I most often start a story with a cool premise. A concept that comes down to me out of the aether that I am extremely excited about, and a story is born. The characters, however, usually stink. When I was going into my fourth draft of #ODUM I was doing a ton of research on character arcs, story arcs, and series arcs in order to build in what I knew my story was lacking.

In doing so, I looked into so many of the same types of outlines, relatively the same story beats, just phrased or arranged in a different way. While I do consider myself to be a "plotser"--that is, both a "plotter" and a "pantser"--I knew I needed to give myself some sort of structure to tell a more complete story.

Hello Lovelies, and welcome back to the podcast.

For authors, social media is a great tool for connecting with readers and marketing their books.

Authors can use social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to promote their work by sharing news about upcoming releases or events that they’ll be attending in person. They can also post photos of themselves at book signings or readings as well as videos of themselves reading excerpts from their latest novels. These posts will help get the word out about an author’s work by reaching people who might not otherwise hear about it through traditional channels like television commercials or radio ads (or even print ads).

The internet has been a great tool for helping authors connect with readers. It’s also been a boon for writers looking to market their books. But there are many different social media platforms out there, and not all of them are used the same way. Here’s an overview of how authors are using some of the most popular social media platforms to market their books.

Ever been diligently working on your main project, when out of nowhere, a new idea hits? It’s a great idea. You’re super excited about it. You just know that this new idea is way more interesting to write, way more publishable, just so much better than the lump of words you’re already working with. Then off you go writing that new thing and not finishing your main project.

Don’t worry. It’s happened to me too. In fact, for the first six years that I was a writer, I attempted to write every single new idea that came to mind. It took me nine years to finish a first draft of a novel, because I didn’t have a plan in place when the new idea came along.

Writing without abandon. Who can do such a thing these days? To answer the question, YOU.

Hello Lovelies, and welcome back to the blog. Today I want to talk about the mythical unicorn that is a flow state, how to find yours, and why it will help your writing.

First of all, you might be wondering, what is a Flow State? According to Wikipedia, a flow state is one in which “a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by the complete absorption in what one does, and a resulting transformation in one’s sense of time.”

If you’ve been along to the podcast by now, you’ll probably know that I have a full-time day job that I do in addition to my writing, because I simply can’t afford to stay at home all day. I wish.

When I was first starting out, I would read all these respected authors and their blogs would all say, “Write Every Day.” This has been a mantra that has been repeated so many times that it’s almost a cliche’ by now. I would look at how many pages these authors said they would turn out, how many words per day, and how many sheer books they had under their belts, and think to myself, These authors write for a living. If I want to be an author I need to put in as much time at it as I would if I were making my living from it, or it means I’m not that serious.

I’ve been editing and rewriting my novel lately, and it has been really painful for me. I am a native speaker of American English, and yet, I still struggle mightily when I write and finish an entire book and someone else comes along and tells me my writing needs so much work. I am an underwriter, so most of my struggle comes in the form of telling things that should be shown, and in not describing characters and the setting enough.

In this post, I just wanted to go over some of the things that I have come across during the editing process that I have struggled with or just seemed silly or made me laugh. Maybe you can relate.

Last week, I mentioned that I had made a mistake in my posting schedule and that normally we’d start the final Pillar of Genre this week, however, I had some backtracking to do. As much as I’d love to say that this is a farce, I did not actually skip the post on farce as a literary genre intentionally! So let’s dive in with my apologies for being a normal, mistake making human, and talk about farce this week so that we can get back on track.

Persuasive Nonfiction are nonfiction books in which the author intends to convince readers to believe in an idea or opinion and to do an action. Keep in mind that many writings that aren’t books, such as criticisms, reviews, reaction papers, editorials, proposals, advertisements, and brochures, also use different ways of persuasion to influence readers.

Descriptive Nonfiction, also called Creative Nonfiction, is a type of nonfiction that uses all five senses to help the reader get a visual of what the writer is trying to describe. Sensory details, rich imagery, and figurative language, while also attempting, in good faith, to provide accurate information regarding a real-world topic, are methods used to achieve descriptive nonfiction.

Hello Lovelies, and welcome back to the podcast. Today we are going to talk about the fourth Pillar of Genre, and I am introducing you to the concept of Nonfiction as a Literary Genre.

If the thought of Nonfiction as a literary genre catches you by surprise, I must admit that I was initially surprised as well. I used to think of genre as being solidly in the realm of fictional narrative. However, the more I learned about genre and its conventions, the more it made sense that Nonfiction also has its own definite subgenres with markedly different conventions. You may not be convinced yet, but I hope to change that idea over the course of the next few weeks.

