The Nemeth Narratives is a collection of stories - from a diverse creative community of storytellers. Each podcast takes us through a delightful and insightful journey often punctuated with side trips to the fear and anxiety that often challenges many of us in moving forward towards our goals...our dreams...our successes. For some, it's the first they've shared. And it started with one thought...EVERYONE has a story.
Salvador Ballano Flor - has been affiliated with the Educational Opportunity Program at San Diego State University for over 30 + years retiring in 2010 employed as a Counselor and served as Advisor to Andres Bonifacio Samahan, Filipino student organization, since 1975, Asian Pacific Student Alliance since 1996 and Pacific Islander Student Association since 1996. In this capacity, assisted in their annual High School Conferences, Samahan Filipino Culture Night and Filipino Graduation , APSA Fashion and Talent Show and PISA Annual Luau.
Additionally, assisted in establishing the Filipino Collegiate Collaborative, a coalition of student organizations from local colleges including AB Samahan, KP from UCSD, FUSO from USD, CSUSM Kamalayan Alliance, Pagkakaisa from SWC, Miramar College FASA. These student organizations were encouraged to be involved with our Filipino Community via COPAO, FANHS, HOP, The Filipino School, NAFFAA Region 10, and FILAMEDA.
His own journey of community involvement began with the The Bicol Club, Filipino Youth Alliance, Election of Officers at FAVA Hall, the Miss Philippines protest , Anti Martial Law demonstrations, the Pilipino Cultural Resource Center and attending Pilipino Peoples Far West Statewide Conventions, participating in two Bayani Challenge of Gawad Kalinga in the Philippines in Rio Tuba, Palawan in 2010 as well as in 2011 in Bantayan Island in Cebu.
More recently, supporting the publication of The Bridge Generation Sons and Daughters of Filipino Pioneers by Dr. Dario DeGuzman Villa, Beyond the Mask by Professor Riz Oades, Filipinos in San Diego by Professors Judy Patacsil, Felix Tuyay and Rudy Guevarra Jr and Stories of Some Filipino Americans of San Diego by Simeon G. Silverio Jr. Currently involved with COPAO Leadership Academy and contributing to the FOSBE Exhibit and supporting the Filgrimage, The Filipino Story, and the San Diego Filipino Cinema.
Although retired from his full time position, he continues working with college students as an Adjunct Counselor at San Diego City College and Cuyamaca Community College Counseling Offices.

Felix Tuyay is a 73-year old second-generation Filipino American from a San Diego U.S. Navy family. He has been involved with the San Diego community for over 50 years. He received a B.A. Degree at San Diego State University (1973) and a M.A. at Goddard-Cambridge in Mass (1977). He taught Philippine and Filipino and U.S. History courses. He also taught at UCLA, USD, Mesa and Miramar Colleges. He is also one of the founding faculty at the Filipino School in San Diego.
Prof. Tuyay co-authored the book "Filipinos in San Diego," featured in the KPBS documentary, "San Diego Historic Places, Filipino American Community" and contributed to the Filipinos of Southbay exhibit.
Affiliations include Filipino American National Historic Society, Fil-Am Educator Association, Council of Pilipino American Organizations, and Gawad Kalinga (Building of homes in the Philippines).

Susanna Peredo Swap is an award-winning producer, journalist, and film director with 25+ years of experience in arts administration, acting, jazz vocals, arts advocacy, and public relations. She serves on multiple boards, including the San Diego Museum Council, Women in Tourism & Hospitality International, San Diego Press Club, and advisory boards for Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego and Diversionary Theatre. Additionally, she co-leads Arts & Culture for World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 and advises UCSD-TV’s ARTS Channel. Susanna holds degrees and certificates in arts management, business, photography, and art history from SDSU, University of Maryland, USD, UCSD; the Royal National Theatre in London; La Sorbonne, and École du Louvre in Paris. At the San Diego International Airport Art Program, she curated over 80 exhibitions and managed a robust performing arts series for millions of yearly travelers. Her passion for the arts has led her to visit 16 countries and inspired her to found Vanguard Culture, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing San Diego's creative workforce and fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration among the visual, performing and culinary arts.

