Psalm 120 opens the Songs of Ascents—a playlist for God’s people on their journey to Jerusalem. This first song doesn’t begin with joy but with honesty: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me.”In this message, Pastor Eric Kuykendall reminds us:Calling out to God in distress is biblical.Expecting God to hear and answer is biblical.Lies and hostility surround us, but God’s truth and peace remain. As we walk through the Songs of Ascents together, Psalm 120 sets the tone: worship isn’t about pretending everything is fine—it’s about bringing our real selves before God and trusting Him.📖 Scripture: Psalm 120👤 Speaker: Dr. Eric P. If you’re in Christ, you already have an A+.
In today’s culture, the phrase “toxic masculinity” is often used to attack men and masculinity itself. But the Bible gives a different vision.

Online sports betting has exploded across America—$147 billion in wagers were placed in 2024 alone. While the Bible doesn’t explicitly forbid gambling, it does warn us that not everything “lawful” is actually helpful (1 Corinthians 6:12).In this message, Pastor Eric Kuykendall unpacks the dangers of online sports gambling and how Christians can faithfully respond. From addiction and debt to family harm and poor stewardship, the risks are real. But the good news? God’s Word points us to freedom. By saying no to what dominates us, we can say yes to accountability, discipleship, better stewardship, and the mercy that comes through confession.📖 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:12

Last summer, Christianity Today published an article titled, “Dallas Mourns a Summer of Pastor Scandals”—highlighting eight pastors in North Texas who stepped down from megachurches due to moral failures, including two nationally known leaders. It raised questions that strike at the heart of church culture today:
How did pastors become celebrities?
Why do we follow them so closely?
And what does God have to say about it?
In this powerful sermon from our Hot Topics series, Pastor Eric Kuykendall walks through 1 Samuel 8 to show what happens when we reject the King for a king like the nations. He also shares a hopeful reminder: Jesus isn’t just a good example—He’s the Good Shepherd, and He knows you by name.

What do a car inspection, an Apple Watch, and a report card have in common? They all provide an evaluation. Car inspections check for safety and function, Apple Watches track fitness and health, and report cards show academic progress. Evaluations like these matter—but what about evaluating our spiritual health? Earlier this year, nearly 400 of us completed a Spiritual Health Survey. Starting this Sunday, we’ll begin walking through what we learned—about ourselves and about our church. And we’ll do it with the same posture David expressed in Psalm 139: “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! In Mark 15, we see how people respond to Jesus in very different ways—some reject Him as King, others receive Him. One of those people is Simon of Cyrene, who was forced to carry Jesus’ cross. This chapter reminds us that each response to Jesus matters, and sometimes, what feels like a burden is actually a call.

If tables could talk, what stories would they tell? In Mark 14, we find two powerful scenes at two very different tables. The first table is at Simon the leper’s house, where a woman’s extravagant act of worship stuns everyone as she pours expensive perfume over Jesus. The second table is the Last Supper, where Jesus offers His body and blood to His disciples, even while betrayal brews in the room. These tables show both sacrificial worship and heartbreaking betrayal, and they both invite us to give, sacrifice, and receive the grace Jesus offers.

A great comeback story serves as a reminder of a profound biblical truth: even when you feel like your back is against the wall, there is always hope. The Apostle Paul experienced this truth firsthand when he was “burdened beyond” what he could handle. Perhaps you or someone you know is feeling weighed down by a situation or relationship, with the sense that there’s no way out—that all is lost. But there is good news: the message of Christmas is that there is hope available for humanity.

Here’s the good news: as a Christian, you’re part of God’s family—you are included! Life can feel like an uphill battle, leaving us worn out and wondering if faith makes a difference. Mark 6 invites us to see that, even in the darkest moments, God’s presence is steady and sure. We’ll look at John the Baptist’s story—a story of courage in the face of hardship—and find hope in Jesus’ promise to be with us when life’s storms seem relentless.

In a few days, Americans will choose their next President, a leader whose policies will shape the lives of over 330 million people. Every election matters, but this one feels especially tense. Both major parties warn that if their candidate loses, our nation’s democracy could be at risk. So, how do we, as Christians, respond in this anxious moment? We vote biblically and believe biblically!

In Mark chapters 5 and 6, we see Jesus performing three distinct miracles—each showcasing His power in a different way: public, personal, and private. But it doesn't stop there. Jesus then sends His disciples out, commissioning them to do ministry on their own, just as they had witnessed. This sermon unpacks the lessons from these miracles and explores how Jesus calls each of us to step out in faith, trusting Him to work through us as we serve others in His name.

If you could attend a MasterClass, what subject would you choose, and who would you want to teach it? In Mark 4, Jesus offers a powerful lesson on the Kingdom of God. As you join the crowd and His disciples, you hear Him share simple, everyday stories—parables that reveal how the Kingdom of God begins and grows. Just as Jesus invited His first listeners to respond, these parables challenge us to reflect deeply and take action today.

