Each week, Chris, Ricky, Ro and Tara look back at critically-savaged films and give them the ratings they deserve
From the creators of South Park comes this classic, underrated sports comedy about friendship, loyalty, sportsmanship and of course making fun of your friends. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are down on their luck, but with their invention of a new sport, they manage to become sports heroes. As usual, critics were not kind to this one and it’s up to us to show them why this movie is loved by the people. Join The Recount as break down everything that we love about BASEketBall!
‘Twas a few nights before Christmas and the Recount team was stirring this new episode reviewing a holiday family classic. Kevin McCallister is a household name every December and each year millions watch both Home Alone movies with joy, laughter, and nostalgia. The sequel, however, was met with some critical backlash and as always, we are here to save the movies we love. Recorded before Christmas during a late-night session. We hope you had a wonderful holiday! Let’s keep it going a little longer!
This episode, we are talking 2005’s “The Family Stone” - a witty tearjerker that accurately depicts everything you will deal with this holiday season. It is one of the rare family films that shows what families are about – even the ugly parts. Despite having an all-star cast in Diane Keaton, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker and Rachel McAdams, the film was met with mostly mixed reviews by critics who felt the script was plagued with family-gathering cliches. Join us as we discuss our own awkward family meetings, things that annoy us and of course, a ridiculous round of the movie game.
Have you ever gone to camp as a kid? Ever wonder what going to camp would have been like? Hiking, sports, games, campfires, making new friends! Well, Wet Hot American Summer shows us that camp is nothing like that at all. This cult classic was released to harsh critical reviews and made little money, but has become a beloved wacky hit among fans and has spawned a prequel and a sequel series. Find out what we think as we break down the movie’s characters, wacky moments and…..plot? Also, hear about our own camp experiences in our brand new episode.
The Recount team is back!!! We return with the wacky and strange comedy from the minds of The Lonely Island trio. Hot Rod has become a cult favorite ten years after its release as the strange comedy of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taconne, and Akiva Schaffer has finally caught on with audiences. Find out how we recounted the critic scores of this 2007 comedy and explore the origin of Cool Beans!!
The Holiday season is just around the corner and The Recount gets started early with a classic Christmas tale reimagined by Ron Howard and Jim Carrey. The Grinch is one of the most celebrated Christmas characters ever and got a new version of his story back in the year 2000. However, the critics did not seem to care for this version even though it was popular with moviegoers and remains loved by fans to this day. Join us this week as we are joined by two special guests and close friends to give this classic some special Christmas love!
Rounding out the double feature is everyone’s favorite oldie but goodie, Hocus Pocus! In 1993, this Disney flick was a huge box office flop but has since grown into a bonafide pop culture phenomena - becoming the subject of Halloween costumes, books, musicals, endless merchandise and Buzzfeed listicles year after year. The movie stars Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker as the Sanderson Sisters - 16th-century witches who are resurrected by a virgin in modern day Salem. Join us as we look back on our costumes, learn how to breathe through our noses and make fun of candy corn. Now, play this sucker and meet the old broads
As October comes to a close, The Recount is hosting a Halloween double feature with two all-new episodes around seasonal faves. First up? Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight! Horror fans that came of age in the 90s have fond memories of this 1995 classic that was originally pitched as a stand-alone film but was modified to fit the popular series format. The movie stars William Sadler as Brayker, a stranger who checks into a crumbling hotel while on the run from a suspiciously charming bounty hunter played by Billy Zane. Listen in as we discuss this deliciously campy fright fest featuring the best middle finger salute of all time, courtesy CCH Pounder. Happy Listening!
This week we are talking 1996’s Eraser - a film that is arguably the last “true” Arnold Schwarzenegger action film. Arnold is John Kruger, a U.S. Marshal working for Witness Protection, who has to protect whistleblower Lee (Vanessa L. Williams) from her bosses, shady weapons developers who plan on selling their latest invention — a high-powered, fancy-schmancy rifle — to enemies of the U.S. Considering the critical debacle this film would become, we can only assume that critics of the 90’s were haters and just not ready for CGI alligators, over the top action and classic Arnold one-liners!
If growing up as a kid, you dreamed of locking up your parents and throwing away the key - boy, have we got the movie for you! This week, we discuss the parent-napping comedy “House Arrest” starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Pollack. Released on August 14, 1996, the film went on to gross just over $7 million at the box office and was widely panned by critics. In true Recount fashion, we dispute these critiques and discuss all the reasons why we (and every other 90’s kid) adore this movie.
This week we dive into a movie that has Mariah Carey fans singing in joy. Probably because we are the only podcast to ever review this 2001 release that suffered the wrath of critics. Even if we are not the only ones to try to figure out what made people dislike Mariah Carey’s attempt at movie stardom, we are gonna be the ones who give it a rating score it truly deserves. Find out what we said about “Glitter” and see which one of us is a true Mariah fan in this all-new episode.
The Recount team goes back to 1993 to review this classic skater movie. We all remember Mitchell Goosen and the wonderful skating climax that had everyone wanting to buy some rollerblades. The critics were harsh on this one, but we are the voice of the fans who think this deserves some love. Tara, Ro, Ricky, and Chris talk about Mitchell, the skating boom, and a young Jack Black and Seth Green!
In this weeks episode, the gang tackles the 2007 sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets - marking Nicolas Cage’s return as renowned treasure hunter Ben Gates. Listen in as we digest the assassination of Abe Lincoln, discuss conspiracy theories, battle each other in “the movie game” and of course, provide all new ratings for this fan favorite!
This slasher flick has been a staple in horror and pop culture since its release in 1997. However, the critics were tough on this one and reviews were bad. Join us in our attempt to let the critics know why this movie deserves more respect as we break down the plot and the reason why its relevant to the slasher genre.
Join The Recount hosts as we review and score the 2006 cult hit Grandma’s Boy starring Allen Covert as a 35-year-old video game tester has to move in with his grandma and her two old lady roommates.
Join us in 1994 as we discuss the Damon Wayans superhero comedy Blankman. The film was critically slammed and currently rocks a 13% on Rotten Tomatoes. Today, in 2017, The Recount hosts Chris, Tara, Ro and Ricky give this ridiculous-yet-fun movie the score it deserves.
