The theunbrokenground’s Podcast: Recent Episodes

As culture continues to drift into extremes and consider the other side as being wrong, and not just wrong, but either morally deficient or blind, there must be a better way to live. While determining who is and is not in a group is a tried-and-true tactic of creating community, it also leads to labeling. And labels lead to dehumanizing and normalizing treating others poorly. Jesus, however, stated simply that we were to love our neighbors (and our enemies). Paul affirmed there were not special designations. So why do we fall back into familiar patterns? We should live out community, each bringing our ideas and messy lives and figure out how to love each other (even if we don’t always agree). I think that is where we find the unbroken ground- right in the middle of community.

I think I only like mysteries I can solve. That is probably why I love escape rooms...solve the puzzle in 60 minutes or less. God is the ultimate mystery. How does the Trinity work? What about foreknowledge, and if Jesus knew everything, it would be fine, but why is He physically reacting to the stress in the garden of Gethsemane? This podcast mostly just asks those questions... please, no expectations of reaching an answer.

It is hard to reconcile the fact that someone can preach the gospel of Jesus and have speech filled with hate. But it happens all the time. Finding Jesus does not mean that we will immediately have the correct thought. Most of us are stuck in our culture, and we are products of our community. And sometimes we don't even realize that there is a problem until we meet someone who makes us reevaluate. Jesus was constantly making people rethink their comfortable thoughts and challenging them to look deeper and really see. He still does that today, if you will let Him.

I thought about alternatively titling this one, "Tips for Wilderness Survival". I think we tend to think poorly of the Israelites who were wandering in the wilderness. How dare they doubt that God would provide daily manna, we think to ourselves, as we check our 401 (k) and savings account. We almost sell the idea that abundance comes with salvation. But we really should sell the fact that contentment comes with salvation, whether we have abundance or live in scarcity. Jesus knew it, and perhaps that is why, when He taught the disciples to pray, they were to ask only for their daily bread. If you are walking in the wilderness, this one is for you, and if you aren't currently, listen anyway because every follower finds their journey includes the wilderness eventually

You probably haven't murdered someone or even tried. But have you allowed your heart to be hardened so much that you dehumanize people? Particularly those who might not be like you or think like you or look like you. Be careful, Jesus warns that darkness lurks in the hearts that can call our fellow humans fools.

Matthew 5:21-22

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. This one is a bit whimsical, as I consider the political repercussions of a government that tries to live out the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount. Could a government truly love its enemies? How does a government store its treasures in heaven? We all have a kingdom (even if it is just within our hearts) that we must submit to the rule of Jesus or go our own way. Who rules your heart?

Has Christianity changed since Jesus died on the cross? There has been a lot of disdain for using progressive to describe Christianity, claiming that Christianity is the same, never changing. While the Bible clearly says Jesus is the same, yesterday, today, and forever, the book of Acts shows how the church wrestled with what it meant to follow Jesus. Peter (who walked with Jesus) had to be corrected for his wrong behavior. I am not arguing for accepting every theological opinion, but rather praying we will be like the Berean church. Let us test everything (including what theology reformers established) as we chase after Jesus.

Do you like asking questions? Jesus was asked many questions as he walked with and taught his followers. Jesus used questions as a way to teach. But many are suspicious of questions. We have more access to information than at any other time in history, but studies show we aren't more knowledgeable. Rather, we have doubled down on our conviction that we solely hold the truth. We have lost our ability to doubt. Good questions help us walk with and through doubt into deeper faith. How good are you at asking questions?

What skills are you passing on to your children or young people to evaluate culture? It is hard to be different. Different can make you vulnerable and lead to isolation. Walking alongside others, especially youth, in ministry one of the most common topics is God's love. As humans hoping to connect with a spiritual being in God, we find it hard to believe that God loves us. We hear God loves us unconditionally, but do we believe it? We see how hard it is to make relationships work among humans, and we convince ourselves it must be that hard between us and God. Not only that, but no one knows us like we do. All the dark thoughts, evil impulses, and sins that can be a part of our story must surely disqualify us from the love of God. And yet, Jesus tells simple stories to remind us it does not. A lost coin, a lost sheep, and a prodigal are the examples he used to teach God's love.