In this sermon, Jesus challenges the Pharisees by breaking the boxes they place around others. He offers grace to the outcasts, like Levi the tax collector, calling them into new life while the Pharisees plot against Him. Levi’s decision to leave everything behind and follow Jesus shows the life-changing power of stepping into a new life with Christ. Jesus shows that no one is beyond His reach.Eric P. Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a disciple of Jesus when He walked the earth? The Gospel of Mark gives us a glimpse of what His disciples experienced in just 24 hours. They saw a new type of teaching, demons being cast out, and many healings. But they also noticed a surprising rhythm in His life. Let’s explore how this rhythm relates to our lives and to those around us.

Mark’s Gospel is widely considered the first and fastest-paced account of Jesus' life. Mark begins with a bold declaration: Jesus is the Son of God who has come to dwell among us. His account is filled with urgency, calling readers then and today to decide how they will respond to this Jesus. In this first message of our series, we’ll see how John the Baptist prepared the way for the Messiah and how Mark’s Gospel challenges each of us to follow Jesus with our whole lives. How will you respond?

The scene is the glorious throne room in heaven, the elders and angels sing praises to the Lamb who is worthy because, “you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation…” God’s heart has always been to bring His salvation to the ends of the earth, and He has communicated His purpose from Genesis to Revelation. Who am I?” and “What am I to do?” are two of life’s most important questions. Thankfully, the Bible speaks to questions like these, especially in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. With conciseness and clarity, Ephesians helps us discover our identity and purpose in light of the gospel. The letter to the Ephesians is like a one-two punch. It’s a combination of belief and behavior, doctrine and duty, and faith and practice meant to challenge us to live out the eternal truths of God in our everyday lives.

We often talk about two kinds of people, like early birds versus night owls or cat lovers versus dog enthusiasts. But there’s truly only two types of people in the world: those who are 'in Christ' and those who aren’t. However, being 'in Christ' isn't just a phrase; it's seeing the world, ourselves, and others in a whole new light.

How can we have a respectful and loving conversation with someone about abortion? It's not a term found in the Bible, so how can we answer questions regarding women's rights and when life begins with confidence?
We live in a country that has convicted an individual for murdering both his wife and their unborn son (remember the trial of Scott Peterson) and has also permitted over 900,000 unborn babies to be aborted in a year. Is that not confusing? So how should we as Christians respond? We'll look at answers to these questions as we consider the issue of abortion, which some have called “the moral issue of our day.”
When I was young, I was taught to avoid two particular topics at social gatherings: politics and religion. Well, sorry mom, but we’re shattering that old saying. Truthfully, we will be going back to the basics of the Bible and discussing our roles and responsibilities as Christian citizens. God actually has quite a bit to say on the matter, so I look forward to unpacking lots of verses with you.
Have you ever known someone who decided they didn't want to be a Christian anymore? Maybe someone you went to church with growing up, or even a friend or family member? Perhaps you have even considered stepping away from the Church at some point in your own life. The term "deconstruction" has become popularized with the idea of "leaving the faith." We will try to understand deconstruction, discuss some of the reasons why people who have grown up in the Church are deciding to leave their faith, and then we'll look at a Biblical response to those around us in this position. My study of this subject has me excited about the opportunity for the Church and also alert to the challenges we face.
When you look at your schedule or calendar, do you start to get stressed out? Do you wonder how in the world you can get it all done? At the end of day, all you have the energy to do is flop on the couch and watch TV! Believe me, I know. With work, kids’ activities, friends, errands, and just trying to get dinner on the table every night, it can be a challenge! Well, going nonstop and never taking a break is not really what God has designed us to do. We will be looking at why the Sabbath should be an important practice in our lives today as believers. I look forward to jumping into God’s Word with you!
Eugene Peterson wrote that work is “an area where our sin is magnified or where our faith matures.” To help us learn how our work can be a place where our faith matures, we’ve invited a few individuals to join us to share part of their stories. These individuals strive to use their businesses to bless others and glorify God. So, if you desire for your place of work to be a place where your faith grows, join us as we continue our teaching series Workship!
Have you ever hired a construction crew to do some work for you? I imagine most homeowners have – especially ones like me with a low skillset. How awesome would it be to have a crew to whom you could say, “You don’t need to send me a detailed bill; just tell me how much it costs and I’ll pay it.” That’s trust. And trust is built upon a foundation of integrity. In the Book of 2 Kings, we’ll see such an account. It’s inspiring. And it’s a great example of the work ethic we’ll find in Ephesians 6:5-8.
What motivates you to work? Rewards, money, family, profits, recognition, competition, promotions, purpose…? If you own a business, are employed by a business, run your home, or are a student in college or high school, one or more of these may drive you to be wildly productive in your work. But what if there is a higher motivation? Regardless of the kind of work you do, join us as we continue our preaching series Workship to discuss this motivation and its potential impact on your work.
What is the point of work?

