Everything is moving so fast in today's retail landscape. New platforms, generations, technology, all colliding at once. It's easy to get caught up in the hype. When you do, you start making decisions for the short term instead of for the long term gain. You start implementing tech just to be first, instead of remembering your brand's why. Gen Z may be using ChatGPT over Google so you optimize for GEO (Generative AI Engine Optimization) but when models change and all that work is no longer relevant, now what? Optimize for the new model?
James Connell, COO & CMO of Loulou Lollipop, a baby lifestyle brand, joins us on this episode of The Longer Game to shed light on why brands have to be building for inevitable change amidst the headwinds of technology advancements. His take on tech and AI advancements doesn't mean the business runs itself. It means he is able to digest his week, what was accomplished and action items, in a more efficient way, giving him brain power to focus on the big picture items, all while riding his bike. Put on your helmet, launch your AI notetaker, and get ready for an amazing ride through the life of a brand in 2025.

You have a problem. Your software subscriptions are seeing record signups but you're also losing people at an alarming rate. You've got investors breathing down your neck to grow your 2 year old SaaS company. Somethings missing, you just can't put your finger on it. You end up hiring a CX/UX Consultant, like our friend Nick Cawthon, Founder of Gauge, who joins us on this episode of The Longer Game. You find out you don't have the right feedback loops in place. Because of this, nobody is telling you your software functionality isn't quite what you thought it was. People like it but they're having to do manual work that should be intuitive in your design and your next new feature? They just don't need it. Listen in to hear how Nick handles these kinds of situations and why you always need to know where the closest coffee shop is. Grab your coffee, close your eyes, and enjoy the view.

Ever heard people say "the proof is in the pudding." Well, they're wrong. The original saying is "the proof of the pudding is in the taste." Think about it. If the pudding doesn't taste good, ain't nobody buying it. Pierre Jamet, Head of Sales at the innovative tinned fished company Fishwife, talks to us on this episode of The Longer Game about why sampling is at the core of a successful CPG business.
Tasting the product with a personalized connection builds relational capital and verifies that your product is high quality. After hundreds of demos each month over the course of years, this has proven out for Fishwife and their team. We also talked team collaboration, chili oil with Fly By Jing, and what your fish will look like inside of one of their tins. Spoiler alert: it's a fish. Grab a tin, a fork, a drink, and some crackers. This ones gonna be tasty.

What if people stopped limiting themselves from starting something because their idea isn't quite ready? What if people actually tried new things instead of worrying about fear of failure? Well, welcome to the world of entrepreneurship. That's exactly how you get started. We've been raised to hear "No" so often that we begin to believe we can't do things. The reality: we CAN do things.
You don't have to be a professional or super experienced to start. Hamish McKay, CEO & Co-founder of Order Editing, did just that. After working customer service for a year at a company, he asked team members what took the most time out of their day. He discovered there was a simple solution right under his nose. Then, he went out and built that solution.
On this episode of The Longer Game, we dissect why people don't take more chances, why they need to, and how to deal with the outcome, be it a flop or a huge success. Don't wait until you're in the perfect spot to listen to this one. Put in your earbuds and press play. Now.

Founders these days are building businesses for different reasons. Many of us have our basic needs met, according to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, which provides a unique opportunity in time to build things that reach closer to self-actualization. And yet, the goals remains the same: grow or get profitable. Caroline Grace, Founder of Product & Prosper and retail expert, joins us on this episode of The Longer Game to share how there is nothing new under the sun but how the flavors of businesses are changing. She helps us dispel the myths of retail, like greater distribution means greater sales and profitability. The reality? It doesn't instantly create those things and often just adds more complexity to your current business model. Most brands that launch in retail aren't profitable for 18-24 months at minimum. So what are the keys to the retail kingdom? Simple. Capability, Credibility, and... Grab a BFY soda and discover that last C.

Every brand knows they need to reach their target audience. Not every brand is willing to ask the right questions to figure out how to do that. Two of the most overlooked customer bases are right under our noses: liberal and conservative. Whether it's fear of offending people or unwillingness to see things differently, not asking the questions to find out someone's world view only creates headwinds. When you better understand your consumer, you can actually find a better way to engage them. Chris Peterson, Author of Red & Blue Customers, joins us on today's episode of The Longer Game to discuss how to leverage world view data in everything from marketing to product development. This isn't a political thing but we certainly have a tendency to make it seem that way. In a world where every headline is unnecessarily polarizing, Chris helps us understand that we're all human and if you can put aside being judgmental of one another, you may just get to know those humans better. Let's face it, marketing is hard. And the right information can create tailwinds for our brands. So why wouldn't you want to do everything in your power to create more tailwinds? Grab a slice of humble pie and listen to us talk about how 67% of marketers are liberal, while 68% of sales people are conservative.

