Meet Dusty – a goofy, cuddly, and deeply loving orange cat. He’s 3 years old and a Domestic Short Hair. Dusty is a very healthy, playful, sweet boy who can get overwhelmed or anxious sometimes. He does best with structure, a calm environment, and someone who knows how to read and respect cat body language. He’s very affectionate, genuinely hilarious, and full of personality. Dusty is also litter box trained and very clean.
He lives for treats of any flavor and enjoys catnip. He loves to chase bugs and toys, and will knock over anything you leave nearby like a little goblin when he wants attention. Dusty also likes cozy chin scratches. His favorite way to bond is through play, but once he’s all tuckered out, he’ll melt into you for hours of cuddles.
Dusty is not just sweet – he’s sensitive. After his person had some major life changes he went from a five person two cat house to a one bedroom apartment for nearly a year, and spent a lot of time isolated and bored. Ever since, he struggles with unpredictable aggression, especially when startled or overstimulated. It doesn’t happen constantly, but it’s real, and it’s part of why we’re looking for a particular kind of home that understands what he’s been through, and what he still needs.

Featured Animal: Beau
Beau is a sweet Labrador Retriever Hound with a goofy streak and a deep love for plushies. He’s 3 years old with a gorgeous red-brown coat and the softest ears in the world. We don’t quite know his backstory, but he’s clearly been trained and shown plenty of love. His favorite activities include chasing a scent, playing fetch and staring lovingly into the eyes of every human he meets. He’s potty trained, listens well, and genuinely wants to please. He knows “sit”, “leave it”, and he always comes when he’s called. He trusts humans and listens to a firm “No”. While your shoes and socks might be tempting at first, he will quickly adapt to the rules of your house. Squirrels, rabbits, and anything that scampers? Beau’s instincts kick in fast. A secure yard and/or leash walks are a must. Beau is strong and sturdy, so he might accidentally knock over a small child or an unsuspecting adult during a zoomie session. His ideal home is a loving, dog and cat free household with people who appreciate plushie hoarding, goofy antics, and a tail that could probably write poetry if it had a pen. Beau is ready to be a loyal, gentle companion in his next era of life.
Featured Topic: Keeping Pets Warm and Safe
As the winter season approaches, it’s important to keep our pets warm. Cats and dogs should be kept indoors for the majority of the time because they can get hypothermia and frostbite. Make sure the home is pet-proof and they have plenty of stimulation. Dogs should take shorter walks, wear a dry sweater or coat, and dog boots if they will tolerate it. Be sure to wipe their paws, legs, and belly clean from snow and chemicals that they could have picked up on the sidewalk. If you have a pet you can’t bring inside, make sure they have a warm and dry place to sleep in. NeighborhoodCats.org has a guide on making winter shelters at home. Some recommended materials are storage bins, styrofoam boxes, or cardboard in a pinch. For cats, the box must be on the smaller side so they can use their body heat to make it warmer. Insulate the sides with foam and the bottom with straw. Avoid using blankets because they draw out heat and will freeze when wet, and avoid hay because it can harbor bacteria or mold. Keep the shelter close to where they eat. Whether you have a cat that stays inside or a dog that loves walks, it’s vital to keep them warm and safe during the winter season.

Featured Animal: Levon
Levon is a 6-year-old grey tabby cat currently available for adoption through the city of Bloomington Animal Shelter. He was brought in from the street and spent over 2 months curled up and hissing in the back of his cage. Since coming into foster care in January, Levon has blossomed into a sweet, playful, and loving companion. He still has so much potential to grow, but already, he’s showing his true colors. He’s lively without being destructive, and affectionate without being clingy. Every night, Levon quietly tucks himself into his favorite cozy spot and sleeps peacefully until morning. When you greet him to start the day, get ready — his favorite thing in the world is cuddles! He purrs so hard that he drools from happiness. Levon loves calm, gentle company, so he needs a quiet home without other pets or children. Loud noises and sudden movements scare him, but if you earn his trust he will choose to be by your side. Whether it’s sitting near you on the couch, lying at your feet while you work, or even joining you for a yoga session (he’s an aspiring yogi and absolutely loves the mat)! While he isn’t a lap cat just yet, he’s getting closer every day. He’s also very clean, eats well, both wet and dry food, and can’t resist a little treat. Shaking a treat bag is a great way to call him when you need him. He understands “no” and is respectful of the home. Levon may not have had the easiest start, but he is making up for lost time with every little step forward. In the right home — quiet, safe, and full of love — Levon will be the most loyal, joyful companion you could ever wish for.

