Twelve years ago, Kisha Stewart was a 31 year old who recently gave birth trying to enjoy a night out with her husband. She dismissed some symptoms she was experiencing, but as the night progressed, she could not ignore what she was feeling and she went to the Emergency Room. Thanks to the RN who realized she was having a heart attack, she was eventually diagnosed with Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD). She is now an advocate for women who need to use their voice when they know something isn't right and yes, be dramatic to get someone to listen.

To learn more about Kisha's story including important information about heart health in women, go to https://kishaandscad.com/

You may know the typical symptoms of a heart attack but you may not know that women have different symptoms than men do. These may include:

  • shortness of breath
  • nausea or vomiting
  • back or jaw pain.
  • overwhelming sense of anxiety or a feeling of impending doom
  • unusual fatigue
  • dizziness
  • fainting.

Women might have discomfort in the chest, but not always. It’s worth noting that symptoms in women can be subtler and may be overlooked as signs of less serious conditions, like acid reflux or the flu. Thus, both men and women should pay close attention to their bodies and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms that could indicate a heart attack.

Sara Davenport calls herself a multi-passionate entrepreneur who was a burned out TV news anchor who wanted more and she definitely found it. She talks about how her mom-one of the first women news anchors in the 70's-warned her not to get into the industry but of course she did not listen. She talks with Kim about the realities of being a journalist today including taking on more duties for less pay, pitching ideas that may or may not be accepted, trying to write stories on the run, interviewing people, and always being "on" for breaking news to name just a few. This is an important conversation with a courageous woman who is on a quest to change our perceptions about death and how to live. Her book is called You Are Deathless, A near death experience taught me how to fully live and not fear death and Kim highly recommends it for everyone.

You can find Nicole's book anywhere you purchase them or go to her website HERE.

If you spent time over the holidays with your aging family members-parents or grandparents-you may have noticed that they need a little more help with self-care, hygiene, or simply getting around. Women over 40 generally become the caretakers in this situation and they may not know that options are available to help keep our relatives safely at home as long as possible or know when it's time to consider independent or assisted living.

Alicia Harmon talks with Kim about these options, including respite care that can help keep everyone safe and happy as they age in place. She offers ways to start those tough but necessary conversations that most of us don't really want to have.

These are the links to the resources that Alicia mentions during this conversation. Please share with anyone who may need this information.

Janice Baskin is a wife, mom, grandmother and business owner who shares her journey with Kim this week. She left her original career in the not-for-profit world to start working with her husband after realizing they were better when they spent more time together. She shares her lessons learned through her experience with colorectal cancer and the day someone reached out to her when she was feeling very low. That seemingly random connection helped her through some tough days and she encourages all of us to reach out to someone with a "small" gesture like a text or phone call. It could turn out to mean so much to that person.

Listen in as Janice talks about completing the Boston Marathon and starting her blog after a few years of procrastinating and then regretting not getting it going.

Amanda Lathrop has an amazing story of adventure and following her heart. An internship in college involving her "fun" minor of film studies, eventually led her to create her own company that shares stories of families and businesses through video.

Her stories of backpacking through Europe, working for Paisley Park (yes she met Prince), working on television shows like Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Bizarre Foods, and Monster Quest will entertain you as you listen to this episode.

In 2014, she started her own company called Lead Sheep Productions and going back to her psychology roots, she wanted to focus on connecting with the people she interviewed. She specializes in recording conversations for families who want personal histories taken for the future generations. Amanda reminds us that we should not wait until later in life to ask our parents or grandparents about their stories.

She also helps other businesses through her video storytelling to help them connect with their customers through sharing their values and messages in their own words.

Learn more about what Amanda can do for you, your family and your business at her WEBSITE.

Debra Blaine is a doctor from Long Island, New York who is in the process of retiring after a long career but she is also searching for "uncommon sense in a society that is losing its mind...and its heart." She talks with Kim about her career as a doctor and how she enjoyed it but it wasn't really what she truly wanted to do initially. This open and entertaining single mom and MD experienced frustration with the healthcare system that is now run by businesspeople and not doctors. The patients turned into "customers" and the need to keep them happy which caused her to feel betrayed by her own profession.

As she continued on her journey, she realized that she wanted to write about her experiences as a type of therapy for herself which eventually led to writing three books including a murder mystery. Debra talks about how writing these books helped her realize that she didn't want to be in the medical profession anymore and she found a new way to help others. Dr. Susan Landers spent 34 years as a neonatologist while raising children and being a wife to a pediatric nephrologist. She talks with Kim about the challenges of "doing it all" and the depression that set in about a year after her third child was born. Everyone else in her family was adjusting to life in Texas but she was not happy and didn't know what to do until a friend recommended she talk with a psychiatrist. This conversation led her to share about feeling like she was spinning plates and the simple question: "why don't you take down some plates?"