We've come a long way in the Amazon ecosystem. What used to be the Wild West, where people were just launching products with no clear guide on how to be successful other than trial and error, has now become more of an established retailer. Their ads network is massive, they're fees have gone up, and they've received a ton of regulatory pressure causing them make wide and sweeping changes across categories from UPCs to reviews, account suspensions to compliance certifications.
Noah Wickham, Sales Director at My Amazon Guy, has seen it all. With a decade of exerience, he's witnessed Amazon go from burgeoning to booming. And he welcomes the changes. We talk all things Amazon. Just two agency guys, shooting the breeze, talking fees. We couldn't help ourselves. Off we go into the jungle!

Flying cars, robots that make you breakfast, meals in pill format to make sure you get all your nutrients. That's what we thought the future was going to be. Who could have ever predicted that something like a Software Engineer would even be a thing? Nobody. Ai is in the same predicament right now. Getting into a new retail partner is an exciting opportunity that also comes with unique challenges. Do you know what retailers are looking for? Are you prepared to be placed on the shelf? And what will actually grab your consumer's attention? Craig Phillips, National Account Manager at Great Northern In-Store, joins us on this episode of The Longer Game to give brands a head start on nailing it with retailers. Brands don't know what they don't know. If you've never planned out a display for Target, how possibly get it right? That's why working with a strong partner that knows the channel well is so crucial. Sometimes service providers get treated more like a pariah than a plus-one at the party. The reality is brands and service providers both need each other, so let's place nice. Grab some soju and let's cheers to partners working well together. Clarity trumps persuasion. And yet us humans have a tendency to overcomplicate things. Ecommerce sites? Filled with text. Product descriptions? All about the brand owner and not the customer. These kinds of observations seem obvious or overly simplified from the outside looking in but brands constantly overlook them because they're so focused on generating more revenue only. Matthew Stafford, Managing Partner at Build Grow Scale, enlightens us to the problems he regularly sees when sites lose customers due to over-complication. Mindset has a lot to do with it. Are you invested in the solving the problem for your customer? Or are you focused on how great you look as a brand? Why are we asking all these questions in the show notes? Because questions bring clarity. They get people thinking. Grab a blanket and a cup of coffee, or don't, and get ready to better understand how to generate the right mindset that leads to greater results.

Humans are amazing creatures. We love stories. We're driven to find meaning. And yet many people find themselves handling the most mundane tasks. Tasks they do over and over again that often lack much purpose other than to "get the job done." New technology in automation and Ai serve a role to get the mundane tasks done, freeing up humans to do more of the things they love. Satej Sirur, Co-Founder & CEO of Rocketium, joins us on this episode of The Longer Game to share how he is helping brands and agencies do just that. Awareness is the first step. After that, you measure the gap from where you are to where you want to go. Finally, take action and use technology thoughtfully in your solution. Put in your headphones, do some dishes, and get ready to be more efficient.

Beyond revenue, you can look deeper at your customer base to determine path to purchase, capture lost audiences, and even boost ads to audiences with higher affinities. Joon Choi, Senior Vice President of Sales at Xnurta, joins us on this episode of The Longer Game to spill the tea on everything. Joon was actually at Amazon when they launched Sponsored Ads. Crazy, right? We discuss and frame the Amazon ads world before diving into the weeds of leveraging AMC to supercharge your media plan. Ready, set, advertise.

Entrepreneurial spirit is something that seems to be innate in some people, while others don't have it. Not everyone is called to lead either and that's okay! We need all types of people to run effective businesses. That's something our guest Nathan Hirsch, lifelong entrepreneur and owner of several companies including EcomBalance, knows a ton about. Nathan shares his early experiences in entrepreneurship selling books on Amazon and how that's lead to owning and growing multiple companies today. Even though he isn't a bookkeeper, Nathan understands the importance of keeping clean books. Brands often sell on multiple channels so not knowing which one is driving the most profitability can come back to bite you. That's where immaculate financial statements come into play. From early riser hustler to dad owning a portfolio of companies, Nathan invites us into his journey. You ready?