What is so wrong with getting old? American Culture is built around staying young, healthy, and beautiful for as long as you can. But in God's kingdom, it is those peopl who have lived lives for decades as they chase after God that have great honor. How can our communities reclaim the prestige of being old? Who is in your community? Despite our many efforts to make following Jesus about a singular, personal experience - it just doesn't work that way. Much of the Bible is written to groups of people or communities. Even the most singular verses have the background and understanding that they are to be lived out in a community of people. So who are you intentionally following as an apprentice to Jesus? Who are you walking with shoulder to shoulder each day? Who are you calling to follow you, as you follow Jesus? We aren't meant to do this alone. So find your community (if you don't have one), and let's start spurring on each other to love and good deeds!

I'm just going to come out and admit it. The theology of God's love being reckless doesn't bother me. Mark 10:17-22 English Standard Version The Rich Young Man17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

If you are a follower of Jesus then you are called. Some are called to be pastors (vocational ministry) and others are not. Regardless, you have been given gifts, talents, experiences, and provisions to do ministry. But don't get it twisted, doing for God is not the same as having a relationship with God.

Ephesians 4:11-16
New Revised Standard Version,
11 The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.

Growing up in the Evangelical conservative South, I expected altar calls at the end of every sermon. A good majority of those sermons focused on the condition of your soul after death. Often, the Gospel was unwittingly reduced to a way to be sure you made it to heaven and didn't go to hell. This is part two of my scattered ramblings on the Gospel and what Jesus meant when He talked about the good news. Is it all about hell? Or do we need to push further into the narrative to understand what it means to be a disciple of Jesus?

If you were to go back in time, how would you want to be taught the Gospel? What methods would you keep, and what themes would you bring forward? What might you skip or leave out? Picking up on the last episode's theme, the topic of this Podcast is Jesus' heart. Thinking like God must mean that we love like God. And we can look to Jesus' example of how to have the heart of God. Do you love religious rules and requirements more than you love people? Do you support your political party even when it marginalizes and dehumanizes groups of people? In his letter, why does John tell us that if you say you love God but don't love your brother, then you are a liar?

Hello Fellow Travelers! One way to turn our eyes from Jesus is to look at the waves and the turmoil around us. We most commonly think of the negative parts of life that will often distract us. But what if we are equally capable of being distracted by the good things in this life? What if we make it our passion to chase after the gifts rather than the giver? One of the areas from Ep. 45 that caused worry was the false belief that we were in control of everything. Similar to that false belief is believing we should constantly be experiencing material blessings and seeing ministry success. What if we instead viewed things as a more natural rhythm? What if we cried out not for the gifts but instead found the heart of the Father?

Hello Fellow Travelers! Promise this is the last bio episode. I tackle the question that many people have thought, though most don't ask me directly. Yes, I have a master's of Divinity, and I am an ordained minister. But I followed a different path than even I had imagined. Not unlike my Christmas course correction on where I was going to college, after graduation, I was once again in a place to reconsider everything. Here are the highlights of how I went from interviewing for a church to moving to another state in less than 30 days.

Hello Fellow Travelers! Unofficially, Paul season 2. One of the most impactful experiences of my life was spent at 11,000 ft in elevation, living outside a mountain town in southern Colorado. God brought me to a crucible that shaped me and exposed me to different ways of thinking about the world. This was no longer the deep south, conservative Christian country - I got to meet people who would forever change how I see God and the world.

Hello Fellow Travelers! Finally, a topic I am an expert on. Me! In this episode, I think through the different twists and turns I experienced while pursuing where God was calling me. I never had a five-point plan to obtain my perfect job, and I always had a willing heart that was open to say yes to whatever and wherever I felt God leading. I hope you will find encouragement in knowing that God is a good father who directs our steps and shapes our hearts. I hope my story reminds you (as it reminded me as I walked back through it) of how good God is and how faithful He remains.

Hello, Fellow Travelers! Have you ever made a good decision but gotten terrible results? Or have you had a bad decision that turned out just OK? Light bulbs exploded as I used the discussion to frame some of my recent life experiences. The last half of the podcast focuses, at least in part, on what this means as we add in a spiritual lens and dimension.