Listen to the whole conversation about how to deal with feeling like we women have to do "all the things" and knowing when to take the time to take care of us. Susan gives us some great tips for how to accomplish this balance in our busy lives.

Susan loves to tell stories that reassure younger mothers to know that they, too, can be a “good enough mother” especially if they work full-time. She supports mothers with her social media posts and her blog. She also cautions physicians and nurses - who might be experiencing serious burnout – about the ways in which it affects their lives and their relationships, and the many ways to treat and recover from burnout. Her new book is “So Many Babies: My Life Balancing a Busy Medical Career and Motherhood.”

Have you ever heard of shadow beliefs? Even if you haven't heard of them, you probably have experienced them.

Nancy Pickard, a life coach and author, transformed her life after her husband decided he didn't want to be married after 26 years. She decided to literally climb Mount Kilimanjaro and set a course for doing it. Along the way she learned (among other things) that she was blaming herself for what others had told her. She learned how to self-reference instead of "others-referencing" her and is so much happier for it.

Kim and Nancy discuss:

  • How not feeling good enough keeps us stuck
  • Shadow beliefs and how and when they are formed
  • How saying what we want isn't enough
  • Knowing we are worthy and valued
  • How uncovering those early beliefs can lead you on a whole new path
  • Making yourself a priority

If you would like to get a free chapter of Nancy's book called Bigger, Better, Braver, click this link: Free Chapter

Merle Saferstein has a wonderful story of feeling lost in midlife and then finding a new path to herself. A chance encounter with a former priest on the beach in Florida led her to working with Holocaust survivors via an Anne Frank exhibit. She calls this work the most important work she has ever done and this created her desire to help others think about the legacy they are living and leaving for others.

Merle R. Saferstein is an educator, speaker, and author. She has been journaling for 48 years and has amassed a collection of 380 journals, the majority of which are the basis for her legacy journal Living and Leaving My Legacy, vol 1. After twenty-six years as a Holocaust educator where she worked with hundreds of Holocaust survivors helping them to leave their legacy, she retired and created Living and Leaving Your Legacy®. Through classes, workshops, and lectures, she has guided thousands of people in sacred legacy work, writing for wellness, and journaling. Her short story collection, Room 732, pays homage to the historic Hollywood Beach Hotel. Merle lives in Miami, Florida with her husband of fifty-five years and has two children and two grandchildren.

Amy Nubson grew up in the midwest as a farmer's daughter and learned at an early age to honor others' needs before her own.

In her own words:

I, myself, am over 40 and it was[n't] until then that I really understood myself and my voice. Over the years I found myself compromising and just getting things done, that I had lost my way and in my 40's I gave myself permission to discover what I wanted. I assist people in finding their stories, their dreams so they can have the courage to be themselves no matter what. Even though I don't just work with women, majority of my clients are women. It my role to guide them to see what they are not seeing.

This conversation with Amy features many examples of Amy taking smaller, courageous steps that led to bigger steps and opportunities. Her three-year journey helped her find her authentic self, take courage in trying things that scared her and becoming a more confident woman. She uses her journey to help others take these steps as well.

Karyn Seitz is a coach and mentor who realized she lacked confidence in her own life and through searching and mentorship, she found the missing piece to change her life. She turned inward to find out that the problem was inside her and she could help herself find what was missing. Karyn's journey started in her 20's; she realized she needed help and sought therapy which she eventually realized didn't give her what she needed.

Her journey included:

  • Turning to healing modalities like shamanism, reiki, Healing Touch and becoming a healer herself trying to do good work for others but neglecting herself
  • Having a 30-something crisis where she was doing all the things and reading all the books to help herself but still feeling lost
  • Meeting her mentors who helped her realize that she was the problem and that this was a good thing
  • Finding the deeper understanding that the answers were within her and the freedom gained from that realization
  • Realizing that her previous spiritual journey was a process of working against herself
  • Knowing that she is responsible for her own choices and how this helped her create a path to happiness
  • How God was giving her "wake-up" signs and intervened to help her find her purpose
  • How she helps others become better versions of themselves through her program called Awakened Grace

Tess Scott is a Canadian Mom, Grami (with a heart over the i) and author, who learned to listen to what God wanted her to do...eventually. Her journey from the black sheep to "Jesus girl" brought her to a place of recognizing that it is ok to move forward even if you are scared.

She talks candidly with Kim about her early life and not fitting in and how she filled the emotional gaps in her life with men, marrying several times, divorces, and how God turned her life around.

Tess speaks with humor about her journey through re-marrying her ex-husband, breast cancer and a mini-stroke while realizing she needed to write a book to inspire other women. Her advice to herself and others will ring true with all who listen.

Tess is an entertaining speaker and author whose book "Listen Sister: Finding Hope in the Freakshow of Life" is awesome!

