Hi, I'm Janet Quinlan and this is Finding Joy in Motherhood - a podcast for Catholic women who are looking for practical tools and words of encouragement to create an orderly, joyful, faith & virtue driven home. I'll help you transform the sometimes "messy days of motherhood" into a journey of growth and fulfillment. I'll share tips to create mindset shifts that change the way you discipline your children, love your husband, and enjoy your day. This podcast is about coaching women to be the best woman God is calling her to be. I'm a former elementary school teacher and homeschooler, a wife of 36 years, mother of 7, and "Grandma Jan" to 14 going on 15!
There are many aspects of Gentle Parenting that I think, as parents, we ought to live. But the problem with Gentle Parenting is that it has been interpreted in our social media culture to be all about our child's feelings and how they're affected.
Emotions run the home - exhausting both child and parent.
Gentle Parenting encourages collaborative thinking - child/parent - while ignoring the fact that a child's "thinking part" of their brain is far from being fully developed.
Children feel safe and happiest when they have a strong structure, strong leadership, and a kind teacher to teach them the virtues of a good, holy, happy human.

Most moms are always trying to figure out what are the best consequences for children who misbehave, don't listen, or have tantrums.
The answer is when you want to change your child's behavior, it is about teaching them rather than punishing them.
Learn the difference between punitive (punishing) consequences and natural consequences which reinforce your teaching.

Low self-esteem in children is often misunderstood. It doesn't always look like a child who says, "I don't like myself."
In fact, children with low self-esteem may appear overly confident, defiant, perfectionistic, or withdrawn.
A child who has low self-esteem doubts his or her value and abilities.
In this episode I identify some common signs of low self-esteem, and give you the tools to help your children grow in self-esteem.
Healthy self-esteem develops by helping our children become capable, responsible, and confident in their daily experiences.

Marriage is a life-long mission. It is a God-given, life-giving mission. When we look at our marriage through that lens, it becomes much different than what the world wants you to believe it is. Marriage isn’t about fulfillingour needs (although our needs are fulfilled when we’re living an authentic friendship with each other). It is about choosing to love.

We are so busy with so many things of the world, our family, and of keeping our heads above water, that I wonder if we spend time thinking about who we are - how we want to be remembered by our husband, children, family, and friends.
In this episode, I talk about how my mom's recent death made me stop and think about how I would like to be remembered.
Take time, today, to commit to the woman, the wife, the mother, the grandmother, and friend that you would like to be.
Everything else in life is of little importance. How do you want to be remembered?

A bright and cheerful, joyful home is not one where everything goes according to plan.
It’s a home where family members learn to adapt, adjust, and respond with generosity when things don't go according to plan.
The more flexibility we cultivate in ourselves and our children, the more peace, resilience, and joy we will experience as a family.

As we begin the month of June, most children are out of school and home for the summer. And, almost immediately, they begin to complain that they're bored.
What do you do with your kids when they're bored? Well, for many parents, they let them play video games or watch TV for most of the day. When we give our children a lot of access to technology, they are missing out on so many ways to grow and mature.
They miss out on how to solve their problem of boredom. They miss out on learning to be creative. They miss out on connections with their siblings and parents.
They miss out on experiencing the joy of simple living and human interaction.
This episode is about how technology can affect your children. Before you let them have a summer with lots of tech time, listen to this episode to understand how it affects your children's brain, mood, and ability to connect with others.

Do you want to be a woman who is a victim of everyone and everything and complains about it to anyone with ears, or do you want to be a strong woman who solves her problems and realizes that sometimes, maybe many times, it’s on us to figure things out - to delegate when possible, to enforce expectations that are reasonable and to let go of unreasonable expectations of perfection in ourselves and in those around us.
Complaining makes you unhappy and it makes everyone around you unhappy.

Having the grandchildren for more than a couple of hours visit, reminded me of how difficult it really is to raise children. Why do humans do this?
Why do we have children that require so much sacrifice?
Why are we shielded from the knowledge of the terrific amount of sacrifice before we have children?
Why? Well, I think it is a seed planted in our hearts from God.
In my experience, the only way to find joy in motherhood is to see it as a higher calling - to be a mom is to have a calling from God.

When we try to control our children's behavior, it usually results in anger, yelling, and probably some guilt. The truth is, we can't control their behavior, but we can teach and lead them to proper behavior.
In this episode, I talk about the five virtues that we need to teach our children so they are happy and cooperative, and so that our home is peaceful and joyful - all of which will contribute to our becoming a happy, calm mom.

When parents are intentional about the way they teach and form their children in good habits and virtues,(another way of saying parent) your family life is peaceful, ordered, and with strong connections of friendship between all family members. Rather than just managing and disciplining the kids which is stressful, you’re mothering them which is profoundly rewarding with long term benefits

In our call to marriage and motherhood, there are many contradictions, disappointments, and frustrations that we experience.
If we look at the difficult part of being a wife and mother through a non-Christian lens, then we move into dissatisfaction, disappointment, and overwhelm with our state of life.
But if we see the contradictions through the lens of our Christian faith - through Jesus' words, "take up your cross and follow me", so much of our life that used to cause frustration and anger, now has meaning and purpose.

This episode is a replay from 2023, but I thought it was especially timely during this season of Lent.
We all judge. Some more than others. Those who judge others, are often victims of judging - their own.
We're very good at judging ourselves - of seeing all the ways in which we fail or don't measure up. We're good at comparing ourselves to other women and quickly seeing where we don't measure up, as opposed to seeing the gifts and talents we have.

