In today's episode I go through the difference between an active weight loss phase (first 18-24 months post-bariatric surgery) and the maintainance phase (all the time after that!).
Bariatric surgery is no diet. It's no quick fix. Remember the habits and behaviours you're building in the first 12 months are what will carry you through successfully in the months and years to follow.
Work really hard on instilling these behaviours as habits and you'll notice the weight lost remains off long-term.

This episode is practical. Are you struggling to find high protein snacks after the surgery? Do you find the supermarket overwhelming?
In this episode, I go through how to pick a better protein bar, what to look out for, brands to look at (not sponsored) and whole food alternatives. It is all well and good to have protein bars, but consider the overall value of the food as well. I balance this by highlighting protein bars that are manufactured but then also whole food options that provide similar protein amounts and more micronutrients.
You'll want a notepad for this one or your shopping list!

Today we’re diving into a topic that affects many women who have undergone bariatric surgery—menopause and the potential for weight regain.
Menopause is a natural phase of life that every woman will experience, usually between the ages of 45 and 55, though it can happen earlier or later. It marks the end of menstruation and is characterized by a significant drop in estrogen and other hormones. This hormonal shift can lead to a range of symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances. But for many women, one of the most frustrating aspects of menopause is weight gain, particularly around the abdomen.
I go through several strategies to help manage this phase of life effectively. Remember, this is a journey, and it’s okay to ask for help along the way. Menopause is a significant transition, but with the right tools and support, you can continue to thrive.

This episode is a great reflective exercise to help you think about the way you have been living and operating from a food and lifestyle perspective, and identify what could be the causes of any weight stall or weight regain you might have had after bariatric surgery.
Weight regain is common - around 30% of bariatric patients experince it. However, how you choose to react to it, is the key here. You can bury your head in the sand, but ultimately, you're hurting yourself and might affect your results post-op.
Listen on to this podcast with a notepad for actionable steps on what and how to reflect on your current lifestyle to spot the gaps on why you might be struggling with your diet today.

Intuitive eating is a straightforward concept. It involves making peace with all types of food, unlike traditional diets that restrict or ban certain items. Instead of categorizing food as “good” or “bad,” intuitive eating encourages you to listen to your body and eat what feels right for you.
You might think this means eating whatever you want whenever you want, but that’s not the case. Experts explain that intuitive eating involves tapping into your body’s natural signals to determine when you’re hungry or satisfied.
By practicing intuitive eating, you also let go of the idea that you need to lose or gain weight to achieve a specific appearance. The focus shifts to choosing foods that support your overall physical and mental well-being.
It can be difficult to incorporate after bariatric surgery but by trying and taking a gentle approach you can learn what foods suit you and minimise foods that don't make you feel good. I go through how you can use it after the surgery and practical considerations to implement.

Bariatric Surgery is challenging - it's a time of growth. You may find yourself being challenged with the 'norms' you have always known and found it hard to change those old habits that you used to lean on to manage emotions or stress.
In today's episode, I am going through four mindset shifts you can make to help make the overall surgery process easier and save yourself heartache as you know you're not alone in the emotional growth post-op. If you are struggling further, please consider seeing a psychologist to help expand on this more in your own world. If you've just had weight loss surgery, calorie counting can be extremely unhelpful. When someone is struggling with weight regain, yes it can be helpful, and I speak about that here.
Calorie counting does not take into account your overall nutrient intake, your fluid intake, and can exacerbate your past history of yo-yo dieting. If this resonates with you, have a listen and consider tracking nutrients not calories.

This week I delve into some of the common myths and misconceptions I come across working as a bariatric dietitian.
It's common to think that this is THE THING to stop me from gaining weight ever again and thinking that this is the change that will stop "all my bad habits". February is Gut Health Month. This month I am focusing on your gut health after weight loss surgery. There is some literature around gut health and bariatric surgery, however more research is needed.
In this episode, I explain the basics of your gut. There is over 95 trillion species of bacteria in the gut from the mouth all the way through to the anus. Gut diversity has a strong influence on health and risk of disease. Struggling with obesity may mean that you have had a historically low diversity of your gut bacteria.
Weight loss surgery is a strong catalyst for change in the gut bacteria. The effects may not be sustained, which further research is needed. However, I question whether this has a role in weight regain after bariatric surgery.
I also provide you with three practical strategies that you can implement today to support your gut health.

GLP-1 Medications are arguably one of the most innovative weight loss drugs of our time. In tandem with bariatric surgery, they can be a fantastic combination to help you reach the goals you are aiming for.
However, we run the risk of it being another diet or a 'quick fix' if we are not concerned with what we are actually eating whilst on these medications.

Vitamin B6 is a water soluble vitamin that was thought not to build up in the body.
Clearly, it can. In recent years, more B6 toxicity has been reported and become problematic for many people. There are severe side effects.
In this episode, I go through what to look out for, how to diagnose and treatment. It is important to test, not to guess, so if you are experiencing these symptoms, get these tested and then a plan to remedy can follow. The deficiency symptoms are the same as toxicity symptoms, so try to test first!

