The Des Moines area will see a smokey haze. The National Weather Service says the haze will be widespread after 2PM.
IowaWORKS is having a Career Fair at Central Library. The DSM Library says the event will be on Thursday, September 7 from 11:30 AM-1:30 PM.
Slow Down Coffee in Des Moines is brewing coffee for early risers. The Des Moines shop in Highland Park says it will officially be open at 6:30 AM Tuesdays through Fridays. The shop is closed on Mondays.
Waukee Parks and Recreation has posted its Fall & Winter Program Guide. The city says people of all ages can begin registering for classes, events, leagues and more Thursday. Click here for the guide.

The largest Fair since before the pandemic. More than 1.1 million people have attended this year’s Iowa State Fair. Making 2023 the second largest fair in its 169 years. The Des Moines Register says 1,133,938 enjoyed the state’s largest event. That’s over 15,000 fairgoers from 2022. 2019 still holds the record of most fairgoers at 1,170,375.

The Excessive Heat Warning continues across the state. The National Weather Service says the Des Moines area could feel temps over 100 degrees Wednesday and possibly Thursday. We should return to the mid 80s by Saturday.
In light of the heat, DART is giving free rides to all official cooling centers in Des Moines.

The 2023 Best Fair Food is the Deep-Fried Bacon Brisket Mac-n-Cheese at Grilled Cheese! You’ll find it by the big slide. I was at the fair yesterday and this is what some folks had to say about the sandwich.
I mostly love to eat food like the Deep-fried Bacon brisket Mac-n-Cheese, and the Iowa Twinkie. Then I just roam around checking out the big slide, people watch on the Grand Concourse, or at the beer tent, walk by the butter cow and Caitlin Clark. Oh, since I grew my own pumpkin patch, I needed to check out the giant pumpkins.

RAGBRAI begins this weekend in Sioux City. Bicyclers will be riding through Des Moines Wednesday for Des Moines-Apoloza.
The following businesses will be closed as riders pass through Ankeny due to limited or no access because of the RAGBRAI route:

- Albaugh Family Senior Community Center
- Public Services Building - Deliveries may be made to City Hall. Please call the department directly or do business online.
Des Moines traffic closures thanks to RAGBRAI
Fleur Cinema & Cafe is reopening! The theater says it’s partnering with Fridley Theatres to open this October.
- “The Fleur Cinema & Café will reopen in time for the fall Oscar season, when it will showcase various Academy Award contenders. It will continue to provide the highest quality pictures, exceptional service, and unmatched experience that has made it a staple in the Des Moines area for nearly two decades.”

Technicians in Waukee are conducting a natural gas leak detection survey in parts of the city. This city says the annual process is part of the City's maintenance plan and helps ensure the gas system is in accordance with federal, state and customer guidelines. Work is daily through July 28.

Walnut Street will be closed between 5th Street and 6th Avenue for a while in downtown Des Moines. Demolition has begun on the 38-year-old Kaleidoscope building. KCCI News says crews are tearing down the east half of the shuttered mall to make way for a $100 million housing skyscraper. The project will take several years and final plans to fund the project will come before the city council later this summer.

Air Quality Advisory For The State Of Iowa Through Wednesday. The National Weather Service says The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has issued an Air Quality Advisory for Iowa. The worst air quality is expected in about the eastern third of the state, where fine particulates will be at concentrations the EPA considers unhealthy. Learn More.
Kids south of downtown Des Moines have a new play area at MacRae Park. The city has renovated many parts of the park at the corner of Thomas Beck Road and SW 9th Street. Kids can enjoy a new water play area and the new Larry E. Moore Nature Playscape. Watch my video tour on instagram. There is a ribbon cutting ceremony for completion of phase 3 of the park at noon today.
DSM is reminding people not to light up on Independence Day. The city says Des Moines Parks and Recreation reported damage from consumer fireworks at 22 of our 77 city parks. Des Moines Police will ticket people lighting fireworks and it will cost $625. Watch the video from the city.

The DSM Arts Festival is all weekend. Three days of celebrating the arts in downtown Des Moines.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Heritage Carousel at Union Park in DSM, a key attraction for adults and children alike! The nonprofit behind the carousel marks the anniversary with free rides and a party 4-8pm and will include 25 hours of totally free rides with the carousel open from 11am to 7pm. On Sunday, the carousel will have a big party from 4pm to 8pm with activities, Mexican food and a magician at 6:15pm.
Interrobang Film Festival - “The Interrobang Film Festival, presented by Des Moines Arts Festival, is a three-day IMDb-verified Festival. It is a juried show, including public showings and talkbacks with Directors. Filmmaker submissions are accepted in nine categories and are juried by a panel of peers. This year, the Festival is pleased to be screening over 40 films from nine countries. Interrobang Film Fest is held at the east end of the Des Moines Arts Festival inside the (air-conditioned) Des Moines Central Library.”

