Start to Stop Toddler Breastfeeding by Jenna Wolfe is dedicated to supporting moms breastfeeding and weaning their toddlers and preschoolers, and those who are hoping to make it that far and want to set themselves up for success. You wanted to breastfeed for years, not months, but I bet you didn’t expect gymnurstrics, skin crawling with every latch, nipple twiddling, meltdowns, and still having sleepless nights. In this podcast you will find everything you need to extended breastfeed, full-term wean and even tandem feed without losing your mind (or your toddler’s trust). We will also cover nutrition, supporting healthy emotional and social development in your child and so much more. You will find fireside chats with incredible experts like Krista Lockwood of Motherhood Simplified, Samantha Radford of Evidence-Based Mommy and more. You will leave every episode feeling like you have found your people and have a new-found confidence in your breastfeeding and parenting.
If you looking to make some changes in your breastfeeding relationship with your older baby or child, make sure to download the free “Making Changes” communication guide & cheat sheet so that you can say “no” to the feed while saying “yes” to the need.

This week I'm answering a coaching call question from an extended breastfeeding mom:
"My toddler often doesn't accept dad at night when she wakes up crying. I am and have always been the preferred parent. I have just found out about a work trip I need to take which will have me away from my 2-year-old overnight for the first time. Typically, I feed her to sleep and to resettle throughout the night. If I am out of the house for bedtime, she does goes to sleep for other people, but it often takes a lot longer than if I am doing bedtime.
Wondering if you had any tips that might help them both prepare for my work trip over the next few weeks and allow dad to be involved in general?"While there are a lot of things can be done to indirectly support a family in this situation, in this podcast episode, I break down a simple 3 part strategy to support a non-breastfeeding parent & a breastfed toddler for their first night(s) alone together.
Whether you decide to night wean ahead of time or not (and I do explore this a little more in the episode), bolstering and leveraging your child's connection with the person who will be caring for them is key to a relaxing time apart.

SUBMIT YOUR Q FOR ME TO ANSWER IN FUTURE EPISODES
In this week's episode of Start to Stop Toddler Breastfeeding, I'm answering a question I received from a student in Own Your Breastfeeding Story.
"How can I encourage my 2 year old to settle down when he is on the bed with us?
We cosleep and most of the time especially in the morning when he wakes up, after he nurses from me, he immediately goes to wake up our 4 month old, or will start making big movements that will wake her up.
We try to explain to him that when the newborn is sleeping (or anyone) we whisper and we try not to disturb them.
Is this an unrealistic expectation of a toddler? What else can we do? "
This kind of situation comes up in lots of different contexts - and for tandem breastfeeding moms, it can feel particularly loaded.
Breastfeeding is your number one tool, but maybe your toddler isn't interested, or maybe YOU aren't interested. Are you destined to have a horrible day that begins with a stressful morning?
In the episode I share a few different things to consider, and give some practical support:
1 - Check in with YOUR expectations first.
2 - Set your little one up for success by talking about this issue outside of the moment.
3 - Support them to have something else to do.
4 - Playfully engage with them to put them into a receptive state and avoid having to tell them what to do/not to do altogether.

AUDIO FIXED
Breastfeeding a toddler and a newborn... at the same time -> most people in the Western world think this is crazy.
And yet, I breastfed 2 kids (of different ages) for 3.5 years, and I hear from listeners all the time who are either doing it or considering it.
But, just like most things "extended breastfeeding" there aren't many places to find support when you start out on your tandem nursing journey.
In this final part of the Tandem Feeding series I give you all the things I wish I would have known as a first time tandem feeding mom,
I cover:

Finding out you are pregnant is a complex at the best of times.
Having concerns about safety for you and your growing baby, finding your life impacted in ways you never would have expected, and feeling emotions you didn't know were possible (thank you hormones!) are all normal things in pregnancy - but there is an added layer of concern and change when you conceive while you are currently breastfeeding.
It's (unfortunately) common to immediately get advice from friends, family, and even doctors that you must wean for your well-being and the health of your fetus. It's understood that breastfeeding during pregnancy has far more risks and benefits and continuing on is just foolish... or is it?
In this week's podcast episode I bring together some of the lastest research & science around breastfeeding during pregnancy, as well as my own personal experience as a tandem feeding mom, and my professional experience as a toddler breastfeeding coach to give you the best information on:

Have you ever felt the pressure of setting specific breastfeeding goals? I know I have! In the beginning, I felt like I had to have these concrete goals because, let's face it, everyone asks! But guess what? Once you are actually "in it" - things shift and change day-to-day and all of that concrete thinking feels a whole lot more abstract.
In this episode, I share my journey from setting specific goals to embracing a more values-based approach... and the shift I am seeing in those I support.
Join me as I share my insights on the modern dilemma of breastfeeding goals and what it all might mean for you and your toddler.

