"In Burma. Independent media are more than journalists. They are front line defenders of democracy. They are its active force, its lifeline every single day. They risk their lives to report the truth while others remain silent or worse, stand with tyranny. Soldiers risk their lives on the battlefield, but at least they have the means to defend themselves and fight back. Journalists only have their words, courage, and intellect. For me, independent media have been a lifeline since my childhood. The junta hides every detail about my mother's well-being and what is really happening in Burma. But through outlets like Irrawaddy, DVB and Myanmar now, I've been able to know the truth. Without them, I would be in the dark, just like so many families across Burma and the world, in Burma and other countries. State controlled media is used to feed the public lies and brainwash people. When I have been in Burma and before with memoir growing up in different countries, learning about different cultures, I learnt not only about Burmese traditions, but also about the spirit behind them. One of the most beautiful traditions is offering merit doing a good deeds on birthdays or special occasions. So today, on my birthday, I want to honour that tradition in my own way by supporting the journalists who keep truth alive. Unlike many commercial outlets and mass media that profit from entertainment or those that echo propaganda, independent media give voice to the people. They expose corruption, document abuses and keep the hope of democracy alive. But today they are under attack. Facing arrests, exile, censorship and the constant struggle for funding. Without our support, their voices could fall silent. And with them, so could the truth. This is where you come in. Your support is more than a donation. It is an act of solidarity. Every contribution helps keep a reporter safe, funds investigations and protects the truth from being erased. Together, we can ensure that independent media remain not only a voice for the people, but an active force in Burma's democracy movement. Truth needs allies. Stand with the independent media. Myanmar’s Rohingya have marked eight years since the military launched a brutal “clearance operation” in northern Rakhine State. Homes were burned down, women were raped, and thousands were killed by soldiers.The date is now commemorated each year as Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day on Aug. 25, 2017. Over 700,000 Rohingya had fled across the border into Bangladesh, where hundreds of thousands of Rohingya had already fled previous military assaults. The United Nations called it a textbook example of ethnic cleansing. The United States and many other western countries have labelled it a genocide. The regime’s Union Election Commission (UEC) announced on Monday that its general elections will begin on Dec. 28, with specific dates for polls in January 2026 to be announced later.

Members of Myanmar’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party, which was ousted from government in the 2021 military coup, have demanded the release of Aung San Suu Kyi on her 80th birthday. It has been two months since a post-quake ceasefire was announced by the Brotherhood Alliance and the National Unity Government (NUG) in order to allow humanitarian assistance to reach those in need following a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake. Only the Brotherhood Alliance extended the truce until May 31.
A ceasefire was also announced by the military regime April 2-30, which it then renewed from May 6-31. But DVB has documented 669 attacks carried out by regime forces since then with a total 544 killed and 1,148 injured from March 28 to May 28.

DVB Newscast for Feb. 7, 2025. Over the past 12 months, Myanmar's resistance forces have made territorial gains nationwide. The military regime in Naypyidaw, which seized power after the 2021 coup, now has less than 25 percent of the country under its control, according to a recent BBC investigation.
The National Unity Government (NUG) claims the resistance controls 144 out of Myanmar’s 330 townships. It added that 48 townships are under full resistance control. While 79 remain contested between the military and the resistance. The regime is administering 107 townships, according to the NUG.

The National Unity Government (NUG) President's Office spokesperson Kyaw Zaw responded to Mathieson's comments made in this interview: "We [didn't] say that we control two thirds of the country. We say that resistance forces control two thirds of the countries. We [didn't] say that we fully control and govern 144 townships. We're saying that the resistance forces control, and we didn't say that we fully control 95 townships, towns and cities. We clearly say that [the People's Defense Force captured] and control eight towns and cities out of 95."

