There's a lot of theories about what food is healthy to eat right now. What's even worse, it seems very likely that it may legitimately be very different for different people. How are we supposed to navigate this mess and be healthy? Join me in the next episode of Catholic Life Coach For Men as my guest Andy Felton explains his theological approach to food and diet. He creates an argument for food from a Biblical perspective. While the Biblical teachings about food and diet are nowhere near as clear as other moral areas, what is present is powerful. You can find Andy's book Nourished By Design on Amazon. Also, I'm announcing my course on Anger. It's a collection of powerful ideas and exercises that will help you regain control of your temper - and protect those you love! You can find it here: St Joseph's Way

While there's always been a wide diversity of ideas, our culture today seems particularly emotionally divided. It's hard to have a calm and constructive conversation with someone who thinks differently than you. What if these differences of though, perspective, and value were actually meant to help bring us together as people. What if they were an essential part of God's plan to find balance in a sinful world? Join me in the next episode of Catholic Life Coach For Men as I explain how political divide, at its core, is present in the Bible. It's a key part of God's salvation plan for mankind. We need to understand what's underneath these differences - and how to value them - to really connect with others who think differently. If we're willing to put in that extra work of curiosity, we can reach people's hearts. Also, I'm announcing my course on Anger. Have you ever noticed that women seem to be more eager to talk than men? Indeed, modern science suggests women on average use at least twice as many words in a day as men. It's one thing to know that - but as a husband, what do I do about it?

Join me in this episode as I present a simple and fun concept about how marriage communication works: the Meadow Report. If you lean into and embrace giving your wife what she needs to feel loved and supported, she's way more likely to support you as well. Furthermore, it's what Christ calls us husband to do.

Parenting is hard. It's exhausting. Though people say the years go by quickly, the days can seem to last forever... Worse yet, we know that we have a heavy responsibility to get it right! And if that wasn't enough, the entire mainstream culture seems to be opposing us as well. Join me in the next episode of Catholic Life Coach For Men as Josh Poteet and I talk about how to be a Christian father and husband. We talk about leadership, service, and humility. We talk about the amazing responsibility that God has given us as fathers, and about how to trust in Him to get the job done. No matter what our origin, we all struggle to follow the will of God. Our pride gets in the way, blocking our ability to both hear and follow His plan.

The little things we do set the stage for our success in every aspect of life. The little habits and routines we do are essential.

Join me in this episode for a great discussion with my guest Jack Landry about what we need to do as Christian men to continually surrender to God. We discuss the various natural tensions that men must lean into in order to thrive. We talk about how we surrender the outcome, repeatedly.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes what your wife says she wants isn't what she actually wants? While this is true for everyone, modern women are in a particular pinch about expressing what they want from a man.

The truth is they simultaneously want a deep and powerful masculine presence from their man but are also scared of that masculinity. This can be a very confusing message to men - especially men who are not confident in their own masculinity.

The solution is for you, the man, to both lean into authentic masculinity, but to do it in a way that remains true to you, and thus "safe." This is hard, and even scary, for us men to do!

Join me in this episode as Joshn Tomeoni and I walk through this idea of authentic masculinity; how do we men find it and live it in a way that serves the women around us the best? Perhaps the most important word is "authentic" - it has to be really you. Nothing fake can endure long term.

I just want what I want when I want it!

Perhaps you've thought or felt that before? I certainly have. It's actually hard work to discern how to balance when I need to care for myself and when I need to tend to the needs of others. There is no one right answer, and it's easy to fall into vice in either direction.

As we go through life, the right balance changes. We have to adapt as our lives change (perhaps another child is born) and as those around us change (perhaps our wife is sick.) How do we balance this?

Join me in this episode as I cover some basics in this balance. I talk about marriage, children, and work. I invite you to be prayerfully attentive to really understand if a passtime is restorative to you or not.

What if you have more control to improve your marriage than you currently think? What if there were real and practical steps you could do that would improve your relationship with your wife in substantially more positive ways.

While marriage is indeed hard, we are not helpless.

Join me in this episode as Dr. Matt Kutz and I break open some practical ways to connect better with your wife and improve how you communicate with her. When men lean into vulnerability, they become more strong, not less. When we lean into our masculinity, we become more attractive.

Lent this year has been quite a bit rougher than what I had planned on. Sometimes, living in the painful valley can be well...painful. The valleys we choose are bad enough. When we get an even tougher valley, it can be downright discouraging.

Ever wonder why Jesus retains the visible wounds after His resurrection? Yes, to a certain extent, they help prove that he was actually crucified (and not some identical twin or something.) His wounds, however, a powerful tool that He uses to build the faith of His followers then, and now.

Join me in this episode as I explore the idea that God can use wounds in a way that might look like incomplete healing, but instead to bring about something way way better than we ever thought was possible. I'll also tell you a bit about two adults and six kids who have a nasty strep infection.

We all bring a sorted and often traumatic past into our marriages. When our various backstories collide, we experience pain.

For those who are not married yet, you have the amazing opportunity to begin healing these wounds before you hurt your spouse. For those who are already married, it's even more urgent to start this work!

