On 14 February 1930 St Josemaria grasped that God wished the calling to Opus Dei to be open to women as well as men. The feast day (transferred this year to 12 February because of Ash Wednesday) is one of thanksgiving and faithfulness to the charism received by countless women and men during a span of over 90 years. How very suitable it is, that having just celebrated the birth of our Lord, we now celebrated the feast of the Holy Family. The meeting of the Holy Family with Simeon and Anna at the Presentation in the Temple added to Mary and Joseph's Joy, for a joy shared is a joy amplified.
But Mary too must have pondered Simeon words especially when he spoke of a sword piercing her heart too. This reminds us how the Holy Family was not exempt from sufferings and trials. So joys and sorrows will be part of the path of holiness for every family.

Christ has come once. On the 25th of next month we will celebrate that first coming in a special way. But Christ is also going to come a second time that we don’t know, and we have to stay awake for it. We have to prepare for that day now. Just like the householder who ensures no burglar will break through the wall of his house during the night, you and I have to strengthen our spiritual defences against an assault at any time from the enemy that would prevent us from welcoming Christ into our hearts.
