The Heart Warrior Project: Recent Episodes

Jellis Vaes

I am Jellis Vaes, the host and founder of The Heart Warrior Project, and a sudden cardiac arrest survivor. I started this project to provide emotional support for fellow cardiac arrest survivors, after experiencing myself what a wild ride this has been, but also how little emotional support is offered. On the website, you can find practical articles to help you live a better life after surviving a cardiac arrest, and here on the podcast, I talk with fellow survivors about their journey to provide you with tips and advice. I hope you feel at home here, my fellow heart warrior.

Markus Lindgren, my first guest on the show from Sweden, shares in this episode his recent experience of surviving a cardiac arrest and the impact it has had on his life. Having survived it only but 8 weeks from recording, it’s all pretty fresh. Yet, the way Markus approaches it all, and has returned to doing competitive dog agility (more of that in the episode), is inspiring.Show notes about this episode: https://heartwarriorproject.com/cardiac-arrest-survivor-and-dog-agility-champion-markus-lindgren/____🧡Get Involved - Support The Heart Warrior Project🧡Note that The Heart Warrior Project is run by one guy, which is yes, me (Jellis Vaes). Dr. Sears is considered by many as the world authority on the psychological care and quality of life outcomes of patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).

He has published over 200 articles in medicine and psychology research literature and has well over 10,000 citations.

In 2021, Expertscape.com named Dr. Sears one of the top 50 experts / prolific authors in the world on implantable defibrillators over the last 10 years from amongst the 27,847 authors of the topic.

In this Q&A episode, I ask the questions that many of you sent me for Dr. Sears. We discuss a range of different topics: from dealing with depression, anxiety, and PTSD, to handling the fear of being shocked, making the outside world understand the difficult road we are on, and all the exciting advancements coming soon to ICD. And so many other vastly interesting topics Dr. Sears delves into in-depth.

Note: Upon review, Dr. Adesina realized that he mistakenly stated, 'The higher the LDL, the lower the risk of heart blockages.' He acknowledged that it should be the opposite: 'The lower the LDL, the lower the risk of heart blockages.' This is just to make everyone aware of the correction and ensure accurate information is communicated :).

In this Q&A episode on the podcast of The Heart Warrior Project, I invited board-certified cardiologist Dr. George Adesina to the answer questions you sent in.

Dr. Adesina currently practices as a cardiologist at the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in Houston, Texas, and has been doing so since 2018. He completed his residency in 2014 and finished a cardiovascular diseases fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Afterwards he served as an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas, before joining Kelsey-Seybold.

His expertise lies in diagnosing and treating heart diseases, including congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart rhythm disorders, and heart failure.

Surviving a cardiac arrest is something you don’t wish upon anyone. Truly. It’s only those who went through one who can state with absolute certainty that it can completely shatter someone’s life.

Therefore, once I read our guest for this conversation, Kevin Marcus Miller, had 12 cardiac arrests, I was shocked. As well as intrigued.

Shocked by how, despite all this, he has continued to fight. And intrigued by how he has managed to stay optimistic through this all and continues to build the best life he can with the cards that life has dealt him.

If, after this conversation, you would like to spend more time with Kevin, do check out his podcast ‘Setbacks to Comebacks Podcast’, where he chats with others about their comeback story.

While both have the same heart condition (with differences in severity) and found much support from each other in that, they also have their own personal challenges dealing with the heart disease and all the life changes it has caused (more on that coming up in the interview).

Jamey Bowden, a fellow heart warrior, survived a sudden cardiac arrest in 2020. Jamey had a cardiac arrest while he was driving. His wife, in a truly astonishing and heroic manner, somehow managed to stop the car and perform CPR on him. All the while, their kids were in the back watching all this happen.

Get Involved - Support The Heart Warrior Project

Are you a fellow cardiac arrest survivor, a heart warrior? Together with an illustrator, I have created some awesome-looking t-shirt designs for heart warriors. I have a few of the shirts myself, and they have honestly become my favorite t-shirts. I wear them (almost) all the time.

Also, we have created mugs where you not only drink your coffee, tea, or just about anything but also feel empowered doing it. They are printed with the ‘I Am a Heart Warrior’ logo on the front to remind you of how brave you are, and a gorgeous quote on the back to inspire you.

You can order your t-shirt or mug (or both) by going here: https://heartwarriorproject.com/get-involved/

If the t-shirt or mug doesn’t speak to you, but you want to support the project, we also accept donations. You can find more info on that by going to the same link mentioned above.
