In this episode, Grant Johnstone is joined by one of Victoria’s most prolific news anchors for Channel 7’s Nightly News – Peter Mitchell.

Peter has been involved in television news for more than 40 years as a reporter, producer, writer and presenter, and producer.

Growing up locally in Victoria, peter always had a love for all sports, including cricket and football leading him to his first sports anchor in 1977. In 1982, Peter became a general news reporter and in this position, he covered many stories including Victoria's horrific Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983, leading to his prominent role as the weekend news presenter and weekday news reporter at HSV 7 in 1987.

Peter has been the weeknight anchor for Melbourne’s Seven Nightly News since 2001, etching his space as one of Australia’s most renowned and celebrated news anchors.

In this episode, Grant Johnstone is joined by singer, actor and TV presenter -  Frankie J Holden. 

During the course of his diverse career on stage and screen, Frankie J Holden has become a household name. 

He began his show business career with the legendary rock group “OL’55”, one of the most successful Australian recording acts of all time, before creating some of Australian television’s most memorable characters through leading roles in long-running serials: Blue Heelers, Police rescue, Underbelly and more recently playing the fantastic character Roy Briggs on A Place to Call Home which earned him the Most Outstanding Supporting Actor at the 2019 Logies. 

In 2016, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the arts as an entertainer and to the community of the Sapphire Coast. He has worked in various television presenting roles and appeared in over thirty films both here and overseas and still performs across the nation.

In this episode, Grant Johnstone is joined by AFL Umpire #18, "Razor" Ray Chamberlain.

Ray Chamberlain has umpired over 340 AFL matches across 17 seasons, including three AFL Grand Finals.   2010, 2010 replay and 2019.

Outside of football he worked in secondary education and in recent years saw an opportunity to combine his successful background in education with his passion for finance as the Founder and Director of Chamberlain and Co.

He is also a founding member of the Chamberlain Foundation, which raises funds to provide support for suicide prevention and mental health awareness.

In this episode host, Grant Johnstone chats with the driving force behind one of Australia's best know and loved bands. Brian Canham from Pseudo Echo.

Brian grew up in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and formed Pseudo Echo in 1982 with high school friend Pierre Gigliotti.

Pseudo Echo scored seven Top 10 hit singles on the Australian pop radio charts and was one of the most popular groups in Australia in the mid-80s. 

In 1986 Pseudo Echo had their biggest international success with an exciting and inspired cover of Lipps Inc.'s catchy disco soul anthem, "Funkytown." 

And apart from a hiatus in the 90s have been touring and releasing great music ever since.

Our guest in this episode has lived through tragedy and loss that no parent should experience.  Rosie Batty AO.

Her role as a domestic violence campaigner began in 2014 after her 11-year-old son Luke was murdered by his father in Tyabb. 

Rosie’s story jolted Australia into recognising that family violence can happen to anyone and is unfortunately far more common than we think. Her courage and willingness to speak out has made Australia a far better place. 

In 2015 Rosie was recognised as the Australian of the Year.  Then in 2019, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours.

From starting life as a graphic designer, Leo has spent nearly 50 years writing, producing and singing the soundtrack of pop music. His first hit single came in 1973 with "The Show Must Go".  Since those early days, he has had a huge string of hit singles and albums across the globe.... with more on the way.

Who can forget some of Leo's sensational hits: One man band Long tall glasses (I can dance) Moonlighting You make me feel like dancing When I need you How much love Thunder in my heart And more.....

Whilst being born on the UK, Leo has called Australia home since 2005 and became an Australian Citizen in 2009.

In this episode, host Grant Johnstone is joined by former Premier of Victoria Dr Denis Napthine AO.

From growing up in South Western Victoria, Denis Napthine has a masters degree in Veterinary Science, Epidemiology and Business Administration. He was first elected into State Parliament in 1988 as the Member for Portland. Then in March 2013 he became leader of the Victorian parliamentary Liberal Party and was made Victoria’s 47th Premier.

The former Premier and veterinarian has had his life’s achievements recognised in the honour of Officer in the Order of Australia (AO).  The citation says the award is “for distinguished service to the people and Parliament of Victoria, particularly as Premier, to veterinary science, and to the community”.

Dr Napthine, now retired in Port Fairy, spent 27 years in the Victorian Parliament, as member for Portland (1988 to 2002), and member for South-West Coast (2002 to 2015).