Cajun Fest is this weekend at Cowles Commons in Downtown Des Moines.
Brook Run Park on the northeast side of DSM has a brand new playground for the kids. The city says it includes a We-Go-Round, Chill Spinner, Bucket Seat, and 3 new ground panels with puzzles. There is also new safety surfacing and ADA compliant sidewalk connection to Village Run Drive! See pictures.
Backstage Volunteers are needed at the DSM PlayHouse.
The Animal Rescue League is having a virtual Auction June 17th. The proceeds will benefit pets at the ARL.
The DMPL Summer Checkout Challenge has begun.

The Summer Biergarten in Des Moines has returned for year two. Starting today every Wednesday to Sunday May-October, you can head east of the Lauridsen Amphitheater in Water Works Park. This year you can enjoy food, beverages, live music, and games.
The new Olive Garden in south DSM on SE 14th Street is having a soft opening this weekend. It opens to the public Monday May 22nd.
The Neal Smith Trail is closed from 6th Ave. to Birdland Marina. DSM Parks and Rec says the closure is due to elevated river levels. The trail will reopen when water levels decrease.
Gray’s Lake Park & Meredith Tail will be closed for some renovations. The City says the closure is from 7:00 am - 3:00 pm on Tuesday, May 23rd as 𝗙𝗢𝗚 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗟 is applied to the trail surfaces. Learn More. DSM Parks and Rec needs trail volunteers.
DART has a new route in Des Moines starting this June. The city says If you live in north DSM, the bus transit service is introducing weekday service on DART On Demand River Bend. It is a mini service that allows riders to take on-demand trips around the River Bend, Oakridge, King Irving, Mondamin Presidential and Chautauqua Park neighborhoods.
Beetlejuice the Broadway Show is coming to DSM this October. You can get tickets now.

Interviewee - Guardian's Head of Corporate Social Responsibility Francine Chew
- Topic: Drake Relays first-ever collegiate wheelchair national championship
- Notes: The collegiate wheelchair national championship, as part of the Adaptive Student Athlete Program (ASAP). The multi-year grant from Guardian to the University of Michigan Adaptive Sports and Fitness (ASF) program for the creation of ASAP will significantly expand access to competitive opportunities in para track and field, wheelchair tennis, and wheelchair basketball for collegiate student athletes with disabilities, starting with the 2023 Drake Relays.
- Question topics: I'll ask about the Relays, the team's hopes, what being at the Drake Relays means for these athletes, plans for the future, and what this means for future athletes.

Brooke Mullins has become the first Drake University Bulldogs women's athlete to claim a champions flag since 1995. The Drake Relays Facebook page says it's also a school record in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:13.94. Watch the video.

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie has made a statement about the passing of local philanthropist John Pappajohn.
Post on Facebook: "The City of Des Moines lost a great friend, generous benefactor and beloved member of our community in the passing of John Pappajohn. The tremendous contribution to Des Moines of the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park is one of our most frequented parks, enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year. But the legacy that John and Mary, who died last year, goes well beyond their beautiful sculpture park. Their mutual love for Des Moines and Iowa can be seen in dozens of contributions and gifts they bestowed on communities, hospitals and universities throughout our state. - You can definitely get your steps in with how many streets are filled with vendors in the DSM Historic Court District.
- I see our downtown farmers market is rated #2 in the nation by at least 2 organizations. (Shape Magazine and the Daily Meal)
- I am always marching around looking for new food to try, and new items to buy that I haven’t seen before.
- The entertainment is fun too. There must be two to three musical performers playing at a time throughout the Market each Saturday.
- I loved seeing the specific booth for smaller, local vendors wanting to dip their toes at the Famer’s Market…
- A fun experience is the Opening Ceremony with the bell.

Opening Day for the Downtown Farmer’s Market in Des Moines is Saturday May 6th. The Market says this year it will accept SNAP EBT cards and participate in the Double Up Food Bucks program. The program is a nutrition incentive that matches up to $10 of SNAP EBT Card benefits spent at farmers’ markets.

You may hear sirens on Saturday at noon. Westcom Regional Dispatch Center will be conducting an extra test of outdoor warning sirens for Clive, Norwalk, Urbandale, Waukee, West Des Moines, and Windsor Heights.
This evening is the beginning of First Fridays in the East Village. Shops, restaurants, and bars will showcase an array of events throughout the East Village. The event is from 5-8PM on the first Friday of the month through August 4th.

Altoona’s Spring Clean-Up begins Monday, April 10th.
Ankeny is inviting residents to its Earth Day stream and watershed cleanup Saturday, April 22 from 8-11 a.m. The city says it will also be giving away free trees at its Annual Tree Giveaway happening at the same time. Free tree saplings will include: Black Oak, River Birch, Shagbark Hickory, and Eastern White Pine.
The tennis/pickleball courts at Crown Point Community Center in Johnston will soon be under renovation. The Parks Department says it removed the nets and fence Thursday, and demolition will begin on Monday, April 10.