Sybil Swanson is a lovely and lively woman who decided at the age of 76 to try something totally new to her: painting. Did she take classes or read books to learn? No, she watched YouTube videos for 3 months before she even picked up a brush! Now at age 80, she has explored many different mediums and has landed on oils as her preferred method of creating beautiful artwork.

Sybil has created her own business and offers in-home and group painting parties which are much different than what you may be used to seeing. She does "pour parties" where no brushes are used. Each painting is an individual and you create what you want it to be.

Sybil is a joy to talk to and her art is beautiful and available at area venues including the Maple Grove Arts Center in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Her website is still a work in progress but you can reach her via email to see her paintings or schedule a painting party with her. You can also take a class with her at the Maple Grove Arts Center by clicking the link below.

Sybil wants us all to know that age should not be a factor in achieving your dreams and she is living this out everyday. She is the little engine that could-do not limit yourself, believe in yourself!

Wellness Options Series

Since May is mental health awareness month, we are talking with Dr. Mary Freitag, a clinical psychologist from Stillwater, Minnesota who offers mainstream and integrative therapies in her work. Her message that we need to listen to our bodies to help us heal is so vital to anyone and particularly with women in midlife.

Kim and Dr. Mary talk about the three top issues facing women in midlife:

  1. Sandwich generation issues-raising and launching kids, partner relationships and aging parent needs
  2. Too many roles-the need we have to give 100% in everything we do leading to burnout
  3. Menopause-the physical symptoms leading to depression and messages that it's "the end"

All of these issues are often called "midlife crisis" which is not an actual diagnosis but a life stage that is completely normal and a springboard to a new chapter in life. They also discuss these issues relating to:

  • Aligning our values with our actions by knowing what is most important to us
  • Our midlife transition (not crisis) is based on physiological, emotional and societal changes
  • Each woman reacts differently to midlife and the process of reclaiming who we are
  • Emotional effects from losses experienced in midlife can lead to depression and/or anxiety
  • How we squelch our right brain signs of distress
  • Healing through both left and right brain therapy rather than just one or the other
  • Integrating both types of healing through SpiritWoods
  • Body movement grows and strengthens your brain as well as your body
  • Our wisdom resides in our bodies-we need to listen to our bodies first and figure out the why later

  • You can't serve others if you have never mastered yourself
  • What mindless behaviors are and what they do to us
  • How she has helped others through simulations
  • The lie that we have no choice
  • How her book gives people a starting point for change

Kelly Anderson aka Crayon Kelly has a story that many of us will resonate with. She followed the traditional path of school, marriage and kids and then found herself depleted and realizing she had given everyone else what they needed before herself. She started in the art world in high school and even opened a business with her now ex-husband but found that her art was taking a back seat. Listen as she and Kim discuss her journey towards the realization that she needed to start focusing on herself and unpack all the emotions she had kept stuffed into her emotional "suitcase."

She talks about:

  • Divorcing her husband in 2018 and focusing on her own artwork.
  • Working with crayons as a medium in her art; using the child-like attitude into her art to show that it can be impactful as an adult.
  • "When feeling strong emotions, people tell you to keep it to yourself, don’t be negative or vulnerable. I was sick of hearing that."
  • Unpacking the suitcase of emotions that are stored away.
  • Mindless behavior of putting things away and not sharing or dealing with them.
  • Focusing on herself rather than everyone else.
  • Started her own business, new art projects, thinking about new accomplishments.
  • Defining herself as a creative strategist-"My creativity doesn’t fit in a box."
  • Letting go of what scares you. Everyone is creative in some way. Connecting with others who are different than you.

Antonia Medeiros is a life coach who specializes in helping women create the life that they REALLY want and empower themselves to become who they REALLY are. Antonia started her journey like so many of us by realizing that she wanted more out of her own life. She had a beautiful family and a wonderful career but something was missing; she was feeling lost and unhappy and did not know why. She had "checked all the boxes" but feeling ashamed because she had these negative feelings. She stopped everything and started looking for answers and found a life coach that resonated with her. Flying to the other side of the world and experiencing an intense 4 day journey of self-discovery led her to wanting more for herself and others. She talks with Kim about: Wanting other women to feel that freedom she has found and help them create meaning in their lives. Feeling invisible after age 40. Realizing she was helping to empower women all along in her work as an author and journalist. Women in their 40's and beyond are unstoppable forces that will change the world. We need to step up and set boundaries and still be a good Mom and partner. We are so tuned into what others want us to be and that contributes to loneliness and despair. Once we achieve that feeling of freedom, there's no going back. Antonia is offering an online course called Boundaries Busters to help you say yes to yourself more often by setting boundaries with time, other people and self-care. This course will teach you how to "un-learn" how to say yes to yourself, realize this is not selfish, and give you the energy to care for others too. To learn more about this course please go to this link: https://bit.ly/3hWr3dV

Antonia is offering a very special gift for Midlife with Courage listeners! Those of you who register for this course will receive a FREE 45 minute coaching session to make sure you get the most out of the course and know how to move forward. After registering, just email Antonia and let her know you heard about it on this podcast and she will get your free session scheduled. How often do we take what we read/see/listen to at face value? Probably more often than we should. Sometimes messages are designed to be communicated to us to lead us a certain direction.