As wives, mothers, friends, and women of the world, a lot is asked of us every day! But the most important thing we can do every day is to pray for the men in our lives - our husband and our sons especially - that they will have the faith, hope, and love of St. Joseph. We pray that they will be strong in the face of all the temptations the world has to offer to reject all that is good, beautiful, and True.
We pray that our husbands have the strength, courage, and humility to live God's will for them every day.

So often, we think that we "are just who we are". We don't realize that we can actually decide who we want to be.
We can decide what kind of moms we want to be, what kind of spouse we want to be, and what kind of friend or employee we want to be.
Whatever our stories or beliefs we had from childhood about ourselves, don't have to continue to define who we are now as adults.
Who DO you want to be?

When we fall in love, we put all kinds of energy and anticipation into the relationship. We can’t wait to see him again, and when we do, our heart flutters a bit.
When we become pregnant, maybe especially with our first baby, once we get through the 1st trimester of morning sickness, we are full of excited anticipation to welcome this new little life into our our lives.
We don’t think of the cost of sleepless nights, a crying baby that can’t be consoled, or teaching and reminding our children to contribute to the upkeep of the home with daily chores.
For each of these relationships, we focus on the joy. And then when reality hits, sometimes we fall into doing just the minimum – and just the minimum is lukewarm.
And when we show up in these relationships – with our husband and or our children – doing just the minimum, it quickly descends into apathy.
And apathy is often unspoken but clearly felt by others.

As we begin the season of Lent, let's look at how we live our lives in our marriage and in our motherhood.
Our ordinary life is the perfect vehicle to embrace the goal of Lent, which is conversion.
As wives and mothers, our days are filled with opportunities to convert our heart, mind, and body to God. Do we recognize those opportunities, and do we take up our cross daily to follow Jesus or do we ignore the opportunity to make our everyday holy?

Before the children, before the house, before everything else except God, our husband should be our first priority.
We often focus on the needs of our children which we perceive as always urgent and important, and we sometimes neglect our spouse in the process of fulfilling our children's needs.
When we put our spouse 1st, the order of the family is as it should be and together we build our family life.

The most important thing about your parenting may not be what you’re doing—but who you believe you are while you’re doing it.
In this podcast I talk a lot about the what - what you’re doing in your marriage, how you parent, and how you keep your home.
We’re all very comfortable about talking about the how to do things.
But this quote struck me because at the core of whether we’re successful in what we do is who we believe we are as we’re doing it – our mom self-image.
What is self-image? Self-image refers to the way you see yourself in relation to the world around you.
This episode talks about how important our "mom self-image" is in the way we parent and the satisfaction of our lives.

Today I want to talk about a 2nd way you can find joy in motherhood and that is in embracing a shift in your parenting style that will change the way you feel about parenting.
When I get on a coaching call with almost every client who is a young mom, their biggest question usually comes down to, “What consequence can I give so that they stop this behavior?”
And while I do think there’s a place for consequences – natural consequences that result from undesirable behavior – I think that a better way to parent is see your role as teacher and leader of your children rather than a punisher or simply managing behavior.

You know usually I lead with the practical tips because that’s what people want. Something tangible – a tactic or a tool that will somehow magically change your life.
And while it is true that tactics, tools, routines, and habits can have a profound impact on your life creating peace and eliminating stress in your home, the tool I want to share with you today is deeper and more effective because it is the tool upon which all others will either enrich your life or be abandoned after a few days.
Whether you're a young mom or an older mom, I hope you'll make this "tool" your New Year's Resolution for 2026

Today, I want to talk about something that every parent needs but many of us never take the time to create — a parenting vision.
In my Virtue-Based Parenting Course, I teach you the four pillars of effective parenting: Leadership, Connection, Communication, and Formation in Virtue.
These four pillars hold up the structure of our family life. But before we can build that structure, we need the blueprint — the vision of the kind of family we want to create and the adults we hope our children will become.
Listen in on this episode to learn how to "parent from the future" so that you can have the family life you really want and raise your children to be men and women of virtue, values, and morals who are happy and contribute to society.

Today I want to talk to you about the power of your example. Humans, and especially children, are observational learners. Children learn how to speak to each other, treat others, show affection (or not), forgive (or not) by watching us and by watching how we lead our children. They learn what values and morals to hold by noticing what is and isn’t important to us. They learn how to love God by watching us – not by doing religion from a book everyday.
Children learn far more from watching what we do than from what we say. Your example is your most powerful parenting tool.

Our job, as parents is to encourage growth in our children, rather than limit it because of judgments we have made.
Children are constantly changing.
Their identity isn’t defined by one struggle or weakness.
Struggles are opportunities for growth, and our role is to guide our children in becoming holy, virtuous children and adults – not control their entire journey with judgments and limiting beliefs.

Limiting beliefs are thoughts or assumptions we hold that restrict us or others in our life from growing or living fully.
They also cause us to predetermine how others will act without giving them the space to be different.
They don’t just affect us personally, they also shape how we view our spouse and our children, how we interact with them, and how we generally show up in the world to our extended family and friends.
I think there are 3 main areas where we could have limiting beliefs
· Limiting Beliefs About Ourselves
· Limiting Beliefs About Our Husband
· Limiting Beliefs About Our Children
In this episode we'll talk about the limiting beliefs we have for ourselves and for our husband. Next week, we'll talk about the limiting beliefs we have for our children.

As a former teacher and former homeschooler, I LOVE this time of year! Back to school means new notebooks, new uniforms, new challenges, and new joys. But there are a few very important lessons your children won't learn.
Only you, as a parent, can teach your children how to truly love God, how to have faith, hope, and how to embrace virtues that define your child's character.
Schools teach academics, and some really great schools can support you in teaching faith and values.
But ultimately, you are your children's first teachers in forming their character. It's both a privilege and a responsibility given from God.
Schools and even really great teachers can’t teach your children the most important things in life – that’s not their job – that’s your opportunity.
Don’t give away your most precious gift from God – the privilege and responsibility of forming good, holy Christian men and women.

