Many of us have something we're hiding, something we're ashamed of, something that through no fault of our own happens to us/for us and we keep ourselves hidden from each other and the world. I was scammed out of A LOT of money in an online romance scam and found that owning it gave me courage! We need to educate ourselves to Beware and Be Aware! "The Call" came from David Medansky's doctor. "You have a 95% chance of having a heart attack. You must lose 50 pounds or you will die. You have two choices now. Either lose the weight or get another doctor."
OMG. What's a guy to do?
Fortunately David did what he "should do" and he lost the 50 pounds. My late husband didn't heed the call and he passed away from a massive heart attack at age 55.

What do your parents do when you're diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis? Bethany Bryan's parents took a deep breath and then prepared for the worse but always told their daughter that she wasn't CF and she could do whatever she wanted to do. Good advice for the 15-plus years the CF didn't present a problem and then...Bethany was truly a woman behind the smile and never told her friends that she was struggling to breathe. Her parents battled their own mental health issues and her "problems" were small compared to theirs. She believed her FEARS were bigger than her sickness and she just had to conquer the fears, so she did until she couldn't. Her solution? Stop the traditional medications for CF and LET GOD. Soon she realized that dying wasn't part of THE PLAN for her life and she let GOD bring new medications into her life. Today she is thriving and telling her story through her new book, My Story Continues. This is one Stand Up & Speak Up story that needs to be heard. According to the Mayo Clinic, Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body. Cystic fibrosis affects the cells that produce mucus, sweat and digestive juices. These secreted fluids are normally thin and slippery. But in people with CF, a defective gene causes the secretions to become sticky and thick. Instead of acting as lubricants, the secretions plug up tubes, ducts and passageways, especially in the lungs and pancreas. Although cystic fibrosis is progressive and requires daily care, people with CF are usually able to attend school and work. They often have a better quality of life than people with CF had in previous decades. Improvements in screening and treatments mean that people with CF now may live into their mid- to late 30s or 40s, and some are living into their 50s. It's a Happy Birthday day on Stand Up & Speak Up with Debby Montgomery Johnson and special guest Angela Schutz provides the entertainment! Nine decades-plus can teach you a lot about life, but an hour with your 92 year old DAD will feed your soul forever. This Stand Up & Speak Up episode was another Labor of Love for me and for our family. Too many of my friends lament the passing of their parents but more wish they had another hour, or another phone call with their folks. "If only" is what I was hearing and I didn't want to have those regrets. Dr. Jack Butz has led an extraordinary life. His father passed at 46 years old and Jack lived in a home with "lot of women" which included his mom, his aunt, his sister and a friend of hers, and probably some other "old ladies" that I'm missing. There was no "free ride" for Jack and he put himself through the University of PA and Penn Dental School. The Air Force provided a good starting point for his career as a dentist but life in Woodstock, Vermont cemented his "working years" until his retirement to Florida. Author of "My 50 Golden Years", Dr. Jack chronicles the lives of his 10 special Golden Retrievers and he admits that his last one, Angel, was his favorite. Family history took on a golden spin when he wrote about the dogs (births/deaths) and threw in nuggets about his four children! Seeing the world through the eyes of a gentle GIANT who has seen it all the last 92 years was tender yet realistic. Did she work outside of the home or was she a SAHM? My folks have been married since 1955 and they're fortunately still happy, healthy, and of sound mind. Too many of my friends are realizing they can't ever get that hour with mom back either because she's passed (transitioned beyond the veil) or is living with diminished memories. I wanted to let my mom SHINE and for once in her life be the center of MY attention and she was and I'm so grateful. I encourage you all to ask the questions you've never asked (within reason!) and then LISTEN to the gems that will come out. Our Women of Wisdom (WOW, MOMs upside down!) are aging, as are we, and there is so much to learn. All in all, life goes by too quickly and don't you want to know who was the FAVORITE child!!!

SHE was a former Detective in the Sexual Assault Department in the Nashville Metro Police Department and she was trained to protect others but when faced with her own attacker, she felt hopeless and defeated afterwards. Wanting to crawl under a rock and hide (The Woman Behind The Smile) Greta faced depression and near suicide when she saw #MeToo and knew she wasn't alone anymore. Anyone calling YOU saying they are "Agent XYZ from Interpol" is a scammer. Interpol is NOT going to contact individuals. Beware and Be Aware.

Today's special Stand Up & Speak Up is a conversation with "Ms. Texas" a survivor of an online relationship scam. This scam started off with playing a game on Words with Friends and a "mutual friend" became our survivor's "love" and then worst nightmare. For the first time we went into a courtroom (The Eastern District of Texas) as members of The Society of Citizens Against Relationship Scams (SCARS) as our survivor presented her Victim Impact Statement to the Judge, the Prosecutors, the FBI, ICE, the Defense team, and the SCAMMER.
This is a survivor's story - each is different and unique in some aspects but ALWAYS similar in overall scope and format. Relationship fraud is a CRIME against a victim/survivor and telling our stories, Standing Up & Speaking Up, is an important step in the recovery process.
Our special guest today became a hero/SHERO to the millions of survivors around the world who will probably never have the opportunity to tell their stories in a courtroom and who will never feel justice prevails. But we can live vicariously through this story and celebrate the outcome. One small step for victims in Texas will lead to one GIANT step against relationship fraud across the globe!