Many people love to show affection to cats, but might not always understand their body language. It’s usually easy to tell when cats are happy, with purring, slow blinking, head rubbing, and an upright tail being the main indicators. They might lean into your hands and meow for more pets. However, cats can easily get overstimulated with petting so it’s good to watch for the signs. When boundaries are pushed, they will let you know with hissing, lowered ears, swiping paws, or swishing tails. Before this you may also notice skin twitching, ruffled fur, and dilated pupils. While some of these signs can also indicate excitement and wanting to play, it’s important to use context clues and get to know the individual cat. Try to observe the little reactions they have to stimulation in the environment, like during play, meal times, sleeping, cuddling, and when they hear loud noises or are otherwise disturbed. Take notes if you want to, and maybe you can explain it to friends, family members, and children with the capacity to understand, how they can better connect with your cat. It’s important to teach children that all animals have boundaries just like they do, and must use their body language to communicate. Having an understanding of animal body language is a great foundation for creating strong bonds.

Babes is a cat with gray and white fur, and he’s a little over 3 years in age. He loves being petted and will reward you with many tiny meows and purrs as he sleeps alongside you. He has spent at least part of his life as a stray, but he’s ready to leave those days behind him! He is eager to meet his future family and claim a spot for himself on the couch. In foster, he has been known to be a great companion and even take a ride on a walker! Babes is FIV+, so it is recommended that he live in a home with only other FIV+ cats, or a home where he can be the only cat.

Are you and your dog looking for a new best friend? Then the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter may introduce you to Erik – a real dog’s dog and a good buddy to his humans, too.
This 40-pound guy might have a mysterious charm when you first meet, but give him a minute or two and he’ll be your loyal best friend for life. Erik strikes the balance between chill companion and active adventure buddy.
It cannot be stressed enough that Erik adores other dogs and would love to find a forever home with a four-legged buddy that wants to play tug and wrestle. And if your dog is not into playing, Erik would be OK with that, too. He is used to playing it cool with his grumpy foster sister-dog and is just happy to be in her company.
Erik is already house-trained and crate-trained, so he’ll fit seamlessly into any living situation. He’s got his routines down pat: sleeps soundly in his crate at night, then heads straight outside first thing in the morning like the responsible guy he is.
Erik is highly trainable, takes treats politely, and takes gentle corrections like a champ. He’s got that playful side too – loves playing in the hose and showing off his natural athleticism. He absolutely loves walks, hikes, and runs – perfect for anyone wanting a workout buddy or study break companion. Plus, he’s a total foodie who will never judge your snack choices.
Erik is great for active individuals or families with older kids. Erik’s ready to leave his mysterious past behind for a bright future filled with adventures, unconditional love, and all the belly rubs a good boy deserves.

Ma is a 5-year-old cat, currently available for adoption through the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter. Although this sweet lady loves to lounge about in the large cat colony at the shelter, she is currently located at Btown Meow Cat Cafe. She has befriended several shy cats and likes to cuddle with them. When she hears visitors, she likes to see who is around! Her previous owner reports that she ate salmon food and liked to flush the toilet. The finer things in life, right?

Calling all young readers! The City of Bloomington Animal Shelter has a program called Book Buddies: a fun and rewarding way for children to practice their reading skills while spending time with shelter animals. Whether it’s a cat, dog, or rabbit, the animals love the sound of a good story. This program is best suited for kids in kindergarten through 6th grade, but readers of all ages and levels are welcome. Please note an adult must stay with their young reader during the session. To join: simply stop by the shelter during business hours, check in at the front desk, grab a name tag, and find a cozy spot with a furry friend. Most Book Buddies read for about 20-30 minutes, but are welcome to stay longer.

He’s spent his time at the shelter recovering from some serious injuries, but he has been a real trooper the entire time. Ace figured, since he’s feeling a lot better, it’s about time to settle down with a family and move on from this tough time in his life.”

Shelter staff describe Bev as laidback, independent, and perfectly content doing her own thing. She is not one for wild play sessions or constant attention. Though she enjoys her alone time, Bev has her sweet moments. She always greets you when you come home. Bev does fine around other animals, but she plays very lightly. She’ll bat around a toy mouse now and then, but doesn’t seek out the company of other cats. She’s more of a chill, independent companion who will be happy to share a quiet home with you. Featured Animal: Tiffany
Tiffany is a cat with gray patterned fur, and she’s about one year old. She came to the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter in pretty terrible condition. She had a serious uterine infection called pyometra and an eye in desperate need of removal.
One emergency surgery later, and this little gal was on the road to recovery. Tiffany’s remaining eye appears healthy, however she does have limited vision out of it. She is currently living in a foster home where she is slowly learning to navigate with her impaired vision.