Hello Lovelies, and welcome back to the podcast. It’s the end of week two for NaNoWriMo and probably most authors are starting to feel the burn. As in times before, in week two, I am in the muddy middle of my draft. The writing usually becomes a slog for me, and the burst of energy I feel at the start of something new fades away as burnout becomes an ever more likely scenario.

It is in this kind of place where I am at my lowest as a writer, and for this reason, I wanted to talk about a few free ways you can support and uplift your favorite authors any time of the year, and especially during writing slumps.

Hello Lovelies, and welcome back to the podcast. Today is the last day that we're talking about the second Pillar of Genre. Let’s talk about Poetry.

How do you define what Poetry even is? Would you say that it has a meter or cadence? That it has to rhyme and have multiple verses? That it has to take a specific form? All of those things may be aspects of poetry, and yet poems exist that could also be said to have none of those qualities. Today we are going to go into Lyric Poetry, so let’s talk about it.

Hello Lovelies, and welcome to the blog. Today I want to go over the five biggest genre categories that encompass nearly every book you will ever write. There are a few exceptions, but these main categories are considered the five pillars of genre. So let’s dive in.

At the end of every year, I get organize-crazy. Do I have all my paperwork sorted so I can get my taxes done? How long has it been since I’ve updated my passwords and uploaded all the stuff on my phone and desktop to the cloud? Oh, shoot. I’ve been meaning to get around to finding a spot for that new thing I got in the office and never got around to it. All year. Since last holiday season when I bought it.

There is no shortage of organizing tips for feeling in control of the physical things in your life. If you want a minimal mess desk with functionality and in colors you love, there’s probably a Pinterest board for that. Yet as writers, it is equally important to set up your digital space to inspire. Here are some ways that you can set up your digital life to work for you. I’m going to give you some ideas in an easy, bulleted list to get you started.

Let’s talk about making daily writing goals. I think that everyone tries to make daily writing goals of some sort, but it’s not often that I find somebody who actually keeps them. Starting a new habit is extremely difficult, and keeping that habit is even harder. So today I want to talk about making a realistic daily writing goal that you are able to keep.

First let me explain that most writing goals start off either way too optimistic, or way too pessimistic. Everyone wants to write every day, and that’s fine, but when you start off trying to write too much or too little, it’s a bad deal all around.

The more internet searches I do, the more I realize that there are a whole lot of ways that people work out their task lists. One of the most simple and most effective is the to-do list. Making a to-do list works for a lot of people, because not only can you see everything that needs to get done, but you can also add in extra tasks easily, and you feel super accomplished to mark a bunch of things off your list.

Sometimes, a to-do list can feel totally overwhelming. You have this huge list of everything, but where do you even begin to accomplish them? There is a way to write a to-do list that prioritizes your biggest goals. Call it what you will, but I’ve understood it best as the Rocks-Pebbles-Sand approach.

Hello Lovelies, and welcome back. Every year since 2018 I have picked one word to focus my goals around for the entire year.

In 2018, I chose Focus because I had too many projects and none of them that were completed, so I really wanted to practice focusing in on just one project and seeing it through to completion.

In 2019, I chose Hustle, because while I largely was able to teach myself the focus in the previous year, I was facing multiple rewrites and I wanted to see just how many words I could write in a single year.

In 2020, I chose Perseverance, because the problem with hustle culture is that you can do many amazing things if you're ever in need or in a pinch, but hustling for an extended period of time can and will burn you out. And by the end of 2019, and coming into 2020, I was way burnt out.

This year, the focus word I chose was Energy.

For those of you just tuning in, November is the National Novel Writing Month, and if you were thinking about participating in NaNoWriMo this year, I have some pretty good tips on how to prepare yourself for success.

I have no small amount of knowledge of NaNoWriMo, because for about three years, I participated in every November NaNoWriMo and every Camp NaNoWriMo available. I even became a Municipal Liason. After 10+ sessions, I have won some and I have lost some, so I am very well-rounded in what works and what doesn't.

If you haven't done it before, the challenge is to start a brand new novel on November 1st, and make 50,000 words by the end of November. This is a huge benefit for authors who either cannot stop editing their every word, or have not figured out how to make their writing a daily habit. I have taken a break from doing NaNo in the last few years while I work on my backlog of partially completed manuscripts, but I still love the challenge and the sheer audacity of trying to write over 1600 words per day. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it.

Let me go over three tips that will help you be successful in doing NaNoWriMo this year.

This week, I want to talk specifically about how a self-published author can signpost to their readers that they do more than just writing one type of book series.

We’ve talked a lot about writing a series, and about the pitfalls of how writing an especially long-standing series in a set genre can box you into being a writer of one genre and only one genre, when that may not be what you want to write for the rest of your life. This week, I want to talk about the author/agent relationship, how you can approach your agent about your interest in a broad writing career, and what to do if they aren’t capable or willing to pivot with you once you’re contracted with them.