Welcome to episode three of this Behind the Scenes series!
In this candid conversation, I'm opening up about my mental health journey, embracing the highs and lows of anxiety, and depression, and sharing how it all ties into my experience with nursing aversion.
This episode isn't just about my journey; it's an invitation to explore the intersection of mental health, motherhood - and of course, breastfeeding.
I also dip into the things that have supported me through the most intense periods of emotional and mental struggles in my life and are still supporting me now. My hope is that they offer you support as well.
I do share a few details around the trauma I experienced with my daughter's birth. If you would like to skip that part - jump ahead to 9:56 when I give the warning (at around 7 minutes.)

Ever wonder what life might look like if you were breastfeeding a 4 year old?
Apparently, a lot of you have! Hundreds of you were curious about my current breastfeeding experience. So, I decided to break down what it's like to breastfeed my 4-year-old.
I know it sounds like the title of a click-bait article, but the truth is, the fact that I am still breastfeeding my 4 year old barely enters my mind. It's a normal (and mostly enjoyable) small part of our lives.
Also - I am sharing the toddler planner I use in my home to support ease and calm around breastfeeding and beyond.
(It's literally the exact same one I created for my family, based on tools I have used and optimized for years)

If you have longed for a "me too," or an "I get it" for the times when parenting feels like you are just doing what you can to survive the day - this is the episode for you.
2023 was a crazy ride for me. Launching this podcast was incredible, but a lot was going on behind the scenes - including health struggles for me, which led to a lot of "survival mode parenting".
Over the next month, I'll be sharing shorter, laid-back episodes that explore some of the things that I have experienced personally over my last 6.5 years of breastfeeding - and the last year of utter chaos.
In this first episode of the BTS seried, I share how my own exhaustion and limited capacity have had benefits in my parenting.

The shirt-pulling, screaming, and demands to breastfeed have gotten to the point that you find yourself dreading them before your toddler has even thought about breastfeeding again.
When they do, inevitably "ask" to breastfeed, the fear of reinforcing all of their bad behaviors reverberates through your body as you quickly try to decide if you will hold the boundary; or give in to their demands this time.
...and the guilt that comes from the fact that they "act" so poorly can be crushing. Did you cause this behavior with your bad parenting? Will they end up as disrespectful teenagers? Will the choices you make today define their character as adults?
Man - the pressure that mounts in those moments is crushing!
But what if there is another way?

Breastfeeding & weaning your toddler with confidence and connection isn't impossible. But the reason it feels that way (at least some of the time) isn't your fault.
In today's podcast episode I break down the first of 3 cultural traps that keep you stuck and frustrated on your natural term breastfeeding & toddler weaning journey.
(The other 2 are available in my free instant-access workshop here!)
The trap? The belief/instinct to start by changing your child's behavior first.
What does it look like?
->Deciding it's time to wean
->Shorten feeds/dropping feeds/reading the weaning story books
->...and your child asks to breastfeed more, not less (and at an increasing volume.)
Tune in to learn how to get un-stuck from this trap (and avoid it if you haven't fallen in yet!)

"They swarm me whenever I sit down and will SCREAM until I breastfeed them - and then they are off to play. They never want snuggle without breastfeeding. I feel like all I am is a milk machine." <- Have you ever had these thoughts?
I know I have!
This week I challenge the cultural narrative that we are only milk machines, unpack the ways that this belief impacts our moment-by-moment breastfeeding, and leave you with some practical tips to connect with your child beyond the boob.

Lactation support for newborns is hard enough to come by - but when I decided to focus on toddler breastfeeding there was NO one to look too and say "ah, that's how it's done!"
So, there was (a lot of) trial & error as I worked to create some kind of support that WORKED to help toddler breastfeeding families get unstuck from the loop of boundary burnout and thrive in their breastfeeding & weaning.
In this episode I take you through the different methods I tried, what worked and what didn't, and why - which I hope will help you be able to sort through what support options will work best for you and your family!

Engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis are words all breastfeeding moms are familiar with.
They can be scary & overwhelming, particularly at the beginning of your breastfeeding journey, but can pop up throughout the duration of time that you are breastfeeding - mainly when significant changes are happening in your life, including night weaning & complete weaning.
To further complicate things, there has been a fundamental shift in the way that science and leading lactation organizations and experts understand these conditions - this has resulted in the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine completely overhauling their Mastitis Proctol. This means that the approach both lactating people & those who support them take when addressing engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis has changed, or needs to change.
This is relevant to those who are early in their breastfeeding experience, of course, but it’s ALSO relevant to those who have been breastfeeding for a year or more. You are more likely to be supporting friends & family members when they are encountering these things, and you are more likely to be using methods you were told to use when you face them yourself - but those methods are likely based on an outdated understanding of what engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis are and could be creating MORE issues than they are solving.
In this episode I break down:
-> The big change
-> Each condition in the Mastitis Spectrum of Conditions
-> Support for general treatment & prevention
-> The role stress plays (and what to do about it)

Ever felt drained, tired, and even resentful while going through the demanding process of breastfeeding? Join me as I sit down with Katie, a recent graduate of Own Your Breastfeeding Story, who courageously takes us through her night weaning journey. Katie’s transformation is nothing short of inspiring, especially considering she had recently moved to a new province and got pregnant while she was weaning.
What if I told you that a crucial factor in Katie's parenting transformation was a healthy dose of self-compassion? Yes, that's right. Teeth, and all the issues that come with them, seem to pop up alongside breastfeeding concerns throughout the breastfeeding journey.
It's hard not to worry when these are things you hear day-to-day:
"You'll be ready to wean once they have teeth!"
"You need to stop breastfeeding at night or you will rot their teeth"
"They have teeth now, they are supposed to be eating REAL food!"

Your tongue posture (or your child's!) could be sabotaging all of your attempts at making breastfeeding & weaning an enjoyable experience.
Continuing last week's interview - Jenna and Jenny discuss the importance of orofacial myofunctional therapy for children and adults.
In this partition of the interview, we go over various symptoms that may indicate the need for "tongue physiotherapy" (Aka - Myofunctional therapy!) such as sleep issues, mouth breathing, clenching and grinding, (in adults) and messy eating, picky eating and frequent night waking in kids.
We talk about how your child's quick "clip" of a tongue tie as a newborn might need revisiting and covers the benefits of bodywork and massages to release tension in the facial muscles.

In this episode, we delve into the fascinating world of oral-facial myofunctional therapy with our special guest, Jenny, a registered dental hygienist. Jenny shares her personal journey and how she discovered the transformative effects of this therapy. We explore the core principles of myofunctional therapy and how it can impace so many areas of your life (and your child's) including night waking & challenging daytime behaviours.

A bit about Jenny:
"I am a Registered Dental Hygienist and Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist. I first stepped foot into the dental field back in 2011 graduating St. Clair College in 2014. Over the years I have taken many continuing education courses, leading me to finish my Bachelor of Science - with specialization in dental hygiene, at the University of Detroit Mercy in 2018. I have always been interested in how oral health effects overall health, and have taken many continuing education courses around this area. I have found that there are many people (including myself) with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD) and that people were just dealing with it. This brought me to do some research and asking myself - Why are people just dealing with the symptoms? There has to be negative long-term effects in having OMDs and there has to be a root cause to the OMD.
During the shutdown of March of 2020 due to the global pandemic, I came across the field of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT). This was the first time I have heard of OMT and wondered why I havent heard of it before. Researching more about OMT, I knew I had to get certified, and completed my certification October 2020.
During my studies of OMT I learned how to assess for signs and symptoms of orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) and learned how to treat my own OMDs, realizing the impact it had on my overall health. I am excited to provide the same services to you! Through a comprehensive examination, a therapy program is specifically designed depending on the persons myofunctional disorder and severity to help them start breathing well, sleeping well, and living well.
I also look forward in collaborating with other health care professionals who are interested in learning about OMT and how it can help make a difference in their patients who live with OMDs.
Outside of Dental Hygiene and OMT, you can find me out and about in the community with my husband and daughter, usually taking our two dogs for their walks. I have recently enjoyed learning the art of photography - mainly landscapes. My biggest joy would have to be traveling; Im always looking for a new destinati

"Is it even POSSIBLE to leave your breastfed toddler for an entire night?
And if it is... do you have to wean?"
These are thoughts that go through your mind when you have an invitation show up in the mail for an out-of-town wedding.