This week, Kim talks about how she learned to question pretty much everything.

  • Learning about how advertising leads us to buy and looking deeper to find the true message
  • Sharing a recent example of a social media post offering information, but not all the information
  • Talking about research studies and how many parts there are and how we can navigate them
  • Learning to question everything including our own healthcare-social media is not a reliable resource
  • Questioning is empowering when you find the answers and make your own decisions
  • Kim wants you to do your own research and she can help you get started

Have you ever wanted to write a book?  This week Kim introduces you to Julia Kneeland, a published author and retired elementary school teacher from Connecticut who fosters a love of reading in her own family and others. She talks about bribing-er-rewarding her son years ago for reading books when he informed her that he didn't like reading (GASP!) and how her grandkids inspired her to write and are now helping her with her books about Jig the dog.  She is a sweet lady and a beautiful example of someone who took her love of books and works to inspire young (and not so young) people not just to read but to take chances in life.  The award winning Jig Gets Lost is currently available on Amazon and watch for his next adventure called Jig Goes to the Zoo and who knows where else he will go? Actually, we do know because Julia talks about it in this episode.  Reach out to Julia on her website www.juliakneeland.net to learn more about this lovely lady.

This week, Kim talks about the importance of feeling those sad feelings that seem to come out of nowhere and almost physically knock you down.

We all lose someone or something during our lifetime and there is no "set" timeline for the grieving process to be over. Kim has found it helpful to let the sad feelings come and be acknowledged so that she can continue on with her day. Essential oils are also a great tool to help a person acknowledge those overwhelming feelings. They do not "make you feel better" but they do help you work through what you are feeling.

If you are having trouble coping with the grieving process or any other emotional or mental health issue, please seek professional help. Below are some resources for you.

It has plenty of space for everything I need to do and even has special sections for keeping track of financial goals, books you want to read, birthdays, and daily routines. Check it out at my link HERE. Full disclosure: I do get a small percentage if you purchase through my link and it doesn't cost you extra.

This week I talk about two things: Sharing the burden of not-so-fun things that happen and how finding courage in failure is beneficial in the long run.

I had to make a decision about my horse this year that was not fun but necessary and I share a little bit about that in the first part of this week's episode.

The rest of the podcast is devoted to finding courage in failure and what that means and how it can help you move forward.

We all fail at some point but what we do with that failure will determine how courageous we are.

Are you experiencing or about to experience that time of life where the kids are leaving home? Are you thinking: "What do we do now?"

This episode is for you and anyone who is heading for the "empty nest" transition. Karen Herbert is a wellness coach who specializes in helping women and couples who are trying to find their purpose and meaning as parents, partners and people after the kids strike out on their own.

Karen's journey started about 5 years ago when she was feeling overwhelmed and burdened. She started looking for that "spark" to make changes to release what was holding her back so she could move on to the next season of life. She started working with a life coach who helped her to be intentional and empowered to put herself into the mix of what was happening and let go of that "mom guilt" so many of us experience. She has a wonderful way of explaining how she brought herself "into the mix" of her family life and how much it helped everyone.

Her experiences led her to become a life coach along with her husband and her focus is helping people do the internal work necessary to engage in this transition intentionally. Finding purpose and discovering their gifts and strengths will help empower those in this wonderful time of life. You will be inspired by Karen's story and experiences!

Karen Herbert is a certified professional wellness coach, the founder and CEO of Themelios Coaching, and the creator of the Life In Abundance a 6-month coaching program for midlife women, where she helps women find the purpose they crave as they transition to an empty nest.

I have been tuning in to the Olympics over the last week and wanted to share my thoughts about Simone Biles and her decision to put her own mental health over the expectations of pretty much everyone else. Along with some other thoughts about the courageous beach volleyball team who stood up for themselves despite the threat of being fined.

Our mental health is important and many times, not addressed. Here are some online links to numbers and websites where you can find help:

If I could describe this week's guest in one word it would be "Encourager." From her early college days of sending random encouraging notes to total strangers, to helping discouraged businesswomen find the courage and ideas to move forward, Kendall is a giver.  Listen to her story of finding ways to connect with others authentically by listening to other businesswomen who were brave enough to be real amid all the "should's" and "have-to's." She pays that forward by helping through her website, encouraging emails and social media groups.  Check out her website knormanproofreading.com for inspiration and yes, encouragement. Even if you are not a business owner, you will find something there that gives you a positive vibe.
