This episode, Chris sat down with Blue Bridge Project founder, Jennifer Humphries. Jennifer lives in the Tri-Cities community (Kennewick/Pasco/Richland, WA) and volunteers her time building bridges between law enforcement and the communities impacted by drug use, gang violence, and distrust. Jennifer shares that she was a drug addict for years and "trained up" a generation of police officers (LOL). Even after becoming sober, Jennifer didn't trust the police. That was until Detective Liz Grant engaged Jennifer in a different way that showed care and respect. This one conversation started an eventual friendship that was grounded in trust. Jennifer figured, "Where there was one, there must be more," and continued to give other law enforcement officers a chance. Some officers earned her trust while others reinforced her previous mindset of an "Us versus Them" mentality.
Chris and Jennifer spoke about the challenges that hijack police - community interactions from having good outcomes. This included drug use, street life, past trauma, PTSD, pride, and more.

After a rough summer involving PTSD, inpatient, and retirement, Jaimie and Chris have learned new habits to help them understand each other better. In this episode they will share how to actively listen to your partner. Here is the framework to their new listening habit:
1. One speaker, one listener
2. Listener allows the speaker to talk
3. Listener repeats what they heard the speaker say
4. Listener empathizes by identifying the emotion they hear the speaker feeling
5. Speaker affirms or corrects what the Listener heard
6. Listener asks the speaker if they have anything more to add
7. If Speaker has more to add, go back to step 1... OR
8. Switch rolls and start back at step 1.

This week, Chris and Jaimie discuss big, enormous, life altering, decisions. Whether you are part of the first responder / military families, or if you had a traumatic event in your life, Chris and Jaimie encourage you to PAUSE before making any big decisions. When we have experienced stressful events, our stress-brain takes over and causes our decision-making brain to go off-line. We need to PAUSE big decisions until we can get our pre-frontal cortex back on-line able to weigh the pros and cons of the big decision. Chris and Jaimie offer up some tools they use to help their brain return to its normal state.

On Travis's website, he writes, "In 2016, I experienced what I now know to be a life-changing call. For five years after the call, I never sought appropriate help and I was slowly self-destructing within. As the years and calls went by my cup was reaching capacity and in 2021, I was brought to my knees. Thankfully I was put in touch with a therapist who specializes in first responder care and I began the journey of healing."

This week, Chris sits down with US Army reservist, Lt Col Lisa Jaster. Lisa Jaster is an American soldier, combat engineer, and one of the first three women to graduate the elite United States Army Ranger program in 2015. One of the most difficult combat training courses in the world, Lisa was the first reservist to complete the course. She graduated at age 37, while the average trainee age is 23. Lisa, an athlete focused on strength training and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, has a deeply rooted understanding of the importance of perseverance through continual progress and growth, as well as an ingrained respect for camaraderie and selfless service stemming from a noteworthy active-duty career (including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan).
Prior to receiving her esteemed Ranger tab, Lisa worked as an engineer with Shell Oil in Houston and an Army Reserve individual mobilization augmentee with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Her background in both the military and corporate worlds allows her to connect with any audience to create a memorable experience. Lisa initially was commissioned in the Army in 2000 after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point and returned to the reserves in 2012 after a 5-year hiatus from serving. She volunteered for combat training when she discovered the Army Ranger course was being opened to women for the first time in 60 years as a U.S. government experiment to see how women would fare in the notoriously brutal program. Lisa is the recipient of numerous military accolades including two Bronze Star Medals and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Lisa left active duty in 2007 and started a family and civilian career with Shell but returned to the Army as a reservist in 2012. Lisa holds a BS and MS in Civil Engineering. She is currently a partner in The Talent War Group – a management consulting and executive search firm where she focuses her efforts on training management teams, executive coaching, and keynote speaking. She also works with Leading Authorities, LLC as a keynote speaker. She recently released her book, Delete the Adjective - A Soldier's Adventures in Ranger School.

This week, #EvilCrusher Nic McKinley joins Chris on the podcast. As an Operative who served as a Country Chief for a Special Unit within the CIA, Nic witnessed not only the epidemic of child trafficking within illicit markets, but also the unrealized opportunity to apply his understanding and training to influence this global crisis. As Nic began to work with experts to better understand the problem in the United States, he found it impossible to turn a blind eye. As a result, DeliverFund was officially established as a 501c3 in October 2014 and our counter human trafficking organization, focused on ending sex slavery in the United States got to work.
Nic spent 11 years in US Special Operations as an Air Force Pararescueman prior to being recruited to the Central Intelligence Agency. Due to his highly specialized training and experience in both special and intelligence operations, Nic has a firm understanding about these illicit, illegal markets and has the highest levels of training to effectively combat them.

This week, Chris and Jaimie talk about lowering our expectations in marriage and life. Sometimes, we build up an event so big that it is almost impossible to meet our expectations. Instead, we should exercise the disciplines of dating and communication, knowing that it may not go perfectly. Be patient with the process. Consistently date your spouse. Consistently exercise good communication skills and the dynamite dates and break through conversations will happen.

On this bonus episode, Chris shares some thoughts on incorporating new disciplines into our lives. Habits are often formed without thinking. Most challenges in life come back to bad habits or failure to follow through on good habits. Living a disciplined life takes hard work, follow through, and accountability. Chris's challenge to the listeners is to identify one micro habit to begin in 2023. Then implement the disciplines necessary to be successful.

This week, Chris sat down with the founders of 484 Hero, sister and brother team Cierra McCartney and Daniel Gardner. Chris and Jaimie have been friends with Cierra since 2005/2006 when Cierra and Jaimie worked together at the Everett (WA) YMCA. Cierra's husband, Daniel McCartney was finishing his enlistment in the US Navy and had dreams of becoming a police officer. Daniel realized his dream, serving as a police officer in Hoquiam, Washington, and Pierce County, Washington. Daniel and Cierra had three sons, loved God, coffee, and CrossFit. Then on January 8th, 2018, Daniel died in the line of duty, serving his community. As part of their healing process, Cierra would take the boys to Daniel's gravesite. Their tradition was to bring flowers and a white chocolate mocha, Daniel's weekend treat. On the third anniversary of Daniel's End of Watch, Cierra wanted to change things up a bit. She added money to a coffee card and told the baristas that all cops got free coffee, in memory of Dan. Coffee with Dan began. Now, through 484 Hero, Cierra and her family want to express their appreciation to police officers around the country, one cup of coffee at a time. This week, Chris & Jaimie unpack an active conversation that they have not completely resolved. They introduce a military tactic that also applies in marriage. The tactic of "Cover Me" is extremely important in the military and in civilian law enforcement. Military members and police officers depend on each other to cover danger areas while they are moving. In marriage, we depend on each other to cover each other, to have each other's backs. However, sometimes our competing wants and needs, as well as different perspectives, causes conflicts.