Many of you know that I was an elementary school teacher. I have taught every grade in public and private schools, and I homeschooled our 7 children.
The schools ask the teachers to prepare a supply list for the parents each year of all the things their children will need in order to learn well.
Crayons, glue sticks, notebooks, pencil box, markers, pencils, Kleenex and many other items.
And while it’s important for your children to have the necessary supplies they need to complete their work, I think there’s another back-to-school list that is actually more important.

What is self-image? How your child sees themselves and how they think others see them – what they think about themselves and what they tell themselves about what and who they are.
A child with a poor self-image will often have low self-esteem. Low self-esteem is when a child lacks confidence about who they are and what they can do. A poor self-image contributes to low self-esteem which contributes to low self-confidence

There’s a basic human need of belonging that everyone possesses.
A family culture gives that "sense of belonging" to each child. It is the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterize your family. It is the foundation of your family.
A family culture doesn’t take away the individuality of people within the family, it simply characterizes what we work to have in common.
Creating a shared vision or family culture bonds the parents and children as well as siblings because they support and challenge each other to live up to the family code of conduct.
They “aren’t the only ones” who can or can’t do something in social settings. Their siblings also follow the set rules of the family and if they don’t, a sibling will usually inform the parents.
If WE don’t give our children a culture to belong to, society or their peer group will.

So, let’s let’s go through some reasons why being a mom is hard. In this episode I talk about the specific areas that many moms find difficult,
So, let’s be truthful about motherhood – it is hard sometimes because it requires constant giving of yourself — physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Everything in life that is good and holy has hard times – sometimes the hard times seem more frequent than the easy times.
But when we focus on WHY we're mothers, it makes it so much easier to accept the hard without letting it defeat us or make us feel angry or overwhelmed.
If we allow it, motherhood transforms us..

The difficult, the monotony, the repetition is the sacrifice of motherhood. But it is ALWAYS in the sacrifice that we end up finding joy – if we’re looking for it.
It’s when we sacrifice for another out of love, that we become a better person. We have a God-given mission as mothers – and as dads for those men listening.
We are in partnership with God in conception and in raising our children. We are our children’s first teachers in everything!
When we see our role in our child’s life as teacher, mentor, model, and as a calling from God it will change the way you parent.

Do you try to control your husband so you'll have a happier marriage? Do you try to control your children's misbehavior with punishments and consequences rather than teaching them how to behave?

Summer can be great and it can be challenging as a parent. Our parenting strengths and weaknesses are on full display! And they're human, like us, so they naturally may not want to listen because they're busy with something else. This episode helps you teach them to listen so you won't have a summer of angry frustration and so your children can really enjoy their time with you! The chimes that I mention can be found HERE.

It’s when a child responds to authority, usually a parent, in a rude, defiant, or disrespectful way.
Now, back talk isn’t always about rebellion.
It often comes from frustration, a need for control, or emotional overwhelm.
And while it’s frustrating, it’s important to understand that it’s developmentally normal.
Kids, especially early teens and teens, are learning to assert themselves.
But just because it’s a normal developmental stage, doesn’t mean it’s okay.
And when we feel disrespected or angry, we often speak disrespectfully to them as we tell them – or yell at them – about how disrespectful they’re being to us.
So, rather than focusing on their action – we need to focus on our action – that comes from what we think our role as parents should be.
We need to be teachers. Our job as parents is to teach our children to speak with respect.

Without a clear destination with anything we do, our chances of a successful outcome is really limited.
It's no different with parenting. As a parent, what’s the destination for your children? What kind of adult do you want your children to become?
When we have a clear idea of the end goal, the day to day has more meaning because we understand that each interaction and behavior either contributes to the end goal or it doesn't.
My course, "Virtue-Based Parenting" is now open for enrollment. I teach you how to create your "adult goal" for your children and how to uncover the actions you'll need to take to help your child reach that goal of a good, faith-filled, virtuous adult.

Self-confidence isn’t arrogance. It’s not pretending to have it all together. It’s not thinking you're better than other people.
In fact, most people who exhibit that brand of self-confidence are actually over-compensating for their lack of confidence.
Real self-confidence is a quiet, steady belief in yourself.
It’s knowing you can handle what life throws at you—even if you’re afraid or if you fail.
Self-confidence is built on trusting yourself, not just your abilities.

Many years ago I heard a quote by St. Josemaria that spoke about how we should love our husband as our first, most precious child.
I couldn’t find the exact quote, but when I heard the message of loving my husband as I would love my first, most precious child it hit me hard.
In my marriage course,"Foundations of a Happy Marriage", I teach you how to love your husband - how to change your thinking about him, yourself, and your relationship, and how to treat him with the tenderness and compassion that with which you love your children.

In today's episode, I talk about why putting your spouse first is one of the best things you can do for your marriage.
Many people prioritize their children, work, friends, or extended family over their spouse, but here’s the truth: a strong marriage is the foundation of a strong family, more personal fulfillment, and a deeper, long-lasting relationship with the the one you said, "I do" to!

It's so easy to find faults in our spouse and blame them for any and all our marriage issues.
But, the truth is, we each have strengths and weaknesses that we bring to the marriage.
Rather than blaming our spouse for our troubles, let's look (bravely) at where we contribute to our marriage issues.
Once we see where we contribute, we can begin to make changes that WILL effect our relationship in a positive way!

We don't need to do extraordinary things in life to have a deep faith and love in Jesus Christ.
We simply need to connect daily in a few different ways.