Featured Animal: Castle
Castle is a cat with short brown fur, just about 3.5 years in age. She is terrific, FIV-positive gal who is currently in a foster home.
Her foster momma has the following to say about her:
“Castle starts off pretty shy, but curiosity gets the better of her and she can’t help but poke her head around. She is a great conversationalist: she loves to be talked to and will meow right on back. Castle is the queen of head-butting you with her very petite head and large body – she cannot get enough pets! Her favorite pastime is to loaf in a sunny spot and not-so-subtly pass judgement on her surroundings. She is tidy and very relaxed for the majority of the day, with a few pounces and zooms around the apartment when she feels like it. She is not the biggest fan of being picked up, but will tolerate it with just a few glares. Overall she is a great little buddy and just wants to get attention and give head-butts.”

Featured Topic: Events for Local Animal Shelters
Free Feline Friday is scheduled for Friday, March 7th from noon to 5pm at the City of Bloomington Animal Care and Control building, which is located at 3410 South Walnut Street in Bloomington.
On Sunday, March 9th from 10am to noon, adoptable dogs can be found at the Pet Expo. This is scheduled to take place at Switchyard Park, located at 1601 South Rogers Street in Bloomington.
Bone Appetit is scheduled for Saturday, April 12th at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds Expo Hall, located at 11265 US Highway 50 West in Bedford. There will be dinner, entertainment by Daniel Schaffer, silent and live auctions, and a cash bar. White River Humane Society successes will be shared along with a status update and plans for the new shelter.
A Rabies Vaccine Clinic is scheduled to take place on April 27th from 1pm to 4pm in the Brown County Music Center Parking Lot. Rabies and microchipping services will be available, limited to the first 500 Brown County pets (specifically cat or dogs) that show up that day. All dogs must be leashed and all cats must be in carriers.
Brown County Humane Society’s Dawg Gone Walk & Fiesta is scheduled for Sunday, May 18th from Noon to 2:30pm at Deer Run Park, located at 1001 Deer Run Lane in Nashville. Registration opens March 1st. There will be games, contests, pampering stations, information booths, and shopping. Funds raised for the event go directly to the feeding and care of pets at the shelter.

Stella seemingly gets overlooked time and time again, as she has been waiting for about 10 months for her forever home. She has many wonderful qualities. She loves to explore, go on hikes, play with dog friends, and then snuggle up under the blankets for some quality time. Stella is very house trained and loves her people deeply. She may not do well with confident female dogs, but she loves a chill, silly dog. Stella is ready to enrich the lives of a forever family.

Skitter Skat and Dobby are a young, bonded pair of cats that have been in foster care. Now, they are ready to find their forever home!
Skitter Skat will want to be around you and follow you, but will not want to be touched or picked up. Dobby loves to be picked up and pet. They are both fantastic with other cats of all ages and sizes, and both will engage in playing with toys with you. According to shelter staff, Garbanzo is “an excellent orange guy whose main interests in life are eating and maintaining his glorious smooth coat. Pets are so much more than just cute faces and funny moments. Studies show that having a pet can boost both our mental and physical well-being in ways we might not even realize.
Let’s start with physical health. Research has found that pet owners tend to get more exercise and spend more time outdoors, especially if they have dogs. Daily walks with a dog keep us moving and also offer moments to connect with nature. Being outside and getting fresh air can make a world of difference, whether it’s a five-minute stroll or a longer adventure. Another surprising benefit? Pets can actually help lower our stress levels. Studies show that just petting an animal can reduce stress by releasing oxytocin—a feel good hormone. Not only does this calm us, but it also helps our pets feel relaxed and loved too. It’s a two-way street of comfort and care.

Daisy and Darla are 7-year-old Beagles who came to the shelter as best friends. The two are “joined at the hip” and would love to be adopted together. Beastman is a kitten with orange and white fur, currently available for adoption through the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter!
He is over halfway done with a five-week ringworm treatment protocol. The risks of transmitting ringworm at this stage are relatively low to adults, provided they follow through with the remainder of the ringworm protocol at home. However, older pets and people, very young pets or people, and immunocompromised individuals would be more susceptible to contracting ringworm. This is why animals with ringworm, or suspected ringworm, are isolated from the rest of the shelter population. Shelter animals are stressed, and this depresses their immune system.
Beastman craves snuggles and love, but shelter staff unfortunately cannot give him the attention he needs in isolation. If you take him home to finish his antifungal and topical treatments, shelter staff assures that you will not regret it!