Zeinabu irene Davis is an independent filmmaker and Professor of Communication at the University of California, San Diego. Her work is passionately concerned with the depiction of women of African descent. Her dramatic film entitled Compensation (1999) features two inter-related love stories offering a view of Black Deaf culture. New Yorker Magazine critic Richard Brody has named it as one of the best American independent films of the 20th century. Criterion and Janus Films will re-release the film in Fall 2024. She recently completed a dramatic short about a COVID-19 experience entitled Pandemic Bread, which has played at 8 festivals and earned nominations for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Becca Godinez at the San Diego Film Awards 2024. She is working on a documentary, Stars of the Northern Sky, which tells the stories of abolitionists Sojourner Truth, Phyllis Wheatley, and Marie Joseph Angelique.

Founder and managing director for BFT, Consultants, Dr. Ontai works with business managers, corporate leadership, and higher education practitioners in providing professional development training to improve people communications skills in management and teaching. Using neuroscience as the basis for improving people communications, strategies and skills are designed around the individual's emotional and cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
He has over 20 years of teaching in post-secondary education at two urban campuses, in addition to serving as interim campus director. He served as undergrad and graduate student advisor, faculty training lead, and doctoral student advisor. He is currently an adjunct professor at California Southern University, where he serves as committee member for doctoral learners completing their dissertations.
He is a peer-reviewer for American Education Research Association, AERA, and has served as a peer-reviewer for the University of New Mexico Mentoring Institution.
Dr. Ontai is also a licensed architect with over 25 years of diversified practice and freelance consulting work. His award-winning firm is recognized for designing school facilities and affordable housing, In addition, his firm has designed office buildings, shopping centers, restaurants, private residences, and public structures.

Jelynn Sophia Malone's journey from a dancer with the Samahan Filipino American Performing Arts and Education Center to a Hollywood figure and entrepreneur highlights her cultural richness and success. With over 19 years in media, she excelled as an actress and TV host for networks like ABC, CBS, NBC, MTV, and E!. As Co-Founder & Chief Brand Officer of Mostra Coffee, Jelynn's strategic vision has earned the company top accolades, including the 2020 Roaster of the Year and the 2022 US Coffee Roasting Championships. Co-founding Mostra with Beverly Magtanong, she aims to support Philippine coffee farmers and eradicate poverty. Jelynn's life blends cultural pride, artistic achievement, and entrepreneurial success. She is married to James Malone and has two daughters, Max and Harlowe, embodying the power of dreams and positive change.

Lianne A. Urada, Ph.D., MSW, LCSW, is a tenured professor of Social Work at San Diego State University and Associate Adjunct Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego. Her research focuses on developing ways to address human trafficking, homelessness, HIV, and historical community trauma, locally and globally, including a randomized clinical trial to help people who are suffering from the opioid overdose crisis surrounding U.S. public libraries.
Funded by the Nemeth Foundation to investigate the nature and extent of human trafficking and sexual exploitation among U.S. college students, Dr. Urada surveyed nearly one thousand college students from over 12 campuses in southern California (San Diego/Imperial Valley). One out of five reported experiencing force, fraud, or coercion into selling sex as a college student. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Urada is a three-time UCLA Bruin graduate.

Mylinh Arnett grew up in San Diego and tries to take in as much art as possible in her local community. Some years ago, when she was working as an attorney, she was really missing creativity in her everyday life. She told her friends she wanted to be around more artists. Her friend Bill Male took her at her word and asked her to take on his foundation, the William Male Foundation. Today, she finds it so fulfilling to be part of an organization that provides funding to artists in San Diego. She regularly meets so many artists who inspire her with their passion for their work. She looks forward to reading, seeing, listening to, and experiencing what your creative minds are producing.

Linda Caballero Sotelo, is an MPA graduate from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She is also the Executive Director & Chief Curator of New Americans Museum & Immigration Learning Center [NAM] in San Diego, CA. NAM is a visual arts & oral histories museum, advocacy & research NGO whose mission is to document, educate about and disseminate the contributions of multigenerational immigrants & refugees into the American narrative through arts, culture, and civic programming to confront & dispel stereotypes, & hate. Throughout her career, Linda’s work has centered on service while dismantling systems of oppression, uplifting community self-
determination, and social justice. She believes in the power of civic engagement and cultural public policy practices as tools for social change and for building understanding & tolerance.
Linda, a US citizen, was born in Tijuana, Mexico. She is a transnational, bicultural, Mexican-American leader and scholar whose childhood was spent crossing an international border daily for educational opportunities. She credits those experiences as informing and profoundly shaping her inclusive and pluralistic world view, understanding the painful, and difficult challenges of being misunderstood or unwelcome as an immigrant, refugee, or marginalized person in a world of
inequality, conflict and flux; yet fueled by human resilience and hope.

