Jason emphasizes the importance of understanding the principle of a calorie deficit for fat loss and explains why fad diets don't work in the long term. This weeks podcast will give you a framework to start and adapt a plan to continue to get you results, when things don't line up for the ideal.

December is the time of year where the average dad puts on 3-5 kg of fat. December through to mid January is where most people lump fitness into the "too hard" basket and as a result, start the year off on the back foot. But that's not you.
You can create a plan that keeps you losing fat, or maintaining your results with very little extra effort - you just need to eat like an adult, and focus on the reasons why this time of year is so special. Time with family and friends. It doesnt have to be about food and drink.
Stop making it a big deal to focus on your fitness in December, and letting go of 10% of the year just because theres a couple of days of celebration.

Becoming a fit dad is more than losing fat and having abs. It's about who you are, and the example that you set for your children. There are plenty of reasons to not get in good shape - but most of them are terrible. They're excuses that people hide behind to not face the reality that they aren't being the best version of themselves.
You owe it to your kids to set a good example. To follow through on your word and be willing to do hard things. To sacrifice short term gratification for a bigger goal.

Being in a rut can make you feel like theres no light at the end of the tunnel. You're doing the same things over and over again not getting where you want to be - whether it's in your work, relationships or your health. So how do you get out of it?
You need to first take ownership of the fact that there is a problem, and you're not handling it as well as you could be. You need to reach out and seek some guidance, you need accountability and you need to be willing to change the game plan with daily actions to move the needle forward, or you continue to stay in the same place.
A rut is more mental than it is physical, so you need to start with your mindset.

90% of people who start a fat loss plan end up putting the weight back on in 3 years or less. Why is that? There's 6 key things that people do wrong that makes them either give up early, or not keep their results long term.
If you go into a plan with the intention to change your lifestyle and not just make a short term quick fix then you're far more likely to keep the weight off. If you've ever struggled to keep weight off in the past this one is for you.

Your life is in your hands. Too many Dads give control away by blaming circumstances, and things "out of their control" for the way life is, completely ignoring all of the things within their control.
It's up to you to determine your lifes path. No one elses. Once you assume responsibility for your life you can direct it to what you truly want. Live a life by design, not by default.

One of the cornerstones of what we do here at the fit dads club is teaching Dads how to be flexible in their approach, and not be all or nothing on a restrictive diet or exercise plan.
However this flexibility for a lot of people needs to be earned. Sometimes you need a more rigid approach to limit decision fatigue and actually stick to something, so once those old habits are broken you can introduce flexibility without issue.
Flexibility is a tool, but before flexibility you need structure, until you learn enough to make decisions on the fly that don't take as much mental effort.

If you try to make everyone happy, you make no one happy.
This is the root of criticism - we try to make everyone around us happy at the expense of ourselves - and its got to stop.
To deal with criticism we need to know where it may be coming from, and why someone may be saying it, and we need to know how to have the proper conversation with our friends and family so they don't get defensive and instead become supportive on your journey.

Chasing quick fixes leads to a cycle of restriction, binging, and giving up. When you expect to get unrealistic results you get disappointed when they don't deliver - and quick fixes never do. Losing 5kg of water weight in 2 weeks isn't actually progressing. Long term progression takes time, but you have to be willing to put in that time to get any meaningful result.

You don't get what you deserve in life - you get what you tolerate. If you tolerate a lower wage, or a less than loving spouse, or a lower level of health - that's what you get. So in order for you to get more, you have to stop tolerating less for your life - or accept that you'll never get more.

The All or Nothing Mindset is what stops most people being able to maintain their results. They're either all in, training 6 days a week, or they're eating pizza and cookies saying that it's too hard.
You have to stop needing things to be perfect in order to get started. The day you accept progress over perfection is the day you start really moving forward.

Abs, or a 6 Pack, are pretty divisive. People think they're a sign of vanity, others a sign of commitment and hard work. At the end of the day it's not really about abs for the sake of it. Its about becoming the person who's dedicated, committed and hard working enough to achieve a low level of body fat and enough muscle mass to show a 6 pack.
If this is something you want, but you haven't seriously gone for it for fear of failure, looking vain, the process being too hard... then listen to this episode in full, and you may learn how simple it can be, and achieve something you may never have thought you could.

Once you make a rock solid commitment - nothing will stop you. Too many people don't make that commitment for fear of failure, or more accurately what they think will happen if they fail.
Don't make it about failure. It's not about that - it's about never really giving it a real go, and if that's how you live, that's how your kids will learn to live too.

Most people who say they don't have enough time to get fit think they need to be in the gym for hours and hours each week, and take 5 hours on a Sunday to meal prep. The bottom line is - if you want the result, there are so many different ways you can achieve it, you just need to be willing to be resourceful.

CJ started his journey from emotional rock bottom - no real hope that things would change. He, like many other dads, had given up on weight loss after trying all the different fads, diets, workouts and pills out there, and none of it ever making a real difference.
Then he met TJ, and over the course of 9 months lost over 40kg, and regained his life again - becoming a role model for his kids, inspiring them to exercise with him, and eventually completing a 12 hour, 56km spartan obstacle race.
His story is an inspiration for all dads out there - make sure you listen to the full thing to hear about his biggest goal yet.

The hard road is also the road less travelled. There's a phrase "choose your hard" which often means the hard things you do now, will save you from the hardships of life later.
The hard of getting up off the couch now, means you don't deal with the hard of not being able to get up off the couch in 20 years time. Choose the harder path now for the best version of you.

The number 1 thing Dads struggle with in their fitness journey, is balancing it with their family commitments. There are plenty of challenges that you will face, but the big ones are usually around the time sacrifice, and not being in control of everything you eat when your partner makes dinners.
These things can be big, but they aren't the immoveable objects most people see them as. Instead we need to see them as constraints that we can work around, and that requires communication, planning and commitment. Listen to the full episode, and don't forget to rate it and leave a review!

Being coachable doesn't mean blindly doing everything your coach tells you to do - but it does require a level of humility and trust, and a willingness to try new things. Most people think about trying to find the best coach, not trying to be the best client. It's a two way street, you need a good coach and you also need to be a good client.
You need to have a student mindset, and bring patience to the process - this is why coachable clients get the best results.
In this episode of the Fit Dad Club Podcast TJ & Jason run through why it's important to be coachable, what some of the benefits outside of just getting a physical results are, and how to actually cultivate a 'coachable' mindset.

Being mentally tough over mentally weak isn't about having to 'man up' or hide your emotions. It's about doing the things you said you were going to do even when they're uncomfortable. It's being willing to see and make short term sacrifices for the long term gains.
Todays society is focused on instant gratification and immediate reward, to the point where people are numbed to the idea of having to delay gratification, or have to do uncomfortable things. In order to have anything worthwhile you have to be willing to get uncomfortable, and that requires some degree of mental toughness.

Emotional resilience isn't about not having emotions, or ignoring them - it's about being able to bounce back and recover when things don't go your way. When you're prone to letting outside influences affect your emotions, that's when you need to cultivate emotional resilience. If you don't you're at the whim of the randomness of the world.
The stronger your inner world, the less the outer world can affect it. Join TJ & Jason as they discuss different methods to get back on track when life throws you off, and different perspectives to create a shift in your emotional management.