On this week’s episode of Lil BUB’s Lil Show, we’re featuring three animals that are currently available for adoption through the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter: Chrissy, Princess Honey, and Frank!
Chrissy is a domestic shorthair kitten, about 5 months old, with a beautiful combination of tabby and tortoise shell-patterned fur. She came to the shelter very shy and frightened, but has blossomed into a confident and friendly girl. Chrissy gets along great with all cats and really enjoys their company. She is not the kind of kitten to annoy an older cat, but does like to snuggle with them. Chrissy has also been around dogs and seems to do just fine with them. If you are looking for someone who isn’t as rambunctious as some really young kittens can be, this girl is for you.
Next is Princess Honey, a domestic shorthair cat with white and brown fur, about 5 and a half years old. Sometimes, she is a grumpy lady, but she definitely likes the company of others. She tolerates dogs and other cats, and occasionally joins in on the fun of play from a distance. Princess Honey has a bubble around her that she will break when she is in the mood. When this happens, she will take the time to cuddle on a lap or sit behind you on a couch. Her couch move is her best, because she really does like to be a part of the group, just on her terms. Having a family that just lets her be her might be her biggest dream, and she will love your family forever.
Third, we have Frank, a Bully Breed Mix dog about 5 years in age. Frank “The Tank” is sweet and social with every human and dog he’s met. He is housetrained and already knows several training cues. Frank enjoys fluffy toys, giving kisses, and food puzzles (especially those with peanut butter). He joyfully wiggles his booty whenever he sees a friend. If you’re seeking an affectionate companion, Frank is confident he’d be a great match.

On this week’s episode of Lil BUB’s Lil Show, we’re featuring three animals that are currently available for adoption through the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter: Constance, Frankie, and Mya!
Constance is a Husky between 6-7 years old. This sweet and silly girl would love to be adopted into a home with another dog. She is fairly shy on her own and may take a little time to warm up, so a canine pal could help her do that! Constance is currently living it up in a foster home with a canine foster brother and some kitty foster siblings. She loves being outdoors and going for walks, but also has a great time snuggling up and begging for pets when it’s time to settle down. She is super easy to get along with!
Frankie is a domestic shorthair kitten with orange and white fur. Frankie’s Foster states: “Sometimes kittens need a little extra time to fully appreciate the involvement of people in their life. It took Frankie some time, but he now fully loves people. He begins purring immediately upon being picked up. He loves his little neck rubbed. Frankie really likes to chase things, especially feathers on a string. Frankie has done really well with adult cats, and doesn’t seem to hassle them, like so many kittens can. He has been very patient waiting for the right family to come along, but he is ready.”
Mya is a sweet, loving little cat with gray and tan fur, between 6-7 years old. She is easy going and likes to stay snuggled up in her bed and lounge around. The shelter is just a little bit too loud and busy for her taste, so if you see her hiding, don’t be fooled! She is a sweetheart and once she settles into her new home you’ll have a perfect new friend. She enjoys the company of mature cats like her. She found younger, energetic pets too stressful to live with, but has happily cohabitated with older cats in the past.

Featured animal: Elf
Elf is a domestic short hair calico kitten, about 14 weeks old. Everyone’s first reaction when they meet Elf is to pity her semi-functional leg situation, but she takes offense to that! Although she uses her fourth leg differently than the rest of her legs, it doesn’t slow her down in the slightest. She’s the fastest of her litter and speeds around corners using that 4th leg for drifting. She can get a little freaked out when being picked up or held, because she doesn’t feel as stable as her siblings, but otherwise her leg is a non-issue! She has lived in a foster home with many other cats (of varying ages and tolerances for young kittens) and with large, loud dogs. Elf would make a great companion in a household that has older children who can be sensitive to how she needs handled, and with dogs/cats that will respect her boundaries since it’s a bit harder for her to get away from stimulus.

Lemmy is a 7-month-old Bully Breed Mix puppy, with beautiful brindle coloring and soft fur. He has a very joyful personality and loves life, every person, and every dog. Although Lemmy is still a puppy and has some puppy goofiness, he also has an “old man” side. He is pretty calm and likes to play, but when he is done playing, he will plop down in some of the most uncomfortable-looking positions to nap. Lemmy loves to go for walks and does not pull. He knows some basic commands and loves to perform, especially for food. House training is still a work-in-progress, but he is making terrific progress. Lemmy is currently living with several cats and has been very good with them. Lemmy is a sweet boy who you will not regret taking a chance on. He will brighten your days and bring a smile to your face.