Never fear, sweet mama!
In this episode, I cover 5 considerations you need to make before you plan a night away from your breastfed toddler.

"Sensory Overload", feeling ashamed of the condition of your house, constantly trying to "get organized" ... maybe it's just early motherhood, or maybe it's ADHD.
As an LC working with breastfeeding moms from pregnancy through to preschool (and beyond!), I have been a little shocked to see how frequently clients come to me who have ADHD, suspect they have ADHD, or are surprised themselves how many boxes they tick off in a screening questionnaire. There are so many ADHDer's in the "extended" breastfeeding community - but I don't see it being spoken about very much.
As someone who was diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood myself, I knew it was important to open this conversation up in the breastfeeding space, and I knew that Katy Weber would be the perfect person to do it with.
We talk about what the lived experience of an adult woman with ADHD is, different avenues for pursuing a diagnosis, and how to navigate the world once you have one.
A little about Katy:
" Diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 45, I've now made it my mission to help neurodivergent women learn to love their brains!
I've spent the last 7 years coaching women to change their mindset and reframe their self-concept so they can finally recognize and lean into their gifts and abilities.
I'm an author & public speaker, as well as a certified holistic health coach (INHC) and a certified yoga instructor (200 hr RYT). I live in the Hudson Valley, NY, with my husband, two children, our dog, and two cats. Before coaching, I spent 15 years as a newspaper editor & designer. I'm currently pursuing an MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
I'm also the host of the Women & ADHD podcast, ranked among the top 0.5% of all podcasts globally."

Your toddler's boob addiction is actually a GOOD thing - AND there is a really good reason why it drives you nuts.
Your toddler is still waking frequently at night to breastfeed. You can’t leave them with anyone without an epic meltdown. You are embarrassed to take them to the park because of the amount of shirt-pulling that is likely to occur, and it seems everyone around you thinks you should have had this figured out already.
In our culture, all of those things are pretty “strange” for a toddler to be doing.
Because it’s strange, our brains immediately go to “bad”. Psychologically, we want to be like our peers. Practically, the standards we are used to measuring our child against (milestones, growth charts, etc.) are based on averages. “Kids that fall outside of the norm have something wrong with them” is an unconscious belief that is easy to develop.
Your toddler is addicted to your breast, and your only options are tough love or toughing it out. Or so you perceive....
But here is what your unconscious brain misses - it’s not your child with the problem. It’s the culture.
Now, I know that doesn’t seem to leave a lot of hope. You’re thinking: “I can’t change the culture, Jenna. Am I supposed to surrender to this chaos and hope that I survive until my child magically stops being a boob-monster?”
I promise you, there is an alternative to the “tough-love/toughing-it-out” conundrum.
You don’t have to force your child to do anything they aren’t ready for, and you don’t have to wait until they decide they are no longer going to scream “BOOB” as they dig their hands into your bra at your in-law’s thanksgiving table. (No? Just me?)
Despite what others around you might say, your child still being “addicted” to breastfeeding is a good thing.

After breastfeeding for months and years, independent play and sleep can sound like winning the lottery!
Hearing that you are creating "codependency" in your child, and worrying that you have stopped your child from learning other ways to calm themselves down can feel really scary.
But what is really happening? Is it realistic to expect independence? Is your child breastfeeding actually setting them up for failure later in life?
I'll share with you 4 different types of relationships that humans can have and which one you really want to foster in your child.

You are ready to wean your breastfeeding toddler!
...or at least you think you might be ready to wean your breastfeeding toddler?
Maybe toddlerhood is looming and you think you should probably get on the weaning train.
Or, perhaps you have been trying to wean forever and it is just not - WORKING!
Whatever camp you fall into - I got you, mama.
When you Google "gentle toddler weaning from breastfeeding", there will be a lot of pages that come up - it seems that a lot of parenting and health organizations have a page dedicated to it on their websites. And there are even a lot of different parent coaches and breastfeeding experts who also have blog posts talking about gentle toddler weaning.
Here is the problem: they all have the same five or six pieces of advice that are entirely unhelpful.
The worst part is that these pieces of advice are where everyone begins their weaning journey because it's the only advice out there!
