The most dangerous money mistake is also the easiest to make: confusing what looks wealthy with what actually is. We sit down with Chapter 9 of Morgan Housel’s The Psychology of Money and get honest about the gap between being rich today and being wealthy for life. From the quiet power of savings and investment portfolios to the temptation of flashy spending, we talk about why the best financial decisions often happen out of sight.
We dig into the idea of “enough” and why defining it can change everything. A Ferrari might impress people for a moment, but a repayment you can’t afford can trap you for years. We link wealth to freedom, the kind that comes from living below your income, saving consistently, and investing for the future version of you. We also look at real-life cues that mislead us, because we judge what we can see, even when the truth sits in someone’s bank account, not their driveway.
We close with a practical planning mindset: your goals are meant to evolve as you move through different seasons of life. That means checking in often, adjusting as marriage, kids, and new responsibilities arrive, and keeping your money aligned with your values instead of your image. If you want a grounded, South Africa-friendly conversation about personal finance, financial planning, wealth building, and financial freedom, this one is for you. Subscribe, share it with a mate, and leave a review so more people can learn to build wealth they don’t need to prove.

The quickest way to waste money is to spend it on a version of respect that never arrives. We pick up Chapter 8 of Morgan Housel’s The Psychology of Money, “The Man in the Car Paradox”, and use a simple valet parking story to expose a powerful truth about status symbols: when people stare at the Ferrari, they are often not thinking about the driver at all. They are imagining themselves in the driver’s seat.
We explore what that means for personal finance and financial planning in real life. If your spending is built around being seen as successful, you can end up trapped in lifestyle inflation, comparison, and constant upgrading. We talk honestly about the inner pull to look outward for validation, and why getting comfortable with who you are can change everything from your savings rate to your long-term wealth and financial independence.
We also make space for nuance. Big goals are not “bad” goals. If you genuinely love cars, design, performance, or the meaning attached to a lifelong dream, then aiming for something like a Ferrari can be a clear, values-based choice. The difference is whether the purchase is for your life or for an audience. We run through a practical thought experiment: if you had millions to spend, what other version of you might feel prouder putting that money towards investing, family security, debt reduction, or charity?
If this conversation makes you rethink one purchase, one goal, or one assumption about what people think of you, subscribe to Know Your Money, share the episode with a friend, and leave us a review so more listeners can find it.

Freedom is not a luxury item you buy once you hit some magic number. For us, it is the ability to wake up and know you have choices, even when life does not go to plan. We dig into Chapter Seven, “Freedom”, from Morgan Housel’s The Psychology of Money and get honest about why so many people feel trapped despite earning well, and why others have time but not enough money to live with ease.
We talk about the real target: balancing time and money in a way that matches your lifestyle and values. That does not require billions of rands. It requires clarity on what “enough” looks like for you, steady saving, and a plan that can bring forward your options long before traditional retirement age. We also explore the hidden cost of being permanently busy, especially in demanding careers, and why chasing income without time can create problems that money cannot easily fix.
A big part of financial wellbeing is preparing for the “what ifs”. As financial planners, we do not only plan for the version of you who is working and earning today. We look at what happens if you get sick, cannot work, or need to protect your family. We link this to research on happiness that points to one powerful driver: a strong sense of control over your life. Like a farmer cannot control the weather but can prepare for drought or floods, you cannot control every curveball, but you can build resilience through smart protection, savings, and goals.

What do you do when your investment goes down?
Do you panic, make changes and move your money somewhere that feels safer? Or do you trust the plan and stay the course?
In Episode 184 of Know Your Money, Bronwyn and Craig revisit one of their favourite books, The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel, and unpack the chapter “Tails, You Win.”
The idea is simple but powerful: you do not need every investment period, business decision or opportunity to be successful. The wins and losses are part of the same journey. What matters is being able to stay in the game long enough for the wins to make a meaningful difference.
Bronwyn and Craig discuss why investors often want to make changes when markets fall, even after enjoying strong returns in previous years. They compare three investors who approached difficult market periods differently and show how fear, hesitation and trying to predict the perfect time to invest can significantly affect long-term outcomes.
They also explore why every investment needs a clear purpose and timeline.
Money you may need soon should not be invested in the same way as money you are growing for the long term. When you understand what you are keeping, what you are saving and what you are growing, it becomes easier to ride the waves without reacting emotionally to every market movement.
This episode is a reminder that investing successfully is often less about doing something clever and more about continuing to do the right thing when everyone around you is panicking.
Sometimes the best action is patience.
And sometimes, when your long-term money is invested correctly, the best thing you can do is stop looking.

He survives a horrific highway collision, climbs out from under a truck, and walks away with nothing but stitches and a scar. That’s where Justin’s story starts, and it’s why this conversation stays with you long after you stop listening.
We talk with Justin about the night drive from Johannesburg to Howick that turns catastrophic on the N3, and the heavy reality that another family is killed moments later. From there, the story shifts to the uncomfortable question many survivors carry: why didn’t it happen to me? Justin shares how that search for meaning eventually reshapes his career as a biokineticist, moving from chasing high-profile sport to working with people living with brain injuries, stroke, and spinal cord injury in a rehabilitation setting. It’s an honest look at purpose, dignity, and how quickly life can change.
Then we follow the thread into adaptive sport and community impact. Justin tells us about Gabriel, a young man in a wheelchair who demands a goal big enough to live for, and the handcycle challenges that follow. When batteries fail and plans fall apart, a simple tow rope, teamwork, and stubborn grit get people to the finish line. The full-circle moment comes with Wiseman’s 947 ride, where Gabriel tows him for 53km, turning inspiration into action and proving how goals can rebuild identity after trauma.
If you care about purpose-driven work, disability rehabilitation, resilience, and the real-life side of planning for the unexpected, you’ll get a lot from this one. Subscribe to Know Your Money, share this episode with someone who needs hope, and leave us a review with your biggest takeaway.

A rollover on a misty road. Two fatalities. One survivor left with severe brain damage and the brutal reality of starting life again from scratch. We sit down with Justin to tell the story of Ari, a young man who has to relearn how to talk, eat, sit, and walk and why the money side of recovery can be the difference between “getting by” and getting the best possible care.
What makes this story hit hard is how practical it is. We talk about the cost of long-term rehabilitation, the value of having your financial life in order, and how good decisions made years earlier can fund better hospitals, consistent therapy, and even home care. If you have ever wondered what financial planning is really for, this is it: building options when your income, health, and independence are suddenly on the line. We also touch on the quieter pieces people avoid, like support networks, planning ahead, and why a bad attitude can become its own disability.
Then the twist: they set a goal that sounds impossible, the New York Marathon. Training starts with a short driveway and ends with 42 kilometres of grit, including a breaking point on the Queensborough Bridge, a pizza stop, a wheelchair, and a stubborn decision not to quit. Along the way we pull out real takeaways on goal setting, resilience, and breaking overwhelming challenges into small “water points” you can actually reach.

One minute you are training for the next big event, the next you cannot feel your legs. That is the reality behind neurological injury, and it is why we invited Justin into the studio. He is a biokineticist who works daily with people living with brain injuries, strokes, and spinal cord injuries, and he helps run the Trojans Neurological Trust (TNT), a South African charity focused on getting people proper rehab when medical aid is missing or runs out.
We talk through how TNT starts with a small commitment from a practice team and grows into something the public can see and feel at the 947 Cycle Challenge. Chariots, tandems, and the famous “TNT train” are not just a spectacle, they are a moving fundraiser that pays for therapy sessions and keeps hope alive. Justin shares why banter and normal conversation matter in rehab, how community changes outcomes, and why the phrase “the only disability in life is a bad attitude” can be both motivating and complicated.
Then we bring it back to money. We unpack why loss of income cover and the right protection planning can stop a medical crisis turning into a family financial disaster, and how guilt, stress, and conflict often follow when there is no safety net. If you want a grounded conversation about disability, mindset, and financial planning in South Africa, press play, then subscribe, share the episode, and leave a review so more people can find it.

Money advice is everywhere, but the real question is why we still repeat the same money patterns even when we know what to do. We sit down with Natasha Leigh Bray, founder of HeartHealing™, to talk about the emotional root causes behind spending, earning, receiving and staying stuck, and why “money problems” are often just the symptom your life can’t ignore anymore.
Bronwyn shares how HeartHealing™ changed the way she approaches financial planning, from a purely practical process to a more human one that includes psychology, self-worth and the wheel of life. We unpack her framework of seven relationships with money and why your behaviour around saving, keeping, growing or giving is rarely random. It often comes from a place in the heart that wants love, safety, belonging or control.
Natasha brings a striking example from her work with entrepreneurs: a client who couldn’t make money in her business despite trying everything. The breakthrough had nothing to do with pricing or strategy and everything to do with grief, identity and loyalty to a father who struggled in business. Once that relationship healed, she could move forward without losing connection, and her next launch brought in $26,000. We also talk about how a lack of money can keep people in relationships or situations they’ve outgrown, and why financial empowerment starts with believing you are worthy of choice.
If you want a healthier money mindset, better financial decisions and a more grounded relationship with earning and receiving, listen now. Subscribe, share with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

Your bank balance can look like a numbers problem while the real driver sits deeper: the story you learned about yourself. We’re joined by Natasha Leigh Bray, the creator of heart healing, to talk about why so many people do “all the right things” and still feel stuck, unworthy, anxious, or unable to receive. Heart healing works in a deeply relaxed subconscious state, blending scientific, spiritual, and energetic techniques to create rapid transformation by getting to the root of what keeps repeating.
We unpack the five universal heart wounds Natasha sees most often: enoughness, love, worth, trust, and acceptance. These are not only linked to big, obvious trauma. They can start with subtle “little” experiences, like comparison, rejection, broken promises, or not feeling seen, and then get reinforced through adult relationships and workplace dynamics. We talk about how these wounds show up as real symptoms: holding back from promotions, undercharging, people pleasing, fear of abandonment, difficulty trusting yourself, and the urge to sabotage progress right when things improve.
As financial planners, we’re obsessed with practical steps, but we also see the human behind the spreadsheet. That’s why this conversation matters for money mindset, financial planning, and long-term behaviour change. Natasha shares why healing the relationship behind a wound can shift identity, making it easier to receive money and love without pushing either away. If you’ve ever felt like you can have success or connection but not both, this will challenge that belief.

A big money moment can be the start of freedom or the start of a slow slide back to square one. We sit with the central idea from Morgan Housel’s The Psychology of Money: getting wealthy and staying wealthy are two different skills, and most people only practise the first one. A business sale, an inheritance, a market win, or a lucky property deal can create a windfall fast, but without a plan it is easy to pour everything into the next venture and wake up years later with nothing to show for it.
We talk through the “many versions of you” that financial planning needs to protect: the you that earns, the you that retires, the you that may get sick, and the you that faces unexpected curveballs. That’s why we keep coming back to simple wealth management basics like locking away a portion for long-term compounding (think retirement annuity or a disciplined investment strategy), keeping an emergency buffer, and making sure your future self isn’t forced to carry today’s risks.
Our practical framework is the five ways of spending: giving, spending, keeping, saving, and growing. It helps you enjoy life now while still building resilience, funding future opportunities, and protecting what matters. We also share Warren Buffett-style principles for staying wealthy: be careful with debt, don’t panic-sell during recessions, protect your reputation, don’t get stuck on one trend, and avoid relying on other people’s money.
If you found this useful, subscribe, share it with a friend who just had a windfall, and leave a review so more people can learn how to build wealth and keep it.