Ziona is a dignified older lady who knows about the finer things in life, like cozy beds and sampling all the snacks. She is an American Staffordshire Terrier Mix, a little over 7 years old. Ziona met an older puppy and thought he was fine, but wasn’t all that interested in engaging with all that wiggly energy. Tally and Musa are a pair of sweethearts that met each other while in a foster home.
Tally, whose tail had been recently amputated, was recovering in a calm and quiet home when the very scared and timid Musa came to join him. The two were an instant match and have been inseparable ever since! Tally is a social boy that loves to talk with his people. He is super into food and head scratches, and he very proudly holds the title of “professional napper.”
Musa, on the other hand, prefers to let Tally get all the attention. She is a curious girl that is still a bit skittish with people, but she has been making a tremendous effort to be more social in her foster home. For Musa, this looks like her not hiding away at every chance she gets.
Tally and Musa love to cuddle and play together, and they almost always spend their time near one another. They are a wonderful and adorable duo that would love to find their forever home! Musa is part of the Bloomington Animal Shelter’s Catitude adoption program, and staff are happy to talk you through supporting a kitty like Musa.

Maze is a sweet little kitten who is front and center in the cat kennels of the Bloomington Animal Shelter, with black fur and a little white patch on her chest.
Maze will proudly show off her big meow when she hears visitors coming to make sure everyone pays attention to her! She is SUPER playful too! She seems to be good with humans of all ages and has lived with other cats, but would need to live with other FeLV positive cats since Maze has tested positive for FeLV, or feline leukemia virus. Shelter staff would be happy to go over what this means with interested adopters!

Lulu is an amazing Domestic Short Hair cat, just over 10 years old, who has been spending some time in foster care. Her foster momma has the following to say about her:
“This sweet girl just began her weight loss journey and she needs your help! Lulu is a very sweet and easy going older lady with a very kissable grumpy face. She doesn’t much like being held or picked up, but that’s necessary sometimes to help her on or off things- in which case she’ll make a little murmur of annoyance. While she’s a huge fan of pets and scratches, and doesn’t shy away from telling you when she wants more by reaching a paw out to you, she isn’t a huge cuddler. But she does enjoy being brushed and grooms herself along with you helping her. She’s more mobile than she looks and can, with some difficulty, go up and down stairs and even jump on low couches. She benefits from having soft blankets nearby to lay on or use as a landing pad for her joints – and having a personal cheer team motivating her to be more mobile. Lulu isn’t a huge fan of the outdoors, but enjoys window gazing or just sitting in the doorway or on the porch for a few minutes. She doesn’t seem to like loud road noises. One of her favorite pastimes is watching bird, chipmunk, and squirrel videos on YouTube, and will sit right in front of the TV to watch. Lulu would benefit from a home that can give her the time needed to help her lose weight and become her best self! At the same time, she will love to relax with you and will make herself your new best friend. Lulu is an absolute unit of love and will attach herself to your heartstrings and make your life that much better!”

Featured Animal: Brynn
This week’s featured animal is Brynn, an American Staffordshire Terrier Mix dog who has been with the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter for well over 200 days. While she is hoping that her forever family is on the way, she does still chat animatedly with staff and volunteers once she’s out of her kennel! She loves to snuggle, but also has an independent personality where she is content to do her own thing. In the summer, she enjoys the shelter’s play yard pool and splashing around after lounging in the sun. Brynn is dog-selective, but has previously lived with another dog.
Since Brynn has allergies and will need ongoing care, the BUB Fund is offering a $1,000 grant to her future adopter to help with ongoing medical costs. Those interested in Brynn can learn more from and reach out to the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter.

For the 50th episode of Lil BUB’s Lil Show, we dive into two topics pertinent to our local animal community: the fate of Indiana’s bobcats and the future of companion animal welfare in our state.
Senate Bill 241: Taking bobcats
A bill stirring debate is advancing through the Indiana General Assembly. Senate Bill 241, spearheaded by Sen. Scott Baldwin, aims to establish a bobcat hunting season by July 1, 2025. Despite a strong 40-9 Senate approval and an 11-1 vote in the House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources, the bill has faced objection. Bobcats play a crucial role in our environment, helping to maintain balanced ecosystems. Critics of SB 241 question whether Indiana’s bobcats, once listed as endangered until 2005, have truly bounced back enough to be hunted.
House Bill 1412: Canine standard of care
The Indiana General Assembly has passed House Bill 1412, which has sparked a heated debate on the future of companion animal welfare in Indiana. The bill will force cities and counties in the state to allow pet stores to sell puppies from puppy mills. It states that stores must be allowed to source from hundreds of federally-licensed commercial breeders. Thus, the bill would void 21 local ordinances across the state that stop the sale of commercially-raised puppies in pet stores. Critics, including local officials and animal welfare advocates, are strongly opposed to this bill because it would protect and promote the puppy-mill-to-pet-store pipeline. With Indiana lacking significant investment in statewide spay-neuter programs to control and improve overall pet health, the bill’s approach has raised eyebrows.
Opponents of these bills can contact Governor Holcomb’s Office at 317-232-4567 to ask him to veto SB 241 and HB 1412.