The instruction to forgive is a fundamental Christian idea. It's present even in the Our Father prayer. We're told that if we do not forgive, we shall not be forgiven.

But what about if the person who has hurt us the most is...ourself?

Odds are this is probably the case for most people (though some may try to transfer the debt to others.)

Join me in this episode as I discuss how to forgive yourself. This is a critical skill in order to extend forgiveness and charity to others, even those you love the most. You cannot give what you do not have. It's not easy though; as a general rule, the more I have been hurt, the harder it is for me to forgive.

We all struggle with unhealthy attachments to something. For many men, it's alcohol, sex, or pornography. For some it might be gambling, sports, or the appearance of power.

From the beginning, Catholic history has been filled with saints who fervently practiced meditation. This is a powerful form of a prayer that can make a huge impact on how you see and interact with the world. Sadly, most of us have lost touch.

We're just too busy. We've crammed our lives with too much activity. Even our prayers, holy and awesome as they are, are often crammed in and said with haste to "just get it done." It's OK, I find myself living that way too often also.

Join me in this episode as I explore a different type of prayer. Meditation is a prayer that focuses on doing less, or rather doing nothing of my own agenda. I empty myself and invite the Lord in. It's a prayer of surrender - of myself, my agenda, and my need to get so much done!

Especially if you struggle with anger, I suggest you explore Catholic meditation.

The most common instruction in the Bible is "do not be afraid," yet we humans are frequently fearful and worrisome. What's worse is that often we don't even recognize the deeper fears. These are the fears that cause us to pull back from God.

Most men suffer from one of the following three fears:

  • God has some limit.
  • I'm too bad or broken for God to love
  • My choices are too terrible for God to love

Intellectually we may deny it - intellectually we know those aren't true. But deep down that fear can drive us to live our lives in a way that keeps us away from the Lord.

Join me in this episode as I explore these fears and how to confront them. In order to trust the Lord and say "yes" to His will, we need a deeper humility and willingness to surrender. All God requires of us is to align our will to His. Do not worry about the rest.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Even if we men don't speak our comparisons out loud very often, they still destroy our joy and happiness in life. They take a gift of God that is so good, and make us so terribly unhappy about it.

Join me in this episode as I walk through the danger of comparisons and how to steal your joy back. Imagine a kid with a scoop of icecream who just watched another child walk by with three scoops. It takes a lot of work to not lose that joy. But, by the grace of God, you can beat comparisons.

A man who enters the world will encounter problems. This is unavoidable. As soon as one is solved, another rises up. Over time this can be extremely frustrating. It's tempting to just start blaming - other people, events, and even God.

Emotional attacks hurt. They cause wounds that can fester for decades if left alone. Worse, we men are particularly bad at dealing with emotional pain.

It's not a surprise that we do not like the Litany of Humility. It's painful to even think about! Deep down, however, we need it.

Rather than hiding, drinking, or turning to some pleasure, the Christian journey is to endure and accept suffering of all types - even emotional. But how do we do it?

Join me in this episode as I explore the next part of the litany of humility - the invitation to not be afraid of emotionally painful treatment. I walk through why we must be brave enough to endure this pain - and what it costs us if we don't. Even thought it's not easy to see, the Christian call always works out better than the lies of the world.

The most dangerous part of Pride is how often it hides itself behind seemingly well intentioned lies. Being consulted is a good thing. Being preferred because you've worked hard is also a good thing. The desire of these, however, is not.

This does not make sense right away. It's not obvious why this should be so.

Join me in this episode as I discuss the danger of the desires to be consulted and preferred. These do not sound like bad things - and in fact are not. The danger is in the desire, but it's subtle. We intellectually know that the church's teachings are true, but they can be hard to understand!

This is a tough time to be in a corporate environment and be a Catholic.

Join me in this episode as I tackle this difficult question. What are the principles and practical ways we as Catholic men can navigate these treacherous waters? We must hold to truth. We must hold to charity. We cannot compromise on virtue. We must be men of prayer, discernment, and action.

Virtually everyone has heard of the Ten Commandments. Yet, surprisingly, most of us can't actually name all ten.

If we can't even name them - do you really think we're actually keeping them?

Some people might even wonder if they're still relevant in our lives today.

Join me in this episode as Ed Van Buskirk and I talk about the value and necessity of the Ten Commandments in our lives, even today. We discuss why they are a critical part of our struggle towards holiness. God has given us a great gift in the commandments, and we ignore them to our own suffering.

Sometimes it actually is. But we still have to do it anyways.

Join me in this episode as I walk through How to finally Surrender something to the Lord. It's super simple, but also super hard. To help make the point, I also tell 3 stories in my life of where I've had to surrender something, and the pain and agony I've gone through to do it.

Sometimes God asks us for little things. A little adjustment here or there.

Sometimes He asks us to do things that scare the...poop out of us.

How we respond to His call tells us a lot about ourselves. All too often we crumble and falter. But we don't have to!

Join me in this episode as Kevin Phillip shares his story of God's call to ministry through his life. Sometimes it was easy, and sometimes it was very hard. God often calls us into the place we least want to go - the place we are most afraid of. How we respond to that call sets the course of our lives!