I was in Chicago last week-end speaking at the Midwest Motherhood Conference - it was amazing!
We laughed and cried and connected with so many friends and made new friends – the atmosphere was electric and I was so honored to speak to all these women.
At this conference we had young women – some pregnant with their first, some pregnant with their 3rd or more.
We had moms of elementary aged children and middle school kids.
We had moms of high schoolers, college-age kids, and moms of children who have left the home.
And one thing we all had in common was that everyone in that room gave up a Saturday morning for I think three reasons. Listen to this episode to hear my thoughts on what moms are looking for.

And in learning how to nurture my interior life, I learned how to find peace – peace when life and relationships were good and peace when chaos was the order of the day. In the Gospel of Matthew we read, "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” I wasn’t going to God – I was carrying all the labor and burden of my life on my own. But once I started developing my interior life, I found peace - and I stopped yelling at the kids and being critical of my husband and those around me.

We need to teach our children to have clear values of what’s really important in life and satisfying their desires all the time is not it.
We need to help our children see that we’re not here in this world to think constantly about what will make us happy and satisfy all our whims.
Let’s teach our kids that things of the world are here to enhance our life, not to make us self-centered, selfish, and always wanting more.
If we want our children to practice moderation as adults, it’s our job to teach them how to live it as children during boring days and celebratory seasons.

The mind finds what it seeks. When we’re focused on all the contradictions or negative parts of our life it is impossible to feel joy. But when we’re focused on all that we’re thankful for, our heart softens, and we can find the joy. Living in gratitude is a habit to embrace. It’s not just one day on Thanksgiving or when special happy events happen in your life.

Through the years, I have coached, interviewed, and reached out to people to ask for their experiences with their daughter-in-law or mother-in-law and, quite frankly, it makes me sad.
The responses I have gotten are 99% negative about their relationship with their in-law.
Why is that? Why are there such issues between two women who love the same man but in different ways?
As I looked at the responses and the complaints of women I coach, I found that there were four critical skills that both women need to develop.

The #1 block for so many women I speak with in attaining joy and fulfillment in their marriage and their motherhood is that they aren’t consistent.

This episode explains why consistency is so important in the care of our families and our home. It offers practical advice for ways to become more consistent.

Many new parenting styles create an imbalance in the child/parent relationship.
When we adopt a parenting style that is child-led and emotion driven, we do a disservice to our children by hyper focusing on how they feel and what they want rather than teaching them how to think and how to feel and express their feelings in an appropriate way while learning the good habits or virtues that are the foundation of thinking, feeling, and acting.
In Virtue Based Parenting, we
Recognize that we are the leaders of our children and that we are their first and most important teachers.
We seek self-growth in virtue in order to better model those virtues for our children and as a point of connection with each child.
We are proactive in establishing our parenting and home life goals and we communicate our expectations clearly and consistently. We react calmly and thoughtfully to our children’s misbehavior seeking ultimately to fulfill our long-term goals rather than simply implementing short-term solutions.
We focus on formation through lived virtues, understanding that virtue, or good habits, is the foundation of excellent moral, spiritual, and practical goals.

I think it’s important to see the cultural shifts that affect our families.
Shifts in what used to be some issues for a few, now are so common place that EVERYONE suffers or deals with them.
Serious issues are now considered normal or easily accepted and have become commonplace in our families.
As soon as we make something common place – something we’ve said or thought so many times that we just think it is true – we’ve lost the control to make the decisions of how we want to live or change and how we want our children to live or our family dynamic to look.
We voluntarily become victims.
I know that some people deal with ADHD, anxiety or other issues and some people’s children do.
But we can’t be in this victim mentality where we feel the need to quickly diagnose and either medicate or get therapy to help.
Ask yourself, what else could this be?

We seem to always want to attack or find fault with people – with ourselves, with our husband, our children, our parents or in-laws.
But if we take the “personal” away from assessing the situation, it’s so much more neutral.
And when a situation is neutralized, we can let go of the flight or flight emotions we have and we can actually find solutions to a problem – rather than just blaming and holding someone at fault.

Self-care has gotten a bad rap, and I think that’s because we’ve blurred the lines of self-care and over-indulgence.
We can’t live in either extreme – putting yourself so last that you’re not even on your list nor putting yourself 1st all the time to please all your whims and desires so that all you think about is yourself.
So, let’s look at self-care from a reasonable, moderate perspective.

Our brain and it’s job to seek pleasure, avoid pain, and conserve energy is what creates the feeling of resistance - the force against the change or thing we need or want to do.
And we need to just identify it that way – notice it, name it, find a way to move through it. Saying to ourselves, "Oh, this is just my brain resisting, but my brain doesn’t always know what’s best for me. I can move through this."

I was thinking about what episode 200 could look like and I decided to keep it simple.
My marriage probably isn’t much different than most of yours. We started off with rose colored marriage glasses and then the struggles came – and we had many. And they were serious and didn’t resolve quickly - probably just like your marriage.
My children aren’t special unicorns. They weren’t always perfectly behaved and unfortunately, neither was I in the way I interacted with them.
But here are some truths I believe about marriage, motherhood, and my calling.

Some experts say that sibling rivalry comes from children competing for their parent’s love. Others say the children's goal is to get their parent’s attention.

This isn’t just about keeping your house clean; it’s about forming the human spirit in virtue. The chores are simply the vehicle for deeper more important lessons and growth-
Why is clearing the table or sweeping the floor so important to child’s well-being? One reason is that children feel competent when they do their chores. They feel capable.
When we see it that way, we can see the importance of the mission.
It is not optional. You will be letting your children down if you don’t teach them these skills.