In this episode, Grant Johnstone is joined by Archie Thompson.

Archie Thompson is Australian football royalty who spent the majority of his career with Melbourne Victory FC. In his illustrious career, he went on to win 3 championships and 2 prestigious Victory Medals, the highest honour awarded by the club. 

Archie made over 50 appearances for Australia, scoring 28 goals for the Socceroos. He played a pivotal role in the 2005 qualification games against Uruguay, which saw Australia break a 35-year drought and his 13-goal haul against American Samoa in 2001 remains a World record.

Now forging a career in media, Archie hopes to inspire others by sharing his own life’s journey.

In this episode, Grant Johnstone is joined by AFL legend Malcolm Blight AM. 

Blighty's list of accolades is extensive. Consistently one of the most brilliant players in the VFL during the 1970s, he won two premierships as a player with Nth Melbourne (1975 & 77) and twice as a coach of Adelaide (1997 & 98). 

Malcolm Blight AM is one of only three players to have won the Brownlow Medal and the Magarey Medal, an inaugural inductee Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996 and was elevated to Legend status in 2017. 

An amazing playing career was followed by a 20 year coaching career that saw him coach 300 games across 5 clubs, and a continuation of his football involvement through the media as a commentator and co-host.

Sally began her career as a solicitor, after completing Law (Hons) and Commerce degrees at the University of Melbourne.

Sally has worked in businesses big and small. Sally has held senior roles at both KPMG and ANZ, and she took the small business she co-founded to the ASX.

A passionate Magpie, in 2004 she made history as the first female board member of Collingwood FC. She is involved in a number of charities, currently sitting on the board of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute, the Mary Jane Lewis Scholarship Foundation and the Melbourne University Faculty of Business and Economics.

Sally Capp was re-elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne in October 2020 after having previously been elected in May 2018 and was the first woman to be directly elected as Lord Mayor.

Jacqui has been helping elite sportspeople and organisations for the best part of 20 years. Specialising in athletic transitions in and out of elite sport, eating disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, performing arts and children’s sport. 

Clinically Jacqui works extensively with people suffering from depression and anxiety, pain management and sleeping issues, relationships, and general life balance. The list of sporting clubs, organisations and events that Jacqui has and is working with is extensive.

From being the Village Psychologist at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006 to working with Melbourne Phoenix, Melbourne Storm, Collingwood Football Club and even the National Institute of Circus Arts.

She also works as a Sport & Performance Psychologist with Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre.

In this episode, host Grant Johnstone is joined by legendary Australian basketball player and coach - Lindsay Gaze.

Lindsay played basketball for Australia in three Summer Olympics qualification tournaments, between 1960 and 1968, and was the head coach of the senior Australian basketball team at four Summer Olympics, between 1972 and 1984.

He also coached the Melbourne Tigers for 35 years, including 22 seasons in the NBL. He was the NBL Coach of the Year in 1989, 1997 and 1999, and is second all-time in the number of coaching wins in that league. 

Lindsay is a member of the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame, as both a player and coach and, is an associate member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.  He has also been inducted into both the FIBA Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, as a coach.

In this episode, Grant Johnstone is joined by radio and TV personality Glenn Ridge. From his early days on regional radio in the late 70's, Glenn's TV career began in Bendigo hosting his music and children's shows that aired across regional Victoria and Southern New South Wales.

Then in 1991, he joined the Nine Network as host of the primetime quiz show Sale of the Century, where he stayed for 10 years. He also had a couple of stints back on Melbourne radio on 1377 3MP.

These days Glenn has his own media company and is a huge supporter of Australian motorsport regularly competes in tarmac and off-road races including the Targa Tasmania and Western Australia’s Targa.

For over 30 years, Les has been one of Australia’s best-known youth outreach workers and social campaigners. Tackling issues ranging from homelessness, drug abuse, prison reform and social welfare.

The Les Twentyman Foundation is dedicated to supporting our at-risk youth.  Through a variety of programs designed to help them get back on their feet and reconnect with the wider community. It's a fabulous organisation!

Les has devoted his life to young people doing it tough. Along the journey he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 1994, Australian of the Year 'Finalist' in 2004 and Victorian of the Year in 2006.

With a career spanning 60 years,  he was The founding frontman of The Twilights, Axiom and The Little River Band.