Featured Animal: Peanut
This week’s featured animal is Peanut, a very sweet cat currently residing with the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter!
Peanut enjoys watching birds through the window, sleeping under blanket forts on couches, and playing with paper straws under doorways. She isn’t really a lap-cat, but she is social and generally wants to be around people to see what they’re doing. Peanut gets a little too excited around other cats, so she would probably be better off in a single-cat home. She has not been around children or dogs. Peanut likes freeze-dried chicken and drinking from faucets or cups, but also does fine with cat water fountains. She also enjoys chasing things, especially if they’re flying, such as frisbees.
Overall, Peanut would love a quiet home where she can be the only cat and watch animals outside, chase toys, and take naps. If that sounds like your home, Peanut would love to meet you!

Featured Animal: Leo
This week’s featured animal is Leo, a 4-year-old Australian Cattle Dog with a feisty personality. Leo loves the outdoors, along with activities such as hiking, swimming, visiting the dog park, and playing with other dogs. His natural instinct is to herd, so his current guardians believe his ideal forever home would be with someone who has experience with cattle dogs.
Leo would do best in a home with other dogs and no children. He is curious about cats, but his current guardians are not sure how he would do around them. Leo has some anxiety and takes a while to warm up to strangers, but his current guardians describe him as “a good boy”.

Featured Topic: City of Bloomington Dog Parks
The city of Bloomington oversees two dog parks: Ferguson and Switchyard. The goal with these dog parks is to foster safe areas where dogs are socialized to have good manners.
Ferguson Dog Park is located at 4300 N. Stone Mill Road, on the north side of Bloomington near Lower Cascades Park and Griffy Lake. Switchyard Park is located on the city’s south side, along the B-Line Trail, and the dog park is located in the southern area of Switchyard. Both parks feature two fenced areas: one for use by large dogs and one for small dogs.
Being considerate of others helps make the dog parks enjoyable, healthy, and educational places for dogs and their owners.
At Ferguson and Switchyard, dogs are required to be spayed or neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, and at least four months of age. The parks are unsupervised, and dog owners are responsible for the behavior and cleanup of their own dogs. Other types of animals are prohibited in the dog parks.

Gizmo is a sweet and rambunctious young cat with boundless energy. According to his current guardian, he loves people and would do very well in a home with room to run. We’ve featured Cierra before, but she still needs our help! Cierra is a very cuddly and goofy dog, about 4 years old. Although she spends most of her time in a foster home, she’s been waiting for her forever home for over a year. She loves her people, snoozing in the sun, and relaxing on couches. She is an expert at catching a bouncing tennis ball and taking treats gently. Cierra knows just what to do when she hears “outside” and always goes potty in the yard. She does not do well with other animals and can be nervous of new people, especially men. Featured animal: Mountain Girl
Mountain Girl, formerly named Trixie Joe, is a young Great Dane/Anatolian Shepherd mix, currently residing with the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter. She has been very sweet with all of the shelter staff and quickly became a staff favorite. She can be nervous of loud noises and quick movements. She unfortunately experienced harsh training methods and interactions prior to coming to the shelter, but would do great with someone who understands sensitive dogs that may not have much confidence. She will definitely need a person whom she can look to for guidance. Mountain Girl has a lot of love to give, and with patience and love, there is confidence that she will flourish.

Featured animals: Rosemary and Thyme
Rosemary and Thyme are a cute pair of bonded kittens who came from a feral mom, but have gotten used to being around people at the Bloomington Animal Shelter. They’re both still shy and tend to hide with a lot of socialization. They would do well in a home that gives them time to warm up. During the day, they like to act like comfy kittens and curl up and sleep. With patience and time, they can relax, it’ll just take the right adopters who are willing to give these under-socialized kittens the chance that they deserve.

WildCare is a nonprofit organization that provides professional care to sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife so that they may be returned to the wild. They provide care and rehabilitation services to all native Indiana wildlife species, with the exception of deer, and also strive to help protect the next generation of wildlife through education and community outreach programs. WildCare provides treatment for about 1500-2000 animals per year, and they have taken in thousands of animals since 2001. They also do approximately 75 educational outreach programs, reaching up to 3,000 people every year. WildCare holds permits through the Indiana DNR, USDA, and US Fish and Wildlife Service. They do not receive any state or federal funding and rely only on donor support to save the lives of injured and orphaned wild animals. WildCare has very limited staff and mostly relies on volunteers who generously donate their time.

Mia is a beautiful, sweet lady who is all about affection. She loves to cuddle up and start her purr box on high. As soon as anyone stops by her kennel, she is up and seeking lots of pets. Mia is FeLV positive and should either be the only cat or live with other FeLV cats.

