Sometimes it is easier to tell a small lie to your kids, than the truth. Like the Park is closed instead of the honest truth that you are too tired to go. Lying to our kids happens, we even do it when we feel like we need to protect them. We even do it when we are not feeling well by telling them not to worry or that we are fine.

In these moments it is important to remember that this form of communication is called Gaslighting. This form of communication teaches our children to doubt themselves, and this is why Radical Honesty is so important. Tune into this episode to get a deeper look into why we owe our children honesty.

Screentime is a question I get all the time as a pediatrician, and specifically how much screen time should my infant or young child have in a day, is the most common by far. Screentime is not a replacement for face-to-face time, nothing is, even with the greatest educational content out there, face-to-face time is crucial.

That being said, we live in a society where that is not always possible so I wanted to share the pro’s and con’s around screen time and how best to handle it

ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is something that I don’t believe is a disorder. I think we created a label for people whose needs aren’t adequately met by our existing educational and labor structures. No one has a deficit of attention or hyperactivity.

We break down here steps for managing ADHD, where our structures aren’t serving us and how people learn differently. ADHD is not something that needs to be cured, treated or corrected, rather it is what makes someone stronger, unique and valuable.

Are you a new parent, wondering how to introduce solid foods to your little one while fostering healthy eating habits? Look no further! Dr. Ryan shares his expert insights and advice on this common and sometimes daunting parental challenge.

He distinguishes between nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and empty-calorie options high in fats and sugars. Join me, Dr. Ryan, a compassionate pediatrician and a parent, on this week's episode of "Neighborhood Doctor," where we tackle a common concern faced by parents: recurrent headaches in their children. From teenagers to adults, headaches can be a disruptive and uncomfortable experience, but fear not, as I'm here to share simple and effective strategies to manage and reduce their frequency.

In this episode, we'll explore some key factors that play a significant role in headache prevention. Hydration is critical; many of us don't drink enough water, which can easily lead to headaches. Ensuring that you or your child are drinking a couple of liters of water a day can make a substantial difference. Sleep is another vital aspect, especially for adolescents and beyond. Prioritizing a regular sleep routine and getting the right amount of sleep each night (typically 8 to 10 hours) can significantly improve headache outcomes.

However, it's crucial to remember that not all headaches are benign. If headaches are severe, persistent, progressively worsening, or causing nighttime disturbances, seeking medical attention promptly is essential.

Tune in to this informative episode of "Neighborhood Doctor" to learn practical tips that can help you or your child bid farewell to frequent headaches and embrace a pain-free life. Don't hesitate to send in your medical questions for me to answer, and stay tuned for the next episode of "Boosting Our Voices" with my friend Ari.

Welcome to "Neighborhood Doctor," where I, Dr. Ryan, a dedicated pediatrician and father, am here to address the most common questions from my patients and their families. In this episode, we'll delve into the topic of managing the common cold, a frequent challenge faced by parents of young children.

Picture this scenario: you pick up your five-year-old from her second day of daycare, and she starts coughing and sniffling on the car ride home. Within the next few days, her symptoms escalate, with a fever, loss of appetite, and an overwhelming desire to sleep. Dealing with the common cold can be perplexing, but fear not, as I'll guide you through the best ways to handle it.

In this podcast, I'll share some valuable tips, including the use of teas with honey or other cough syrups (for children over one year old) to manage discomfort. We'll discuss why antibiotics aren't helpful for colds, and why avoiding cough suppressants and certain over-the-counter medications is prudent, particularly for young children.

Join me on "Neighborhood Doctor" as we navigate the world of child health and address your medical queries. Feel free to reach out to Boost Oregon online with any questions you'd like me to answer. And don't forget to tune in next week for another episode of "Boosting Our Voices" with my friend Ari

Welcome to "Neighborhood Doctor" where Dr. Ryan, a pediatrician and a dad, am here to address the most common questions from my patients. If you have an infant who seems to be crying all the time, making it challenging to get a good night's sleep, feed them, or even step out of the house, worry not. Babies cry to communicate, and in this podcast, we'll explore how you can effectively soothe your crying little ones.

In our episodes, we'll cover the fundamental reasons why babies cry, such as hunger or the need for sleep. But it's not always that simple. Babies, like older children and adults, may have various reasons for their tears. Perhaps they're feeling sad, angry, or irritated. Maybe they have an itchy rash, feel too hot or cold, or simply long for physical affection and attention. As parents, it's vital to respond to their needs, even if they can't express them in words.

I'll guide you through a checklist to help you understand why your baby might be crying and offer practical tips on managing common issues like hunger, tiredness, or discomfort. We'll also discuss the significance of holding, swaddling, rocking, and talking or singing to your baby, providing them the comfort and security they crave.

Subscribe now and join me on this parenting journey. Together, we'll create a more nurturing and harmonious environment for our beloved babies.