If you tried to guess what the last word in the last book of the Old Testament is, you might be surprised. It’s not the “happily ever after" ending that you are accustomed to seeing in your favorite book or movie. The last word is “curse”. This is because God’s people needed a wakeup call, and God used Malachi to deliver it. Despite the last word in the last book of the Old Testament being a word of judgment, Malachi offers a message of hope.
How were you disciplined as a child when you misbehaved? Different parents and different generations take alternative approaches to discipline. In my era, one of the worst things a kid could hear was, “Just wait ‘til your father gets home.” Well, the Book of Zephaniah is the ultimate “just wait ‘til your father gets home” book. God’s punishment is coming. But... in the end times, there will be a remnant of believers. And that is both our challenge and our charge – to be a part of the remnant. I look forward to sharing this challenge and charge with you.
You are likely familiar with the story of Jonah and his preaching assignment in Nineveh that led to a shocking spiritual awakening, but do you know the rest of the story? Normally it’s not wise to major on the minors – in life, relationships, government, business, etc. But that’s what our church family will be doing over the next several weeks – as these “minor” prophets are really not minor in any way other than sheer volume. Maybe you’re familiar with Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel. But are you as familiar with Micah, Nahum, Zephaniah and Malachi? That’s where we will be heading, and I look forward to enjoying the journey with you.
What does it look like to overcome and not be overcome? That’s a question we will tackle this Memorial Day weekend as we finish our teaching series from Romans 12 by looking at the chapter’s final verse:
Romans 12:21, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
Chuck Swindoll famously said, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” I don’t know about you, but when people are nice to me, it’s pretty easy to respond in kind. But when people are unkind towards me... well, that’s a different story. Still, how we respond to those who hurt us is our high and holy calling from God’s Word. That’s what we get to discuss together as we continue our march through Romans 12.
As we celebrate another senior class, I am reminded of Moses. What Moses did during his life mattered. Whether you have a senior or not, you have a chance to influence generations after you and point them to Jesus. Join us, not only to honor our seniors and pray over them, but also to see how Moses made his "dash" matter, and how you can make your "dash" matter too.
This Mother’s Day, we will study a very fitting verse found in Romans 12:13. We hope you will join us and many others in memorizing it this coming week:
Romans 12:13, "…contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality."
We’ll look at this verse and a somewhat unfamiliar woman mentioned in the Bible who embodied it. Despite being lesser known, the Scripture calls her “worthy” and we can all learn what practicing radical hospitality looks like from her example.
One of the best books I’ve read in years is Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken – the biographical account of Louis Zamperini. It was made into a movie, and the image that I’ll keep with me for the rest of my life is when he holds a plank above his head for a miraculously long time. That, beloved, is “persevering in tribulation”, and that’s what we get to discuss in our new series, RADICAL. Check out Romans 12:11-12 and see if you can commit it to memory.
Who’s up for a challenge? I bet you are. As part of our upcoming teaching series, Radical, we are going to challenge ourselves each week to memorize verses, or like the Old Testament says “treasure” them in our hearts. Our first memorization challenge is Romans 12:9-10.
Love must be free of hypocrisy. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor.
If what Americans watch on TV is any indication of our collective interests, then it stands to reason that we are interested in criminal investigation. NCIS, Law and Order: SVU, Criminal Minds, etc. are some of the most popular drama series of our time. What all of those shows have in common is the pursuit of facts – verifiable truth that can help them close the case. We get to look at a fact that turned the world upside down and “closed the case” on life after death.
My sons and I recently went to a college baseball game. We had a super time together, and as we watched the game, I explained to them the “walk-up” song. It’s a song a player from the home team chooses to play over the stadium speakers as he walks into the batter’s box. Well, Jesus had a couple of walk-up songs. One on Palm Sunday as He entered Jerusalem on a donkey, and one at the end of Revelation that is sung before His return. Our hope is that this song will stir in us a “confident expectation” in God that despite our past or our current circumstances He will fulfill what He has promised.
If you were able to choose your ideal surroundings, where would you go? The mountains, the lake, the beach? Who would you be with? Family, loved ones, friends? Well, God being God, He gets to do just that – for all eternity. And His surroundings teach us a few things about the fullness of His character and the fulfillment of His plan.
It seems we live in a world driven by headlines. Unfortunately, the headlines on the state of the Church and Christians are neither glowing nor encouraging. However, there’s a headline in Revelation 7 that tells another story – a story of redemption. We are going to look together at this headline and be encouraged to stand up and sing out as followers of Jesus who are part of this redemption story.
Have you ever written a song – or thought much about what goes into the process? As a general rule, new events, new moments, or new occasions often provide the inspiration for new songs. Such is the case in Revelation 5. The Apostle John is given a glimpse into a “new occasion” in heaven, and as a result, a new song bursts forth.