Every human has a great number of pieces, parts, and facets to themself. Finding balance is often difficult - commonly one piece (perhaps a lustful piece) takes over control and we seem "surprised" with where we end up.

Things get really bad when we confuse a "piece" of ourself for the actual "self."

Who is the real "I" that lives beneath all our desires, whims, and needs?

Join me in this episode as I start with Exodus chapter 32 (the original "Pride Parade") and explore what commonly happens whenever we confuse a piece of ourselves with the actual self. The response is for the Levites to draw swords and kill - and that is often the response we need also towards those lustful, gluttonous and sinful parts.

Mild action doesn't cut it. We need to be radical.

So often in our lives, God is moving pieces that we don't see, or at least understand. We commonly are so focused on the moment we fail to see the bigger picture.

Commonly we fear that things are so bad there is no way even God could bring good out.

But there are also those blessed moments where God lets us really see back in time - see the beauty of His design, the power of His creativity. In those moments we are offered a renewed hope.

Join me in this episode as Scott Maderer shares his story. It is a powerful story of a patient God who lets Scott try it his own way. When that fails, God gently, patiently, and inexorably leads Scott back to the faith.

One of the most common questions I get is what are the actual differences between Coaching and Therapy. While there are some common challenges between them, there are also some significant differences.

Coaching, much like in a gym, is much more of a push to do your best. Therapy, at it's finest, is a gentle nurturing restoration of traumatic damage. There's a time and a place for each, but there's definitely a modern trend to turn to therapy too quickly for too many things.

There is no doubt that sexuality is a very hot and politically charged topic right now - both in the church and the culture in general. I have no doubt that some who listen to this episode will find something (or perhaps many things) I say offensive.

Nevertheless I have worked with too many Catholics who are struggling with SSA and too many Catholics who are not, but are unsure what to think or say about this issue.

Join me in this episode for a direct, open, and honest discussion about sexuality, sin, and the Catholic church. I approach this issue with charity for individuals - all individuals. While the teachings of the church are true and do not change, that does not justify the attack of character and judgement of personhood that we see rampant today. Christ treated all who earnestly sought holiness with tenderness and mercy - especially when they failed. We are called to no less.

I really would invite feedback from this episode. I suspect it will be a sensitive and emotional subject. We all need to take action to ensure both the preservation of truth along side the protection of individual dignity and personhood.

Christ commissioned his disciples to spread the Good News to everyone throughout the world. While this has always been challenging, it is even harder in our "post-Christian" world.

It's very clear that arguments are rarely effective.

Join me in this episode as Fred Vilbig shares his story and how he shares his faith with everyone - including his fallen-away children. This is a challenge that many Catholic parents are struggling with, uncertain how to reach them.

As a father of 11 children, several of which have fallen away from the faith, he has ample practice. He shares his wisdom about how gentle questions and open engagement can reach the heart far better.

Fred has written a book specifically about his experience reaching these souls. You can get a copy of the book and learn more about Fred at his website https://catholicgathering.com/

Deep down, we all (even non-Christians) know that there has to be some part of us beyond our brains and bodies. Those deepest parts have yearnings that call us to search for something that is not material.

Those yearnings call us to search for God. Though, we do get confused sometimes.

Join me in this episode as Cory Rosenke shares how his yearnings (and and irrepressible urge to ask "Why?") lead him to his faith and to God. We talk about how the deepest issues of identity, purpose, mission, and meaning lead us to God in a powerful way. Without their proper alignment, we are easily lost.

We live in an age that emphasizes systems, order, processes, logic, and efficiency as a primary purpose of our work. In many ways, these indeed have brought tremendous comfort, safety, and convenience to our lives.

But what if we've lost something also? What if this overemphasis on systems has cost us the meaning, purpose, and connection that makes human life ultimately worth living?

Join me in this episode as I'm joined by a rather unusual guest. Many of you know that I'm an engineering type of mindset - Mr. Michaell Magrutsche is on almost the opposite end of the temperament. He shares his story about how his inability to complete basic elementary school lead to his artistic success.

Michaell also shares his discoveries about connection, and how choosing people, beauty, and a curious perspective can bring fulfillment and meaning.

You can read more about Michaell's work at his website: https://michaellm.com/self-aware-art-education or follow him at https://anchor.fm/michaellart

Michaell is not Catholic, and we discuss the importance of beauty, and how his work compares with the teachings of the Catholic faith.

The Second Greatest Commandment is to "Love Your Neighbor As Yourself." Sounds simple enough, right?

Maybe not.

First, what does it mean to love "yourself?" Most of us, if we spoke the truth, actually think very poorly of ourselves. We treat ourselves horribly, stealing from our own futures. We are unkind and speak to ourselves with anger.

Then we proceed to "love" our neighbor in the same way.

Join me in this episode as I talk about what we can do to better understand how to live this commandment out. It is not easy. Love is not some fairy-tale concept, but a series of actions, choices, and even a worldview that we go through.

You are called to love many neighbors. Start by learning how to love yourself.

There's a lot of reasons when It is sometimes off the table. But almost all of them make it harder to be a good husband.

What's worse, for a couple practicing NFP in order to avoid conception, the time when It is off the table is also the time when both parties want It the most!

This is not easy.