Alberto López Pulido is the founding chair of the Department of Ethnic Studies and has been on the faculty at the University of San Diego since 2003. He grew up in the South Bay and lived a life between borders and Fronteras that highly influenced his fronterizo ways of understanding the world. He received degrees in Sociology and Chicano Studies from the University of California, San Diego, and represents one of fifty-seven students who would graduate from the Mexican American Graduate Studies Program at the University of Notre Dame.
Dr. Pulido aligns himself with several community organizations, none more important than the Chicano Park Steering Committee who serve as the stewards of Chicano Park in San Diego, California. Alberto's scholarly commitment to relevant education rooted in a community epistemology guides his work as Director of the Turning Wheel Mobile Classroom Project – a project that provides a mobile space for supporting the urgent needs and challenges of our local communities. The Turning Wheel Project represents a partnership between the University of San Diego and the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center. Dr. Pulido also serves as Vice-Chair of the CPMCC’s Board of Directors.

Lee Ann Kim is a former TV journalist, community advocate, artist, yoga teacher, and founder of the San Diego Asian Film Festival, one of the largest film festivals of its kind in North America. Lee Ann started the Festival in 2000 and served as Executive Director of the film festival and its presenting nonprofit, Pacific Arts Movement, for 16 years.
For more than 14 years, she also worked in broadcast television, during which she earned an Emmy for investigative reporting at KGTV, the ABC affiliate in San Diego.
Currently, Lee Ann serves as a commissioner for the City of San Diego's Arts and Culture Commission. She is also the co-founder of the viral flashmob group of middle-aged women called Ajumma EXP. She is the proud mother of two young men, and celebrates more than 27 years of marriage with Louis Song.

In 1997, Kathi co-founded Survivors of Torture, International (SURVIVORS). SURVIVORS’ mission is to facilitate the healing of torture survivors and their families; educate professionals and the public about torture and its consequences; and advocate for torture survivors and the abolition of torture. She served as SURVIVORS’ first board chair before becoming its first executive director. In 2022 she announced her retirement.
She had extensive experience in health care, human rights, refugee resettlement and higher education. She received from San Jose State University her M.A. in Counseling and from the University of the Pacific her B.A. in International Relations with an emphasis on Latin America. She studied in Mexico and worked in Costa Rica.
Kathi still serves as an elected member of the Denmark-based International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims’ governing board and was one of the co-founders and officers of the National Consortium of Torture Treatment Programs. She also currently serves on the advisory board for the Barbara Chester Award of The Hopi Foundation.
Previously, she founded Lutheran Social Services of Idaho as well as served on the national boards of directors of Amnesty International and Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service as well as numerous local boards of directors. Kathi has twice testified in Congress, met with foreign ministry and United Nations officials, presented in national conferences and guest lectured locally, nationally and internationally. In 2020, she was inducted into the San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame.

Eva Pacheco barely spoke English when she volunteered at her children’s school in El
Cajon, California. She and her husband were firm believers that being bilingual was
important; they enrolled their children in schools where they were assured they would
receive bilingual education. They soon found out that that was not true. Her children’s
education and self-esteem suffered. Pacheco found out there were many other families
in the same situation. She soon organized other parents, informed them of their parental rights, and together they advocated for quality education for their children. Today, she is the Founder, Trustee, and Director of Facilities Expansion of Excellence and Justice in Education Academies – a model charter school in El Cajon. Pacheco credits her husband, family, the other parents and families – as well as her 13-year experience as an elementary and middle school teacher in Leon, Guajanto, Mexico for success. Eva Pacheco, the founder of EJE Academies is an experienced educator of over 30 years who has been advocating to ensure all children have access to quality bilingual education. She was born and raised in Mexico. When she moved to the United States, she quickly recognized the challenges the American education system posed for bilingual learners like her own children, especially those with limited resources. She was the Executive Director of EJE Academies Charter School since its founding over 15 years ago. Starting with just 110 students in makeshift facilities, the academy has grown to serve over 800 students today. EJE Academies (EJEA) is a TK-8th grade school that provides high-quality dual-language (English & Spanish) educational instruction, a nurturing learning environment, and a supportive community to its students.