The book of Revelation is recognized by many for the seven churches, the end times, and bizarre symbolism, but one of the lesser-known features of Revelation are the songs. Simply put, these songs are treasures! So, for several weeks we are going to uncover these songs in a series we are calling Hymns of Heaven. Our hope for this teaching series is that the songs in Revelation awaken us to treasure God among a culture that values lesser things.
The world is filled with famous left-handed people. Paul McCartney, Keanu Reeves, Mark Zuckerberg, and even Oprah are all supposedly left-handed. In the Bible, there’s only one specific individual who is given this unique description: Ehud. While he may not be famous, his story is pretty epic. If you’ve ever felt “unusable”, his story will inspire you. I’m excited to share with you from Judges 3 about our final hiddenhero in this series.
Recently, two former Major League Baseball players; Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds, were denied their last chance to become members of the league’s Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, this is partly how they will be remembered. There’s also the late Betty White who is being remembered as “America’s Beloved Grandmother” for her storied acting career. Have you thought about how you want to be remembered? A loving husband? A wonderful mother? A successful business leader? Here we will look at another one of Scripture’s hidden heroes who’s remembered for her great faith. Her faith not only changed the trajectory of her family’s life, but ours as well.
During Catalyst: Marriage Edition we talk about marriage and several hot topics within marriage such as communication, finances, sex, difficult situations, and more!
Don’t you just love rooting for the underdog? There’s something about seeing a person overcome all the odds to gain the victory. The Bible is actually quite full of famous underdog stories: David versus Goliath, Gideon versus the Midianites, Moses versus Pharaoh, Daniel versus Babylon, etc. But there’s a hidden one found in Judges 11 that I’m guessing not many believers are familiar with.
Some of you know that my daughter is pursuing her PhD in Chemistry (I know, I know... she got her mamma’s brains). She had to take an entire class on how to prevent combustible situations in the lab. It takes knowledge, discernment, and carefulness, and so it is in life as well. This is exactly what our first hidden hero, Abigail, modeled for us in 1 Samuel 25. She prevented a combustible situation that literally saved lives (as well as the reputation of the future King). I’m excited to share it with you so we can gain a little more wisdom for our own journey.
What do The Pilgrim’s Progress, Letter from Birmingham Jail, and The Letter to the Philippians all have in common? They were all written during a lockdown. John Bunyan wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress from a prison in Bedford County, England, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote Letter from Birmingham Jail from a prison cell in Alabama, and the Apostle Paul wrote Philippians under house arrest in Rome. All three of these individuals leveraged their lockdown, and this is our topic as we conclude our teaching series from the book of Acts. So, whether you’ve been with us from the beginning or joining us for the first time I look forward to being with you as we learn from the Apostle Paul how to make the most of our lockdown-like moments.
I find these words from William Cowper’s poem fitting:
The dearest idol I have known,
Whate’er that idol be,
Help me to tear it from Thy throne
And worship only Thee.
Do you resonate with Cowper? I sure do. His words capture the tension I feel between wanting to be fully devoted to God and yet struggle holding on to idols. Well, if there are days you feel the same tension, then make plans to join us as we study Acts 19. This chapter is not only one of the most interesting in entire New Testament, it’s also filled with motivation to guard ourselves from contemporary idols and serve the living God.
meant that they were unable to mint coins. When General and statesman Oliver Cromwell was approached about this, it was explained to him that the only silver available was found in the statues of the saints in the churches. Cromwell then famously said, “Well then, melt down the saints and put them into circulation! Let's look at the story of a young man named Timothy who was “put into circulation.” I’m confident we will all draw strength and inspiration from it, and I look forward to sharing it with you.
What if the Thirteen American Colonies didn’t gain independence from Great Britain? What if Germany won World War II? Life in the United States would be much different for us as American citizens if one of these alternative histories had occurred. As Christians, life would be extremely different if a brief letter found in Acts 15 had never been written and sent approximately 2,000 years ago. Thankfully, it was penned and delivered! As we gather Sunday, we will look together at this pivotal letter and appreciate its wonderful implications for the Church, for the gospel, and for you.
If you’ll think back with me to your high school history class, you’ll remember that the world has experienced several major turning points over the years: the fall of the Roman Empire, the rise of the printing press, the Industrial Revolution, and the Cowboys making the playoffs this year. OK, I added that one. But if we were to look back at the history of the Church in the same way, we’d also find some major turning points – such as the one we’ll examine in Acts 13.
2022 is here. What are you feeling? Are you nervous, excited, or maybe a bit of both? Whatever you’re feeling, we want to invite you to begin the new year with your church family on the first Sunday of 2022. We will look together at a verse found at the end of 1 Corinthians 16 that is unfamiliar to many, but timely for us all. It speaks to what’s ahead; both the opportunities and the obstacles, and I look forward to sharing it with you.
What is your first memory? When you think about that memory what are some things that come to mind? Join us as we will look at the power of our memories, and how God wants to use them in our lives. As we close out the year and reflect back on everything that has happened, we must remember God's goodness to us.