Join me in this episode as I talk about some practical ways to look at Phase 2 of NFP, as well as some rules for how to navigate Phase 2. This is not a universally agreed upon topic, and I attempt to treat this with gentleness and respect. This is certainly not something that anyone ever figures out completely.

Please be advised that this topic does discuss human sexuality, and while in a respectful and medical tone, it would be worth considering what audiences should listen to this. Please protect your children! I have marked the content as "explicit" not because there is any swearing, but to make sure it does not accidentally bypass any filter settings.

Perhaps you've heard about Gary Chapman's idea that we communicate love as a particular "language." Perhaps you've even done a little bit of work and learned you and your wife's Love Language.

But how do you really use the love languages to help your wife feel loved?

Join me in this episode as I bring in a Love Language expert (not to be confused with the Love Experts from the Frozen movie series.) Mr Paul Zolman shares his practical ways to really lean into the love language concept - both to become better at using them yourself, as well as to really help your significant others out.

When God kicked Adam out of the garden, He assigned Adam to work. This work wasn't meant to be merely a "punishment" but rather a path to redemption. Work is a chance for a man to strive, grow, and become the deeper man that God intended him to be!

So many of us look at our jobs as simply a way to pay the bills. We tend to either rush to get the bare minimum done or instead become obsessed with work to the detriment of our families.

This was never God's plan.

You have an opportunity to join a free conference to learn what to do instead!

Join me in this episode as my returning guest Dan Donaldson discusses the next free conference hosted by Catholic Men’s Leadership Alliance (CMLA). This conference is called the "Gospel of Work" and focuses on how we as Catholic men need to show up and lead at work.

Did I mention Matthew Kelly (one of my personal favorites!) will be speaking???

It's hard to stay in shape. This is obviously true because we all see the statistics of how out of shape our country is. I know that I struggle to limit how much I eat - God is just so good and has provided so much wonderful food!

But what if it was easier to get and stay in shape?

Join me in this episode as my guest Roman Fischer explains how he got strong and fit, as well as how he helps his guest. As with so much else, the first step is always in our mind. Our thoughts and mindset are critical; nothing works without them!

There's a tension between gender differences when it comes to the workplace. It's impossible to successfully deny that the differences are real (though many do try), but we're supposed to act is if everyone is the same.

How do we do that?

Join me in this episode as I explore this issue (translation: ramble and postulate.) This is not an easy issue, but may not be as difficult as some think. We are all different in many many ways. The difference of gender, while profound and significant, is only but one of many ways. The Christian calling is to honor and respect others, even (perhaps especially) those who are different.

Be authentic. Be genuine. Be bold and powerful.

Be a real Christian man - in every setting

Although we regularly listen to the Bible verses calling men to leadership, most of us men don't really know what that means. Furthermore, our culture is shoving the idea of "toxic masculinity" down our throat every chance it gets.

Maybe the society (and the ruler behind it) is right to be afraid of masculine leadership.

Maybe, when God gave men the job of leading, He also equipped us differently from women?

Join me in this episode as I explore not only why "toxic masculinity" is so powerfully pushed, but also what men are called to do in response. The truth is that God did specifically challenge men to lead, and to lead in a powerful way. How we respond to this challenge is definitely one topic that we'll have to answer to Jesus directly on the day of our judgement.

If you found this episode helpful, please share this podcast with another man. We have to team up or the world will tear us apart.

If you're at all like me, it's easy to get mad when your wife accuses you (unjustly!) of something. It's easy to quickly see why it isn't true, fair, or even appropriate for her to have said that horrible thing! It's even easier to respond by pointing out just how horrible of a thing it was to say!

But this isn't the Christian way.

Husbands, you are called to love your wives. unconditionally. This means you have to love her even when she is being unfair or unjust. (Hint: you are also commonly unfair and unjust!)

But how do we do that?

Join me in this episode as I talk about one major way to love your wife - love her through her accusations. This is hard. This is also essential. Putting those two together means you might need some help. I offer you two particular tools in this episode that will transform your marriage conversations if used properly.

Your wife needs your unconditional love, not your corrections.

It's hot! (At least in the northern hemisphere.)

If you're at all like me, it's harder to stay calm when my face feels like it's melting off. Everything the wife or kids say or do seems to cut more sharply.

If you still blame your family for when you get overheated on the inside, it might be time to take a closer look in there. Our emotions are ultimately coming from our choices. We can choose how we frame everything that others say and do.

Join me in this episode as I open up some of the main ways we men lose our cool with our wives, and what to do instead. Additionally, I cover a bit of how to stay cool with the kids too. Turns out they are both related and need similar skills!

Men need men. Our wives are not men. We need more than our wives.

Sounds obvious, right?

Yet so many men do not make the time to form deep friendships with a group of faithful men committed to improving themselves. We find ourselves "busy" and prioritize everything else - to our (and our family's!) loss.

Join me in this episode as I explore not only why having a group of men that you can really count on is so critical, but I share some practical advice for how to do it. I'm not claiming it's easy, but I am claiming that it is essential!

At least, if you want to show up and really take care of your wife and family in the way that they need!

This episode is Part 2 of episode 143. I strongly recommend you listen to that episode first!