Hello fellow travelers! Authority - what is it good for? I'm thinking about leadership again (sorry, it's stuck in my head/heart right now). Is authority leadership? If you have authority, are you a leader? If you are a leader, are you a good leader just because you have it? How did Jesus interact or think about earthly ideas of authority? Leaders, this is a good one to listen to and then think through how and why you lead. Who do you want to be like, the Good Shepherd or earthly kings?

Hello Fellow Travelers! How do leaders deal with failure and trust? Leaders must know how and what they communicate when working through failure. One key is realizing that as a leader, you have already gone through the change's mental, emotional, and spiritual realities that a change brings. But the people who are following you haven't. Don't leave them behind.

Hello, Fellow Travelers! Continuing in the theme of leadership, this week I pontificate on trust. Why do we trust leaders and people in leadership? There is both risk and benefit to an established cultural system that presumes trust. But broken trust can be deadly for a leader. Trust is one of the reasons to be wary of shortcuts for leadership. Leaders must always be vigilant for lack of accountability and ownership in their organizations which corrodes trust.

Hello Fellow Travelers! Does the Old Testament and New Testament contradict itself? In Psalm 139, David asks God to know his heart and see that he hates the wicked. Jesus explains we are to love our enemies. In this podcast, I work through some of that tension (as I see it so far) and give my thoughts on what David (and Jesus) declared. Wrestling with what God is saying and wants to say should be a hallmark of every believer. Hopefully, this process I go through is helpful to you.

Hello Fellow Travelers! Do you follow Jesus for real? Growing up Christian, there seemed to be two extremes to live within. Follow the rules, which is legalism, or do whatever you want as long as you say the "sinner's prayer." What does it look like to follow Jesus for real? How do you practice hearing the Holy Spirit? Are you looking for more than just a Sunday morning commitment? It might not be a clear connection, but a video I watched claiming the KJV was the only translation without any error made me think about what it means to follow Jesus. As a disclaimer, I don't have a favorite or "only" version of the Bible. But if you do, please research the translation's strengths, weaknesses, and biases. Also, let us rejoice that God can change and move lives using each translation of the Bible and is not limited to one.

Hello fellow travelers! How much is enough? Why do humans struggle with only using or taking what they need? Is there a level of having that will make you happy? From day one, the struggle of missing out or having something held back from us has been an issue. Adam and Eve could walk with God in the garden, but they were tempted by the idea that there might be something more. The serpent convinced them that God was holding out on them. And from that point forward, we have lived lives that have struggled with finding something to satisfy our desires and souls. What do Jesus and Paul say about it? Listen in to find out!

Hello fellow traveler! Want a wandering tale of how the podcast started and an update on what I am blogging about on Patheos? Boy, are you in luck!! Episode 30 is a look back. No one saw that one coming and playing four-dimensional chess and winning. In all seriousness, this was a good one to do a little reminiscing on and discuss what I have been blogging about since I took a bit of a break in June. Is Jesus calling you to the wilderness? Is your God too safe, and do your worship comfort rather than character building? God loves you just the way you are! But He loves you too much to leave you that way!

Hello fellow travelers! I am wrapping up my thought process on unity with this podcast focused on community. Our culture lionizes self-reliance and abhors dependence, but does that reflect the Bible or something else? Where do you find community? Jesus told us that the world would know we were his followers through our love for each other. How are you showing that love this week? We only have so many hours and so much to do each week. Are you taking time to build up your community?

Hello Fellow Travelers! Still thinking about uniformity and unity. Looking further at the destruction and division that "You versus Me" and "I am right and you are wrong" culture brings to the Church. How do we live like Jesus and be able to say, "Your sins are forgiven," followed up by the expectation to "go and sin no more"? How do we live out a love that always hopes, trusts, and perseveres in a world that calls us to focus on being experts on who is right and who is wrong?