Are you familiar with the metric called the “Total Fertility Rate (TFR)”? Very simply, it is the average number of children a woman would have if she survives all her childbearing years (between 15-49 years old). For a nation to maintain its population, it needs a TFR of 2.0. But in most of the developed world today, that number is below 2.0. Apparently, because of how messed-up our world is, many people are choosing not to have children these days. All I know is... I’m sure glad that when God looked down upon this messed-up world, He still chose to have a child. And this Sunday, we’ll ask and answer the questions about what difference it makes that Jesus was born... God with us.
How would you finish the statement, “God accepts me because…”? I recently came across this statement and became curious to know how my children, friends, and others around me would finish it. Truthfully, I should be more than curious about their response because it reveals how they view God and their relationship with Him. So, as we continue our teaching series Greater Than, we invite you to join us as we tackle a passage of Scripture that helps us discover why God accepts us.
Have you ever had to move and say goodbye to some close friends? The Apostle Paul did. After spending three years in Ephesus, he developed some close relationships with the people there – particularly with the Elders of the church. So, in Acts 20, it came time for him to say his final goodbye; and, in those parting words, we are reminded of the true spirit of Christmas.
Do you ever wonder, “What is God’s will for my life?” If so, given the seminars, books, and consultants that address this and similar questions, I would say we aren’t alone. The good news is, we don’t have to be in the dark. The Bible speaks about God’s will for us, and I look forward to studying this with you. As we study 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 together, we will look at God’s will for us and discuss the desire and discipline to pursue it.
I love Thanksgiving! I mean, what’s not to love about it? Faith, family, food, and football. Those are some of my favorite things in life! However, in the Bible, thanksgiving was never relegated to just one day a year. Rather, it’s an every day command. We see this modeled well for us by King David in Psalm 138. That’s where we’ll camp out on Sunday in preparation for this special holiday week.
Do you know a "backseat driver"? It’s a person who sits in the backseat telling the person in the driver's seat how they should be driving - slow down, turn here, go faster. A person with a reputation of being a “backseat driver” means they like to control something that is supposed to be controlled by another person. Well, in Acts 12 we find a “backseat driver” who thought he was in ultimate control. Unfortunately, this “I’m kind of a big deal” leader and his overly confident attitude led to his downfall. This Sunday, we will not only look at the rise and fall of King Herod, but we will also look to see how the Word of God continued to grow and multiply.
Have you ever noticed that just about all of the romantic movies coming out of Hollywood are about how couples first get together and fall in love? I guess that’s what sells tickets, but rarely do you see a movie about a couple battling through the challenges of life together in order to remain true to each other. While that might not be the message coming out of Hollywood, it is definitely the spirit of the message coming out of a city called Antioch: “remain true to the Lord” (Acts 11:23).
Watching the Guinness World Records’ longest domino wall fall is pretty impressive. Initiated by the fall of the first domino, 42,173 more dominoes twist and turn 131 feet for 6 minutes and 12 seconds until the final domino falls. We often refer to this as the domino effect because “one event initiates a succession of similar events” (MWD). In Acts 10 we see a similar effect when one man’s decision leads to many other decisions. I look forward to studying this story together and seeing how our one life can influence the lives of many others around us.
Did you ever have an opponent who became your teammate? I did. His name was Wayne. In Junior High, I played basketball against him, and he was good! But then in high school, our schools merged together and we ended up on the same team. I went from hating that guy to loving him! I think the disciples of Jesus had a similar experience with a man named Saul. His transition from enemy to teammate wasn’t a smooth one, but thankfully there’s a hidden hero in our story: Barnabas. Together we’ll find some inspiration and encouragement as we glean from this great story of our faith in Acts 9.
If you were responsible for growing a business, organization, or team, what would you do? Leadership and growth experts would encourage you to focus on issues related to staff morale, customer needs, and social media. However, the growth and expansion of the Early Church happened in an unexpected way. Join us as we look together to see what led to the growth and expansion of the Early Church and what we can learn from their example.
Have you noticed that when we get really excited or filled with anticipation, we tend to stand up? We do this all the time at sporting events or concerts (and maybe even at church!). We’re going to look at a story in Acts 7 that tells of how Jesus stood up from His throne in excitement and anticipation. What would compel Him to do that?!?!
Have you ever said “no”, so that someone else could say “yes”? This question was recently posed to a group of leaders, and it reminded me of the story in Acts 6. In this chapter, conflict was rising within the early church and to address it, one group of individuals said “no” so that another group of individuals could say “yes”. The results were remarkable!
I wouldn’t consider myself a true student of American history, but even I am familiar with Samuel Adams and The Sons of Liberty instigating the Boston Tea Party. Americans took courage from their act and three years later, our Declaration of Independence from England was born. Historians describe such an act as civil disobedience. Well, if there is such a similar act in the New Testament, it’s found in Acts 5.