He has been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame on two occasions, both as a member of LRB and as a solo artist.

In this episode, Grant Johnstone is joined by the incredible marathon swimmer - Tammy van Wisse 

Most people fly around the world, some board a ship, but this week’s guest has seen the world by swimming 1 ½ times around it!Tammy has swum over 65,000 kilometres and has set 6 World Records, 5 of them still current. She has also established a new record in lifesaving by successfully winning the Royal Lifesaving Victorian Ironwoman title for a record 17 years in a row. Now, Tammy owns Swimland Swim School, an ambassador for the ‘Play it Safe’ by the water campaign and involved in ‘Water Safety Week’ for many years.

TAMMY’S WORLD RECORDS 1996: the first to swim Bass Strait (97.4 km in 17 hours and 46 minutes)… it took her 84,000 freestyle strokes from Tasmania’s King Island to Apollo Bay. For nearly 70 years Peter's design influence has shaped the look of Melbourne. 

From the Olympic Swimming Pool used for the 1956 games to Melbourne’s Parliament station, the Jam Factory in South Yarra as well as the creation of the Dinner Plain alpine village near Mount Hotham.

In 1973 he, and his business partner, wrote the Strategy Plan for the City of Melbourne, which limited high rise development to its eastern and western shoulders. Creating the iconic rising look of the Melbourne skyline. \

At 93 years old, Peter’s list of architectural and academic achievements is unparalleled and he holds the titles of AO, DArch, BArch, DipArch, DipTRP, LFRAIA, FRAPI, FAIA and Emeritus Professor of Architecture - University of Melbourne.

This week we are joined by Australian musician, record producer and record-maker - Gil Matthews. As a member of Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs and Mondo Rock, Gil has played with some of the biggest names in Australia music.

He talks about the crazy days playing around the world with The Aztecs.

His passion for music started very early. He was drumming at the DOWNBEAT concerts at Melbourne town hall, playing with the 30 piece band and doing solo appearances as an eight-year-old.By the time I was 10, a US tour had been arranged so that he could appear with legendary American Jazz drummers Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa.

He turned 11 during that 6-month tour which finished up at Disney Studios in Los Angeles for an appearance on the Mickey Mouse Club TV show, where he became the only Australian “Honorary” Mousekateer.

As a player, David played 211 senior games with Hawthorn which included captaining the 1971 Premiership side. He spent twenty-four years as Senior Coach across three clubs for a total of 518 games including four premierships as coach of Hawthorn and then Carlton. He was State Director of Coaching for the Victorian Football Development Foundation and was State Coach in 1979, 1982-83 and 1989-1990.

David’s academic achievements include developing and lecturing in the Sports Coaching Degree course at Deakin University.

In March 2009, David was diagnosed with prostate cancer which has become a life mission to spread the word and raise money for Prostate Cancer research.  He is patron, and an active participant in the "The Male Bag Foundation" which began in July 2011, when a couple of men looking for an adventure decided that it would be a good idea to ride from Perth to Melbourne on postie bikes.

In this episode, host Grant Johnstone is joined by one of Australia's most respected news anchors and sports commentators - George Donikian.

George grew up speaking Greek, Armenian and even a little Turkish from his grandmother. George did not speak English until the age of 7. His radio career kicked off in far North Queensland in the mid-1970s, then on to 2WL in Wollongong, 2WS in Sydney and  FIVEaa in Adelaide.

George's television career began in 1980, when during a chance meeting he impressed Bruce Gyngell, who saw him as the ideal presenter for his multi cultural I.M.B.C television Network which launched in Melbourne and Sydney in 1980.  Then he was a presenter for SBS World News, then as a newsreader for the Nine Network, and later Ten News.

When George first presented Ten News in 1991, he presented the weeknight bulletin solo before being joined by Nikki Dwyer the following year. And more recently across digital platforms like the online news and current affairs broadcaster The Informer.

He was the voice of the Olympic Soccer Tournament held at the MCG, during the Sydney Games in 2000, and the voice of Telstra Dome, during the Rugby World Cup in 2003. He also covered the opening ceremony and the Athens Olympics for Melbourne commercial radio in 2004.

And is even a former President of the amazing South Melbourne Football Club based at Bob Jane Stadium in Albert Park.

In this episode, Grant Johnstone is joined by Paul Dimattina.