FeLV is an infectious disease among cats. According to the Cornell Feline Health Center, FeLV is the most common cause of cancer in cats. Spider is a shy guy that may greet strangers with a hiss and a hide, but as soon as he gets a pet, he melts like butter. His foster mom says that he sought out affection after only a day with her. Spider is FIV positive, meaning he has Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. Spider could easily live happily with other FIV positive cats.

According to the Cornell Feline Health Center, FIV is one of the most common infectious diseases of cats. FIV attacks the immune system, leaving a cat vulnerable to many other secondary infections. There is no cure for FIV, but cats with FIV commonly live average life spans.
FIV is primarily transmitted through bite wounds from an infected cat. Casual, non-aggressive contact is not considered a major transmission risk. Rarely, an infected mother cat may transmit the infection to her kittens. Un-neutered male cats with outdoor access, especially those who are likely to fight with other cats, are at the greatest risk for FIV infection.
Although FIV is similar to HIV and causes a disease similar to AIDS in humans, it is a very species-specific virus that only infects felines. FIV is not linked to disease in humans.
To diagnose FIV, blood samples are examined for the presence of these antibodies, which can be drawn in a veterinarian’s office. There is currently no vaccine commercially available in North America to protect against FIV. The best way to reduce risk is to limit contact with cats who may be infected with the disease by keeping cats indoors and testing all cats within the household.
For a healthy cat diagnosed with FIV, the management goals are to reduce their risk of acquiring secondary infections and prevent the spread of FIV to other cats. Spaying and neutering eliminate the risk of spreading FIV to kittens or through mating. Uncooked food, such as raw meat and eggs or unpasteurized dairy products should be avoided to minimize the risk of food-borne infections. Wellness visits for FIV positive cats should be scheduled at least every six months. Because most illness in FIV positive cats result from secondary infections, it is very important that cats be promptly evaluated and treated when any signs of illness occur.

On this week’s episode, we’re doing something a little bit different: featuring two special needs pets who need our help.
Our first featured pet is Star, a sweet senior dog who comes to us from Humane Indiana. She initially arrived at Humane Indiana after she was found abandoned at a farm. Star was adopted quickly, but then returned to the shelter when her adoptive family’s situation changed. Star is friendly and eager to greet visitors at the shelter. She also does well with children of all ages, but it has been really hard to find the right family for Star because she’s a senior gal with some medical concerns. She’s been at Humane Indiana for nearly a year, despite her amazing personality. After a few visits with her vet, it was suspected that Star has chronic myelopathy. She struggles with incontinence and takes ongoing medication to help with her conditions. When meeting Star, you might notice her back legs don’t function normally. But, she still loves to run around, play with toys, and will take any treat you offer her. She has also done well with other dogs and dog play groups during her shelter stay. This sweet, playful girl needs to get out of the shelter so she can be spoiled like she deserves. Our next featured pet comes to us from our local City of Bloomington Animal Shelter. Babs is a 6-month-old Heeler mix puppy. She was born in the shelter then raised in a foster home with her nine siblings. At around 6 weeks of age, Babs and two of her siblings began developing significant medical concerns over the course of a month. They had ulcers in their mouths, growths that would rupture on their bodies, fevers, random lameness of different limbs, and significant pain in various parts of their bodies. The affected puppies all remained much smaller than their litter mates. Babs and her siblings saw numerous vets who performed biopsies, checks, and blood panels in an attempt to figure out what was causing their symptoms. The three puppies were started on prednisone, which helped to keep symptoms mild, but they were still battling significant issues. In late December 2022, Babs’s two siblings passed away. Babs is the sole remaining pup of the three and we are hopeful about receiving a diagnosis for her soon. She’s about 25 pounds, half the size of her healthy siblings. She is very smart with a zesty personality. It is suspected that she may have an autoimmune disease. She is scheduled with a specialist who can help determine this and help with her ongoing care. Babs is in a loving foster home, which will likely become her forever home. She is truly beating the odds with proper care. Featured Animals: Emmi and Tobi at the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter!
Emmi and Tobi are a senior pair of bonded cats who have lived together for 10 years. They can often be found cuddled up together, relaxing in their colony room. They are very affectionate, not only with each other, but also with their human friends. Emmi loves to rub up against your legs, and Toby loves to lounge purring loudly while “making biscuits”. Emmi and Toby get along great with other animals, and will blend right in with a new family. Emmi and Toby have been at the animal shelter for a very long time and are looking for a retirement home together.