Have you ever been in a hurricane? I have, just once. It was an experience I will never forget. The howling winds which blew sheets of rain sideways is an image captured in my mind which illustrates the potential power of nature, and of God. It was the wind of His Holy Spirit which was powerfully blowing through Jerusalem in the first century – through the Church of Jesus Christ. Here we get to see what, indeed, comprises such a great church.
Interruptions. We’ve all experienced them, but what if interruptions turned into something else? What if interruptions became opportunities? This is what happens in Acts 3 when two of Jesus’ followers are stopped by a man on their way to a prayer meeting. What seemed like an interruption turned into an introduction for spiritual maturity and much more.
I had the joy and privilege of being there for the birth of my children. Those are definitely two of the most joyous days of my life (and I’ve never been so proud of my wife!). There’s just an unparalleled wonder and excitement about a birthday – welcoming new life into this world. Well, we get to witness the birthday of the Church in Acts 2. And it too is a day filled with wonder and excitement.
Social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok tend to show only the “ups” of our lives. That post of the beautiful vacation spot, that picture of the well-defined abs, or that post of the uplifting Bible verse, but rarely, do we show the “downs” of our lives on social media. This reminds me of the book of Acts. Many are familiar with the “ups” in the book of Acts. The moment the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, the time Saul met Jesus on the road to Damascus, or the first time the word “Christian” was used to describe those who followed Jesus. However, like our lives, the story in Acts has its own share of “downs.” As we begin a teaching series on Acts, we will see that even in the midst of the ups and downs, the early church was empowered by the Holy Spirit and emboldened by Jesus’ promise to advance the Gospel. Now it’s our turn!
People of my generation and older remember that significant moment in world history when the Berlin Wall fell. It symbolized the end of tyranny and oppression by communist regimes and their totalitarian ideologies...or so we thought. Over the past few decades, there are several indications that our own great nation has moved more in that direction. So, what is the threat and how do we respond as followers of Jesus?
Transgender. Transsexual. Gender identity. Gender dysphoria. This terminology is becoming more common and popularized in today’s culture. As Christians, learning how to process and respond to these issues from a Biblical perspective matters. We will seek to understand what transgenderism is, how the Bible speaks to it, and what our response as followers of Jesus should be.
If you watch the news at all, then you’ve certainly heard about Critical Race Theory. It’s definitely a “hot topic” in our culture right now. And, unfortunately, it seems to be causing even further division (even in the Church). So, what is “CRT”? What’s good about it? And, what’s not good about it? What does the Bible have to say about it?
With temperatures getting into the 100s this week for the first time this summer, it seems fitting to begin our Hot Summer Topics teaching series. Our aim in this series is to address hotly discussed issues in our culture and to train us how to think about them Biblically. Why is this important? So that we might engage in respectful and loving dialogue in order to promote God's truth in our lives and circles of influence. We kick off the series with the topic of mental health.
We look forward to wrapping up the “His Word, My Story” series. We have received encouraging feedback from many of you regarding the messages from our pastors around Scriptures that have had a meaningful impact in their personal walks with God. In the same spirit, we will also share a couple of passages today that have had tremendous significance in the course of our lives. Our hope is that this series encourages you to allow God to write your story according to the truths and help offered in His Word.
We will be best friends forever! If you are like me, you probably wrote that in someone’s yearbook many years ago. So, did that happen? If you are like me, that is probably not a friendship that stood the test of time. How do we have lasting, meaningful, and Christlike friendships in our lives? Here you will hear from two longtime friends, and look at Proverbs 27 to see how you can be a Christlike friend.
When was the last time something came out of your mouth, and you know you should not have said it? Or when was the last time your words spoke grace, love, and truth to someone who needed to know how much God loves them? It’s interesting and concerning at the same time both examples are spoken from the same mouth! This week, we will look at James 3 and what the Bible says about the tongue and how our words reflect our spiritual health. I love the book of James; the author writes with such passion and deals with topics head-on.
Beginning to follow Jesus. Working your first job. Graduating high school. Getting married. Buying your first house. Having your first child. Your youngest child graduating college. Retiring from your career job. These are all examples of important, life-changing moments in our lives. Before these important moments, a leader, a loved one, or a friend may speak words of wisdom into your life that will shape who you are as a person and how you will live in that next season. As we begin this new series called “His Word, My Story,” we are going to take a look at Deuteronomy 6, where Moses gives important wisdom to the Israelites regarding how they should live as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. Jesus cites this passage when He shares the greatest commandment in Mark 12 – so I think you’ll find this is an important passage for us as well!
Do you remember when was the last time you thought about life being eternal? It’s been said that “we are so captivated by the allurements of the world, that eternal life fades from our view.” I don’t know about you, but this happens to me. Like a fish attracted to a shiny fishing lure, I get easily distracted by the world’s attractions and temptations. And so, as we conclude our teaching series on the kingdom of heaven, let’s look together at one final parable where Jesus sets the reality of eternal life front and center.