There are many in our society who desperately want us all to believe that gender is merely an adjustable value. Even within the Catholic church, there are many who fail to embrace just how stunningly different men are from women.

Women are different from men! And not merely in plumbing, but in deep and powerful ways. In various ways from how we use words, evaluate actions, and look at the world.

When we try to evaluate our wives using the lens of a man or when we try to evaluate a husband using the lens of a woman things get ugly. Yet we do it all the time!

Join me in the this episode as I continue explaining some really critical differences between the genders and how they relate to our God-given duties in marriage. I'm going to be direct and blunt. I'm going to speak using language intended for a man to understand. This means, ladies, you may not understand what I mean correctly. :)

This episode continues the wisdom that I wish I would have had available in my marriage many years ago.

God has a plan for every single one of us - but we often don't do a great job discerning it. It can often take struggle, effort, and even failure to find that path.

While it's not universal, it is very common for a husband to want to have physical connection to his wife - and a strong one. But a lot of us go through periods where that connection is less strong. Often we just "soldier on" and hope it gets better.

Often times, we try to ask our wife what she wants to feel better connected - only to become discouraged when what she suggested doesn't actually work.

Sometimes a guy will just accept that this is his "cross" to carry and (grudgingly) "accept" it.

After all, isn't abstinence kind of like fasting? That's good, right?

Join me in this episode as I break open why it's so important for husbands to be constantly engaged in improving themselves for the sake of their marriage. Physical intimacy can often be an indicator of where the husband has stopped working on himself. While there are genuine times we are called by the Lord to periods of abstinence, that's no reason to accept it when it's not necessary and give up.

We must always be working on ourselves, to become our best version. Connection - all connection - matters in marriage.

View Details

One of the most common desires of married men is for more physical intimacy with their wives. There are countless "solutions" offered, often by the wives themselves, that don't really seem to deliver.

It's easy for a husband to find this frustrating, maybe even infuriating; why can't we just solve this and both be happy?

What if female attraction actually does exist, but doesn't work at all like male attraction?

Join me in this episode as I discuss the nature of female sexual attraction from a scientific perspective. What will actually activate our wives' attraction? My claim is even if they don't know, we can put a few pieces together.

I walk through the biology of what females are biologically programmed to look for, compared to what men are programmed to look for.

This episode is likely the first of several exploring the question of how men can improve themselves in order to improve their physical connection with their wives.

God has a unique plan for every person - but so often we get in the way.

Everyone has stories we tell ourselves that get in the way of God's plan, but men tend to bury our stories more deeply and are less likely to share them than our feminine counterparts.

Weight loss isn't usually as hot a topic for guys as it is for girls. We tend not to be as worried about our physical appearance, and we all too often focus on other deliverables in our life.

But what if there's more to health and fitness than the number that comes from the bathroom scale?

Join me in this episode as Brady Ross walks me through his weight loss story and what role weight played in his life. He talks about some practical ways that he lost weight and he helps other men lose weight. The most important part is your mindset, and Brady gives us some awesome perspective!

I really enjoyed my previous conversation with Alex and decided to invite him back. We decided to do something different for this episode.

Rather than an organized and official topic, we just wanted to share what we're both working on in our own lives for this season of Lent. This episode is entirely 100% unplanned, unscripted, and raw. I think you'll enjoy it.

My hope is that you'll go out and have a similar conversation with your friends - share what matters to you!

Jonah was swallowed by a whale when he went astray of God's plan but that isn't the only option. Many people today get stuck in something that feels very comfortable while avoiding God.

Often following God's call requires giving up something that seems good and comfortable, but God only asks us to go forward to find something better yet!

In this episode, I'm joined by Alex Pauls who shares his story of how God has guided his life. God's plan for Alex challenged his limiting beliefs and false identity statements. Although it was difficult, looking backwards so often shows us how God's plan was exactly what we needed!

I've always been jealous (in a good way!) of the passion and authentic joy the people seem to commonly have in Africa.

They move about with a purpose to their lives and a deep smile on their face. When I look in the mirror, I don't always see such a compelling smile on my own face.

Join me in this episode as my Nigerian guest Tobi shares his story. You will love how his passion and joy for life (and self improvement) spread into every part of his life. There's a lot of practical ways you also can find more passion and enthusiasm for your life!

This episode is special. We live in some crazy times right now where it's often hard to see God's goodness. A lot of people are struggling with doubt, pessimism, and discouragement.

My client Anthony bravely volunteered to share a piece of an actual coaching session that we just finished where he was dealing with this same type of issue.

I want to encourage you to listen in, I think the conversation was very powerful and applicable to us all!

Knowledge of the death of a loved one is really hard. We often don't give ourselves the needed space to process those emotions.

In this mini episode I talk about a quote from St. Alphonsus Liguori, talking about how ignorance of the future is a great blessing that God gives us. I also talk about how to mourn an upcoming loss even before it has come.

If you are struggling with death or upcoming death in the family, I strongly encourage this episode!

This episode continues the discussion from Part 1 - make sure you've listened to that first!

If you believe you have a bad identity belief (and we all do!) then the natural question is, "how do I change it?" That's the question I'm going to tackle in this episode.