Why do we feel unfulfilled?
Maybe it’s because we’re not all in - where we are isn’t where God wants us.
Or maybe we’re not all in because where God wants us isn’t where we want to be.
And rather than asking the question, “What does God want of me?” we stay stuck in the feeling of unfulfilled.
We feel unfulfilled because we haven’t embraced God’s plan for us.
We’ve tried to create our own plan.
We don’t need to have a plan – God has the plan for you.

We all complain that we're so busy. And there are a growing number of experts who are in agreement that parents with good intentions are creating a generation of stressed, anxious kids thanks in part to their addiction to busyness and – you guessed it – the stresses and anxieties that come with it.
But what is the real harm of all this 'being busy'? This episode talks about the harm and isolation that is created when we live a life of always being busy.

Many people think that a boundary is a way of controlling someone else. But that’s not really what a boundary does.
We can never control other people’s actions, feelings, or thoughts.
But we can set up requests or boundaries that if not honored there will be consequences on our part.
When we have strong boundaries in place, we honor who we are and how we will be treated.

Love Languages are ways in which we express our love for our spouse and ways we like to receive love from our spouse. But, very often, our love language is not the same. Although the concept of love languages is an excellent tool to grow in a relationship, we have to be careful that we don't use them against our spouse and our relationship.

I think we’re socialized to believe that if we can just “find the right” diet, the best school for our children, the “best” cleaning routine, the perfect date nights with our husband, then all will be well or as good as can be expected.
But the truth of life is that it’s in the little things of each day that we create the life we have.
What is really important to you?

The world tells us the lie that we can achieve happiness and pleasure all the time. And so when we feel uncomfortable or negative emotions, we quickly jump to something that will distract us or push away the negative emotions.
We also do this to our children, teaching them how to cope with negative feelings by using something else to distract them rather than feeling the negative feelings.

Past focused is when we decide that who we've been in our relationships or how we show up in our lives defines us.
Future focused allows us to choose to be who we want to be and we want to show up. We create goals that work towards that future version of our marriage, our motherhood, our home management, and our future self and actually achieve those goals by working towards them.

Our self-image is a powerful thing. If we have a strong sense of self and worth, we show up in the world, with our husband and children with a sense of dignity and clarity. We feel confident and secure that we can create the life we've always wanted.
If we don't have a strong self-image, we show up defeated before we begin.
Have you considered your self-image lately? Who do you want to be?
This episode helps you discover who you want to be and how to make the changes you desire.
Here is the one change you can make that will profoundly affected your marriage and your own happiness.
In "The Way", by St. Josemaria Escriva, point #1 says, "Don't let your life be barren. Be useful. Blaze a trail. Shine forth with the light of your faith and your love your love."
When we hear those words, sometimes we think we have to go do something bigger in the world than be where we are now in the world.
But I want you to suggest to you that what you are doing - your role as a wife and mother - is of profound importance in the world.
Embracing your role in your family can actually change the world.
The world wants to tell you all the things you should be doing to create a happy family. You should enroll your children in the best schools, on the best teams, give them all the latest and greatest technology to use whenever, however, and wherever they want. In this episode, I challenge all that the world is telling you. Those "things" do not create a happy home life and a happy family. Here are four essential elements to create the family and home life you've always desired.
Don't buy into the idea that you can either have happy children or a clean home. Don't believe that in order to take care of your children, you can't take care of yourself. Motherhood is a noble profession that should be lived with dignity, honor, and respect for the human person.
Creating a beautiful space in your home raises the human tone of the home. It nurtures us and our family and gives us a sense of pride and peace. If you need help with creating a home that serves you, come join us in the membership: https://janetquinlan.com/membership
Your child’s self-confidence and/ self-esteem is dependent on how he or she shows up for school every day.
Make sure you're living these three important habits in your home for school success!
This time of year, August/September, the back-to-school months always seemed more like starting a new year than January 1st ever did.
As a child, of course, everything was new with a new grade, new teacher, new clothes and smell of new crayons!
As a mom, I still find this time of year a new beginning.
In this episode, we're talking about taking the opportunity of this beginning to create a new year's resolution - one that will take us more towards the woman we truly want to be and life we enjoy living!
When we give generously, plant the seeds generously with a kind and loving heart, THAT’s when we will experience the joy of God’s grace and we see that our small giving and planting produces a surplus of good in our lives.
Do you know someone who, whenever you’re around them, just make you feel great?
They seem to radiate peace and joy from the inside out.
They aren’t frazzled or overwhelmed.
Or maybe you know families that when you walk into their home there is a certain peace and calm in the home.
The children are happy and content. You don’t feel stressed vibes bouncing off the walls.
Our emotions are contagious, and we have an enormous power and responsibility to regulate them.
When you get stuck – when you rinse and repeat the same day over and over again . When we have the same contradictions in our marriage or with the behavior of our children, the same feelings of overwhelm, sadness, anger, or unfulfilled, It’s like a hamster wheel that we keep running but going nowhere. And we begin to feel as if it will never get better – we’ll always be in this stuck state.
In this episode I talk about ways to get "unstuck" and enjoy your motherhood.
Spoiler Alert! You have what it takes!
Our days are so busy that we sometimes move from one day to the next without really any consideration of who we are, how WE behave (we’re so focused on how the children behave), and what kind of mother we are.
It’s good to stop, think and pray about the woman we are, how we interact with our children, and how we can become a better mom.
If you’re like most mamas, there are probably habits or attitudes that need to be tweaked.
The benefits of reading to your children are more than just a way to quiet them down before bedtime. In fact, if you embrace the habit of reading to your children throughout the day, you’ll find a number of excellent side-effects!
Here are five excellent 'side effects' of reading aloud to your children.
Have you stopped and asked yourself lately how technology is affecting your children or how the tech and kids combo is changing your home life?
What kind of family do you want in 10, 20 years? Create goals and an environment that will nurture that vision.
It’s amazing how quickly we change from nurturing a love with excitement, tenderness, empathy, affection, humor, and passion to “married, now let’s move on with life”. As I grew older, I realized how much a part of me had been dormant in our marriage – maybe out of necessity, because after all life IS busy and children ARE demanding, but I wanted to be his bride again.
Choosing to see his perspective over mine, making the choice to forgive him even when I don’t want to. Putting our husband first before children, family, friends, and activities. Some days, that’s easy. But other days it is an active choice we must make – choosing to let go of our wants, our will, our desires and seeking out what would make our spouse happy – his thoughts and wishes.