This episode of Insight Myanmar Podcast is appearing in the DVB English News feed this week since it features an interview with DVB Chief Editor Aye Chan Naing. It has been edited for brevity.
Episode #284: Aye Chan Naing is a pioneering journalist and activist dedicated to independent media in Myanmar. He co-founded the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) in the years following the military’s violent crackdown during the 1988 student-led uprising.
He was drawn to activism after witnessing the brutality of the regime. After fleeing to the Thai-Burma border, he joined the All Burma Students’ Democratic Front but soon found his passion in journalism, inspired by figures like Swedish journalist, Bertil Lintner.
In 1992, he launched DVB as a shortwave broadcaster based in Norway with support from the government there. He aimed to provide a voice for the pro-democracy movement and challenge the military’s grip on information.
DVB became a vital link for the Burmese people, offering an independent perspective at a time when the government tightly controlled the media. The organization expanded from radio to multimedia, amplifying voices that were otherwise silenced. In 2012, DVB returned to Myanmar following political reforms, but Aye Chan Naing faced obstacles under Aung San Suu Kyi’s administration, which limited media access and failed to foster an open environment.
The situation worsened after the 2021 military coup, forcing DVB back into exile. Despite severe challenges, DVB continues to operate using underground reporters inside Myanmar. “When you have a microphone, you can say whatever you want, right? But if we’re doing exactly the same as the Burmese military, we are no different,” he says. “The more we studied, the more we learned about journalism. And it has to be about the people.”
As Myanmar awaits an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Min Aung Hlaing, which was filed by ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan on Nov. 27, regional human rights organization Fortify Rights has been meeting with countries - those which have signed the Rome Statute to establish the ICC - to hold Myanmar accountable for crimes, including those committed since the 2021 military coup.

DVB Newscast for Oct. 4, 2024. The military has carried out at least 15 airstrikes on Lashio, located in northern Shan State, over the last month. The city is home to 150,000 people who fear more retaliatory airstrikes against the Brotherhood Alliance.
Its Kokang forces, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), took control of Lashio after it seized the Northeast Regional Military Command (RMC) headquarters on Aug. 3.

Thuzar Maung, 46, is a pro-democracy activist from Myanmar and a refugee rights leader in Malaysia. She serves as chair of the Myanmar Muslim Refugee Community and Myanmar Migrant Workers Committee. Since 2021, she has worked closely with Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG).
Thuzar Maung has over 93,000 followers on Facebook, where she criticizes abuses by Myanmar’s military, which took power after a coup on February 1, 2021. Her friends and colleagues expressed concern that she was targeted for her activism and work with the NUG.
2015: Thuzar Maung, her husband and three children, sought asylum in Malaysia fleeing violence against Muslims in Myanmar. They became registered refugees with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Malaysia providing them status and protection under international law.
2015-2021: Thuzar Maung becomes chair of the Myanmar Muslim Refugee Community and Myanmar Migrant Workers Committee in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - which is home to over 150,000 refugees from Myanmar: 102,000 Rohingya and over 47,000 Kachin, Chin and Muslim refugees, states the UNHCR.
2021-2023: Thuzar Maung continued in her role as a Myanmar refugee community leader in Malaysia. She gained over 93,000 followers on Facebook, where she posted criticism of the abuses perpetrated by Myanmar’s military, which ousted the National League for Democracy government, and detained its leaders State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint in February 2021.
Thuzar Maung expressed her support publicly for the newly-formed NUG, the democratic opposition to military rule in Myanmar. She began to use her office in Ampang Jaya district in Kuala Lumpur to organize on behalf of the NUG among the Myanmar refugee community in Malaysia.

DVB Peace Documentary 2022 Award Winner 'Creatio' speaks about his short film "X, Y, Z and then A." It documents the Karenni people and their generations-long struggle for regional autonomy in Burma.
"My name is Creatio.
I produced the documentary film X,Y, Z and then A.
This movie tells the story of Karenni people displaced by conflict.
I traveled to Karenni State in 2018 and 2019.
Since then, I’ve learned alot about the Karenni people.
They have been suffering from Burma’s civil war, from generation to generation.
After the 2021 military coup, a huge number of people were displaced.
I think everyone should hear their stories.
That’s why I produced this documentary.
When anti-coup protests began, people started calling on Generation Z.
And then Generation Alpha are those who come after.
That’s how I got the idea for the name Generation X, Y, Z and then A.
Each new generation of the Karenni people have to face a never-ending conflict.
I interviewed refugees in Ban Mai Naing Soi refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border.
My main character, he arrived at the camp with his adopted parents in 1996.
He was only six years old when he arrived at the camp. And now, he has nieces and nephews.
I am very happy that I received the permission to document his story.
At first, I didn't think it would win the award from DVB. I am really excited to receive it.
But this kind of happiness is complicated.
It’s like we are all in this bad situation but something good happened.
And still, we don’t know how to get out of this situation.
It’s great that the audience knows this story now. I am happy about that.
The main reason I did this story is that I want more people to know about what's happening.
I would like to make it into a feature documentary, about 50 minutes long.
Because I would like to document each generation of his family.
A 15 minute film is a very short documentary.
When I edited it was very difficult for me to cut parts.
I wanted to show more emotion and how they have been suffering.
But I can only show 10 percent of this.
That’s why I want to produce a longer documentary with more details.

