On this special episode we interview artist Jane Cheek about seeking new opportunities and keeping the momentum going in the art business.

Jane Cheek grew up in North Carolina and graduated from NC State in 2005 with a degree in Art Studies. She has exhibited her work throughout the Triangle including 311 Gallery, VAE, and Durham Art Guild, and has a public-facing studio at Artspace in downtown Raleigh. Her kinetic rainbow installation, “We Wondered If We Could Reach Its End” is currently on exhibit at VAE’s pop up space at 120 S Wilmington Street and her collaborative installation, “We Made A Happy Little Tree” is on display at Trophy Brewing and Pizza.

Artist Statement:Wind gently whispering over water and land. Light streaming through mist, refracted into a rainbow. Trees standing majestically, accepting of the burdens you lay on their waiting branches. Do you remember being here? Do you remember the feeling of being welcomed in nature? My work captures these emotions in large scale immersive formats. Influenced by abstract and textile art, I stitch collages and kinetic sculptures that bring the viewer into an altered perspective, one where they can feel the wonder and acceptance of the natural world. Nature embraces us all and my work aims to remind the audience of the egalitarian wonder of our planet.

The mindset of creating can be one of the biggest hurdles we as artists need to overcome. From self doubt and the voice of our inner critic, have you ever pushed off creating by using the excuses of I don’t have time, I don’t have enough money, or why waste time if it won’t turn out? What if I can’t replicate my success? Was that one project just a fluke?

If so, you are not alone. In this episode we are going to unpack these very convincing lies and power through the mindset shift that needs to happen in order to create free of expectations! After all, practice makes us better. Focus on the process, not the outcome.
