Intro: Easter is one of the greatest times of the year because it is the celebration of the resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ! What we believe about Jesus is that HE LIVES! What a great truth to reflect on each year!
Having just celebrating 18 years as a church, there is no doubt there was a lot to celebrate! We have seen God do abundantly more than we could ask or think! And as the church celebrated by coming together in worship, by gathering in fellowship, by sharing many of the stories of God’s faithfulness, and by looking ahead in faith, there has been so much positive feedback from all who attended. But there is a danger that is lurking in the shadows. Peter tells us that “Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” And without a doubt, when Christians come together to celebrate the goodness of God, Satan is not happy and he will turn up the heat! That’s why Peter also reminds us to “Be sober-minded; be watchful.” It has been said that the greatest danger to a church comes not from outside of its walls, but from within.” Why? Because our enemy will turn faithful Christians against one another! The Bible repeatedly underscores the importance of “oneness” within the body. Jesus’s plan for His church is to be unified in
our faith. If disunity occurs, the church essentially ceases to be the body and becomes nothing more than a disjointed group of individuals. Such behavior is characteristic of unbelievers, not those with the mind of Christ. Therefore, a local church must be aware of the dangers of disunity and fight daily to hold it together! We must recognize that although we are individuals with our own ideas and thoughts, we are called to be one. In this series we will learn what it means to come together in Christian unity and what it will take to continue advancing forward for the glory of God!

Not everyone was happy about Jesus. Not everyone believed in who Jesus was, and it wasn’t for a lack of trying to help them understand. In John 6 Jesus taught that He was the bread of life. This was a truth that the crowds could not wrap their minds around. As we continue to follow Jesus’ ministry we see that people remained divided about who He was. In John chapter 7 we read, “40 When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, “This truly is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some said, “Surely the Messiah doesn’t come from Galilee, does he? (John 7:40-41) In this series we will see that Jesus continues to face opposition. And typical of Jesus, we see that He was not afraid to confront it. In Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus, he talks about us being dead in our sins and that God, being rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ! What a beautiful picture of salvation. Some of us may look at our lives and say we don’t have any influence on others, but we actually do! Every single day, our decision affect others. Sometimes those decisions we make in our lives can point people to Jesus but sometimes they point people away. As believers, and especially influencers who point people to Jesus, we are by no means perfect people, but we do understand our calling, our identity, and our hope for salvation in Jesus Christ!
As Jesus starts the Sermon on the Mount, he begins to lay the foundations of a radical way of living, a counter cultural outlook on life. In the beatitudes, Jesus reminds us that our salvation is not based on how we live or what we do, but instead on God’s grace in our lives. These qualities he lists are not simply good things we should do, but instead are a response to the grace God shows us in salvation. Jesus unpacks how God defines “the good life,” turning our way of living in the world upside down.
Day by day as we all face temptations, we’re facing critical decision points in our lives which may be different from Jesus, but have the same point. They’re not just trying to get us to sin, but they’re trying to lead us and others away from the glorious mission given to each and everyone of us.