There are several steps to changing what we believe we are. While we can start by ourselves, ultimately we always want to bring God into that process.

Join me in this episode as I give several concrete steps to change your beliefs about who, what, and whose you are. This is an incredibly powerful tool that will help you conquer whatever actions in your life you don't like.

One of the most common problems I find in my coaching clients that is hiding underneath troubling behaviors is a bad "identity" statement.

Most of us confuse previous actions with who we are - our identity. This is toxic.

When a man believes that he is "broken," "not enough," or "bad" his ability to behave well is severely limited.

Join me in this episode as I break down why our identity is so critical to our lives and our ability to make progress. This is the most common issue I find with guys who are unable to give up some problematic behavior. If you seem to be unable to change something, there very well may be a bad identity statement at the core.

It's surprisingly easy to define ourselves by what we do. Most of us do! Not only is this not healthy, it sets us up for some major confusion when our job changes.

This may at first seem trivial, but I've worked with many clients who have what is called an "identity wound." Common ones include "I'm broken," "I'm not enough," and "I'm not really a man."

Often, we cling to our job as a replacement for this deeper identity problem. This doesn't work.

Join me in this episode as Dr. Keagen Hadley explores his own broken identity. It doesn't seem like a torn ACL would be an event needing psychological intervention, but when it destroyed his ability to be who he thought he was, things became dark. In the last episode, you heard Bob talk about how Pure Desire helped him break free from pornography. In this episode, we go to the source; Nick describes his work at Pure Desire.

Like so many other guys out there (including me!), he was exposed to pornography at a young age, and became hopelessly addicted...

...but didn't want to see it that way.

It was just a problem that came up in some "new" way every so often, that he was for sure going to beat, that never really went away.

Even when a perfect opportunity was handed to him to try something new, he knew that it would be a great opportunity for those other guys who were actually addicted!

Thankfully his wife nudged his ribs and persuaded him to do it. His life was transformed forever. Yours can be too!

Join me in this episode as Nick and I discuss his story, and how Pure Desire finally cracked open his addiction enough to allow the healing love of Jesus to restore him. He shares his struggles starting from childhood and into marriage; escape seemed impossible! Yet, with a new and deeper approach, he found his freedom.

Bob eventually lost hope that there was anything he could ever do to escape from this addiction. He even believed that God Himself couldn't set him free.

Until the day he finally decided to step out of the "boat" of his self reliance, and finally surrender to God.

I invite you to join Bob and I in this episode as Bob shares his incredible story of how God stepped into his hopeless addiction to pornography, and finally set him free forever. This is an incredibly emotional journey through hopelessness and pain.

Ever notice how every guy is super eager to talk about what he does for work - but not to go that one step deeper and share how his virtues bring success in that job?

The irony is that it's actually way more helpful (and important) to share why we are successful with our brothers than what it is we're good at.

Underneath that success there are always virtues. Many businessmen think of virtues like perseverance, diligence, attentiveness, or energy. My claim though is that actually those aren't the real ones.

Join me in this episode as I discuss how the "eulogy" virtues of humility, loyalty joy, and integrity are actually the important virtues for your business success right now!

Life is complex. We hear a lot of messages that we don't really know how to interpret. So much gets tangled up in our minds - how does it all fit together?

What if love could be looked at, rather than a sweet and light feeling, but instead as a choice. Specifically, a choice that helps us grow, mature, and become a more Godly person?

Episode 100, yay!

It's been almost 2 years since I started this podcast, and it's been quite the adventure. At the same time, I've been helping countless men to forever change their lives for the better.

What's surprising is how many failings in common we all have.

We all fall to the same sins. We tend to then lose sight of ourselves in the process and drown in shame.

But there is hope!

In this episode I explore the six most common problems I've encountered in my time coaching, and what to do about them. It's extremely likely at least one of these will affect you.

Let me know what you think, I'm always looking for more feedback

Masculinity is under attack right now. We rarely even use that word without the word "toxic." Our boys are left struggling trying to decide what it means to be a man, and if they qualify.

Rarely do our young men make good choices when struggling to understand what it means to be man. Instead of virtue, they pursue women, risk, or pleasure.

But what if you, as the father, can do something about that?

Scandal is applied to the Catholic Church all too often. Those of us faithful in the pews can easily become discouraged and lose hope in the quality of our leadership.

As a result, we faithful laity often feel powerless. But what if that's not true?

Some of us grew up camping - and some did not. Especially if you have younger children, it can seem more than a bit daunting to venture out into bug-infested wastelands that can both freeze and burn you on the same day!

This episode is something new. Steve Vando joins me and we flip the tables! He interviews me about my experience taking kids camping (along with all the guest-heckling that a host is supposed to do.)

We discuss a lot of practical tips as well as share some good stories.

If you have thought that maybe you should try the outdoors with children, then this episode is a Must-Listen!

In the beginning, The Father spoke the Word to create the world. Adam then Named all the animals.

Ever wonder why the secular studies show that it's up to Dad to make sure the kids stay in the faith?

There is something profound about how men can Name, and it means something?

In this episode we explore this God-given gift to men, within the headship of the marriage - and what responsibility that creates for each man.

