Professor Rob Brander, aka ‘Dr Rip’, is a coastal scientist, beach safety researcher and science communicator in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at UNSW. Originally from the cold climes of Canada, he has studied beaches for over 35 years. It was the cold Canadian water temperatures that convinced him to move to Australia in 1993 and do his PhD on rip currents at the University of Sydney. Since then, he has published over 100 book chapters and scientific articles on related topics, and he’s a member of the International Drowning Researchers Alliance and has contributed.Today, Dr Rob leads the UNSW Beach Safety Research Group where he began his popular community beach safety education program ‘The Science of the Surf’ in 2001 and gained the nickname ‘Dr Rip’ for his habit of releasing harmless purple dye into rip currents to educate people about this important hazard. He is a past recipient of an Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Australian Science Research and enjoys bodysurfing very much. Dr Simon Bradshaw has been a writer and campaigner for climate action for over a decade. Formerly the Climate Change Advocacy Lead at Oxfam Australia, Simon’s research and advocacy has taken him all over the world, such as the Torres Strait Islands, Tibet, India, throughout the Pacific, and to many rounds of international climate negotiations. He is passionate about climate justice and the role of climate action in reducing poverty and inequality. Hugo is a surfer, campaigner, and environmentalist.He currently heads up the global marine conservation NGO Oceana in the UK.He previously led the NGO Surfers Against Sewage, campaigning from the beach front to the front benches of Parliament. Hugo founded the Global Wave Conference, Plastic Free Communities movement, the Million Mile Beach Clean & Safer Seas Service and has been instrumental in exposing water company sewage pollution and the plastic pollution crisis.Hugo was awarded a Doctorate of Science by Exeter University for his services to the marine environment; Environmentalist of the Year 2021 by Save the Waves; featured in the ENDS Report 2023 Campaigning Power List, and has been shortlisted as Leader of the Year in the 2023 Purpose Awards.Hugo is on the Board of Directors for the Save the Waves Coalition and writs for Oceanographic Magazine. Dr Rebecca Huntley is one of Australia's foremost researchers on social trends. She holds degrees in law and film studies and a PhD in Gender Studies. She has led research at Essential Media and Vox Populi and was a director at Ipsos Australia. For a number of years, she ran her own research and consultancy firm working closely with climate and environment NGOs, government and business on climate change strategy and communication. She is now Director of Research at the agency 89DegreesEast.She is the author of numerous books including How to Talk About Climate Change in a Way that Makes a Difference (Murdoch books, 2020). Rebecca was a broadcaster with the ABC’s RN and presented The History Listen and Drive on a Friday. She writes regularly for The Monthly, Australian Traveller Magazine, The Guardian and the SMH.She is the Chair of the Advisory Board of Australian Parents for Climate Action. She is a member of the Advisory Group for the Climate Solutions Centre at the Australian Museum and the Sydney Environment Institute. She has held board positions on the board of The Bell Shakespeare Company, The Whitlam Institute and The Dusseldorp Forum. She was an adjunct senior lecturer at the School of Social Sciences at The University of New South Wales. She is a registered Commonwealth marriage celebrant. Dr Wes Morgan is an academic researcher with expertise in international relations, focusing on the Pacific islands and the global politics of climate change. He’s a Senior Researcher at the Climate Council, specializing in the ways countries collaborate at the UN to address climate change and incorporate it into foreign policy and national security strategies. Dr Wes has over a decade of experience living and working in the Pacific islands, including roles as Pacific Policy Advisor with Oxfam and teaching postgraduate courses in diplomacy at the University of the South Pacific. Tim Buckley is the Director of Climate Energy Finance, which is a think tank established in 2022 that works pro bono in the public interest on accelerating decarbonisation in line with the climate science. Tim has 30 years of financial market experience covering the Australian, Asian and global equity markets and is a highly influential energy finance commentator. He has written more than 100 reports on the global energy transition, and the roles of finance and policy in accelerating critical decarbonisation trends. Grace is a PhD candidate from the University of New South Wales, studying in the Centre for Marine Science and Innovation. With a grounding in marine ecology, Grace's research focuses on social ecological systems to help manage marine debris. Much of this work involves engaging with community science to foster environmental stewardship through education and outreach. Grace works with a variety of stakeholders, including government organisations, citizen scientists, not-for-profit organisations and First Nations Rangers. Captain Paul Watson is a Canadian-American conservationist and environmental activist, who founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which is an anti-poaching and direct action group focused on marine conservation activism. He’s received many prestigious accolades in his time, including the Jules Verne Award in 2012 and the Defense of Marine Life Award in 2010. He was inducted into the US Animal Rights Hall of Fame in 2002, he was recognized with the George H. W. Bush Daily Points of Light Award in 1999 and named one of Time Magazine's Top 20 Environmental Heroes in the year 2000. Dr Vanessa Pirotta is a wildlife scientist, woman in STEMM/STEAM, science communicator, author and vessel operator. Vanessa’s research uses innovative technologies for wildlife conservation. Vanessa works collaboratively across both marine and terrestrial environments merging cutting edge tech to access animals in unique ways. Most notable works include drones to collect whale snot and the use of computer algorithms and AI for the detection of illegal wildlife trafficking. Vanessa is a passionate and experienced science communicator who plays an important role in society by making science accessible. She’s represented Australia internationally as the international runner up of the world-renowned science communication competition FameLab, spoken on the TEDx platform, been recognized by the Australian Financial Review as one of the top 100 Women of Influence and listed as one of Science & Technology Australia’s Superstars of STEM. Vanessa is the lead scientist of the scientific and citizen science program Wild Sydney Harbour, which is learning more about marine life in Sydney Harbour, Australia. As part of this, Vanessa is leading scientific research with local First Nations rangers, the Gamay Rangers. Together, they are combining First Nation Knowledge and scientific research to learn more about marine mammals such as whales, dolphins and fur seals. Dr. Scott Bennett leads the scientific advisory panel of the Great Southern Reef project.
Born and raised surfing and diving the reefs of Tasmania, Scott has studied the kelp forest ecosystems of Australia in depth right across the country throughout his career as a marine scientist. Devoted to temperate marine research and the effect of ocean warming on temperate reef species, Dr Bennett was recently awarded the highly prestigious Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher award.
Currently based in Tasmania, his upcoming research aims to enhance the capacity to detect vulnerable areas of the Great Southern Reef.