Compounding can feel like a finance buzzword, but it’s actually a simple idea that can reshape your whole money life: your growth starts earning growth. We sit down and unpack the “confounding and compounding” lesson from Morgan Housel’s The Psychology of Money, using plain language and real numbers that make the concept click. If you’ve ever wondered why your investments look slow at first, or why everyone keeps saying “start early”, this conversation is for you.
We talk about the snowball effect of compound interest and why time is the factor most people underestimate. Warren Buffett comes up as the perfect case study: yes, he’s skilled, but his real advantage is how long he has stayed invested. That leads to a practical takeaway for long-term investing in South Africa: spend time in the market, don’t get shaken out by headlines, and focus on building a system you can stick to through market ups and downs.
Then we get specific. We compare saving R100 a month “under the mattress” versus investing it with long-term market growth, and the gap is staggering. We also explain why escalating your monthly contribution each year matters, how inflation quietly erodes cash, and how fees can reduce your compounding over decades. Finally, we land on the habit that makes all of it easier: set a debit order, automate the escalation, and stop checking quarterly returns like they’re a scoreboard.
If you found this helpful, subscribe, share the episode with a friend who keeps putting off investing, and leave a review so more people can learn how compounding really works.

One of the most dangerous money problems is also the most normal: hitting a goal and immediately needing a bigger one. That “never enough” feeling can look like ambition on the outside, but inside it often brings anxiety, comparison, and decisions you would not normally make. We sit down and unpack Chapter 3 of The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel, using real stories to show how success without contentment can spiral.
We talk about Bernie Madoff as an extreme example of what happens when more is never more, and how the chase can skew your morals and cloud your judgement. From there we shift into a simple but life-changing idea for personal finance and financial planning: define your enough. We explore why goals like becoming a millionaire or building investment wealth are not wrong, but they become hollow if you cannot explain what the money is meant to do for your life.
We also bring in a deeper layer: the enoughness wound. Many of us carry an old belief that we are not good enough or do not have enough, and it can drive overwork, overspending, lifestyle inflation, and constant goalpost-shifting. We share how tools like the Wheel of Life and our Wheel of Wealth help you build a balanced plan across retirement, savings, family time, health, and purpose, so you can “have it all” over time, not all at once. If this resonates, subscribe, share the episode, and leave a review, then tell us: what does “enough” mean to you?

One random event can separate two people’s futures by millions and it can happen with money too. We’re Bronwyn Wayner and Craig Finch from Growth Financial Planning, and we’re back on our bookstall with The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel, focusing on Chapter 2: luck and risk.
We start with the Bill Gates story and the uncomfortable takeaway that timing, access, and chance matter more than most of us want to admit. From there we bring it home to everyday financial planning in South Africa: the career turns that feel like luck, the risks that can pay off, and the risks that can break you if you stake everything on one outcome. We talk about treating setbacks as feedback, keeping perspective when plans change, and why smart people still need a plan that survives bad breaks.
Then we get practical. We unpack why we don’t believe in “only property” thinking, why diversification across asset classes matters, and why your retirement savings should be protected and prioritised from your first pay cheque. We also touch on the Australian superannuation model, and we discuss how the South African two-pot retirement system helps preserve a portion of retirement money for future you while still allowing limited access in extreme situations.

The most frustrating money argument is the one where both people are “right”. We dig into a core idea from Morgan Housel’s The Psychology of Money: no one is crazy, we all make decisions based on the tiny slice of the world we have personally lived through. That slice might be small, but it shapes our spending, saving, investing, and risk choices more than any spreadsheet ever will.
We get practical with real-world financial planning examples. Bronwyn shares a scary medical aid moment that instantly changes how you think about premiums, private healthcare costs, and what “risk” feels like when it is no longer theoretical. Then we move into retirement planning and how one defined benefit story can set a family’s beliefs for decades, whether that story ends in security or disappointment. We also unpack why people judge lotto tickets, and why that judgement often misses the emotional truth behind the purchase.
Along the way we connect the dots to South African saving and investing tools like retirement annuities and tax-free savings accounts, and why these relatively modern vehicles still need time and behaviour change to work. If you want a clearer lens on money psychology, compounding, and building a plan that can handle both luck and bad luck, press play. Markets shout; money grows quietly. We sat down with Tamryn, Head of Retail at Allan Gray, to unpack why investor behaviour often drifts with the news cycle and how to build a plan that outlasts the noise. Using platform data, we explore how starting point bias shapes equity exposure for years: investors who began during strong local markets still hold more equities than those who started after a weak stretch. Even when age and other factors are normalised, the human bias of focusing on what has just happened can continue to keep portfolios off plan.
Then we revisit March 2020. Some investors switched from balanced funds to cash as fear spiked, felt vindicated for a few weeks, and then watched the rebound sprint away before the world felt safe. Getting back in late turned a “defensive” move into the worst outcome versus staying invested. The takeaway is confronting but freeing: action often feels right, yet inaction can be the smarter move when your strategy is sound. You cannot time the turn, but you can own your process.
We also talk age and worldviews. Many younger South Africans have only known a weak rand, local equity underperformance, and steady low inflation, which can harden into belief. Older investors have seen cycles turn, high inflation cool, and markets recover after crises from Black Monday to pandemic panic. The constant through all of it is compounding. A long-run illustration shows how a small, persistent edge plus time dwarfs the index, turning steady decisions into extraordinary outcomes. Start where you are, automate contributions, resist switching, and let time work.
Great performers have coaches; investors should too. A skilled adviser keeps you anchored to goals, rebalances behaviour, and helps you stay in the game when headlines try to push you off court. Markets roared when the headlines said retreat. We open the year by asking smarter questions than “what will 2026 do?” and dig into what last year’s outliers teach us about risk, patience, and building portfolios that don’t wobble every time the news does. With Tamryn Lamb from Allan Gray joining us in studio, we walk through why South African equities and bonds delivered standout returns, how currency moves amplified gains in dollars, and why gold topped leaderboards while Bitcoin slipped. The lesson isn’t to chase what just worked. It’s to separate noise from signal and design an approach that survives uncertainty.
We share our simple keep, save, grow framework to align money with time horizons so each “version of you” is protected and purposeful. Cash covers the near-term you. Diversified, goal-based portfolios serve the medium-term you. Growth assets power your future self decades out. That structure helps you ignore false urgency, rebalance with intent, and capture compounding even when sentiment turns negative. We also examine the outlook for South African assets: where precious metals drove index returns, how foreign buying supported bonds, and why moderating expectations while hunting for value in lagging areas makes sense after a strong run.
Globally, concentrated leadership is meeting reality. Extended US valuations, the rise of markets outside the US, and investor scrutiny of AI spending are nudging a shift from blanket bets to selective ownership. We talk through how to position without prediction—using diversification, valuation discipline, and rule-based reviews to counter bias. If you’re ready to embrace uncertainty, stay invested, and make better decisions across cycles, this conversation will give you practical guardrails and fresh context.

What if the strongest investment edge isn’t a clever model, but a structure built to think in decades? We sit down with Tamryn Lamb, Head of Retail at Allan Gray, to unpack how a private, perpetual ownership model shapes behaviour, protects conviction through tough cycles, and keeps the focus squarely on client outcomes. From the origins of the firm’s valuation-led approach to the practical realities of running a platform that hosts multiple managers, we dig into the details that make investors more resilient and advisers more effective.
Tamryn traces the firm’s journey from its founding visionto pivotal stress tests like the late-90s tech boom, when avoiding fads meant underperformance and painful outflows before recovery. The difference, she explains, was not just philosophy but governance: an ownership structure and long-term orientation that is designed to absorb short-term pressure so investment and business teams can hold the line. We connect that lesson to today’s environment, where this organisational design empowers long-term decisions, improves service consistency, and avoids knee-jerk pivots that hurt clients.
We also explore the ultimate ownership structure of Allan Gray; namely the Allan and Gill Gray Foundation. This entity is the majority owner of the Allan Gray and Orbis asset management businesses, into perpetuity, directing the dividends it receives : to philanthropic purposes across the regions where it operates. It doesn’t soften commercial standards—performance, competition, and client service still drive the work—but it does expand the meaning of success. When clients prosper, communities benefit too. Along the way, we clarify a common misconception about the platform: it’s a single point of administration where clients can hold many managers’ funds, not just Allan Gray’s, giving advisers a simpler, more complete portfolio view.
Education runs through every theme here. Clear explanations, transparent reporting, and honest conversations reduce anxiety and build the trust needed to stay invested when markets are loud. That’s the quiet advantage: informed clients make calmer choices, and calmer choices let compounding do its job. If you care about governance, service, and the human side of investing, this conversation will sharpen how you evaluate managers and platforms alike.

Sleep is quietly rewriting our health stories—and our medical bills. We sat down with Discovery’s head of technical marketing to unpack a striking trend: members are sleeping less and sleeping worse, and the fallout shows up everywhere from diabetes risk to casualty visits to a hefty R230 million paid out for sleep disorders in 2024. That data doesn’t just inform policy—it’s shaping a practical, member-first way to turn better nights into real rewards.
We explore how Discovery is weaving sleep into Personal Health Pathways, standing alongside exercise and healthcare actions as a core pillar of prevention. You’ll hear exactly how the new sleep score works and why it’s different: it blends your duration, quality, and regularity with clinical context to set targets that feel achievable and relevant. Whether you wear an Oura Ring or a Garmin, track with your Apple or Samsung watch, or simply log your night on your phone, the program meets you where you are. Activate sleep tracking with permission in the app, work toward a personalised weekly goal, and unlock rewards every Wednesday—without needing Vitality.
What surprised us most is the power of regularity. A steady bedtime window stabilises circadian rhythms that touch everything from mood and focus to glucose control. When timing, depth, and total hours move in sync, accidents drop, decisions improve, and long-run risks ease. We connect the dots between small, repeatable habits and big health outcomes, showing how better sleep can lower claims and raise quality of life at the same time.
If you’re curious about the science, the incentives, or simply how to start getting paid to protect your bedtime, this one’s for you. Subscribe, share with a friend who needs better sleep, and leave a review telling us your next step—more hours, deeper rest, or a steadier lights-out time?

What if your medical scheme could spot your risks early, guide your next best step, and reward you for taking it? We sit down with Aldu, an actuary from Discovery Health, to unpack Personal Health Pathways — a built‑in DHMS benefit designed to turn preventive care into simple weekly actions with real‑world rewards. No Vitality membership required, no extra cost to activate, just clear guidance via the Discovery Health app or WhatsApp and a smart way to turn healthy habits into Discovery Miles and a usable wallet for care.
We break down the two action streams at the heart of the programme. On the exercise side, you get targets that match your current fitness, from steps to heart‑rate‑based sessions, plus a game board that pays out miles you can spend with Vitality partners. On the healthcare side, it starts with a fully funded wellness assessment to capture blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, BMI, and smoking status. From there, the app suggests practical next steps like a digital mental wellness assessment or nominating your primary care provider, so your care stays coordinated and nothing falls through the cracks.
The conversation goes deep on money matters too. We explain the Personal Health Fund you build by completing actions, how claims are paid in a member‑friendly order, and why funds don’t roll over. You’ll also hear about a thoughtful boost: meet simple engagement criteria — activate Pathways, do your wellness check, enable sleep and exercise tracking — and you start the next year with R1,000 in your Personal Health Fund. It’s a timely kickstart when many of us book checkups in January.

Sleep is not just another health tip; it’s the base that holds our diet, exercise, and mood together. We sit down with Vaughan, Discovery Vitality’s technical marketing lead to unpack why rest now sits at the heart of the programme, what the latest research reveals about global sleep debt, and how small changes in routine can lower real risks like diabetes, obesity, and depression. The conversation moves from science to practice, showing how duration, consistency, and quality work together—and what to do when life or shift work disrupts the ideal.
We share a practical blueprint for better nights: set a one-hour bedtime window, time caffeine wisely, and carve out a two-hour buffer from screens. Then we make it measurable. Vitality’s personalised sleep score blends your age, gender, chronic conditions, and activity to create a fairer 0–100 rating, so two people with similar sleep patterns can still get guidance that fits their context. You’ll learn three easy ways to track: via Apple, Samsung, or Garmin watches; through phone-based estimation; or with the Oura Ring.
Oura takes centre stage with best-in-class sleep tracking, readiness insights, a week-long battery, and a smooth path to get started in South Africa, including a home sizing kit. We explain funding options through Vitality goals or a straight discount, plus how consistent, high-quality sleep can now earn points—another route to that coveted diamond status. By the end, you’ll have a clear plan to improve sleep and a set of tools that turn rest into results.