People in the Des Moines Metro will have a new option for lunch. The Halal Guys is opening its fast food chain in Des Moines. The New York based restaurant serves platters of chicken and gyro over rice, and falafel sandwiches. The Des Moines Register reports the chain will also open in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.
Des Moines Parks and Rec has a job opening for a Park Planner. The city is looking for candidates with experience in landscape architecture or engineering. It says candidates can also be AICP certified. Apply Here.
Cinnaholic is opening a second bakery in the Des Moines Metro. People in Ankeny will be able to get the vegan style, name your toppings, cinnamon rolls. Opening day is scheduled for August 9th. Cinnaholic also plans to open a third branch by 2025.
The World’s Largest Dinosaur exhibit at the Science Center of Iowa is closing soon. Students and parents have until April 16th to see it in DSM.

Spaghetti Works Restaurant downtown is officially closed.
Head to Triumph Park in Waukee for Trout Day. Bring the family for fishing and food Saturday. The city says the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will stock the pond with trout, and a few special fish will have a tag to redeem for great prizes!
Ankney is hosting a Youth Leadership Symposium for Students, grades 8-12 at Otter Creek Golf Course. The city says the symposium is a free event Saturday to help Ankeny's youth develop important leadership skills.

DSM News:
Des Moines residents have one more week until the deadline to purchase a 2023 City of Des Moines dog or cat license without incurring a $50 late fee. The city says completed applications postmarked by March 31 will avoid the late fee.
Johnston Police will be at Hy-Vee on Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to 4pm for items to be donated to the Johnston Partnership. The PD says while you are grocery shopping, pick up a few items or an entire bag full and give them to the officers as you exit the store.
The Waukee city council has approved plans for the new Stratford Crossing Park. It also approved site plans for the parking lot improvements at Vince Meyer Learning center. Learn more.

Good luck Hawkeye women’s basketball team heading to Seattle in the Sweet 16. Their third appearance in four years. The Hawkeyes are two wins away from the final four. KCCI News reports the Hawks are in the top seat of its bracket. They will either play Duke or Colorado on Friday.
DSM City Jobs Fair at the East Side DSM Public Library this Tuesday
Now is the time to register for the 2023 Des Moines Mayor's Annual Ride (MAR) on April 22. The city says the bike ride is 19 miles long and will start at Principal Park traveling from Gray's Lake to Easter Lake prior to ending back at the stadium. The funds raised will go to funding Fix-It Stations and other projects along DSM trails.
Now is the time to sign up for Adult slow pitch softball leagues in Des Moines. Season begins in May.

The Johnston City Council has approved the construction contract and bond for the construction of the Crown Point tennis and pickleball courts.
The Grimes City Council has approved professional services agreements with an architect and a construction manager for the new fire station. The city says designs and construction documents for the new fire station will be developed for the next 8 to 9 months. Construction is anticipated to start in 2024 and be complete in 2025.
5 Borough Bagels new Urbandale location is set to open in ten days.
Since 2012, the USS Iowa has been permanently berthed in San Pedro, California as the Battleship USS Iowa Museum. Iowans who visit the ship and show a valid Iowa driver's license can board the ship free of charge.

The Polk County Conservation Board has proposed building a parking lot for Lauridsen Skate park in downtown Des Moines. The board is proposing that a southern portion of the Riverwalk dog park would be taken to accomplish this. The proposal also says the northern portion of the park would be expanded in return. Checkout Mayalou Coffee! A new Coffee Shop is on the Southside on Fluer
A Winter weather advisory is in effect from noon today through 9:00 AM Thursday morning. The National Weather Service reports some rain will spread northward across much of southern and central Iowa by this afternoon, becoming all snow across northern Iowa. NWS says we’ll have slippery road conditions. We might get 2-5 inches of snow.
Pleasant Hill is declaring an Emergency Parking Ban for Snow Removal on all streets within the city. The parking ban is in effect starting at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday until 5:00 p.m. Thursday, January 19th.

A man in West Des Moines is arrested for trafficking his girlfriend. KCCI reports 22-year-old Jacob Michael Kerr had rented a hotel room for about a month. Police say he allowed his girlfriend to have sex with multiple men for money.

Des Moines Macrae Park pond construction.
Construction crews in Altoona will be working around 1st Avenue. The city says these are utility companies working on relocations, preparing for the next phase of 1st Avenue reconstruction in the spring. No road closures to report at this time.
The City of Ankeny has permitted a record amount of new investment valued at over $528 million in commercial and residential construction. This is the fourth consecutive year that Ankeny permitted more than $400 million in construction projects.

A new coffee shop with an L.A. vibe has opened recently near downtown Des Moines. Northern Vessel has delicious coffee (I recommend the Spanish Latte. RIP Kevin Conroy (Batman).
So many interesting things to see in Iowa. Like The Great Pyramids of Avery, a little over an hour's drive southeast of Des Moines. Iowa PBS says the pyramids were built in Hickory Grove Cemetery. They were built by Axel Peterson in 1939.

Gray's Lake Park hours will be changing starting tomorrow. November through March, the park is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Von Maur closes tonight at 7 a Valley West Mall for good. Then opens at Jordan Creek Town Center on November 5th. The Des Moines Register says Von Maur’s Jessica Stoltz says opening day at Jordan Creek will have a DJ, gifts with purchases throughout the store, chances to register to win a $500 gift card or a gift basket, entertainment for children and a gumball machine dispensing chances to win a gift card.