When my daughter was young, we bought her a metal detector. She wanted to search for treasures buried underneath our property (she came up empty, unfortunately). I think there’s something inside of us that gets stirred up when we think about discovering treasure. It’s the stuff of dreams, and of movies. It also makes for a great parable. That’s what we’ll get to discuss this Sunday as we look at the parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price.
A few years ago, a friend of mine got me into cycling. What started as a 10-12 mile ride turned into 25 miles, 30 miles, and before you know it I was encouraged to do a 60-mile race. I remember wanting to give up several times on that route. At about mile 45, my friend could see my dilemma and encouraged me to keep going. He even had me talk about other things to get my mind off the struggle. Before I knew it, I was coasting (and fuming in) at the 60-mile marker and finish line to cheers of encouragers. I felt like I won the Tour de France. Jesus is aware of the struggle of His companions on this ministry trek. On their part, there is a failure to see ‘what is about to come.' Jesus uses a seed of grain to cast a big picture of hope and sets their gaze ahead, not behind. May you struggle well.
Recently my kids and I have been reading Encyclopedia Brownbooks. Each chapter of these boy detective children novels involves a mystery that is meant to be solved by the reader. Fortunately, if one is unable to solve the mystery the “Answers” section in the back of the book reveals it. You might be thinking, “What does this have to do with the kingdom of heaven?” Well, after the disciples hear Jesus tell a parable about the mystery of the kingdom, they ask Him for help in understanding it, and that is what we unpack Sunday. I can’t wait to share the parable of the weeds with you. It’s one you may have heard or read before, and while the meaning of the parable may surprise you, it’s the application we must not ignore.
Back in my younger years, I loved to windsurf. Riding over the ocean waves was exhilarating! One day however, after falling into the frigid Atlantic Ocean, I learned a valuable lesson: sound travels much better over water. Everyone back on the beach was able to hear what I said - and it wasn’t... holy. In Matthew 13, Jesus creates a similar scene where everyone on the beach is able to hear His words, and... well, they’re holy.
What do soil, weeds, a mustard seed, leaven, a hidden treasure, a pearl, and a net all have in common? Jesus spoke about each of these things to help His disciples understand the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven. Over the next several weeks Pastor Sherm and I invite you to join us for a new teaching series called “The Kingdom of Heaven is Like...” As we walk through the stories Jesus shared in Matthew 13, our hope is to be a people that value God’s kingdom above all and to discover ways to participate in seeing His kingdom come to earth. To kick off this series let’s start by asking “what is the kingdom of heaven?”, “when does it come?”, “where is it?”, and “why does it matter today?” We look forward to seeing you Sunday in-person or online.
Our hope for this series has been to encourage and challenge us to be a people of faith that advances the Kingdom of God in a culture riddled with fear and anxiety. With the book of Joshua as our guide, we’ve discovered that the source of our strength and courage is tied to the promise that God is with us wherever we go. During our final week of this study, we'll see how Joshua led the Israelites by example when making his personal commitment to God public.
I love sunrises and sunsets. They’re glorious... and there’s a rhythm to them - a fixed cadence that God established on the fourth day of creation. If that 24-hour cycle were ever to be interrupted, that would be the stuff of legends… and Joshua chapter 10 is the stuff of legends. I’m excited to share this true story with you and how it still impacts us as God’s people today.
I recently came across a book titled, The Story Behind (this is not a book endorsement). The book aims to share the history of some things that we use regularly. I was familiar with many objects like bubble wrap, paper clips, and trampolines, but I was not familiar with the story behind these things, which was fun to read and got me thinking. Many of us are familiar with the story in the Bible when the people marched and the walls of Jericho tumbled down, but few are familiar with the "story behind the story" of the fall of Jericho and why it matters for us today.
Several years ago, our staff went on a retreat. As part of our team-building exercise, we did a challenge course. When we were presented with the final challenge (crossing from one platform to another on a wire), I think we all said, “There’s no way!” But eventually, through faith and teamwork, we made it. Over 3,000 years ago, the people of God faced a major challenge – crossing the Jordan River (in the spring!). I’m sure at first many of them said, “There’s no way!” But God made a way and – through faith and teamwork – they made it across. This true story still speaks words of faith and hope to us who believe today.
You know fear is not hard to find. Our world is riddled with it. And although fear is not hard to find, it is hard to keep fear from lingering in our minds and hearts. Like uninvited guests, fear has a tendency to stay too long…way too long. So, as people of faith, how do we fight the fears we face while at the same time advancing the kingdom of God? Well, that’s the heart of our new teaching series from the book of Joshua titled Fear Not.
Beloved, Easter is upon us, and we are excited to gather with you and your family. This year's Good Friday and Resurrection services will center around the "Christ Hymn" found in the Apostle Paul's letter to the Philippians. We will focus our attention on the cross and crown of Jesus, we will take communion and witness baptisms, we will hear an amazing testimony and more...