RoAS is a powerful metric: until it's not. When App Tracking Transparency got rolled out with the updates to iOS 14, RoAS suddenly dropped. Advertisers couldn't see to whom their sales were attributed. As the dust settled from the shakeout, new ways to measure ad effectiveness emerged. Enter MER (Marketing Efficiency Ratio). Also known as blended RoAS, MER has become the new gold standard in assessing the performance of ads. Is it possible to do good AND make money? Can you actually have a positive impact while growing a business? My guest on today's episode, Keith Hartnett, CEO of Better World Goods, thinks so. And we tend to agree. Keith's experience in selling on marketplaces and running an agency has shown him that making change requires you to be involved. You can't win in ecommerce or life if you don't play the game. We also dive into the realities and facades of agency life. In a social media world where everything gets divisive really quickly and we focus on the positives only, the reality of agency life is it's difficult. Not everything is a W and you will inevitably come up against problems. Intentionally hiding the difficulties shouldn't be the norm. Being willing to be authentic will go a long way and can actually provide you with credibility. Want to know more about how to run an agency with integrity? Listen to Keith's story.

Amazon hasn't always been "Amazon." Nobody could have fully imagined the way it would take over the ecommerce ecosystem but here we are 20-something years later and Amazon is straight dominating. Many people in the current ecosystem started small, Host included, making people who say Amazon killed small businesses dead wrong. My guest today on The Longer Game, Ryan Burgess, Head of Growth at the ad optimization and analytics platform Intentwise, did just that. Not old enough to get a "real" job, he started buying products wholesale and selling them on eBay. Then came Amazon. 10 years later here he is leading companies to success on Amazon along with other ecommerce platforms, helping them track and take action on customer intent signals. Join us as we geek out on all things Amazon and discover our similarities live on camera.

Brick & mortar retailers are evolving and Tom Burgess, President of the Fintech company Snipp Interactive, came on The Longer Game to dive into the current state of retail evolution. For the longest time, Retailers had data from loyalty programs and didn't know how to leverage it, other than tracking purchase habits. They were actually scared of it. When they figured out how to wield this power, they created a behemoth; enter Retail Media Networks. Leveraging their own ecosystems, Retailers started advertising to their consumers directly and brought brands along with them, somewhat to the brand's dismay. While it helps by actually getting visibility and revenue, they bemoaned because spending feels like a "tax." While RMNs have seen success, they're starting to hit audience caps, requiring more ad inventory. Want to find out where this is going? Take a listen.

Selling products online is easy. Or it used to be. But selling is just the start. You then have to build emotional connection with the consumer to get them to come back and buy your product again. Otherwise, you're caught in what our guest on this episode of The Longer Game, Ben Leonard, Founder of Ecom Brokers, calls the Fish Bowl Hamster Wheel cycle. Famsters, a cross between a fish and a hamster. While they may be imaginary, they are exactly what business owners become when they don't think brand and are just reaching for their next sale. It's a never ending cycle that lacks sustainability and ultimately leaves the business owner wanting more whenever they go to sell their business, which is exactly what Ben helps ecommerce brands do.

Agencies often get business wrong. Why? Because they focus on growth at all costs and push their employees and team members beyond their limits, which leads to them eventually burning out and clients becoming dissatisfied. George Reid, the Founder of the Amazon Ad's Agency Georges Blog, has decided to go a different route. The world of advertising on Amazon has continued to grow in complexity. While George keeps pace with those new levers being added, he has decided to grow by focusing on developing and caring for a strong team that leads to better client success. When most agencies double down on fast growth, which often isn't sustainable, George is okay to grow slowly and do it well. Meet the most laid back of self-proclaimed coffee snobs who also has a slight taste for pain in running ultramarathons.

Trouble finding good talent? Welcome to the club. The whole freelancer concept is incredibly powerful in it's flexibility and potential but finding the right person who can actually do what they say they can is no easy feat. The amount of markup on those freelancer's fees can also mean that brands end up being misled on the level of knowledge of said freelancer. Needless to say, there is room for improvement. Jai Dolwani, CEO of The Starters, a curated freelancer marketplace with vetted ecommerce talent, knows the pain of this process and is out to right the wrongs he experienced as the CMO at Winc, the well known internet based wine club. Pour some wine, swirl your glass, and open up your pallete to new ways to solve problems in the world of ecommerce.