This episode takes a look at our mothering habits. Don't listen with thoughts of self-recrimination, but rather be curious about where you can become a better mother so you can enjoy your motherhood more and have well-disciplined children.
These two habits are not the only ones that children need to be happy. However, if you can begin developing these habits when they are toddlers, you’ll be on your way to developing happy, kind, orderly children that will contribute to the peace and joy of the home.

The first and best practical tip I can give you for creating a happy home and a joyful motherhood is to commit to daily prayer.
The spiritual environment of your home is an essential pillar for a bright and cheerful, happy and joy-filled home. Bringing the Catholic faith alive in our homes is what brings peace and joy to all who live there.
There are three very important pillars in creating a bright and cheerful home that nurtures and supports all who live there. Setting up a physical environment, nurturing a spiritual environment, and creating an emotional environment in the home – how we treat each other – all contribute to the vibe that is felt by those who live there, as well as to guests who come into our home.
What does it mean to create a home? We are tempted to aenswer that question by looking on Pinterest for trending decorating ideas or watching TV shows that showcase the newest and coolest things to do with a house. But that’s decorating a house. I’m talking about how to create a home you love.
When we help our children truly process their emotions, we eliminate the indulgent emotions that look like whining, complaining, arguing, tantrums or being easily offended.
Helping our children, especially our teenagers, manage their thoughts about their circumstances, other people, and their own negative thoughts is a game changer in how they learn to approach life.
My Mommy time is over, but my motherhood journey is still ongoing and has added some new dimensions: Mother-in-law and Grandma Jan. And truth be told, I’m still unsure how to navigate this new life.
Here’s what I’ve learned so far...
Lent is a great time to reflect on all the women, our sisters in Christ, who have shown us the heroic example of bringing God's kingdom to the world. As wives and mothers, we are also called to be a part of God's mission.
The ultimate piece of advice I can give to parents is to protect their children’s innocence for as long as possible by protecting your own. Fill your life with the good, the beautiful, and the true and you will model values your children will embrace.
Lent is 40 days of reflection. Reflect on Jesus and His infinite gift of self for us. Reflect on your relationship with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And reflect on how you bring Jesus and His sacrificial love to your marriage and your motherhood.
Learn the five critical components to help your child succeed in school, interpersonal relationships, and growth in self-confidence
Often we want to blame our spouse for our problems, “If only he would….fill in the blank.”
When we spend our time focusing on what he’s not doing or saying, we completely ignore are actions or inactions and whether or not we contribute to our marital problems.
St. Augustine says, “The Peace of all things is the tranquility of order." In this episode I speak about the two different types of order: external and interior order. It's difficult to have one without the order. I help you see how to create interior order which will result in an orderly home and life.
In this episode, I talk about the importance of seeing what stories from the past we have accepted as our current beliefs about ourselves, so that we can decide if that’s WHO we are and who we want to be now.
In this episode, you'll hear two simple reasons why you may not achieve your goals. Whether your goal is about losing weight or sticking to a financial budget, these two issues can stop you in your tracks. Find out what they are so you can find solutions before you give up your goal.
Rather than getting up each day to what was quickly becoming drudgery and monotony, I had a bigger focus – a bigger mission. My family was my business, God had placed me in this role of CEO/COO and with that in mind I went from moment to moment to seeing our family business in the long range planning mode.
As I turned to say my final good-bye to my last child packed off to college, I could barely look at him, much less speak. We hugged a good long time, then I whispered, “Good-bye, I love you. Be good.” I went out to the car, away from his sight and cried that ugly cry. And just like that, the hardest and best time of my life was ending.
The episode is about what motherhood means to me.
It is meant to inspire you to desire more out of your vocation and to see the true gift to self that motherhood is.
I’m not sure when the whole notion of doing everything for your child began, but it has been devastating to the last couple of generations. It used to be that raising self-sufficient children was the goal. Now it seems to be “mean”.
I’m not sure if it was a matter of self-preservation, or just my teacher mode kicking in, but from the beginning our goal in raising the children was to teach them to be self-sufficient.
We aren’t raising children, we’re raising adults.
In this episode I reflect back over the year and remember why I began a podcast and how that's effected my whole year. I want to help women have the marriage and motherhood they have always wanted - not settling for a marriage that began a slow death when the children came and not giving in to discouragement or mediocrity in keeping their home.
I want to give women the mentoring they need to parent from a place of leadership, respect, and appropriate expectations so they actually enjoy their children rather than always being in conflict with them.
All while nurturing faith, hope, and love in a God whom they can depend on and turn to for strength.
Your why in your marriage and motherhood is critical to your success in building the life you want.
Each year we pick up where we left off last year – often never questioning why we’re doing what we’re doing and whether or not we really want to do it.
Guess What?
You don’t have to do anything.
You don’t have to celebrate any of the holidays.
You don’t have to put up Christmas decorations or even a tree.
You don’t have to purchase presents or make the white chocolate peppermint cheesecake because that’s what you’ve always done in the past.
In this episode we talk about identifying what we REALLY want when we celebrate the holidays, and WHY we want it.
If you want healthy teens and adults who make responsible decisions, you need to start forming them through your discipline when they’re toddlers, although it’s never too late to begin. Teaching our children the skill set of virtues becomes their tool box in dealing with life as adults.
I’ve created the Reimagine Motherhood membership because I’m on a mission to help women strengthen their marriage, discipline their children with love and confidence, and create a peaceful, orderly home.
We’ll do that by teaching practical tools to achieve the goals you want and through group coaching to achieve the mindset you MUST have to achieve any goal.
Every goal or dream in our life requires the inner conviction of wanting. Nothing just happens. Whatever our goal is, we have to want it enough to change when we need to change and do what we need to do – and change is uncomfortable.
