on 1st February. Working with the archetype of Maiden and what that means in modern neo-paganism - sovereignty, authenticity and our wild natural selves!

Amelie shares her personal journey with Brigid and the energies of Imbolc, embodying Brigid as Goddess of Smithcraft at this seasonal, cross-quarter fire festival celebrating the re-awakening of Light. In her work as a ceremonialist and celebrant, Amelie creates sacred liminal space for healing with her ceremonial journeys. As a teacher and coach, she walks with those on a nature-based spiritual path to explore and facilitate their connection with the Earth and the Divine.

Feel inspired by her ideas for celebrating Imbolc and join us together in a closing prayer of gratitude to Brigid, Wild Maiden of Imbolc and the Returning Light.

The fourth and final challenge our hero encounters on her Quest for Sacred Rest, is in the spiritual energy body.  The realm of Soul and our inner Divine spark, represented in our story-telling Wheel as the Element of Fire in the South.
The lesson and medicine of resting with this element is to invite Connection.  Showing how small acts of creativity can help us reconnect with ourselves, even when we feel we're in the dark.  Rest invites expansion, creating space like a void which draws in the nourishment we need.  Encouraging the flame of our passions, following the trail of sparks will eventually lead us back to the light our Soul.

Trigger Warning - in this episode I talk about death and the loss of a beloved pet

The third challenge our hero encounters on her Quest for Sacred Rest, is in the emotional energy body.  The realm of Heart, our emotions and the unconscious, represented in our story-telling Wheel as the Element of Water in the South
The lesson and medicine of resting with this element is to let go of resistance to Feeling.  Showing how resting into our emotions, feeling what we are feeling in each moment, can be deeply healing.  Even in grief for the loss of a loved one, opening to the flow of emotions prevents us becoming stuck in heaviness.   Surrendering to the depth of our feeling helps us experience the beauty of mingled joy and sadness.  Here, rest encourages compassion to ourselves and others by making space to feel love.

The first challenge our hero encounters on her Quest for Sacred Rest, is in the mental energy body.  The realm of Mind and our thoughts, represented in our story-telling Wheel as the Element of Air in the North.
The lesson and medicine of resting with this element is to slow down our Thinking.  Showing how rest and reflection are necessary for processing thoughts and rebooting our brains.  A natural part of the cycle of life but not necessarily relaxing or restful as we hope!

The second challenge our hero encounters on her Quest for Sacred Rest, is in the physical energy body.  The realm of Body and our physical health, represented in our story-telling Wheel as the Element of Earth in the West.
The lesson and medicine of resting with this element is to let go of Doing.  Showing how physical rest and relaxation are essential for being present.  Allowing ourselves to slow down, albeit often through physical illness, helps us tune into our bodies needs and the parts of our selves that have become separated, isolated by our busy-ness.

The Quest for Sacred Rest and the Return of the Soul's Light

A grim and dark Winter's tale, told over 4 short episodes.
An unwilling hero (heroine, actually), endures 4 elemental trials on their quest for sacred rest.

This is actually a true story, my story of the last 6 weeks over Yule.  I was hoping for a cosy, snuggly December relaxing into a restful, restorative state.  What I got was a series of trials, as the elemental forces symbolically deconstructed my energetic bodies - first my mental body, then my physical body, my emotional body to expose my soul.

As with all great hero's journey,  the challenges were necessary for the descent into the Abyss - death followed by rebirth; revelation to achieve transformation.
Hear each of my trials with the 4 elements and celebrate my ultimate return with the wisdom I received,  shared in these episodes as my gift to you and my offering to the Goddess for her grace.

Blessed be x