What if your weekly routine could fund your favourite devices and turn better sleep into real-world rewards? We sat down with Vaughan to unpack Vitality’s 2026 refresh and how it changes the game for anyone chasing health, status, and sustainable habits. The conversation zeroes in on three pillars: easier access to activities and devices, sleep as a foundational behaviour, and smarter ways to stack points without adding complexity.
We start with access. Demand for yoga and Pilates has surged, so Vitality added around 50 more studios and enabled class bookings at Virgin Active through the platform. Check-ins are seamless: book a class, scan a QR code, and collect 100 points. That simplicity nudges consistency and opens doors to a variety of workouts, from boxing and HIIT to mindful movement. On the device side, Garmin joins Apple in the fully funded model, letting you meet weekly goals to cover the cost over time or opt for up to 25% upfront discount. Footwear discounts at Sportsmans and Totalsports remain a practical boost for runners, walkers, and even golfers.
Then we place sleep where it belongs: at the base of health. Vitality Sleep Rewards sets a weekly sleep goal built from nightly scores, with Discovery Miles or instant treats like coffee when you hit the mark. There’s no penalty if you miss, only missed upside, which keeps motivation clean. To power accurate insights, Vitality partners exclusively with Oura. Members can fully fund an Oura ring through consistent sleep goals or take a 25% upfront discount, turning recovery into a measurable, rewarding habit.
Points get a thoughtful upgrade too. You can earn up to 500 points per month for quality sleep. Cardio fitness steps out as its own category, allowing 10,000 cardio fitness points plus 25,000 from fitness events, lifting the total available fitness points to 35,000. It’s a design that rewards both daily effort and long-term aerobic capacity, while aligning with how behaviours reinforce each other: train well, sleep better, eat smarter, repeat.

Think Vitality is just cheaper gym and flights? We sat down with Vaughan from Discovery Vitality’s technical team to pull back the curtain on how the programme really works—and how you can turn health data into everyday rewards that actually move the needle.
We start with the foundation: know your health. An annual health check and the Vitality Age assessment give you a clear baseline for blood pressure, BMI, glucose, and cholesterol. From there, the programme shifts from vague goals to concrete actions, rewarding behaviour that supports better outcomes. A key update many people miss: higher healthy food savings at Woolworths and Checkers are unlocked by completing those assessments, not by chasing status. That means real money back on groceries when you commit to the basics.
We also dig into practical setup and strategy. Inside the Discovery app, you can confirm your rewards, check what’s linked, and choose a primary in-store partner and a primary online partner to maximise 25% back across both shopping channels. Prefer Woolies in-store and Checkers Sixty60 online? Structure it that way and keep more in your pocket. Beyond carts and tills, we explore the full fitness ecosystem: traditional gyms, heart rate-based workouts, Team Vitality events, the Fitness Network, and even the surge in padel. Sleep now stands alongside nutrition and movement as a formal pillar, recognising how recovery drives performance, weight control, and long-term health.
For those chasing points with purpose, the heart rate workout tiers are still active, and the Vitality Points Guide remains your go-to for thresholds and caps. Our takeaway is simple and powerful: measure what matters, then make the next good choice easier with rewards that show up today while you build a healthier future. If you’re ready to turn Vitality into a clear plan—more savings, less guesswork, better habits—this conversation gives you the map.

Prices go up, needs don’t pause. We open with why Discovery Health deferred contribution increases from January to April, putting relief back into members’ budgets, and then get straight into what families care about most: affordable everyday care without nasty surprises. Aldu from Discovery Health Medical Scheme joins us to unpack the Smart Saver Series, a new plan range built for young families who visit GPs, dentists, and optometrists more than they visit specialists, and who want predictable costs when life happens.
We break down the two options—Essential Smart Saver and Classic Smart Saver—so you can see exactly where they differ. Essential funds in-hospital specialists at 100% of the Discovery Health Rate, while Classic goes up to 200%, a key edge if you want more specialist latitude. Both plans use the Smart Hospital and Smart GP networks for elective care, with emergency access at any facility. The real win is day-to-day value: network GP visits with low fixed copays (R75 on Classic, R130 on Essential) and unlimited access, plus one annual dental and optometry check per beneficiary at those same small copays. Add an OTC allowance, risk-funded scripts on Classic, and you’ve got routine costs under control.
We also spotlight features that speak directly to modern family life. A built-in contraceptive benefit supports proactive health and budgeting. A kids’ injury benefit reduces the stress of a casualty visit with a low copay and freedom to use the nearest hospital. Then there’s the savings waterfall: risk-funded benefits first, the Personal Health Fund tied to health engagement next, and finally your Medical Savings Account, which carries over year to year. That structure protects your pocket for those less frequent but pricier needs like ENT, gynae, or orthopaedic consults, while still letting you use savings for any provider when you choose.
If you’re weighing a plan change before April or trying to balance cost with real-world use, this walkthrough gives you clear, practical guidance to decide. Subscribe for more money-smart health cover insights, share this with a friend who’s comparing options, and leave a review to tell us which Smart Saver feature matters most to you.

Feeling crushed by bills and constant calls from creditors? We sit down with Chantelle, a seasoned debt counsellor, to map a clear path from panic to plan. She explains how debt review can pause the noise, replace many chaotic payments with one structured instalment, and offer legal protection so you can run your home without fear. We dig into the mechanics: negotiating lower interest rates, adjusting terms without hiding costs, and making sure a court-approved budget leaves room for essentials like food, transport, and school needs.
We’re candid about the trade-offs. Under debt review, you cannot take on new credit—an intentional reset that pushes you to live on cash and rebuild healthy habits. Chantelle breaks the myth that you can choose which accounts go in; it’s all or nothing to seal the leaks and end the cycle. We also talk timelines: while some terms extend, consistent payments and reduced interest can still shorten your overall journey compared to revolving debt that never ends.
Not everyone needs formal counselling, and that honesty matters. Chantelle often helps people spot simpler moves: cutting unused subscriptions, downgrading cover, renegotiating a stubborn store card, or stretching a term with a creditor. The initial assessment is free, and fees only apply if you proceed with review, built into your monthly instalment. If you’re overwhelmed, start by gathering every statement, listing debit orders, and being frank about real household costs. From there, a plan emerges—steady, practical, and free of shame.
We close with encouragement and next steps for South Africans searching for debt relief, credit repair, and financial stability. Subscribe for more conversations that turn money stress into clear actions, and share this episode with someone who needs a lifeline today. Feeling cornered by debt even though you’re working hard? We sit down with Chantelle from S&S Debt Counseling to unpack a proven, legal way to reset your repayments under South Africa’s National Credit Act. Together we walk through how debt counselling protects you from aggressive collections, restructures instalments to what you can truly afford, and builds a simple single payment that actually shrinks balances.
We start with the real reasons people become over indebted: overtime cuts, job changes, and rising living costs that push budgets past breaking point. Chantelle explains the first signs creditors see, the Section 86 notice, and why acting within days can pause legal action. From there, we map the full assessment of your household budget, show how negotiators reduce instalments and often interest, and explain how a court order locks in the plan so banks must cooperate.
The conversation gets practical. You’ll hear a clear example of turning a R10,000 surplus into a structured repayment that covers all accounts. We unpack why the snowball method frees you faster by closing small debts first and rolling those payments forward. We also dive into behavioural shifts: no new credit while under review, cutting up cards to end the swipe cycle, and using a semi-cash system to rebuild control. With regulated Payment Distribution Agencies handling money flows and transparent statements for you and creditors, the process stays clean and accountable. We close with alternatives like bank rearrangements, the risks they carry, and why legal protection often makes the difference between constant stress and steady progress.
If debt has you feeling stuck, this conversation offers a map, a shield, and a plan. Subscribe, share with someone who needs hope, and leave a quick review telling us the one question you still have about debt review so we can answer it next time.

What happens when a business partnership faces an unexpected crisis? Much like a marriage contract that's never reviewed until divorce looms, poorly structured business agreements can lead to catastrophic financial consequences when partners die or become disabled.
Sean from BrightRock delivers powerful insights into business assurance solutions that truly protect what entrepreneurs build. He highlights how traditional insurance approaches often miss the mark by charging business owners for lifetime coverage when their needs may be temporary. Through BrightRock's needs-matched approach, businesses can secure precisely the protection required for contingent liabilities, buy-and-sell agreements, and key person insurance—without paying for unnecessary coverage.
The podcast reveals game-changing features like underwriting in bands of R10 million, allowing growing businesses to access significant additional coverage without further medical underwriting. This proves invaluable as businesses expand and owners develop health conditions that might otherwise make new coverage impossible to obtain. Sean emphasizes that premiums themselves become assets that can be repurposed when original needs expire, embodying BrightRock's three pillars of efficiency, flexibility, and certainty.
Perhaps most importantly, Sean warns against the dangers of generic online agreements, sharing a personal divorce story that underscores why proper legal documentation matters. "Spend money on getting this right," he advises, explaining how BrightRock partners with specialised attorneys to ensure comprehensive protection. In today's world of information overload, qualified financial advisors become increasingly valuable navigators through complex business protection decisions. The episode serves as a crucial reminder that successful entrepreneurs must look beyond immediate concerns to establish proper safeguards for their business futures.

What happens to your children's education if you're no longer able to provide for them? Sean Hanlon, Executive Director of BrightRock, returns to Know Your Money to tackle this critical question with hosts Bronwyn Waner and Craig Finch.
The conversation delves into BrightRock's unique Child Care Benefit, challenging conventional thinking about educational protection. Rather than offering a traditional lump sum payment that statistics show disappears within just 36 months on average, BrightRock provides an annuitized income that continues until a child reaches age 24. What makes this approach revolutionary is that it's not contingent on school attendance, allowing families flexibility if circumstances change after a parent's death or disability.
Hanlon shares personal insights as a father of four, explaining how he structured his own family's protection through a trust that owns his policy. This arrangement ensures each child receives a guaranteed monthly amount with specific conditions attached. The benefit also addresses the reality of educational inflation, with some private schools increasing fees by approximately 12.5% annually – far outpacing standard inflation indexes.
At its core, the Child Care Benefit represents a philosophical shift in how we think about protecting our children's futures. As Hanlon poignantly observes, "What does money really give you? It gives you choice." By focusing on preserving choices rather than simply covering educational expenses, BrightRock's approach offers a more comprehensive safety net for families facing life's uncertainties.

What if your money plan was designed for every version of you, not just the one paying bills today? We take a practical, human look at life’s moving parts—student, first job, partner, parent, homeowner, and future retiree—and map out how to fund each stage without feeling overwhelmed. The goal isn’t a perfect spreadsheet; it’s a calm system that protects your income, supports your people, and builds the freedom to choose work you love.
We start with foundations that unlock resilience: income protection as the engine of your plan, medical aid you can actually use, and an early retirement contribution that leverages compounding for decades. From there, we add bricks as life expands—choosing the right marital property regime before the wedding day, setting life cover to match real obligations, and planning for children’s education without starving your own future. Along the way we tackle the hard but necessary steps people avoid, like drafting a valid will, updating beneficiaries, and preparing for illness or loss so a single blow doesn’t derail years of progress.
Retirement gets a reframing too. Instead of waiting for a date on a calendar, we aim for financial independence, where invested assets can fund your life well before 65. That means capturing salary increases into savings, taming lifestyle creep, and building buffers that turn surprises into detours, not disasters. You’ll hear how to balance living well now with protecting the next version of you, and why a seasoned planner can speed up every transition you’ll face for the first time.