A common longer time symptom or condition after weight loss surgery is reactive hypoglycaemia or post-prandial hypoglycaemia. It is different to diabetes in any form, but can happen due to the altered release of hormones after weight loss surgery.
Reactive hypoglycaemia is where the body releases too much of the hormone insulin after bariatric surgery. Due to the smaller portion of carbohydrates consumed after bariatric surgery, when too much insulin is released it can cause too much digested sugar to enter the cells.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include:
Today I go through what this condition is, how to prevent it through some dietary strategies and how to treat through diet. It is strongly recommended you seek individual advice from your own bariatric dietitian and medical practitioner to discuss treatment for your case.

Pouch resets have long been touted as an internet solution to obtaining the restriction that you once had immediately after bariatric surgery. It is a diet that often follows the post-operative diet of fluid --> puree --> soft foods then solid foods.
Some people find that it helps them get 'back on track' however for the most part, it tends to slip you back into the diet mentality, increases the risk of weight regain and reduces your confidence in picking foods that support your body.

Weight Regain is often caused by many factors. In fact, I did four episodes highlighting why weight regain can occur and those can be either in your control or not.
One thing that often comes back, it is just a matter of when, is old habits. These old habits might have triggered the weight to increase in the first place. And, over time, they do affect you so identifying and acknowledging these when they happen, will allow you to take control of these so they do not control your weight.
This week I go through which old habits tend to be the most common and how you can take charge over these by being aware of them, reflecting, implementing changes and refining those changes.
You are still in control of weight loss/regain. Don't let your habits undermine your great efforts!

When you think back, weight loss was seemingly effortless in the first two years after weight loss surgery. You ate your protein, you moved your body daily, you didn’t have hunger, and the weight just dropped off.
Then, all of a sudden, years later, you are left feeling confused and lost knowing that you have gained some or all of the weight back since your surgery several years ago.
Does this sound familiar?
And I bet that if you think back, no one told you what to do to maintain your weight once you got to your goal. All discussions were focussed on how to lose weight healthily, but no mention was made regarding life beyond this. Your surgeon may not have even told you that there is a possibility of weight regain.
Embarking on yet another weight loss journey can be daunting. Especially if you have regained weight after weight loss surgery.
Today we are going through what you might like to do if you have regained weight after weight loss surgery.

Weight stalls are very common after weight loss surgery. You cannot keep losing weight at the same rate forever. Often we only focus on the scales of what we can see, but we do not see the internal changes that are going on.
Our bodies take time to adapt to the surgery itself and the anatomical and physiological changes that happen (all of which we cannot see!).
Today we will discuss what is a weight stall, why they occur and how to get the scales moving again after weight loss surgery.

Success after weight loss surgery is classed by some as the number on the scale. But, weight loss surgery provides so many more benefits and non-scale victories beyond the number on the scale.
In today’s conversation, we are going to go through some non-scale victories that you might like to focus on instead of the scales after your weight loss surgery. We do know that just focusing on the scales can make you feel like you’re not doing enough or you feel frustrated, particularly because it is out of your control.
I encourage you to try reflecting on your own non-scale victories. Keep them in a place that you can see so when you feel despondent about the scale number, to remind yourself about all the victories you have achieved.

In this episode, I go through why hair loss occurs, how to manage it nutritionally and ways to encourage the hair to grow back.
I’ve put together a handy protein counter to help you reach the recommended minimum 80g protein for females and 100g protein for males. Click here to access it.

Sleep is absolutely essential to human life. Talk to any night shift worker or sleep deprived new mum. Sleep is critical for the body functioning; better mental health; better clarity and decision making and importantly, improving your food choices.
The recommendation for adults is 7-9 hours per night. Are you achieving this? In today’s episode we go through why sleep is important and how it can make a difference in reversing weight regain. I also provide some strategies to help you get a better night sleep.
As always, this is general advice only and you should seek our further support from your health professional if you feel like some of the nature discussed is a concern for you.

Drinking water after weight loss surgery is a difficult task. There are so many ‘rules’ and things to focus on after bariatric surgery, we often find that water tends to fall by the wayside.
In this episode I walk you through why water is key after weight loss surgery and how it can prevent weight regain; why does water feel “heavy” post-op, and strategies to make it easier for you.

This month I have dedicated two episodes to gut health. It is an under researched area especially in the lens of those who have had weight loss surgery. There are many ways to decrease the detrimental bacteria and increase the diversity and population of the positive bacteria.
Today, I will take the best strategies and break them down for you in this episode. You’ll learn easy ways to make sure you have regular bowel movements, improve the health of your gut bacteria, and ensure you get a diverse range of plants to improve your overall health.

Are you travelling or planning to travel in the upcoming holidays? They seem a fair way away, but it is always good to think ahead. This episode was inspired by one of my long-term clients that is travelling with friends and family that have had weight loss surgery.
Travelling after weight loss surgery is challenging enough, however throw in some difficult conversations about weight, goal weights and expectations of each other with the surgery, you have a recipe for a shame and guilt trip.
Today I break down how to navigate travel after weight loss surgery. I discuss aspects you might like to think of when booking and planning your trip. I also encourage you to remember that your body is unique and every one responds to the metabolic surgery in a unique way.

