I spent a full 7 days working the day job and playing around in the new Cosmic desktop from System76's Pop!_OS.
Some things I forgot to mention in the video:

Would like to have a pywal type effect that would change the accent and active hint colors to match the current wallpaper.
Im using 2 GB of ram at idle. During my normal workday with 3 browsers, 6-9 tabs open and the occasional Libreoffice sheet open. Ram was typically around 5-6 GB avg with one peak that I noticed was up to 10 GB when I also had a vm running for a short while. These are nearly the same that I get with Pop shell (gnome version) on the same machine.
Multi monitor on Cosmic is a dream come true. This is the proper way for a DE to implement tiling window features. Not this convoluted crap that Gnome and KDE did. Its obvious that the Cosmic devs are true tiling window manager fans. This is 100% AWESOME! A user wants to take advantage of multiple desktops. Most will use 1 or 2 windows per desktop. Cosmic makes me think of what you would get if i3/bspwm and gnome had a baby.

Although it's still in an alpha phase Pop!_OS's Cosmic desktop is very near time to release to beta. It seems to be stable enough to use for an average computer user. I wouldnt suggest it for a power user. I take you on a tour of what they have got finished and what they have left to do.
Its close enough that I am going to challenge myself to use it for a week during the day job. Check back on Sunday 5/03 for the results of my Cosmic challenge.

You all totally missed the point of my last video. You were thinking I was praising snaps. I was not. I said a lot of the hate that snaps get is not true and the vast majority of Ubuntu's users do not care about snaps. In this video I explain how you missed the point and why.
I also explain how easy it is to remove snaps entirely if you feel you must use Ubuntu but hate snaps.

Of course, obviously easiest solution is to just use a different distro that doesnt have snap. But if you do that, then what would you have to complain about?

Commands from the video:
snap list
sudo snap remove --purge snap-name

Do these last
sudo snap remove --purge snapd
sudo apt remove --autoremove snapd

Then block snapd by creating a file at /etc/apt/preferences.d/nosnap.pref Use what ever text editor you lke. Im using vim.

sudo vim /etc/apt/preferences.d/nosnap.pref

Add this to that file:

To prevent repository packages from triggering the installation of snap,this file forbids snapd from being installed by APT.Package: snapd
Pin: release a=*
Pin-Priority: -10

Jellyfin is an open source streaming media server. It can be hosted on a VPS or in your local network on an old laptop or even a Raspberry Pi. The specs required to run it are pretty low so it can run on just about anything.

I have it on my home network on an old desktop with an i7 and 20gb of ram. It's running CasaOS on top of Ubuntu Server 22.04.

Install is super simple and even easier if you are using something like CasaOS, Umbrel or Yunohost. They all have one click installers.

With Jellyfin you can manage and access your movies, tv shows, music, books, photos and even live tv/dvr from any device. Through any web browser and there are also apps for the mobile platforms.

I streamed this over on my VimmTV channel earlier. They used to have VOD's but I dont see that as available anymore. So I am uploading it to Cast.Garden. I know it's not a podcast and I will probably get in trouble for it. If I do I will start moving these over to 3Speak.

This one was basically a test run anyways. I'm not really interested in creating podcasts or any serious kind of written posts. Havent been in the mood for quite a few months. But I have become addicted to playing Team Fortress 2 daily after dinner. So I am going to start streaming those on VimmTV and uploading to either CastGarden or 3Speak.

Tonight I died an unusual amount of times. Waaaaay more than normal. Lol. I'll chalk it up to being a bad day and frustrated with getting it set up. The manipulators conspire among themselves, while wielding weapons of war, are salivating for the opportunity to turn them on you and I. They use the media of all kinds to turn friends and families against each other. If you dare to speak something out of line you could become a "Fugitive". Even in your own home. In a world where it feels like everybody is going crazy you will feel like you're "The Last in Line".

The answer to all of this is pretty simple. Listen closely to the lyrics of the last song. There are an estimated 8,082,208,001 people right now and rising every second. If we all emulated the actions of Tom Macdonald and just not hate ourselves. Be comfortable with yourself and dont be jealous of what someone else has. Be happy with what you, yourself do with your life. Help other people when they need it and just have a general sense of compassion for your fellow human being. Just imagine what would happen to those manipulators in charge. They would lose all control over everything. Remember that another person only has the power over you that you give to them.

The power of the individual is what will make the difference. As it always have through out history. It all starts with you. In 2024 I'm going to commit to being a "Stronger Version" of myself.