But we can’t challenge ourselves or rise to our best selves without discomfort.
We all have received messages throughout our lives, whether subtly or blatantly, that have contributed to the presence of our inner critic.
You know who she is - that voice inside your head that tells you you're not a good mom or your too fat or any other number of false messages.
It's time to recognize that the beliefs we may have in our head aren't always true - and we need to stop believing them and silence that inner critic that holds us back from being our best selves.
When we teach our children to become independent, we’re teaching them so much more than just the skills of taking care of themselves.
We’re nurturing their self-esteem because children who can do for themselves, believe and trust themselves will develop confidence in who they are and satisfaction with their true self and their own self-worth.
When motherhood is hard, it's important to remember your "Why". Knowing why we do what we do and keeping our long term goals in sight helps us to be consistent and focused rather than giving in to the difficulties of the day.
What happens when you create goals, but the obstacles seem insurmountable in achieving them?
What do you do when you’ve carefully crafted a goal and the steps to achieve it in a certain time frame, yet you find the circumstances of your life are completely out of your control – you can’t control the outcome in trying to achieve the goal?
You'll hear about the importance of faith and flexibility in achieving your goals.
Here’s what your husband really needs – and it’s not a pretty collection of photos on the wall or the perfect meal or even the best vacation. What he really needs is critical to him showing up to be the husband YOU need and the father he wants to be.
The critical advice I can give on the mother-in-law/daughter in law relationship is don’t assume that because you think it, it is true.
Find out what the "secret" is to live a life empowered - creating the life you long for.
Showing up in all areas of your life and keeping your word to yourself and to those around you is the first step in actually becoming the woman you want to be.
I wanted to pass along some ways in which you could help your husband be a great father. The first few tips are from me, then I asked my husband, Michael, what he found helpful in becoming a great father. Enjoy!
What thoughts do you have that create joy and what thoughts do you have that create anxiety, stress, or discontent?
Do you approach your life with confidence or have you decided that you’ll never be enough or you’re stuck or a victim?
Learning the skills of marriage, motherhood, and keeping a home are important, but whatever you think, will be your reality.
Choose your thoughts to serve you rather than enslave you.
Stop believing the past defines you and know that you have the power to define yourself now.
You just need to slow down, be conscious of your thoughts and choose what serves you.
Make sure to listen to the previous Episode 83 "What Your Daughter Needs" to give you the basics of what all your children need. This episode is for the boy moms!
On our wedding day, many of us came to our marriage with expectations – our book of instructions for our husband about the kind of husband he is supposed to be -what he is supposed to think, do, and say: The Husband Manual.
Uncover and choose the thoughts that will empower you with positive feelings so that you can work towards creating the motherhood you have always dreamed of with confidence rather than with feelings of defeat.
Did you know that your feelings come directly from your thoughts?
They don’t come from what someone else did or didn’t do to you.
They don’t come from what your parents said to you many years ago.
They come from what you think about the actions or words of another.
If you want to enjoy positive, happy feelings create thoughts that bring those feelings.
Don’t let yourself be a victim of the world and its arbitrary expectations. Resist the temptation to judge yourself according to other people’s standards and fall victim to mom guilt.
Ask God to help you do your best, love your best, and live His will for you the best you can. He loves you, your husband, and your children more than you do. He will give you all that you need to love them, care for them, and find your generous spirit in your motherhood.
Sibling Arguments don't have to result in full blown hate speak and physical violence. People who live together will always disagree from time to time. As parents, our job is to teach our children how to disagree with respect for their sibling.
St Josemaria says that you can tell a great deal about the state of one’s soul by looking in her closet.
Whether we’re talking about our relationship with our spouse, the way we parent, or the how we keep our home, in order to be effective we need to attend to 3 tools in our lives.
During this time of Lent, I often think about Jesus’ mother, Mary. I think about the conflicting thoughts and feelings she must have had about His life.
Sometimes, it’s hard to identify with the suffering of Jesus because it is just so much. But surely as women we can identify with empathy and compassion, the suffering of His mother.
Give an emotional boost to your children and to you and commit to reading together every day.
Our gifts are super powers. When we use them for the good the potential for change is unlimited.
The spirit of detachment doesn’t mean that we don’t care about our life or the people in it, it simply means that we don’t depend on the exteriors of our life for our happiness.
We try to do EVERYTHING everyday and often that leaves us with getting nothing done because we’ve given into the feeling of overwhelm, and procrastinated the day away.
Decide the night before what the one thing is that you must do the next day to feel like a success.
This episode talks about modesty in the home, in our speech, and in our dress. Modesty is the gatekeeper of future moral decisions.
What is your attitude about your circumstances? What are your thoughts about the way you will show up today?
You have the power to have the life you want.
It is the last human freedom – to choose your attitude about your circumstances.
We can raise beautiful children with firm yet kind words – helping them to develop virtue without feeling oppressed by our negative thoughts.
Do you struggle with not being enough?
Do you think you're not kind enough, smart enough, or good enough?
Somewhere along the way someone or maybe many people felt free to tell us we were not enough.
And we believed them.
Nurture your marriage like a good gardener would nurture and tend the flowers.
Don’t miss out on how great it feels to be married for 35, 50, or more years.
But it will only last that long if you each make your marriage your first priority and treat each other well.
Our job, as parents, is to give our children the appropriate guardrails and tools so they CAN make the best decisions to learn to listen to us.
More than seeing how Jesus heals and responds to those in need, His suffering speaks to me.
We make decisions every day about how we’re going to spend our time, yet so many of us feel overwhelmed.
We’re overwhelmed because we’re not using our time wisely and there’s a nudge in our conscience that tells us so.
ALL my adult kids know how to keep a home – and whenever we visit it’s clean so that’s a win!