Ever feel like more than one voice is making your money choices? We dive into a simple but powerful idea: your financial life is shaped by internal parts—the spender who wants joy, the saver who wants safety, the earner who chases security, and specialised roles like the workhorse that ties worth to output or the proud one that resists help. By naming these voices and giving each a role, you turn inner conflict into a practical plan.
We unpack how the flourish blueprint maps these parts to a wheel of wealth so every rand has a purpose. You’ll hear how a dominant workhorse can lead to burnout and lopsided plans, and why the proud part can push people to blow windfalls because receiving feels uncomfortable. We share a windfall protocol for bonuses, inheritances, and unexpected gains that channels money into long-term investments, near-term goals, security buffers, and guilt-free fun. You’ll learn how a tiny “joy budget” prevents blowouts, why automation protects your future self, and how boundaries at work help the earner without sacrificing family.
To find your default script, we ask one revealing question: what is your first money memory? Whether your early imprint was spending, saving, or earning, that story still guides your wallet today. We show how to balance all three so you enjoy life now, protect tomorrow, and earn with purpose. The goal is not to silence any voice but to create a steady rhythm where each part speaks and is heard. If you’re ready to turn money stress into a clear plan that fits your whole life, you’ll leave with steps you can use today.
If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who’s navigating a bonus or windfall, and leave a review with your first money memory—we’d love to hear which voice is loudest for you.

Ever feel like life keeps bumping along on a jagged wheel—good career, shaky health, no time for friends, and money always tight? We unpack a practical way to smooth the ride by pairing the Wheel of Life with the Wheel of Wealth, showing how small, planned moves can unlock time, reduce stress, and fund what matters most. Instead of chasing motivation, we map honest scores across career, health, fitness, fun, community, family, friends, love, and learning, then turn those insights into non‑negotiable diary “rocks” that actually happen.
From there, we zoom into money as seven relationships: receiving income from assets, active vs passive earning, conscious spending, saving for named goals, giving with intention, and steady growth through learning. You’ll hear how active earning often blocks rest and recreation, why passive income and side projects can create breathing space, and how to direct cash toward priorities like a weekly date night or a basic gym plan without derailing the budget. The guiding principle is simple and liberating: every rand needs a plan. When each rand has a job, impulse fades, goals get funded, and your calendar reflects your values.
We keep it practical with examples you can copy this week: set three immovable health sessions, budget a modest monthly braai to nurture friendships, allocate a course fee and study hour to boost earning power, and start a small “fun and recreation” pot so joy isn’t an afterthought. The goal isn’t a perfect circle; it’s a wheel smooth enough to roll. Money plans usually break where emotions begin. We take you inside the Flourish Blueprint, a behaviour-first approach that starts with who you are, then builds systems that hold under stress, and only after that chooses the products and portfolios to carry your goals. Bronwyn Waner and Craig Finch share hard-won lessons from years of planning: why clients panic when markets dip, how generous people can set boundaries without losing heart, and what it takes to design a plan that funds every version of you — present, near-future, and retired.
We walk through the seven steps, from mapping the Wheel of Life to reveal true priorities, to applying the Wheel of Wealth to spending, saving, giving and protection. You’ll hear how a coach-style relationship spots blind spots — the “weak backhand” — and turns them into strengths with practical habits. We make the case for automation as your strongest ally, routing rands to emergency buffers, retirement, and goal funds before lifestyle spending even starts. Then we dig into providers and wrappers, why regulated platforms and tax-efficient vehicles matter, and how poor wrapper choices can cost you in taxes and estate complexity.
Finally, we connect time horizons to asset allocation in simple, usable terms. Long-term goals need equity exposure across local and global markets; short-term needs stay in cash-like assets to avoid painful timing risk. Most advisers start here and lose clients at the first scare; we start with behaviour so the allocation sticks. By the end, you’ll have a clear picture of how to calm fear, set sustainable giving boundaries, and build a plan that compounds quietly while you live your life.
If this resonates, subscribe and share with someone who needs a calmer path to growth. Leave a review with one insight you’re going to act on this week — what will you automate first?

The scoreboard says “fun,” but the numbers tell a different story. We dig into the surge of online gambling in South Africa—how seamless phone betting, constant sports ads, and a culture of “one more chance” are reshaping family budgets, draining community spend, and pushing people into risky debt. Drawing on recent retail data, industry quotes, and firsthand stories, we unpack why the house always wins and what that means for anyone trying to build savings, pay school fees, or simply keep the fridge full.
We talk through the mechanics that make mobile betting so dangerous: anonymity that hides the problem, rapid-fire micro-bets that blur cost, and platforms designed to keep you engaged. Then we zoom out to the wider economy, where money that once circulated through local shops now flows to platforms—many with profits that don’t cycle back into South African communities. The jump from R10bn to R150bn in online betting over five years isn’t a headline; it’s a warning light for households and the country.
This conversation gets practical fast. We share step-by-step ways to add friction—deleting apps, blocking merchants, using bank tools for alerts, and automating essentials on payday so temptation meets an empty runway. We offer a path for recovery that respects the realities of addiction: tell one trusted person, seek professional support, and rebuild a spending order that protects food, housing, and transport before anything else. We also challenge platforms and regulators to introduce guardrails that reduce harm without waiting for crises to stack up.
If you’re wrestling with betting—or worried about someone you love—there’s a way forward that puts structure, support, and sanity back into your money. Ready to stop ending the year exhausted and wondering where your leave went? We share a simple, repeatable planning system that starts with joy: put holidays in the diary first, then design work around the life you actually want. From stretching 15 days of leave into memory-rich long weekends, to turning a big dream like a family Disney trip into a two-year, fully funded goal, we unpack the habits that make rest inevitable rather than hypothetical.
We walk through practical tactics for affordable travel in South Africa: choosing bush, berg, or sea based on season, going self-catering or camping to cut costs, and keeping long weekends within a three-hour drive to avoid fatigue and fuel burn. You’ll hear how we use a dedicated holiday account, funded monthly, to remove the “we can’t afford it” barrier, and why your first year might mean fewer days off while you build the fund. We also talk about the strange magic of intentionality—how invitations and opportunities appear once your dates are set and you’re ready to say yes.
Life design doesn’t stop at travel. After locking in rest, we add work targets, weekly rhythms, and the essentials from the wheel of life: health, relationships, finances, and growth. Small systems hold it all together—a family wall calendar to avoid clashes, a quarterly check-in to reset priorities, and a budget bucket for school-holiday extras so cash flow stays calm. Whether you’re planning a local braai weekend or saving for a bucket-list holiday, this approach helps you create a year you recognise and remember.

What happens to your life insurance when you retire? Most people face a difficult choice between continuing to pay steep premiums or abandoning coverage they've funded for decades. Sean Hanlon, Executive Director at Bright Rock, reveals a game-changing alternative.
The premium settlement option stands out as Bright Rock's signature offering. Unlike competitors who limit this benefit to age 65, Bright Rock allows clients to activate it from age 55, provided they've paid premiums for 15 years. This means you can stop paying premiums while your coverage remains intact—a crucial advantage when pension funding becomes your priority and rising insurance costs become burdensome.
Beyond this cornerstone feature, Hanlon unpacks several innovative benefits that redefine traditional insurance approaches. The pre-funded funding pattern allows clients (particularly business owners and farmers) to pay slightly higher premiums initially while enjoying level payments and 4% annual coverage growth. This creates predictable cash flow and significant long-term savings—millions of rands over a lifetime.
Perhaps most revolutionary is Bright Rock's underwriting approach. When you take out a policy, you're underwritten in bands of R10 million, giving you access to additional coverage without further medical underwriting. This proves invaluable when circumstances change, such as when business opportunities require increased loan facilities, and your health might have changed. Even more remarkable, the "change moment payout" feature provides income for 10 years after retirement, functioning as a pension booster that pays out even if you've previously claimed on your income protection policy.
Whether you're planning for retirement, structuring business insurance, or ensuring fair inheritance between children with different career paths, these features offer unprecedented flexibility. Listen now to discover how these innovations might transform your financial planning approach. Have you considered how your insurance needs will change in retirement?

What if your life insurance actually understood your changing needs over time? Sean Hanlon, Executive Director at BrightRock, returns to challenge everything you thought you knew about protecting your financial future.
Most insurance companies sell you a "chunk of life cover" without truly understanding your needs. Sean reveals why income protection—your ability to earn until retirement—is actually your family's most valuable asset yet remains grossly undersold in South Africa. BrightRock's revolutionary approach splits protection into categories that reflect real life: household expenses, childcare costs, and healthcare expenses, each inflating at different rates.
Through a powerful real-world example, Sean shares how a 40-year-old doctor diagnosed with stage four cancer was able to capitalize 25 years of future income rather than receiving monthly payments until his death four years later. This claim-stage flexibility represents a fundamental shift in how insurance can work when you need it most.
Perhaps most revolutionary is BrightRock's concept of your premium as an asset. Unlike traditional policies where premiums simply disappear when coverage ends, BrightRock allows you to convert that premium value to other forms of coverage as your needs change—without medical underwriting. This becomes increasingly valuable as you age and developing health conditions might otherwise make obtaining new coverage impossible.
Sean challenges listeners with a sobering reality check: if you earn R1 million annually with 25 working years ahead, you need R25 million in life cover to truly replace that income—not the R5 million many might have. Are you actually worth more dead than alive, or are you severely underinsured? Listen now to discover how needs-matched insurance can transform your financial protection.

Sean Hanlon, the visionary founder of BrightRock, takes us on a journey through the transformation of life insurance in South Africa. Drawing from 36 years of industry experience, Sean reveals how questioning traditional approaches led him to create a revolutionary product that matches coverage precisely to each client's unique needs.
The conversation delves into BrightRock's three-pillar philosophy that has disrupted the insurance landscape. First, efficiency—designing coverage that aligns with specific time-bound needs rather than forcing clients into whole-of-life solutions. Second, flexibility—allowing premiums to be reallocated as life circumstances change, like transferring childcare coverage to estate planning when children become independent. Third, certainty—providing predictable premium increases at fixed percentages, eliminating the guesswork that plagues traditional policies.
Sean candidly shares the challenging experience BrightRock endured during COVID-19, when they paid out 1.48 billion Rand in claims over 24 months—exceeding their entire previous decade of payouts combined. This unprecedented challenge tested their business model but ultimately validated their approach to risk assessment. The discussion also highlights BrightRock's client-centered innovations, like paying dread disease claims upon diagnosis rather than waiting for end-stage symptoms, and how their partnership with Sanlam has provided stability while preserving their unique market position.
For anyone interested in understanding how financial products can truly serve individual needs rather than forcing customers into standardized solutions, this conversation offers valuable insights into creating insurance coverage "as unique as your fingerprint." Retirement planning in South Africa has undergone dramatic shifts over the decades, and understanding these changes could be crucial to your financial security. Our conversation with Clive Lazar from Just Retirement reveals fascinating insights into how South Africans' retirement preferences have evolved from predominantly life annuities before 2000 to overwhelmingly favoring living annuities by 2020.
What's particularly eye-opening is how global events reshape our financial decisions. The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a significant shift back toward guaranteed income solutions, with many retirees suddenly prioritizing certainty over potential growth. Lazar explains how high bond yields during this period created particularly attractive annuity rates, allowing retirees to lock in generous guaranteed income for life. As markets have since stabilized, we're witnessing yet another pendulum swing in preferences.
Perhaps most valuable for listeners considering retirement options is the discussion around blended annuity solutions. Rather than choosing between a living annuity (with its flexibility and growth potential but sustainability risks) or a life annuity (with guaranteed lifetime income but less flexibility), you can now combine both approaches on platforms like Allan Gray. This innovative strategy allows you to secure essential monthly expenses with guaranteed income while maintaining investment control over the remainder of your retirement capital. The alarming revelation that roughly two-thirds of living annuity holders analyzed fall into "risky" or "danger" withdrawal zones underscores why this blended approach deserves serious consideration. Whether you're approaching retirement or already managing your retirement income, this episode offers crucial perspectives on creating a sustainable financial future that balances certainty with opportunity.
Ready to rethink your retirement income strategy? Connect with a qualified financial planner who can help you determine if a traditional, living, or blended annuity solution best suits your unique circumstances.