I gave Ubuntu 23.04 a good try and I like it. IMO it's the best one so far. You dont have to use the snaps if you dont want. Just install Flatpak and boom. Get your work done.
The new flutter installer worked like a charm on my machine except for not adding a swap partition. Two weeks solid as a daily driver for work and play and no issues after adding the swap.

3Speak has made a post detailing an overview of their new Acela Core. I’m assuming the image in the post is meant to try to make it more simpler to see the overview. But it looks much more like a wiring diagram or schematic than an overview. I honestly dont see how or why there is a need to reinvent the wheel when there are existing solutions in play already. To us this looks like added points of failure, massive development and constant ongoing maintenance. Something that will require a lot of overhead to operate. Not to mention how many points of attack vectors will this open up?

I've noticed a rift is beginning to occur. Many people are knocking CastGarden & similar apps without even trying them. If you are one I ask you to stop doing it. You are being no better than the old guard on Web2 screaming that Web3 is shit. You are being a two faced cry baby worried about your personal investments and denying what #Web3 is really about.

Web3 is not a crypto bros only destination.

It does not belong to any single blockchain.
It does not belong to any single protocol.
It does not belong to any single ecosystem of apps.
If there is an app you should try it and make your own decision to use it or not.
Dont try to sway others as to what you personally like or even have an investment in. If the app is better it will win.
Dont ever try to be a maxi on one single blockchain or protocol. If that happens and we end up with only one guess what. You just became centralized, again. In the immortal words of Red Foreman, "Dumbass".
Dont do the proverbial "look a gift horse in the mouth". These apps have expenses and there is typically a value attached to a blockchain which it then becomes a currency. That is how they pay for the physical infrastructure for the apps and the development of them. That stuff is not, never was and never will be free. Some of these apps/developers do take a percentage of rewards. I know of only a couple that have agreed to take less as the rewards become more valuable. Many of other projects have never stated that they would take less. So that insinuates that they will keep the same cut. No matter how valuable that token is. This is why you see them shilling so hard for one coin or the other. BE AWARE OF WHAT IS THEIR END GOAL!
The end goal for #Web3 is NOT to make a huge profit for a few select people. The end goal is Freedom, privacy, security & autonomy for all users.

Performance
The performance reviews below are from my POV. You may have a different experience. I am not trying encourage/discourage anybody from using these apps. You are the one who will ultimately make the decisioni as to what you choose to use.

Aureal

Overall performance can be iffy at times.

The look of the site is eerily similar to Podvine. Like so close they could be clones.
Site feels heavy & sometimes the pages tend to take an extreme amount of time to render.
Consumer POV - Decent Works fine if somewhat slow. Podcast updates come in just as they should.
Can not consume content without an account. Impression of a walled garden
Content creator is different story. Sometimes the loading of your own podcasts just dont happen.
Post editor font is hard to read
The description input section doesnt scroll correctly. You need to write out your show notes/description in an outside app & copy paste into it. No preview available.
Upload speeds are very slow for small audio only files. I never personally tested a video file.
Hosting files somewhere else such as Anchor can be a pain to import. With the feeds taking anywhere from a couple of hours to days. Possibly having to ping support to do it manually at times.
Live rooms have been in alpha for over a year and do not work like standard live streams. They are much more like Twitter Spaces or Clubhouse.

My personal opinion use them to get the experience. They truly are great people and mean well. But I think they should focus on nailing down the basics such as the import issues and site loading times to where there will never be another problem with them again before implementing new features. I'm also not of a fan of the walled garden impression. You should be showcasing the content creators on the front page. Not asking for an account.
But they do have some exciting stuff coming down the pike with Unstoppable domains.

3Speak

Overall performance is similar to Aureal.

Consumers POV it is decent.
Somewhat slow with buffering but that is a technological issue. As I understand it videos are hosted on IPFS and that can be slow to load. I have noticed that the older the video the longer it takes to load. I have several of my older videos 1-2 years old that just will not do anything.
Can view content without an account. Cant comment or vote without account.
Creator POV - Decent
upload is slower than Aureal. Mostly due to video files are larger to begin with. Drag & drop is available. No preview so again copy/paste from external editor.
set community, tags, thumbnail & beneficiaries are available
Rendering can be extremely slow. Such as "go to bed and check it in the morning slow". But this depends on the time of day and how big the que is. through trial and error you can find the best time for you to upload.
Keeps 11% as a beneficiary to help pay for encoding and storage.

CastGarden

Overall performance is OUTSTANDING! On both the consumer and creator sides. I have yet to experience any issues loading a video to watch or uploading and encoding a video or audio file.
The speeds of page loads and posting episodes rival YouTube. I've even experienced some encoding on YouTube that I had to walk away for several hours. Peertube/CastGarden seems to even beat it there.
Consumer log in to Hive account with Keychain & or Hivesigner
Log in to post with your CastGarden account.
Posting experience is very easy and intuitive.
CastGarden keeps 10% and posts to Hive through the CastGarden account. The user is then 90% beneficary of that post.