By now it should be clear that running a brand is not an easy task. And brands sometimes make it harder on themselves. They think short term. What is my RoAS? Can I get away with basic creative? The problem is those short term fixes prevent them from seeing the long term growth they really desire. Agencies can help but when they can't deliver on the promises they make in the sales process, it makes it even harder for those brands to really win. Co-Founder and CMO of Webtopia, Jessie Healy, joins us on this episode of The Longer Game to share her insights from the brand side that led to her moving agency side, creating the "anti-agency." Does this strike your curiosity? Press play and let's begin.

Being an entrepreneur means you start solving a problem and just figuring it out. As time goes on, you often end up in a much different spot each year in order to keep the company growing. In order to excel in that role as the leader, you have to be able to reinvent yourself, time and time again. And the reality is, many people simply don't want to do that. Will Nitze, Founder & CEO of IQBAR, a brain and body nutrition company, joins us and shares why having a background in psychology, neuroscience, and government may just be all you need to build the next CPG company.

Finding great partners is a pain. How do you know when someone is just trying to close you vs. actually being able to fulfill their promises? Is going with the cheapest price point really the best idea? Kristina Mertens, Head of Business Development at Packshack, is giving us the inside scoop on why finding a 3PL partner can be so difficult. Some of her advice: you have to do your homework and you get what you pay for. We talk not just about fulfillment but why we think getting to the bag in eCommerce is NOT the most important thing. If you like Bavarian beers and want to grow your brand without choosing the wrong partner, you're in the right place.

Retail is not dead people. It's actually very alive. If 20% of sales are happening across e-commerce, where do you think the rest of those purchases are happening? Yes, it's in an actual store. Brands in the DTC space have had a ton of growth but as those brands mature, retail is the way they can really build legs. 1REC CEO Andrew Neelon joins us on Episode 9 of The Longer Game to talk about just that. Community is at the core of retail and Andrew is helping us better understand how to rebuild communities within the retail space. Looking to grow your brand into retail? This is your episode.

Consumer research one-way legacy brands have iterated more intuitively with products and won in the past but e-commerce brands have been able to iterate quicker in the past decade, which is one reason growth has soared. John Li, Co-Founder of PickFu, has created a tool that has allowed both types of brands to get to the yes, no, or maybe much quicker with consumers, and it was sort of an accident. Moving fast is a necessity of retail today, especially with the volume of information available and the speed at which we can access that info, so buckle up and get ready to move at the speed of 1.2 gigawatts on this week's episode.

How you make your products, when you order them, how much you order, and how you get them to fulfillment centers or the end consumer is a core process in the retail environment and yet it's something that brands routinely struggle with. Do this inefficiently and you've got poor cash flow. Do it well and you maximize sales while keeping yourself liquid to be flexible as a brand. Richard Prasojo, CEO of AiStock, a software that gives brands more power over inventory resulting in better cash flow, has much to say on why the Product Supply Chain should be one of the sexiest things in your business. Nailing the basics never gets old and we lean into that concept on this episode of The Longer Game. The Longer Game is a podcast focused on leaning into the trends and advancements in retail so brands see a clearer path to success across ALL channels. Every business starts with an idea. And it's easy to get jazzed up about that idea, so much so that you've forget to properly plan ahead for what you're going to need to make that happen. We're talking capital and runway. In this epsidoe, the 2nd most popular breakdancer off Wall Street, Kenny Jen, and I talk about what brands need to think about when prepping to launch and how you can succeed. Going big isn't necessarily the answer. In fact, in may be the opposite of that. Kenny's vast experience in everything from his current role of providing CFO Services to Consumer & Retail brands to product creation and retail strategy for Cannabis brands in LA give him a unique perspective that's hella fresh.

A common theme among food & beverage entrepreneurs, as well as in almost any industry, is settling on the "Just For Now" branding that gets you by until you make more money. Do you start going to the gym once you lose 10 lbs? No! You get your ass in there and start doing the work and the results come later. The other problem with this way of thinking is it gets you "Just For Now" results, i.e. don't expect your brand to be successful if you aren't willing to invest the time and money into it that is necessary. Ainsley Moir, the Founder of Healthy Food & Beverage Group, joins us to share her extensive knowledge of creating successful CPG food & beverage brands and why the struggle to fight off shiny object syndrome and play #thelongergame with your brand is real. The Longer Game is a podcast focused on leaning into the trends and advancements in retail so brands see a clearer path to success across ALL channels. The lessons she has learned, along with our host Michael, show you how steep the learning curve is when you get into business. Variables are the theme that runs throughout the conversation with Veena Giridhar, the CEO of salesBeat, an AI-driven platform that helps brands generate better efficiency with their inventory. When a customer gets "cheesed off," as Veena diplomatically puts it, how does that affect the consumer journey? The factors that alter that journey are numerous but let's simplify this; the consumer may not be back to that store, hurting your chance at building brand equity with them. The journey is now even more complicated with the mixture of in-store and online purchasing. Let's get into it.