Paul played for Richmond at Under 19 level as a 16 year in 1991 and was drafted by them with the final selection in the 1991 AFL draft. Drafted by the Footscray Football Club (later Western Bulldogs) with the 26th selection in the 1995 Pre-season draft, Dimattina made his AFL debut late in the 1995 season.

Dimattina was a high possession winner for the Bulldogs throughout his career. He played 131 games for the Bulldogs until he was delisted at the end of the 2003 season.

In 2005, Dimattina moved to the Gold Coast, Queensland, where he played with the Southport Sharks. He scored six goals and best afield in the Queensland State League Grand Final before retiring from the Sharks and returning to Melbourne.

Following his football career, Dimattina became involved in the hospitality industry. He and his family own and run the Dimattina's and Il Gambiro restaurants in Lygon Street, Carlton, Society Restaurant in Melbourne City, the Blue Train cafe at Southgate in Southbank, as well as two restaurants on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

Before that very first moustache changed everything back in 2003, Travis Garone was a creative who quickly made a name for himself doing what he loved - bringing artistic concepts to life for youth-driven surfing, skateboarding and music brands. 

Then, a chance conversation in a Melbourne bar about the dying art of the moustache accidentally led Trav and his mate Lucky to launch Movember – which soon became a leading force championing men’s health the world over.  

As well as Movember, Trav is also the co-founder of cult streetwear label Doomsday and creative agency People Make Progress. It was Trav’s experience tapping into a youth culture that was the driving force behind Movember’s brand, helping to make the movement appealing and popular with young men – something that was unparalleled in the charity sector at the time.  

Trav has created countless street art, murals, graffiti artworks and installations, as well as collaborating on creative projects in all over the world - from LA to Japan and the UK – and even created a new character with Adam Hargreaves for the beloved Mr Men series. Changing the Face of Men’s Health One MO at a Time Movember Co-Founder Travis Garone kickstarted a global movement around men’s health 16 years ago.

Since 2003, they’ve raised AUD 1.04 billion to battle prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. Together with a community 5 million strong, they’re looking to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25% by 2030.

In this episode, Grant Johnstone is joined by Australia music legend Brian Cadd AM.

Brian Cadd's career began with the iconic Australian band The Groop in 1966 and he wrote all of their many hit singles and albums including Woman You’re Breaking Me and Such A Lovely Way. He then formed Axiom with Glenn Shorrock, heavily influenced by The Band and dubbed Australia’s first supergroup, he was the primary songwriter and penned hits including Little Ray of Sunshine, Arkansas Grass and My Baby’s Gone before the band broke up in England in 1969. 

Returning to Australia he joined Fable Records as head of A&R and chief producer. Fable launched a rock label called Bootleg Records in 1972 and Brian ran the label as well as being its’ first artist. 

The label became the most successful independent record company in the history of Australian popular music up to that time. The next few years saw many gold and platinum records as a solo artist and an array of prestigious awards for film scores, title songs and TV themes. In addition, he produced many acts and wrote much-loved hits including Ginger Man, Let Go, Don’t You Know It’s Magic and Alvin Purple. 

In 2007 he was inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame and in the same year was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2018 he was awarded an Order of Australia (AM), which he described as an “amazingly different kind of honour”.

Fred is a wonderful success story.  He began his career as a casual with Ritchies in 1975 whilst still at Frankston High School.  He worked his way up to management; was appointed as General Manager in 1987 and then as Chief Executive Officer in 1994.

This year Ritchies celebrates 150 years of continuous service to their customers and local communities across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Fred Harrison understands better than most, the essential ingredients that make Australian retailers successful.  Upon his appointment as CEO, Fred recognised the stores needed a fresh outlook to stay current and for the business to continue to grow.  With the assistance of a great team, he set about reinvigorating existing stores with upgrades and remodels, providing competitive pricing, specialising in fresh foods and ensuring store standards are equal or better to that of the chains. 

Fred also talks passionately about Ritchies providing clear points of differences compared to the chains and he is proud to lead the company in its vision to be the “Friendliest Team in the Supermarket and Liquor Industry.”  The Community Benefit program is a key element of Ritchies continued success.

To date, more than $50 million has been donated back into the community, from customers signing up to support a local club, school or charity of their choice, with a percentage of their shop donated to their chosen organisation.  Branded the “Ritchies Card” the next generation of the Community Benefit program was relaunched in 2021, with updated and improved features such as member-exclusive savings and special offers and the advent of a digital App.