Who is Jesus, really? That’s the question we’ve been examining in our current series, Jesus Unfiltered. It is an important question to answer because there are many opinions about who Jesus is. With the Gospel of Mark as our guide, we’ve read stories that highlight unique and unexpected encounters with Jesus. This Sunday, we close out this teaching series with a story that shows a side of Jesus not seen anywhere else in the gospels. Some may find it a bit over the top, but we must not ignore this side of Jesus.
Have you ever been to the mountains? No one stands at the foot of a mountain and feels big. Mountains are just enormous. In the Bible, they often symbolize great obstacles or challenges. But God says that through believing prayer, He can move them. That’s how powerful He is; and that’s how powerful our prayers can be. This Sunday we’ll look at a rather curious encounter Jesus has with a fig tree and how He turns that into an object lesson on believing prayer.
What does it take to be great at something? In whatever field, many times being great at something means putting in lots of hard work. It takes hours of practice and work to craft a skill or talent that people would consider great. What does it mean to be great in God’s Kingdom? Jesus’ disciples have a conversation with Jesus about what it means to be great in his kingdom. As you can imagine, it was not what they expected.
According to pollster George Barna, “76 percent of Americans believe in heaven, and 71 percent believe in hell. But only 32 percent believe that hell is ‘an actual place of torment and suffering.’ And, while 64 percent believe that they will go to heaven, only 0.005 percent believe that they will be sent to the flames.” So, beliefs about heaven and hell are still widespread in our country. But, what’s the truth? And, what difference does it make in our lives today?
Traditions. Can you think of traditions that you or your family celebrate? Maybe you watch a favorite movie like Elfor It’s a Wonderful Life during Christmas, or your family goes on vacation to the same beach every summer. Maybe each person in your family gets to pick a favorite meal on their birthday, or every year you read through the Bible from beginning to end. Traditions are memorable and important, so you might be surprised when you see how Jesus responds to a group of leaders who are all about religious tradition. Although shocking, His response can serve as a healthy reminder for us about what matters most…a sort of “wake-up call” to check our motives in our pursuit of living like Jesus.
Even though we were told by meteorologists to prepare for the epic weather we’ve had this week, as a long-time Texan, I just didn’t expect it to be that cold. In life, sometimes things happen that are unexpected. Such was often the case with Jesus and His ministry 2,000 years ago. Whenever I read through the Gospels with fresh eyes, I’m always amazed at the things He said and did which were unexpected.
One of the most important questions Jesus posed happened when He asked His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Now, if we asked culture, “Who is Jesus?” we would likely get a variety of responses. That’s because there’s the hipster Jesus, the feminist Jesus, and the homeboy Jesus. In animated shows like Family Guy, there is the divorced, action hero Jesus who drives a convertible with Chris Tucker riding shotgun. In the Simpsons, there is Jesus who turns water into a Bloody Mary and occupies heaven with Sponge Bob Square Pants and Buddha. In the popular movie Talladega Nights, there’s tiny, infant Jesus, and there’s the Jesus who was married to Mary Magdalene in Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code. Although the vast majority of adults agree that Jesus was a real person who actually lived, only 48% believe He did not commit sins like other people. So who is Jesus really? That’s the question we want to address in Jesus Unfiltered, a new teaching series from the Gospel of Mark.
William Clay Ford Jr. is the current Executive Chairman of the Ford Motor Company – making him the 5th generation of the Ford family to serve in the leadership of this iconic American company. The Fords are modeling for us all how to be intentional in passing on what we know to the next generation. That’s what we get to discuss this Sunday. And may I say, what we as believers in Jesus have to pass on is way better than anything coming out of Detroit (although the Ford Raptor is really cool, just sayin’).
In this verse, I believe Solomon is saying that it’s better to go to a funeral than a party. That may sound strange, and I’m sure many would disagree with him, but it's attending the funeral of a family member or close friend that makes us give serious thought to how we are living out the rest of our days on earth. If you’re like me, and I imagine you are, don’t you want to make the most of your remaining days?
Harvard University conducted a rather infamous study over the course of nearly 80 years. They monitored the lives of around 700 people in order to evaluate their personal happiness over the course of their lives. What was their conclusion? Warm, close relationships are the key. And God’s Word has great instruction for us about those.
What if someone told you that you were made for God? Let’s be honest. Would you find yourself feeling joyful and thankful, or maybe unqualified and unworthy, or maybe even indifferent and disinterested? Regardless of how you would feel, I hope you'll make plans to join us this Sunday either in person or online. We'll kick off a new sermon series called Made For This that will help us align ourselves with our God-given purpose. Because when you and I DON'T live for the purpose that was intended, everyone misses out. The One who created us doesn’t get what is deserved. You and I struggle to find our true identity. Finally, the ones around us miss out on the numerous blessings that we share as we live the way God desires.