Final thoughts:
In my opinion, CastGarden is the clear winner here. It's a better user experience. More stable and has nearly 700 contributors from around the world working on and maintaing the Peertube base. The HiveTube plugin is the number 1 most downloaded plugin for Peertube. Which means there is a literal ton of new instances out there that are implenting Hive into them. Bridging the Fediverse with the Hive blockchain is mind boggleing to me.
This is what #Web3 is all about. Everybody gets so wrapped up in pumping and shilling crypto coins they forget the important things. The whole reason for #Web3 isn't to shill coins and make money. #Web3 is about the individual. People like you and me. This is what we need to get mass adoption for #Web3. A place that just works with no bullshit drama & no reinventing of tech. Just use what is already there and adapt it to make it work. Thats what is important to the end user.

Just wanted to announce that I am moving all my personal podcasting content to Cast Garden I will give more details on why in a post tomorrow. The Defluenced Podcast will not be effected and available in all the places it currently is. But for my UB - Live, NTROradio and others those will all be distributed through Cast Garden. Allen and I go over some things and reiterate that Web3 can solve a content creators problems such as these. It doesn't matter the size of the creators audience. Web3 can and will scale to what they need.

Web3 creators own their content, their audience and their platform. It's cost effective and profitable. And you can most likely do all of that without sponsors or any kind of advertising.

If I could get a message to Crowder. All I want is for him to at least look at some form of Web3 technology. Something like Hive, a time tested, proven, working and scalable platform that is 100% open source and free. He could have a home base website to host his content, even his own social media platform to go along with the content. Stephen dont keep playing with the old tech. Embrace the new tech and OWN your stuff! Dont look for contracts. Look for solutions for your passion!

We had an issue where I (Unkle Bonehead) lost the keys for the Defluenced Hive account. I ended up having to start a new one. So make sure you are following DefluencedCast

Good Ideas* Back them up * Back them up again in a different place. * Back them up a third time in yet another place. * Print them out on paper. * Put them in a safe. * Send a copy to a trusted friend or family member. * Repeat as many times as you feel necessary.

Bad ideas

Send them in unencrypted email to the FBI, CIA or any other 3 letter agency
Post it notes on your monitor
Bulletin board at your church, the library, or other public place
On hard drives that have a history of failing
Let your browser remember them
Open forums and message boards
Tattoo on your forearm
On your dog’s ID collar
On a refrigerator magnet in your RV.
Let Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, or another exchange hold your keys (NOT your keys, NOT your crypto)

People get banned from social media. Because they dont tow the line and big tech answers to no one. They are in control. Whether it’s left or right. If the platform has a TOS that states they can delete your account. Then you should expect it to happen at any time for any reason. Those kinds of terms means you are only ok with the current operators of the service. Until you do or say something that reflects bad on their real customers, the advertisers. Because you know they cant sell bad product (you) to their customers.

In this episode we are going to go over the criteria and expectations that we think should be included in a Cryptosocial media platform. What we think you should look for in a social media home.

The Criteria:1. Is it decentralized? * How is it decentralized? Blockchain or federated? * Can you “trust” the platform to be there or can it disappear? This is the problem I (UB) have with the Fediverse. Most people cant self host so therefore they must put their trust in someone else to maintain an instance. Which means if that person runs out of money that instance can be shutdown without notification to the users of it.

Can it delete, ban or block you from access to your account?
If it’s a blockchain can you power down/unstake, convert and/or withdraw your crypto you earned on it?
How vibrant is the ecosystem that is being built around it? Is there more than one frontend to it?
How easy is it to get on board? Does it require any kind of KYC?
How is the platform funded? Venture capital? Private funding? Who is paying for the infrastructure?
Is there a company behind the blockchain? (This is important to me UB) I am not a fan of a company funded blockchain because that typically means they hold the lion's share of the crypto and most likely fold up and move on if there isn’t a decent ROI.

Just wanted to give you all an update and announce when the podcast will officially start.

Episode 001 An Interview with Ourselves will drop in the feed on Wednesday September 13, 2022. Then every episode after that will land in your podcast catcher each Wednesday.

We will be recording the episodes 8 days in advance of release. Those we will record live and you are welcome to come watch/listen to us live in our Discord server as we do them. We will interact with you and do our best to answer questions if you have any.

We will be recording them on Tuesdays at 11am through the end of October. When we may need to make a change on recording time. But we will cross that bridge when we get there.