What if your health challenges could actually boost your retirement income? That's the revolutionary concept explored in our fascinating conversation with Clive Lazar, regional manager for Just Retirement in Johannesburg.
Most South Africans don't realize that traditional retirement annuities create what the industry calls "cross-subsidization" - where people with shorter life expectancies essentially subsidize those who live longer. It's a system that unfairly benefits the healthy at the expense of those with medical conditions. Just Retirement has turned this model on its head through their unique underwriting approach that examines your personal health factors like smoking history, medical conditions, and occupational hazards.
Unlike life insurance underwriting that penalises health conditions with higher premiums, Just Retirement has enhanced annuities reward those same conditions with higher starting incomes - sometimes 15-25% higher than standard rates. About 30% of their policyholders receive some form of income enhancement, giving them more monthly income from the same retirement capital. This approach ensures fairness by matching retirement benefits to individual circumstances rather than using one-size-fits-all calculations.
We also tackle common concerns about life annuities, including the fear of losing your capital if you die early. Clive explains how guaranteed term options protect your investment by ensuring payments continue to your beneficiaries for a specified period, even if you pass away. Whether you're planning your retirement or advising clients, this conversation highlights innovative solutions that could significantly improve retirement outcomes for those with health challenges.
Curious how your health profile might actually benefit your retirement planning? Listen now to discover if you could qualify for enhanced retirement income that traditional providers might not offer.

Retirement income planning can be daunting, especially when considering how to make your money last as long as you do. This illuminating conversation with Clive Lazar, Regional Manager at Just Retirement, demystifies life annuities and showcases an innovative approach to guaranteed lifetime income.
Just Retirement brings something unique to the South African insurance market. Backed by the UK-listed Just Group (a FTSE top 200 company), they've operated locally for over a decade with an impressive international 'A' credit rating—higher than any local insurer. This financial strength provides essential security for retirees entrusting their capital to receive lifetime income.
What truly distinguishes Just Retirement's approach is their enhanced underwriting process. While all insurers consider standard factors like age, gender, and fund size when calculating annuity rates, Just Retirement goes further by incorporating socioeconomic factors and, uniquely among South African insurers, detailed health and lifestyle assessments. This personalized approach can result in more favorable rates for many retirees, particularly those with health conditions that might reduce life expectancy.
The tax advantages of life annuities are substantial, especially when purchased with discretionary money. Approximately 60-65% of income from fixed-escalation annuities is tax-free, while annuities with variable increases (like inflation-linked or with-profit options) can offer up to 90% tax-free income. These benefits make life annuities worth considering for anyone looking to create efficient, guaranteed income streams in retirement.
Whether you're approaching retirement or simply planning ahead, understanding these specialized financial products could significantly impact your long-term financial security. Navigating South Africa's tax landscape can be a minefield of confusion and potential penalties. In this enlightening conversation with tax expert Sue from Anthurico Accountants, we unravel the often misunderstood difference between PAYE and provisional tax.
Sue breaks down how PAYE operates as the standard tax system for employed individuals, with employers legally required to deduct tax monthly from salaries exceeding R5,500. Meanwhile, provisional tax works on a biannual payment schedule for companies and individuals with multiple income streams such as rental properties, investments, or business profits.
The conversation takes a crucial turn when Sue reveals the hidden pitfalls of provisional tax: the strict payment deadlines that trigger an immediate 10% penalty if missed by even a day, and the infamous "80% rule" that could cost taxpayers an additional 18% interest if they underestimate their tax liability. These insights are gold for anyone juggling multiple income sources or running their own business.
What makes this episode particularly valuable is the practical advice for simplifying your tax obligations. Should you ask your employer to increase PAYE deductions to cover additional income? Is it possible to deregister as a provisional taxpayer? Sue addresses these questions with straightforward guidance that cuts through the complexity.
Whether you're an employee with side investments, a property owner collecting rental income, or a business owner deciding how to structure your personal remuneration, this episode equips you with the knowledge to make smarter financial decisions and avoid unnecessary penalties. Give it a listen – your wallet will thank you come tax season!

Drawing the line between personal and business finances isn't just good practice—it's essential for tax compliance and business survival. Sue from Anthurico Accountants joins us to tackle one of the most common pitfalls entrepreneurs face: treating their business as an extension of themselves.
"When you register a company, you get a registration number. You have an ID number. They're two individual people," Sue explains, setting the foundation for our conversation. This distinction isn't merely philosophical—it has real tax implications when business owners use company accounts for personal expenses like groceries, bond payments, or school fees. These seemingly innocent transactions create loan accounts that SARS eventually flags, leading to unexpected tax liabilities and penalties.
We unpack the mechanics of loan accounts, VAT registration requirements, and the often-misunderstood question of whether dividends or salaries provide more tax efficiency. Sue delivers a masterclass in practical business finance, offering a simple test for any expense: "Could I justify that it's in the production of income?" This golden rule can save business owners from costly mistakes and tax complications.
The conversation takes a deeper dive into VAT registration thresholds, the importance of setting aside VAT collections, and the potential consequences of non-compliance. With SARS becoming "stickier and stickier" about enforcement, proper accounting guidance has never been more important. As Sue aptly puts it, "No tennis player is really good unless they have a coach"—the same applies to business finances.
Whether you're starting your entrepreneurial journey or already managing an established company, this episode provides essential knowledge to keep your business finances clean, compliant, and clearly separated from your personal affairs. Your future self (and your accountant) will thank you.

Navigating tax season doesn't have to be intimidating. In this enlightening conversation with Sue from Anthurico Accountants, we demystify the increasingly automated South African tax system and equip you with practical knowledge to confidently manage your tax obligations.
Sue breaks down the SARS' auto-assessment system, explaining how it automatically compiles third-party information from employers, banks, medical aids, and retirement annuity providers to simplify filing for those with straightforward financial situations. We explore who benefits from this system and importantly, who should still file manually – particularly those with rental income, commission earnings, car allowances, or investment returns. The message is clear: while auto-assessments offer convenience, verifying their accuracy remains your responsibility.
The conversation takes an interesting turn when we discuss property transactions, now firmly in SARS' spotlight through title deed tracking. Learn the crucial distinction between primary residences (which benefit from a R2 million exemption on capital gains) and investment properties (which receive no such exemption). We also venture into the complex territory of family financial transfers, unpacking the R100,000 annual tax-free donation limit, the unlimited spousal donation benefit, and the strict requirements for family loans to avoid being reclassified as donations. Throughout, Sue emphasises the importance of proper documentation and transparency – your best allies in navigating South Africa's tax landscape with confidence.
Have questions about your unique tax situation? This episode provides the foundation you need to make informed decisions this tax season.

What happens when traditional insurance systems fail those who need protection most? Melody from Bidvest joins us to explore their groundbreaking event-based cover - a revolutionary approach providing income protection to previously uninsurable South Africans.
The journey began in 2015 when Bidvest identified approximately 250 occupations systematically denied income protection. Whether due to high occupational risk (like professional athletes) or sensitivity to claims (like performers whose careers can be derailed by minor health issues), these individuals were left vulnerable without adequate financial protection. Believing every hardworking South African deserves income security, Bidvest created a solution based on 209 specific claimable events rather than traditional disability definitions.
The beauty of event-based cover lies in its flexibility. A homemaker, whose financial value to a family can reach R50,000 monthly, qualifies for all 209 events with coverage linked to the breadwinner's income. Meanwhile, a rugby player might access 138 events with alternative pathways for excluded injuries - as demonstrated by a Stormers player who received 129 days of benefits after ACL surgery despite specific exclusions. Most remarkably, Bidvest has extended this protection to those with variable incomes from multiple sources and even individuals with bipolar mood disorder who face universal rejection elsewhere in the industry.
This episode reveals how innovative thinking can transform financial protection for South Africans who've fallen through traditional insurance cracks. Whether you're in a high-risk profession, have an unpredictable income stream, or manage a health condition that's previously left you uninsurable, Bidvest's event-based cover might be the solution you've been seeking. Listen now to discover if you qualify for this game-changing approach to income protection.

Death, taxes, and financial uncertainty—the three inevitabilities that haunt estate planning. But what if there was a way to provide genuine financial stability for your loved ones after you're gone?
Melody from Bidvest Life joins Bronwyn and Craig to explore an often-overlooked alternative to traditional lump sum life insurance: life income benefits. While over 70% of South Africans still choose lump sum payouts, this episode reveals why that might not always be the wisest choice for your beneficiaries.
We've all heard the stories—lottery winners who lose everything, inheritances squandered during emotional times. The "lotto effect" is real, and even financial professionals aren't immune to making poor decisions with windfall money. Life income benefits counter this by providing regular monthly payments for a specified period, allowing beneficiaries to maintain their lifestyle without the overwhelming responsibility of managing a large sum during a time of grief.
The flexibility of these benefits is remarkable. You can customise payments for different beneficiaries—perhaps 20 years for a spouse, until age 24 for children, or for the entire lifetime of elderly parents. Business partners can use them to keep operations running smoothly during transition periods. The podcast even reveals a significant tax advantage: life income benefits can reduce estate duty by 12% compared to equivalent lump sum policies, and the monthly payments to beneficiaries are completely tax-free.
Whether you're planning for your family's future, supporting aging parents, or protecting a business, this episode offers practical insights into creating financial continuity beyond the grave. Listen now to discover if the "monthly security" approach might be the missing piece in your estate planning puzzle.

Waiting periods might sound like just another technical detail in your insurance policy, but they're actually one of the most critical elements determining whether your income protection insurance will be there when you need it most. Bronwyn and Craig, deep dive into this often misunderstood aspect of financial planning, revealing how your choice of waiting period dramatically affects your ability to claim.
The conversation explores how waiting periods function differently for income protection compared to other insurance products. While medical aid or funeral cover typically have once-off waiting periods when you first join, income protection waiting periods apply every single time you need to claim for unrelated events. This seemingly small distinction makes an enormous difference – Bidvest Life Claim Report statistics reveal that 42% of claims paid on policies with 7-day waiting periods wouldn't qualify under 30-day waiting periods.
Melody from Bidvest Life unpacks their innovative "Fast-Track Criteria Events" that revolutionizes claims processing. Rather than waiting for lengthy occupational disability assessments, this approach identifies over 200 common medical conditions and injuries that repeatedly appear in claims data. When clients experience these specific events, they can receive immediate guaranteed payouts upon providing simple medical proof, bypassing traditional waiting periods altogether.
The hosts examine who qualifies for shorter waiting periods, challenging traditional industry norms that reserved 7-day waiting periods exclusively for professionals and self-employed individuals. The discussion reveals how commission earners, contract workers, and people with three-year degrees can now access this vital protection that was previously unavailable to them. They also highlight the powerful Future Cover Protector benefit that allows young professionals to increase their coverage by up to 300% without medical underwriting as their careers progress - a game-changing feature for those whose earnings will grow substantially over time.