Thanks to better medical care and awareness on the part of pet owners, it’s not unusual for pets to live much longer than ever before. It may be difficult to believe that a pet has reached old age, but most cats and dogs are considered “senior pets” by the time they’re around 10 years old. Although older pets may develop age-related problems, good care allows them to be happy, healthy, and active. Senior pets generally need more frequent visits to the vet, possible changes in diet, and in some cases, alterations to their home environment. Featured Pet: Bonnie at the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter!
Bonnie is a bully breed mix dog, just over 7 years old. Once warmed up, Bonnie is a “snuggle bug” who enjoys giving and getting affection. Bonnie is a chill in the house, where she settles right in and enjoys a nap. When the leash comes out, she gets excited and does a whiny dance, as she adores going for walks. Bonnie has gotten along well with another dog and has no apparent resource guarding concerns, nor is she dog-reactive. Bonnie is reliably house trained and sleeps quietly through the night on her dog bed. How she is with cats or children is unknown, but shelter staff suspect a household with adults and older children would be fitting.

In this episode, we cover one of nature’s most important land stewards: the beaver.
Beavers can be found in a number of freshwater habitats, such as rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds. When they create dams and lodges, they impound water, which serves as shelter for other animals. Their infrastructure creates wetlands used by many other species, and because of their effect on other organisms in the ecosystem, they are considered a keystone species.
Beavers create water channels to forage through their environment. The backup water they create then spreads across the surrounding landscape, creating complex side channels that support fish habitats. This “bathtub” water also seeps into the ground, allowing underground aquifers to be refilled. Through their daily activities, beavers alter the landscape and create habitats for many other species like fish, aquatic animals and birds, making them an important piece of our natural ecosystem.
The complexes that beavers make can also act as water filters, trapping sediment and filtering out toxins to improve downstream water quality. They also help to slow spring runoff, which buffers the impact of flooding and drought in many places.
Another important thing beavers help with is climate change. As climate change leads to increased frequency and strength of wildfires, the work of beavers has significant beneficial impacts. Beaver meadows can function as firebreaks, and shield plants and animals from high intensity burning. And beaver dams have been shown to reduce the power of runoff and filter out sediment that fills rivers and streams after a wildfire.
Beavers are a crucial piece of land stewardship in many places, including right here in south central Indiana. Our very own Sycamore Land Trust has several beaver dams in Monroe County. Beavers transformed the land they inhabit, as well as bring new life into the areas they live. Sycamore Land Trust has two cameras that watch two different beaver lodges. You can see some of their wildlife footage which includes not only beavers, but bobcats and many other native Indiana animals and birds on their website. Kitty Kitty Meow Meow is an 8-year-old orange tabby cat, currently staying at the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter. She is incredibly sweet and loves to be pet. For dogs and cats, preventative medication can provide defense against fleas and ticks year-round.

This week’s featured animal is a little different. Sycamore Land Trust’s nature preserves are home to many native Indiana plants and animals, including the bobcat.
Bobcats are a medium sized wild cat native to North America. Bobcats are largely solitary and rarely seen, due to their ability to blend in with their surroundings and move silently. Bobcat vocalizations are rarely heard by humans. But, in southern Indiana, Sycamore Land Trust is monitoring bobcats living on our nature preserves, using motion triggered wildlife cameras installed along game trails. These cameras have captured multiple bobcat families traveling and hunting together, and even recorded a bobcat mother calling to her kittens to catch up. Land conservation is a critical piece of animal welfare. Often protecting the habitats of many wildlife species, protected green spaces with accessible trails provide places for people to connect with their animals, unplug, and be in nature. In southern Indiana, Sycamore Land Trust has been protecting land, restoring habitat, and connecting people to nature since 1990. Sycamore Land Trust owns and cares for more than 10,500 acres on over 125 protected properties and maintains trails on 13 preserves for free public use. They have accessible nature preserves – some right in the middle of neighborhoods – and they’re a resource to discover new habitats.

Featured Pet: Ceirra, at City of Bloomington Animal Shelter!
Shelter staff describe Ceirra, a Bully Breed Mix dog, as a “petite potato full of love and snuggles”. She is happiest when she has a lap to curl up on while she gets her back scratched. She seems to be house trained and goes potty right away when it’s her turn to visit the yard. She should probably be a “solo pet” at this time. Ciara is patiently awaiting her forever home and is available for adoption from the Bloomington Animal Shelter.

Featured Pet: Elsa at Morgan County Humane Society!
Elsa is a Boxer mix, with an estimated age of about 1.5 years. She came to Morgan County Humane Society as a stray, but she knows some basic commands such as “sit”, “shake”, and “lay down”, so it is presumed that she had an owner in the past. While she enjoys being challenged and entertained, such as by figuring out puzzles, she loves to just sit and snuggle. She is a “lap dog” and looking for a home where she can be the only animal.