Being friends with your children isn’t a one-way street. It isn’t just about getting them to open up to you and be their confidant– although that’s important – it is about allowing them to help you grow in virtue and often that’s through your own self-reflection on how you can develop more virtue in the relationship with your son or daughter.
It would be a disorder for children to correct their parents or tell them what they’re doing wrong. But in the parent/adult child friendship, a son or daughter can point out ways you can grow as a person.
Do you ever talk to yourself?
Not like the you’re losing your mind and you think someone else is there talking to yourself.
But really engaging with yourself and what you think and say about yourself.
Self-talk is actually something we’ve done, unconsciously for most of our lives.
And for most of us, the “unconscious” part is where the trouble can brew.
Imagine working for a boss who never said, “Great job”? Maybe you’ve worked for a boss like that. They figure you’re supposed to do a great job so you don’t deserve nor need a compliment.
Is that the kind of mom we want to be? Should Our children or our husband or even our friends just supposed to be a certain way or act a certain way that we neglect thanking them or complimenting them?
We all have limiting beliefs about one thing or another.
We put limits on ourselves – the circumstances don’t put limits on us.
We decide what we think about our circumstances and make the decision to act or not act and confirm the limiting belief.

Like fine wine, great marriages take a long time to mature. You will have some bumps and some boulders in the road. Breathe. Step back and remember why you wanted to marry in the first place.
What is happiness? From the wisdom of Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang, happiness is a warm puppy, or a warm blanket. Happiness is having a friend, or 3 friends in a sandbox with no fighting. Happiness is family
How do you define happiness in your motherhood?
Is it having a little or a lot more money than you need to pay the bills?
Will you find happiness after you lose 20 lbs?
Is it 2.5 children or 10 children?
Is it a day without picking up someone else’s dishes?
Or maybe it’s a hot bubble bath at the end of the day
Webster’s Dictionary – happiness is defined as a state of contentment and joy
When we’re in the thick of things - eyeball deep in motherhood - we can easily lose our perspective and question whether it’s worth it.
Is my day to day challenge of parenting - of teaching them how to be virtuous, responsible, happy adults failing?
Is anything getting through or am I just wasting my time, my energy, and my breadth?
Be encouraged! What you’re doing in your parenting is getting through to them!
Before we buy into schedules, routines, and habits to keep order, we have to consider WHY we want and need order.
Order in the home creates a home that is bright, cheerful and full of joy – lifting the tone rather than a heavy wet blanket destroying the joy.
Have you ever considered that God has chosen you for a specific mission?
Often we think of specific missions from God as religious call or a big splash in the world.
But God is calling each one of us in the circumstances of our daily lives to go and bear fruit.
If we don’t see our own children as precious and gifts from God, then we contribute to a culture that believes children are expendable.
Here are some thoughts on why we decided to homeschool, and the benefits of creating a learning environment - whether your children are home or in a traditional school.
It is a process. To Love AS Jesus loved, to forgive AS Jesus forgives, to identified with Christ a little more each day.
Our main job, as mothers, is to get our children to heaven.
We fulfill this important mission by introducing our children to their best friend, Jesus. We nurture a friendship between Jesus and our children by instilling a deepening love for Him through many aspects in our day and in the mindset with which we approach Jesus.
Like a soldier ready for the battlefield -and what mom doesn’t sometimes feel like life is a battlefield – when I get up promptly I am ready for the day in so many ways!
No matter how hard we try to control things, we obviously can’t.
So how do we live our lives without worrying?
Your exterior life is a direct reflection of your interior life. Want to be free of stress and overwhelm? Listen to this quick reflection for the answer!
Why can some people make the decision to lose 100 lbs – and they do it, while many others struggle year after year?
Why can some people make the decision to run a ½ marathon and actually do it?
Why do some people have homes that you can walk in anytime day or night and it will be clean, uncluttered, and cheerful while others would be mortified if you dropped in?
Why do some people have children who are respectful, well-behaved, and disciplined in mind, body, and spirit while others have children who are uncontrollable and unhappy?
Who succeeds in attaining goals and conquering habits? Those who have the right mindset for success.
True generosity is a gift of self. People feel it. People appreciate it. We become a better version of ourselves when we’re cultivating a generous spirit within. By increasing our own generosity, we'll naturally model it for our children. Is there anything sweeter than watching your child be generous to another?
In this episode, I’d like to convince you that the flood of negative/overwhelming emotions about Christmas does not have to define the season.

Gratitude is a choice and a habit – choose to see the gifts in your life, rather than the disappointments. See the positive aspects of your children and husband, rather than focusing on the disappointments.
When we are conscious of the gifts in those around us, the disappointments don’t take on the gravity that they do when we aren’t living gratitude.
What is a family culture and do you have one? In this episode we'll discuss the importance of creating a family culture that gives your children a sense of true belonging and a framework of values, goals, and expectations. If we don't define the end goals of creating a family, then we can fall victim to just bumping along. Create a dynamic, happy, joy-filled family by identifying your family culture!