Brands sometimes want a quick answer to growing and generating more revenue. Unlike Dollar General, most brands in retail take time to grow. James "Saywhatsales" Buckley explains why these misaligned expectations in retail lead to having a false sense of hope, which creates confusion, has you playing the chance game, and ultimately why "hope is not a strategy." The energy on Mr. Buckley is off the charts. He's got dope knowledge on sales, interacting with people, and is genuinely fun to be around. This episode rocks.
About our guest:
James' mission is to help sellers realize their full potential. He works to show them their real worth as the tip of the spear. He has had the pleasure of interviewing the best minds in sales and creating content that elevates the sales profession every day.

People buy with their emotions. They buy what they vibe with. If consumers aren't feeling it, don't expect revenue to grow. And what about revenue? How can connecting with a consumer on a raw level actually help you generate revenue? Are those two things related? Erik Kiker, Chief Messaging Officer at tolovethebrand.com, knows how to connect the two and never skip a beat. We go deep into the psyche of how brands are sometimes inadvertently turning consumers off because of the discouraging messages they're sending out. Messaging makes a difference. With Checkpoint International, they've templated the processes for sourcing and are leveraging the incredible quick postal system in China to their advantage. Listen in to hear how Oliver gets his food delivered to him during quarantine and why these guys are onto something when it comes to growing your brand.

Retail has drastically changed since the beginning of the pandemic, where e-commerce saw a huge influx of growth. This has forced brands to have to be agile in order to stick around. Brands can no longer sit on one channel and focus on dominating there alone. I speak this week with Destaney Wishon, CEO of BetterAMS, an advertising partner and service provider for brands on the Amazon marketplace, all about that change and how it's affected the brand's decision making, even giving us a peek behind the curtains of what BetterAMS has done to remain relevant.

In this episode of the Longer Game podcast, we visit the world of pop-up shops. Once the nucleus of retail, pop-up shops have since lost their prominence and appeal. However, recent market dynamics suggest that the days of open-air markets, bazaars, sugar dates, figs, and pistachios aren't behind us at all. In fact, they seem to be making a comeback. That's what retail expert, Stephen Brooks discussed with us on the show today.

In-store retail is a tough place to work. Long hours, a miserly wage, angry customers, and high customer service goals are characteristic of the job. In fact, anyone who has worked in retail knows there is a feeling of shame associated with the role. But why is that? Aren't retail employees the face of the store? Isn't the store's success hinged on their daily interaction with each customer? Join us as we speak to Ron Thurston, a retail expert, on how retail employees can find their pride.

Episode 15: Do You Know Your Audience? Localization and Why You Shouldn't Sell Fluff In Germany
Games that are funny and topical here in the US are not necessarily going to be hilarious in a place like say Japan, think Cards Against Community and other crazy games. Localization is a necessary part of success in ecommerce and retail in general. Languages, cultures, and interests change wherever you go so you have to think like that local country thinks as a brand. Jana Krekic, CEO of YLT Translations walks us through how to think and adjust our mindset effectively.

About our guest:
My name is Jon Tilley, and I am an entrepreneur.
I am also a realist. I like to be optimistic and work towards my goals, but I'm not naive about the obstacles that stand in my way.
Before starting my own business,I spent 15 years working as an account director & strategist for some of the top digital agencies in Johannesburg, London, and Los Angeles.
Then, I began my entrepreneurial journey in 2014 when I launched multiple private label brands on Amazon--all successfully.
Inspired by this success and the new flexible, restriction-free, and limitless lifestyle that came with it, I co-founded ZonGuru, an Amazon FBA tool suite to help more sellers achieve the same.
ZonGuru gives sellers easy-to-use tools to perform product research, listing optimization, and monitor business metrics. With its easy-to-use interface and robust, accurate data, ZonGuru brings customers the most in-depth analysis possible to help stay on top of business trends.
My vision is to become successful and happy with myself and those around me. But this is only possible with the support of others who believe in me.
My plan is to keep momentum by making decisions and staying focused on what's important because, as the saying goes, “life is meaningless until you give it meaning."