Securing your financial future starts much earlier than most of us realise. In this eye-opening conversation with Melody from Bidvest Life, we tackle the critical importance of income protection insurance for young South Africans - a demographic that often believes they're invincible.
Training Specialist, Melody shares her powerful personal story that changed everything: being diagnosed with an autoimmune condition in her twenties rendered her medically uninsurable for life. Now in her forties with a family and property, she faces a protection gap that can never be filled. This cautionary tale underscores why waiting to get coverage can be a devastating mistake.
We explore the innovative Bidvest Life approach to protecting students as young as 17 - even before they earn an income. From just R150 monthly, young people can secure substantial coverage that follows them from matric through university and into their careers. The conversation highlights real claims that demonstrate the value of early protection, including a university student who will receive R23 million in lifetime benefits after a hit-and-run accident left him permanently disabled. (risk profile dependant)
Perhaps most valuable is Bidvest Life's conversion privilege, allowing students to transition to comprehensive coverage upon graduation without medical underwriting - even if they've already claimed for conditions like cancer. This feature provides invaluable continuity regardless of health changes during student years.
Your ability to earn an income is your greatest financial asset - worth millions over your lifetime. Yet for young people without accumulated wealth, it's often the least protected asset. Don't wait until it's too late. Contact your financial planner to learn how affordable protection can secure your future today, regardless of what tomorrow might bring.

What happens when critical illness strikes but you can still work? Most income protection policies won't pay a cent, leaving you financially vulnerable during life's most challenging moments.
In this revealing conversation with Melody from Bidvest Life, we uncover a revolutionary approach to critical illness protection that addresses the significant gaps in traditional coverage. While conventional income benefits require you to be continuously unable to work before payments begin, Bidvest Life's CI Income benefit pays upon diagnosis alone – regardless of whether you're still working.
Melody walks us through the three major problems with traditional income protection for critical illness: patients rarely meet waiting period requirements, benefits stop immediately when doctors clear you for work (despite emotional recovery needs), and standard payments don't account for the additional expenses serious illness brings.
The solution? A guaranteed 12-month income benefit that pays 130% of your net income upon diagnosis of conditions like cancer, heart attack, stroke, or other listed critical illnesses. This benefit continues even if you return to work, giving you crucial financial breathing room during treatment and recovery. (Less the waiting period)
We explore a powerful real-world example of a 27-year-old teacher diagnosed with eye melanoma whose guaranteed income allowed her to make life-changing decisions about work and family support during treatment – something traditional coverage would never have permitted.
The episode also covers innovative features like extended income protection without requiring permanent disability, coverage until age 75, and the ability to convert income benefits to lump-sum coverage at retirement without medical underwriting.
Whether you're young and healthy or approaching retirement, this conversation reveals why understanding the nuances of critical illness coverage could make all the difference when life happens. Subscribe to Know Your Money for more insights that help protect your financial future.

Who gets your money when you die? The answer might surprise you—and could devastate your loved ones if you haven't properly structured your beneficiary nominations. In this eye-opening discussion, we unravel a critical financial planning topic that affects everyone with life insurance, investments, or retirement accounts.
Many people mistakenly believe their will controls everything, but certain assets transfer completely outside your will based solely on beneficiary designations. We walk through real-life scenarios where outdated beneficiary nominations have directed substantial assets to ex-spouses or siblings instead of current partners and children—all because someone forgot to update a form they completed years ago.
Beyond the basics, we explore advanced strategies for complex family situations. Learn how to use beneficiary nominations strategically in blended families or when maintenance agreements complicate matters. We dive into the crucial concept of alternative beneficiaries—what happens if you and your primary beneficiary die simultaneously? Without proper planning, your assets could end up in unexpected hands. We also discuss the importance of liquidity planning to ensure your estate has enough cash to handle immediate expenses without forcing loved ones to sell assets at the worst possible time.
This conversation might seem uncomfortable, but it's absolutely essential. Your financial legacy depends on getting these details right. Take the time to review your beneficiary nominations today—your family will thank you for preventing the confusion, delays, and potential heartbreak that comes from overlooked planning. Death creates enough emotional turmoil without adding financial chaos to the mix. Yet that's exactly what happens when business owners fail to plan properly for their loan accounts—those often substantial debts between themselves and their companies.
Most entrepreneurs pour personal money into their businesses, creating director loan accounts where the company owes them money. What many don't realize is that upon death, these loan accounts immediately become assets in their estate that must be collected. Suddenly, the business faces a potentially crippling financial obligation at precisely the moment it's already vulnerable from losing a key person. Without proper planning, this can force distress sales of business assets or even bankruptcy.
The reverse scenario can be equally devastating. When directors borrow from their company—perhaps to fund education or personal investments—their death creates a debt their estate must repay. Without liquid assets available, this could force the sale of family homes or other personal assets, adding financial stress to grieving families.
Fortunately, specialized life insurance solutions exist specifically to address these loan account challenges. These policies create immediate liquidity either for the business to repay the deceased's estate or for the estate to repay business debts. When structured properly alongside buy-sell agreements and key person insurance (keeping each as separate, distinct policies), they form a comprehensive protection system that ensures business continuity while protecting family interests.
Don't procrastinate on this critical business planning step. The modest cost of proper insurance and legal documentation pales in comparison to the potential financial devastation that unprepared businesses and families face. Connect with financial planners and legal professionals experienced in business assurance to ensure your loan accounts won't become a financial crisis for those you leave behind.

What happens to your business when a partner unexpectedly dies? Without proper planning, their spouse might show up at your office the next day, declaring themselves your new business partner. This nightmare scenario plays out more often than you might think.
In this deeply practical conversation, we explore the critical difference between having life insurance and having the legal framework that makes it work. Many business owners make a dangerous mistake: they secure life policies but neglect the formal buy and sell agreement that ensures those funds properly compensate a deceased partner's family. Without this legal foundation, surviving partners can receive insurance payouts with no obligation to transfer those funds to the deceased's estate—leaving families with nothing while the business continues without them.
We break down exactly how a proper buy and sell arrangement works: partners take out life policies on each other individually (not through the company), and when one partner dies, the insurance pays out to fund the purchase of shares from the deceased's estate. This creates a clean transition that protects both the business and the partner's loved ones. We also tackle challenging scenarios like uninsurable partners, explaining how payment plans can be structured over 36-60 months to accommodate these situations.
Your business documentation must work harmoniously—shareholders agreements, MOI, and buy and sell agreements should "sing from the same hymn sheet." The life insurance coverage must reflect current business valuations, requiring reassessment every few years. We also explore tax implications, insurable interest requirements, and why professional guidance is essential throughout this process.
Ready to protect what you've built? Take action now to ensure your business partnership has the proper agreements in place. Your legacy—and your family's financial security—depend on it.

Protecting your business from unexpected tragedy is something most entrepreneurs don't want to think about, but ignoring this crucial planning could cost you everything you've built.
Key man insurance represents one of the most important protection strategies for small to medium businesses, yet it remains widely misunderstood and underutilized. We break down exactly how this vital coverage works - when a company takes out insurance on an essential team member whose absence would significantly impact operations, the policy provides financial resources to weather the storm if that person dies or becomes permanently disabled.
But the devil is in the details. The tax implications alone require careful consideration - should you make premiums tax-deductible and accept a taxable payout, or forgo the deduction for a tax-free benefit? We walk through the four critical requirements that determine whether the policy becomes part of the insured's estate (with potential estate duty liability), a particular concern for family businesses where relatives might benefit indirectly. Understanding these nuances could save your company from unexpected financial burdens during an already difficult transition.
The podcast explores practical questions too: How do insurers determine who qualifies as a "key person"? What documentation is needed? How much coverage is appropriate? Whether you're thinking about your star salesperson, technical genius, or the founder who holds all the client relationships, this episode provides essential guidance on protecting your company's future. Don't wait until it's too late - proper planning with professional guidance ensures both your business and the families who depend on it remain secure no matter what happens.

Ever wonder why you handle money the way you do? Or why your partner's financial decisions sometimes seem completely baffling? The answer might lie in your personality type.
We welcome back Joni Peddie from Resilient People Bounce Forward to explore the fascinating intersection of the Enneagram personality system and financial behaviour. Joni breaks down how each of the nine Enneagram types approaches money differently—from the perfectionist Type One with their clear, rigid thinking about what's financially "right or wrong" to the adventure-seeking Type Seven who might spontaneously fund a music festival trip to Mongolia without considering tomorrow's responsibilities.
The conversation goes beyond mere categorisation to offer practical insights. We discuss how Type Twos often struggle with financial boundaries, frequently supporting extended family at their own expense. We explore how Type Threes view money as a performance metric, while Type Fours might prioritise their passions regardless of practical considerations. Particularly enlightening is Joni's advice for helping procrastinating Type Nines make financial decisions by connecting those choices to their deeper values and timeline-specific goals.
What makes this episode particularly valuable is its focus on relationships. When partners have different Enneagram types—like one focused on security while the other prioritises enjoyment—financial conflict often follows. Joni offers strategies for finding balance, creating timelines that honour both perspectives, and using self-awareness as the foundation for financial harmony. As she beautifully puts it, "Self-awareness is the beginning of wisdom."
Ready to understand your financial behaviours on a deeper level? Listen now, then connect with Joni on LinkedIn to continue your journey of financial self-discovery. Your relationship with money—and possibly your partner—might never be the same again.

What if the key to understanding yourself was discovered 2,500 years ago? In this fascinating conversation with Enneagram expert Joni Peddie from Resilient People, we unlock the secrets of this ancient personality system that's transforming modern relationships and workplaces.
Joni, who has studied the Enneagram for 33 years, reveals the surprising truth that we're born with our personality type – it's not something we develop over time. "Even identical twins have different mental temperaments," she explains, challenging common assumptions about personality development. Her passion for this system is infectious as she breaks down the nine distinct types, arranged in three triads: Anger (8,9,1), Feeling (2,3,4), and Thinking (5,6,7).
The real magic happens when Joni explains how this knowledge transforms relationships. Through personal stories – including how the Enneagram helped her daughter navigate her engagement – she demonstrates how understanding your partner's type creates more compassion and less judgment. Corporate teams worldwide have embraced this tool to improve workplace dynamics, with some companies requiring Enneagram assessments for all new employees.
What makes this episode particularly valuable is Joni's explanation of how we can move between healthy and unhealthy expressions of our type. "We can all move up and down within half an hour," she notes, describing how understanding these patterns helps us put our "best self forward in life." She emphasises that while our core type never changes, we can integrate positive aspects of other types to become more balanced individuals.
Ready to discover your type and transform your relationships? Listen now and take the first step toward what Aristotle called "the beginning of wisdom" – knowing yourself.

Death and money make uncomfortable bedfellows, yet understanding what happens to your retirement funds after you're gone is crucial for protecting those you love. Section 37C of the Pension Funds Act fundamentally changes how your retirement benefits are distributed—and many South Africans discover this only when it's too late.
Have you nominated your spouse, children, or perhaps a new partner as beneficiaries on your retirement annuity? You might be surprised to learn that these nominations aren't necessarily binding. The podcast reveals how independent trustees have the legal authority to distribute your retirement benefits differently than you intended, prioritizing financial dependents regardless of your wishes.
Through compelling real-world examples, we explore how this legislation has protected families when retirement fund members made impulsive beneficiary changes. One particularly poignant case involves a husband who, after 15 years of marriage, changed his pension beneficiary to his new workplace romance—only for trustees to ultimately award 80% to his wife and nothing to his new partner after his passing. We also discuss scenarios where young professionals forget to update their beneficiary nominations after starting families, leaving outdated designations that could have significant consequences.
Most importantly, we clarify the crucial distinction between retirement funds and life insurance policies. While Section 37C governs retirement benefits, life insurance proceeds go directly to your nominated beneficiaries without trustee intervention—a vital planning consideration for anyone wanting certainty about who receives what. Understanding these differences allows for comprehensive estate planning that truly protects your loved ones according to your wishes.