We live in a crazy world right now where there's a lot of darkness. Between pandemic, election drama, riots, etc. there's good reason to be skeptical and negative.

But it doesn't help you to be so!

Join me in this episode to discuss how embracing a spirit of gratitude can transform your life even in the most difficult of moments. It can give meaning and lead to courage and love.

The alternative is to simply agree with the devil, that everything is bad. Who wants to be on his team though?

Adam, dude....

Ever since the apple fell, guys have been workin' hard. But what does it mean to work? Why is it important, and how do we find the job that is right for us?

In this episode I offer some philosophical and some practical advice for how to determine the right job for you; a job that offers both money and meaning.

"What's your story?"

It's undeniable - we live in a scientific mindset world. And it works...right? Well, for some things yes. If you need to get a rocket to the moon, absolutely. If you need to understand why love is fickle and sometimes hurts...not so much.

In this episode we explore the other half of reality, that of the story, or the narrative events. It's not about measurements in feet, pounds, or degrees, but is instead about what has real meaning in our lives.

Join me to find out more.

I just got back from one of my favorite camping trips of the year.

11 dads.

Almost 40 kids.

Hot sun. Cold nights. Mosquitos. Lakes. Shooting. Eating. Drinking.

But, in case you missed out, I've distilled 5 powerful lessons I learned from this trip. Can't wait to share.

We all have a viewpoint of the world that is different from each other, but there are patterns. Some people look at the world with the belief that there is so much more goodness out there to be discovered, while some people worry that there simply isn't enough. The former is an attitude of Abundance, while the latter is an attitude of Scarcity.

In this episode I open up this subject from a Biblical view. Consistently in the Bible, God invites us to believe in His goodness, and the superabundance of His goodness. But how do we actually do this?

The first step to solving any problem is to be aware of the problem. Or, said differently, one cannot confess a sin without knowing that one has sinned. Awareness is a critical part of any growth process.

Awareness isn't simple, however. There are many different ways to be aware - and specifically, different steps in the mental process for awareness to act. As we become aware earlier in the process, we slowly get closer to sainthood. In this episode, I invite you to become more aware of how aware you are.

Control.

Self-reliance. (Ungodly, of course)

We all want to control. We all like to trick ourselves into thinking that we actually DO have control.

In this episode I really explore what it means to have control, why we want it, and how we use control to further our own perceived need to be self reliant. If you really want to live the life you TRULY want, then instead of gripping more tightly, the only solution is to surrender our will to God. In surrender lies true freedom.

Probably the most consistent question I get asked in a phone call is "How is Life Coaching different from Therapy?" It may seem like they are similar - but actually have some pretty significant differences in approach. It all has to do with Trauma.

In this episode I discuss what trauma is and how it works. The bigger question most people want to ask - what can you do about it?? We all have trauma (at least all of us whose parents were human.) The extent of the trauma determines what we do next.

Very few guys I've met like to talk about their feelings. So much so that a common joke about what guys least want to do is "sit and talk about our feelings." Yet, we do need to talk about them. Furthermore, we need to dig deeper to really find them - then take the even bigger risk and share them with those whom we love.

In this episode I really go deeper on the idea of how feelings play a role in our lives. This is often one of the biggest resistance points I have with new clients who really really want to claim they do not have feelings. In this episode, you'll learn not only why it's helpful to dig and share your feelings, but how to do it too!

This was a tough topic for me. When I first learned about my own disordered love style I was really resistant to what I was reading. I didn't see - for quite some time - that what I was doing was wrong. I certainly didn't see how it was hurtful to my wife.

We all fail at the commandment to love. God created us from love, and for love. Yet, instead of living out a true covenant-style love of complete and total mutual gift of selves, we close the doors to one piece or another. This created pain in our relationships - especially in our marriages.

I really invite you to come along with me on this episode.

Relationships are hard - especially as guys. It often seems that women have a bit of an advantage at understanding, empathizing, and ultimately connecting with others. Yet, despite our frequent claims otherwise, relationships are just as important to guys.

This episode focuses on how to live the Lord's second greatest commandment. Love thy neighbor as thyself. If you pause and think, it almost sounds impossible. How can I love someone who has done terrible terrible things? We'll get to that.

Also, in this episode, I introduce a lot of concepts and terms that will change how you think about your relationships, and change how you show up for others.

This episode is a tough one to hear. We all have limitations - things we want to be a certain way, but they are not. Many of these limitations cause us real problems and real pain. Rarely do we fully understand why God has allowed them to be.

Yet, in these limitations, we often find our deepest meaning and purpose. We find the little things that change our lives and help us to become better and more virtuous Christians. We find that God actually does know what He's doing!

Books often start with a prologue - but if you're at all like me, you don't always read them. Yet, they have the power to set the stage for the rest of the story. Similarly in life: rarely do we fully understand how important our thoughts are to what happens in our lives. The Bible does though! Not only does it understand how important the prologue is, it even gives us some really good ones to use.

In this episode we explore examples of how a prologue can radically change your understanding of a story. We connect that to our own thought processes, and how we can change what a story means and how we respond simply by changing what we think about it. We also discuss the devil's goal to tell his own prologue, and how to overcome that effort.