Moira has dedicated her life to helping others, particularly children in developing countries who have existing and often serious health problems.  Who can forget the amazing story of conjoined twins from Bangladesh, Trishna and Krishna in 2009.

In 2001, Kelly's humanitarian work was recognised with several awards, including the Prime Minister's Award for outstanding community service,  and was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia in recognition of her service to both the Australian and international communities.

In 2003, Kelly received the Victorian of the Year award, and in 2003 and 2004, she was nominated for the Australian of the Year awards.

Moira’ s Compassion and positive energy is infectious.

In this episode, host Grant Johnstone talks to the incredible Greg Evans.

Born and bred in Melbourne Greg started his radio career in Regional Victoria.  And over the years worked on air at some of Melbourne biggest radio stations. Including the drive time show on the iconic 1422 3XY in the mid-70s.

His move to TV in the early eighties started with a regular spot on The Mike Walsh Show. But Greg became a household name across Australia hosting over 1400 episodes of Perfect Match. He even hosted the TV Week Logie Awards.

These days Greg works as a Marriage celebrant and is a lifetime Australia Day ambassador.

In this episode, host Grant Johnstone chats to one of the most recognisable voices in radio and television history, the incredible Pete Smith.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Pete left school and joined the ABC the same year television kicked off in Melbourne.

For over 60 years, Pete has graced the airwaves of iconic Melbourne based radio and TV shows including New Faces with Bert Newton,  Graham Kennedy’s "In Melbourne Tonight” On radio in the sixties Pete worked with 3AK as a "Good Guy"... then with Bert Newton on the Greater 3UZ as it was known in the seventies, and in the late nineties he was associated with comedians Tony Martin and Mick Molloy on their national drive-time show.

Pete worked with the D-Generation on radio and followed them to ABC-TV with their well remembered “Late Show” series (remember the Aerosmith send-up “Dude looks like a lady”).

He has also made a guest appearance on the current affairs spoof “Frontline” and performed in cabaret with Tony Martin, Mick Molloy and Judith Lucy.

On Channel 9, Pete was involved with Ernie Sigley and Denise Drysdale on their weekday morning program "Ernie and Denise”. 

And who can forget his booming voice welcoming viewers to the popular quiz program, "Sale of the Century” for over 20 years.

In 2004 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia “for service to the community, particularly through voluntary promotional assistance to charitable organisations”.

In this episode host, Grant Johnstone is joined by Australian musician and media personality Geoff Cox or as he's often referred to as Coxy.

As a drummer, Coxy played with Brian Cadd and with bands Cycle, The Bootleg Family Band and also Avalanche. He also filled in as drummer with the Little River Band while Derek Pellici recovered from burns following a BBQ accident. 

For many years Coxy was the host of Postcards on NINE and the Coxy's Big Break on the Seven Network. Cox has also been an Australia Day Ambassador.

He has supported other charitable causes, including Cabrini Institute and Zoos Victoria. In 2008 Cox survived bowel cancer.

He turned professional playing 6 nights a week in Rock and Roll Bands as well as becoming one of the top session drummers in Australia- playing on 20+ gold albums. Toured New Zealand and Australia with the Bee Gees and Russell Morris.

Toured in America, Canada and Australia with the Little River Band. Toured South Africa with Cliff Richard.  Played in Las Vegas for International artists including Tom Jones, Joe Cocker,Coxy also ran The Roxy, the great Rock and Roll pub in Melbourne. The catchcry “Coxy from the Roxy” in his raspy, Aussie voice on radio ads became legendary.

An incredibly Australian businesswoman, philanthropist and former Vice President of the Western Bulldogs Football Club. Inaugural ambassador for the AFL's national women's competition in 2017. Victorian of the Year in 2018 and was also listed as one of the Australian Financial Review's top 100 women of influence. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1997 for her contribution towards the cause of diabetes research. In 2007 she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in recognition of her long and outstanding contribution to major medical research institutions. In August 2015, Alberti was appointed a Director of the Australia Day Council by then Prime Minister, Tony Abbott. Alberti was awarded Melburnian of the Year in November 2017.| In December 2017, Alberti was presented the Award for Leadership at the Australian Institute of Sport Awards.