Navigating the world of financial planning requires more than just finding someone to manage your money—it demands asking the right questions and understanding the fundamentals that protect your financial future.
In this enlightening episode of Know Your Money, hosts Bronwyn Waner and Craig Finch from Growth Financial Planning break down four essential concepts that form the cornerstone of sound financial planning: provider verification, investment wrappers, time horizons, and asset allocation.
We begin by exploring the critical importance of vetting financial service providers. Did you know that a missing FSP number could be your first warning sign of a potential scam? Learn how to protect yourself from Ponzi schemes and verify your financial planner's credentials through official channels. As Craig emphasizes, "Trusting our clients' money and keeping it safe is the most important thing for us."
The conversation then shifts to investment wrappers—those financial vehicles that hold your investments. Discover why an endowment might be perfect for one person but completely wrong for another, and how some advisors might recommend certain products based on commission rather than client needs. We unpack the restrictions of retirement annuities, the flexibility of unit trusts, and why understanding these structures is crucial for tax efficiency and estate planning.
Perhaps most importantly, we reveal why "every rand needs a plan" and how properly matching time horizons to investment strategies can prevent costly mistakes. That R100,000 bonus you received? Before investing it aggressively, consider whether you might need access to those funds sooner than expected—a misstep here could cost you significantly.
Finally, we explain how these concepts come together through strategic asset allocation, matching investment risk to specific financial goals and timelines. Whether you're saving for retirement, education, or a new car, understanding these four pillars will help you ask better questions and make more informed decisions about your financial future. This isn't just about growing wealth—it's about creating a plan that truly works for your unique needs.

What does it really take to fund a child's education without drowning in debt later? We crunch the actual numbers and reveal practical strategies that every parent and grandparent should know.
Starting with our listener's question about university funding, we break down the monthly commitment needed from birth: R2,300 monthly invested over 18 years will cover four years of university education (approximately R155,000 annually in today's money). Add just R260 more for a starter car when they begin their studies. The total - R2,500 monthly - creates a solid foundation that can alleviate significant financial pressure during your 50s when you should be focusing on retirement preparation.
For families wanting comprehensive coverage, we explore the full education journey, revealing that R5,000 monthly from birth would fund everything from primary school through university. We don't just present the numbers; we delve into sophisticated investment strategies, explaining how to structure education investments based on time horizons. Our suggested approach includes creating separate targeted funds for different education stages with tailored risk profiles for each.
The conversation takes an interesting turn when we discuss how endowments can be strategically deployed for education funding, particularly for those in higher tax brackets. The "staggered endowment" approach we outline provides both tax efficiency and perfect timing alignment with educational expenses. Perhaps most valuable is our discussion about involving grandparents and extended family - transforming well-intentioned but often forgotten birthday toys into meaningful contributions toward your child's future.

What happens when your final wishes aren't legally binding? Attorney Charl Du Plessis pulls back the curtain on the high-stakes world of will execution in this eye-opening conversation about estate planning essentials.
Most people don't realize that seemingly minor technical errors can completely invalidate a will. Charl walks us through shocking real-world examples where small oversights led to devastating consequences - like a will deemed invalid because of a 13-centimeter gap between text and signature, or when a commissioner signed in their capacity as an attorney rather than explicitly as a commissioner of oaths. These technicalities might seem trivial, but they've forced families into protracted legal battles costing hundreds of thousands of rand.
The discussion takes an unexpected turn when Charl reveals the Roman-Dutch legal principle that prevents someone from inheriting if they caused the testator's death - even negligently. He shares the astonishing story of the De Wett case where a wife who arranged for her husband to be "confined to a wheelchair" (but was instead killed) tried to claim she should still inherit. This principle extends to accidental deaths too, potentially preventing a spouse from inheriting if they caused a fatal car accident through negligence - unless your will specifically allows for it.
Beyond the legal formalities, Charl offers practical guidance on protecting your family during the lengthy estate administration process, emphasizing the importance of including maintenance provisions to support dependents while estates are being settled. His insights underscore why professional estate planning isn't just about distributing assets - it's about ensuring your final intentions will actually be honored. Ready to take control of your legacy? Start by understanding the critical legal foundations that make your will truly valid.

Capital Legacy's Kirsten Starkey breaks down the often-overlooked costs associated with estate administration and explains how their Legacy Protection Plan can safeguard against these expenses. Most South Africans underestimate just how expensive it is to die.
• Executor fees (3.5% plus VAT) can amount to over 4% of your total estate value
• Conveyancing fees apply when transferring property, even between spouses
• Trust fees accrue when money is held in trust for minor beneficiaries
• Administration fees cover various processes including advertising the death and Master's Office fees
• The Legacy Protection Plan (LPP) indemnifies these "big four" fees based on the plan selected
• LPP includes immediate liquidity benefit that pays cash to beneficiaries within 48 hours
• Special "Fee Plan" for clients over 60 covers 90% of all fees with no underwriting
• Plans are priced based on age of entry with inflation adjustments annually
• Annual reviews are essential as your estate composition changes over time
Contact a financial advisor to discuss how estate protection can be incorporated into your comprehensive financial plan. Having a will is just the first step – protecting your estate from fees ensures your legacy reaches your beneficiaries intact.

Retirement planning goes far beyond building a substantial nest egg. As our guest Amika Gordon from Coronation Fund Managers explains, successfully navigating your post-retirement years requires understanding three critical risks that could derail even the most robust financial plans.
The first risk—inflation—is aptly named "the silent killer" for good reason. At a 6% inflation rate, one rand today will only purchase 17 cents worth of goods in 30 years. This erosion of purchasing power can devastate retirement savings unless your portfolio consistently outperforms inflation. Amika emphasizes that equities have historically been the best asset class for beating inflation over extended periods, making them an essential component of any post-retirement strategy despite their volatility.
Longevity risk presents another significant challenge as medical advances continue extending our lifespans. Many retirees underestimate how long their savings need to last, often planning for 15-20 years when they should prepare for 30 or more. This extended timeline affects both portfolio construction and sustainable withdrawal rates, with research suggesting an initial drawdown of around 5% can maintain capital adequacy throughout a three-decade retirement.
Perhaps most overlooked is sequence of returns risk—the potentially devastating impact of retiring just before or during a market downturn. Since no one can predict market timing with certainty, portfolios need to balance growth potential with volatility management through careful asset allocation and diversification. This explains why financial advisors recommend different investment strategies for pre-retirement accumulation versus post-retirement income generation.
The conversation offers practical insights for creating resilient retirement plans that can withstand these often-underestimated threats. Whether you're approaching retirement or already there, understanding these risks and implementing appropriate mitigation strategies could mean the difference between financial security and running out of money when you need it most.

Venture into the world of professional investing with Amika Gordhan, investment specialist at Coronation Fund Managers, as she pulls back the curtain on what makes this 30-year-old South African investment powerhouse tick.
Amika reveals Coronation's distinctive philosophy centered on two core principles: an uncompromisingly long-term perspective and disciplined valuation-driven approach. Unlike managers fixated on quick wins, Coronation evaluates investments over five-year horizons or longer, allowing them to see beyond temporary market noise and focus on intrinsic business value. With remarkable frankness, Amika explains how the price paid for assets today determines future returns—the foundation of their investment strategy.
We explore how Coronation's team of 52 investment professionals conducts hands-on research, meeting with company management and competitors rather than relying on external analysts. This proprietary approach gives them unique insights into both traditional South African companies and multinational businesses listed on the JSE. Amika shares fascinating examples of their portfolio construction, including how they balance exposure between domestic operations and international powerhouses like Naspers, Anheuser-Busch, and Richemont.
The conversation demystifies complex concepts like bond investments, building block funds versus flagship funds, and the crucial importance of diversification in managing investment risk. You'll gain valuable perspective on how professional fund managers remove emotion from investing decisions while maintaining the discipline to sell when assets reach fair value—even when it might be tempting to hold longer.
Whether you're an experienced investor or just beginning your financial journey, this episode offers rare insights into the methodical, research-driven approach that has made Coronation one of South Africa's most respected fund managers. Your relationship with money might be more complex than you realize. Ever thought about what happens when you speak kindly to your finances instead of with fear or frustration? Bronwyn Waner and Craig Finch explore this fascinating concept through the lens of Dr. Emoto's famous water crystal experiment, where water exposed to positive words formed beautiful crystal patterns while negative energy created distorted images.
We often carry unconscious money scripts from childhood. Remember hearing "money doesn't grow on trees" or witnessing your parents' complicated financial behaviors? These experiences shape our emotional reactions to spending, saving, and investing well into adulthood. What's revolutionary about this conversation is the suggestion that we don't have just one relationship with money, but several distinct connections: with earning, receiving, giving, saving, and growing wealth. Each carries its own emotional patterns that might be helping or hindering your financial journey.
The podcast presents a powerful visualization exercise where you imagine having coffee with money as if it were a person. Would your money appear as an intimidating force or a supportive ally? This personification reveals deeper truths about your financial mindset. Whether you struggle with retirement planning, experience guilt around spending, or worry about having enough, transforming your internal money dialogue could be the missing piece in your financial wellness. By shifting from scarcity thinking to abundance consciousness, you might discover that money, like water, responds to the energy you direct toward it. Ready to speak more kindly to your finances and see what transforms?

Worried about the South African Rand and wondering how to protect your wealth? This essential conversation tackles one of the most persistent questions in South African personal finance: how to effectively invest offshore when you have concerns about local currency stability.
We journey through the fascinating history of the Rand - from its days of strength in the 1960s when it traded at 80 cents to the dollar, to today's reality around 18 Rand to the dollar. Despite these dramatic shifts, we explore why a balanced approach remains crucial for most South Africans, with financial experts typically recommending about 40% offshore allocation for optimal diversification.
The episode breaks down two primary offshore investment pathways: asset swaps (where investments are made internationally but paid back in Rand) and physical transfers using your annual allowances. Every South African taxpayer can move R1 million offshore yearly without SARS approval, plus potentially an additional R10 million with proper tax clearance. For those with smaller amounts, we discuss investment products that allow as little as R50,000 to be globally diversified.
Beyond technical strategies, we examine deeper questions about confidence in South Africa's future and how that should shape investment decisions. Despite valid concerns, we highlight South Africa's economic strengths, including our globally trusted, freely tradable currency and the Reserve Bank's impressive track record of never defaulting on obligations.
Rather than making financial decisions from fear or following well-meaning but potentially misguided advice from friends, this episode emphasizes the importance of developing a comprehensive plan tailored to your specific circumstances and goals. Remember: every Rand needs a plan. Listen now to gain clarity on building a resilient investment portfolio that balances local commitments with global opportunities.

Ever wonder why you sometimes make financial decisions you later regret? The answer might lie not in your knowledge of investments, but in your state of mind when making those choices.
Roland, a seasoned coach who's worked with financial planners for over 15 years through Aspiral Coaching and Leadership, joins us to share a powerful tool that's transforming the financial planning world: the BodyScan meditation. This isn't your typical meditation practice—it's what Roland calls a "mindfulness hack" that delivers immediate results even for skeptics and beginners.
Through a guided experience, Roland takes us on a journey from the soles of our feet to the crown of our heads, teaching us the crucial skill of directing our attention deliberately. As we practice feeling rather than thinking, something remarkable happens: the constant mental chatter subsides, creating space for clarity and presence. This shift from perpetual thinking to mindful awareness creates the perfect mental environment for making sound financial decisions.
The magic of this practice extends beyond the meditation itself. As our hosts discover, the post-meditation state brings heightened awareness, reduced confirmation bias, and stronger receptivity to professional guidance. When approaching financial planning meetings, this mental clarity allows both planners and clients to engage more authentically, moving beyond preconceived notions to discover truly personalized financial solutions. Ready to transform your relationship with money through mindfulness? This episode offers not just theory but a practical tool you can begin using immediately.
Try the guided meditation, share your experience with us, and discover how this simple practice might become your secret weapon for financial success. Subscribe now for more insights that bridge the gap between personal development and financial wellbeing.