Lent is nearly over, and we're just starting Holy Week (at the time of recording at least.) In so many ways God asks us to stay with Him, and stay faithful to Him, and most of all to repent and return to Him every time we stumble.

In this episode we explore how we can be the hero, we can receive God's blessing, only when we are faithful and obedient. But, how do we actually do that? In the crazy world we live in, it's so easy to be consumed by the world. Let's turn back to God.

In this episode we continue looking at how God's plan for us humans actually does NOT include our right to righteous anger - or any anger at all for that matter! Sound crazy? So did Jesus!

Living a life free from anger feels about as impossible as living a life free from lust. Yet, not only does God invite us to this holiness, He has given us the power, through His grace, to be able to do exactly that.

I encourage you to listen to this episode. If you, like me, suffer from anger, perhaps it's time to start to change!

I didn't think I was an angry guy when growing up. Then I got married and had kids, and started to discover just how much I really do struggle with anger. Though I made some good progress in dealing with it, I always thought if anger as somehow a "sometimes OK" kind of thing.

The book Unoffendable, written by Brant Hansen, has deeply challenged this view.

What if indulging in Anger, like Lust (e.g. Pornography), isn't the sort of thing that is "sometimes OK?" What if, instead, Christ calls us to live a life based on radical forgiveness, the forgiveness that can only come through His grace? If you want to live a better life, free from anger, this book can help.

In this first episode of several, I start to explore Brant's view anger.

Nobody likes fasting, yet our Lord specifically instructs us to fast. He even promises power, the power to drive out some demons that prayer alone isn't enough for. I bet most of us have some of those demons in our lives.

In this episode, in preparation for Lent, I open up the old idea of Fasting. Why? How? Actually...still stuck on "Why??" Fasting means eating less food, feeling hungry, and creates a space for the Holy Spirit to move in our lives. I encourage you all to fast this Lent.

"Busy" has become almost a safe-word now for a lot of us. When asked "How have you been?" most people now answer with "Busy!!" Yet, what does BUSY really mean? Is it helping us become better men? Is it helping us grow in holiness?

In this episode, we explore the concept of Busyness. We tie in the Pareto Principle, as well as Price's Law, to demonstrated how most of the things we are "busy" with actually aren't helping us. Like Martha complaining to Jesus about Mary, we have got to see the bigger picture. If we don't, we're in danger of making our checklist more important than our most important relationships!

Most Catholic guys have at least heard of Exodus 90, and usually let out a really deep sigh at even the thought of the program. And let's be honest - it's not easy! Sometimes though, the things that are most important take the most effort.

Exodus 90 is not about suffering. It's about freedom. It's about fraternity. It's about using the support of your Christian brothers to open up your life for God's grace to work in! It's tough work!

In this episode I bring in a very special guest, Mr. Bob Hover. Bob will share his story and his adventure going through Exodus 90, as well as other powerful fraternal experiences. Bob, like many of us, has had his challenges; he shares with us how it all changed.

I remember when I first encountered the concept of a Quiet TimeOut instruction from Dr. Ray Guarendi. I thought it was crazy. I thought it would never work with my kids. I was worried it would look like weakness. I was so wrong.

How we control ourselves when interacting with our children is critical not only to their development, but to ours as well. Parenting is HARD, but that's not an excuse for us to just toss in the towel. Our job is to get these kids to Heaven, nothing less!

In this episode I introduce a really neat tool that revolutionized how I discipline myself. It will teach you more about yourself than the kids, and you will be more confident and capable if you can master it. The concept goes so far beyond a TimeOut!

Ugh, Self-Discipline isn't a fun topic! Nevertheless, it's so critical to our primary mission: Be A Saint!! If we cannot discipline ourselves, we cannot do what Our Lord asks of us. Even if we know it's important, however, it can easily seem overwhelming.

In this episode I lay out a model for how to improve our self-discipline in small and steady steps, with multiple types of accountability. This work is not going to be fun, but it will transform your life!

Simply put, pornography may be one of the single biggest crisis our culture is facing. It is destroying our marriages, families, self-identity, and even our own brain chemistry. Statistically, almost all men have struggled or still do struggle with the compulsion for pornography.

Ever since I watched Nelson hit Bart with his own hand, I knew I was doing something like that myself. It wasn't until I discovered the power of our own thoughts that I came to realize how.

The ancients tell us that our thoughts determine our reality - but what does this mean? In a scientific age, what can this mean? Well, surprisingly, it may be more close to true than we might like.

In this episode I start the exploration of how our thoughts affect every aspect of our understanding. They literally create our results. If you want to stop punching yourself, gain control of your thoughts!

View Details

In this episode I dive into what men should expect to feel, and why we feel them. These are both super important, because we have some really bad ideas about both.

Men should want to feel feelings in the same way that Jesus did. He not only feels them all, but he intentionally makes space for them.

It gets even more interesting when we explore why we get them. While there are several types and moments of feelings that are inspired by external events, most of our feelings are heavily dependent on how and what we think.

We all want to be Men of God, yet it's so hard to know what that even looks like sometimes. I know that I screw up a lot and tend to hide behind worldly comforts. What would it even mean to stand tall before God?