View Details

Hello fellow travelers! This week I continue the topic of unity versus uniformity. In the first part of the podcast, I discuss the awful truth that churches often enforce uniformity by denying community. Deep roots of dangerous uniformity can be traced to a lack of discipleship and not trusting the Holy Spirit to convict believers. In the second part of the podcast, I talk about a verse someone quoted on a Facebook post about loving your enemies. The lack of context in the person's comment and reading of the scripture made me meditate on it this week. Does Jesus intend that we should be ready to carry a sword against our enemies? Matthew 10:34-36 specifically references the instructions Jesus gives to His disciples when they are sent out. The reference to a sword and not peace was in light of family relationships. Hopefully, those aren't your enemies, but even if they were, the idea is that God is first, and out of our love for Him, only then can we love people well.

I walk through my upbringing that anyone who wasn't in the same theological camp is likely wrong. And how I have moved on from that. The beautiful unity is found in doctrine and understanding the underpinnings of theology. I think about how the world should see the difference in our lives.

Hello Fellow Travelers! How do you create unity? What type of authority best serves ministry and Christians? Is uniformity good enough? This week I am wondering how a church or organization can create unity. Typically, organizations use a culture of authority and tie it to a source of power. But churches, especially Baptist churches like my childhood was spent in, often have equal authority among members. Is there a clear idea of how Jesus created unity?

Hello fellow travelers! In light of the subtweeting/posting about truth and sin this month on the "Gram," this week's episode considers sins we don't like discussing. There is some rumination on truth and love and finding a good balance, but mostly my mind wanders into what would happen if Jesus showed up today. And he approached an average American Christian. And then Jesus asked that person to give up everything, sell everything, and follow Him. What if that person was you? What would you do and say?

Jesus and the 5 Loaves and 2 Fish: An Invitation to Participate | Paul Tanner (patheos.com)

Matthew 14

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.

18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Did Jesus have an agenda? Did he hang out with certain types of people because he was trying to prove how tolerant and cool he was? Or is that question the wrong place to start when thinking about Jesus? Jesus comes to fill the law full and, at the same time, simplifies it for us. I discuss Jesus turning water into wine as a reminder that something greater than the law walked the Earth. Jesus, in the flesh, provided our example. How are you doing at following Him?

John 2

2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

Hello Fellow travelers! How do we live out the complexity of Jesus, who perfectly displayed the grace and truth of God? What role does kindness play in calling people to repentance? What role is God calling you to participate in? I talk about the story of Zacchaeus, and no, I don't sing the song. But you might hear a bird going crazy outside the window. Hello Fellow Travelers! May is here as we continue in the most wonderful journey of following Jesus. Are you fanatical about anything? Maybe a sports team, a movie series, or a collection of books? Can a good game on Sunday make your week, or a bad game get it off to a bad start? Would you ever dance like a fool for all the world to see? In this week's episode, I ponder the story of David and what it means to be undignified for Jesus. What might God call you to do to make the world and/or your church stop and take notice?

2 Samuel 6:14-23 14 Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.

16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart.

17 They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the Lord. 18 After he had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord Almighty. 19 Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women. And all the people went to their homes.

20 When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!”

21 David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”

Hello Fellow Travelers. Jesus calls out worries and wealth as weeds in our spiritual hearts. As followers of Jesus, we can expect that when we seek to produce the good fruit we are called to produce, our worries and wealth will be stumbling blocks. Worries and wealth are the front lines in the battle of who is in charge of our lives and how dependent we choose to be. Don't get the wrong idea; this isn't a call for everyone to vow poverty. But it is a wake-up call to remember that following Jesus starts with His kingdom - and then all things are added. We build our house on sinking sand, trying to do it any other way.

Hello Fellow Travelers! Continuing with the agricultural theme of April, I will spend the following few podcasts talking about the parable of the sower found in Matthew 13. This week is about the seed that fell on the path. The path is hard ground that is not meant for seeds. Similarly, it is hard for us to hear from God when our hearts are hard. What is the condition of the soil in your heart? What do you do if you find it to be hardened?

Check out my blog: Unbroken Ground - Exploration of Christ, Community, and Creativity (patheos.com)

Matthew 13

The Parable of the Sower13 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:

“Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:

“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[a]

16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”