Susan Hasegawa is a professor at San Diego City College and teaches U.S. history and Asian American history. She is also the past chairperson of the History and Political Science Department. Susan has researched and wrote on the Japanese American experience in San Diego for the past twenty-five years and curated numerous exhibits locally. Based on oral history interviews and archival photographs, her community history, Japanese Americans in San Diego, was published in 2008.
In 2021, Susan co-curated Call to Serve: Clara E. Breed & the Japanese American Incarceration for the San Diego Public Library. Susan serves as the resident historian for the Japanese American Historical Society of San Diego (JAHSSD) and is a former vice president of the organization. She has also written articles for the Japanese American National Museum and consulted on numerous projects concerning the Japanese American experience for Oxford Publishing, University Press of Colorado, and The Old Globe Theatre.
She has a master’s degree in history from SDSU and a master’s degree in International Affairs from UCSD. She grew-up in Hana, a small town in East Maui, but has called San Diego home since moving here for graduate school in 1989.

Explore the vibrant culture of Filipino fishermen and their deep connection to the sea. "Margarita Island'' retells ancestral Filipino wisdom about the relationship with "buwayas" or crocodiles. Through the artful use of audio, Marion Aguas captures the essence of the tradition of sharing our Filipino culture, in the same way that these myths and customs have been shared for centuries.
''I made 'Margarita Island' to continue the practice of sharing our Filipino myths and customs through oral storytelling. Through the audio in the film, I am able to pass down a piece of ancestral Filipino knowledge the same way that the protagonist hears about the story of buwayas from their father." - Marion Aguas
Marion Aguas (he/they) is a photographer and filmmaker based in New York. They cut their teeth in the streets, documenting and organizing with the Filipino National Democratic movement and the W.O.W. Project, a women, queer, and trans-led community initiative that uses art and activism to protect NYC Chinatown’s culture. In 2017, they started a portrait project of queer Asian-Americans, which inevitably led them into the QTBIPOC nightlife and drag scenes in New York. Informed by their own experience as a trans person of color, Marion uses their camera to immortalize queer joy as a form of liberation. They have shown work at The Wing Luke Museum, Red Hook Labs, the San Diego Filipino Film Festival, and MoodRing.

Asians are known to come from traditional communities that perpetuate honor in their family, ethnicity, and culture. When one fails to do so, it leads to what we call “Asian shame”. Consequently, individuals who feel that they have disgraced their kin hide and isolate themselves physically and emotionally from society to deal with it. Get to know more about “Asian shame” as San Diego choreographer and filmmaker, Trixi Agiao, talks about how secrets and shame have shaped her life in this week’s episode of Nemeth Narratives podcast.
Trixi Anne Agiao is a socially conscious choreographer and filmmaker using the digital guise of The Thoughtful Beast. Trixi creates work centered on fighting the stigma against mental illness and mental health. Utilizing visual storytelling experience as a dancer and choreographer, Trixi sets out to make videos that kinesthetically connect with her audience.

She holds the firm belief that creativity exists within every one of us and can manifest itself in many different ways. From a young age, she always formed deep emotional connections to works of fiction, particularly for the screen. With every story she tells, Martha hopes to leave audiences inspired in the way her favorite works have inspired her.

This episode is an excerpt reading of "Senseless" scenes 1-12, featuring the voices of the actors/actresses of the final film. "Senseless" was a short screenplay of the short film with the same title, written and directed by San Diego filmmaker Seth Dacio. The film is now about to do its film festival run.
"Senseless" is a true story about a 17-year old young man who goes through the physical and mental hardships of a personal medical crisis.
Seth Dacio, a Filipino American, started as a background actor at a young age on well-known TV shows such as “Lie to Me,” “Bones,” and “The Cleaners.” Over the years, he moved away from the acting aspect of filmmaking and moved towards creating his films. He always remains persistent in creating the best possible creative projects with over nine years of experience as a working filmmaker and five years as an FAA Certified Drone Pilot.

Marissa is a queer, Filipino filmmaker based in San Diego, California. Representation is powerful which is exactly why she decided to pursue a career in filmmaking. Though she has an experience in the director’s chair, her true passion lies in cinematography. Marissa is currently working on building her portfolio as a Director of Photography and hopes to continue her career in that direction. However, she continues to create videos in her own voice on Youtube and is currently developing a script that explores the themes of sexuality, acceptance, and identity as a Filipino American. When she’s not making films, you can find her training in various martial arts such as Kajukenbo, Muay Thai, and Boxing.