In this episode, I speak about a subgroup of nutrients called flavonoids. Flavio-what? You ask? Bear with me. These groups of nutrients are so potent in their ability to be anti inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-aging. Sounds good right?
Weight loss surgery significantly changes your gut health and bacteria population. I dive deep into the use of flavonoids as a way to change this gut bacteria to support your metabolism. Here is the Literature Referenced for this month’s content:

In this episode of the Reverse the Post-Op Regain Podcast, I discuss the importance of consistency in achieving health and wellness goals after weight loss surgery.
I explain that consistency is key to building momentum and making sustainable changes after weight loss surgery to achieve any goal. I go through strategies for developing consistency, such as starting small, focusing on self-discipline rather than motivation, holding oneself accountable, and being kind to oneself.
I recommended the book "The Slight Edge" by Jeff Olsen to further understand the concept of slow progress being still progress.
Remember, imperfect action is better than no action. Progress is still progress. Keeping consistent can apply to all facets of life, but will support you well with your goals after weight loss surgery.

“How do I prepare for my upcoming weight loss surgery?”
“How can I make my bariatric surgery successful?”

Are you confused about how to take control of your health after weight loss surgery? Monitoring your weight and diet is only one aspect but bariatric surgery can affect every single body process because what you eat is what you become.
Don’t forget to take some time to look after your body and monitor your health before something goes drastically awry. Think of it like taking your car to the mechanic. You don’t want to end up at the mechanic for the first time when something catastrophic happens to your car. This works the same way.

It’s that time of year again where we look at the new year with shiny stars in our eyes. The world is at our doorstep, particularly while we are on holidays and dreaming up how we are going to be, change, do this year.
How about, instead of all the wishy washy goals you may have set in the past, let’s take action and set you up for success this 2023?
Our conversation today goes through a reflection process through the previous 12 months, and where you want to achieve in the next 12 months. I give you five strategies to set yourself up for success that you can start today.
Take the time to reflect and plan for the next year. It’s an eye-opening process, but well worth it to be mindful of how you want to spend the next 12 months.

Put Down the Next Fad Diet and What to Do Instead
Happy New Year! It’s the New Year. And here comes the onslaught of diet culture advising us on what we should and shouldn’t eat for our “best body ever”. We know, yo-yo dieting decreases your metabolism by decreasing your muscle mass, and increases your weight over the long term.
Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery is the best tool we have to manage obesity. However, you are not immune from being targeted by the media and diet culture.
Our conversation today will explore how to identify a fad diet, consequences of fad diets, and their long term effects. I discuss what and how to manage your eating instead, without doing a typical ‘diet’. I also discuss how to include treats or indulgences as part of a sustainable approach to eating.
We also look into movement and how to not sign up for the gyms flash sales that happen at this time of the year.
I wish you all a prosperous 2023 and look forward to seeing you next week.

Mindfulness often feels like a “fad” or a “should do” or a “nice to do”. However, amongst our busy lives, we are often living on autopilot and not really taking stock of what we are doing and where we are going. We often just end up getting “there” then wondering where the last decade went.
Mindfulness can help you make considered choices and help you on your journey after weight loss surgery. It helps you be more aware of your dietary choices, reduces mindless eating and making choices that serve you.
Keeping with the holiday season theme, we can often eat and drink alcohol mindlessly at this time of the year. This episode dives into how to be mindful of meals and foods after weight loss surgery. I also discuss alcohol, effects of alcohol after weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery. I also go through a mindful eating script which is always a fun and interesting exercise to do.
I would like to encourage you to start applying some of these habits to your day to day eating habits and see if you notice more fullness, less hunger and more “restriction”.
Enjoy the episode.

If you are planning on changing your diet or lifestyle, holiday seasons tend to be the most difficult times to start this. My approach is that all foods are “allowed” and there are no “bad foods”. It sets you up for a more sustainable lifestyle, and allows you to have a life where you are not guilty or concerned about each morsel of food you have.
This episode is to help you gear up for the upcoming Holiday Season to banish guilt with these seasonal foods. The take home message is to eat well for most of the holiday season - ie. December/Start January, but allow yourself to enjoy your favourite foods on Christmas or Boxing Day and New Years Day. Then, go back to your usual diet.
I discuss some strategies to manage this time of the year in an effort to minimise the guilt that may be associated with this holiday season. From last week’s episode, we discussed having those challenging conversations with family and friends - remember there is a great resource here to download to have when tricky situations arise.

Obesity is the most challenging condition to manage as there is no cure. Bariatric or weight loss surgery is not even a cure, however it is the best strategy we have to alter the metabolism to challenge the body to reach a lower body weight.
Many of my patients have struggled with weight loss for most of their life. Even starting when they are as young as 10 years old. Starting off the dieting cycle like this, means that you need to get off this hamster wheel. Going through weight loss surgery is hard. It is probably the most challenging thing you’ve ever done. A fantastic support team to be there for you makes a world of difference.
What do you want to look for in a weight loss surgery support team?
Support comes in many forms, but these ways may help you keep to your new lifestyle.