What makes a truly great financial planner? While technical expertise is essential, our conversation with Roland from Aspiral Coaching and Leadership reveals that emotional intelligence might be the secret ingredient that separates good financial advice from transformative financial guidance.
Roland shares his experience helping financial planners develop coaching skills that enable them to connect more deeply with clients. Through better questioning, patience, and mindful presence, planners can uncover what really matters to clients beyond the numbers. This emotional intelligence becomes particularly valuable during market turbulence, when staying grounded helps both planners and clients avoid reactive decisions that could derail long-term financial plans.
Craig brings nearly 40 years of financial planning experience to the conversation, having navigated through five major market crashes. His perspective highlights how a seasoned planner's calm guidance during downturns—like the 40% market drop in 1998—can save clients from panic-selling and instead help them stay invested to capture the eventual recovery. This wisdom isn't just about market knowledge; it's about emotional self-management.
We explore practical mindfulness techniques, particularly the "body scan," which both planners and clients can use before meetings to gain clarity and perspective. By focusing on bodily sensations rather than racing thoughts, this practice creates space for more meaningful conversations about financial goals as they connect to life values. The Wheel of Life assessment emerges as another valuable tool that helps clients align their financial decisions with what truly matters across all life domains.
Whether you're a financial professional looking to elevate your practice or someone seeking a deeper relationship with your money, this episode offers insights into how mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and genuine care create the foundation for financial wellbeing. Subscribe, share your thoughts, and let us know which mindfulness practices you might incorporate into your financial journey.

What happens when life changes in an instant? Kalvin van Baalen knows this reality all too well. After flying into power lines during a paragliding excursion, Kalvin fell into the resulting fire, suffering burns over 70% of his body. That catastrophic moment transformed him from an active, healthy 21-year-old to someone who would spend over 400 days fighting for his life in ICU.
Kalvin's story isn't just about survival—it's about extraordinary resilience and perspective. "Nothing is actually an obstacle compared to what a real obstacle was—surviving and trying to walk again," he shares with remarkable candor. Now pursuing a finance degree with plans to become a CFA, Kalvin has channeled his experience into a methodical approach toward building a sustainable future. His paragliding accident didn't just change his body; it fundamentally altered his relationship with risk, both physical and financial.
As an ambassador for disabled golf, Kalvin visits schools and works with children with disabilities, showing them what's possible through authentic engagement and competitive spirit. His willingness to be visible—playing golf in shorts that don't hide his scars—creates powerful connections with children who can truly relate to his experience. Through our conversation, we explore crucial financial planning considerations for individuals with disabilities, particularly regarding insurance options available through group coverage at larger companies. Kalvin's journey reminds us why proper financial planning isn't optional—it's essential protection against life's unpredictable turns. When everything can change in thirty minutes, as it did for Kalvin, having appropriate safeguards in place becomes not just prudent but potentially life-saving.

Kalvin van Baalen shares his remarkable survival story after a devastating paragliding accident where he hit power lines, caught fire, and subsequently spent 413 days in ICU with 42 operations. His journey from being completely burned and given little chance of survival to becoming a competitive disabled golfer demonstrates extraordinary resilience and the power of an optimistic mindset.
• Kalvin was a passionate paraglider who dreamed of pursuing it professionally before his accident at age 21
• After hitting power lines during a competition, he suffered severe burns and spent over a year in intensive care
• His medical aid initially suggested doctors should "palliate" him as a non-recoverable case
• Despite spending two years in a wheelchair, he maintained a "delusionally optimistic" attitude throughout recovery
• Kalvin now plays competitive golf for Disabled Golfer South Africa, unable to qualify for Deaf Golf by just a few decibels
• His medical expenses totalled approximately R22 million, potentially the highest individual medical aid claim in South Africa
• Government hospitals in South Africa typically palliate patients with over 50% burns due to resource constraints
• Kalvin's advice: life can change in an instant, so pursue what matters and consider financial protection early

Navigating the complex world of South African trusts has become increasingly challenging with recent tax legislation changes. Marteen Michau, founder of Fidelis Vox, brings clarity to these murky waters with expertise that could save families from costly mistakes.
The conversation reveals how South African trust structures are facing new hurdles, particularly for families with international connections. When South African trusts distribute funds to non-resident beneficiaries, they now face punitive double taxation scenarios. The recent extension of tax legislation means all taxable income (not just capital gains) distributed to non-residents will be taxed in the trust at higher rates, while still being taxable in the beneficiary's country of residence. With two different taxpayers involved, double tax agreements provide no relief.
Similarly significant is how distributions between South African trusts are now handled. The Thistle court case confirmed that capital gains distributed from one SA trust to another remain trapped at higher trust tax rates, even when subsequently passed to individual beneficiaries in the same tax year. This doubles the effective tax burden compared to distributing directly to individuals.
For those looking to internationalize their wealth, there's some positive news. SARS and the Reserve Bank now accept applications for direct distributions from SA trusts to offshore trusts (provided the offshore trust is a named beneficiary), streamlining a previously complex process requiring individual intermediaries and triggering transfer pricing complications.
Perhaps most compelling is Marteen's approach to preserving family wealth across generations through "family charter workshops." Gathering three generations around a metaphorical campfire to share the wealth creator's journey helps establish shared values and objectives that guide future financial decisions. As Marteen wisely notes: "Don't pass money on, pass a legacy on" – especially critical when research shows inherited wealth is now typically squandered by the second rather than third generation.
Have you considered how these tax changes might impact your family's wealth preservation strategy? Proper planning has never been more important.

Demystifying trusts as practical financial planning tools is the focus of our enlightening conversation with Marteen from Fidelis Vox, whose very name means "Trusted Voice." Moving beyond outdated perceptions of trusts as tax avoidance vehicles, we uncover their strategic applications for both business owners and families.
Marteen walks us through fundamental trust concepts, explaining how these entities provide critical asset protection for business owners against potential creditors while ensuring business continuity after death. The structure avoids estate freezing, excessive executor fees, and potential family conflicts during estate administration – increasingly valuable benefits given South Africa's current delays in estate processing.
The conversation explores practical scenarios where trusts make sense: protecting assets for financially vulnerable family members, housing shared family vacation properties, and structuring business interests. We also address common misconceptions, discussing the requirement for independent trustees, the implications of housing primary residences in trusts, and the current regulations regarding loan accounts to trusts.
For families considering wealth protection strategies, Marteen highlights testamentary trusts as cost-effective alternatives that activate only upon death, providing protection for minor children without incurring ongoing administration expenses during your lifetime. She emphasizes that proper trust management is essential to maintain their legal protections and prevent them from being deemed alter egos of their founders.
Whether you're a business owner seeking asset protection, a parent planning for your children's financial security, or a family wanting to preserve shared assets across generations, this episode provides practical insights to help determine if a trust structure aligns with your specific circumstances. Death comes for us all, but the administrative nightmare that follows doesn't have to haunt your loved ones for years. In this eye-opening episode of Know Your Money, we sit down with Jakes, a candidate attorney who shares his ongoing six-year battle to settle his father's estate—a cautionary tale that might just save your family from similar anguish.
Jake walks us through the cascading problems caused by his father's 30-year-old will. When his father passed away in 2019, what should have been a straightforward process became an administrative labyrinth. With parents who had divorced, remarried, and divorced again, the outdated will left the family vulnerable to legal complications that continue to this day in 2025.
The story takes a particularly troubling turn when Jakes describes the bank's role as executor. After initially denying possession of the will, they later demanded substantial upfront fees before beginning their duties. We explore the shocking moment when Jake's family couldn't access funds for the funeral despite his father having arranged payment before his death, forcing them to postpone the burial. After two years of difficulties, the bank resigned as executor, leaving the family in legal limbo.
Property complications, unexpected tax liabilities, and mounting costs add layers of complexity to Jake's story. His professional legal insight makes this more than just a personal tragedy—it's a masterclass in what can go wrong when estate planning is neglected. Before you dismiss updating your will as something that can wait, listen to this episode and reconsider. Your family's peace of mind might depend on it. Share this episode with someone whose future decisions could be transformed by Jake's powerful testimony.

What happens when life's busy pace means you never get around to making that will? Attorney Jakes Myberg from Waks Attorneys explains the often complicated reality of dying "intestate" - without a valid will - and why it matters more than you might think.
When someone dies without a will in South Africa, three key pieces of legislation take control: the Interstate Succession Act, the Administration of Deceased Estates Act, and the Estate Duty Act. Together, these determine who gets what from your estate - and it's rarely as straightforward as people expect. Your marital status becomes particularly crucial - those married in community of property will see half their estate automatically go to their spouse, but the remaining assets follow a formula that divides inheritance between spouse and children according to precise calculations.
The consequences for families can be significant. Minor children's inheritance must go to the Guardian's Fund, a government-managed account that holds money until they turn 18. While this protects the funds, accessing money for legitimate needs involves bureaucracy, and the administration is often inefficient due to high volumes. After 30 years, unclaimed funds revert to the state - a sobering thought for those who assume their assets will automatically reach the right hands.
Estate duty implications apply whether you have a will or not (with the first R3.5 million exempt), but spouses can effectively transfer assets between them tax-free, potentially preserving more wealth for heirs. Without proper planning, these opportunities may be missed. Even more concerning is what happens with insolvent estates or when financial institutions act as executors, often prioritizing their fees over efficient administration.
The message is clear - creating a valid will isn't just about distributing assets; it's about protecting loved ones from unnecessary complications during an already difficult time. Don't leave your family's future to chance when a simple document can provide clarity and control over your legacy.

What happens to your money when you die? Most people don't realize that upon death, bank accounts are frozen, property transfers take time, and assets remain locked for on average a minimum of six months while the complex estate administration process unfolds. This eye-opening conversation with Jakes Myburgh from Waks Attorneys reveals the critical importance of having a properly executed will and understanding the estate administration process.
Jakes walks us through the legal requirements for a valid will according to the Wills Act - it must be in writing, signed by the testator (who must be at least 16 years old), and witnessed by two people (at least 14 years old). We explore the vital role of executors who oversee estate administration, charging a 3.5% fee plus VAT on the total estate value, and why appointing the right executor matters more than most realize.
The discussion takes a fascinating turn when we unpack the actual mechanics of what happens after death - from the mandatory reporting to the Master of the High Court, to advertising for creditors in newspapers, completing final tax returns, and preparing a Liquidation and Distribution account. This process, which typically takes six months minimum but can stretch to years, creates a financial black hole during which beneficiaries cannot access most assets.
Perhaps most valuable is our examination of strategic estate planning solutions that can protect loved ones from financial hardship during this waiting period. We contrast assets that must go through the estate process with those that bypass it entirely through beneficiary nominations - highlighting how life policies, retirement annuities and properly structured investments can provide immediate financial relief to family members when they need it most.
Whether you're building wealth or already established, this conversation provides essential knowledge about protecting your legacy and ensuring your assets reach your loved ones efficiently. Don't wait until it's too late - proper estate planning isn't just about distributing wealth, it's about preventing unnecessary hardship for those you leave behind.

If you have a mental block about analysing your budget, we suggest that you implement a system of ‘financial buckets’ to assist with setting boundaries.
When using buckets, you divide assets into separate buckets based on periods of time. Those time horizons and the number of buckets can be flexible.
By putting boundaries in place, you become accountable in the moment rather than after the fact. This truly helps with the psychology of managing your money.