Ei Pencilo, 31, is a Burmese author who escaped Yangon during the February 2021 military coup. Her memoir "Burma Spring Revolution: 100 Days of Darkness" documents how she evaded arrest in Burma, and ended up in the U.S. It was published in South Korea.
"My name is Pencilo.
I adopted this as my pen name in 2012.
Before that, I wrote under my given name.
Since 2015, I have published four books as Pencilo.
I wrote a book about my own experiences and what happened during the first 100 days of the coup.
I call it “Burma Spring Revolution: 100 days of Darkness.”
A South Korean book publisher contacted me and asked to publish it in the Korean language.
This is my first time being published in Korean.
I also want to raise awareness about Burma in South Korea.
Burma’s struggle for democracy is similar to South Korea’s
It would be impossible to publish a book like this in Burma now.
In the book I have documented what the Burma Army did to the people.
I wrote it as a record of the coup.
So, I’d prefer to publish it in other languages.
I am thinking of publishing an ebook and a physical copy.
The e-book is for readers in Burma who won’t be able to purchase the physical book.
I plan to translate my book into English so international readers can learn what happened in Burma.
The Spring revolution is more important than my book.
I will try to publish in Burmese and English.
All proceeds will go to the Spring Revolution.
I began writing on February 4th as I escaped from Yangon to the border.
The book shares how I evaded arrest and made it out of Burma.
I also wrote about the protests, and the atrocities committed against peaceful protesters.
Once I reached the U.S., I couldn't finish writing it.
But after three months, I could finally finish it.
My book marks two important days imprinted in my mind.
Mya Thwe Thwe Khaing was the first anti-coup protester killed by the military.
Nyi Nyi Aung Htet Naing was shot at the Hledan protest.
I heard the news about their deaths the day I arrived at the border.
I had never heard of anything as cruel as killing these peaceful protesters.
At my age all I knew about Burma’s brutal crackdowns and killing its own people have been from history books.
I never thought it could really happen in 2021.
I was really shocked."

Human rights activists held a rally at the Three Kings Monument in Chiang Mai, Thailand on Dec. 6 against the planned execution of seven student activists in Burma. Organizers gave speeches condemning the military council in Burmese, Thai, and English.
“We the young Thai and Myanmar students and activists seriously requests to stop the violence and oppression of the Burmese people,” an organizer said. The fascists claim that social justice makes people weak, but these are the values which are inspiring normal people here to do great things. They are the values which we have set aside our lives to stand up for; which our friends have gone to prison and been martyred for. The coup regime would like for you to believe that our struggle is doomed. But we are just getting started. We will never live at peace with dictatorship, and we will never stop fighting until Myanmar democracy has secured its place in a world of liberty and social justice for all. But we need the world's help. Foreign governments must stop funding this illegitimate coup regime which is waging a war against Myanmar people. In particular, we call upon the Thai government to stop buying gas from the junta. This week, Thailand is hosting leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region at an APEC Economic Summit, which aims to 'support sustainable economic growth and prosperity.' But it should be clear by now that authoritarian violence is the greatest threat to stability and economic growth around the world today. Here in Myanmar, they have plunged the country into chaos. Every day businesses are destroyed and villages are burned, and thousands more refugees are created. Just a few years ago, Myanmar was supposed to be, and was in fact becoming, one of the new frontiers of global economy growth. But now, thanks to the military junta's genocidal violence and insane lust for power, Myanmar's economy is being driven into the ground. How can the Thailand government and other attendees to the APEC Economic Summit talk about 'sustainable economic growth' if they are actively enabling these terrorists?"