It’s all the rage. Publishers and readers alike agree. Writing novels in a series is where it’s at. Last week we talked about some of the drawbacks of writing a series from the author’s perspective. This week I want to talk more seriously about what you can do to write a series successfully.

Have you considered that there might be drawbacks? This week, we’re talking all about the drawbacks to writing a series from the author’s perspective.

A while back, I got a standing desk. I made the decision to move from a giant metal teacher-style desk that looked like it was straight out of the 80’s to a desk that is sleek and more my style.

I want to say upfront that this is not an ad of any kind. I am not getting any kind of kickback by telling you about my desk purchase. I did not get any part of the desk discounted or free, I paid for it completely out of pocket because, as you might come to understand, it was more than time for something new.

I do, however, want you to consider carefully whether you want to purchase a standing desk of your own or not, as there were many things, both good and bad, that I’ve experienced with my purchase. I didn’t know what I didn’t know.

Today we are talking all about critique partners. When you’re rewriting your manuscript and figuring out how to make your second draft even better than your first, sometimes it’s not enough to work on your own. As a writer, it’s hard to read your own story with an impartial, critical eye. If you feel you’ve reached a wall with your writing, where you either can’t figure something out on your own, or you think it’s as good as you can make it by yourself, it might be time to consider looking for a critique partner.

I recently went to a statewide writer’s conference. My state puts one on every year, but because of COVID-19, they didn’t have one last year, and this year’s conference was very small and the details were constantly in flux as COVID rules and regulations changed almost daily leading up to the conference.

I hear it all the time. Let your first draft suck. It’s okay to suck at it the first time. It’s supposed to be sucky, just embrace it. Hello Lovelies, and welcome back to the podcast. This year, I want to mainly talk about drafting, and specifically about tips and tricks for getting to a finished first draft. If you already have a finished first draft, the content for this year can still be useful to you in getting a second draft written, so please stay tuned.

We've been talking about revisions and how to get through your draft process. A few weeks ago, I gave you an overview of how to work through a revision in a way that makes sense so that you are not working against yourself the whole time. I gave you a free revision checklist and if you have not picked that up yet go ahead and grab that now. We are going to go in depth this week into the last item on that checklist which is to make as many other passes as you desire.

We’ve been talking about drafting your novels and specifically about getting through multiple drafts of your novel (if that’s your jam). What we’re really talking about is the process of revising your novel. Revising sounded too much like editing for my liking when I first started doing it, and editing just sounds awful and scary when you don’t know what you’re doing. I started calling it writing another draft and that was somehow easier to initially bear than editing or revising. The good news is that there is a way to go about getting your revisions done with minimal backtracking and without having to worry about too many things at each stage. Today, I’m going to tell you about how to do your revisions in a way that makes sense and will lead you to less and less revisions with each pass. You can use this method whether you want to write in one draft or in multiple drafts. You are going to work from big problems to small problems. If you like my method, you can then download a free checklist at the end of the episode. So let’s dive in.

I thought I’d take a break from talking about drafting this week and talk instead about something that fascinates me, which is personality tests. I will make this writing related, since that’s what you’re here for. So we’ll talk about two personality tests I’ve taken and how they both hurt and help me in my writing career.

Brandon Sanderson is a writer who goes through many revisions. He talks about this over several years during his BYU class lectures on YouTube, and I wanted to distill his process down from several videos, which I will link at least one of them in the description for the podcast for anyone who wants to hear him talk about it more in depth. https://youtu.be/nKHLuGyjRi8

That voice inside of you that says that you are an utter failure and that you are and will never be that good? Kick it. It’s lying to you. That defeatist mentality can only set you up for failure and mask some very important truths.

Do you write in multiple sessions in a given day, squeezing in writing time in the in-between moments? Do you dictate on your morning run, feverishly use your phone to access your project when waiting in any line or for any reason, bring your laptop with you when visiting the in-laws, just in case they go to bed early and you can stay up to write? You might be an intermittent writer.

Do you set daily or weekly writing goals, and consistently meet them? If you live and die by the idea that you have to write every day, you might be someone who writes slow and steady. Slow and steady writers will chunk out their work and try to reach a certain word or page count goal every day or every week. This type of novelist keeps a steady pace, pushing forward one step at a time.

Are you a binge writer? There are a lot of bad connotations associated with binging anything. Perhaps you binge watch shows or you binge eat when you're stressed. Did you know you could also binge write?

The hallmarks of a binge writer are people who get a lot of writing done in a small amount of time. If you write between school sessions, on NaNoWriMo, or participate in 10K days, you might be a binge drafter. Binge drafters generally work hard in short bursts.
